The 16 Best Breakfast Spots In Portland, Oregon - Portland, OR - The Infatuation

"Portland lacks a robust deli culture, but it does have legit bagels. Henry Higgins’ is among the best—and that’s why they often sell out by 11am. The original Foster-Powell location with limited seats sells breakfast sandwiches and gooey reubens. But we suggest going the purist route and ordering a simple bagel with cream cheese to appreciate the shiny, chewy crust and dense interior that separates a great bagel from a dinner roll with a hole in it. Lightly sweet pumpernickel and lox cream cheese or the one with nutty sesame and scallion are great combos. The beauty of being 2,500 miles from NYC is that you can order a blueberry bagel or a seasonal apple walnut schmear and no one will care. If you prefer bialys, which are extremely scarce in town, this spot bakes a limited amount on weekends." - krista garcia

10 Real-Deal Bagel Shops in Portland | Eater Portland

"With four bustling locations — each distinctly styled to suit the vibe of their neighborhood — Henry Higgins is perhaps Portland’s most popular bagel (and recently won a People’s Choice award at the first annual Portland Bagel-Off). Each location offers more than a dozen bagel varieties, including a seasonal special, as well as a wider range of non-bagel sandwiches, deli sides like chopped liver and pickled herring, and baked goodies like rugelach and knishes." - Daniel Barnett

Google
Definitely the closest to east coat bagels you can get in Portland. Great breakfast bagels and fast service, super easy to pop in before work. Lots of variety so you can get something new every visit. Iced coffee is tasty and strong. I've been going regularly and I like their staff, even if they don't always get my name right.

Deeply Buffalo

Google
As an east coaster, this place has great bagels! Great coffee. I give it a 4.8/5! Excellent experience would highly recommend

Everett Easton

Google
Perfectly fine bagels but indistinguishable from any other bagel shop. The only difference is that my wife and I both had to remove about 2/3 of the cream cheese, though I guess that’s better than the other way around.

David Darkstar

Google
Over priced stale bagels... over charged and whole order was wrong... The whole dozen bagels I ordered were stale and rock hard... when I called the guy on the phone denied any wrong doing and said nothing could be done...what a load of crap. Won't be going to this place again. Man i really wanted to like this spot being so close to the house... guess I'll just keep going down town to get some legit boiled bagels made by real new York deli guys.

Google
It was my first time here, and everything on their menu looked so good that I had a hard time deciding! I actually mispoke and forgot to order another bagel, and the nice girl at the counter was extremely nice and understanding and accommodated me. Great bagels and great customer service! I also got a coffee, and they have oat milk, which is usually more expensive to get with coffee at most coffee shops, but here they don't charge you any extra for that 👍

Google
Wanted to try something aside from my normal speedboat stop, they had salmon and I was so excited. I got the smoked salmon bagel, it was $20 and it barely had any salmon on it. The bagel was tough in texture. A bummer for how cute it is.

Andrew Jaru

Google
Great bagels! Love the texture and freshness of it all. Seating is limited and orders can take a bit when they're busy, but it's very much got Portland vibes all over it.

Sola Season

Google
Excellent boiled bagels. Staff was really cool and chill ✨

Yelp
Solid bagel sandwiches off foster! The bagels are 10/10 and they cook fresh egg for the sandwich. They have a fridge of cold beverage for drinks. The inside has some bar seating and 2 picnic tables outside. Staff is also super friendly. Worth a few visits!

Yelp
My first visit here after being thrilled to find a bagel shop so nearby me. My first impression was a smaller place that is very unkempt. The bagels in the case seem to just be tossed onto some parchment paper on a baking sheet. The paper all brown and askew- made me wonder how fresh they were. I went home with my bagels, and could barely get through the bottom half of my bagel with a serrated knife. I couldn't figure out if it was overcooked somehow, or just very stale. I was so hopeful, but won't be returning. My positive is the folks working there were very nice.

