Barrel-Aged Beer Will Be King at Newly Opened HenHouse Palace of Barrels | Eater SF

"I saw that HenHouse has opened a palatial Petaluma taproom and barrel-aging facility called the Palace of Barrels at 1333 N. McDowell in the former Petaluma Hills Brewing space; it opened over the weekend, seats 42, and will largely pour the same beers as the Santa Rosa tasting room until they start getting beers out of barrels (probably in about a year). Co-founder Collin McDonnell says they’ll start filling barrels immediately with the goal of producing spirits-aged and funky beers down the road, food trucks are on the way, and hours are 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 11 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday." - Caleb Pershan

My wife and I stumbled upon Henhouse while on vacation. We were traveling back to San Francisco after a day in Sonoma. Wow! We got lucky! The vibe was amazing and the beer was fantastic. Really, any brewery beer will typically do the job, it’s the people which make the experience. The people here made the experience perfect. If you are in the area, this is the place to stop. It is very pet friendly but not annoying if you are not an animal person. Salute!

We are so grateful to HenHouse Brewing for their generosity in donating beer for our fundraiser to help save dogs in Contra Costa County. Their support helped make our event a huge success, and the beer itself? Absolutely phenomenal. What makes HenHouse beer so special is how it’s made: always fresh, unfiltered, and unpasteurized. Brewed in small batches with an eye toward quality and creativity, each flavor bursts with vibrant hop character and balance. HenHouse has built a reputation for brewing with intention—showcasing the artistry of hops while keeping drinkability front and center. I agree. DELISH. Our guests loved the lineup and I borrow this writing from online descriptions: - Hollow Moon IPA – Bursts with tropical guava and piña colada notes from Mosaic and Sabro hops, perfectly balanced. - Frozen Envelope IPA – A hazy, juicy treat, dripping with orange, pineapple, guava, and grapefruit. It looked like a creamsicle in a can and tasted even better. - Big Chicken Double IPA – Bold and brimming with hops (Mosaic, Simcoe, Amarillo, and more), this is HenHouse at its hop-forward best. Best Life Blonde Ale – Smooth, crisp, and lightly hoppy, the perfect can to crack open any time. And great graphics! Not only were the beers a hit, but HenHouse’s generosity and community spirit shone through. They did not just donate—they partnered with us in creating a fun, memorable experience, and I'm confident they got alot of fans post-event. Simply put, HenHouse Brewing represents the best of Northern California craft beer: inventive, community-minded, and always brewed with passion and care. Plus their graphics are so fun! We can’t thank them enough!

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for the generous donation of your lip-smacking beer to the Citizens for Rescue Fundraiser on February 23, 2025. Your beer was a huge hit and brought a lot of joy to our event. Your support means the world to use and we’re so thankful to have you as part of our community. Thank you again for your kindness and for helping make our fundraiser a success.

Staff is friendly and informative, trained well. A chill vibe and pleasant. Nice to visit and enjoy a brew. They play homage to humanity’s friend, Kuano—see uploaded image plus there’s a beer there too.

Google
The beers are delicious. You can’t do much better especially as IPA fans. The service was attentive and friendly. They have a tv for sports and met w rep (Ashlyn) who said they just opened a fair fax location with food and drinks. Will definitely check that out next time.

Great place to relax with a few beers. Dogs allowed as well which is nice. They even had the whole place decorated for Halloween and it was really cool!

Yelp
HenHouse is a regional popular brewery, and the Petaluma location is right across the street from Lagunitas so it's an easy visit. This ended up being one of my top brewery visits on my entire trip, because of the staff, other customers, and excellent quality beer. This is their barrel house; they had outdoor seating, lots of tables, bar seating, and a separate private event space. The merchandise area is a little alcove near the door. I sat at the bar and had a flight, there were so many favorite styles on tap that I tried to have a nice selection of different ones. Due to how the evening progressed I ended up trying almost every beer on tap that night. On my visit it was trivia night, so I jumped on a team and made some friends. We ended up winning first place, they insisted I take the gift card prize and even bought me a case of IPA on the way out! I also had a quesadilla, maybe the best ever, from the pop up tent outside that evening. Prices were excellent of everything for the quality! If you're a beer fan in Petaluma, this is arguably the best brewery in town!

