16 LA Restaurants That Are Perfect For Your Picnic

"Not many shops have a better overall selection of wine, beer, and liquor than Hi-Lo in Culver City (and Long Beach). They’ve got a ton of beers from small local spots like Offshoot, Smog City, and Beachwood, along with every kind of wine you can think of (plus a few you can’t). They also put together Spritz Kits, and have all kinds of aperitifs that are ideal for drinking over ice on a hot day - for example, some Campari and a can of soda water makes a damn good summer drink. Pick up some fancy potato chips while you’re here, too." - brett keating

Where To Order Craft Beer For Delivery & Pick-Up In LA

"Culver City’s best spot for hard-to-find beer, wine, and liquor, Hi-Lo Liquor has a constantly rotating selection of local (and less-local) brews, everything from Beachwood, Cellador, and Three Weavers to Chicago’s Half Acre and Brooklyn’s Stillwater Artisanal. Order contact-free pick-up, or $5 local delivery via their website. There’s a Hi-Lo doing the same thing in Long Beach, too." - brett keating

Where To Pick Up Food For The Hollywood Bowl, Cinespia, & Every Other Summer Event - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"The food at an outdoor event is important, but so is the booze. And if your priorities lean more towards the latter, Hi-Lo is a good spot to hit. This next-level neighborhood market has a big selection of beer, wine, and stronger things, and all kinds of snacks to help you stay upright (and awake through the LA Phil concert you thought would make you feel like an adult)." - Jess Basser Sanders, Brett Keating

Google
Highly recommend this place! Great selection of beer and liquor, fresh beer, great prices on everything, and fantastic customer service. The guy in charge today was *especially* helpful. This is a necessary stop!

Google
Superb wine, beer and liquor store. Has an all around great selection of all things. They always have beers that are hard to find. I visit a couple times a year to the area and always come in at least a few times. The staff and owners are also very knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. Everything you want and need in a local establishment.

Tim Polk

Google
Fantastic spot--great beer, wine and liquor selection, and cool goodies to eat. If I lived nearby, I'd be here 2 or 3 times a week. Helpful staff.

Google
How can so many people love a liquor store? Hi-Lo is just special like that. Its my go-to any time I need “something to bring” a great bottle of wine, a regional beer, an exciting new spirit. I love picking up a La Morra pizza from their freezer and a pack of cider on my way home from work. Also everyone there is just nice and rad to talk to. Agree the prices can be steep! But if you’re looking for a deal they can normally point out the best pick too. Glad you’re here Hi-Lo.

Austin Doucette

Google
Hi-Lo has perhaps the most impressive selection of rare craft beers in all of Los Angeles. Some companies I've been able to find here include: Maine Brewing Co., Toppling Goliath, Alchemist, Anchorage, Cigar City, Jester King, Tree House, and more. They're willing to import beer from anywhere in the country. And they even have a request log in store where customers can write down specific brews that Hi-Lo will have shipped to the store. When you walk into the store, this list will be directly on your right, by the first beverage fridge. Make sure to check it out, and request some great brews that we all can enjoy! If you are a craft beer/microbrewery fan, you must visit Hi-Lo!

Google
The go to market for top selects of craft beer and wine. Nice staff and onsite pours too 🤙🏼

Ryoheiken San

Google
I am only giving them 1 star because I do not see the point in giving a tip in a liquor store for 3 coke's.

Andrea Hanson

Google
They have dairy free and gluten free snacks and organic snacks and drinks.

Yelp
Beautiful locally owned liquor store. They have a variety of local and hard to find drinks that you won't find it regular grocery stores. Service was very friendly and welcoming, very informative and helpful if you have any questions. They have small cute gift ideas that go along well with a bottle of wine or beer, a one stop shop if you are looking for a personalized gift.

Yelp
Went for cookies next door and stumbled across this place. As a Vermont native it gave me that homey family country vibe. Super chill atmosphere, tasted some delicious Whiskey, it has vast and unique options in the coolers; wine samplers and other drinks at the bar. Will definitely return for more events and to hang with the locals!

