We were so excited to check out another Hex & Company location! This space was larger in both square footage and in game selection. Just like the other locations, they have a retail section as well. We love that we found a place to check out new tabletop games and chill.

Hex & Company: A Game of Two Halves Hex & Company, a quirky blend of board game cafe and retail store, is a delightful haven for gamers and coffee enthusiasts alike. The eclectic decor and inviting atmosphere create a unique and enjoyable experience. The coffee, a caffeinated concoction that rivals the best of them, was a perfect pick-me-up. And the cheesecake pumpkin slice? A divine dessert that would make even the most discerning pastry chef swoon. The staff, for the most part, were friendly and helpful, guiding us through the labyrinth of board games and coffee options. However, our experience took a turn for the worse on a second visit later that day when a staff member, perhaps having a particularly rough day or perhaps just a bit too invested in board game etiquette, confronted one of our group members for browsing the games without prior permission and renting. It was a bit like a librarian scolding a child for touching a book. While it's understandable that the establishment has rules to ensure a fair and enjoyable experience for all patrons, the way the situation was handled could have been more tactful. A gentler approach, perhaps with a friendly reminder about the rental process, would have been more effective than the hostile approach we received from her. Despite this minor hiccup, Hex & Company remains a charming place to spend an afternoon. Just remember to play by the rules, check with the staff before touching anything, or risk the wrath of the board game gods.

The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, with a unique vibe that's perfect for anyone who enjoys gaming. The coffee here is top-notch, making it worth every visit. What makes Hex & Company stand out is its dedication to board gamers. They regularly host activities and competitions, which adds a lively energy to the place. Just be aware that during these events, seating might be limited—but trust me, the experience is worth it! Whether you're there for the games, the coffee, or just to soak in the great ambiance, Hex & Company is a must-visit.

I started going to hex and co regularly when I moved to NYC to meet new people and play D&D, and I love it! I do weekly D&D sessions at the west side location and come in on weekend nights every so often for a friend game night. The atmosphere is great and I love being able to play nerdy games with my friends while also getting to have snacks and a beer or 2! The staff is awesome and so friendly, especially Jeremy who is my favorite to come and chat with between games, they are always so helpful and are one of the reasons I look forward to every Hex visit! Definitely recommend checking it out!

What a really cool idea! We visited from Maryland with our daughter and son in law and look forward to many more visits. The selection of board and card games is incredible, I would never have guessed there was that may games in the entire world! Must be thousands on their shelves to choose from to play while enjoying a beer with friends or family. I recommend NOT drinking until you find the game you really like and learn the rules of that game! Only after getting started should you go grab a beer. A little alcohol goes a long way to making the rules of a new game harder to understand!!! 😉 Price to play was inexpensive. Their beer selection is not huge but they have something for everyone, it is decent beer and well priced. They have food but it is not something to rave about. None of it was bad. Think of it as something to snack on while playing games. Pretzel Bites and chicken tenders were what we ordered. The atmosphere is loud and fun as everyone around you is having a great time. They also have games for sale if you find a game you really enjoyed. This is certainly a place to go if you like beer and board/card games.

The stores have nicely constructed interior spaces, but the experience is hampered by a generally confusing and unorganized retail and play space, as well as disinterested employees. I visited both the Broadway locations, both were fairly empty at the times I had gone. I was barely greeted or engaged with by the employees who were more interested in their own conversations and didn't seem to be doing too much- I don't need tending too in retail stores, but it would be nice if they felt a little more approachable. The retail shelves looked disheveled and unorganized- some games looked in poor condition for new. There are no price tags on anything as well. You have to bring the game up to the register to see the price, which I had never experienced in a game store before. This is shocking because lots of games range in a variety of prices and seems like a waste of staff's time to confirm a price for you if the store is busy, and awkward for the customer if they decide it's not the amount they were anticipating on spending. The play space's games look beaten, battered, and like they were thrown on the shelves. I can't comment on my experience in actually playing at these locations, but if I were to pay to sit down and play, it would be nice to pull out a game in reasonable condition. I've been in plenty of board game cafes and stores with play spaces and am disappointed that these are, largely, the experiences that New York City has to offer. Maybe it is an off week for them, but I hope it improves in the future.