Yelp
Always a 10 five stars staff brews and ambiance always top notch! Live music today! Outstanding avian surveillance IPA and mattress mafia hazy. Our bartender was super cool

Yelp
We were staying at the Petaluma Home 2 Suites by Hilton which was a couple of blocks away from this brewery. Driving by the front outdoor patio, Hen House Brewing Company looked inviting and lively. It was definitely worth checking out. We came in on a late Saturday afternoon. Parking was easy and accessible both on the streets and their parking lot. The brewery is located in a nice business area across from Lagunitas Brewery and close to the freeway. We ordered an IPA, Seltzer, a couple of root beers and a strawberry lemonade. Everything was refreshing and crisp. The staff and fellow customers were all friendly and upbeat. There was a live band performing in the patio which was cool. Both the various hen portraits hanging on the walls and the large hen mural was awesome. Overall we enjoyed our experience at Hen House Brewery. It's definitely a great spot to hang out at and enjoy some beer.

Yelp
Just hanging at the first ever Chicken fest. Got our hands on the 2025 big chicken. The day had a whole lot of vendors and food truck in the back. The beer is always on point and has whatever type you want

Yelp
HenHouse brewing is fun! Great service , cool crowd and fun ambiance. There is a food truck outside for the hangry! Love the HenHouse logo! Highly recommend the Grove People DIPA and Virtuoso. Cheers!

Yelp
Beer and Selzer were great. We came expecting food "in house". We were surprised by the food truck on site. Plan accordingly. Nice vibe. Easy street parking.

Yelp
We have travelled into breweries throughout the country. This is in the top 10 for sure. Everyone is so friendly and the beer is good. They have a nice well rounded selection. The porter and the stout hit the spot.

Yelp
Stopped by for a beer on our way home. Open, airy place with a friendly and attentive staff. The draft beer is good, I had a very tasty and quite potent red ale and hubby had a delicious crisp lager. Must be hard to compete with Lagunitas Brewery across the street.

Yelp
July 2023 So we stopped by to bring friends from out of town on a small beer trip. Guys at the front are still really helpful with questions we had, especially for those who've never been. I hadn't been here since before COVID hit, but the outdoor seating that they put in around the side of the building is really nice. The beer selection revolves with their releases and we found a couple easy drinkers to enjoy with the nice weather outside.

Yelp
THE GOOD ° If you're looking to enjoy a spot for Halloween, this is definitely a place to go! - So many decorations! ° All the beers are pretty rememberable. - We had to take a bottle of Witchcraft & The Occult home with us. °The singing heads in the bathroom were great. Creeped my sons out, but in a funny way. THE BAD ° I'd personally prefer the staff to write down the names for the flight. - Writing long names in a small-ish box with a medium tip sharpie just ain't it. (But really this is small and just feedback to improve process).

Yelp
Ever since they messed up and now have all their beers made at Gordon Birch the flavor is just not there in their beer. I would rather go to original pattern, Ghost Town, old Caz or many other places. The beer taste very watered down now very sad at this used to be my favorite place.

Yelp
I do love a good brewery and we stop at many of them on our road trips and this one is definitely one you should not pass up. We showed up in the early afternoon on a Tuesday and there was a good flow of people coming and going. We bellied up to the bar and were greeted right away. We ordered a flight and when she returned with the six pours of beers she took the time to explain each one. Our beer tender was very personable and very knowledgeable about the beer. All of the beers were fantastic and we loved the design of the building and the way it was decorated.

Yelp
Some really nice beers. Just across the street from the Lagunitas Beer Sanctuary. Food was bar snacks only. Fantastic service. Quality merch. Well worth a stop if in the area.

Yelp
Service: We ordered our beers, , and sat outside. The brewery was playing rap music, and we kept hearing other patrons complaining. I spoke with a server and asked him politely to change the music, look at your cliental and play accordingly. He turned around, never spoke and walked away?? He changed the music, 70's soft rock, ok!! He also turned up the volume considerably, are you telling me something? It's called rude, come on HenHouse you can do better!!
google avatar

Magz B.

