"At Hemlock, a Boise fine-dining steakhouse, I experienced the 'Baked Idaho,' a riff on baked Alaska that features a layer of huckleberry cake and Idaho potato chips folded into vanilla ice cream." - Julekha Dash

Why Are Restaurants So Dark? | Bon Appétit

"A Boise steakhouse that intentionally controls daylight and interior light to preserve a sultry, escapist mood — employing tinted windows to limit sunlight and offering light-up magnifying cards so diners can read menus comfortably. The restaurant group’s leadership says they carefully design and manage every aspect of lighting to create the desired atmosphere." - ByMaggie Hennessy

10/10 will eat here again. My wife and I flew to Boisie from Phoenix just to come to this restaurant for our anniversary. It had popped up on social media for me a few times and looked like a great experience. They did not disappoint. Service: I booked a reservation for our anniversary. When we arrived our table was ready along with a custom printed menu saying happy anniversary and the date. Great way to kick things off. Table side service was prompt, incredibly friends, and not over barring. Food: you 100% get what you pay for. The steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned, no need for salt or sauces. The baked potato for 2 stole the night. Great presentation and fun experience. Atmosphere: dark and eloquent. It was not too loud, even for a full restaurant.

I was excited about trying this place out and it was unique. We got the bread service 5/10, French onion soup 9/10, ribeye 10/10, and broccolini and carrots 7/10. The bread was a huge miss for us. It came out pretty dry and the insides were cold. The presentation was unique but it was just a miss. However, French onion soups was delicious but a tad too salty. Ribeye was amazing but the flavor combinations for the broccolini and carrots were strange and had some Hispanic flare to them which was strange for an American restaurant. They were good but they didn’t necessarily blend well. Overall it was an amazing environment and service was top notch but it was extremely expensive and some of the flavors were off.

Our server Cameron was amazing! She was so nice and knew the menu very well. The restaurant is definitely not super fancy like I was expecting with the menu pricing. We’re from Dallas so I think I was expecting more but it was nice for Boise. The filet mignon was perfect melted in your mouth, don’t waste any time on any other steak! The lobster tail was very disappointing. They said it was a “Caribbean” lobster tail after I had sent it back because it was very tough. They made me feel like I was stupid for not knowing where the lobster tail came from and as if my pallet wasn’t good enough since I’m used to a “Maine” lobster, when nothing on the menu specifically says where the lobster tail comes from. So if you’re expecting a juicy and flavorful lobster tail skip over this $40 one. It was dry and tough, I split it in half and ate the inside where I didn’t have to over chew. I guess they need to specify what a Caribbean lobster tail is and that the outside of it will be dry and tough, making you feel like it still has some sort of shell on it. The mocktail I had on the other hand, was amazing and can imagine their other cocktails would be quite delicious! The table side baked potato is 10/10 and what makes the whole experience worth it.

We had been meaning to try Hemlock, the newest steakhouse in downtown Boise that took over the former Richard’s space in Hotel 500. It is the latest concept from the team behind one of our favorite taco spots, Spitfire in Eagle. Parking downtown can be a bit tricky, but Hemlock does have valet service available out front. We stopped in for happy hour and grabbed a high-top in the bar. The atmosphere is stylish, with high-end finishes that feel elevated without being pretentious. The chairs, tables, and overall décor all make a great impression. For food, we started with the deviled eggs topped with pork belly, which were perfectly done and a standout bite. Next we split the burger and fries. The burger is a classic flat-top style, made from the prime steak trimmings, and you can really tell. Their house-made burger sauce was an instant hit with both of us. Even though that was plenty of food, I could not resist trying the “1000 layer potato.” Imagine the buttery flakiness of a croissant, but made from thinly layered potatoes. Absolutely divine. Happy hour prices were excellent and the service was outstanding from start to finish. Hemlock is an impressive addition to Boise dining and one we will be returning to many times over. Highly recommended.

An amazing experience! Oh, and our menus had our family name printed on them, nice touch! The food was exquisitely prepared and was absolutely delicious. Plenty of steak options and sauce options. Side dishes were amazing and the table-side baked potato bar is a must. Be sure to be familiar with menu prices before coming. Parking is OK in the hotel parking garage BTW.

Where do I start? Ok, we arrived early ahead of our reservation for our anniversary because we wanted to feel out this place. We were seated at the bar and was served by one of the best bar tenders ever. Kai (sorry if I spelled that wrong) was a blast, and made the best drinks! He definitely knew what he was doing, and even modified a drink for me that turned out spot on! We finally sat for dinner and what an experience! Cameron our server was very knowledgeable, and great to interact with! Spencer aka the "spud stud" was great to interact with while he made one of the best and largest baked potatoes I've ever had! The cart full of toppings is amazing! The food is very pricey, but it's the best steak I've ever had! It is the only place I've seen offer a steak flight! Yes we spent a lot of money in there, but the experience was second to none! Food and drinks are top notch! Forget the diet when going to this place!

