16 Sick Day Delivery Standbys to Order in Portland

"When dealing with a tumultuous stomach, opting for something bland is often a safe bet. However, no one wants to be stuck eating saltines and plain toast. Enter: the salt bagel, which lands in the prime spot between comforting and inoffensive. Henry Higgins offers single bagels with butter or Earth Balance for delivery, as well as full dozens for those looking to stock up. They’re available via CCC, Uber Eats, Postmates, DoorDash, and Grubhub." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

More Doughnuts and Bagels Come to Portland - Eater Portland

"Henry Higgins opened its third location in Sellwood Saturday in the former Feastworks space on Tacoma. All the HH bagels are boiled at the Northeast 19th Street bakery, but owner Leah Orndoff, a Kettleman Bagels alum, and head baker David Barile, a Long Island native, serve all the breakfast sandwiches with fresh omelets and sausage patties, to pair with espresso or Dr Brown’s root beer in the cooler. The restaurant also serves lox or house-smoked whitefish sandwiches with open-faced tomatoes, onions, and capers." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Google
It’s the bagel that makes the sandwich, and these are great bagels. The service is efficient and friendly. The open face sandwich with chunk smoked salmon, cream cheese, etc is wonderful. We usually share one between ourselves. Seating is usually available inside or outside, or just take it home 🙂

Google
Great bagels and large variety of flavors and toppings. Got the bagel sandwich and was thoroughly satisfied. Wish the chips that came with it had more chips than air though. Overall a great spot!

Google
Didn't realize they had parking, so parked a block away. Bagel was OK, cream cheese was fairly melted as I ate it so went everywhere. Got an everything bagel with veggie cream cheese and a coffee. Service was fantastic and they even did some top notch origami on my bagel wrapper.

Google
GENEROUS with the egg on the bagel egg and cheese, the ingredients were PERFECTLY PORTIONED ! Stellar bagel to egg to cheese ratio 😁👌 always walk away stuffed The staff are super duper nice which as a server,,, I know can be EXTREMELY DIFFICULT when there is a line out the door and you’re under pressure as the shop is generally pretty busy and bustling so extra kudos to them !! 💯

Google
Henry Higgins in the best bagel shop in Portland. The breakfast sandwich always hits the spot. The Sellwood location is the cleanest, and most efficient. Whitney and the rest of the staff are always kind and professional.

Google
$5 for a bagel with schmear. Quite tasty! They taste nearly the same as Speilman’s bagels, actually. A bit less flavorful and less dense than you’d hood from an NYC style bagel, but it’s better than most.

Google
We eat here as employees/managers/owner of our local retail dispensary frequently. The team, the food, the vibes, always amazing. Henry Higgins will always be our breakfast go to. Sausage, Bacon, egg and cheese bagels for the win. We appreciate you guys so much and the Sellwood neighborhood is lucky to have you guys here.

Google
Stopped here for a pair of bagel sandwiches; menus are on the windows, with one person allowed inside at a time. Took about 10 minutes after ordering to get them, which amounted to a nice walk around the block. Both breakfast sandwiches, one with bacon and one with morning star soy patty, were pretty standard, though bagels had a nice chew and flavor. Not my favorite but would stop again if in the area.

Yelp
Bagels were delicious, coffee was hot People were friendly Restaurant was very clean My husband and I will absolutely come here again

Yelp
Love this spot! Fresh bagels, friendly staff, and easy online ordering. The inside is small with a few tables but to go orders are great. All the bagel sandwiches we got were just as we hoped - fresh, tasty, and filling

Yelp
Pre-ordered about 30 bagles. I picked them up at 11am for a noon meeting . As far as I know they were made early in the morning . When I picked them up they were just thrown in a paper bag with the top open. So these bagles were in the open air for probably at least 4 hrs. I think they could have put them in a sealed bag at least to keep them fresh. They were also an assortment and were all mixed up. We had them cut them in half so by throwing them in a large bag we could no longer tell what kind each were. Just thought they could have handled this order better.

Yelp
A once gold standard bagel is now "meh". Dry. Overbaked. Missing the springy, chewy boiled and baked vibe that true NY bagels possess. Don't get me wrong...they are good by Portland standards. But somewhere along the line (Pandemic? Supply chain? Inflation?) something changed in the quality. Oh...and the price for a baker's dozen is now $20. Am I a picky snob? Yes. Nonetheless the bagel flavors and selection and service are all good. I just wish the halcyon days of true boiled bagels that the tasted great fresh would return. I'll just freeze them and reconstitute them and lightly toast them and remember the good old days...in New York

Yelp
after spending 4 years in nyc and being blessed with some of the world's tastiest bagels, it's been hard trying to find a decent bagel on the west coast. i finally paid this spot a visit and i wasn't disappointed. i ordered the sausage egg and cheese (i opted for pepper jack) with tomato, onion, ketchup, and mayo on an everything bagel. it was delicious. was it a new york bagel? no. but it was amazing nonetheless and definitely satisfied my bagel sandwich cravings.