I like it the food wasn’t allat, I had the pizza it was pretty expensive and not the best so I recommend eating something before going in of you’re hungry. I went on a Monday so we didn’t have to pay hourly or whatever thing it is. Basically we payed once and we could spend as much time as we’d like there, it cost like 10 dollars? And with the student discount it’s 8. There’s lots of games and the atmosphere good I recommend going there to play some games with your friends, it’s nice.

What a cool place. The amount of games was overwhelming for me and didn’t recognize most of them but it’s a pretty chill place. Beers and snacks. Perfect place to go with friends or on a date. I’ll be back

This is a great board game cafe, spacious and well maintained. Great beer list, good variety of games for sale or for play, and some fantastic service. Truly everything you'd want for hanging out with friends and playing some games.

I found this place by mistake but it was fun. Loads of board games. Relaxed atmosphere and great snacks and drinks available. A must when you are in the mood to play games with friends.

$10 entry per person at the front. There's lots of sturdy wooden tables on which many patrons have set up Magic the Gathering (MtG) tournaments or Dungeon and Dragons (D&D) games. I'd recommend going early to get a table as it can get pretty crowded. There's a decent menu, with a fair amount of drink options (including alcoholic). Personally, I wouldn't order anything here again - while not necessarily expensive (it's all around $9), almost all the hot options are just microwaved frozen food, and taste as such. I'd avoid the pizza but the chicken strips were actually not too bad. They really have an endless number of board games to borrow and play. If you can think of a game, they probably have it (or duplicates of it). They also have many game accessories for sale such as sculptures, dice, various trading card game packs, and even some board games themselves. And they also have a little area for painting figurines near the register, with everything for sale. My one complaint is that staff isn't exactly friendly. While not rude, the woman at the front of the register was rather ... gruff. I didn't feel very welcome and I could tell she just wanted to go home. I guess I'll chalk it up to the store being busy and crowded, but I wish the workers were a bit nicer.

Hex & Company is a tabletop game store, cafe, and bar. As of this writing it seems they're doing well, as they have two locations with a third on the way. While waiting for an event to start nearby, I stopped in for a beer and to take a look. I'm sorry I didn't have more time to enjoy the gaming aspect as it seemed like many people were. They had a few tables of outdoor seating. Inside they had an area of game and card supplies at the cashier area. To the left is the table area and countless games. The tables are clearly marked on whether the games were available to play, or for purchase (which if you did purchase, you could also play there). Play is not free, it was $10/person which covered the use of the space and cleaning of the games. I saw once played, you put the games on a cart to be re-sorted and cleaned. They also have a full cafe and bar; they had an excellent selection of draft beer, which is really why I stopped. Their glassware is cool and fits the game vibe. They also had a full back room perfect for parties and group events. The staff was very welcoming, explaining how it all worked. Restrooms are large and clean, toward the back. I enjoyed my beer outside; it's a great place to take a break or stay for a while and play some games.

Very cool atmosphere, AMAZING customer service! Trey was super friendly and playful, yet still professional. I just found out about this place and it's so DOPE! Def would come back. I wish they had alcohol tho. I ordered Mac and cheese bites (was pretty good) and Cesar salad. (It was okay)

this is a neat little spot for board game enthusiast that also serves alcohol and coffee. I stopped by when I was studying to drink an espresso, but definitely come back with some friends and one of their games!

It's comfy, has great service and nice outdoor seating. The employees are very friendly and attentive.

Oh yes, an excellent tabletop board game store. Too bad it is in NYC and not in New Jersey where we live, though I guess the inconvenience of the commute will prevent us from dropping hundreds of dollars each week on board games. This is a board game cafe with a nice counter, tables to play at and food and drink options, but it worked better for us as a board game store. They have a whole wall of games to buy and a much smaller section of games to play. Though you can buy a game, open it and play there. By board games I mean Settlers of Catan plus - games like Gloomhaven, Ark Nova, Terra Mystica, Everdell, etc etc. They also had kids games which very much appealed to our toddler. The people working at the store were very knowledgeable about board games and could offer some good recommendations based on the board games that we play.

