The 11 Best Restaurants In Jack London Square

"The first thing you’ll notice about this dive bar is that the floor is on a slant—not because you’ve had one too many pints, but thanks to the force of the legendary 1906 quake. This dark drinking den very much feels like a time capsule—there are black-and-white photos, newspaper clippings, and dust-covered knick-knacks all over the walls, plus beer, classic cocktails, and chill energy to match. If hanging out in a place that feels like an eclectic cave isn’t your thing, drink on the huge front patio overlooking some boats and Jack London’s main path. " - julia chen 1, lani conway, ricky rodriguez

Heinold’s First And Last Chance Saloon Review - Oakland - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"The first thing you’ll notice about this dive bar is that the floor is on a slant—thank the force of the legendary 1906 quake for its peculiar physical state. The Best Restaurants and Bars Around Oakland’s Jack London Square | Eater SF

"Oakland’s oldest bar, Heinold’s was built in 1883 and has remained a historic landmark in Jack London Square. The tiny, single-story shack is made of remnants of an old whaling ship, and the flooring remains steeply slanted after the 1906 earthquake. Most of the seating is outside, surrounded by palm trees." - Dianne de Guzman

23 Dive Bars, Saloons, and Taverns Where the Vibe Is Unbeatable

"Opened way back in 1883, this dive bar was cool before any of us knew what cool could be. It was so cool that Jack London would often hang out here. (The proprietors of the place say that London wrote his notes for what would eventually become Call of the Wild while drinking at the bar—it’s also mentioned several times by name in his novels John Barleycorn and The Tales of the Fish Patrol.) Originally built from the remains of a whaling vessel, Heinold’s First and Last Chance Saloon is a shack situated on the corner of Jack London Square in Oakland, California. It has been in continuous operation since 1883. And, frankly, it looks like it. But that’s part of the appeal—hey, they don’t have Jack London anymore to draw in visitors. This is one of the diviest of dive bars. The most distinctive feature of Heinold’s First and Last Chance is the floors that are not level – by several feet. During the 1906 earthquake the pilings under the building settled and threw off the floors to by several degrees, and stopped the clock in the corner, still set to 5:18. Nobody has bothered to fix this issue in the last 100-plus years. For that, you’d probably have to shut down for a couple of days, and Heinold’s just doesn’t do that. Another distinctive feature of Heinold’s is the signed dollar bills that cover some of the walls. Sailors and soldiers would sign their money and put it on the wall so that they would have some ready money when they returned to California. But most never came back, something that is clear upon your first visit when you have a chance to see all of the money that is still tacked up. Oakland, of course, is a port city and has been for a long time. Heinold’s, as you might suspect from the dollar bills signed by sailors, is a great way to appreciate a bit of maritime history. When you think about the dollar bills for a minute the name of the bar makes complete sense: It was a reference to the time that sailors had to drink heavy alcohol before heading out on a long voyage – the first and last chance. During Prohibition in the 1920s, the saloon stayed open selling soda pop and cigars. The term “last chance” is used by only a few saloons still standing in in the United States even though it was employed often in the 19th century. Heinold’s is the last commercial establishment anywhere in California that still uses its original gas lighting. The tables and other furnishings still date back to that old whaling ship from which the site was built. To this day, Heinold’s still houses the original potbellied stove used to warm the room; it’s been the establishment’s only source of heat since 1889. It’s not just the dive bar fans that recognize the value of Heinold’s First and Last Chance Saloon, though. In January of 1998 the Friends of Libraries U.S.A. added Heinold’s to the Literary Landmarks Register because of the role it played in inspiring some of Jack London’s famous novels. Only two years later, in 2000, the United States Federal Government listed Heinold’s on the National Register of Historic Places. According to oral tradition passed down through the ages from barkeep to barkeep to patron, during the Great Depression this establishment stayed open by selling lemonade, cigars, and sarsaparilla. Just ask the barkeep for a printout of the history of Heinold’s, and he should have one for you. They also sell booklets and other trinkets that illustrate the wealth of history." - ATLAS_OBSCURA

Google
Go through time and drink at this historic place right next to Jack London's cabin. Tbh it's tiny inside so you will likely be outside like us. However the inside feels like a ship with the slant. You'll love the shack with brewskees. It's pretty good. I would say 7.5/10

Steven Ellison

Google
A really cool piece of history. They have a large patio outside which seemed dog friendly. The inside is really funky and historic. The bartender checks ALL IDs, which made a bunch of people in our group feel young haha. A good selection of beers, looks like they do some whiskey too but didn't explore that option. Watch your step when you go inside!

