Leghorn Chicken Review - Ukrainian Village - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Political views and nutritional value aside, Chick Fil A is the gold standard when it comes to fried chicken sandwiches. We aren’t sure if our ATL friends have successfully made this happen, but god d*mn is a Chick Fil A sandwich and sweet tea good. So when you open a specialty fried chicken sandwich restaurant, we are going to compare, and Leghorn came out firing with gourmet fried chicken sandwiches in a hip Ukrainian Village setup. We were hoping Leghorn would be one of our favorite go to spots for a quick bite, but unfortunately this is one of the more disappointing reviews we’ve had to write. Visually and on paper, Leghorn is a dream. Unlike the problems with Chick Fil A (it’s still fast food after all), Leghorn is a champion of farm raised chickens, fresh ingredients, and a real hands on approach. So what’s with all the negativity? Because the flavors inexplicably fall flat. We don’t understand why, and we can’t really explain it, but almost everything here tastes bland. The best part of Leghorn is the space and the vibe. It’s a small, cash only, BYOB spot, where you order at a counter and food is delivered shortly thereafter. It’s a raw space with exposed wood, a few tables, and some counter seats. Rap can often be heard and the menu looks like it was personally delivered by an angel, a combination of Fergie and Jesus. Everything about Leghorn screams “I’m awesome,” except for the food. A second location opened in River North, but that news doesn’t excite us as much as it should. Food Rundown Fried Chicken Sandwiches Despite a couple other options, fried chicken sandwiches are the premise of Leghorn. There are three core steps to building a sandwich: 1. Breast or thigh meat, 2. Pickle brined or Nashville hot, 3. Biscuit or bun. Sounds delicious, but it falls short. The pickle brined chicken has very little flavor, it’s juicy, but bland. Nashville hot is only slightly better, but it’s more so spice you taste than actual flavor. The biscuits are pretty uneventful too, which is a real shame. Homemade sauces like buttermilk rancho verde, spicy mayo, and honey mustard will cover up some of the disappointment, but only so much. Gun to our heads we order the Nashville hot on a bun with extra rancho verde, and then make a stop at Chick Fil A on the way home. Green Chile Hush Puppies Best thing here. These large and fluffy pups go from average to pretty good with the green chili addition. Get the sauces involved too. Hand-Cut Nori Fries The crisp is good, but just like the chicken, they lack in flavor. Shaved Vegetable Slaw A mix of shaved carrots, radish, beets, celery, and apple. A light and refreshing slaw. Sweet Tea If swimming in sweet tea and drinking a pool of it dry was an option, count me in. This sugary southern staple is so good on a hot day." - Sam Faye

Helen’s Hot Chicken Opening in Downtown Atlanta - Eater Atlanta

"Nashville-based Helen's Hot Chicken is opening its first Atlanta restaurant in early 2019. Helen's is located in the 200 Edgewood student housing complex close to Sweet Auburn Curb Market and Georgia State University downtown. Helen’s hot chicken menu includes breast and leg quarters, wingettes, and tenders in four levels of heat: plain, mild, hot, and hella hot. Chicken is made-to-order and doesn’t drop into the fryer until ordered at the counter. The restaurant’s fried seafood like shrimp, whiting, and catfish and its specialty drinks such as hella mango tea are also very popular with regulars." - Beth McKibben

We came down from Maine to Nashville and we wanted to explore the best food we can find, and we found ourselves here! We saw everyone stopping to go in, so we knew it just had to be delicious! I swear, in maybe 5 minutes there had to have been 10 orders+ picked up!! The customer service was amazing and everyone was so kind! We ordered the 3 strip basket, when I say this was the juiciest, most tender, beautifully crispy tenders we have ever had I mean it! We have nothing even close to this good local, at all, to us! When we come back we will definitely be stopping by again. Thank you guys so much for the amazing experience!

The fried chicken here is great! I got the “Hella” flavor and it was definitely hot, but not overly spicy. It’s the kind of Nashville hot where the fire builds up with the more you eat of it. I was tearing up by the end but it was still delicious and enjoyable. I do have a high spice tolerance so it might not be for everyone. There is apparently another option for a hotter flavor that’s not included on the menu. The chicken leg quarter was very tender and the skin was very crispy. I got coleslaw as my side but I was not a fan of it because it is chopped into very small pieces so the texture is mushy and it is very sweet. But that’s just my personal preference. The workers are very friendly and kind. Parking is difficult in the area unless you park in the Panera parking lot (which has signs you may be towed) or do street parking (which is very limited). They have a bathroom and a small seating area in the basement.

I went here to try their version of Nashville Hot. And I did. I got a quarter dark at mild and it was good. Delicious honestly. But I also got one piece of catfish, and it was the best catfish I have ever had in my life! The mild seasoning was perfect and didn’t overpower the fish. It was cooked perfectly rare and melted in my mouth. It also tasted clean, which catfish sometimes tastes a little like dirt. I also had the fried okra and it was perfection. It was the first day of summer, in an old shack of a building off 21st, so it was not as cool as most of us like it, but honestly made it feel like a chicken shack. Folks running the place were highly engaged with the clientele, responsive and friendly. A great experience and I will go back next time I am in Nashville, but I will only be eating the catfish!

This place was awesome. My daughter was wanting some seriously hot chicken and this place did not disappoint. She went with the hella hot. The chicken was incredibly fresh. They told us when we ordered it would take a few minutes because the food was prepared fresh when ordered. It was tender, juicy and most of all HOT!. The staff were wonderful, especially Marquise! She was a real sweetheart. The potato salad was also especially good--tasted like someone's grandmother made it--I could have eaten another helping of it! Totally recommend this place if you are looking for great atmosphere, friendly staff and HOT chicken!!

I paid over $30 for two fish combos and what I got was one sad sandwich with barely any fish, no condiments, another full sandwich and missing fries on both combos. When I called to politely let them know, the staff showed no professionalism. For the price, this is unacceptable. Do better, Helen’s.

This food was so BOMBBBB…!!! The star of the show was the mild fried lobster tail. Everything was piping hot and fresh and amazing. Hands down best chicken and seafood I’ve had this in Nashville

If you are visiting from out of town this is a great spot! Owners are awesome and I can tell they care. They made sure we ordered the right things and amount of food. I love a chicken sandwich so that is what I ordered. And I have never had cat fish before. They recommended it and it was amazing! I would definitely do that again! In fact I’m staying multiple nights and I’m already planning if I can squeeze another lunch or dinner in before I leave. I love restaurants that you see a couple passionate about food and want to share it with the world. Positive experience!