Yelp
Perfect place for a beer! The driveway sneaks up on you but there's plenty of seating inside and out to enjoy a cold one. Staff was so welcoming and passionate about their brew. 23 Dec Food Truck: The Spot

Yelp
Henhouse is a great place to just hang out and drink some beer. They don't have a kitchen but they do have a food truck that comes for a certain time. Only beer here, no ciders. If you follow my reviews you already know I am not a big beer drinker but best life was delicious, light and refreshing. Hubby got the tasting flight and some were harsh while others weren't bad. Lots of varying flavors on tap. The bar tenders are very knowledgeable and make great recommendations. There are no servers so you seat yourself, order your beer at the register and bring it to your table, and clean up after yourself.

Yelp
Everything about this place is incredible. The vibe, the beer, the service! When we are in Petaluma it's our go-to. Doesn't disappoint like other breweries in the area.

Yelp
I love this place!! As I drove by yesterday, the seasonal decorations kind of drew me in. I never had tasted their brew before and I was absolutely amazed at how good!!! to make it better there's the best taco truck on the premises and it was so good delectable tacos. Just hit the spot and I'm looking for every excuse to go back there today. It left such a good taste in my mouth.!

Yelp
Good beer and ambience. Love the small brewers who brew for the love of beer. Food tent on site also has great food

Yelp
Always a great place to grab a beer when in Petaluma, Great service and great beers with plenty of seating . Super chill atmosphere and you can sit outside or inside. Interesting beers and I would recommend the flight .

Yelp
Great service. Stoped here on way back from ocean. Lagunitas was closed so I'm glad we went here instead

Yelp
Limited parking in the lot but street parking available. Great selection of beers. Friendly fast service. Super knowledgeable beertenders! Great experience and is on the short list for a return!

Yelp
Great beers. Friendly staff. I love the witchy vibe too! I wish they had appetizers.

Kevin M.

Yelp
Great tasting beer. Most knowledgeable folksy staff. I used to be all IPAs. More and more I'm loving the saisons. Trivia night is the best

Kevin F.

Yelp
Place used to be a gem and now the bartenders barely acknowledge you. Went there ordered a beer and the bartender just gave me a blank stare. Being a local with many options, henhouse isn't the spot. The morale there is awful, ownership must make it not a fun place to work.
google avatar

Yelp
If you're thinking of coming to Henhouse, don't chicken out! So TLDR, friendly folks, tasty and unique beers to drink there or take away and fun chicken themed merch. We were in town and wanted to find a brewpub where we could watch the big game. We chos Henhouse because it was small, local and the beers looked interesting and we were not disappointed. Staff were super friendly and welcoming and there were only 15, or so, people there. We tried 4 beers and each one was unique and delicious. Big Chicken was a special run, double IPA with 10% ABV, it was strangely delicate and floral despite the high alcohol. Dark saison was fruity and dark with a perfect balance and flavor. The oyster stout looked heavy but was quite drinkable and had interesting brined notes from the oysters (yes, they actually whole oysters in the brewing process). Our final selection was the pear/cranberry gose, which was almost cidery with almost no beeriness. We grabbed some food from a local Thai joint to compliment the beers. You can bring food in or get something from the food trucks which frequent the pub on a rotating schedule listed on their website.
google avatar

Emmy M.

Yelp
I live down the street and this location is super convenient. I meet friends here all the time and there's always different food trucks which we enjoy. Service is great. They check vaccine cards and IDs right now/ stamp you to sit inside so come prepared.

Yelp
We normally go to Santa Rosa Hen House which we Love so when in Petaluma you try Hen House here. As usual Amazing staff Friendly and helpful. Of course we are here for BIG CHICKHEN it does not disapoint . worth the wait 4 hops ,smooth not flowery. Maybe a Carmel forward YUM. I'm not sure what food trucks are they as we had no need for food but usually there is a good one. Good indoor and outdoor seats and Dog friendly Love that there is NO big screen TVs you can just chill ,drink beer talk yo friends.
google avatar

Marisela S.