Yelp
I did not think I would find a great bagel store. This one is wonderful great selection, great cream cheese flavors grape people working here.

Yelp
I'm always on the hunt for a bagel that tastes as good as what I've had in NYC (or ordered from there). Henry Higgins isn't quite there, but as close as I've found in Oregon so far. What they get right is the texture--when toasted, the outside is crispy while the inside stays chewy. Too many bagels around here are just regular bread in a bagel shape, but at Henry Higgins, you get that texture that makes a real bagel. I couldn't put my finger on what exactly is missing, but they taste a smidge bland like there needs to be a hint more salt or yeastiness or malt coming through. I'm being very picky, though. If you put down a platter of these bagels in front of me, I would chow down and love you for the gift. Service at this location was great. The young man who helped us was patient with us as we tried to figure out our order, and he offered helpful touches like packaging the onion bagels separate from the others. We had the bagel dog, which was good, and the green onion cream cheese, which I'd skip next time (not tangy enough and needs some salt). I didn't hate the schmear, but I didn't love it. 5 stars for great service and product relative to what else is available around. It would be 4 stars compared to that elusive NYC bagel (but at least it came with PDX friendliness). It's a little journey for us so we won't be around often, but will absolutely stock up when find ourselves nearby. I wanted to try the whitefish, but New Yorker hubby just wanted to see how they do with the bagels before trying anything else.

Yelp
Parking isn't the best but the bagels make it all worth it! This is a small location but the food here is great. My mother is from New York and she adores this place because to her it's the closest she can get to home. The food is amazing and the service is always excellent.

Yelp
Pretty decent bagels for the price, with an awesome selection of both bagels and sandwiches, plus other deli standards. Service is quick once you're inside, but getting through the line can be a bit of an ordeal, depending on when you arrive. Might be best to order ahead and grab and go, if you know what you're looking for. Other than that, definitely a solid recommendation for a great bagel shop in Sellwood.

Yelp
The boiled bagels here are truly the best I have ever had. They are perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft in the middle -- the way a bagel should be! I also love the huge amount of cream cheese they schmear on those bagels too! It is always busy, especially on a weekend morning, so I suggest calling in ahead of time and picking them up later. Whenever I'm in the Portland area, I always make time for a Henry Higgins stop.

Justin K.

Yelp
I got a corned beef bagel sandwich from DoorDash. It should sauerkraut on it so I got it since I love sauerkraut. When it arrived, there was no kraut on the sandwich and all it was was soft, almost raw like corn beef, dirty tasting lettuce, and a slimy tomato. I didn't eat the sandwich, requested a refund and will never eat from this place again. Disgusting

Yelp
Like others I am a little confused with the "boilied bagels" title. Aren't they all?! Perhaps they adore alliteration? Anyway, loved this place. Went a week ago and they are still taking COVID protocalls seriously. No indoor seating but there is a table outside. The bagels are huge and delicious. I LOVE all the veggie options. I got a veg. sausage, egg and cream cheese sammy and it was awesome. Their options are great and it tastes so fresh and homemade. Super sweet staff.

Yelp
We tried Henry Higgins Bagels today for the first time, and I can say this will now be my go to Saturday morning breakfast place. We tried the jalapeño bagel and the everything bagels and this is the way bagels are supposed to taste. They are fresh unlike other bagel chains. Their cream cheese is also very good and fresh - had the jalapeño and also scallion. I'll be back for sure!!
google avatar

Allison M.

Yelp
Great Bagels. They're a little on the expensive side but I love their choice of bagels and spreads... the earlier you go the better. I am so glad that a place close by me has whitefish salad spread. So delicious and brings me back to my Jewish roots. Yum! I like the Sellwood location better than the NE one. I've gotten friendlier service here. If you're looking for a good bagel to satisfy your cravings I highly recommend this spot.

