The Best Sick Day Foods to Order for Delivery in Portland | Eater Portland

"When dealing with a tumultuous stomach, opting for something bland is often a safe bet. However, no one wants to be stuck eating saltines and plain toast. Enter: the salt bagel, which lands in the prime spot between comforting and inoffensive. Henry Higgins offers single bagels with butter or Earth Balance for delivery, as well as full dozens for those looking to stock up. They’re available via CCC, Uber Eats, Postmates, DoorDash, and Grubhub." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

As good as east coast bagel? Wouldn’t particularly say so. But for the PNW they’re yummy! I came in and ordered a lox bagel (with no onion). It came stuffed with tomatoes, capers, and a good serving of cream cheese. Also, their black coffee is good! They have wifi, although I wasn’t able to use it, since it didn’t seem like anybody was there to work or study. But their seating is good and the vibes are cozy.

Google
Worst service ever! I am used to going to the location off 23rd and it is night and day. I LOVED the other location. Moved to the neighborhood but honestly it takes over 20 minutes to get a bagel on a Monday at 10am, so I will just be going downtown or the 20 other bagel shops in the area. Also the bagel was made wrong! Not sure how you can spread cream cheese on bagels SO slowly and not even know which one you put on it. I asked them to remake it, with much attitude and it came out 30 seconds later not even toasted. I work in customer service and know how it is, this is simply too far. Not even a thank you or a sorry once.

Google
BEST BAGELS IN PORTLAND. Don’t sleep on these hole in the wall cafes scattered across the east side. I love a simple bagel with cream cheese but their bagel breakfast sandwiches are also 10/10.

Google
I've been coming to this HH for years, and they definitely churn out the best bagels in PDX; I'm from NY and these are the closest thing to an east coast bagel you can find in town. I think their SE Foster location opened first, and they also now have a store on NW 23rd but the one in Kerns is just off Sandy and worth the trip.

Google
The bagels are solid. Not like awe inspiring, but a solid breakfast. They are a little tough if you have a lot on your breakfast sando (eggs busting out the sides with each bite 🤣) but with just cream cheese it's perfect. The staff and service was good. A clean place to eat with some outside seating. The latte was also really good.

Google
I was walking down the street in this neighborhood I'd never been in before and I stumbled onto this little bagel shop. It was very crowded so I had to take my bagel to go and it was late in the day so they didn't have a wide selection by that time of the day but I got what I wanted. I had an onion bagel with hummus. Delicious. Perfect amount of bagel and hummus. Excellent bagel.

Google
The bagels are great and so are their homemade cream cheeses. Coffee is alright but not as good as you're going to get at your local coffee shops. The bagel sandwiches are good and they cook the bacon and egg perfectly! I just wish that it came with shmear and it's a little pricey here. Overall, this place is good but I prefer Spielmans.

Google
Not exactly like the bagels from the northeast in a Jewish deli but decent for Portland. Nothing special but not the worst bagel I’ve had. The smoked salmon is hot smoked, not cold smoked like lox. Their lox and whitefish are from Acme in NY so very salty. The prices are high for Portland. Like that they have Dr Browns sodas and at least half of the customers wore masks while ordering to go.