Google
This place is an experience. Service was great. They went above and beyond making sure our needs were met and that we were taken care of. The steaks were phenomenal. Melt in your mouth. The butters and sauces we ordered added another layer of flavor. Baked potato was on another level. Can't edit to go again.

Google
This was my first time to Idaho, and this restaurant did not disappoint. Service, food, and atmosphere were all top notch, not to mention the beautiful specialty cocktails. I did not order the potato bar, but after seeing the presentation at the next table, it's on my things-to-do list for the next trip. Also, our menu had our name printed on the top. Love the attention to detail.

Yelp
The food, service and ambiance were top notch! We sat in the bar for happy hour! I'm pretty sure that was the best burger and fries I've ever had! We also had the meatballs and they were equally as delicious! Our server Walker was so nice and very attentive. It was a ten star experience for us. We also had delightful wine by the glass

Yelp
My husband and I just had an amazing dinner at Hemlock in downtown Boise. Everything from the drinks to the atmosphere to the service felt elevated and memorable. I ordered the Smurf Turf Margarita, and it was outstanding. It had the perfect spicy kick and was made with roasted jalapeño agave that gave it a deep, smoky heat. I could still feel the spice on my lips hours later in the best possible way. My husband ordered the Hemlock Old Fashioned that came with an orange peel and a steak burnt end for a garnish. It was so good that we both had to order a second round. We started with the oysters that were so fresh and delicious we almost asked for more, but we wanted to save room because we knew what was coming next. The tableside baked potato bar was the highlight of the night. The Potato Princess herself, Malory Martinez, created a full performance at our table. She brought out a giant potato that was already over a pound, scooped out the inside, and mixed it with lobster butter, lardons, five cheeses, and red onion. She topped it with cheddar and torched it right in front of us with a small blowtorch. She finished it with house-made potato chips tossed in truffle oil and added a very generous serving of sour cream on the side. Once all the toppings were added, this potato easily weighed more than three pounds. It was rich, decadent, and absolutely unforgettable. For our entrees, I had the filet mignon with bacon hollandaise, truffle sauce, and crispy shallot. My husband had the 16 ounce ribeye. We also ordered the mushroom side. Both steaks were cooked perfectly and everything was full of flavor. One of the most thoughtful touches of the night was the personalized menu. Since we booked through OpenTable, our last name was printed on the menu. They will also add special occasions if you note them in your reservation. At the end of the meal, they roll up your personalized menu into a scroll tied with string so you can take it home. It is such a unique and charming detail. Hemlock is definitely on the pricier side, but the entire experience is absolutely worth it. The ambiance is hip, modern, and swanky, and the service was exceptional from start to finish. This was a special treat and a fantastic night out. I highly recommend Hemlock for a celebration, a date night, or any time you want an unforgettable dining experience.

Yelp
Amazing steaks, excellent quality! Service was awesome - kudos to June our server for making our first experience wonderful If I could change anything it would be the piano music they, kept playing the same melody over & over. It's great for the bar area, but not for dining.

Yelp
If you don't know, Hemlock, on the ground level of the Inn at 500 (hotel), took over Richard's a few months back. They did a redesign on the space and the menu, as they're a high-end steakhouse, and although it's their focus...it's not all they do. We stayed at the Inn at 500 this week, and made reservations for Hemlock for one of our nights there. It's a classy. place, but there isn't a dress code, so don't worry too much about what you're wearing. The ambience is warm and relaxing, low-lighting, dark wood tones, privacy between tables. It's quite lovely, and I inadvertently fell in love with a flamingo lamp with feathers in the corner of one of the booths. I will find a look alike....I have to! There's a combination of things that make this place outrageously wonderful, but food and service are at the top of that list. I can't tell you how many different people checked on us while we were there. Our glasses were always full or replaced, they offered recommendations and tips, and they were all incredibly respectful and kind, even when my husband was throwing out ridiculous jokes. Oh, and get this....the name of your party will be on your menu, welcoming you to Hemlock. Most people never notice, according the our server, but I did, and I thought it was such a thoughtful thing to add to the experience. Now, for the food!!! Spoiler alert: we over-ordered. There were so many delicious items on the menu, we had a hard time deciding. We started with a Grilled Caesar to share, which was lovely and the handmade dressing was delectable. For dinner, my husband went with the 8oz. PRIME Filet Mignon, I chose the Pasta - linguine, locally foraged mushrooms & pistachio mascarpone sauce - so rich and wonderful, but you better be a. mushroom fan! Aaaaand, we also ordered the "1000 Layer Duck Fat Potatoes". These are not baked potatoes, nor are they French fries....they are something very different that I'm not going to share because it's something you need to experience on your own. Don't get any sauce with it. Just eat it as is. Trust me on this.