Yelp
The bagels are okay, solid for the most part. I've been coming here for maybe a year at this point. I've never had a bad bagel here, but again they are not amazing or spectacular. But today was my last time coming in. I've noticed more and more as I come in that the floors are absolutely disgusting. Like littered with dirt and filth and bagel crumbs. The grime covers the entire floor. In addition, and not sure if this is a result of the dirty floors or the bagels they leave out, but there are flies everywhere. Buzzing around, landing on your shoulder as you walk in. Not sure why they would risk losing business by not keeping their shop clean, but it's a deal breaker for me.

Yelp
I called ahead to see if they had pumpernickel bagels for a belated Mother's Day celebration. Not only did they have them, they offered to put aside a bakers dozen for me to pick up. They were delicious, and my NY born and raised wife gave them a thumbs up. This will be our new bagel place !
google avatar

William S.

Yelp
These are grade "A" bagels, not the things that you find in grocery stores, that are soft, & tasteless. The place is small, but service is good. It's the only place we go for our bagels for home use, or, have them make up a sandwich right on premise to eat there with one of their available beverages. No beer, sorry
google avatar

Carmen C.

Yelp
Tasty fresh bagels. Their bagel breakfast sandwiches were tasty and we also loved the blue l berry bagel with cream cheese.
google avatar

Riddhi M.

Yelp
Nice hole in the wall, no nonsense bagel spot. Good spot to pick up a quick bagel for the day (there's very limited seating inside). They had a good variety of bagels & schmears. We got the onion & the tomato herb bagels. the onion bagel was good but we weren't a fan of the tomato herb. We got the roasted poblano schmear which was tasty but really runny from the heat of the roasted bagel.

Yelp
Just enjoyed a deeeelllliiious bagel sandwich to go from this local walk up bagel shop. We actually sat outside and enjoyed our orders. Super friendly staff with fresh bagels and excellent ingredients. I devoured the Rachel bagel which had corn beef, cole slaw and women topping that married all toppings into a sumptuous lunch! Will order again.

Yelp
They are still operating unnecessarily under 2021 style COVID resurgence rules. It's depressing to go in and see everyone in masks, blockades forcing you to keep a distance, a posted limit of 3 parties inside, and no indoor seating. The bagels aren't the quality I remember from a few years ago when we frequented this location weekly. Very sad. Just one more nail in the coffin of what used to be a vibrant and livable Portland.

Cassandra C.

Yelp
Went a few weeks ago and they got my order wrong. It was still good though. So I went again just to get a bag of bagels to go. It's pretty rough seeing the "sold out" sign when they also have piles and piles of bagels on the counter. The sign on the door saying they're open til 3 doesn't help things. I may still come back only because there are so few places to get boiled bagels.
google avatar

Yelp
It's my happy place. Breakfast place. My I want to hang out and look out the window place. My options for everyone place. It's just not big enough. Wake up people that like bagels go here and keep this place open. Save the bagel. Those grotesque looking things baked at Safeway and Grand Central are not bagels. Bagels are boiled. They are chewy and tough. Soft and crunchy. Then you top them with schmeer not cream cheese. Oh heaven though art Henry Higgins Boiled Bagels. Add an egg add a protein...now that's breakfast. No Mc size about it. Same thing for sandwiches. Stack it high he your breadth and say o my. Various treats and delights for dessert. Plenty of selection of drinks including non burnt Coffee. (My jab at S Buck). They have real coffee mugs just like Grand mom used to have. Free refills I mean what do they have to do to get you in here and at least try it? Their own parking, however that's usually full from the Columbia outlet people. Street parking is available only during certain times. Be prepared to walk a little. It is an intimate place but for a one or two person stop it's a pleasure. Hopefully I have done my duty and you will try it or take some bagels to go.

Yelp
I enjoy getting the everything bagel with cream cheese and an egg very delicious! Also the chai is very good!
google avatar

Bob K.

Yelp
Great bagel spot. Local and cool. Lots of variety and quick / efficient. They have a one person in the place covid policy which is fine if at times awkward so be prepared to wait on the sidewalk. Worth it.

Yelp
I'll say it right up front, loud and proud, I am Jewish and I am a bagel snob! Now, being Jewish isn't a prerequisite to obtaining bagel snobbery, but it helps. I think it's a DNA thing. I approach a new bagel shop with extreme skepticism, you can call it looking on the dark side, but I call it a survival mechanism. I walk in and I better get hit square in the face with amazing aroma. I need to see people in there really enjoying what they ordered. I need to see happy workers behind the counter. Henry Higgins ticked all the boxes. The Wife and I ordered different bagels and different schmeers to compare. She had coffee, which she said was very good. I opted for some water. Our order came out nice and quick, toasted perfectly and good amount of schmeer without being overloaded like they are hiding something. I had the everything bagel with plain schmeer, The Wife had onion with a lox schmeer. Both were excellent, chewy, full of flavor and entirely enjoyable. My skepticism melted away with every bite. It is a small place, not a lot of room to sit but our party of three did get a table right away. There is water available and you refill your own coffee if you get the fresh brewed. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We had to get a half dozen on the way out the door, and lucky for us those guys behind the counter can't count because they gave us eight bagels. Warms a Jews heart!