Pretty big board game area with lots of seating and selection of board games. There is a $10 cover but otherwise great spot to hangout!

LOVE this place. Last went here with friends before they renovated and now it's even nicer, spacious with amazing board game selections AND the customer service is fantastic! Cannot recommend it enough. Everyone who goes here is in great spirits, oh and did I mention the food is yummy? Fans of fun, look no further!

Leaving this review so people who look like myself know they might not be as welcomed as other patrons here. I came here yesterday with my friend and asked if there was availability, and a worker went around the back, then came back to me at the front and shared that I should find anywhere back there to sit. There was only 1 area that wasn't occupied by friend groups, so we sat there. We enjoyed our game for an hour, then another worker said we need to move and that anyone would have had the sense to know to not sit at the large group seating. May I remind you, this was the only actual spot available when I came, and I was told by a worker to sit anywhere at the back. She scurried off after stating that last line, then another worker came instead. I made him know that she was highly disrespectful and should apologize, but he instead doubled down on being disrespectful (even said I should have seen the empty 6-seater, and go back up to the front and say 'actually, nothing seems to be available'..). Clearly, logic had no place here, but still, I said nothing disrespectful back, didn't shout, etc. even though it could have been justified. I decided that while I spent my money for my friend and I to be there, it wasn't worth it being subjected to this amount of disrespect by the staff. And as I left, I couldn't help but notice that there was an empty large group table at the other end of the backroom (and it did not have a reservation sign), so they could have used it and left us alone. Even still, I'd have no issue being asked to move, but the way the workers chose to be disrespectful to the black patrons will have myself and my peers second-guessing going to another Hex and Co location again. Unfortunate because we've enjoyed going to other locations (but honestly have spent too much $ in them for a board games spot), but if these are the kinds of workers Hex & Co is comfortable hiring, we should enjoy our evenings elsewhere. And apologies for the long read, I just know I'd want this kind of info shared to me so that I know where people like myself are and aren't welcomed. Also, please have a great day and I hope you're having an excellent start to 2024! A few Hex & Co workers aren't enough to derail our great year, and I do wish these individuals change for the better as this degree of hatred often resides in people who are very unhappy themselves.

We used to love this place, but something has changed in the last year. The staff act like they are doing you a favor when they help you. They can put on a nice face for your first question or request but then quickly get annoyed and make you feel like you are bothering them. I came in with a few friends, we are all neurodiverse/autistic and there was something about the way they talked or us that felt judgmental. Which is strange because gaming draws neurodiverse folks and some of the staff is as well. But they can be very patronizing. It feels like a bunch of kids who love gaming and have not been trained on customer service or management. I will be finding somewhere else.

This place is super cute and cozy ! Perfect place to get some work done or chill with friends. Their cardamom rose latte was so good

Everything you want in a gamers cafe. Also really good for birthday parties, they have long tables in the back. Polite staff. Just around generally awesome. They have a lot of devoted clientele, so good idea to book seating unless you just want to go check out the vibe and get a decent coffee.

I love this place!! I love the prices! I love that they have snacks and coffee! I love the decor! I love the selection of games! I love that it doesn't feel congested! I've only ever been to the Uncommons before and this place is so refreshing compared to that location. It's $10 per person on weekdays ($5 for students). It's $15 if you want to make a reservation to secure a table. I was able to get one with no issues but the school year has started so there might be a wait. I played a good amount of games and wasn't given a time restriction but I left after about 3 hours. I think if there's a wait to get in then they might kick you out but that's reasonable. They also have games for purchase. You can also just go in for food and not any games if you want. The food itself was a little lackluster. The potato latkes were soggy and the pierogis were ok. The grilled cheese with fig spread was delicious tho!! It is a very small portion but worth it!