Yelp
I was in town to help out at a Yelp Elite Event and stayed at the Inn where this restaurant is located. I was about to walk down the street to find something to eat before our event, when I heard the hustle and bustle of what sounded like a happy hour coming from Hemlock (which is located just off the lobby). So, of course, I had to check it out! This place was SO much fun! I quickly found a seat at the bar, ordered a dirty house martini (with bonus foam), and a plate of their over-the-top delicious steak bites. It was all so good. What put this spot on the 5-star list for me, though, was the incredible, fast, and super friendly service from my bartender. Not to mention, the casual-yet-elevated decor. Apparently this gem was recently renovated and rebranded, and let's just say they are on point on all levels. My only regret is I was in town for just one night, so I couldn't enjoy happy hour all over again the next day!

Yelp
We arrived for happy hour around 5pm on a Saturday and they were very busy. We put our name in and waited in the lobby of the hotel where they allowed us to purchase appetizers and drinks while we waited, which is such fantastic thing to offer while you wait for your table. Around 5:20pm we were sat and shortly after put in our dinner order. We were sharing the happy hour burger and fries and that arrived rather quickly yet we still had not received our meatball appetizer. We asked a few times about it and were told the kitchen is really backed up on their meatballs. It took about 50-60 minutes to finally get those. Since we were splitting the burger they actually cut it in half and divided it on two separate plates for us which was so sweet. The fries are fabulous! Hot, crispy, and packed full of flavor. The burger was Delicious too! Be prepared it is a messy burger but worth all the mess! The Hemlock burger sauce is delightful and the bun was fresh! Meatballs were just mediocre in my opinion. There was just a little too much salt sprinkled on them and after eating that amazing burger I wasn't throughly impressed with the meatballs. The waitstaff while we waited in the lobby was amazing as well as at our table. They were both just so kind and upbeat that it was refreshing when they stopped by to check on us. The manager did come over and speak with us about the extremely long wait on the meatballs and took the meatballs off our tab for the inconvenience. We were mulling over if it was worth it to come back but with the manager coming by to speak to us, the kind waitstaff, and the outstanding burger and fries, it swayed us to decide we would be back in the future!! The ambience is great for a girls night or a date night. It is a bit loud on a Saturday but not too loud where you cannot hear your dinner party across the table. It's a cute place to check out!

Yelp
My review is 4.5 stars.! Great service really excellent Not snooty just warm and friendly. The bread service is good if you love butter! We tried it our first time and checked that off, we will skip in future visits. I had a filet med rare and it was better than Chandlers. I will try again next visit and hopefully it will be the same. My husband had the halibut and it was excellent also. Love the potatoes and broccoli rabe. Drinks were fine. We didn't try any speciality ones.

Yelp
The place was nice and the service was pretty good. The duck fat potatoes were probably the best thing ever. The steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned . The baked potatoes bet was a neat experience but it probably would feed more like 4 people not two...

Yelp
We visited for Thanksgiving. Our first experience but not our last. Welcomed by hostess and treated as royalty. Food above expectations. Great romantic atmosphere. My new Boise favorite.

Yelp
OVERPRICED - MEDIOCRE FOOD - MEDIOCRE DINING EXPERIENCE Everywhere I would go before Hemlock: Chandler's, Ruth's Chris, Indian Creek, even Sizzler. Expect to spend $250-$300 for dinner for two. For that price, you'd think you'd get more than just nickel-and-dimed from start to finish. It was mediocre across the board. The steak shows up solo on a plain white plate -- no sides, no garnish, no seasoning. Just a dry, overcooked fillet mignon. The bread felt like a grocery store roll sitting in melted butter. Only thing that stood out was the tomato bisque -- solid, but it's tomato soup. We waited two months for this reservation and got seated next to the kitchen entrance. If we walked in, sure. But with a reservation? Come on. Drinks came out sticky, water never refilled, plates sat forever. Plenty of staff around, but somehow no one noticed the table. Either lower your prices or raise your standards -- this place is way off the mark.
google avatar

Nicole L.

Yelp
The drinks were ok, food was good. Not sure it was worth the price tag but this is one of those location location locations. You go there to be seen. So that's part of the price tag. Service was rotating so I never felt fully taken care of, but overall my experience was good. Would recommend if that is your scene.