Yelp
Probably my favorite bagel shop in Portland. Never have really had a problem not having what I want in stock and we freeze 90% of the bagels immediately so they stay fresh. I will say, the price is a little steep and that's my only complaint. We would come by far more often if it wasn't nearly $25 for 12 bagels.

Kristine M.

Yelp
I ordered a toasted bagel with lox & butter. The bagel was fine but the lox was grossly inadequate. Not enough for both sides of the bagel. Very skimpy & disappointing.

Josh L.

Yelp
First of all, the bagels are very good. Kind of expensive for a bagel, but these days, what isn't. Also, the coffee is solid. However, we live nearby and have a running joke that every time we come here, something gets messed up about the order. To be honest, it's probably only 70% of the time, but still. Just now, the guy punched our order in wrong, very nicely apologized for the delay, reconfirmed the order correctly, and then STILL gave me the wrong damn bagel. It's funny, but it also explains my 3 star review. At these prices, I'd expect to get what I order. I'm always nice and tip; I've been in service, I get it, but this is like a 5 year trend.

Yelp
My daughter is a vegan chef and these are her favorite bagels. We ordered a dozen bagels yesterday for a family lunch in Independence. They were delicious. Super friendly staff and clean store. I'll get these again next time I visit. Thanks

Yelp
Came in for breakfast and ordered breakfast sandwich and loved it absolutely delicious and definitely will be back.

Yelp
Update: still amazing. They have a fancy new menu board which I like and their seasonal flavors are on point!
google avatar

Hannah W.

Yelp
Bagels remind me of east coast bagels :) But I came here to mention how delicious the pickles are! They taste homemade, but I'm not sure. Perfect crunch and balance of tang. I wish I could buy these!

Jay M.

Yelp
A very good place, with very good bagels. But NEVER ENOUGH ONION BAGELS!!! Do you guys notice that you sell out of onion bagels every day? Why don't you make more of them???

Lisa D.

Yelp
Ordered bagels for a business meeting. They were ok in taste but after about 2hrs they got hard, but seriously who eats a bagel that has been sitting out for 2hrs. They only real complaint my people had was they didn't come sliced. Because this was for a business meeting I had requested utensils, which I had assumed would be plastic knives to spread the cream cheese with. However I did not receive any utensils, or napkins

Amiyah S.

Yelp
great taste, horrible portions and weird atmosphere. $9 for meat and egg bagel with one piece of bacon is a little crazy. the staff was silent and awkward towards each other and custome. there wasn't even music playing in the store. need a revamp or new management cause that was a whack morning

Yelp
Best bagels I'm Portland hands down ! An as a New Yorker I should know. Great sandwich options as well
google avatar

Kim Ann T.

Yelp
One of my favorite bagel shops ever, and it's so close to where I stay whenever I'm in Portland! Great bagels and even better service. Get there early though, as lines can get pretty longer closer to mid-morning (even on weekdays). The lox bagel is delicious!

Mark C.

Yelp
For many years, I kept coming back because of the delicious bagels. However, the dirty conditions and poor service have finally done me in. My new favorite bagel shop Puddle Town, which has outlets in many parts of Portland. Bye-bye HH.
google avatar

Ally D.

Yelp
As a New Yorker, I'm a bit discriminating about my bagel. Theirs do not disappoint! Excellent outside brunch with a chewy interior. Their schmears are great (smoked salmon, especially). HOWEVER, always check your order before leaving. Ours was incorrect today and I heard another patron go up to the counter and tell them their order was incorrect. It's not the first time this has happened.

Yelp
The bagel and shmear itself was decent. The service was just lacking as They forgot our hot chocolate and i had to go back up to the cashier to remind them to make it. They also got my partners order wrong. There was barely any customers and there were 5 of them working so that's kind of where the annoyance came from.
google avatar

Crystal L.

