Where to Eat on the Road in Between Dallas and Austin

"A Caribbean restaurant in Killeen? Heck yes. Order up a plantain sandwich or a plates of pork, chicken, and skirt steak for a big apptetite. Don’t miss a side of yuca fries. Note: this spot is closed Sunday through Tuesday." - Courtney E. Smith, Amy McCarthy

Google
Love this place! Service, food, and atmosphere are all unbelievably great. Every meal I have ever had here was nothing less than amazing. Great local killeen spot.

Google
If you haven't been here... Get here! The hours are not the best but The Food... The food is awesome and the service great. Definitely a must go to restaurant in the whole Killeen area if not further. The steak was well cooked and the bean soup was phenomenal! My wife loved her dish and said the fish was great.

Sandra Irizarry

Google
Food was flavored really well and the tostones were great. We tried the empanadas as well but there was a big bone in the chicken empanada. Presentation of the food was nice and our server was friendly. We were welcomed as soon as we came in. Overall I would go back to try something else on the menu. I have the atmosphere a 3 because it was kind of hot inside.

Google
Great. The food is wonderful, the service is excellent and the prices are very good. The outside of the building made us wonder if we should try it but when we stepped through the door, the smell and charm of the inside convinced us that we were in the right place. I plan to go back.

Google
Love this place. They have delicious PuertoRican menu, great seasoning. All was delicious but I prefer my food hot, mine was warm, wait time was little longer than other days. The staff is very friendly and respectful, great customer service skills.

Google
So the place from the outside doesn't look very nice or have restaurant feels. Inside it looks a lot better not super nice but not bad. BUT THE FOOD! AMAZING! I had the chicken breast filled with Mofongo and mashed yuca with beans on the side so the yuca wasn't very flavorful but it's like that it balances out the food it's very delicious the chicken and mofongo oh my so good not to salty it was seasoned just right! Best PR food I have tried! If you don't care what the place looks like and want quality food I recommend 10/10 .

Google
The food is SO good! The atmosphere is also fun and there’s art on the wall for sale. That’s fun. The prices are also really good. 10/10 will definitely be going back! Also the Yuca fries! If you don’t get them you’re doing yourself a disservice lol. They are AMAZING!

Cruz Ruiz Sierra

Google
Delicious, this is the only word I have to describe it. The food is beautifully made so it is both appetizing to the eye and the palette of your Puerto Rican you should visit and if your not it is an amazing experience to try.

Yelp
Really yummy, authentic PR food in Killeen. As in, things I'd never heard of before! The building is really cute inside with lots of art and friendly staff. Portions are huge, so get ready to share at your table because most things do not "reheat" well. Seriously. The food is great when it's fresh, but we over-ordered (because we wanted to try different things) and brought home a lot that got thrown away because it was just not good after refrigerating and reheating. But fresh? Oh YES!! Order any specials. They're bound to be terrific! And make sure to get something with pork--it's so moist and flavorful! Thanks to the staff for making all our dishes with love!

Yelp
OMG soooo good! We got: * Passion Fruit drink * Homemade Lemonade * Corn Fritters (Jengarullos) * Cheese Croquettes * Stuffed Mofongo with Caribbean Jerk Chicken * Sweet Plantains * Chicken Breast Stuffed with Shrimp * Mashed Yuca * Mampasteao Rice * Stuffed Mofongo with Chicken, Pork, and Ham * Grilled Chicken Breast * Fries * Mashed Potatoes * Coconut Flan * Cheese Flan First off, there were four of us and we still left stuffed and with leftovers. Second, the food was tastyyyyyyyy even for this white boy Third, just go there and thank me later. Try everything you can think of and then go back and try some more. It's that good!
google avatar

Dodie T.

Yelp
Casual atmosphere. Fish, seafood, steaks all delicious! Please try the yucca and sweet plantains. Prices are reasonable; bring your own wine or rum for the drinks!

Yelp
This was my first time trying Puerto Rican food and wow! Everything from the service to the food was amazing! I will definitely be back to try the other dishes and dessert. 10/10.

Yelp
First visit here.food was wonderful. Fried pork is what I recommend. Steaks were cooked to perfection. The hello rice was tasty. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. Menu could use better description of what it is. Other than that was a great place
google avatar

Paul W.