Yelp
A small neighborhood store that sells craft beer, wines, and spirits. The space isn't large, but they have a really good selection for the space they have. The people that work here have always been great too. It's been a while since my last visit, but I've been coming here for years. I've really only bought craft beer from here; maybe a bottle of whiskey or two. But the wine wall looks pretty stacked, including a lot of the natural wine, which seems to be pretty popular these days. Their craft beer selection even includes rarities that you don't usually see in the area, e.g. some beer I bought on this visit from Trillium located in Boston. There's also a counter where you can order a limited amount of drinks they have at any given time. The menu is located above the counter area. And on Friday nights I think they have food vendors that rotate. They even have a limited amount of grocery items for sale, but I always get distracted with the whiskey and beer - I look past the food items except for the doggy biscuits I bought for my friend this time. Definitely a great shop and a great spot for that stretch of Washington Boulevard.

Yelp
Love going here for their tastings and learning about the different spirits, wines, and beer they serve. Friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable service and great suggestions when purchasing a bottle for a gift! They also have Tony's chocolate bars!

Yelp
Quincy is the bees knees! She was so friendly and helpful and recommended some gems. This place is so inviting and has a great selection with reasonable prices. It's a GREAT place to enjoy a low key date night and a wine flight! It's not your classic "liquor store". It's a boutique wine and spirits procurement experience.

Yelp
Love this store they have a great variety here the store presence is spectacular great ppl

Yelp
Great selection. Friendly and knowledgeable staff. Gave them hints of what I was looking for. They picked two very good bottles. Definitely a place to visit.

Yelp
Super fun place to shop at, you guessed it, hi and lo price points. And the staff is a perfect combination of helpful and hands-off. And beyond the booze, there's tons of other fun stuff to browse/discover. My advice, if you want to discover new finds but don't want to shop at the high end of the spectrum, is to ask for the best bang for the buck within the category you're shopping.

Sara I.

Yelp
Great selection. Customer service is always friendly and helpful. Super cute neighborhood store.

Yelp
WHACK STAFF! The bald chick with the gauges, get rid of her. I figured I'd check this place out as I'm new to the neighborhood and it's less than 800ft from my house. I dropped in roughly 6 minutes prior to closing with my family who was in from out of town. My elderly mom was a bit overwhelmed by the selection of spirits. Service started out great with recommendations and shortly went to shit. My mom was in the middle of making a decision and the bald chick came up super passive aggressive and stated, "Let me know if there is something that I can help you with or assist in making a decision. We closed 3 min ago." (As if I'm oblivious to time) Then as left, she went outside to grab signage and I heard her discuss how we came in before closing. I looked back and she tried to quiet down. Umm pretty sure I heard you! Trash interaction from her that completely ruined my experience here. People like her ruin it for businesses. Customer service goes a long way. If it's a problem to assist customers maybe find a new job that requires zero customer service. On the flip side the gentleman who was there with her was polar opposite. Super friendly and helpful despite the circumstances. You should have more people like him around!

Yelp
An update has been needed for this spot for awhile now. Here goes: I used to think highly of this space until the staff really revealed themselves. They're not honorable folks. The selection of beers is nothing compared to another spot I found a short distance away with a rockstar owner who actually cares not only about the customers (I talked to people at this location about staff being less than honorable only for them to do absolutely nothing about it- not even acknowledge it) but about the politics with the bottles they carry. I would have loved to have seen this business do better by their community with staff & staff selected brews. Once upon a time it was a really great spot to hang out & get a beer. Sadly staff, pretentiousness, & the lackluster options killed it for me. I would absolutely not recommend going here anymore. I haven't been in literally years even though it was literally around the corner from my house. Go to Blackbeard's over in Sawtelle. There is a massive difference in pretty much everything.

Yelp
One day on a visit to Coolhaus I noticed the liquor store looked fancier than usually. Well yesterday I decided to go check it out! I love this place, specialty drinks, candy, chips, and all sorts of snacks! Also the liquor selection and the mixers are guaranteed to make you the best self taught bartender! They have inexpensive drinks and expensive drinks, whatever you need Hi-Lo has it. Also the staff is great, everyone wears a mask, and you are instructed to put on hand sanitizer as soon as you enter the store! 10/10 recommend!

