Hello Deli

A plain bagel with cream cheese, jelly, and bacon is absolutely delicious. I’d probably go back to NYC just to have another highly recommend.

Really unpretentious place to get a sandwich. Great food cooked to order in front of you. Great!

Friendly guys behind the counter. The bacon chopped cheese was decent. The bacon egg and cheese on a croissant was slightly burnt and left more to be desired.

I was greeted immediately entering the deli and I had one of the best breakfast rolls I've had in a while! Light rolls with nice thick cut bacon are always a great sell for me. Had a nice conversation with the woman and they were so nice and welcoming so I'll definitely pop in when I'm in the area again!!

BOOOO!! Google says this place is open and I was super looking forward to going here. It looks to be CLOSED semi-permanently with another sign draped over the "Hello" part. They should have at least updated Google to not waste people's time. Very disappointed.

FANTASTIC egg and cheese sandwiches. It's in the details—the rolls they use are crisp yet soft—and they toast them on the griddle by default. The super friendly staff always asks if you want salt, pepper, ketchup instead of leaving you to disassemble the sandwich to put them on yourself later (as too many delis do). And, for a place in the heart of a tourist area, it's super reasonable. Has become a morning routine for me. A++++ Would buy again!

Great breakfast sandwich. Super friendly staff. Tons of options and they'll make it however you like it.

An obscure deli in the middle of the block and let me tell you it's worth the effort to find it. Staff very friendly, had someone at the register to answer questions while the cook made magic over the grill. Food was seriously reasonably priced. Their on a roll was $3.99. Wide selection of options for drinks also. They had a small table with 2 chairs in front, two seats inside to wait for your order.

Rupert is gone. Dude didn't even know what is in a BLT. It's sad but life is impermanent, especially in midtown.

This review is for breakfast. Breakfast sandwich was tiny, egg way over cooked(burned) and super salty. Had to throw away. The breakfast wrap was also gross. This place has high reviews but must be for lunch. Had to throw everything away.

I don't know why this place has such a high rating. The food is average at best. I ordered a New Yorker in a roll and my son ordered a cheese burger with fries. The guy who made the food was helpful and friendly but the quality of the food was not great. The food was made fresh but it was nothing I couldn't make in 5 minutes at home. Bread was okay, the meats were whatever. They don't have much in the way of seating but they do have 2 small tables outside. They were both filthy with dirt, coffee, and food stains. In a pinch and if there is nothing else to eat, come here but don't go out of your way; it will disappoint.

I don't fan-girl much, but when I do, it's usually over something stupid. Today, Rupert himself made me a sandwich. I can't believe he is still doing this. Anyhow, the sandwich is also incredible--but, having it made by Rupert made it priceless. Now I just need to be thrown out by the Soup Nazi, and my life will be complete. I've lived here all these years and I didn't realize Rupert was still running his deli. As for the food, I had the NY'er. The sandwich was on the level of Katz. If you don't know what that means--it means it was old school incredible. Seeing Rupert today made me forget about Diaper Don selling secrets, missiles from Russia with love, and WWIII starting in Taiwan after just one bite.

Even if I didn't love Rupert from his time on the Late Show, I'd still give this deli a 5 star review. The place is tiny. There's no seating inside, so all orders are to go. I got the Letterman sandwich, which was Turkey, ham, cheese, peppers, lettuce and tomato. Even during the lunch rush, the service was friendly and fast. The lady taking orders and money was friendly and fast. In Manhattan, you won't find a better sandwich including chips for the price, $8-9.

Wanted to grab a sandwich for our flight home, read the reviews and we are staying close by so decided to support a local business. Via online ordering I choose the Letterman and noted no ham, extra turkey. Hubby got a veggie wrap with cheese. Through the Yelp photos, I saw that they carry Wise chips, our favorite! Sent hubby to pick up with no problem. Well, when I opened my sandwich at the airport, I received the Italian which was actually fine and delicious. Just be sure to check your order. Looking forward to coming back here again to work my way around the menu!