Google
I had heard about this unique piece of history and made a point of checking it out when I was in the Bay Area less than a week ago. Heinold's has been open continuously since 1883, it became known as the "First and Last Chance Saloon" because it was the first and last stop for generations of sailors to get a drink before either shipping out or returning from a long voyage at sea. The floor is slanted due to the pilings beneath shifting during the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. There is a clock on the wall opposite the bar which stopped at 5:18, the exact moment of the quake 119 years ago. Another unique feature of this place, which was frequented regularly by Jack London from the time he was a boy, is that it is the last business in California which has gaslights. If you like to have drink here and there and also like to soak up some history come and check this place out if you find yourself in Oakland...

Stu Pidasso

Google
This place is a trip. Super old the floor is purposely not level. The bartender will check everybody’s ID for some reason. $8 a beer. Not a lot of seating inside. It’s a small place probably smaller than 20‘ x 20‘. Most people will sit outside. Good choice of craft beers. Dogs not allowed inside only on the patio. I would say you really only want to go to this place if the weather is nice outside

Google
The mystery surrounding this place adds to its appeal. The dress code is enforced so read up on that prior to attending. Service was ok, and the four course dinner allows you some options. Food was good, not what I expected. Worth a visit for sure, some people are hooked. Personally glad I came and we overall had a good time. ALSO LOTS of tough guys here as it is a biker bar.

Jason Cleveland

Google
Dark and unbalanced. But in a good way. You will know what I mean when you visit. Great atmosphere. Much history. Go there just to go there!

Google
This place is fun. The staff was amazing the inside is small, but I sat inside because the bartender was so much fun. There is a lot of outdoor seating as well. Great place, and I highly recommend it.

David Baker

Google
A unique historic place to enjoy adult beverages in the heart of Jack London Square. Great views of the marina, estuary and San Francisco. Very friendly bartender. Indoor and outdoor seating. Restrooms are available for customers. A step down and back into history. Enjoy 🍻

Yelp
Heinhold's is an Oakland, Bay Area, and literary institution considering Jack London's history with the establishment. And short but sweet, it's probably not going to be for everyone. Despite the stellar location on the Embarcadero in Jack London Square, the area is surrounded by the odd collection of restaurants and businesses that constantly seem to be in flux. Even before the pandemic, businesses came and went and business ventures like the next door structure that was supposed to be Oakland's answer to the SF Ferry Building food court never managed to get funding to finish. When the pandemic wiped out the last few old school eateries along the waterfront, and with the death of Eat Real Fest, the loss of the Sunday organic farmers market, and the rampant car break-ins and crime in the neighborhood, the area can be a ghost town at times. But other than modifying their hours through it all, Heinhold's has remained unchanged over the course of all the decades. It's still got an interior that's comically leaning from settling over the past century. They still card everyone who wants a drink. They still pot the coldest selection of beers on Embarcadero that can be enjoyed on their outside boardwalk deck. And they still have the best vantage for people watching and staring off into space while nursing a beer or cocktail (their bloody Mary's are epic). For those of us who live a couple of blocks away, Heinhold's remains a small bit of continuity and stability in a constantly shifting and uncertain neighborhood. Sure there are shiny new breweries that seem to open every few months in Jack London Square. But sometimes the soul craves some history and quirkiness over "shiny and new." Here's to another century for Heinhold's!

Yelp
Located in Oakland by the Jack London Square area, this place has been open since 1883. As you walk in, you will immediately notice that this place is tiny. There's also a big slant in the floor as a result from a partial sinking during the 1906 earthquake. there's also a replica of Jack London's cabin right outside built from original logs from his last home. The person here was super friendly when I walked in and the drinks here are super reasonably priced. Yes, it's old, it's tiny, but there's a sort of romanticism about this place that I personally enjoy. I've been here before, but I wanted to stop by and re-visit this place. Also, I wanted to order a B&E Whiskey while drinking in the tiny room at the back table to channel my inner Jack London, haha. This whiskey was made or at least bottled right across the bridge in Alameda. I love these type of places because I'm not a big fan of museums. So for me being able to kind of see a type of history and drink whiskey... well that's like the Shohei Ohtani of sightseeing. Just a cool spot to check out when you're in town or by the area.