Yelp
My family took me to Hemlock for Father's Day, and we had our brunch reservation at 12:30 PM. The menu was brunch-focused, with a few nice lunch options and several creative, upscale breakfast plates. Dishes like the fancy "French" toast with ricotta cheese and pistachios and the huckleberry pancakes definitely caught our eye. My wife and daughter has these... My son and I both ordered the Prime Rib "French" Dip, and it was outstanding. The meat was exceptionally high quality, tender, flavorful, and far better than what you might find at your average spot. This was clearly a cut above. We glanced at the cocktail list, and while it was a bit early in the day for us, the drinks sounded and looked fantastic. I'll definitely be coming back for dinner to try them out. The interior has a unique vibe with a stylish blend of retro and contemporary. The staff was very friendly, and the service was great. Heads-up: Don't ask for Ranch or Heinz, Hemlock makes their own dressings, fry sauce, and even the ketchup, which is a cool touch that fits their unique approach to everything on the menu (they did make me a "Ranch", but it mostly tasted like dill). All good. If you're looking for a meal that's out of the ordinary, Hemlock delivers. Every dish seems to come with a creative twist, and the overall experience is fresh and memorable. Recommended!

Yelp
I took my wife to Hemlock for the first time yesterday to celebrate our anniversary. I made the reservation through OpenTable and mentioned it was our anniversary. One thing that I love about the experience was that on our menu it listed a message about our anniversary and the celebration. We even got the menus sent home with us when they boxed our leftovers, which is truly a nice touch and more restaurants should do more of this. For the starters, we ordered the bread service and a couple of scallops. Both were amazing. The scallops were packed with flavor and very fresh. The bread was incredibly soft and the different choices of butter were a very nice touch. We ordered the lobster butter which paired very nicely with the bread. For our entrées, we both ordered the fillet, medium, rare with The bacon truffle, hollandaise, and crispy shallots on top. We also ordered a side of the brussels sprouts as well as the table side, baked potato. The steaks were great, and the bacon truffle topping was a very nice touch with the bacon being larger pieces as opposed to small little crumbles that most places might do our steaks were $65 each, which I think is fair, however, a bit high in comparison to their competitors. Brussels sprouts were OK nothing too great to rave about. I would've liked to see a balsamic glaze or crispier brussels sprouts. We thought they were fine but we probably wouldn't order again. As for the table side potato, this was a great experience similar to Barbacoa's table side guac or brickyards tableside salads. Hemlock picks out huge russet potatoes carve out the center put that into a mixing bowl and begin adding a ton of different toppings into the mashed potato mixture, including Brisket burnt ends, larger pieces of bacon, a ton of different cheese, options, chives, and others that you would expect a mashed potato to have. Once those all get mixed into the mashed potato mixture, they place it back in the potato skin, add cheese on top and take a torch to it to melt the cheese and give it a nice crispy finish, then to top it off they add crushed potato chips on top. Overall, this was phenomenal and worth the $40 cost. The menu states it is for two people, but realistically this could serve about four people. The service was good, a little slow, but it was packed full of people on a Monday night. Overall ambiance of the restaurant was nicer than Richard's and is a good spot for a special occasion. With all of that being said, I put this place at a four star because while it was a good experience, we felt that it was priced a bit high for what it was in comparison to the competition in the area such as Barbacoa, brickyard, chandlers.

Yelp
I had the absolute pleasure of being invited to Hemlock's pre-launch dinner in downtown Boise, and it just so happened to fall on our 3-year anniversary, which made it feel that much more aligned and special. From the moment we walked up to the glowing marquee lights and stepped into the velvet-and-leather glow of the entryway, it felt like a whole vibe...moody, elegant, and cinematic in the best way. The drinks? Next level. We started with the Capitol Martini, which came with a literal cloud of martini brine air floating on top. It was delicate, salty in a perfect way, and honestly made the whole experience feel extra. The Appaloosa Pear was one of my favorite- light, gingery, with pear and maple undertones and this subtle mint finish that made it super refreshing. Think fall meets spa water meets cocktail bar. The Mountain Bluebird was such a surprise, made with local huckleberry, lemon, and egg white. It had this smooth citrusy foam on top with a floral, almost ethereal finish that paired beautifully with the salad. And to close out the night, the Carajillo- which has espresso, Licor 43, chai tea, and maple syrup. If you love an after-dinner drink that leans rich and smoky but still has that creamy coffee finish..this is the one. That one sip was like... exhale. Let's talk food. To start, we shared the Steak Tartare, layered over crispy duck fat potatoes and topped with a quail egg. Not only was it gorgeous on the plate, but the texture contrast of the warm crunch underneath and the chilled tartare on top? Unreal. Hands down the best tartare I've had in Boise, and maybe even beyond. Next came the Wedge Salad, which I expected to be a classic but their version completely elevated it. The blue cheese dressing was dill-forward, herby, and surprisingly light. The cherry tomatoes, red onions, and thick-cut bacon brought balance without overpowering. For our main, we split the 16 oz Prime Ribeye, cooked medium rare, and topped it with their creamy, house-made Peppercorn Hemlock Steak Sauce. The meat was tender and flavorful, and that sauce added the perfect kick of warmth and richness. And the Shells & Cheese with lobster? Just indulgent. Buttery, cheesy, creamy, with lobster flavor folded throughout. It's one of those comfort food sides that are a must to indulge in! Every dish had intention behind it. Every drink had depth. And the entire space, from the dramatic lighting to the signature branding, felt like the kind of place you come back to for anniversaries, celebrations, or just when you want to feel like you're somewhere that gets it. We left full, cozy, and genuinely excited for what Hemlock is bringing to downtown Boise. And im not gonna lie, I'm still dreaming about that steak tartare!