Yelp
Our friend raved about this place, he loves breweries, loves to try new beers and he told us if we were in the area we should come here.... So we did. It was smaller than I thought, which is not a bad thing, it had a great patio area outside in the front with heaters and the inside had a couple tables and merch on the side, with a wide bar top to order at. We tried two beers, one of them was really good, the other we didn't care for, but it wasn't horrible, just not our taste. The ladies who were working were great and fun to talk to, everything was clean and overall it was a great spot to come and hang out at. I could see why people would come here after work and just have a beer or two and then head home. I did like the lighting inside too, it was very industrial looking, unique, it just had a very relaxed vibe overall.

Yelp
Ten Years and going strong! It took lots of guts, but Collin McDonnell did it! He quit his regular job and started HenHouse Brewing Company in 2009 when the economy was still in recession. Almost 10 years later the company is doing well and growing. He did get help from co-founders Scott Goyne and Shane Goepel along the way, and the partnership has been a fruitful one. The last time I checked the HenHouse had two tasing room locations, one here and the other in San Rosa. I have not been to the Santa Rosa location, but if I am not mistaken it is the older of the two. If you are visiting, try to get a seat at the bar and take your time reading the menu before making a pick! If doubtful the Beeristas (is there such a word?!!) are usually very helpful and knowledgeable. Id despite all the efforts you are still undecided, order the sampler. This flight of six will surely help you decide! I, myself, enjoyed the IPA, but enjoyed most of the other beers that I sipped and tasted. Some days, there is a little makeshift food boot out front. The vendors change, and during the last visit it was Japanese food was being served and it went well with our beer!

Melissa D.

Yelp
My husband really liked two of the beers and the rest were still really solid. The dubbel and the hazy pale were his favorites but he also really liked the blonde. The IPA's were ok but more importantly, nothing was bad. The space is really cool with an outdoor patio and food truck. So far, this has been our favorite brewery in the area.

Yelp
Casually driving through Petaluma I had originally planned to visit Laganitas Brew Co. but they were closed. Without doing any further research I came across Henhouse Brew Co. which was conveniently located across the street from its competitor. From the moment of arrival it had already cross checked two of my pre-requisite. Henhouse Brew Co. is pet friendly and they have pretty good selection of IPA on tap to keep my wife happy. Happy wife equals happy life, right? After getting a quick rundown from one of the friendly staff, we settled on for a flight (6 glass of 4oz) and a pint of seasonal IPA. The flight option was an excellent way for us to get introduced to their beer selection and the curated selection was tasty/refreshing. Henshouse is BYOF (bring your own food) establishment but they do serve food on select days (think they partner up with pop-up local food business owners). We wished we had known that ahead of time because we were craving for some snacks after few drinks. Henhouse Brew Co. seems very involved with its community and we had a good time striking up casual conversation with friendly locals. I'm glad that we unintentionally stumbled upon this brewery, we will be back again soon.
google avatar

Christine B.

Yelp
It was meh. Not great but not horrible. They have a pretty decent variety of brews but not really hit my pallet. Two little televisions so not really the place to hang out to watch the game if thats what you intend on doing. Nice outdoor seating area.
google avatar

Jeeve s.

Yelp
Best brewery in Petaluma. Always fresh and delicious beers. The staff is friendly and the vibes are chill.
google avatar

Kendrick G.

Yelp
This brewery is great! They have a rotating list of flights (6 for $15) carefully selected daily by in-house personel. I am not from the area but this is my third time here (and my best friend's first). We're staying in Petaluma so this brewery wasn't far from our Airbnb. Our friendly and patient server behind the bar gave us a brief and thorough rundown of our flights and the brewery itself. I definitely recommend the Henhouse because every single beer that was included in the flight was distinct and amazing. The also have a taco truck that is posted steps away from the front entrance. Although we didn't try the food, word on the street is the food is really good! Not only is the staff here a joy to be around but we also met some really cool and friendly locals that chatted us up and gave us a few tips for the area. An around a great experience for sure!

Jeff D.

Yelp
My favorite craft brewery! Big fan of their Hazy's!! The food trucks are a nice bonus.
google avatar

Yelp
Attempt number 2! The 1st writing disappeared somehow. Service is great the lady was keeping up with my jokes which makes it special! I ordered a flight of 6, everything was mine blowing and beyond expectation. If the style was supposed to be dry I was thrown a desert! At the style it was to be sweet edged it was candy. Crisp is Crisp, clear is wow. This place is across the street from lagunitas and I think it's a better stop!
google avatar

S B.

