A Creative Brunch Hit Expands to Chicago’s Near South Side and Six More Upcoming Restaurants | Eater Chicago

"I'm aware that Hewn, the lauded Evanston‑based bakery, will open a third North Shore outpost this fall at 964 1/2 Green Bay Road in Winnetka in a 700‑square‑foot space—its smallest storefront yet—joining its Evanston original and a Libertyville location." - Naomi Waxman

Hewn Artisan Bread - Review - Evanston - Chicago - The Infatuation

"This is a bakery in Evanston that makes some truly wonderful bread (with loaves like a pumpkin seed with rosemary, and caramelized onion rye), plus pastries like croissants and kouign-amann. But they also have a small selection of excellent sandwiches and flatbreads. It’s a great place to pick up some stuff for a picnic, even if your “picnic” involves you eating a baguette alone in your car." - Adrian Kane

HEWN Bakery has done it again! As a longtime devotee of their Evanston location, especially for their annual St. Patrick's Day Irish soda bread, I was thrilled to visit their new Winnetka store. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint. Every year, HEWN's Irish soda bread is a highlight, a pure delight that perfectly captures the warmth and comfort of traditional baking. This year, at the Winnetka shop, I not only indulged in my beloved soda bread but also discovered their incredible flavorful brown bread – a testament to HEWN’s consistent quality and mastery of rustic loaves. It was, as always, utterly satisfying. To truly embrace the festive spirit, I couldn't resist their chocolate shortbread shamrock cookies, filled with a decadent Valrhona mint ganache. These were a revelation! The rich chocolate shortbread paired perfectly with the refreshing mint, creating a delightful treat that was both beautiful and delicious. (See attached photos for a peek!) Beyond the baked goods, the Winnetka store carries a curated selection of pantry items, and I couldn't leave without their exceptional olive oil. The quality is evident, and it's a perfect complement to their breads. (Again, see photos!) I even picked up a beautiful cutting board, a testament to the thoughtful curation of items found at Hewn. As a French native, I hold bakeries to an exceptionally high standard. HEWN consistently exceeds those expectations. For me, it's not just a bakery; it's the best bakery and patisserie in the Midwest. The dedication to quality ingredients, the artistry in their baking, and the warm, welcoming atmosphere make HEWN a truly special place. Whether you're a longtime fan or a first-time visitor, you're sure to find something to love. Don't miss the chance to experience the magic of HEWN in Winnetka!

I’ve been so impressed with Hewn bakery. Everything has been incredible. The heirloom wheats are particularly delightful and I love trying out their various pastries. All are exceptional and I would recommend this bakery to anyone who appreciates quality, thoughtful and timeless ingredients.

No Smoke and Mirrors, Just Flavor ✨ This women-owned gem cuts through the noise with locally sourced and organic ingredients, naturally fermented breads and pastries that speak for themselves. They let the quality of their ingredients shine, prioritizing real flavor over sugary gimmicks. The result? An unforgettable taste experience. Take their August peach pie 🍑. It was a masterclass in simplicity: perfectly ripe peaches, balanced sweetness and acidity, a crisp, comforting crust. While the picture hints at its beauty, it can't capture the essence of flavor that made it unforgettable. Hewn is more than a bakery; it's a celebration of honest, delicious food. If you're looking for the real deal, you've found it!

The baguettes are phenomenal. Crunchy on the outside, airy and light on the inside. As it should be! Beautiful ham and cheese croissant. They don’t skimp on the ingredients. Definitely a stop on my way to work. So happy they are in the neighborhood.

Wonderful bakery serving delicious pastries and breads. Quite the addition to the Hubbard Woods business district. My wife and I stop in every time we come through Zhubbard Woods.

I love their naturally fermented Country Blonde bread. They are also known for their sandwiches and a variety of awesome baked goods. I have been to all three of their locations and the service is always excellent.

Google
Thrilled to have a bakery in town. Fresh. Amazing. AND THEY DO NOT USE SUGAR IN THEIR BREADS. Most don’t realize how much even Dave’s sliced bread has added. Pastries are amazing too - with allll the sugar :)

Wow. I can’t say I expected how cool this new Hewn location would be. We picked up a challah on Friday.. this is going to give some other area bakeries a run for their money. The kouign amann and morning bun were delicious, and somehow the chocolate croissant has survived 24 hours but will be consumed soon. Good coffee, rotating bread menu, a few other random surprises. I’m excited to have this nearby.