Yelp
Good bagels, friendly service. Slightly chewy exterior and soft interior, exactly what a bagel should be.

Yelp
This is a strange place. I've been here several times now and no one has ever greeted me. When you walk up to the register, they just stare at you. When I've tried to make polite conversation, they literally didn't respond and just ask what I want to order. After each item, "anything else?" This has been multiple different people, so I'm not sure if they're actually being trained to give these responses or every person who works here just does not want to talk to customers. Bagels are cut completely crooked, and cream cheese is slathered on unevenly (1/2 inch thick on one side, 2 inches thick on the other). Chairs are old and rickety. We only moved back into the neighborhood in 2021, so perhaps this is all due to COVID issues but the other locations I've been to have much friendlier people and better quality food.

Dave S.

Yelp
just got home from buying a dozen bagels. there were only 9 in the bag. seriously? I have to count the number of bagels you pur in a bag?

Yelp
Due to having a newborn with us in the car, we wanted a quick and easy breakfast. So we decided to order HENRY HIGGINS via Grubhub app for takeout. We placed our order, then drove to and parked outside HENRY HIGGINS as we waited for the order to be fulfilled. Well, I'm not sure if it was HENRY HIGGINS or Grubhub but the status of our order never updated past "your order is in the works." So we ended up just going into HENRY HIGGINS to inquire about our order and it was indeed done, so basically we waited longer than needed. No biggie. What was a bit of a deal though was we had paid extra for our bagels to have avocado on them. Well I guess they were out avocados, which is totally okay, but HENRY HIGGINS didn't mention this to us at all when picking up our order. This is bothersome because it wasn't until we were home that we realized we didn't get the avocado but were still upcharged for them. I believe HENRY HIGGINS could have said something simple when picking up the order like, "oh hey btw, we don't have avocados but we've removed the upcharge already" or something along those lines. Now the breakfast bagels themselves were really good! Like, REALLY GOOD! I would for sure go back next time I'm in town but this time I'll just not use Grubhub, make sure my bagel was prepared as ordered, and that I was charged correctly before I depart, lol.

Zachary R.

Yelp
Definitely not going to be my go to bagel place. Stopped by to get a dozen bagels and cream cheese on my way into work. Apart from being located in a seemly sketchy area complete with a boarded up window Higgins didn't really deliver on the bagel front. The interior seemed somewhat chaotic in it's layout and definitely didn't feel inviting in any way. I was able to get my bagels without incident and the staff was certainly friendly enough to make me reconsider how I was feeling up till that point. The bagels themselves were disappointing which was unfortunate. Mostly because of the flavor which was very bland. I would opt for a bagel from Safeway over these. I had 2 different bagels one apparently was supposed to be blueberry which I would have never guessed. After not enjoying that one I moved on to something else, a sesame seed which was better but not by a significant amount. I'll keep looking for a spot to get some fresh bagels.
google avatar

Adam S.

Yelp
Used to love this place but they need to get their balance of fulfilling online orders against in person orders under control. It took 30 minutes to get a bagel today without any warning or apology. I've never watched a human place onions on a bagel any slower in my life.
google avatar

Robert B.

Yelp
It was ok, got the bagel breakfast sandwich with bacon and wasn't horrible. I would just stick a normally bagel and cream cheese here.

kathleen S.

Yelp
I ordered salt bagels for pick up. I got a call a few minutes before my pick up time I got a call saying they were out of salt bagels. I said okay cancel my order I only want the salt bagels. I was promptly hung up on. I tried calling the number back and got a voicemail that was full. I tried calling 5 times. I sent an email and no response. I did get a refund.
google avatar

Dominic R.

Yelp
Not the cleanest shop. Was grossed out from seeing the fresh product just be hovering off the uncleaned floor. Seriously though this shop is so dirty and just lacks food safety.
google avatar

Ariel W.

Yelp
If you want a good boiled bagel, then this is the place and the everything bagels are seasoned as they should be.

