Downtown’s Newest Bar Wants to Bring a ‘Rum Renaissance’ to Houston | Eater Houston

"Opening Saturday, February 17 at 306 Main Street in Downtown Houston, this new bar from owner Levi Tatum aims to spark a rum renaissance in the city with a focused ten-cocktail menu of elevated takes on classics like the Mai Tai and Hurricane. Rather than relying on sugary pre-made syrups, cocktails are spiced with unconventional ingredients such as activated charcoal, black pepper tincture, and habanero bitters. Behind the bar are more than 50 rums priced from about $8 to over $20 per shot, with the list expected to grow. Tatum — formerly general manager of Bovine & Barley — says the opening was delayed by Hurricane Harvey’s impact on subcontractors; the venue will initially serve cocktails only while a serious kitchen and full food menu are developed over the next six months pending city approvals. The bar will be open Thursday through Saturday, 4 p.m. to 2 a.m." - Amy McCarthy

Came here to kill some time whilst waiting for my hotel check in time. Barista was really lovely, greeted me as I walked in, immediately asked and prepared my drink. Place itself has a very chill vibe and lots of regulars, despite that they pay attention to new customers too.

A friend and I were looking for a chill place to hang out and draw, and we decided to check out this spot. This place definitely fit the bill and then some. The staff is very welcoming and laidback. They have a fun variety of quality drinks! We tried the butterfly pea lemonade (delightfully refreshing), pb honey bear latte (indulgent and sweet), and the rocket fuel (snuck up on ya, and lives up to its name). The vibe shifts as you sit there for awhile, they change up the music and there’s an eclectic mix of people that shuffle in and out. 🐰 Happy to see a third space vibe, and I would visit again!

Discovered this little cafe by chance and it was the perfect place to land for a refreshing ice tea and cold brew and to recharge our phones. Not a tourist place at all just local folks but the vibe was so chill and welcoming. It’s a very small cafe with not much embellishment but the perfect oasis in a very busy area.

Stumbled upon this coffee shop while waiting for Elmiene’s “live from” next door at damballa. I was pleasantly surprised, staff was amazing, the vibe was chill, there is a sweet coffee shop dog named “cashew” the othe. Drinks are fire! I got the brown sugar caramel latte with almond milk and it was 10/10. Went back the next day to get another one before I left! Bathroom isnt the nicest but it will do! Stop by if you’re in the neighborhood, if you aren’t stop by anyway, it’s easy to go to from manhattan!

I stop by at this coffee shop since I needed a double shot of espresso to keep me up for a party later that night. As u walk in it’s a small place but has a great feel to it. It has low light, a bar to sit at, with tables surrounding. I did not have time to stay and enjoy the comfort that this place had to offer, the gentleman was behind the counter was great as well,

I'm absolutely grateful to have found this place. The vibe is warm and inviting, the prices are surprisingly affordable, and the bartender was incredibly attentive and friendly. I can already see myself becoming a regular here. It's a real blessing to live in a city that has such lovely, alcohol-free social spaces.

Recently visited High and Dry. The space is simple yet inviting. The menu is straightforward. Off the bat that sort of restraint gives High and Dry a refreshingly down-to-earth feel. Garret, the counter person / barista, ran the place solo with a mix of professionalism and coolness. Despite being the only one behind the bar, he was both charming and efficient. Even though he was quite busy, his vibe added to the relaxed atmosphere. Clearly, he enjoys being in the space and that made me feel happy to be there too. I ordered an iced tea, a chamomile blend if I recall. It was refreshing and something I’d definitely have again. What really stood out though about my visit was how welcome I felt. High and Dry seems to attract an even mix of those taking out (I was there around 1 pm), others working quietly, and some just hanging out (like me). At one point, a nice stranger offered me some of his snack, and I had a brief, pleasant chat with the person beside me who thought her seat caught a bit too much sun. These small interactions captured the beauty of the place. It’s clear that Garret (and I hope the entire staff) subtly curates an environment that fosters these pleasant, spontaneous moments. And if that's not your thing, there's plenty of space to keep to yourself too. If I lived closer, I have no doubt High and Dry would be one of my daily stops.

Yelp
Passed by on Wednesday and each seat was taken but was intrigued by the flavors. I asked for dark roast but was informed they only do espresso drinks. They had some funky combos like "maple sea" which has maple syrup and sea salt; "pb & honey " which has peanut butter and honey. All hot coffees are 12oz and all iced coffees are 16oz. I opted for the "brown sugar" hot. It was delicious! Good balance of flavor. The only issue for me was paying $6.53. Not sure how often I'd pay that regardless how much I like it. Besides coffee I saw that they also have games and records.

Yelp
My friends and I came by on a Sunday afternoon. We had a nice chat with Ezra, who was so kind. The space is quiet and cozy and hip. The kava was very drinkable, and there's an option to add ginger or "baklava" flavor to make it a bit easier to drink. It wasn't too tough at all. Feels like a hip neighborhood joint, and I'd love to come back.

Yelp
This spot has all the vibes! I come here during the day to work because it's never too loud and everyone is always very friendly. It's also open until midnight which is rare for coffee shops.

Yelp
Súper groovy Dry Bar and Cafe. Great co-working space by day and to socialize through the evening. Many different flavors of Kombucha on tap. Great vibes! Lovely owners!

Yelp
This is High & Dry, on a Tuesday at 10am. Why bother serving coffee and advertising as a coffee shop if you're not going to be open on 10am on a Tuesday? DO NOT GO TO THIS PLACE. Also the drinks suck. AVOID!!!