Sorin G.

Yelp
I'm a transplanted Bagels and lox every Sunday NYer and am a big fan of HH's bagels, but they make me sleepy. no other bagel or bread product has that effect on me. am I the only one?
google avatar

Jules T.

Yelp
This is my new favorite bagel shop! I've tried a few different types (onion, garlic, everything, and cinnamon raisin) and they are all amazing. I usually get the morning sandwich (which I've tried with a variety of meats and cheeses -- all good!) My only complaint is that I wish I could get my egg over medium. I was so excited to try the bagel dog, but I ended up feeling a bit disappointed in the flavor of the hot dog itself. It almost tasted like there was dill relish IN the hot dog. I don;t hate relish, but I wouldn't choose it in/on a bagel dog, so that was off-putting for me personally. But I'd eat a bagel (sandwich or schmeared) here any time! Thanks for coming to Sellwood, Henry Higgins!
google avatar

Benjamin C.

Yelp
Really good bagels. My favorite is to get the egg cheese and meat bagel with cream cheese as well. So good!
google avatar

Jace P.

Yelp
Amazing bagels and spreads - the best in Portland! Most bagel shops either have good bagels or good spreads, but rarely do they do both well. HH is the exception !

Yelp
I've ordered from here through a third party food delivery service. Previously, they've done a great job with my order. Food was always prepared within the estimated time given to me by the food delivery app. The bagels arrived a little cold, but that's to be expected during the drive to and from the place. I paid extra for extra toppings/additions, but it doesn't look like they added extra toppings and instead just put their standard amount of additions. I paid an extra $9 (for each bagel I purchased) for these extra add ons. Recently, I purchased four bagels and they messed up every single one. They were out of the bagels I liked. I understand that this isn't in their control, but they did not try and contact me or my driver to tell me they were out of the kind of bagels I ordered. Instead they just put a different kind of bagel in its place. I paid the high food delivery prices, paid for the extra add ons and left a decent tip only to have them mess up four bagels. I had to throw them all out which was a waste of food, time and money. I give them three stars because they did okay on my previous orders. Again, I know running out of a type of bagel isn't their fault, but they could have contacted me to ask if it was okay to use a substitute. They did not, and when I went through the food delivery app customer service, I got less than half of what I paid as a refund.
google avatar

Tim R.

Yelp
Henry Higgins is probably the closest thing to "New York Bagels" in Portland and is my favorite bagel spot here. They have a nice assortment of bagel flavors. I usually get the everything bagel. They also have a few cream cheese spreads, I like the vegetable spread the most. So great to have this new location in SE Portland. I don't have to venture out far to get my bagel fix.
google avatar

Jaspey L.

Yelp
I was pleasantly surprised to find a bagel could actually be soft and enjoyable! These have to be the best bagels ever!!

Hannah D.

Yelp
My favorite bagel spot in Oregon. I'm from the East Coast and these bagels are great. Along with the cream cheese selection. Totally worth coming to.
google avatar

Alycia H.

Yelp
Okay bagel shop, the staff is friendly but honestly the bagels aren't super great, they can get tough really fast. Good flavor selection but I prefer going elsewhere for my bagels.

Jacob S.

Yelp
It's really kind of surprising that many people think "all bagels are boiled." The vast majority are just steamed, and these are basically just circle bread. I consider these to be fake bagels. Henry Higgins has real boiled bagels, and it makes a world of difference in terms of texture and taste. HH bagels have the delicious taste of real bagels and they offer a wide variety of delicious flavors. I sure wish they were closer to me, but that's not their fault. For bagels this good, it is worth the trip.
google avatar

Cameron B.

Yelp
Very disrespectful and poor attitude from the young lady that worked with glasses on I went in there on this Wednesday morning the gentleman working behind making the bagels was absolutely excellent however the lady doing customer service had a bad attitude and was very unwelcoming. Then I called back to get her name To be able to discuss with the owners her attitude and she was very rude on the phone and hung up on me and refuse to give me her name because she realized that she was facing repercussions for her bad behavior
google avatar

Brian R.

