The Best New Bars Around D.C. Right Now | Eater DC

"Adams Morgan’s iconic “18th and U” address made an anticipated comeback in November with renewed energy, colorful cocktails, and a Beyonce-themed bathroom. The LGBTQ-friendly reboot offers everything from comfort food favorites to Bravo-viewing parties and lively weekend brunches flowing with bubbly beverages. Behind the bar, Her Diner shakes up fruit-forward crushes as well as twists on classics that include a dill pickle brine martini, a Hugo spritz, and a fig vodka mule. A Beloved Taco Spot Lands in a Virginia Brewery — And More November Openings Around D.C. | Eater DC

"The iconic “18th and U” address reopened as a renewed, eye-popping diner filled with colorful cocktails, neon, and a Beyonce-themed bathroom, positioning itself as an inclusive neighborhood space for comfort food, Bravo-viewing parties, and lively weekend brunches. The restaurant is the brainchild of Kelly Laczko, who makes her debut as an owner and operator after ten years as general manager for the space’s previous occupant. The opening menu balances nostalgic items like meatloaf and pigs in a blanket with fresh additions such as gratis pickles from local business Gordy’s Pickle Jar; choices include breakfast-for-dinner dishes like French toast or a breakfast burrito and the return of milkshakes. Behind the bar, the late-night diner shakes up fruit-forward crushes as well as twists on classics that include a dill pickle brine martini, a Hugo spritz, and a fig vodka mule. Laczko, who says she loves a theme, also plans to rotate cocktails with the season." - Emily Venezky

Inside Her Diner, D.C.’s New Neon-Hued Spot for Crushes and Comfort Food | Eater DC

"Reopening tomorrow at Adams Morgan's iconic "18th and U" address (2004 18th Street NW), the space returns with renewed energy, colorful cocktails, and a Beyonce-themed bathroom. It is the brainchild of Kelly Laczko, who makes her debut as an owner and operator after spending 10 years as general manager for the space’s previous occupant, Duplex Diner; Laczko says she hired back a majority of the old team, the chef included. "The amount of neighborhood support that I’ve been receiving over the past few months has been crazy," she says. The opening menu balances nostalgia with fresh items and ideas: "I wouldn’t dare take away some of the classics," Laczko says. "The meatloaf wasn’t going anywhere, the pigs in a blanket weren’t going anywhere." Choices include breakfast-for-dinner dishes like French toast or a breakfast burrito, the return of milkshakes, and gratis pickles from local business Gordy’s Pickle Jar—"When you sit, instead of bread you’re going to get pickles," she says. Behind the bar are fruit-forward crushes and twists on classics, including a dill pickle brine martini, a Hugo spritz, and a fig vodka mule, with cocktails rotated seasonally. An extensive makeover by designer Joseph Ireland makes the dining room "lighter and brighter" with pops of neon pink, yellow, and green; updated TVs and audio equipment support Bravo-viewing parties and lively weekend brunches flowing with bubbly beverages. The old marquee now sits indoors above the service station while bold new lettering marks the exterior, and the bathrooms received a celebrity facelift—one all things Madonna and another dedicated to Beyonce. The restaurant will be open for dinner daily and weekend brunch to start, with weekly specials and happy hour deals in the works; Laczko emphasizes cultivating a community where everyone can feel safe and welcome: "It’s a neighborhood space as well as a queer space," she says. "You can spend an hour here or you can spend five hours here. I want the vibe to be exactly that." - Travis Mitchell

Absolute hidden gem here in DC. I hadn’t been to Duplex in years and then found out it was gone. Then my friend said let’s go to HER diner, it’s like duplex but better, and it absolutely is. I started with the bi Felicia drink and it knocked me off my feet. That thing is strong but tasty. Highly recommend it. We split tater tots for a snack and I had the chicken burger. It was cooked well and was juice vs dry, and the buffalo sauce I got on the side was really good. The onion rings were fried to perfection. If you’re craving diner food, this is a great spot.

First, I'd love to shoutout the owner Kelly for being an amazing visionary! This place is so unique and cozy and thoughtfulness of the design details speaks to the heart of the owner. Staff: amazingly friendly and very hospitable! Thank you to everyone who worked the bar, prepared the food, seated guests, or even bus tables-the work came with a smile and that a rare restaurant find. Decor: allow me to elaborate on the decor because it's a time capsule adorned with vintage pieces. The booths, the bar, the dining area-AH! I love it! But, let's acknowledge the restrooms...honey! One restroom is dedicated to THE Queen Bey and get this, when you open the doors, you'll immediately hear a Bey classic playing on the speakers inside. And if that wasn't enough to make you fangirl, I went over to the other restroom and the material girl herself, Madonna, can be heard in the speakers and seen on the wall decor. Both restrooms have so much personality! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE! Drinks: baby these bartenders didn't come to play! They are mixologist and take their craft seriously. Let's acknowledge that I originally had a reposado tequila cocktail with pineapple juice (not pictured) and it was DELICIOUS! But the star up to contend against the rest is their espresso martini...ooowee this drink didn't come to play around and I'd love to see it go up against some of the others in the District because I can see it coming out on top...it's just that good! Signed: a dedicated espresso martini drinker! Pictured but not sampled: Kelly was playing around with a few drinks and the Betty White Cosmo was a golden girl approach to a cute evening! Ask for it! Food: I ordered their wings fried hard with a side of ranch and BBQ sauce. These wings were seasoned to perfection and fried perfectly! Crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside (pauses as my mouth waters again) they were delectable to the bone! Is this place good for groups? ABSOLUTELY! Grab the crew and visit their happy hour which ends at 7pm. Is there parking nearby? Parking is tight but you wouldn't want to drive here anyway because the drinks are worth having a few-take a cab! Would I return? Honey, I'm planning a return as I type! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! For reaffirming that I am HER!