A very big space and a great place to hang out and try new board games with some affordable drinks and food. The west Harlem space is a lot bigger than the upper east side one and it's got a comfortable and relaxed vibe.

This place is so cool. There's so many games and also a bar inside. It's very cozy and I definitely think it would be fun in the winter to check out again

Such a great space in a great location. The staff are super friendly and helpful. My wife and I just dropped in to spend some time together doing something new and different, and ended up staying several hours playing 2-person games, drinking and laughing. By far our favorite game was one that one of the staff suggested to us.

Great place for board games with friends but it was very crowded when we went in the summer. Don't bother getting the food it's very mid and basically reheated or refried frozen food.

I absolutely love this place! As a die-hard gamer and collector of great gaming accessories, I am in heaven when here! The food options they offer are plentiful and great tasting, plus, they have a fantastic assortment of beverages, including a really good selection of IPAs, local brews and such! The staff are very friendly and super accommodating! If your looking for a place to meet new people, or to learn how to play D&D, this is the place to come! I started D&D here myself, and really appreciated their program; it can be daunting see all the regulars playing D&D, but was made to feel right at home here!

Good vibes. STUPID PRICES. I bought some packs of Lorcana and a Dragon Shield deck box. I try to support local. I knew they marked up the Deck box by 25% (MSRP 39.99 their price $49.99). The Lorcana pack was $12. I didn't realize until I was looking at the price of me beer. When I went inside, they had a small self made sign that said "pre-release prices" that was covered by two other signs. There was no information or explanation of a higher price. I looked online. And there is not a "pre-release pricing" from Disney. This was the price gouging that they chose to keep up with aftermarket pricing. They are the same as a scalper with a building. Disney did something nice for local game stores by selling 2 weeks before big box stores (target/walmart/best buy) got them. And instead of fostering a community, they milk people like me who just want to get an Abu card. I will not be financially supporting this company again.

It is a fun place to go to have a beer or coffee with friends. We didn't play board games, but they are available, and most other people were playing.

We showed up at 5:30 on a Saturday and were magically able to get a table for 10 (6 kids and 4 adults)! Great selection on tap (the nitro stout from a Staten Island brewer was delicious), and loved the vibe.

This place was so much fun! The staff were really friendly and attentive and not only were there yummy food and beverages, there were so many amazing games and gadgets to look at around the store!

Go-to board game spot in the city (Sip n Play is better but in Brooklyn). Spacious, fair pricing for game play (discount for students), great for large groups (you can reserve ahead of time for a small fee), good drink and snack menu with decent prices, friendly staff and great selection of board games to play and purchase. Overall, 4.5 rating.

Had a little birthday gathering in the back and the staff was very accommodating! They gave us some cutlery for the cake we brought in and we pretty much had the back room to ourselves the whole evening. The games were a great way for us to celebrate the birthday girl, especially since most of us didn't know each other! After closing the staff was kind and made me feel safe while I waited for a bus that never came.

This place is a little gem for magic the gathering players. The owner and or host was very attentive for my prerelease. Even though the game was booked out, he was nice enough to get my on the wait list. The tourney was run very smoothly and the lightning and players there were very polite. I had a great time. Coffee was also spot on! 5/5

I recently went to the Hex & Co. UWS location for my 25th birthday and could not say enough great things. We had 15 people attend, so a reservation had to be made in advance and the staff were incredibly easy to communicate with when trying to figure out what would be the best situation for my group (One big table vs. a private room). It was a bit busy when we got there - only two people appeared to be working check-in/the bar despite the location being full - but the wait was not long and the ID/Proof of vaccination checking went rather quickly. Being right across from Columbia University means your ID will absolutely be checked (and rightly so!) The location does not have table service, everything needs to be ordered at the bar, but the food and drinks arrive quickly and were delicious. The mango habanero mead was amazing and I would 100% go back just for that. The game selection was great, and everyone was able to find something that wanted to play, though some of the games had clearly been damaged with use. Overall, it was a great experience and I would absolutely recommend Hex &. Co. for a unique date night or casual get together. It was a fantastic way to spend my birthday. Giving four stars only because it felt unfair to the staff working that there was only one person checking IDs on such a busy night, and because some of the games on the borrow shelf were incomplete and missing pieces.