Honest C.

Yelp
This was entirely not worth the price. At the bare minimum if I spend over $70 on a steak I expect the temp to be right, ordered medium rare, steak came out medium well/well done. It made me sad to see a slab of beef sent to hell before it hit my plate.

Yelp
5 Stars - New Ownership Nailed It! The new owners have taken this steakhouse to the next level. The food is absolutely delicious--steaks cooked to perfection and thoughtful, tasty sides. The drinks are top-notch and creative, especially the martini with olive brine foam--unique and delicious. The staff is friendly, attentive, and clearly love what they do. If you haven't been back lately, now's the time. They've crushed it!

Yelp
Very nice atmosphere and vibe. Food was quite good, though not exceptional for the price (the carrot side-dish had excellent flavor and presentation, but carrots were undercooked and hard. The New York strip was cooked properly but didn't standout for what I can get and prepare myself). May sound silly, but the serrated steak knives at the table shredded the steak more than sliced it, - again, not a dealbreaker but a small experience-detail I notice when I'm paying $70 or more for a prime cut. Our server was polite and friendly, but couldn't answer questions we had about the menu. A very nice touch was that for our anniversary they printed menus with our names on them. Definitely a good upscale happy hour that we will return for.

Yelp
I really wanted to like this restaurant. I travel to Boise a lot and stay in the hotel connected to the restaurant. The server has to give you an explanation about the menu, and it's still confusing. You can only order some items in some combinations. The food is ok - no one in my party thought anything they had was memorable. And for this price point, it should be a memorable meal. And it was loud - we were shouting at each other all night. The only good thing I can say is the service was great.

Yelp
Hemlock is one of those places that instantly makes you feel like you are somewhere special. The design is gorgeous, clean, modern, and thoughtful without trying too hard. It is the kind of space that feels both elevated and welcoming. Every dish felt carefully considered with layered flavors that were refined but not fussy. You can tell the kitchen really respects quality ingredients and knows how to let them shine. Cocktails were well balanced and beautifully presented, and I'm thinking it might be the only seed oil free restaurant in Idaho?

Yelp
Normally, I would give a play by play of what we ate, the quality of food, ambiance, service, etc. But the one thing none of the 4 of us can get over is the following: $40 FOR A BAKED POTATO?!?!! Our meal could have been Michelin 5 Star quality (it wasn't). But charging $40 for a baked potato IN IDAHO is equivalent to charging $25 for Shaved Ice in Hawaii!!! Never again.
google avatar

Yelp
Hemlock was absolutely fantastic, so much so that I had to return the next day to try more on the menu, went with a couple friends and ordered four different steaks so we could sample them all and it was amazing. The creativity in both the food and bar menu leaves you constantly wanting to try more although I did have to order the mashed potato cart both times... "when in Rome!". The staff couldn't have been friendlier or more accommodating. Can't wait to return. Five stars.

Craig B.

Yelp
Great food service and atmosphere in a comfortable upscale restaurant Great addition to Boise dining scene

Yelp
WHY!!!!!! Why would you take off the fish and chips!!!!!! We have come three times and just for this! It was so good! The tartar sauce was the best I've ever had! The fish - chefs kiss! Who wants a breakfast burrito!!! Lame! Bring back the fish! This would have been 5 stars otherwise! So sad.

Ron C.

Yelp
WOW... Ive experienced a few great restaurants all over the nation. I was pleasantly surprised to find a hidden gem in Boise. We started with the brontosaurus bone appetizer, had a stuffed steak and truffle salt potato, followed by the 40 oz porterhouse steak. We topped it off with the decadent sticky toffee pudding!! As a foody connoisseur, I highly recommend the experience!!