Yelp
I've been following this market on IG for awhile now and finally decided to stop in last Thursday when I wanted some nice beer but didn't feel like driving to any of my favorite breweries in the Southbay to pick up. Obviously the are adjustments here in light of Covid-19, and a huge thing I loved is that right at the door they had a box of disposable gloves for customers to put on while handling the products. Since it is a small store they ask no more than 5 people at a time, but since it was a thursday afternoon it was just myself and two other folks so no worries. I went straight for the beer case and was pleasantly surprised to find so many good picks. I went with two hazys from my fav, LA Ale Works brewery, and a four pack of Modern Times I hadn't tried yet. The cashier was nice enough to give me the 6 pack discount since I technically bought 6 beers, and they had bags set out to bag your own stuff if you wanted. So excited to find a decently priced beer spot in the area, will definitely be making regular stops here to try more hard to find options.

Yelp
Don't be fooled by the name, as this is not your typical liquor market. While it is a shop with wine, beer, spirits, mixers, and more (with a pretty decent selection to boot), it is also a great place to come in and enjoy with a few friends. They have a "roped off" area with some stools where they can serve you by the glass, pop open a bottle you buy, and even snack on goods that you purchase in the store (the popcorn was free). Most of all, it is a friendly place with a chill vibe, and just a great addition to the Culver City scene. To highlight the good: -Great, friendly service -Solid price points (with some friendly discounts) -Great selection of wine (and other booze it seems) -Offerings by the glass -The occasional other offerings, including (from what I read) flights, oysters, and sample sips -No food/kitchen, but they do have snacks you can buy, and they also let us have food delivered -Something "different" in the scene -Did I mention the service? These are some seriously cool folks here The could-be-better? -Not much to complain about! It's a small place, so it's best for small groups. Overall: recommended! I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Very cool place. Great selection of wine and beer. Came here for a beer and left buying quite a few for home. Highly recommend for finding something delicious
google avatar

Yelp
Love going here when I'm in the hood - they basically have everything you need to catch a buzz! I particularly want to give Ben a shoutout - every time I go and ask questions about wine he gives super insightful feedback. He has never steered me in the wrong direction - every bottle he's suggested has been a hit! Anytime I'm in the area and want to buy a bottle, Hilo is my first stop.
google avatar

Jae L.

Yelp
What a fun experience! Came here for a thursday wine flight. $15 for 3 glasses. They had a food truck outside and you could bring the food in to eat with wine. Street parking only! They also have jenni's ice cream

Yelp
This store got me with the storefront. Love the support for the black, brown & Asian community. The gentleman who was working was very nice, professional, welcoming & helpful. The sore was clean and organized.

Yelp
So cute I love them. Good drinks nice workers and have a newsletter to keep u up to date on free drink / food tasting events happening at the store

Yelp
I love this place they have all the specialty craft spirits, liqueurs, mixers etc. I'm prego so unfortunately can't indulge in the above at the moment. They also have seedless for mocktails I didn't care for it but some people swear by it so if your one of those people their price is pretty great cheaper then most places including amazon. They have some great charcuterie meat and goat cheese brands as well that are def worthwhile. Once again I can no longer indulge at the moment however they are my fav brands. In the interim I will still be a frequent shopper there for my Torres's truffle chips that are beyond amazing. I have had a few brands and this is the best and trust me they are hard to find I've searched the market. The customer service is great Zoe helped me last time and Mike helped me this time. They have such great energy there. I always look forward to this place there's always cool finds.

Yelp
Amazing little neighborhood shop with a gorgeous selection. Perfect for gifts. Shoutout to Tim for taking care of me and going above and beyond today!
google avatar

Faith F.

Yelp
This is basically an epic candy store but for adults. It's local in Culver City, and this is my first stop before any friend's birthday to pick up a gift. They have cheeses and meats to do a quick (and quality) charcuterie board and the staff are super friendly and helpful. 10/10 come to this place almost weekly
google avatar

Kay G.