Yelp
We drove an hour to visit this bagel shop. Truth be told-there are very few truly good foodie places outside of this metro, so I was hoping it was up to par. I had no idea what to expect other than the yelp reviews. Now let me preface this with saying, I'm a food snob. Im beyond what a normal foodie should expect. "Normal" fare is not really good enough for me, so I was hoping this joint had a little extra oompf. At least that's what the ratings said. So we got there, and parking was fine. Mid morning on a Saturday, and it was small! enough tables to feed a crowd but not enough to say hey entire city come HERE! Which is really nice. There were MANY takeout orders bagged up and waiting on the side of the register [that's a great sign]. And this is portland right? You cannot walk 5 feet without petting a dog. So I was digging the vibe. Hubby got a bacon egg and cheese on a sesame bagel, and I got a sausage egg and cheese on an everything bagel. First-the garlic that was coming off of my bagel? HEAVEN. You know when places try too hard and burn the garlic bits? not here. I was literally scooping these nuggets up off of my wrapper and eating them like an entre. It's VERY easy to burn the garlic, #IYKYK. The bagel itself? chewy..good texture, just thick enough you need a drink to enjoy with your meal. The sausage? meh.. was irrelevant. I was hoping for some kind of flavor but the garlic bagel made up for the entire meal. But .. lets talk about the bacon..shall we? IF you're a bacon lover..I cannot explain to you how good...how flavorful this bacon was. It was the STAR of the show IMO. I've had a lot of bacon in my day. And I'm from Chicago-so the Midwesterners are no stranger to any beef or pork product in any way shape or form. And I've lived here for 5 years. This is beef and pork haven. But again-I say-WHAT did you do to the bacon? Tell me nothing and I would believe you. It was unlike any other I've ever had. I'm not blowing smoke. I don't over embellish. When I say GET the bacon, I'm serious. We also had to pickup a ruben to go and while I was disappointed it was also on a bagel [hello..you're at a bagel shop honey what did you expect?] it was okay. The meat? fantastic. The sauce? non traditional as far as bagels go. This was a trying to hard wanna be sandwich BUT I ate the whole thing if that says anything. Bottom line-if you're in the market for this kind of grub? MAKE THE DRIVE-I'm 100% positive you'll find something you'll like. OH and did I mention the small regret I had after leaving because I DID NOT PICK UP A BAGELDOG? #sighs.. we'll be back. I'm positive.

Yelp
$24 for a bagel with lox? That is absurd and anyone charging that should feel like a thief. A bagel thief. I know these bagels are decent, but that price is absurd and will keep me away from your many locations forrrrrrrevvvvvvvver. I mean how can you justify that? Bagel and cream cheese =2$, red onions/tomatoes/capers=$2, 1/8th of an lb of lox=$2. This is waaaay over priced. Anyone charging over $20 for a bagel is insane. They're charging 3x+ an acceptable price. How can any of ya'll sleep with yourselves? Have fun with this spot, maybe they can sell you a $8 bottle of water to keep things on point. Enjoy :)

Yelp
The staff was nice, but the vibes of this place were kinda weird. It's super dark, the seating is kind of unwelcoming, and it's probably best to just grab stuff and go. This place has all the fixings of a Jewish deli; Dr. Brown's soda, black and whites, latkes, bagels/bagel sandwiches, potato salad, etc. My wife and I got two bagels with schmear and a black and white. The food was fine; a bit overwhelming with the schmear even for New York standards, I swear there was a whole brick of cream cheese in my bagel. Overall this place is fine but I'm probably not going to become a regular here.

Yelp
I used to work nearby and I had breakfast bagels almost everyday.!!! They were always warm, fresh and tasty.! They make *incredible Reubens, and I especially liked their delightfully seasoned sauerkraut, it is well drained and has aromatic spices( maybe cumin and juniper berry) . Extra credit for "not too sweet sauce". It is rare to find such a well balanced Ruben. What a treat! Unfortunately, I must recommend attention to food handling and storage. Please do not eat meat from an unrefrigerated display case. Specifically, bagel dogs need refrigeration!!. Feel the glass on the case and if it is room temp, order something else.

Yelp
Came here on a whim before I drove back home to Bend. Plenty of parking nearby, which was the most important to me at the time and probably the defining factor of what made me choose this place. Great bagels! I got a plain bagel with butter. It was perfect. Not out of this world, but very good! Service was same, nothing out of this world but they were nice. It's a cute place inside, very unique and feels homey. I'd come again!

Yelp
A good place to get regular bagels or a bagels sandwich. I opted out for a bagel sandwich on a jalepeno bagel and was satisfied. The bagels here are worth trying out. The service was quick and friendly.

Yelp
Fresh, delicious tasting bagels with a wide assortment of cream cheeses! Came here the morning before a big hike and didn't disappoint, loved it so much we took some on the go for some post-hike snacking. The customer service was stellar in the morning :) good vibes Whoever was on aux has excellent music taste HAHA loved the energy in there and was able carry it throughout the rest of our day :) will return in the future

Yelp
$10 for a bagel with spread, avocado & tomato! I know inflation is bad, but two small tomato slices and a few thin slices of avocado...ugh. Sad times :(
google avatar

Jayotta F.