Yelp
Love this bar because of the decor & history! Drink was cheap too. I would go back here!

Yelp
Whenever I host out-of-town visitors, our adventures often lead us to the charm of Jack London Square, where I'm eager to share the rich history of one of my favorite saloons. On a recent Monday afternoon, with three guests in tow, we found ourselves at the saloon's door at 2:30 PM, slightly ahead of its opening time at 3 PM. DUE TO our tight schedule precluding a return visit later, an encounter with an employee outside sweeping unfortunately didn't allow for even a brief peek inside, despite our polite request TWICE. This interaction was a tad disappointing, particularly since a quick glance would have been brief. However, this experience hasn't dimmed my affection for the bar and its storied past, which remains a highlight of our local tours.

Yelp
This is really a classic spot in the area. They are a landmark, the prices are reasonable, and there's a nice vibe going on. No reason not to go if you are in the area.

Yelp
I usually come here after I'm done browsing during the Sunday farmers market. I like sitting outside when it's sunny with a book and a nice IPA. However the last time I visited the bartender was unnecessarily rude. For reference, from New York and by no means, am I lighthearted to curt bartenders, but I thought that the lady working this day was a little wild. These two guys came in and asked if they served Miller light and instead of saying yes or no she said the options are behind you in the rudest way -- the two guys left because they were offended and afterwards she made fun of them to another patron saying they were sensitive and followed up with, "who orders a Miller light like how basic can you get"? The patron she was talking to was clearly uncomfortable. there's usually a guy working when I come who is always nice, so I was shocked by this encounter and my friend and I drank our beers and headed out right after to avoid being victim to this lady's bad energy

Yelp
I love the aesthetics, vibe, and prices of this bar. It has affordable prices and nice bartenders. The interior itself has personality with a slanted bar table, an antique, fully-functioning cash register, and hats hanging from the ceiling. A fake spider on a string was dropped on my table by my bartender Zach and it made me laugh. Sitting outside on the patio was an equally enjoyable experience as I got to view the sunset at Jack London Square. I enjoyed the beautiful views and the carefree, relaxing vibes. FYI, they don't have a bathroom on-site. You have to walk a couple of seconds to the bathroom owned by the Jack London Square Marina.

Yelp
Love this bar! Feels like you make your way into the tiny saloon and are transported back into history. It's always tough to get a seat inside, but they have a large outdoor area where you can enjoy the view. Good, strong, affordable drinks too.

Yelp
FOR REAL????? I can't come have drinks nor sit on the property because my license was expired????? REALLY??? Do not come here if your license is expired. Farmhouse and Left Bank Brasserie gladly took my money!!!

Yelp
Cool little bar on the waterfront. Lots to see in there and the beer is nice and cold.

Yelp
The original Dive Bar. This little watering hole is not only a historical structure, its the longest running bar in the state. A unique combination of history and local flair, my recent trip to Jack London Square had me standing at the front door, stepping down and back in time. This tiny bar dates back to the 1880s and its sloped flooring remains as it was after the 1906 earthquake. This was an old hangout for London himself and many a sailor before him. A great outside Over 21 Only area to sit and enjoy the moment, it was comfortable and very relaxing on my visit. A knowledgeable barkeep and a locals feel, this is one of the places you need to make a stop by if you're ever in the neighborhood. 4 Stars just on the great original building on its own, bonus that its a bar - definitely worth a stop 00822

Korina F.

Yelp
Fun place and great drinks. Friendly bar tender and clientele. If you don't know the history of the place it's worth looking up before you visit. Amazing to think about the oyster pirates and gold rushers who sat here drowning their sorrows or celebrating a win.

