I was recently talking with my partner and lamenting how handrolls in the city are so expensive and it's impossible to get a simple handroll like the ones at konbini in Japan or 7/11s in Hawaii. Although there are options for onigiri, it's hard to find a good quality spot when you're craving raw fish without having to shell out a pretty penny. Luckily for us, Hi-node has opened up for fill the void with small but mighty handrolls, at $11 for 3. We each got a set of 3 and then split an order of karaage ($7), which made for a satisfying lunch. The fish is fresh and the proportion of the fish to rice in the handrolls is fairly generous so you don't feel like you're just eating rice. The karaage took a little longer but was piping hot and juicy. The woman running the shop was super nice as well, although since there's only one person working the front, it can be a little slow if there are several people in line. Overall, it felt almost like we were stopping for a snack in a quiet shop in Japan and if I lived in the neighborhood, this would go straight into my usual lunch rotation. I'm sure we'll be back soon the next time the craving for some raw fish hits!