I love board game cafes, so when someone introduced me to this place, I loved it and found myself coming back. For starters, it's $10 cash/card ($5 with a student id) for the whole day until closing. One reason I choose Hex & Co over those board game cafes is that they do not limit you on time for a similar price point. They might ask you to move at a certain time because someone made a reservation at a certain time, but by no means are you kicked out if you can find another free/empty table. They also have a big variety of games along the walls. They do have some organization in how they arranged the games on the shelf. They categorize it by difficulty of strategy, number of players required or popular/classic games. It's pretty useful when searching for specific games or just any game for the number of people in your party. You are welcome to bring your own games. And they even have a wall of unopened board games for purchase. Lastly, they have food/desserts/drinks available if you are hungry/thirsty during your stay. They have Brooklyn Roasting Company coffee, pastries, pizza, melt ice cream, etc.

Was engaged in a heated intergalactic battle with five other space conquerors for eight hours this past Sunday. As we learned the rules of the masterful board game "Eclipse", smiles were shared, insults exchanged, and hunger was an imminent threat on our friendships. The constant availability of tater tots, espresso and tuna melts kept our deep space battles not only civil, but memorable, and created friendships that will outlive any of our imaginary space colonies. The staff were beyond hospitable even though we were engaged in pretend space blood shed, and encouraged us to stay as late as we needed to determine who was victorious in the silent vacuum that is space. OH, they have beer too!

Hex is friggin' awesome. My group and I were here for about four to five hours and had the best time, and I can't wait to bring others here. Board game cafes are the new bars! First of all, I didn't even know this many board games existed. Nerddom knows no bounds, and I love it! I learned so many great games, like Codenames and Bananagrams, and played old favorites, like Scattergories and Cards Against Humanity. They have hundreds, maybe thousands, of options, all categorized in many ways, like number of players, type of game, popularity, etc. You're bound to find one you love, and maybe even buy. $10 per person, $5 for students, and don't forget about the food, as it's surprisingly good. I got the vegan bean chilli and thought it was delicious. Got a Paris tea as well, which was refreshing. Friends got the mac and cheese, beer, and coffee. Overall, food and drinks menu was better than we'd all expected. Best clean fun you can have on a Saturday night, or any night, and so much more spacious and affordable than The Uncommons, too. Can't imagine anyone not enjoying their time here!

Very expensive to reserve a table in advance! You need to play not for the table, but per person, so even for hanging out just two people is really pricy. Also, after putting one's name on the waitlist for a walk in, they might not call you period to let you know what's up. The baristas and staff are friendly, but at a certain point it's just cheaper to buy the board game myself or host at my place and get better and cheaper food, drinks, and coffee from another store.

Love the vibe here on a rainy New York City Friday. You can sit quietly, shop for cool games, enjoy Brooklyn Roasting Company coffee or a variety of food options. Great, welcoming crew and space. Walk right by that Seattle chain and find a bit of local heaven.

This place is Absolutely Goated. They Literally have every single game you can think of. Every Wednesday there is Dungeons and Dragons night open to anyone of any experience level. They have a summer camp for kids to play board games all day. For adults they have a large selection of beer and snacks for hanging out and having fun. Come here with a group of friends, reserve a table and I promise it'll be a good time.

such a fun place with really nice staff. a lot of the games we didn't know which is exciting to try out new things. Amazing beer selection and good food. we had the chicken sandwich and pretzel. Both had a subpar presentation but were pretty tasty despite that. absolutely coming back!!