Yelp
I've known this place since I had my own bar on Broadway was involved with the clubs in the East Bay Area. I silks Charlie Brown's luckylion. in Oakland, equinox and zaas on Grand Ave., Miss Ivy downtown Oakland, Overland house Rusty scupper and others. Lotta people may remember where square apple or tower power starter on Broadway. The East Bay was the hottest place for a lot of nightclubs on Broadway

Yelp
Why do I always forget to come here. I don't live that far away I live in San Leandro. I came a few weeks ago in the afternoon after stopping at Mr Espresso to pick up some coffee. I figured I'd grab some food at the taco truck down the street and have it with a drink at the First and Last Chance Saloon. This place is an Oakland gem. I think it's been here a while. Just kidding. It's been here forever... I figured since the weather was beautiful I'd have a drink outside and look at the scenery of Jack London Square. I need to do this more often and afternoon is a perfect time to come. Although I've been here in the evening too and it's a little more fun. If you've never been, then you need to come. And if you have been you might have been like me and forget to come. It's a good place to spend some time. The drinks are reasonably priced and the bartenders are always pretty cool!

Yelp
What a cute little place to pop into! It's quirky and intriguing with its extremely slanted floor, pieces of Americana overfilling the walls, and heavily patinaed woods. And yet, it somehow remains cozy. The prices of the drinks were very reasonable and the pours were nice and heavy. They have a great outdoor space for you to people watch and soak in the sun for a midday drink. Everyone in Heinold's was very friendly. Warm welcoming vibes for sure. Heinold's is well worth a visit if you have never been. Cheers!

Yelp
Great bar in Jack London square! We walked pass this place so many times but never tried it before. Turned out this is a hidden gem with a really cool bar, interesting history & nice drink collection. We sit outside for a bit while waiting for the table inside since it's a really small place. If you sit on the right table inside, there would be a surprise from the staff for you lol. It was also really interesting to read about the history of this place and find out it's one of those Oakland's landmarks. Next time when you have friends or family in town, you might want to consider taking them here for their drinks & history.

Yelp
While I never served in the armed forces my grandfathers did. One in the Navy, the other in the Coast Guard during WW2. I have an affinity for these services I inherited from them and their experiences. Walking into a bar which was operating when they left the Bay Area for the war brought waves of emotions. Our beers were cold, my wife's G&T mixed well. We've sat inside and out, and recommend doing both. Heinold's is a departure from the other establishments in Jack London Square, and shouldn't be missed.
google avatar

Vicky M.

Yelp
Cute little hidden bar! Have Walked down Jack London square so many times and I can't believe I hadn't noticed this place before. Kinda small and hot inside, but there is plenty of outdoor seating. I'd go back next time I'm there and want to enjoy a nice beer outdoors!
google avatar

James F.

Yelp
Historical dive bar that has tons of history. Very nice to sit outside on the patio and enjoy the estuary and marina.

Kristen G.

Yelp
I was there early enough in the day to get kicked off the patio so they could open the umbrellas. AND I'D DO IT AGAIN. If you're here for a rollicking bar scene, I'm not sure this is the place for you. But if you're here for some history with a side of nostalgia, it's perfect. Read up on it before you go and you'll get a good dose of Jack London knowledge. Worth it.

Yelp
I love this bar - it is a great place to chill, have a drink or two, and enjoy the historic nature of the landmark. I used to live in the apartments down the street and was a frequent visitor of this bar - so much so that the bartender knew me and my order. We always got great service and it was always so much people-watching to do. Reasons to visit: Historical Landmark, see Jack London; Also, Jack London's house is about 200 feet away. The staff is friendly. You have to see the fire-scorched ceiling and artifacts. The slanted bar and the slanted floors. What more do I have to say to convince you to visit this place?
google avatar

Courtney W.

Yelp
Really cool spot but not disabled friendly for actually getting drinks. I sat at the table with my mobility aid for about 15 min. Then I went to the entry to check on what was up. I am able to use steps so I was able to enter the space. I was told ordering was only at the bar. I mentioned it was not accessible friendly. Of course the bar tender has no control over that. I understand it is a historical site but there should be some accommodations for ordering from the outside tables.

Yelp
Great service! Good drinks and the story of that place is amazing. Plus the sarcasm of the bartender is on point. Thanks Lauren!!