Yelp
Good food and okay table service. The food was fresh and authentic, and serving size was pretty good. Menu is a bit pricey at $20-30/plate, but if you want good Puerto Rican food, that's what you'll pay.
google avatar

Nuvia D.

Yelp
Loved the fried plantains and the Yuka fries, not very fond of the Cuban sandwich or the other things. The place itself was pretty empty and I liked the decor inside

Juan S.

Yelp
Best steakhouse in Killeen. We went for a family dinner and we order steaks. Everything is really good in Hierba Fresca Restaurant. We will go again.
google avatar

Yelp
This is the best restaurant we've discovered in years. Just wow. I ordered the shrimp pilon with trifongo, something I didn't even know existed. It's plantain, sweet plantain, and fried yucca turned into a mofongo. Amazingly good. The shrimp with garlic sauce with it in the pilon was awesome too. My wife ordered the pork and plantain sandwich and it had an really good bbq glaze with it that was so good. If they were in Austin, they'd be double the price. It's too bad we never have reason to go to Killeen or we would be here all the time.

Wildelina L.

Yelp
Uno de los mejores restaurantes boricuas en kiloeeen, rica comida, ambiente y trato

Yelp
Great food but unfortunately i got food poisoning from here twice. It's very disappointing especially being Dominican as well.

Yelp
BEST SERVICE! Listen, I'm going to be honest...the food can be hit or miss. It's never been awful, but on occasion it's only decent. I give it 4 stars because in a town where we are treated like crap everywhere we go, this place has always had INCREDIBLE SERVICE. Always. For this reason it will continue to be my favorite place in Killeen. I don't mind sometimes stellar food and sometimes decent food when it means we have a nice evening regardless.

Jonathan M.

Yelp
Nice little place with great artwork on the walls. Very welcoming. Food tasted just like my grandmas and it reminded me of home. The plantain sandwich was the best I've ever had.

Yelp
I have had Puerto Rican food and this place is incredibly yummy!!! All 3 of us had different meals and each meal was scrumptious!!! Mashed malfonngo with cilantro rice and stuffed chicken breast (stuffed with cheese and spinach). The chicken was moist the spinach cooked to perfection the ration from cheese to chicken was great! The cilantro rice was not over powering like you would normally experience. The malfongo (so?) was creamy and authentic and taste buds were delighting in the taste of all 3. The chicken soup was better than Moms and grandmas (yes I dared to go there). The veggies were not over cooked, were fresh and the broth a blend of delicious seasonings. Definitely going to see if the Chef will share that recipe!!! Oh then take a scoop of rice and some of that broth and can I say heavenly???? I had fried yucca, cilantro rice and a shrimp stuffed porchop. I tend to not order pork chop because 9 out of 10 times it's dry. However the pork chop was moist, the shrimp was cooked to perfection and the combo was simply fantastic. The yucca was not oily - cruchy and light. I could have this meal every night! Atmosphere was amazing!!!! This place has character and personality. The servers were so friendly and helpful. Overall this place is authentic, offers the best homemade lemonade, is completely amazing and Eddie the Chef came out to make sure our food was good. A great date place, a great family place, a great place to go with friends.....

Yelp
Amazing! If you want a restaurant like the ones in Austin this it. The food is delicious!! Try the empanadas!

Jonathan D.

Yelp
This place is fire in just 15 minutes they prepared this awesome plate Bandeja Taina. It reminds me of the awesome food of my island
google avatar

Rob C.

Yelp
Their shrimp Mofongo is the best... large shrimp and plenty of them. Only reason they did not get a 5 star is their staff or at least my waiter was very impersonal. Service was ok... but felt like just another number...
google avatar

Tim C.

Yelp
We are new to Puerto Rican food and asked the personable young lady waiting on us for help...and help she did, it's nice dealing with people that get excited about what they do. She recommended some empanadillas, we loved the ground beef and the pizza one and the half sized pernil/pork Sammy, when the Sammy hit the table...I asked to be sure I ordered the half...it was...the whole is about 14 inches long....wow...the meat was tender and full of flavor. They kicked it up another notch when our waitress brought us a trio of sauces that were sublime, one hot for me and two tasty but milder for my wifey. Be sure to ask for some sauces to compliment the already topnotch food.

Freddy M.

Yelp
Amazing food and service. Churrasco steak is beyond delicious. Small local restaurant with true cultural taste from the island.
google avatar

Daniel S.

