"Food nerds can clash over the best city for al pastor or birria, but San Antonio is the undisputed heavyweight champ of at least one of the taco’s many forms. Henry Lopez hails from the first family of puffy tacos — his brothers Ray and Arturo are the OGs that made Ray’s Drive Inn a venerable name. But leave it to a younger sibling to refine the legacy at this Leon Valley restaurant. His puffy taco version is the hardest hitter, a brittle-crisp burst unencumbered by excess oil. Takeout orders can be placed in person or online; there are indoor dine-in services." - Brandon Watson

We were visiting San Antonio after experiencing a horrible hurricane back home in Florida, feeling stressed and overwhelmed. Stopping by Henry’s Puffy Tacos was the best decision we made! From the moment we walked in, Brie at the front made us feel welcome and cared for. She immediately ensured that the cooks were informed about my shellfish allergy, which gave us so much peace of mind. Brie also took the time to explain the menu and offered fun, polite, and positive vibes throughout our entire visit. It felt like being at home with family, and her food recommendations were spot on! Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious, and the exceptional service made it an unforgettable experience. Thank you, Brie and the entire team, for turning a stressful day into a joyful memory! If you're ever in San Antonio, don’t miss out on Henry’s Puffy Tacos – it’s a must-visit!

Service was amazing. Not a fan of the guac. It was not made in house and was sort of melted if that makes sense. It was also in a very small cup. I thought I ordered it as an app. The tacos were okay but kind of soggy and stuffed with lettuce. I added sour cream and was given just a small dot on each taco. The atmosphere was nice.

This restaurant reminded me of how most SA restaurants used to be; welcoming, lively, clean, and fun. My husband and I ate here for our first time and it was a pleasant experience from the moment we walked in. Service was excellent, people actually smiling and enjoying their day! The food was delicious, be sure to order their puffy tacos 🌮 Can’t wait to go back and take our parents. Thank you so much to this restaurant for a great meal and atmosphere. 10/10.

The food was amazing. We hadn't been here in years. The tea was addictive...it was so good. The waitress (Maricela) was outstanding. We will definitely be back

Came for the first time. Waiter was OK. Very ice about celebrating my daughter's birthday. The hostess was very nice in seating us. The inide was almost a western look. They had many TVs (all sports). They played Tejano music, lots of old Tejano music. (That was 1 of my likes). Food was very good. Good size parking lot. There was a funny picture board in front. (You should try it. ) over all experience: 👍.

Google
The salsa was surprisingly spicy, so make sure you have your drink before you eat it if you have a low tolerance for that kind of thing. The puffy tacos were great, they were fried corn tortillas with your choice of filling. The tortilla shells were a little crunchy but had a nice chewy texture still. Service was great, seating was adequate, and everyone seemed very friendly. If you are in town and like Tex-Amex style food, definitely heck this one out.

Wow - I never had puffy tacos before and these were AMAZING. We came to Texas for just the weekend and I plan on going to Henry’s again before we leave 😭. Craving them right now 😔 the raspberry margarita was also yummy!

Yelp
Food was good we would go again wait was not long crowded but service was alright would recommend for families

Yelp
I didn't eat in this location but we did have it delivered to us by family members. So glad they brought it!! The puffy taco was so good in my opinion. I ate it all. Never heard or seen anything like this but glad I came across it and suggested my family to bring it over. Definitely trying it again on our next visit to Texas

Yelp
We've heard a lot about these puffy tacos and finally decided to give them a try. Can't miss it...signage was pretty clear and parking was plentiful, front and back. There's also a fun cartoonish photo op near the front entrance. Greeter was going to seat us smack in front of the kitchen, but looking around there were plenty of tables free! so we asked if we could sit in a booth. So odd... seating should be prioritized from desirable first, then undesirable last. Our server was sweet, and seemed new. There was a little mix up with our margaritas , but no biggie. Complimentary chips and salsa- chips were fresh and unsalted. We enjoyed the red salsa- it had a nice kick so I used it to top my tacos for extra flavor. Menu was huge, but being our first time here, we ordered what they're known for- puffy tacos! I ordered the 3 puffy taco plate and it was more than enough. I chose: Guac puffy taco- loved it! I'm a guac lover and this had a good amount. Spicy fajita chicken puffy taco- not much flavor. Skimpy amount of chicken- I honestly didn't taste anything. Piccadillo puffy taco- my fave! Seasoned ground beef - loads of flavor. The puffy taco shell, I assume are fried, but they were light and crispy, best to be eaten right away. Tacos were topped with lettuce and diced tomatoes, I chose to have them without cheese. Came with rice and I chose charro beans- good. Our tummys were full.