Yelp
I love Hewn and it's great that they've been able to expand in recent years from their original Evanston location, and I decided to head over here to try the newest outpost since they opened relatively recently. It's much larger than the Libertyville shop but smaller than the OG shop. Service was good and SUPER cheery. They had their February special kouign amann, which had a raspberry-rose filling. It was pretty good and luckily the rose was very subtle since I don't like that flavor; I just really love kouign amann. I'm not the hugest fan of their flavored ones and sometimes wish they'd go back to their original/plain ones, but this was a nice flavor. I picked up coffee today, which I've never ordered from here--just occasionally an apple cider in the fall. Actually I got a chai, and it was delicious; I picked up a chocolate strawberry latte (another February special) was very good as well as per my partner. Drinks may be part of my new order when I visit Hewn. Luke their other bakeries, it's not designed as an eat-in place; however, there is a bench or two if you want to eat before heading out. The downside to visiting the non-Central St (Evanston) location is that the outposts get all their pastries and breads delivered. That means they may not have as large a selection or may sell out more quickly, and also some things may not come until later in the day--I know they've made mention on their Insta that baguettes usually show up at like 9:30 or something. So although the Winnetka shop might be 5 minutes closer to me, I'm just as likely to head to the Evanston shop if I want something. Parking is street only, though a few blocks away the village has a parking structure for these downtown shops. The spots outside Hewn are free parking for up to 90 minutes.

Yelp
Very small store. No real space to sit town and enjoy your coffee and baked goods. This is definitely more of a to go place. Right on the main road in Winnetka downtown area. 3.5/5 $4.50 kouign aman with passion fruit - Yummy. Not the best but still yummy with nice layering to the dough. The bottom wasn't very caramelized though which is usually the best part and the top wasn't very sugary. Overall needed those two aspects to get a 5/5 2.5/5 $5.75 sticky bun. Ok. Dough was bland, needed the cinnamon ooey gooey ness within the roll. The bread was slightly dry as well. Topping was good but not enough to help the dry - ish bread or add to the lack of overall flavor. With more cinnamon ooey gooey stuff between the layers, it would have been a lot better. 2/5 $4.60 blueberry scone. Overpriced for a small sized scone. Also, where were the blueberries? It was a super bland plain scone with almost no blueberries.

Yelp
I stopped into Hewn's Winnetka Outpost last Sunday morning at 11:00am. I was greeted by a friendly staff an array of bread and goodies to choose from. There were a lot of bread choices (their specialty). I purchased a small loaf of their Blonde Country bread. I appreciate that they offer a smaller size because it's difficult to finish a big loaf of bread in a two person household. I also purchased a seeded loaf of bread. It was good, but not as seeded and flavorful and I have experienced from other bakeries. Two mini monkey breads, two lemon ginger scones and a chocolate cookie completed my purchase. I did not try them, but my husband commented that the monkey breads were dry and slightly stale. The scones were a bit on the dry side, too. The cookie was okay. Since this is one of Hewn's outposts, I wonder if the baked goods they offer on a Sunday morning are a day old from Saturday? That may explain why some of the items were dry. If the items were fresh, they would have been great, but this is why I am only giving them three stars.

Yelp
I love their other two locations, but the new Winnetka location is amazing. It's bright, clean, and filled with scrumptious homemade treats. I highly recommend. They have a nice garden walkway on the side with benches where you can sit and enjoy your wonderful pastries.

Yelp
Came just after 9a on a sat and I'd say half the bread shelf looks 30% empty. Friendly staff. We got the durano loaf which has a great sesame crust and the taste is slightly tangy and salty. Loved the ham n cheese croissant, monkey bread, blueberry scone which wasn't too sweet (thank goodness) and the kougn Amman. All delicious and fresh and no line at all. Looking forward to getting their bread regularly

Yelp
Best baked goods-- I am very particular about baked goods... I have traveled the world and a picky person when it comes to any pastry. THESE ARE OUT OF THIS WORLD FANTASTIC. Worth every calorie and penny.