Yelp
Love Henhouse and love that this is in Petaluma. Stoked is a pale ale I drink often, one of my go to pale ales. Their IPAs are awesome. Having this in Petaluma (and Santa Rosa) is a great compliment to the big name breweries (Lagunitas and Russian River). One of the great up and coming breweries in California, a state that has some of the best breweries in America. I think Northern California is on par with the San Diego area for amazing breweries in Ca (used to be San Diego was the capital of beer). My only complaint about this place is it closes at 9. Crazy for a weekend. I'd give 5 stars even if they just closed at 10. But 9 is not good. Otherwise great place.
google avatar

Julie J.

Yelp
Wow! An unexpected treat for any dark beer lover, let this spot be a haven. Tasty delightful thoughtful dark brews for the experienced drinker which was tantalizing! Short on the lady merch and vibe was on the masculine side, desite the name "hen house", that being said the place was very comfortable.
google avatar

Derek R.

Yelp
After seeing reviews I was expecting a little more out of this place. Maybe we hit it on the wrong day or time. Was there on Saturday but fairly early around 4. The vibe was odd. Not relaxed or fun just kind of dead. The beer was alright but did not really enjoy the place. Had one beer and left. May try again we shall see.
google avatar

Kimberly P.

Yelp
This is the second location for Hen Hen House. I highly recommend you visit! The beer is great and the atmosphere is super fun! Saisons are my favorite but they have a great goes, stout, double IPAs, and many other yummy IPAs. They don't offer food but always have fresh popcorn as a snack. The allow dogs which is a huge plus for me! It can get crowded but the beer is totally worth it!
google avatar

J S.

Yelp
Ordered a flight of beers, giving me general preferences in beer but the final decisions being dealer's choice. The bartender thoughtfully looked at the options then filled out the form. He then went over the flavors in each beer in the paddle, also giving an order to drinking. The beers were delicious, with a lot of flavor variation among the IPAs. My wife enjoyed the coconut porter and blonde ale. Excellent service! I do wish they had a better food truck that day. The Caribbean food was just so-so, but I can't ding HH for the food truck.
google avatar

Yelp
Most awkward brewery experience. Mostly the one shorter bearded guy checking vaxx cards. First. Got a beer, sat down and was approached as if I was not allowed to be there unless I found him first. Second. I was not completely sitting. One leg somewhat hanging touching the ground. He came over and told me I could not stand and had to sit at the table I was at. No joke, one cheek on the chair one not. Third. We asked to pull up a 5th chair to a 4 person table. Seeing the table next to us with 6, this did not seem to be an issue. We were told we could not use an empty stool from the bar. There were 4-6 empty stools at the bar. We were not allowed to stand so had to find a new table outside where the heaters were not on. Overall not a pleasant experience. This individual might have been having a bad day or just needs to work on his social interactions. Beer was fine. Probably won't be back.
google avatar

Marissa R.

Yelp
First time visiting Petaluma breweries and this was the first brewery I stopped at. It was a Tuesday afternoon, some of the breweries aren't open at the beginning of the week so it was nice that this was an option. They have a gorgeous patio area and the staff is so knowledgeable about the beers and friendly. Fridge helped me out, I got a flight which comes with 6 beers of your choice. They have a really good beer selection if you like IPAs. They have a number of cans you can take gone too. I took home a pack of their frozen envelope. Merch is also available! I took home a t shirt as a souvenir. Hoping to be back soon!
google avatar

Sarai T.

Yelp
Great beer, great service and this brewery does a lot for their community. What more can you ask for?
google avatar

Thomas S.

Yelp
This was a pretty great experience. It was Father's Day, but they had two people working and could run two separate lines to check people in. It's a small space with not a lot of seating but we got a table. We enjoyed the experience. Their beer is great!
google avatar

Peter K.

Yelp
This place is super chill. Giant steins, they put on the UW game and the Sugar Ray station made the party, so glad it wasn't that stupid 80s Madonna station.
google avatar

Jonathan P.

Yelp
Fantastic brewery that holds up to the juggernaut across the street. Ample seating inside and out and a fantastic selection of beers to suit all preferences.