Yelp
Boiled bagels are the only way to go and they make em the way you want em. I love that they have pumpernickel!
google avatar

Cami S.

Yelp
Bagels, cream cheese, and coffee are really good! They make the bagel pretty quickly and it wasn't too busy on a Saturday morning!!
google avatar

Yelp
This place has the absolute worst service ever. The last time I was here, they gave my food away to someone else and remade it after we'd been waiting half an hour and inquired. Today I decided to give them another try. I came in while no one else was in line & immediately a massive line formed behind me. I waited 20 minutes while several people who'd come in after me got their food, so I finally asked someone on staff, only to be handed a bag that been sitting on the prep table for at least ten minutes. The bar was already low given my previous experience here, but this place sucks. Laughable that the default tip is 20% on the POS system.
google avatar

Drew A.

Yelp
Other than being wildly overpriced, the bagel was super thin and the scallion cream cheese was fully liquefied. Like, it looked like someone soaked a bagel in herby milk. Kind of shockingly bad.
google avatar

Yelp
This was my first stop while in Oregon and they are so friendly. The cashier was a vibe. The music they play cater to people of all ages. The food is fresh and my drink was perfectly made. 10/10 for this location!

Audrey C.

Yelp
Oh my heavens. Where do I begin? When I walked in I was treated like a super star! The people working ruled. I just mentioned to my friends that this was the best bagel sandwich I've ever had in my life. They were skeptical; assuming a hyperbole... I encouraged my friend to try it. He had to admit: this was in fact the best sandwich he'd ever had. Wow. I asked Grace what they usually order and they recommended this. They made it to perfection. I'm truly blown away by my experience here I WILL be back (with friends).
google avatar

Yelp
Affordable + FRESH tasty breakfast sandwich :-) I love poppy seed bagels the most. There is a bunch of seating inside, however, but most do take-out. I've done both + been good experience! I asked if they can do a vegan hot chocolate if it's easy to opt-out/change ingredients and they said no problem. Appreciate that! Absolutely love their vegan bagel dogs but they go fast.
google avatar

Mason Finn K.

Yelp
I tried their everything bagel with vegan butter and loved it! The prices are also very reasonable, especially for the quality of the food. The service was quick and they were nice. Though I didn't dine in, the vibe inside was great!
google avatar

Dani G.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious Fresh!! great selection and friendly staff Place is really cute as well
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
By far the best boiled bagels on the east side of town. Friendly and quick service as well. As a suggestion, I'd buy a half dozen day old bagels at 1/2 price. I'm betting you'll be pleasantly surprised. Their day old bagels are better than any "fresh" bagel you can find.
google avatar

Ploy N.

Yelp
Pretty underwhelmed with their Egg, Meat, and Cheese Sandwich. Flavors were lacking. The Jalapenos bagel was spicy in every bite but that's about the only thing it's got going. Not super well toasted and rather bready. The fried egg was way too oily and my add-on avocado was solid raw... It might have been the combo of things that I picked but really I've had better breakfast sandwich elsewhere. Also, it's rather odd that you have to pay extra for the meat when you picked an Egg, Meat, and Cheese sandwich.

Yelp
Everything about our trip to Henry Higgins was awesome .. except the music today. Lionel Richie and Loverboy?!?! Wasn't that great the first time around .. Oh wait, it changed to Cracker Island - Gorillaz. Nice Save. Five Stars!
google avatar

Steven C.

Yelp
I would like to take this time to say the onion bagel was delicious with jalapeño cream cheese along with great service and friendly. I love Portland. I went to two location and service was pretty much the same. Thank you. If you guys are looking for a bagel place, I would recommend this place because I am coming back when I visit Portland again. Thank you.

Sean C.

Yelp
If inflation is your answer to an entirely skimped bagel I payed 12 bucks for ... then close down already , I've watched this company slowly ease back on quality to a point that I can't support it anymore . Use to love this place

Kathleen L.