Yelp
This is the only PR spot to go to in Killeen. I know there's another one that looks like a buffet but this one is amazing. Been going there for about 2 years and they are constantly working on making the place better and improving while keeping the service just as great and the food quality hasn't diminished in all that time.

Yelp
My girl and I were in Killeen for the day and decided to grab a bite to eat. I searched for a place on Yelp and this had some great reviews. We were not disappointed! Omg! Our host Tatiana was the sweetest person, we went with some of her recommendations and everything and I mean EVERYTHING was delicious! I had a medium steak with green rice, vegetables. We had the fried cassava as an appetizer, it was so good, we ordered more to go. My friend had steak and fried plantains. I absolutely have to go back. You will not go wrong eating here.
google avatar

James H.

Yelp
The restaurant is hidden looks like a little house. The food was delicious my fried red snapper was crispy and flaky! My wife's pernil was delicious as well. Great service very friendly restaurant we we well taken care of!

Jean E.

Yelp
Just ate here for the 1st time with my husband, and we'll definitely be back. The food was amazing!!! We left not being able to finish our meals & thoroughly pleased with everything we had. Husband enjoyed the shrimp stuffed pork chop, which was the biggest dam pork chop I've ever seen. I had the roast pork, yellow rice & sweat plaintains, and everything was delicious. Note: they don't sell alcohol, but you can bring your own in. Our waiter said they could even mix it for us. We'll have to remember that for next time.
google avatar

Luis T.

Yelp
The food was fresh and tasted amazing. I had the pernil (pork shoulder), white rice, beans, platano maduro (plantain), and a pastelillo (meat turnover). I was very happy with the authentic taste and will definitely eat there again.
google avatar

Eunice S.

Yelp
Outside looks a bit sketch...but just make your way inside, and you're in for a treat! Beautiful food with amazing presentation. The prices are very reasonable! The ambient is very cute and homey, "Puertorican style". They have areas blocked off for events and games. I really enjoyed the food, and the music is on point, playing the good old classics that really speak to the heart. They also give you a punch cardm and one you have a certan amount of visits, you get a free appitizer. I will go back again!
google avatar

Anselmo A.

Yelp
Amaizing. Second time here. First time for my wife. It's amazing great atmosphere and not to mention the hospitality. Thank you for the amazing experience.

Yelp
Hands down amazinggggg ! The food is well seasoned great portions. Still had enough to take home. I mean its probably the best Spanish food Ive ever had.
google avatar

Yanira C.

Yelp
This was my first time and I can say that now this is my favorite restaurants in the area. If you are visiting...stop by...the food is excellent and the service was outstanding. They went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. Great food!!
google avatar

Yelp
Wow! Great restaurant! Staff was so friendly and welcoming, explained the menu and side dishes we weren't familiar with. We started with chicken empanadas which were excellent. Fresh crust, great texture, chicken was moist and had an excellent taste and texture. We also had shrimp polines and grilled chicken with beans. Wonderful flavors, super service. Very good experience. Will definitely come back again.
google avatar

Yelp
Homemade scratch chicken soup. The food is great and the serving size leave you filled and ready to retire like watchin the game and falling asleep after that Sunday home Cooked meal. Food was excellent.. This was my Third time eating here. Will come back again to Eat at this place

Yelp
Great place for authentic Puertorrican Food, the service was excellent, the flavors of my meal awaken many great memories of my Island, its people and food
google avatar

Barbara N R.

Yelp
4 stars because they were out of mostly everything I wanted to try and that was very disappointing. The food was good but it's not a place I'll continue to go to.
google avatar

Max E.

Yelp
So I end it up here after reading some of Yelps high review. I ordered the pechuga jamón y queso (like a cordon blu with a puertorican flavor twist) and also an empanadilla de carne. Well, it's a Friday, 6pm and this place is empty, most likely because its a 4 day weekend in Ft. Hood and probably most people have left town. (did I mentioned I'm currently in Killeen TX?) But one thing is for sure, the food is pretty good. Empanadilla was not greasy and the "pechuga jamón y queso was pretty good as well. You get to choose up to 2 different sides for your entry, so it's your call. I had mine with french fries and veggies. The fries were season well, not greasy, and the veggies were nice and crisp. Service was prompt and courteous, always checking on you, then again, place was empty, but they did not forget about me. Looks like a house converted into a restaurant, but clean. I would definitely return. Prices were just right for the service and quality of the food. Place is a restaurant with a good puertorican fusion twist for those plates that are not native to Puerto Rico.