Dorothy H.

Yelp
Bought 2 Everything bagels. Took them home, sliced them, Popped them in toaster, buttered them. Oh so good. Much better than cream cheese.
google avatar

Georgie K.

Yelp
I have been to the Foster location many times. The bagels are good and they have yummy whitefish spread. I just looked at their website to see if I can email them to contact. T%here is no easy access to contact management unless one is wanting to do a catering order or whole sale order. So I am writing this review. I do not not know what goes on at the Foster location, but it always takes 15-20 min to get up to the register to order. They are always slow like this. 2 people chatting and super slowly making sandwiches and 1 person on register, getting bagels, drinks and more. Does not work well
google avatar

Rachel D.

Yelp
LOX BAGELS. So stinkin good! Amount other things, they have fresh bagels and a long list of flavors too. I mainly get the lox topped bagel (ask the bagel to be warmed) and they are top notched. You can get multi packs to take home too, which I suggest but they don't keep left in the bag, from my experience
google avatar

Keely N.

Yelp
The line is always long, but definitely worth it! I definitely understand the hype of these bagels! I tried the vegan harvest with spinach and garlic bagel and it was delicious!

Yelp
I arrived between 9-9:30am on a Wednesday morning. People left as I arrived, people arrived as I left, so there appeared to be a steady stream of patrons. This also, as far as I know, is prime breakfast hour, right? Why then, were all of my half dozen bagels the consistency of stale, day old bagels? These were not fresh boiled or fresh baked. I was born and raised in NYC, so I know good bagels. After living in the PNW for over a decade, I'll even eat mediocre bagels as long as they aren't stale. I'm sadly not sure I can say these bagels are worth the money. I love that this is a female-owned business (3 stars for that), but her employees at this location were not pleasant, even after I addressed them with a hearty "Good morning!" Additionally, they got my order wrong, and I didn't catch it until I got home because they didn't offer me a receipt, even though I know the option to text me one when I pay with my credit card on their iPad app pops up automatically. She wouldn't even let me fill in the tip myself (I always tip, but I don't like being put on the spot for one they way they do that here), so I couldn't see my grand total before she asked me to wait outside for my order or press the button requesting a receipt...and I didn't ask because I assumed she would do this given she didn't immediately ask if I wanted one after leaving a tip. That's just basic good customer service etiquette, right? But you know what they say about assuming... Got home and my half dozen bagels ended up being 8 bagels, but missing one of the kinds I asked for (sesame -- who runs out of sesame bagels?!). They didn't even tell me they were out of sesame or ask what I'd like instead. So now I have two extra stale bagels that I have to throw out -- and I hate throwing out food. Ultimately, this was a learning experience and a waste of money. Looking forward to trying Spielman's next.

Yelp
Great bagels. Really delicious. Best in town for sure. Very consistent. Mostly a take out place, but both locations I've been at had places to sit.
google avatar

Laurie C.

Yelp
I ordered a dozen bagels online Thursday night for pickup on Friday, thinking I would avoid a line and get what I asked for before things ran out. I PAID FOR THIS ORDER THURSDAY NIGHT. I get there on Friday, and I am told that they're out of what I ordered. Isn't this the whole point of online ordering? Half of the order was 6 jalapeño bagels, half was whole wheat. They had a bag of 12 whole wheat for me. Please give me 6 jalapeño bagels.
google avatar

Lisah M.

Yelp
"This is the best lox sandwich I've ever had" - my husband who lived in NYC for 6 years. True east coast bagels the way they should be made!! Absolutely delicious. We'll probably go for another one tomorrow before we leave Portland.
google avatar

Julius P.

Yelp
I just moved here from Hawai'i and saw this giant line outside so my girlfriend and I decided to come Check this place out. It's Soooooo gooood we gotthe LOX BAGEL.
google avatar

Christina C.