Yelp
pretty good bagel. I just moved to Portland from the east coast, so I've been on the hunt for a proper bagel and this is definitely the closest I've found. Good texture and good amount of each of the toppings. It is on the pricier end in my opinion, bacon egg cheese was $9 plus $2 for avocado. Good strong americano as well. Not too watery.

Dallas B.

Yelp
Really disappointing experience here. The staff and management need to be trained on how to treat customers. The service, as mentioned earlier, can be downright disrespectful and rude. Customer service is a dying value and Henry Higgens encompasses that.
google avatar

Claude D.

Yelp
Awesome food and friendly staff. Local Art on the walls and an early 90's bohemian cafe feel. The prices are low compared to competitors
google avatar

Agustina D.

Yelp
Great bagels and their latte is really good! We had the egg sandwich bagel and the salmon one. i will go again with the salmon.

Jennifer S.

Yelp
Bagels are always delicious and consistent! Front counter is always friendly and quick
google avatar

Jennifer V.

Yelp
I had a delicious bagel sandwich from this little shop and I highly recommend stopping for a bite! We also took some bagels and shmear to go and they are good as new when heated up, yum! I deducted one star due to the storefront, the menu is outdoors currently and you are only allowed to occupy a small space in the inside of their rather large store. I understand covid concerns of course but it seems to me there are better ways to arrange the place while staying safe. That aside, I will definitely return the next time I'm in town!
google avatar

Yelp
Came here after discovering Einstein was closed. I was looking for a half dozen variety. First impression I wasn't too surprised to see crowds outside hurdling around for their morning pick me up. This must be a hot spot if you see cars parking and waiting in line. Street parking is available. 20 mins later, my name was called. Pay attention to your name or you'll wait a bit longer. I didn't know what to expect. A box? A bag? Bagged inside of a bag? I had to ask for napkins and knives. I was bummed the bagels weren't sliced in half already. Maybe I should have requested it. Onion bagel was just up my alley with the veggie spread. I'm book marking this place and will plan to come back again to try other items on the menu!

Yelp
I love me a delicious bagel so I'm glad Yelp steered me in Henry Higgins Boiled Bagels direction. The location is pretty industrial and off the main streets so not likely that you will see it driving down, but just tucked away you can find this spot. Parking in the area is free and plenty but get here early to get the bagel flavors you want. We came around 9:30AM on a Saturday and the flavors we wanted to try such as everything, onion, jalapeno, and garlic were gone. :( They did have a poppyseed and salt bagel left so we ended up getting those flavors with egg, bacon, and sausage. The bagel sandwiches come close to $8 each. Good to know that they have delivery on doordash and caviar so I'll be sure to order ahead of time to get the flavors I want. Most people that came just came to pick up their online orders, but don't get me wrong they still had a continuous line out the door when I ordered and was waiting for our items. As for the sandwiches I preferred the bacon, egg, and cheddar cheese on a poppyseed bagel to the sausage, egg, and cheddar cheese on a salt bagel. They definitely don't skimp on the toppings so I should have known the salt would be too much for our tastebuds with the sandwich. I would opt to get the salt with some smear next time. The bagels overall had a nice texture and were chewy. Good sized bagels so I will opt to just get an assortment to go with smear since that would be more worth it than the sandwichs in my opinion.

Yelp
After stopping at Bernstein's to satisfy my bagel craving and finding out they had sold out by noon, I drove over to Henry Higgens. They are located in the industrial area over on NE 19th and it's a very popular spot. They also sell at the Milwaukie Farmers Market and there is always a line. I'd been here before so decided to give their bagels another try. My experience was similar to the first time, just ok. Unlike a true NY bagel that has a snap to the crust, without toasting it, with a chewy dough inside, Henry Higgins bagels are bready, similar to what you would purchase in a grocery store. It's just not my thing. Spent my first 40 years in NJ so my bagel preference is set in stone. The chive schmear was also ok, needed more chive to kick up the flavor imho. The service is great, very friendly, fast and efficient. During Covid they limit people inside to just 2 people and are following all protocols.
google avatar

Lakshmi M.