Yelp
While I was enjoying my day exploring Oaklands chinatown and Jack London Square Marina, I stumbled across a tiny cabin right next to Jack Londons original cabin. To my surprise, it was a saloon! What's a better way to enjoy the beautiful view that Oakland has to offer? Accompanied by one of the many ice cold local beers on tap of course! As I walked in, I was instantly greeted by a friendly smile behind the bar. The middle aged bartender (forgot to get his name) started explaining all the different types of beers they had on tap, very knowledgable about his craft to say the least. We started discussing what type of beer I like and don't like, and he recommended one. I was doing photography around the marina and we started talking about cameras, to my surprise he was also knowledgable about that as well, jack of all trades I see. I decided to sit in their patio area to enjoy my beer and take in the view. It was my first time ever in Oakland and this interaction/experience was exactly what I needed to end my day off right. Great bartender, great beer, and great vibes with a beautiful view. When I visit Oakland again, I will definitely be back for a beer or two...or three lol

Yelp
This charming bar lost it's charm when we brought our family from out of town to peek in. We had no intention of staying and ordering, but rather to show them a place we have known since our days at Cal, decades ago. Our grandson was outside on the empty patio. The adults were peeking in when a waitress came up to us and yelled to leave immediately: "You are not welcome here!!!! No children!!!" We were shocked by how rude she was to us humans, and almost laughed when we later saw her petting a large dog. Some people are kinder to animals than to people. As we entered the courtyard we saw a sign that said no children and missed another sign that said no children outside. Clearly our mistake, but kindness would have been appreciated.

Yelp
Wow what a shitty experience. The person with the star tattoo on her face was very rude

Yelp
Bartender was extremely rude. Asked for IDs and as my friend brought his out, after saying he wasn't drinking, the bartended said "well if you don't show it, you can't be on the premises". This was all while my friend's ID was in his hand, about to hand it over to her. She then asked for mine back and said she obviously hadn't looked at it thinking we would leave. I just wanted to have a beer and left feeling very upset.

Yelp
Don't waste your time bartender was yelling and cussing at customers and so very rude!!! We left did not want to spend our money in a place that does not welcome people.

Yelp
What a fun spot. The bar is slanted. And the drinks are straight up good. Self service order at the bar then sit outside and enjoy people watching and outdoor views. Great place.

Yelp
If you love a rude bartender that puts you down, this is your place! I thought this place was one of those bars where the staff is rude to you as a joke. NOT THE CASE. I came here with coworkers for some team bonding. We sat outside while a few went in to grab some drinks. I Immediately knew something was wrong when they walked outside. For some reason the "lady" bartender was SO RUDE to them. They wanted to order their drinks and pay separately and the "lady" gave them shit for it. Telling them something along the lines of "You need to get some friends to buy your drinks for you" and proceed to charge $8/drink in flimsy plastic cups. After this "lady" was done pouring drinks she decided to come outside and give us more shit for touching the umbrella. "Are you holding on to it so it doesn't fly away?" Wow. After we all felt like shit for being treated like absolute garbage, we went across the way where we were welcomed. We then proceeded to spend lots of money on large drinks in actual glasses.

Yelp
History so real you can taste and smell it... down to the real gas lamps, working hard to provide some light in this small dark drinking hole. Ample space outside with dog friendly benches. I can imagine on a warm summer evening this place gets raucous. I understand why! The Drinks in plastic cups are ample and inexpensive, providing easy opportunities for anyone to acquire the liquid guts to say anything to anybody for any reason. Equal part bar fight about to happen and hook up spot. Depending on which way your drunken ass roles, you could wake up bloody, bruised and with the requisite head ache, alone in a gutter... ...Or in an unfamiliar bed with the same pounding headache, next to Broom Hilda, who last night looked like Salma Hayek. The head banging music audible, not thumping enough to cause a riot is mellowed by ageless antiquities from a bygone era. Part bar, part museum, park your compulsive hoarding grandpas garage. Fun times are most likely in store!

Yelp
Been here many times over the years always had a great experience. The last experience however was unbelievably bad. The bartender yelled at me for going to use the restroom. Made me show my ID and was incredibly aggressive. She then refused to serve our group because one of our guests didn't have an ID and would not even allow us to sit outside. The 6 people in our group were all 70 years or older and this woman ranted about the fact she was a federal employee. Made no sense and ruined what had been a great day. We will never go back.

Yelp
Extremely rude bartender was screaming and yelling at customers. Not the first time I've seen it happen. Awful.

Yelp
Walked in to have a few beers before dinner. My wife and I were IDd. I'm we are both WELL OVER 21. My wife forgot her ID at home so they wouldn't serve us. I understand about the "rules", but seriously????