A great, fun and safe neighborhood spot to hang out with friends, get some drinks, eat some bites, and play some games! There is a $10 fee to sit down, but you can stay as long as you like. I've visited when they were in their smaller space, and their now larger space. I've purchased upgrades and/or expansion packs for board games that I already own, and the owners discuss varieties and versions of those to help you make decisions, and they even offer to teach you how to play the games too (during slower times!). I'm waaay past college years, but I still feel comfortable and enjoy visiting this business.

Came here on a date and we both enjoyed our time here. Food is yummy and the employees are super nice! My boyfriend and I are definitely coming back for more date nights here :) also they have a HUGE selection of games! Super fun!

Tried walking in (with at least 4 empty tables in there) and the staff said we'd have to join a waitlist for over an hour and a half. None of the people on the waitlist were there, so I'm confused why we couldn't be accommodated for just 2 people. Just buy a game and have drinks at home.

Was there moving my son into his dorm at columbia university so I thought i would drop in. Was excited to check out a game store in NYC. The place is pretty good size. They have a counter for food, beveraes and adult beverages which is great and the staff is great at serving food etc. However, this was the best and only part of this visit I enjoyed. If you are a board game/table top fan you might not want to go out of your way to pay a visit. All of the tables that were in use were MTG with three exceptions for D&D or some relative RPG. No one was playing board/table top games. I made a point to make another visit the next day and had the same experience. I did feel like doing some shopping and they have a decent board game inventory. Nothing had any prices on it. I asked the folks behind the counter if they had a price list. I was informed on multiple occassionas that I would need to drag each box to the counter so they can scan it. Really? I mean they cant put a catalog anywhere even on their web page or perhaps one fo the many ipads the facility had laying around? Uterlly disappointed. If you are a fan of MTG or D&D/RPG it may be worth a vistit. Out side of that, I recommend not wasting time. Don't be fooled by the name.

One of our stops on a NYC visit. Very happy group!!! Great camaraderie between young and old. Food was decent and Beer offered! As a parent of DD player, this place made me very happy. Seeing game players of all kind join together, even as strangers, and play was really heart warming.

If I want some coffee with oat milk, I'll 100% stop by Hex & Company!! I always buy a breakfast sandwich when I get my coffee! I'll for sure try more food items in the future.

Boycott this place, and open your own board game cafe!! They lied to my friend about a deposit and refused to return it. The deposit was supposed to cover a $15/person minimum but the place decided last minute that this was an entrance fee to reserve a table. It costs $5 to walk in, how does this make sense? Then one of the workers came over to the table and demanded more money cus there was an extra person there, but just the usual cover charge. Seems like they are tying to take advantage of being one of very few similar establishments, but I doubt this type of behavior will be allowed to continue forever.

I work for Gigamic and visit a lot of board game cafes. Hex and co is excellent on all fronts. They were nearly capacity on a Monday afternoon. I had a latte and a blackberry danish. The danish was light and crispy, not too sweet. My latte was smooth and just lightly bitter. The staff is friendly and the manager even gave me a personal hello!

Absolutely adore this place. Reasonably priced food, great atmosphere, a metric ton of fantastic boardgames. 10/10

Great place. Great atmosphere. It was pretty busy on a Saturday night, which seems like a really good sign. Everything was priced reasonably and the price tp game is definitely worth it if you stay a while. Everyone we interacted with was very helpful and professional with useful and fun recommendations for games. They get my highest recommendation.

Hex & Company is definitely the best board game cafe I've had the pleasure of trying so far. It's too bad I discovered it only a few months before I left NYC - because had I known about it earlier on in my two years in the city, there is no doubt in my mind that I would have frequented this cafe at least once a month. If you are a student, present your ID and for $5, you can spend the entire day/evening at Hex & Company and play any and all games to your heart's desire. And I mean any game - Hex & Co has literally every game you'd want to play, and there are just walls of board games throughout the cafe. (They even have a NSFW bin of games if you're feeling cheeky). The cafe also has food and beer options, although I never tried them as I primarily came to the cafe to play games with friends. I've had a blast every single time I went to Hex & Co and it makes me miss my student days in NYC, as there is nothing more peaceful than a fun night of board games with some great company.