Yelp
Solid bagel spot that's fairly priced and pretty quick when it comes to getting your bagel good~ I've dropped by this place a couple times and depending on when, there is sometimes a healthy line out the door. Parking is street parking and there is plenty in this area so it shouldn't be too much of an issue. I've had just a bagel with cream cheese and a bagel sandwich in the past and both have been great. They don't skimp on cream cheese amounts or toppings so yay! The bagels themselves have the right amount of chew without being hard or tough and are definitely worth the price. If you wake up one morning and are craving a bagel, swing by! Or you can always order online/stop in for a quick pick up and avoid the line. Can you say no to bagel carbs on a rainy morning?
google avatar

Dan G.

Yelp
Henry Higgins is our favorite bagel store in Portland for many years! From the moment you walk in you get those NY bagel vibes and aromas! The staff is always friendly and efficient and keeping the line moving but it's always worth the wait! The bagel itself was perfectly chewy and had just the right amount of everything seasoning. And the cream cheese is spot on. Overall, I highly recommend them to any bagel lover out there searching for that NYC style that I grew up with.
google avatar

Julie G.

Yelp
I had a toasted Jalapeño bagel slathered with cream cheese- DELICIOUS Ice water offer with lemon slices- nice touch!

Yelp
After searching on the internet for NY-style bagels in Portland, Henry Higgins came up as a contender (although the main consensus was "don't bother trying"). My boyfriend and I decided to see for ourselves and get breakfast. We ordered half a dozen bagels and a half pound of cream cheese. For the bagels, we ordered sesame, everything, salt, and cinnamon raisin. The flavor of all of them were good, as was the texture. The size/shape missed the mark for me. I thought they were pretty flat and not nearly big/puffy enough. We also ordered drinks. My boyfriend had an almond milk latte, which was very good. I had a tea. Unfortunately, most of their teas were out of stock. They are not currently offering indoor dining at this time. Customers go inside, place their order, and wait outside until their order is ready. The cashier was friendly and everyone who worked there seemed nice. Overall, not bad food, but the search for a NY-style bagel continues.

Sapphire A.

Yelp
Ordered 2 bagels with flavored cream cheese, bagels were fine but the amount of cream cheese was so minimal it was almost nothing, just a bagel basically with a scrape of cream cheese, not even a person who likes a lot of cream cheese but basically just a dry bagel. Disappointing

Marcel S.

Yelp
When I walked in to Henry Higgins boiled baagls, I was stormed with joy, love, justice, and color. To start off the wall of color and abstract is phenomenal, next I had amazing service from this young little lad Jackson. He was so polite and generous with the cream cheese. This place should get a 10/5 if I could because they have Henry merch, their homemade focaccia, bagel dogs, and dr. Browns cream soda. It feels like I am in a one of a kind baaagl shop. LOVED IT!!!

Yelp
I would like to preface my review with: the bagel i got was AMAZING and PERFECT. an everything bagel was delicious and included salt in the everything mix. it may have been the best bagel i've had in the PNW. i absolutely recommend getting bagels from here, but i recommend getting them to-go, doing your own cream cheese, and definitely don't recommend getting iced tea or lemonade. i stopped in because my ability to get to my job was hindered, and i got a to-go bagel and beverage to improve my situation, and it did. it didn't come without a cost, however. the scallion cream cheese on my bagel - i don't doubt it was scallion cream cheese because i did see flecks of scallion in it, but it tasted like regular cream cheese (they put enough of it on it, like woooooooh, man, you don't need that much cream cheese squeezing out into the middle of the bagel). so regular cream cheese on a bagel is $4, and i paid $5 for scallion cream cheese that didn't bring scallion flavor. that's fine, i can overlook once. but the real gutpunch was the "16 oz" arnold palmer that was 12 oz of ice and 4 oz of fluid that was also $5. so, to reiterate: the bagel was absolutely delicious and amazing and i would go and get one tomorrow if i was in the area. but i'd make my own cream cheese mix and it's not worth $5 for that arnold palmer that left me thirsty. edit: it's also $1 to add a slice of tomato to your bagel. get your own tomato from the farmer's market, if you're able to.