Yelp
To Talmadge and the team at Hi-Lo: From the bottom of my boozy heart, thank you. You made my birthday one of the best I've had in quite some time. Hi-Lo popped up as a suggestion on Yelp as I was researching venues to hold my birthday gathering on a Saturday evening (9/21). The first venue I was in contact with did not exceed my expectations and I was at a loss prior to seeing Hi-Lo's mention. After quick research I drove over on a Monday to check it out. It's so cute and welcoming inside. I spoke with the person on duty that night (I believe his name was Tim) and asked about reserving some space so that my friends and I could spend some time together. I was given a business card and to reach out for further information, which I did, and Talmadge saved the day. Everything, from my first visit to the day of the gathering, was done with courtesy and kindness. Although I privately emailed the Hi-Lo team I wanted to personally and openly thank each of you for such a quality business. Each wine suggestion was considerate; I was told by one of my guests that the beer selections were great as well however, I'm not a beer drinker and have to take their word for it. You can tell that you're coming into a business that doesn't play games with their customers and genuinely wants you to not only feel welcomed but to return as a proud and satisfied patron. When I tell you that everyone loved it, and we're a challenging group of people to please, the entire evening was fantastic. Hated to have missed out on the oysters (that was completely on us for coming just after service was wrapping up) but there were absolutely no complaints. You'll definitely see us again sometime soon; perhaps not as a group but you've certainly just gained about ten new customers. Thank you for your hospitality and genuine warmth. May your business thrive within the community and for years to come. All the best, KG

Yelp
The chicest liquor store ever. I love the space!!! Amazing wine, beer and liquor options. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and so welcoming.
google avatar

Natalie R.

Yelp
Hi-Lo is a very hip liquor store in Culver arts district that you need to get your alcohol from (and probably some snacks). They have a small selection of wine, hard liquor, and beer but you will absolutely find something in this store. They carry mainly local and "cool" brands, none of the mainstream alcohol here. To go with your drinks they also have a variety of snacks, non-alcoholic drinks, sweets, and refrigerated foods. Tastings are also offered! All the products are laid out nicely and easy to see, and the place is spotless! The staff is extremely friendly and warm, happy to help you in any way they can (definitely ask for recommendations if you can't decide on something). This spot is a really great addition to the arts district scene and I like to pop in when I'm looking to gift liquor. Can be pricey, but that all depends on what you're getting.
google avatar

Caroline M.

Yelp
Love this place. They helped me pick out an incredible line up of wines to pair with our anniversary dinner. Absolute gem of a shop.

Jenny S.

Yelp
Lol agree with the reviews below about staff. One was really nice just not knowledgeable, tried to discreetly ask someone else for their recs and they passed me off to the same person.
google avatar

Zoe L.

Yelp
Great little high-end market in the Arts District with surprising finds such as dried flower bouquets and a table full of Tony's chocolate bars. This is a good place to try new breweries or flavors that are off the typical BevMo path. No Fat Tire in sight, but instead Smog City. Lots of IPAs, smaller selection of stouts. They clearly put a lot of thought and intention behind their curation. Small selection of drink accessories (flask, mule cup, etc.) and a freezer of Jeni's ice cream. Friendly staff without the bro-dude condescension, which I appreciate very much.
google avatar

Lenny D.

Yelp
New fave spot, cool selection of everything, friendly knowledgeable staff, good snacks, maybe a tad more expensive but worth it. Nice to shop in a small store.
google avatar

Sean M.

Yelp
Felt compelled to spread word and praise about this local liquor store and market. Extremely safe with COVID regulations and precautions...you're greeted with hand sanitizer and a sign to of course follow mask requirements. The store itself has a great lay out and energy, with amazing selections of wines and spirits. I was helped by a nice guy named Mike who also told us that when more of LA regulations loosen up they have a tasting area and seats for customers. Glad I discovered this neighborhood gem and will certainly be back!
google avatar

Taylor M.

Yelp
Amazing selection of craft beer and spirits. Very helpful staff and now you can sip on some draft beer or wine as you shop!
google avatar

JR S.

Yelp
I was looking for a liquor store within a 5-mile radius and this just so happened to be what yelp directed me to. I was expecting a typical sketchy-ish store but much to my surprise this store was totally unexpected. The store is beautiful, clean, and uplifting. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable of their beverages and didn't hesitate to be of assistance. I came with low expectations and am leaving with having had a remarkable experience. 5-stars, hands down.
google avatar

Alexa N.