I can here on my last day of vacation and wish I would have found this place on day 1. The bacon, egg and cheese roll was so damn delicious. Also tried "The Dougy" which included a hash brown inside the bacon, egg and cheese roll. Then, I tried the New Yorker recommended by the wonderful owner, May. The New Yorker consists of pastrami, corned beef, sauerkraut l, coleslaw and mustard. The perfect sandwich to take on your flight back home. May... Ruby and I are coming back to visit you soon! You're such a wonderful human being! Thanks for taking care of us. Don't forget to try mariscos (Mexican seafood). :)

Walked a Block and A Half wanting to try the New Yorker I saw online and The Great Customer Service. Wish it was Open. But all there was, is a Sign on he Door Promising to be open soon. Was totally let down.

This little delicatessen is right around the corner from the Ed Sullivan theater where they film the late show with Stephen Colbert. It is a hole in the wall that can seat about six people. Boxes are stacked up all around the entrance and you honestly wouldn't know it was a delicatessen until you went inside. But I am really glad that we did! They have an extensive sandwich menu with all kinds of different combinations. Both of us had the New Yorker, I had it with sauerkraut and my wife had it with coleslaw. I will tell you that it is arguably the best sandwich of that type that I have ever had. It was hot, gooey, and just a pile of deliciousness! I strongly recommend this place in the service was great. Extremely friendly staff which totally blew apart any stereotype that one might have about New Yorkers!

This place makes one of the best sandwiches I had. Although Rupert has gained fame through television , he offers great service without any ego trippin. I have much respect for such a business that offers great quality of food. The sausage and egg with cheese on a roll is a must for breakfast sandwich lovers.

This was our first time to NYC and we are so HAPPY to have found this little gem. The hospitality at this deli was world class. This is how it's supposed to be. They will customize your sandwich!! I had a simple Roast beef with avocado, and it was DELICIOUS! A must try before leaving NYC

In a previous review they said that the deli was closed for a brief time. Well according to the sign it has not been open since last May. Needless to say I was still hungry

Absolutely loved this place and the experience. The woman working the front counter (I assume owner) was the kindest lady. LOVED my bagel and lox sandwich. I'm hooked. From Indianapolis and already trying to plan my next trip to New York because I could eat that sandwich everyday. I will for sure be stopping by this place again.

Just ate breakfast there. Literally the best breakfast sandwich I've ever had, & I don't use literally flippantly. So cool to see Rupert! Highly recommend this place, you won't be disappointed.

Yay for Yelp for guiding us the this gem. This is the real deal! The most charming helpful owner, delicious, unlimited options. We had the New a Yorker with all the options, the Alan Kalter, potato salad, and the ice apple cider with ginger, cinnamon, and pepper. It's worth going just for this even if you're not hungry, big chucks of real apple and ginger - truly a smile in a cup. I can only imagine how comforting this would be hot on a snowy day.

First time to New York City and visiting Times Square. We absolutely loved our visit to the city and had an incredible week. So many great restaurants, so many incredible sites. I can honestly say that walking into Ruperts deli to grab a snack and a couple of beverages was one of the big highlights of our week. If you grew up like we did watching David Letterman every night and saw just a few of the dozens of times that Rupert was on the show -you might have the same feeling and experience. It was so unscripted, we walked by and saw the sign to the Deli and thought, wonder if he's actually owner of this place or was the whole thing done by an actor for Letterman's script? Sure enough we walked in and it was like meeting a big time movie star in plain clothes, and he looked exactly the same as when he first appeared on the show in 1993. Upon our arrival he offered to help and to pose in photos with us. He could not have been nicer! What an amazing surprise fun stop and experience during our week in the big Apple. Our hearts and prayers go out to Rupert and all the wonderful people in NYC during this difficult time. Be safe, be well, be healthy, be strong!

Rupert and Mai are two of the kindest business people in nyc. I frequented Hello Deli for 7 years thanks to my office being next door, and you couldn't find a better sandwich spot in all of midtown. The sandwiches are generously sized and made to order. Mai frequently made recommendations or thought of ways to combine new flavors and come up with new specials - my former boss ended up having a sandwich named after him after it proved popular! Lunch aside, Rupert and Mai always make you feel welcome and treat everyone with kindness. From regulars to tourists looking for a photo op, they always have a kind word as they send you off with your lunch. My office moved mid pandemic so I haven't been back but next time I'm in midtown, you can bet I'll be back for my pesto veggie sandwich (and I'm not even vegetarian!) from Hello Deli.