Yelp
Came in on a Friday night. With a group of about 12 people. They got us sat fairly quick. This was my first time so of course i had to try the puffy tacos. I got picadillo, shredded chicken and carne guisada. The flavor was so good. My husband got cheese enchiladas and said they were good and that he loved the rice. The person next to me got the spicy beef fajitas and said it had a nice flavor. He said it wasn't very spicy but it did have a decent kick. Margaritas were a little on the pricy side. My husband said the first one was good but the second tasted a little watered down.

Yelp
A San Antonio staple, whether you are visiting or a local, this place is a mandatory stop. I've been here several times over the years but most recently last night for a large family get together. Our party was over 20 and the restaurant did their best to accommodate our size. Our server was great. The food is always amazing, fresh, authentic, and flavorful. You must try the puffy tacos, I recommend the Mexican cheese plate which includes one puffy taco, two cheese enchiladas, rice, and beans. If you're over the age of 21, I highly recommend the jalapeño margarita. This adult beverage only comes in a small, because it packs a punch. Its hold the highest amount of liquor they are able to put into a single drink. Great atmosphere, clean bathrooms, lots of seating.

Carolina E.

Yelp
Love, love, love the charro beans here! Chips and salsa are always fresh, and chips are nice and crunchy. Guacamole is extra, but mine had some nice chunks of avocado and was freshly made. I had 1 chicken puffy taco, which was full of chicken, and the shredded cheese melted in the taco, making it extra tasty. I also had a picadillo puffy taco, and those are my favorites. I would have preferred a little extra lettuce and tomato, but it was still good. My server was attentive and brought everything out quickly. She kept my tea glass full and offered me a to go tea, which was awesome. It's definitely a favorite place for me. It's somewhat bustling with people, so noise is average. So many regulars here.

Yelp
Puffy Taco legends in the San Antonio area! Henry's was such a phenomenal experience! The restaurant was clean and organized and every entree I tried was just incredibly delicious and full of so much flavor! We had such a great time! For those looking for a solid Mexican restaurant that's been in business for years, Henry's is a safe bet!

Carlos L.

Yelp
Chicken Fajita plate was terrible. The fajitas were dry and looked old. The fountain area was dirty. The chips were all over the place not in the container. The floor under the chips was dirty needs to be replaced. Overall I was disappointed will not be a returning customer

Dan W.

Yelp
Ambiance: They definitely, from the server to the busboy, exhibit the stereotypical southern charm we hear about. Patience with my mom, drinks were refined, suggestions were offered, all in all felt well taken care of. Food: The puffy taco was amazing, although the shredded chicken was tastier than the ground beef. As someone who never tried it, I would say a puffy taco experience is a must for out of towers. The queso had the right amount of kick to it, but velveety and perfect for the chips. My wife liked it all, but felt the shrimp was underseasoned a tad, so just be aware. My mom downed her frozen margarita like there was no tomorrow, so if that is your drink of choice, go ahead. Overall, highly recommended for some authentic and innovative tex-mex

Renee G.

Yelp
I liked the chance to try the famous puffy tacos. Not my speed but the service was good and the quality of food was nice.

Vanessa M.

Yelp
Very delicious food service was awesome! The manager Paula was very attentive and very welcoming Great atmosphere 10/10

Michael B.

Yelp
Henry's is a San Antonio staple for a reason. They are historically one of the original founders of the puffy taco which is now in every Tex-Mex restaurant across the state. The tortilla is as light and airy as everything you could want. The meat choices are all well prepared and exactly what you would hope for in a taco of any kind. The interior looks like any other mid range nice Tex-Mex joint but has a lot going for it. The bar is full service if you don't want to wait for a table. The prices are reasonable and the food is good. Skip out on getting drinks because in that case the prices aren't worth it.