Gregory L.

Yelp
I'm leaving Killeen in 5 days and I gotta say that this place really makes me not want to fuckin' leave. 6/5 stars. The chef is a damn God. I had to personally bow at his feet and proceed to tell him that I was not worthy to be in his presence.
google avatar

Frankie M.

Yelp
One of the best Spanish restaurant in Killeen. You have to search or know by word of mouth about this place. It's hidden in the downtown Killeen area. I searched and found it by a friend of mine that lives in Austin. I live in Killeen and never had a idea that this awesome place existed. Beats the other local Spanish by far. Don't believe me? Go visit them and be ready to enjoy the presentation and the food!
google avatar

Danielle P.

Yelp
Really really really good. I have never had Puerto Rican food and I had mofongo with chicken and it was freaking amazing. The waitress was super cute and nice and explained everything on the menu for us uncultured white people. She also gave me extra garlic sauce and this other sauce that I believe was just ketchup and mayo but it was bomb. Everyone I was with loved their food. The only bummer is they don't serve alcohol. But the food and service and portions and everything else made up for the lack of alcohol.
google avatar

Danielle F.

Yelp
I've been here a few times now, and I've been pleased with my food every time. I've tried the chicken nacho tostone appetizer, roasted pork, and fried red snapper, all of which were great! I definitely recommend the tostones as a side or the mashed cassava. My friend is Puerto Rican and usually cooks her own dishes, but she spoke well of this place too!
google avatar

Kelsey H.

Yelp
Great lunch spot. I compare all other Puerto Rican places to Hierba Fresca. By far one of my favorite places in Killeen.
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
In a city full of chains and half assed ethnic joints, this place stands above. Food was authentic and delicious. You know the place is legit when your fellow diners are are mostly puerto rican. However, what truly impressed was the fact that they take pride in presentation of their food. Not just slopped on the plate, but arranged in a manner more likely seen in mid level upscale eateries in Austin, the staff clearly takes pride in the aesthetics of their dishes. Mofongo and yuca were great and artistically presented for an off the beaten path whole in the wall. One of the few places in Killeen worth recommending to someone searching for something worthwhile. Wait staff was very friendly and food was brought quick. Locals need to check this place out. For the price of a frozen rack of ribs from the local chilis you can get a legit meal at great cost. Check it out.

Kayla B.

Yelp
Amazing food, atmosphere & great service!!!! This place is also BYOB so feel free to bring whatever you would like to drink! Hard to find good authentic Puerto Rican food & this place is it!
google avatar

Jay J.

Yelp
Great place the food is authentic. I love the mofungo and the food is so tasty. I would definitely suggest it to my friends. It's warm and comfortable. You can tell that the food is made fresh. I will definitely be back to eat there again.
google avatar

Josh F.

Yelp
Tostones!!!! With a tripleta? Makes me wanna ride a bike while jamming to CardiB. Why cause I like it like dat.

Crystal R.

Yelp
Has the management changed in the last few years? I will start by saying the young man who took my order was extremely helpful and polite. Even recommended some BBQ restaurants to try. The yellow rice was good I must say. The beans were also good. The roast pork was alarmingly salty. When I say salty I mean like straight salt. I couldn't get past it. The chicken was very bland. I was extremely surprised by the lack of consistency through the food. Maybe I caught them on a bad day, maybe it was late and the food had been sitting. I don't know. The food has been pretty good in the past ( a few years ago).
google avatar

Restaurant Karen ..

Yelp
Not bad. Food was good but a bit overpriced. We will probably return for another dish. The service was great and the waiter explained the menu thoroughly. The plantains was spot on but my steak was a tad bit oily for some reason. My wife loved the Red Snapper. I thought it was good too. The food presentation was professionally done.
google avatar

Kasandra R.

Yelp
One of the best places to eat Puerto Rican food in Killeen. Cheap, the food is amazing, great flavors.
google avatar

Emmanuel O.

Yelp
Food is delicious and service is so good. If you haven't gone and gotten the true puertorican flavor this is the place too, you need to experience this amazing service and food by Chef Wally

Liz M.

Yelp
Been here once but I will definitely be going again! Very authentic and delicious, our party was a decent size 6 people and our food arrived at perfect timing, and our server was super professional and helpful!