Yelp
Grabbed some breakfast sandwiches here. They are only allowing one person in to order at a time for COVID and then they bring your food out to you. Food came out relatively fast. Were probably 3rd in line when we arrived and a few people were waiting for food. Nothing special, but I'd get breakfast here again if I was looking for takeout breakfast.
google avatar

Yelp
There are certain places that have just 'nailed it', and Henry Higgins in Sellwood is one of them. I've been coming almost every Saturday for two years and the combination of high quality bagels and a quick/friendly staff makes this a go-to spot for our family. I'm a huge fan of their Everything Bagel (w Scallion cream cheese- YUM) and my boys love their Sesame Seed Bagels. Their sausage/egg/cheese breakfast sandwich is delightful when you need your breakfast to pack additional punch. If you have kiddos this is a great spot to hang out out/connect, nosh some bagels and they even have a small bin of toys/books in back. Pro-tip: in that bin they have a PNW kids book classic "Wheedle On The Needle", it's a fun read over bagels and a warm cup of joe. Moral of the Story: When our Saturday includes Henry Higgins it's always better...if you've never been, you need to go!
google avatar

Shelby D.

Yelp
Our go-to bagel shop in Portland! The staff members are super friendly, they have all of the traditional bagel options (sandwiches included), and they always have our order ready on time (we usually call ahead). I personally appreciate the vegan cream cheese option (tofutti). I only wish they also offered vegan breakfast sandwich options like Speilman's does. Overall would recommend!
google avatar

Matt G.

Yelp
I eat one every day. The people are nice and at least at the Sellwood location they don't run out too early.
google avatar

Rosie D.

Yelp
This place is hit or miss. My first time here the bagel was perfect and I could t wait to have another. Came back a second time, ordered the same thing, and when I got back to my office the bagel was burnt with not nearly enough cream cheese. Been a few times since I work down the street. Prices are very fair. And the girls there are always friendly. I just wish they were consistent. I am not yet writing them off but because bagels are such a simple and straight forward item to serve up it does bother me a tad.
google avatar

Caitlyn S.

Yelp
Lox bagel is AMAZING -- even my husband (who is weird about eating fish and especially salmon) loved it and ate the entire thing. Reasonably priced and the staff was sweet and helpful. Worth standing in the rain for 5 mins (only downside).
google avatar

Brittany W.

Yelp
First time Trying boiled bagels and I most certainly was not disappointed! The shmears were delicious and so was that slightly crunchy outside with a chewy inside. I'll be back!
google avatar

Merrie H.

Yelp
I loved my egg and cheese on a jalapeño bagel! It was spicy without going overboard. There was not a shortage of egg and it tasted very fresh, not like a fast food place! I got the Dr. Brown's root beer which unfortunately has high fructose corn syrup but delicious of course. The staff were so friendly and had the food ready fast!
google avatar

Sarah G.

Yelp
Amazing first time experience. Bagels were fresh and tasty, service quick and friendly. I had been craving a bag with jalapeno cream cheese and they did not disappoint. I had the sundries tomato veggie bagel toasted with jalapeno cream cheese and my boyfriend had the everything bagel with regular cream cheese. Would definitely go again!
google avatar

Awmber M.

Yelp
Always high quality. Doing good hard work during covid to keep orders moving quick and efficient. Love the lox bagel, and thankful have non-dairy options.
google avatar

Marilyn C.

Yelp
No cheese! I asked for cream cheese so instead i got no cheese. So my bagel sandwich was dry. Today was pretty busy so the wait time was long but that's expected on a Sunday. They could be more efficient when handling their customers as the line grew and that place is pretty small.
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
4 stars for the previous times I've eaten here, today was ridiculous. Seems like everyone working was having a bad day, and I'm sorry for whatever they're dealing with, but it shouldn't change the way customers are treated.
google avatar

Tyler C.

Yelp
I come here a lot because the food is always hella tasty. The staff is awesome with fast friendly service every time. When I try something new I am always delighted. No complaints on any aspect. Also the music is always good although more 1980's hip hop would not hurt my feelings. And speaking of feelings, if you're looking for a restaurant to wait on you hand and foot and cater to your every need try someplace with a $40 price point. Not a bagel shop. Also if you're trying to make special arrangements for pick up, no one cares that your child has a birthday party Karen, get there in a reasonable amount of time for pickup. Also as someone that has worked in the service industry, we all know what "finding hair in your food" is all about. It means you were an entitled, self-important dink that didn't have any legitimate complains so made something up to leave a bad review. I'm done now. In short great bagels and people. To hell with the haters.