Yelp
A great place to find anything you need and don't need. Can't wait to come back and explore their unique options. Excellent service!
google avatar

Yelp
I am so happy to make this review! We stopped to pick up ice cream next door at cool haus, and stumbled into the hi-lo. What a lovely spirits shop. The staff is knowledgeable and made a few recommendations based on my wine and alcohol taste after having a brief conversation. Can't wait to try the selections! See you again soon!
google avatar

C K.

Yelp
I've been coming here since they've opened and am generally a huge fan, but it seems like there's been a recent decrease in staff quality. The girl with the bangs is rude and has little knowledge of common alcohol. Instead of asking a co-worker or looking it up, she made up a price for a bottle of wine - when my boyfriend asked if the price was accurate, she flippantly replied, "I hope so" and processed payment (another employee overheard us discussing it and stepped in to look up the correct price, but the few bucks difference was wasn't worth the hassle of voiding the payment etc. to us). When everyone else in the shop is so helpful this kind of service and ignorance is unfortunately very noticeable. I'd suggest searching for her replacement.
google avatar

Pete P.

Yelp
Great local liquor store that oftentimes has hard to find bottles you can't get anywhere else in LA. The staff are all very friendly and knowledgable (although some of them can get a little too "bro-y" with you if you're a dude), the selection is great, and now that have a cool little bar with great, local craft beer on draft that is constantly rotating. If I lived within walking distance to this place, I'd definitely stop by for a beer on a regular basis. Knocking it down one star because I have caught them selling way overly expired IPA's before - I once called them on it on a six-pack of IPA that was canned a year ago! - as well as having an overstock of hazy IPA's recently. I know hazy is all the rage right now, but not everyone digs it, and it'd be nice if they had a balance of the latest trends with the more traditional IPA's. Other than that, it's one of the best liquor stores in LA. Go get you a tasty beverage!

Yelp
Hi-Lo Liquor is a specialty bottle and artisan foods shop located in the art gallery district of Culver City. It's the kind of place that your super nerdy food friend would tell you to check out. I discovered it a while back on Instagram before they opened and made it a point to visit when I was in the Westside. It's small but all their products kept me interested as I perused each section of prepared foods, jams, liquor, craft beer, and wine. It reminded me of the kind of products an artisan cheese store would carry. The staff here are friendly and available for you to pick their brains for recommendations. They are very approachable. On my way out, I picked up a bottle of wine they recommended from France (in the $10 to $20 range) and a bottle of craft beer from Dry River Brewing. Hi-Lo's selection will please craft beer and wine connoisseurs, along with those who are adventurous and are willing to try something new or interesting. Definitely worth checking out if you're in Culver City.
google avatar

Selene M.

Yelp
This liquor store is amazing. I've never walked into such a visually pleasing liquor store. It's no surprise that each bottle of liquor, can of beer and bottle of wine is hand picked by the owners. I've never seen such a unique collection. The workers were so helpful, giving us time to look around, letting us ask a million questions and providing their opinions on good pics. This place is perfect if you want to put together a unique gift basket or just pickup a picnic lunch and some booze. Drove all the way from Sherman Oaks to check this place out and it was totally worth it. We stocked up on tons of unique liquor.
google avatar

James L.

Yelp
Love having this place blocks away! Alway stopping in to get a new beer I've never heard of. My beer game has increased greatly, everyone that works here is hella friendly and knows their beer. Always giving great recommendations on booze and beers. Now when I go to parties or events, I'm the guy bringing new beers to the table.
google avatar

