Henne Kirkeby Kro

"This traditional-looking 18C thatched inn has a contrastingly modern interior and comes complete with a bespoke chef's table as well as some sumptuously stylish bedrooms. A well-chosen wine list accompanies original, well-balanced and technically accomplished dishes. Lunch sees a lighter menu." - Michelin Inspector

Michelin Celebrates the Vibrant Nordic Dining Scene with Three Special Awards

"The MICHELIN Guide Nordic Countries Welcome and Service Award 2019 went to Henne Kirkeby Kro in Henne, Denmark. From the moment you pull up at this beautiful thatched inn until the time comes to return to real life, you find yourself captivated by the magic of Henne. There’s its delightful setting in the Danish countryside, and the technically accomplished, two-Michelin-starred cooking of Paul Cunningham, but it’s also the friendliness and warmth of the service team that makes a meal at Henne Kirkeby Kro such a special experience. Service is overseen by charismatic restaurant manager Garrey Dawson, whose strong presence, composure and kindness make him a real asset to the business. He and his team run the place in a professional yet wonderfully natural manner, making their guests feel instantly at home. Whether they work in the kitchen or in front-of-house, it is clear to see that every member of the Henne team works together, the result being smooth, organized service that is full of enthusiasm and free from any unnecessary formality. Dishes are succinctly described and come at an even pace; wines are explained in as much depth as guests require—and if you leave your choice to the sommelier, you won’t be disappointed, nor left out of pocket. Bespoke menus are printed out and presented to diners as a keepsake, the kind of attention to detail that ensures a meal at Henne will live long in the memory." - The MICHELIN Guide Nordic Editorial Team

Normally I wouldn’t consider reviewing an experience like this, specifically since professionals have already done it, but I feel compelled to do it on behalf of my in-laws that just offered me and my partner this supposedly incredible experience that hardly reached any of our expectations. ||The intimidating two star reputation sets up the experience to a great and exciting start which unfortunately is never really fully accomplished. |The food is certainly good but once compared to many others one, or even none, Michelin star places lacks that extra special feeling that you would expect. Adding to the disappointment is the service. It shouldn’t be too much to ask that the waiter knows how to simply make a drink when the value of that drink certainly includes a high service fee (at a second attempt to make a g&t, not even ice was included in the drink). The extravagant decor also reflects the inconsistency of the place where kitsch meets modern in an attempt to be cool and different, paring expensive pieces with very blend and doll designs. Even the Hästens bed is then furnished with bad duvets and pillows proving once again the lack of understanding of luxury and comfort. Expensive is certainly not a synonym of quality or exclusivity and in the case of Henne Kirkeby Kro that applies to both the food and the stay. ||All and all, the experience didn’t fulfill the expectations and stayed far behind from other similar places, like Falsled, Dyvig, Frederiksminde, Dragsholm, so much so that even the table next to us had to ask ‘why the two stars’ which in the waiter’s opinion are justified by the little details such as ‘the washcloths in the bathroom’… there’s a constant attempt to be luxurious, extravagant and ‘expensive’ (word of the same waiter) but it always falls short due to the lack of personality and clear point of view. I certainly rate the experience two stars… out of five.

Had our set lunch at this Two Michelin Stars and the venue was warm and cosy, it felt like having a meal at someone’s home. The service was good especially when someone mistakenly took our umbrella, they were kind enough to gave us one so thank you. 😊 The food was good, the ingredients was fresh for sure. The little negative feedback I have was the menu doesn’t seem special. Probably just my personal expectation for two Michelin. Overall, we did had a good lunch. Here are the photos I took.

So... Just ended my two Day stay at Henne and I have to say they knocked it out of the park. The first night I had their regular menu with their Prestige wine option. The Food, wine and service was excellent. Before the dinner the second evening I thought they would have trouble keeping up the high level just cause they would serve something they haven't prepared and drilled for.. Oh man, was I wrong to doubt them.. The second day was all Seafood and I loved it.. Winepairings were spot on.. Desserts were magical. Service even more attentive and welcoming. Everyone took really good care of me.. Also, the Hunting Lodge, where I spent two nights was on point. Large room with a good bed. All in all, a fantasic experience and stay. Thank you to all the staff.

Amazing lunch. Perfect Danish surroundings, beautiful garden. Great food, friendly and professional service, and a world class wine list. We could not have asked for anything more.

Was looking forward to two-star dining at Henne which we had visited before and enjoyed very much. |This visit was not at all successful.|The review has not so much to do with the dining and food but what we experienced afterwards. It so happened that my partner got sick from eating in the restaurant. Very sick, with very explicit symptoms including vomiting and diarrhea. Clearly from something in one of the dishes. This was also the case for an elderly couple whom we met the next morning at breakfast. The symptoms, reactions and timing was the same.|It was when we informed the restaurant about this the next morning that things really got disappointing. Everyone we met that day from staff never acknowledge that this illness had anything to do with our visit to the restaurant (which it clearly had, as we had not eaten any other place that day) We were only met with comments that we probably drank too much wine(!) (which we didn’t as we only ordered a half wine menu) or that we we´re probably not used to eating gourmet meals(!) We were shocked over the arrogant and patronizing way we were meet, and the underlying assumption that we probably were trying to get the stay for free by crying food poisoning. |I do not understand how a two-star restaurant can live with such poor and arrogant treatment of customers getting sick from eating in the restaurant. After having contacted management, the same arguments were mentioned however in a politer tone. Still, no one from Henne Kirkeby Kro took responsibility for the ruined stay nor did they in any way apologize to us.|We are left with an unbelievable disappointing experience. We had expected more from that restaurant (first we had expected to not get sick from the food) and can simply not recommend anyone going there. |Visit instead one of the (now) many other Michelin restaurants Denmark now offers and avoid being patronized – and sick from the food served.|

We had two very nice, modern rooms. The Hästens bed was extremely comfortable. The country-like surroundings are beautiful & peaceful. Breakfast is very nice with all the nice food you can dream about.

last we loved our modern room very much and this time we had a different one in a different building (jaegerhuset) and enjoyed it as well. plenty of space with a little private sitting area outside. beautifully designed and very functional. perfect for a great gourmet getaway.

We were eating at the 2* Michelin restaurant hence the reason for staying overnight. I can’t think of why else you would stay there as it is not cheap at £350 per night in the middle of nowhere. However, you get a lot for your money. We effectively had a suite in the hunting lodge which is one of a series of out buildings converted to bedrooms. Don’t think wood and stone here because this building is a modern brick built building with a big sloping roof. It’s fabulous. There is an inner courtyard turned into a beach theme. Very clever.|Room was stunning. Super comfortable bed. Double shower wet room and a bath in the centre of the room (not my cup of tea but nice to look at). All equipment is of the highest quality.|Free mini bar.|I have reviewed the restaurant separately.