Taryn C.

Yelp
I do not have enough superlatives to describe the amazing time and food I had at Henry's. The only drawback? That I had to drive. Otherwise I would have had two of their delicious margaritas! This came highly recommended on the word of our friends from SATX. I wasn't sure what to expect, but it was worth the wait and then some. If you've never had a puffy taco...you are seriously missing out! They're these deep fried tortilla shells that are crispy and chewy at the same time. I got grilled shrimp with rice and refried beans... i cannot describe how good this was. I mean, I'm still thinking about it! And the margarita choices! I got their Bandera Rita, which is a clever take on the Mexican flag in margarita form. I don't know when I'll be back in SATX, but I can tell you for sure...I will be back here when I do return!

Yelp
We have been around six times so far and there have been some great experiences with food flavor and some not so good. A few times the taco shells were not left to sit long enough and drain the grease, so it pooled on the plate and also had some pockets of grease in the shell. This led to some soggy bottoms on the shells and there was two bites that had pockets of grease that were a disgusting taste. The other times the food has been amazing. The different meats have all been super tender and bursting with flavor while the shells have been crunchy on the outside and soft and chewy on the inside. The corn tortillas are definitely better than the flour when fried up and puffed as the corn has a nice chewy interior while the flour is just kind of bland. Service has been great every time and the waits when super busy have been no more than 20-30 minutes at most.

Christine M.

Yelp
Very sad and disappointed today. The chips were greasy, the tortillas were hard and the beef fajitas tasted a few days old.

Samantha G.

Yelp
Good food and a good price! We got the puffy taco plate with chicken and beef. The portion is huge and we had a good time. It was busy but service was good. The pineapple cilantro margarita was really good.

Jim B.

Yelp
This was another luncheon with a group of retired school teachers from Braun Station Elementary. We had a party of nine, which had to show up in full before we could be seated. This restaurant does not take reservations, which would normally rule it out as one of our venues. However, I'm glad we did not rule it out, as the food was very good. I started off with a delicious raspberry habanero margarita on the rocks. It was pricey, but I was into the idea of raspberry and habanero mixed together. It was a little sweet, but overall it was really good. I followed it with a house margarita which was just as good as the specialty one. They did not charge for chips and salsa the way some restaurants are doing since the pandemic. But, I only ate a few chips as they were awkward for me to reach where they were located. They really aren't my favorite part of eating in a restaurant anyway. In fact, I rarely evaluate a Mexican restaurant on their chips or salsa. I really like the way that, even though they have such a full menu, they allow you to design your own custom plates. I chose one picadillo, puffy taco and two picadillo enchiladas with rice and beans. I really enjoyed every bit of it. Oh, I forgot to say I had sour cream and guacamole added to the puffy taco. That really knocked it over the top. The rice and beans were exactly the way I like them, also. it didn't get too crowded, but tables were really filling up by the time we left. If you plan to go with a big group, I would recommend getting there as early as possible. I think they open at 11, and we were there by 11:15. Just remember, they won't seat you until your full party has arrived.

SD D.

Yelp
Food was great and on point. Fast service for a sit down restaurant. The chips and queso are a great start.

D A.

Yelp
We were visiting San Antonio from San Diego and had to try puffy tacos and from what I saw on YouTube this is the best spot to do it! We all got the 3 puffy tacos meal with 3 different kinds of meat . All were delicious and the bartender knows how to mix a drink!

Clarissa E.

Yelp
I don't know why I've waited so long to post a review on this staple in my family. The food is consistently delicious and in all the years we've been coming here not once have we ever had a poor experience. We've even hosted several milestone celebrations and Henry's has always been more than accommodating. Full transparency there is music playing and mariachis on the weekend so if you have any sensitivity to sound this may not be the right place for you. For me and my family Henry's is definitely where we go when we want guaranteed quality Mexican food.

Susan C.