Amber M.

Yelp
I visited Hemlock the first week it opened. I was thoroughly impressed with the service and the structure of how the evening went. Despite being new and dealing with all the things that come from opening a new restaurant, they had a smile on their face and their presentation was on point! The food was spectacular. Some of my favorites were the wedge salad with their homemade blue cheese dressing, the ribeye was phenomenal and cooked to perfection. Now let's talk about their sides; yes, the rolling baked potato bar is a little pricey but hello we leave in Idaho and they got their hands on some of the biggest potatoes I've ever seen. Worth every cent for the flavor and experience. The corn, the mushrooms and sprouts were also delicious. Ambience and the decor was like nothing I've ever seen before. Cool tones great music. A very modern boho touch. The lights were on point. If only the interior decorator could come decorate my house that would be amazing.

Yelp
Outstanding new restaurant in Boise! It is great to have another fine dining option in town. Fun vibe not easily found in Boise. Love the potato bar.

Yelp
Hemlock has it! Burnt end Old Fashioned. and .... And .... And ....!!!!!! Stay tuned. Every Drink is innovative and amazing!!

Olivia B.

Yelp
Everything here was amazing, the food, the staff, the ambiance, the drinks. Well worth the price. They made us feel so special, I definitely recommend this place! Didn't get a picture of the steaks but here's one of the (must do) table side baked potato and potato gelato!

David A. R.

Yelp
Bottom line upfront: the best steak in Boise! The ambience and service were on the mark and extra special.

Hunter B.

Yelp
Food and drinks are expensive for what they are. This is likely the most expensive restaurant in Boise. I think the worst part of my experience is the bartender lighting wood on fire in the bar area to make a cocktail. The entire place smelled like smoke and made my allergies go nuts.

Yelp
A SEED OIL FREE RESTAURANT IN BOISE??? Sign me up!!!! This restaurant is an EXPERIENCE not to be missed ... the service, food, and ambiance are incredible. I ordered the ribeye and my husband got the new york ... and then we also got the baked potato for two which is SO GOOD!!! Highly recommend!

Yelp
Food was good, but overpriced. Service has the look and feel of high end, but in back to back evenings, disappointed both times.

Yelp
I had the pleasure of trying out Hemlock at their grand opening and oh my freakin gosh...I cannot express how good their dang steak is. I don't know if people still use the term "grip" when using it as the word "multiple," but I ended up joining a grip if awesome people who all wanted to try a grip of different items. First off, The Hemlock cocktail is freakin ON POINT! I tried two of their other signature drinks which were very good, but I kept going back to The Hemlock because it was just terrific. Then we split several different entrees, like something lobster-related, the tableside potato bar thing, and a few different cuts of steak. I cannot even express to you how good the steak is. Seriously, I have never ever had a better steak in my lifetime, and I am a certified omnivore who LOVES a good steak. But whether this was the cut, the quality, the freshness, or however it was prepared, I could literally eat that all day every day and be happy. I'd probably develop extreme coronary problems pretty quickly, but I'd be happy. I will be back here and work on those coronary problems because I NEED that steak again!

Yelp
While I was hopeful that this recently opened cool vibe restaurant would be a new favorite, unfortunately, it was a complete letdown. The menu and the food photos that accompanied on the website looked pretty darn amazing, but let me tell you the complete disappointment when served our food. Meat thrown on white plates with no presentation, especially for the price point of the menu. The fact that it was 65.00 for a filet mignon with NO sides, is absolutely insane. I can go to Chandlers and pay 48.00 for a properly cooked filet and two sides, with beautiful presentation. Not only that, but the filet was overcooked (we requested medium) and when we sent it back, they burnt the outside and left the inside raw for a second try on a medium cook request. They asked if we wanted to take it with us and we said since we paid for it yes and will just cook it at home, then didn't even send it with us. The server said well I guess you could feed it to your dog. That tells you what the servers even think of the food. They tossed it and so we paid 65.00 for a filet we didn't even get to eat. There was not even an apology or how can we make this better for the lackluster experience. The mashed potatoes were a disgusting slop mess that looked like a bowl full of melted butter and was stringy. Another issue was the service - there were SO many people working that literally every two minutes we had someone clearing our table, taking things we asked them to leave and making us feel rushed. We asked to keep the hot tray of butter from bread service to dip our steaks. We had 5 servers in 5 minutes come to try and take it. Someone finally took it and then put our butter in ramekan dish, which made the butter hard, therefore not edible. What does that tell me? You don't have enough dishes that you have to rush people out and we were unable to enjoy our experience because we were constantly interrupted. During our 1.5 hour time there, we had over 20 check-ins from multiple people. Because of this lackluster experience, I am making sure to let everyone know not to spend their money here and to go somewhere else in town where you can spend less and receive a much better, and higher quality experience.