An absolute gem run by amazing people! Her is a favorite among regulars, welcoming and always familiar faces. I highly recommend you make a visit if you have never been. Also great events like trivia and drag shows!

If you’re looking for a warm, welcoming spot that feels like home but with a twist, HER Diner is the place to be! This casual LGBTQ+ restaurant and bar nails the perfect balance of comfort and creativity. The menu is packed with elevated comfort food that hits all the right notes. Think juicy burgers, indulgent mac and cheese, and ultimate comfort foods, meatloaf and chicken pot pie! The craft cocktails are a highlight—expertly mixed, beautifully presented, and full of bold, unique flavors. Don’t skip their signature drink… The “Squeeze” The vibe is as inclusive as it gets, with friendly, attentive staff who make everyone feel like family. Whether you’re here for a weekend brunch, a dinner date, or just drinks with friends, you’ll leave feeling like you’ve found your new favorite hangout. Highly recommend checking it out—it’s the kind of place that quickly becomes your go-to spot.

Google
“Her” diner was filled with gay boys. My wife and i were the only queer ladies in the entire place. I’m glad the gay boys are keeping this place afloat, as the world needs more sapphic spaces, but jesus. The food was good but the service was so lackluster. No one greeted us. Someone very reluctantly finally seated us. A man pissed all over the toilet seat. The tv screens were playing a mix of sports and straight movies. This place is alright, but it’s not a lesbian space. Disappointed to see it after having high hopes.

Google
I really wanted to like the food more but unfortunately it was a bit of a disappointment for me. Food was pretty bland and the coffee wasn’t that great either. For a place charging a good bit for entrees for diner food, I was unfortunately hoping it would be better. The vibes of the place were really cute though! Could be a good spot for drinks or other activities.

Google
Her is a standout, especially on a busy day. The energy is infectious, and the owners are visibly on the floor, mingling and checking in with guests—really refreshing and welcoming. Service is friendly and efficient, even with crowds, and the food is thoughtfully prepared and well-paced. A warm, lively spot that makes you feel valued. Can’t wait to come back!

Google
The food is very mediocre for the price. I was happy to support a queer owned business but won’t be back after two very mediocre meals (both dinner and brunch). The donut holes were super disappointing and when we sat outside, it was like the staff forgot about us. Had to track them down for both our apps and our check/more water. As You Are has much better food.

Yelp
Thank you David, for great service! Food was very good, atmosphere is very cute, and had a really great time out! Try the milkshake!

Yelp
Really wanted to like this place. Loved it under its previous management/ownership as Duplex Diner. Unfortunately, the service and food just did not live up to my expectations. The ambiance is cute and they did a good job with the interior, though it lost some of its previous divey charm for the sake of a more polished look. The server seemed distracted and we had to flag him down multiple times to get his attention, though he seemed to be new and in the process of getting trained. The menu was confusingly large and convoluted and the drinks were substantially overpriced, especially for being on 18th in Adams Morgan. To top it off, the food was under-seasoned and poorly executed. The pesto special was very bland (I've never known a pesto dish to be bland). The burger was overcooked, overpriced, underseasoned, and had wild proportions of red onion and what seemed to be iceberg lettuce. This is all in contrast to the phenomenal burgers nextdoor at Lucky Buns and under previous owners. Overall, overpriced, meh service, and one of the worst burgers I've had in recent memory. I hope that they can make changes to improve and I look forward to giving them a second chance once they do.

Yelp
I really wanted to like Her Diner, I really did. The vibes incredible- love the themed bathrooms and the server was super nice. But the food was such a miss, I'm hoping it was an off day for them. I think their oil wasn't hot enough for something because the chicken tenders tasted soggy and were exceptionally greasy. The fried pickles were a disappointment (4 spears for 12 dollars) because the breading kept falling off. It was nicely seasoned but it couldn't save it. Got a basket of fries for 10 dollars which was not salted and also quite sad that they weren't worth the price. I thought my friend got a salad but he got nachos which were served in a bowl with a lot of lettuce, tomatoes, and you had to search a little for the chips.