Not sure what all the hype is about in these reviews...ordered a standard sandwich with sweet peppers and it was significantly lower quality than any other sandwich I've ordered from a deli. The meat tasted prepackaged from the grocery store, not boars head or anything to my knowledge. At $9 for a small hero with turkey and cheese, this is most definitely not a good deal. Won't return. 2 stars solely for the friendly staff.

The New Yorker sandwich was delicious. Ive been to other famous sandwich shops and restaurants around nyc but they were overrated like how many tourist traps are. This shop is worth the stop and Ms. Jee was very very nice.

The place was pretty small, was no frills, and had an extensive menu of sandwiches. I noticed a lot of flies inside and the owners had to search for some hand sanitizer as me and my daughter decided to eat inside due to rain. My ham, cheese and turkey sandwich was pretty small and basic. My daughter had a grilled chicken with avocado and said the same thing. The bread was fresh and the levers were fairly nice. However, we probably won't be back as we weren't that impressed.

Just started working 2 blocks away and this might be on my go-to list for lunch! I got the KO - grilled chicken, avocado, pepper jack cheese , honey mustard and pesto on 7 grain bread....YUMMMM! Each sandwich comes with a bag of chips. My total was $9.25 ( FYI cash is preferred) Such sweet owners! They were so excited to learn about me so we chatted for a few minutes after I had already gotten my sandwich:) They also have a loyalty card where 10 purchases gets you a free sandwich. Maybe one day I'll head to the Colbert show after grabbing a sandwich!

Just moved into the neighborhood and saw this place on my way to work. The sandwich was delicious! The staff friendly. It seems they're affiliated with the Late Show next door. Definitely a nice way to start your mornings if you're looking for those carbs! I'll have to come back for their sandwiches.

Great little deli in a very central location. The staff were very friendly. I had the Alan Kalter and it was fantastic! I'll definitely be back, and even though I thoroughly believe that variety is the spice of life, I'll probably get the same thing!

Popped in to say hello to Rupert and grabbed a sandwich for the road. It was delicious, fresh, fast and affordable considering the area. I'll be back!

Fresh ingredients and bread. Sandwich size is on the smaller side. Not the classic "stacked high" New York deli sandwich. We thought $7.95 for that size sandwich was a bit steep. The inside of the deli is very crowded with inventory and messy. There is a chair or two if you want to eat amongst the clutter. We went in on a 90° day. It was hotter in there than it was on the street outside. They do not have air conditioning, at least not for the patrons.

This deli in terms of quality is one of the best in the area. The sandwiches are made to order exactly as asked, there are plenty of side items or other grill items other than a sandwich. One of the best things about this place is the atmosphere, Rupert and his wife are absolutely wonderful and very funny. There are some tables to sit at inside, these guys will take care of you. The prices are absolutely reasonable as well.

The definition of not judging a book by its cover! This place is really a hole in the wall but this sandwich SLAPPED, and everyone in my party loved theirs as well! The customer service was excellent they were very nice . They also got us our food fast even though they were busy at the time. It was limited seating but that was fine honestly bc we were a small group.

I'm glad to have another sandwich spot in the neighborhood. My told me that this was her favorite sandwich place and told me I must go. I enjoyed it. These sandwiches are all named after late night hosts and NYC. It feels very mom &pop and like you can run into somebody famous if you sit outside long enough. Recommend!

Never been disappointed. Ever. I enjoy the people who work their immensely. Always happy to see you and greet you with smiles. Remember you and your order. Normally I'm a creature of habit but here i like to switch it up. Also, get the French fries. Crispy and soft.