Yelp
I was very excited to try this place out. Hardly do I ever get to a new place soon after it opens. Let's just address the potato in the room. $40 for a freaking potato?? It says on the menu $20 for a for as table side potato for two. They apparently mean per person. False advertising if you ask me. Then I made the mistake of saying yes to truffle shavings on my potato. That cost me another $40 for 4 1/2 paper thin shavings. $80 potato yes an $80 potato, singular potato picture included. The rolls in melted butter $9 They are good but you need to know that your going to leave this place 5 sticks of butter heavier. The skirt steak and New York were tasty and buttery. The drinks were slooow to get to us. The rolls came out then the potato and then everything else super fast. The ambience is loud. Super loud to the point I couldn't hear the waitstaff and barely my spouse right next to me. I am going to give this a big Boise no thanks,,,,,$80 potato

Yelp
Very disappointed. Thought we would try their happy hour before splurging on a full blown dinner. Glad we did as now we will have our special dinner at one of the proven upscale steak restaurants in Boise. Our drinks were fine - no complaints. The ambiance is pleasant and the service was attentive. From that point things went down hill fast. We ordered the truffled potato chips. Kind of expected some house made chips but these were just chips out of a bag with a little truffle salt sprinkled on. Apparently ours came from the bottom of the bag as we got crumbs, not chips. The halloumi cheese was unedible. Typically crispy on the outside and creamy in the middle, this was dry, chewy and way too salty. A total disaster. The meatballs needed a crostini or something. Three small meatballs with a dipping sauce was disappointing. The steak skewers were the best app that we ordered but did not offset or overall disappointment. Too many other great options in town to give Hemlock a second chance.

Yelp
Story time... Our experience at Hemlock on June 23rd was extremely disappointing from start to finish. My sister initially contacted the restaurant to make a reservation for a party of 14 to celebrate three birthdays. She was told the event coordinator would reach out due to the party size. When they connected, my sister was informed that we would need to do a pre-fixe menu in the private dining room. She declined, stating we preferred to split the tables to avoid the pre-set menu, and the conversation ended with that understanding. On the day of the dinner, I called the restaurant at 5:23 PM to confirm the reservation for 6 PM, since we had not received any follow-up. The hostess was unable to locate a reservation under our name or phone number. She mentioned it was a Monday and offered to book us on the spot, asking if we could adjust to 6:15 or 6:30 PM. We agreed to 6:30. Shortly after that call, the manager on duty, reached out to my sister to say there had been a misunderstanding. He stated the private room was available and assured us they would set it up for our party, asking us to bear with them. When we arrived, most of our party was already at the bar since we had initially expected to be seated at 6 PM. The hostess attempted to seat us at two separate tables. We explained that the manager on duty had just confirmed we would be in the private dining room. We all waited near the host stand while they attempted to sort it out, but ultimately, we were seated at the two separate tables--something we had agreed to in the first place just to avoid the pre-fixe menu, so that part was acceptable. Unfortunately, the service from that point on was severely lacking. It took 15 minutes for our server to greet us and take drink orders. Champagne was brought to the tables as a gesture, which we appreciated, but we then waited another 30 minutes for the drinks to arrive. One of the birthday guests didn't receive her martini until nearly 8 PM--well over an hour after being seated--only after my husband personally went up to the bar to ask about it. To make matters worse, the other table received their food well before ours, despite us being part of the same party. Our entrées and sides finally arrived at 8:34 PM. At that point, I had lost my appetite and only ate a few bites. While I was briefly away from the table, my silverware was cleared and not replaced; I had to ask for a new set. The carrots served with the meal were undercooked. When we brought it to the server's attention, she responded that they are served al dente and many guests have made the same comment--something that should be communicated upfront when ordering. After dinner, a birthday dessert was brought out as a kind gesture, but it consisted of melted ice cream served in a bowl with just one spoon. When we expressed concern, the server said she could bring more spoons "if we wanted to share." We were handed the manager's card and the manager on duty that night's cell phone number. My husband asked if he was still present to speak with him directly, and we were told yes, so we attempted to contact him. When we eventually did see him, I asked why one table received their food significantly earlier than the other, if we were meant to be treated as one party. His answer about steak cook times didn't explain the disjointed service. My husband asked why nothing had been done to accommodate us beyond the champagne, especially for the guests who don't drink. The manager asked for our contact information to "make it right," but by then it was already 9:40 PM and we had paid. The entire dinner took nearly four hours, which is simply unacceptable for a group that had a confirmed reservation and straightforward expectations. To be clear, the personalized menus were a nice touch, and I'm glad to hear that the other table had a good meal. My sister had a wonderful time, and we're happy for her. But Hemlock should have treated everyone in the party with the same level of service and respect. This was one of the worst dining experiences we've had.