Yelp
Whenever I crave for bagels, I know exactly where to go! I especially love getting breakfast bagels or a bagel with schmear from Henry Higgins. My go-to breakfast bagel is the everything cheese bagel, egg, sausage, provolone cheese, and of course, salmon schmear. It's so cool how HH has a variety of meats and cheeses that you can add to your breakfast bagel. If I want something lighter, I'll go for the everything bagel with salmon schmear. Hands down one of the best bagel shops in town!
google avatar

Jennie S.

Yelp
Passed by this place by chance while out on a walk with a friend and was immediately hooked by the fresh smell of bagels. We were going to forgo getting anything since we weren't particularly hungry but caved after seeing the long lines. I ordered an everything bagel with their salmon schmear. Bagel was made fresh, still hot from the oven with a crunchy crust. You could taste the difference upon the first bite, with their use of quality and locally sourced ingredients. Definitely worlds away from any regular store bought bagels. The only caveat I had with my particular order was the excessive amount of schmear per bagel. I don't know if this is with every order, but I had a good inch of schmear on mine, which nothing wrong with the flavor of the schmear, but it was definitely too heavy for my liking and sadly, completely overwhelmed the fresh taste of the bagel. Will probably opt out of any schmear next time, or at least only half. Looking forward to trying the jalepeno next time. I've heard it's the best in town and sells out fast.

Cheryl F.

Yelp
The people working here are so rude. Overhearing how they treat each other already sucks, but then when I got to the counter I said "Hello how are you?" And was greeted with a shitty eyeroll and no response. Not even a "What can I get for you?" Better bagels and service at Bernstein's Bagels!

J R.

Yelp
Excellent bagels. Not such great ambiance: I never feel like staying on site. So get 'em to go! Service people behind the counter mostly attentive and quick
google avatar

Steven B.

Yelp
Have driven by many times and seeing people lined up figured it was a coffee shop until visiting friends wanted bagels and I did a search on Yelp to see it was so close by. The bagels are a bit larger than a traditional NY bagel but not as gigantic by far as a Noah's bagel. The interior texture was perfect and I really liked that my everything bagel had the everything on both sides. I toasted mine at home and it toasted beautifully with the perfect texture, not soft and not overly tough. HHBB!

R H.

Yelp
Mothers Day morning. Out of bagels and smear. You would think someone would have thought to make extra today!

Joey B.

Yelp
great bagels but waiting a full hour for 1 sausage egg and cheese sandwich is pretty ridiculous
google avatar

Mark S.

Yelp
Amazing, real bagels! Real boiled bagels. Quality, Variety... They've got a really cool crew... they are together, despite the Sunday morning flock. Impressive to see something done so well! Hip location... mannnnnnnnnn
google avatar

Mr M.

Yelp
Go to any other Henry Higgins this location is awful , the staff is rude , the orders are always wrong . This place is nothing compared to the other shops . Very awful experience here
google avatar

Michael O.

Yelp
Why are you close? I got here at 20 of three and it says you're open till 3 o'clock what happened? There were three people in the store????
google avatar

Erica B.

Yelp
Love this place. Salmon lox on everything is my go to! Also enjoy getting a bag of day olds for like $6, if they're still available!
google avatar

Justine P.

Yelp
HH Hey guys maybe put a sign out front for first time folks that are calling in orders. I was instructed to wait outside & you'd call my name....after 20min got back in line only to have the ca$hier tell me that protocol is wait in line to pay for pick up orders. Thanks, love Karen
google avatar

Tessa F.

Yelp
HH is my favorite bagel shop. This location and the one on NE 19th are consistently delicious. Their bagels are just the right chewiness and toast up beautifully. Their flavored cream cheeses are way better than whatever you'd get in the store. Staff is always friendly and helpful. When I crave these bagels, I buy a dozen at a time and freeze them. Bringing them up to room temperature on the counter makes them taste as fresh as the day I bought them.