Yelp
Living in the Pearl, we will rarely get into our car to travel on a Saturday morning for breakfast, but yesterday we made the 16 min drive to southeast Portland. We were not excited to see a line of 8 or so people around 10 am, but we joined them and went on to have literally the best Lox bagel Coming from a ex New Yorker I assure you this is a credible review of a bagel place. We ordered bagels and smears to take home and will do the drive and line soon again. Pictured is only half of the bagel
google avatar

Dave R.

Yelp
Solid bagels, chewy (boiled) bagels, good assortment, fair price, $2 Flavored cream cheese was ok, small choice of flavors and I like mine with chucks of the flavor if that makes sense? I ordered scallion cream cheese, didn't see any scallions and didn't notice flavor? $5 Son got breakfast bagel with egg cheese and bacon $9, said 7 out of 10. Latte was good, but I asked for "real" honey, maybe it was, but seemed runny and overly sweet, like a syrup? Solid place, we will definitely go again. Give it a try.

Racheal R.

Yelp
Usually pretty good spot for bagels, but got charged $3.50 for turkey on my veggie sandwich to go and they forgot it :(
google avatar

Benjamin E.

Yelp
As an East coast heeb, it took me over a decade to trust goyim for a decent bagel. After walking out on my favorite chaverim, I was in search of Portlands BEST bagel, & I believe I discovered the holy grail. Vibe of this particular location is dive-hipster mixed with synagogue caterer- LOVE. Will be back constantly
google avatar

Katie K.

Yelp
Amazing!! A bagel and cream cheese to go, a cold brew too, Henry Higgins made for the best day trip starter- and was substantial enough to get us through the most beautiful hike I've ever been on. There was a little mix up with my coffee but they fixed it no problem, will definitely be going back!

Yelp
Good bagels, good service, cute place. But why not accept Oregon Trail (food stamp) cards? Bread is food. Thanks.
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
Very great place to get breakfast. Never had cooked salmon on my bagels before but wow what a great experience! Also the lemon added a nice citrus taste to it. The bagel was super flavorful and packed with cream cheese. My boyfriend's first time having bagels with salmon and he was amazed by how good it was. It was a little on the pricey side but worth it.
google avatar

Ruchi D.

Yelp
I recommend this bagel place for a quick stop breakfast. They have many flavors of bagels and cream cheese options. The bagels themselves are more bread like then chewy but toast nicely. I would have tried a bagel sandwich in the future visits.
google avatar

Andrew A.

Yelp
Tucked in an industrial section I doubt I would have found this place on my own, thanks nextdoor.com. I don't have the sophisticated palette to know the difference between a great bagel and a good one: anything from a grocery store shelf is probably in the not so good category. However, the jalapeño one here ranks at the upper end of the range. I'm into condiments and tried a delicious one for the first time: Prosser's. Friendly service and good vibe.
google avatar

Yelp
I've been to Houston, I've been to St. Louis, and I've been to Indianapolis and wow, these bagels take the cake (I know they aren't really cake, but I can't think of a better saying). The plain cream cheese was rich in a good way and the bagel had the perfect chew. The diner style eggs on my sandwich were also a pleasant surprise. A good texture and nothing pretentious--those are Todd style eggs! I'll have to try some other bagels while I'm here this weekend, but I'm happy with my choice if this is my last bagel in PDX for now. Nice staff too! Overall, great boil but watch that door on the way out--it's heavy. On to the next edible adventure!

Jessica J.

Yelp
They got my online order wrong (I ordered a jalapeño bagel with egg, cheese, veggie sausage and tomato). I received a poppyseed bagel (I am allergic to poppyseeds!!!) and they didn't include the tomato i paid an extra $1.00 for. They also charge a service fee of $0.99 cents and couldn't even be bothered to call out our order name once it was ready--after a couple minutes of standing around after i got a text, i realized they had placed my order to the side of the counter and it was just sitting there the whole time, getting cold. What exactly does the service fee cover--the abysmal service, or getting my order wrong (which literally could have killed me). I don't mind paying fees, but i do mind paying $12.79 (plus tip--my bad!) for a breakfast sandwich that's inedible. Yeahhhh, i don't think we'll ever be back unless i'm feeling suicidal.