Yelp
I stopped by this place with a friend when visiting DC. It was an easy, casual space to grab a bite to eat and a drink. It's not upscale, but neither of us expected it to be. It is comfortable and satisfying---nothing more and nothing less. What was particularly appealing was its easy-to-get-to location and the transitional nature of the space. We started with dinner and drinks, which were fine, and stayed for Drag Race trivia and a drag show. The service was friendly and attentive. I wouldn't go out of my way to visit Her Diner again, but if I were nearby or someone offered it as a suggestion, I would be happy to go.

Yelp
This place was cute and definitely a fun time for weekend brunch! The prices were reasonable, staff was very friendly and the food was delicious! I tried the pancakes and the breakfast burrito and would go back just to have the breakfast burrito again! Definitely a great queer place to check out :)

Yelp
Her Diner was a total vibe with both a Beyoncé and Madonna-themed bathrooms. Walking in for lunch on a Sunday the staff was able to find a table for 5 outside for us. Generally, the staff was very kind and checked in on us multiple times authentically wanting to know how they could better serve us. The food was decent if not a bit bland. I got an omelette that sat in oil and had very plain potatoes on the side, my coworker had a quesadilla that was just fine and my other coworkers meals (2 more omelets and a burger) were fine enough.

Yelp
I went to Her Diner with a group of 11. We started with a group of 10 and they accommodated us last minute. The diner has a relaxed comfortable vibe. They have plenty of TVs in the space. I ordered the Big Gay Breakfast. The eggs were cooked perfectly and the sausage was very good. The potatoes were well cooked but under seasoned. They didn't have must taste. My wife ordered the burrito and pancakes. She replaced the meat in the burrito with potatoes. She really enjoyed her burrito. We were very surprised the diner doesn't have veggie meat options on the menu. My wife would love some Morningstar or Beyond sausage patties. They didn't have hot chocolate. I was pretty surprised at that. It's the perfect place to order a spiked hot chocolate.

Yelp
Perfect location and well needed for the area. DC didn't have a queer restraunt open before they opened. We came on "NYE Eve" and it was absolutely packed. (Love that for them). The one turn off I would say is, when we walked up and asked for a table of 2, we were met with "we don't have seating for 2 but you can sit at the bar". Thankfully there were 2 spots open (and no more). So we sat there. The hostesss was within ear shot and we continued to hear that throughout our dining experience. They apparently don't have a wait list or didn't offer it to anyone which would be a huge recommendation. The bartender was nice and the drinks were strong. They did not have top shelf liquor which made it hard to order. For example, their vodka options were stoli and sobieski and whisky options was Jim Beam and not sure the others. As for the food, they have a decent variety. We went with the chicken tendies and chicken quesadilla. Quesadilla you can't make wrong and was good. The tendies had good breading but desperately needed salt. Overall a good place to meet up with Friends.

Yelp
Servers that are not serving. We waited and waited for a waiter. Friends came by, so I gave them my awful experimental guava cosmo. The burger was ... I mean if you're right next to Lucky Buns... step up your burger. Awful. Good luck with dinner. Fun vibes
google avatar

Yelp
Her Diner is a great place for a casual and fun meal. I love that they take reservations so you'll know that you have a table. The service is always top-notch with a team of friendly servers. I've been a few times and always enjoyed the food. It's great that you can customize your burger and there are a few side options. The egg roll appetizer is fantastic. This is definitely a go-to place for me!

Yelp
My bestie and I were long time fans of Duplex Diner, the predecessor to Her Diner, so we eagerly awaited the newest incarnation of this space. It is wonderful! We went for brunch recently and it did not disappoint! Great service, drinks flowing freely, friendly vibe and a filling hearty meal - what more do you need? The new owners have given the place a nice refresh while maintaining the neighborhood diner aspect. I loved how the "Madonna bathroom" got a fabulous upgrade and they created a unique new bar design with a nod to the old Duplex. The menu is full of diner favorites and a great value amidst the pricey DC dining scene. Looking forward to many more great meals, brunches and events at Her Diner!

Yelp
Everything about this is really good. The food, atmosphere, service, etc. Definitely worth checking out and coming back to
google avatar

Yelp
Saddest little portions you will ever see, even for a "diner" in DC. Not bad food, but come on. The side of bacon is laughable
google avatar

Taylor W.

Yelp
The refresh is great and really brightened up the place. All of the most important features of Duplex remain including the mimosa pitchers, homemade donuts and most importantly The Madonna Bathroom (revamp).

Peter R.

Yelp
I wanted to like Her Diner and I may go back. But my first time there was very disappointing. It was so loud you had to yell at each other to be heard. When I asked the manager if the music at the bar could be slightly lowered he told me the owners like it this way. There is no separation between the bar and the dining room at this diner. Back when it was the 18th street diner the burgers were great- not so now. I ordered a Brie burger and the brie was simply put on the burger cold. It was not melted in anyway so the whole burger ended up cold. As I said i will give the place another chance because I think they can fix things. I hope they will because it was always a great place to go.

Emma D.

Yelp
So lackluster. Incredibly overpriced breakfast food which is justifiable if it tastes great, but it was borderline not good. Burger was bland egg on it was overcooked & breakfast burrito also had zero flavor at all. Everything we tasted on the menu was unsalted & not flavorful. Service also was pretty weak.