Yelp
We loved everything about Hemlock. The decor, service, cocktails, and food were all fantastic! We started with the bread (amazing) and steak tartar. The tartar was out of this world! I got the 16oz ribeye, which was perfectly cooked and just the right about of fat. We also had the table side baked potato, which was a show by itself and finished off with classic potato chips! We had the corn crème brûlées, which just melts in your mouth. Overall, we can't wait to go back and try some of the other dishes in the menu.

Yelp
Best restaurant in Boise and maybe the best restaurant I have ever been to. We loved everything we tried. Presentation and taste were fantastic. Great decor and service.

Yelp
lol this place is way overpriced for what you get. Surprised you don't have to pay for fork and knife. Just say NO ... don't go

Yelp
One of the best steakhouses I've ever been to! Great service as well. This was our second visit and we'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Beautiful interior and food to match! Such a bonus that they are seed oil free! Cocktails were also great you can tell they put care into designing their menu.

Yelp
My husband and I came to share some appetizers and drinks: we got the grilled ceasar which had a phenomenal house made dressing that blew us away. We got the shrimp cocktail which also had a house made cocktail sauce that was top notch, and the prawns were massive and so juicy. Then we had the beef tartare on duck fat potatoes and wow. Stunning. The fact that it was all seed oil free was just a cherry on top! Cocktail menu was so well done, it was an experience within itself and the cocktail was perfect. It was a busy night and they were out of desserts, so a manager offered complimentary night caps or a dessert if we came back tomorrow before leaving town which was so unnecessary but appreciated! We had such a good experience we came back the next day for their "Boise's Best Burger" and tallow fries. It was easily the best smash burger we've ever had and the fries were SO crispy and tasty. The manager found us after our meal and begged us to try a dessert on them, it was so sweet and made our day getting to try the baked Idaho!! The servers were so sweet and helpful both times, making great recommendations and making us feel at home. We are already planning our trip back!!

Yelp
My steak was burnt on the outside on raw on the inside. Server wasn't very helpful or informative. Drinks were excellent. High cost meal, not worth it.

Yelp
77 decibels at our table made it nearly impossible to engage our guests in conversation. Service was quite slow. Our entries arrived 10 minutes before the side dishes, both of which had been ordered incorrectly. The manager gave us gift cards to lighten our mood but neither the meal nor the experience were worth the high price. Will not be returning.

Yelp
Unlike previous reviewers I was not overly impressed. The one word that came to mind was pretentious.....followed quickly by overpriced. We arrived a little early for our reservation and were invited to wait in the bar. Bartender was wonderful. Drink was great. Manager showed up after a while and informed us our table wasn't ready and offered to seat us at the bar for dinner and to pay for our round of drinks. The bar was loud and not the atmosphere we were looking for so we said we'd wait. Eventually we were seated. Our drinks were not comped. The table was right at the entrance and really sucked. Very loud with bright setting sun in my face and a lot of traffic. Ordered the bread service which is 4 rolls served to you in a pool of melted butter. I ate about a quarter of one. Do not recommend. Ordered steaks and the table side potato. For $40 I expect the potato to be pretty fabulous. It was just a potato. It came well before the steaks so was cold by the time the food came. I'd suggest working on that. Yes. We were told that the timing might be off but it still doesn't work. My Denver steak was overcooked as was my friend's ribeye. Very flavorful but still overcooked. Too nice of a piece of meat to send back plus we didn't want to wait. The highlight of the evening was when the bill arrived and there was a $75 charge for a gift card that we didn't order. The manager had added it to our bill. Wtf? How many times does that happen and people miss it? Their POS system is weird in how it breaks bills out and is very confusing. The server apologized for it but it didn't sit well and hit me as sneaky. We did get personalized menus which is amusing. What am I supposed to do with that after dinner? Just get some real menus and maybe charge a little less for the food? Not a do over.

Yelp
New restaurant and wished to try. We found it disappointing with mediocre food and drinks. The place is noisy with loud background music and mostly a bar scene. The prices are likely the highest in Boise and the food was not well presented or prepared. The steaks are served with no sauce or sides. Our mushroom side was not good and seemed to have small pieces of bread included. Would not recommend and will not return. If you wish to have a conversation or discussion this is definitely not the place for you.