Yelp
I love this place. It's basically a hipster bodega in the best way, with all kinds of interesting beer, wine and liquor, plus snacks and even some groceries. It has an Instagram-ready exterior and a highly curated vibe inside. I stopped in for some whiskey and left with multiple items, all of which have turned out to be excellent purchases. The guy working there (Aaron, I think?) was super friendly and helpful and unpretentious. I appreciated that he steered me towards the midrange whiskeys because I was making cocktails and didn't try to sell me on a needlessly more expensive purchase. The one I bought I hadn't tried before and it was perfect. I also bought some Luxardo cherries for my old fashioneds, but I'll be honest since I opened the jar I've been looking for basically any excuse to eat them. Delicious. And I made what I thought was probably a silly impulse buy and got some organic strawberry shrub - I know, it sounds ridiculous and like I have to be wearing a tiny fedora and listening to Arcade Fire on vinyl but I'm not doing any of those things and you guys, this shrub stuff is awesome. You just mix it with cold gin or vodka and voila - a beverage that makes everyone happy. Go check this place out. Coolhaus is right next door so you can cross multiple vices off your to-do list at once. I bet those cherries would be amazing on ice cream...
google avatar

Ari R.

Yelp
Wow, what a cool market. This gem of a market and also Bar & Garden a few doors down has the best liquor selection in Culver City... maybe in all of LA. They've got a highly, highly curated selection of booze. All the best whiskeys, rums, gins and tequilas. They have Tony's chocolate (the best) and are stocked with the best bread, eggs, and milk. It's a lovely space.... so tasteful. I could browse here for hours!

Yelp
My neighbors and I like to call this new store the "inconvenience store." Looking for a ginger ale or sprite? Nah. Looking to stop by the corner store for a familiar brand of reasonably priced liquor on your way home from work? No. Looking for a six pack from a microbrewery that you may or may not like which costs about $15? Then you've found your spot.

Vane M.

Yelp
I learned about HiLo after attending the Art Festival. As a business in my community I was excited to support it. However, on more than one occasion, the customer service has been disappointing. I noticed that I was redirected to sanitize my hands (no problem with that) but the customer behind me wasn't told the same. When I made my purchase, the cashier engaged in a polite and welcoming conversation with the customer before me. When it was my turn to pay, there was silence. Today, my friend who picked up my favorites from HILo complained about the customer service, as well. After he paid for his items, he politely asked for a bag. The cashier didn't bother to use words and only pointed with his fingers where the bags were. A simple, "here they are sir and thank you for your purchase" goes a long way. I highly urge you all to treat every customer with the same vibes.
google avatar

David D.

Yelp
This place is pretty cool. No it isn't your regular market so don't come in planning to get hot cheetos or Advil early Sunday morning (that's what 711 up the street's for), but they do have a great rotating selection of craft beers and sprits. Like really great, from different micro and super-micro brewers across the country, and usually someone who knows how to recommend a beer for your day. And, they also have domestic beers for sale at the same price you'd find mostly anywhere else, so that's convenient if you want to take a few good beers for you, and some PBR for everyone else to open, sip, and leave open practically full for the house owner to find and angrily dump into their lawn the next day. They also have other snacks drinks and consumables for sale, but I usually only stop by when I want to try a new beer.
google avatar

Angela W.

Yelp
I'm not really a liquor or beer connoisseur, but I think this market is really quaint and cute. I was really happy to see they had my favorite harmless harvest coconut water and St. George's gin. I'll definitely be back to try out their beers and ice cream too. There was a guy working here who said he selects a lot of the liquors. I didn't catch his name but he seemed really friendly and we chatted very briefly about St George and Ice cream.

Yelp
New store with all the essential provisions for life... i.e. Bourbon (other liquor too), wine, beer, and snacks! Found a rare bourbon from the Seattle distillery which was competitive priced and snagged their last bottle. Will be back to check out their other rare spirits.

Yelp
As beer nerds, Hi-Lo has always been a must-swing-by for us whenever we pass through Culver. And we were delighted to find out that they also provide large-quantity deliveries for events- we immediately took the opportunity to work with them to source the beers for our 180+ person wedding. We went in with ideas about which beers we wanted, but they were so great in helping us decide on quantities per type of beer for a crowd that size. They kept in touch about availabilities of our top choices and the delivery went seamlessly! Would definitely utilize this service in the future if we ever have a reason for a big event in the future.

Yelp
A perfect example of gentrification! although they do sell quality products(along with a high price) you can tell the only customers here are those who can afford it. As someone who has lived in this neighborhood for over 20 years, I can testify as a minority, only those who are privileged shop here. Please make Hi-Lo more accessible for the communities that have been here from the start. Thank you.