Yelp
10/24/22 The menu is still extensive and the prices have gone up appreciably. We went by after an appointment, mid-afternoon after the lunch rush. A nice time to go. Service was great, quick and friendly. Husband had three puffy tacos with beef fajitas. Yuck, I say. A puffy taco is either shredded chicken or picadillo in my opinion. He thought the taco shells were left over from lunch. Also the meat was a little tough. Again, fajitas have no business in a puffy taco. I had the two enchilada plate with a puffy taco (picadillo). Next time I'll do the Tex-mex plate. The server said this plate is one enchilada and one puffy taco with the rice and beans. My plate was fine. Both plates were served hot. Thanks. Nothing so bad as cold Mexican food. The flour tortillas are pretty good, soft and don't get hard when they start to cook. I'd go back.

Arleth A.

Yelp
Got the bean and cheese puffy tacos! Tacos were yummy and wait time was pretty quick! Definitely trying this place again.

J ..

Yelp
The food was good the service was good but it's sort of dark inside. The food was served hot and the plate presentation was typical of Mexican food restaurants... the puffy taco shell was great and on point.... I think this spot can be a hit or miss... while it was good it wasn't great...I like it for a lunch spot it's just ok but 4 stars for that puffy taco shell... that part was great... I'm so confused... lol

Maya M.

Yelp
Customers be warned! This has to be one of the most disgusting experiences a restaurant can offer. While eating at the San Antonio establishment Henry's Puffy Tacos a relative in my party found a ROACH in her Borracho Beans!! The owner was on site but would not come out to speak with her and instead the waitress had to apologize for him. What a way to treat your customers. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone

Juanita M.

Yelp
its always on point here at henrys the food the drinks the music and the service its always perfect thank u

MsNina78249 ..

Yelp
the service at this place just keeps getting worse. this is what a $5 taco looks like....pathetic!

Jessica J.

Yelp
Was in San Antonio and you can't not get Puffy Tacos while In Town. They were so good and the service was awesome. Everyone so sweet.

Robert B.

Yelp
I love puffy tacos, so this place gets 5 stars. Hard to find them anywhere but SA. Rice and beans were great also.

Scott B.

Yelp
Food is wonderful The service fast and polite A wonderful feeling here with first class Devore

Joseph B.

Yelp
Had a great experience dining in at Henry's for my first time during my visit to SA! The margaritas were amazing. I had 3 of the Puffy tacos including the carne guisada, spicy beef fajita, and ground beef! Was barely able to finish and the quality was top notch. Eddie was a great server and made the meal enjoyable with his recommendations and attentiveness. Definitely will recommend to others and look forward to visiting again when I'm back in San Antonio!

Joshua M.

Yelp
Overall score 2.2 out of 5 I had the chicken fajita tacos. They tasted OK, but definitely overhyped. Staff was friendly and great service.

JoAnna L.

Yelp
Best Cheese Enchiladas in town!! Great service and family friendly!!! I've been coming here for 30 plus years and discovered it since I was enrolled at St. Mary's University. Students and our professors would walk to the original one around the corner from St. Mary's. Always consistent! Original owners too! They ensure everything is done right!!

Lisa P.

Yelp
Never even heard of a puffy taco! Was it ever good! The texture, the flavor, the creativity! Just wow! Nothing like complimentary house chips and spicy salsa to get the party started. The staff was amazing; very friendly and attentive. Nice and cozy establishment, great for crowds and perfect for families.

Thomas C.

Yelp
The food was not fresh, tortillas were stale on the puffies.. and they were very small! La Fiesta patio Café on Pat Booker Road has been doing it longer and better biggerand fresher! Hey Henry...You should change your name to "stale little tacos" maybe go get a job there in the real kitchen and learn how to do it right? I was told by the alleged manager to come back in and give him a second chance and he would make it right, so when I did, two weeks later, they treated me like I was trying to rip them off for a taco plate, and refused to make it right... so now I've been insulted, disrespected, and ripped off. When I asked to speak to the owner she told me ..That was from Henry's mouth.

Michelle S.

Yelp
I have tried their 2 locations and the one on Bandera is way better. The other in Woodlawn not very good. The taco didn't taste fresh today nor was it hot. It wasn't as crunchy and things just seemed off. Service was ok and ambiance was good. Food was ok not great. The margaritas I had was great. Good not good!

Don J.