Yelp
I've had this spot bookmarked for some time and it turns out I have been walking past it for months now! I often go to the farmers market at Jack London Square and somehow the saloon never caught my eye. It is pretty unassuming at first and truthfully, looks very out of place among the modern restaurants that line the Embarcadero. But once you enter the actual saloon you're transported back in time to the 1880's. The ceiling is lined with business cards stained almost black from decades of cigarette smoke. And the saloon itself is slanted in, not unlike a fun house, from the 1906 earthquake. They have some local beers on tap and a full liquor bar. Plus there's lots of outdoor seating overlooking the water - great date spot for sure. We ended up chatting with some folks who had docked their boat nearby to stop in for a beer, just as the bar was intended. The charm and history here certainly makes for a unique and fun drinking experience!

Yelp
One of the bartenders is extremely rude, disrespectful and condescending. Have seen her blow up at customers over simple matters. Very unpleasant.

Yelp
I was referred here by a fisherman friend and he was spot one! If you are in Jack Landon Square you must stop in for a drink!!! Very cool old tavern!

Yelp
This is simply a special place. Although it could easily be a tourist trap, it isn't. It's a legit small, clearly loved, tiny historical Time Capsule that can't be missed. I loved this place when I lived Oakland 20 years ago and I still love this place today.

Yelp
Such a cute little hole in the wall. I was passing by and saw that this place had outdoor seating and decided to stop in on a Sunday afternoon. I saw a plaque outside that said the bar was established in the 1800s. This little place had so much character, even the bartender inside was dressed like it was an old bar. They had a few beers on tap and I ordered a Racer 5. They also have a full bar to select from. Great prices and good service.

Yelp
One of the oldest bars in California. Loads of character and the occasional "character". If you enjoy old timey bars then this is a must-stop for you.

Yelp
Came here to chill and this saloon was super cozy. Inside has some seating. Bar is tiny but you just order, grab your drinks and go find a place to sit. They play music and have picnic tables outside to enjoy ur drink. Super chill place with affordable drinks.

Yelp
I usually love this place for the great drinks and outdoor views. I was there just last weekend and everything was fine. However, the employee (male, maybe mid 30's-early 40's) at the front of the outdoor area was just plain rude today. Upon approaching the entrance to the seating area, the greeter (he definitely wasn't doing that) was immediately off putting. I asked if they could seat 5 for a table, and he goes "5 what ?" in a snarky tone. Without changing his attitude or tone he goes "humans?" and when I asked him why he was giving me attitude, he responds with "I was just kidding." Again, he made no change in tone or attitude, and was lacking a smile or any cue suggesting it was a joke. I told him it wasn't funny. He then asks "do you want to sit here?" and I reply "yes" to which he mocks "why are you giving me attitude?" I immediately say "yeah we don't want to stay here" and he gives no apologies and makes no attempt to rectify the situation. I am all for joking and a good time. However, this guy failed to make any of this situation funny or enjoyable, and just seemed plain rude. Since he is the one giving a first impression to customers, he definitely needs to learn how to be a better greeter at this business. This guy's attitude will cost this bar money if he keeps speaking to customers the way he did with me today. I am disappointed in my experience today as I had 4 other friends who were excited to check out the bar for their first time. I will not be coming back and will tell friends and family to stay away.

Yelp
The Jack London saloon where he wrote, drank and lived life. Super interesting place to visit. We loved it.

Yelp
Best well vodka in Jack London Square. Solid pours, at reasonable prices. Watch out if you're a good tipper. This is of course a historic bar, a famous place, and while the bartenders are pretty much all business, all the ones I've had have been VERY good. And the ambiance inside is great when there's not a pandemic on. Outside is also excellent - despite the late afternoon Bay Breeze, the patio seating is very nice, it's always quiet enough to be heard, with enough ambient sound to not worry about being overheard. The occasional Amtrak horn blast can also make for a good romantic pause in the conversation for those here on a date. Heinold's doesn't have super fancy cocktails at mortgage-busting prices. They don't have a particularly exotic ethnic flair, or even peanuts or popcorn to pad out their offerings. But... They don't need it. You get a full service bar, with a nice selection of beers on tap, and a crazy angle to the floor that makes you feel drunk when you walk in sober - but that becomes increasingly level with each drink. Highly recommended for visitors in town, or a first/second date - you can precede or follow the bar with a walk along the estuary, or a dip over the Ben and Jerry's for an ice cream. Amazing in summer, and a nice "secret" day bar in the colder months that you might have to yourself for an hour or more, sipping on a nice beverage while reading a book or something.