Walked all the way from Pearl Street in NYC to try this place.....first time..trying always remember seeing it on David Letterman show.. Was famished when I got their from the 1 hour and 20 minute walk....But the Roast Beef sandwich I had was outstanding and hit the spot ...even took one for the walk back to Pearl Street...along with Jon Beckerman burger for my friend she even loved it...after her night out doing sessions at her local Domme Club..she was very pleased

so I was intrigued by the gluten free potential because I've recently found out I have an intolerance it's pretty sad blah blah so I stand outside and I'm like hmm. Maybe. Obviously I've been living under a ROCK because this place is THE BOMB. May, behind the counter, asked me what I wanted for lunch and I genuinely had no idea. So she offered to help me figure it out? And consequently made me the best fish taco wrap I've had from a deli / diner ever! The salsa and veggies.. combination of flavors.. truly a fantastic wrap. Banana peppers were a fab touch. I forgot to mention I was gluten free WHOOPS. No regrets. Will be back to try the KO, Swiss/Tuna melt, and really everything on that menu because dzdzdzdzamn. It was good.

Bagels in New York yeah yeah - BUT this gaff hits the spot with their breakfast bagels perfectly. Bacon and bacon and bacon and eggs cooked perfectly and a fresh bagel to enjoy them on is a great start to any day and for less then 5$ - you cant beat that! Plus, coffee is not bad at all either...little gem of a place.

Forget the hype, forget Letterman, forget all the things that put Hello Deli on the map. This place has plain old, good sandwiches. We had a Farmer's club - a BLT with egg salad and generous slices of ham (ham and bacon on the same sandwich - these guys know what their customers like!) and a Hello Deli club. The bacon was as crispy as the lettuce, the tomatoes were ripe and not too runny, and the deli meats were flavorful and sliced just thin enough that you could easily take a bite and not worry about bringing the entire cut out of the sandwich. I give this place two thumbs up for the quality of the food. Let the tourists come in because they saw it on tv - they'll get great sandwiches for a good price. At least the tourists might keep a place like this open for awhile.

Love this place! They have great lunch sandwiches and I am obsessed with the way their chicken cutlets are prepared. They also have great breakfast sandwiches, my usual is a bacon egg and cheese on a roll. And after 10 lunch sandwiches you get one free! Oh and the best is the lady that holds down the fort during lunchtime- she is the sweetest and cutest woman you'd ever meet! Instantly puts a smile on your face

I was searching for a new lunch spot near my job and I think I found it! Hello Deli is everything you want in a deli. There's a great selection, the sandwiches are delicious, and most importantly, it's super affordable. Where else in New York City can you get a quality lunch for 8 bucks? As others have said, what really sets this place apart though is the customer service. The Asian woman who works at the cash register is an absolute joy. She treats her customers like they're family, calling everyone 'sweetie pie' and reminding them to grab their munchies (chips) before they leave. I'm going to be coming to this place for years - would recommend it to anybody!

Nestled in all of the big named coffee and restaurant spots, exists this little deli. Delicious breakfast and lunch sandwiches can be had. It's so small that if you blink while walking down 53rd street, you will miss it!. Lot's of The Tonight Show tees and mugs are for sale here as well. Get a Punch card for lunch, buy 10 sandwiches and that will get you a freebie!

I really loved this place. My guy and I were walking around NYC with the intention of grabbing a quick lunch to go so we could have a picnic lunch in Central Park. With so many places to choose from and not knowing a single place, we happened upon this place and we are so glad we did! We walked in and while the shop is a bit crammed, there are lots of great sandwiches and goodies to be had! The lady behind the counter had the most amazing banter and personality we almost wished there was enough room to sit and have a chat. I didn't know the history of this place, so it was a little cool to see various things from The Late Show to purchase. We browsed the large menu and decided on two delicious sounding sandwiches: My guy went for the "Big Ass" which had turkey, pastrami, ham, american cheese, lettuce, tomato mayo and muster all on a "hero" bun. I went for the "Regis Philban" which was roast chicken, meunster cheese, lettuce tomoto and ranch dressing on a baguette. Oh holy me, these sandwiches were GREAT! We also grabbed two bags of crisps and some sodas paid and were on our way. The lady working was so friendly and the service was so quick, we vowed we would be back during our trip if not in the future and we'll stick by that promise! This place is really great and it deserves loads of business!!