Yelp
Henry's namesake puffy tacos, a San Antonio institution, are definitely worth a try, although not sure I get what all the fuss is about. I got the Tex Mex plate, which includes a puffy taco and enchilada of your choice. My puffy taco shell split at its soggy bottom, making it difficult to handle, and the picadillo filling was nothing special. I actually enjoyed the cheese enchilada with ancho chile sauce more. I usually skip the Mexican rice, but Henry's version, mixed with melted cheese, was wonderfully rich and enjoyable. There's probably a margarita on the menu for you - my favorite is the jalapeño margarita. Dining room is festively decorated and usually bustling.

Ashley W.

Yelp
I was super excited to try this place, but it was disappointing. I think it's like an Olive Garden, where lots of families go, but the food is okay. The puffy tacos had a nice crunchy shell , but the filling had no flavor (besides the natural flavor of the ingredients). I even tried the fried fish taco. And the fried fish only added texture, no addition to flavor. I'm not a picky eater, but I wish they had salted it more or aded more flavor in the fillings or even included a better salsa/sauce. For $4 per taco, the filling was very average. I put the tartar like sauce on the fish taco, but it still didn't add much. I also tried the carne guisada and chicken enchilada puffy tacos. The meats had no flavor. I could get more flavor at home if I just added salt and some taco seasoning (or literally any other seasoning). The service was nice and we got seated quickly on a Friday evening for a table of 10.

Bernie L.

Yelp
Henry's has a great infectious energy and atmosphere. The minute you enter you feel an energetic vibe floating around. It could be the amazing strawberry margaritas that you can order while you're waiting for a table. The portions are generous and everything is yummy. The puffy tacos are as delicious as one might hear. The carne guisada is lean and tender. The rice and beans are traditionally made and great in a fluffy flour tortilla. The chips and salsa is quite Gus. The service is expedient and quite friendly. Can't wait to go back and try different dishes and different drinks.

Liz W.

Yelp
This was our first stop in San Antonio and what a great pick it was! I did not realize that Henry from Henry's Puffy Taco is one of the inventors of puffy tacos! All the tacos were great, but the picadillo was my favorite. Service was quick, they brought out chips and salsa as soon as we sat down the salsa verde is nice and spicy and the salsa roja is tasty, I found a perfect balance to add to my tacos by mixing them together. I also got a jalapeño margarita which was delicious, has a nice jalapeño kick, and was perfectly boozy. Can't wait to come back!

Ben P.

Yelp
So we're from Calif, SF area. Plenty of decent Mexican grub - also Salvadorean, Guatemalan, Honduran, y lo del Sud America. Puffy tacos sounded like a fun gimmick. The kids liked them. I had enchiladas de pollo w original adobe sauce. We had a Chile relleno to share. They don't know how to make that one. Honestly, the food is all well seasoned: rice, charro beans, main dishes. The salsa for dipping with the chips is a tad bland. But the awesome variety and our high-energy server -BREANNA - made it for us. She was so cool. Got our smoothies going & on the table quick ( Needed that brain freeze - it's 107 outside.) Fill up our empty water bottles? - no problem! Get all of our order, get all the details right, get it turned in pronto? She's on it. We were eating in less time than any other place we've been at. I get how people do demeaning comparisons (it's like Olive Garden) but I don't think that's deserved really. But I'm just getting used to Tex and Tex Mex food, and the bar on food quality is a lot higher than in CA. For us, it was such a pleasant experience, and the food really hit the spot. So I rate on overall experience. A solid 4. And that's BREANNA, with 2 n's. She's a solid 5. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Marie S.

Yelp
I can see why everyone says you need to try the O.G for Puffy Taco's to get the full experience. Having had puffy tacos at other places, they can't quite get them as perfect as they are at Henry's. You will notice that they are less greasy here, and a thicker shell. They tend to actually stay together and not get mushy, something that other places can't quite duplicate. The staff is also really friendly and the service is fast. Food is delicious! I will be back.

Disney S.

Yelp
Years ago, I was told that puffy tacos were a thing in San Antonio and after some research, I saw that Henry's Puffy Tacos was the place to try it. I've been here a few times now and have only ever ordered puffy tacos and they're amazing. The two puffy taco plate leaves me full, but I made the mistake of ordering three once and felt like I needed to be rolled home. They're ok as leftovers, but they're best when they come out of the kitchen (sounds obvious, I know). The other thing I loved about this place...free chips and salsa right as you sit down!