Yelp
Happiness - 5.5/5 (that's right... it BROKE the scale) Drink-worthiness - 4/5 I am so glad to come upon this place - it's easily one of the best bars I've been to, bar none. It has pretty much everything you want. Historic building brimming with character? Outdoor patio? Proximity to trendy eateries? A view of the water? Check, check, check, and a fourth check for good measure. But it even has things you never knew you wanted. As has been mentioned in other reviews, the floor was damaged in an earthquake so the bar is at a severe slant which is unique and fun. Every inch of the bar has a cool memento or quirky item from the past. They have a hand-cranked movie machine and a radio from the early 1900s - both of which function. The bartender was also slickly dressed and incredibly engaging, carrying a friendly conversation and also giving us trivia about the bar's history. The mixed drinks are really well made. The only downer is that the beer list is extremely limited. But it's certainly fun to watch beer be poured in a tilted bar. Also, be sure to ask them for the story of the level that some patrons tried to use at the bar many decades ago - it's a really fun tale.

Yelp
The bartender was extremely rude & condescending. It was an older woman. Didn't get her name. Made my coworkers & I feel super unwelcome & I'm actually really sorry that I gave them my money. Never again.

Yelp
It may be your first, but it definitely won't be your last! Heinold's First and Last Chance is a legendary dive bar located in Oakland's Jack London Square. Dark, low key, a little grimey, super cozy, and hella cheap beer! If that doesn't scream hoppin' dive, than I don't know what else will. You wanna have a good time?! Well, Heinold's will show you a good time! I first must mention what this bar is known for; it's slanted bar. To be honest, I don't really know the entire history behind how it ended up being slanted. However, this slanted bar is iconic and one of the main attractions for visitors and regulars alike. It's always fun to watch the bartenders poor beers in the crooked glasses! I've always wanted one of them to just slide my beer all the way down to the end of bar, but there's a possibility that it could get a bit messy. The beers are good and best of all, they're CHEAP! Looove me some cheap tasty beers! They keep a rotating tap of mostly local and popular drafts, and they're usually only $5 a pop! The bartenders are super friendly and are always having a good time. But watch out because they'll mess with you! I felt something crawling on my head the last time I was here, and noticed that they had put a fake tarantula on me! It was funny AFTER the fact, but I did kind of freak out a bit at first. The knick knacks here are just so unreal! This place has all KINDS of things hanging from the ceiling! From hats to stuffed animals, you'll be sure to find something that sparks your amusement. The inside is super tiny, but people cram in here to enjoy their beers with the low key atmosphere. The vibe is extremely casual and relaxing. I wouldn't recommend it for super large groups, only because space is limited. They have a front deck with tables as well, but last I checked, they don't allow drinking in that area... womp womp. This is such a fun establishment! It's the perfect place to knock back a few while enjoying the diverse crowd amongst you. Perfect for small get togethers with friends! Heinold's is a fun time just waiting to happen!

Yelp
A very cool hideout from the heat. You can wet your whistle here and enjoy listening to music from the past. The establishment has a good vibe and beware of the limited seating. They do have outdoor seating but you will miss the nostalgia that surrounds you when inside. Bartender has been their over 10 years and has several stories to share about the place. The city is working hard to revitalize the surroundings and they are doing a pretty good job. Nice restaurants in the area that are enjoyable to everyone!

Yelp
I'm not sure how to describe this dive bar. I love the fact that it resembles a small hut with lots of people sitting around mingling and just enjoying a fresh bottle of beer. I can tell there's lots of regulars because their bartenders just have a kick with the crowd. The place is dark and is only lit by the amount of sunlight that comes through the rustic doors; take it or leave it. I recommend sipping on beer as oppose to having a regular cocktail. Only reason is because this place is more like a beer house with local Bay Area brew. I highly suggest trying Drake's 1500 which is a Pale Ale and super crisp on a nice sunny day. They take card too so don't worry about "CASH ONLY" policy.