Jeanette V.

Yelp
We stopped here for the puffy tacos. We arrived right before lunch time on a Saturday morning and we didn't have to wait. Shortly after we saw more and more people arriving and have to sit and wait for a table. Place is a good size, lots of seating available. Our waitress was so nice and helpful with suggestions. We ordered puffy tacos, queso and tried the charro beans. Everything was good, maybe a tad bit salty for my personal liking. However, food had flavor and textures were all there, pricing was also decent.

Sarah-Lorraine L.

Yelp
WHY WE WENT HERE: - the food adventure for our trip with just myself and the SO was to get some Tex Mex food with a specific mission for puffy tacos - we initially went to the Woodlawn Ave location, but it was closed for the Labor Day holiday so we went to the Bandera Rd location instead THE LOOK (ON THE OUTSIDE): - located in a plaza off of W Woodlawn Ave and Duke Ave - exterior signage gives a diner vibe THE LOOK (ON THE INSIDE): - inside gives family/group friendly vibes THE MENU: - beverages - breakfast tacos - breakfast plates - appetizers - soup/salad - burritos & bowls - Tex-Mex favorites - create your own - from the grill - seafood - chicken fried chicken - child plates - beverages - cerveza - bandera rita - margaritas - specialty - pina coladas - tequila - desserts WHAT WE ORDERED: - puffy tacos: picadillo, shredded chicken, carne guisada, spicy beef fajita, spicy chicken fajita - side of guacamole - side of sour cream - side of chili verde THE TASTE: - the puffy tacos were GOOD! definitely didn't need any of the condiment sides - the "spicy" fajita options weren't spicy at all (and I'm for the most part spice intolerant) - the beef options were definitely way better than the chicken ones CUSTOMER SERVICE: - lagged, but when he was there it was all good

Sylvia L.

Yelp
Not the best service..unhappy waitress . Felt really uncomfortable. Food was C-, and I can rate a puffy taco. Hadn't been in years, now I remember why.

Edwyn A.

Yelp
After living in Texas and nearby in Austin for some time I finally decided to try puffy tacos and am now a convert. We just don't have these in Austin so I guess I'll have to stop here every time I'm in the San Antonio area. They are just so puffy :-) The texture is just something you have to try. I opted for 2 instead of 3 and it was just enough. You can choose the fillings so I went with picadillo and carne guisada I'm a fan of of the guisada as it had a nice beefy gravy so it was a nice contrast to the puffy texture. Be sure to eat these while they are still hot since they kind of get mushy if you don't. It comes with rice and beans. The soup beans had a nice taste and there were bacon slices though I'm more of a fan of more fatty pork in my charro. The rice was seasoned well but maybe a bit too much to mix with the beans. As for finding this place it's pretty much near 410 so it isn't hard to get to. There was parking at the back at noon though I can tell this place might get busier at night.

Ruby S.

Yelp
Made a stop while in town to try puffy tacos and this place didn't disappoint! Short wait on a Tuesday night. Service was good, attentive! The chips were good and crispy & the salsa was pretty good, very tomato pasty but also had some spice! My husband got the chicken tortilla soup and they poured the broth over the chicken & tomatoes at the table which was really awesome. It tasted great. We also really enjoyed the puffy tacos! I preferred the Carne Guisada to the chicken but both were good! Next time I'd try to spicy chicken instead! Overall this place did not disappoint for our first dinner in town!

M N.

Yelp
I heard puffy tacos were all the rave here in town. I even googled and it looked very interesting. How does it puff? Why does it puff? The most important question, how does it taste? It's a nice new way to bring yet another taco to my mouth. Air consistency topped with meats and veggies. I thoroughly enjoyed it and wouldn't mind coming back again. Hot food and great service, I never needed to flag anyone down, the server/ bartender was pretty much on it. This location is spacious, lively, and has festive decor. Full tables on their way to full bellies. The parking is decent too, but it can get crowded. If you live around here, I'm sure you have already heard about this place if not already tried this establishment. But, if you're not, why not? It's yum and puffy!

Came here for the infamous puffy tacos!! Pretty good but very greasy haha the puffy taco shell didn't taste fresh either. Loved the service tho. We learned that Selena ate here
