Brewery destinations around Colorado to visit | Eater Denver

"High Hops is more than a brewery. It’s part garden center, part home brew shop, and part hop farm producing more than 50 different varieties of hop plants — several of which end up in their brews. Plus, 40 taps means the brewery has a ton of styles to sample year-round, whether you’re into wheats or wee heavies." - Monica Stockbridge

Nice atmosphere and a good selection of beers, cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages. Some light snacks are also available if you want something to munch on. Lots of outdoor seating is available with nice views of the mountains and hop field. Great place to kickback and relax after throwing a round at Oxbow disc golf course.

Nowhere near as good as it used to be. Regulations prevent it from being a family friendly place. I used to go out of my way to meet my northern Colorado friends here because of the ambience, but now those days are over. Hope the distillery business works out for the owners because the taphouse experience is ruined.

Google
Had a great experience here. Originally showed up for the garden area, to buy soil and pots for my garden. Didn't realize the brewery/distillery are apart of it. Its kinda aweaome walking around drinking a cold draft while shopping. The service was super friendly and Informative. I wasn't prepared for the interesting choices they had on the menu. Luckily they offer samples before you commit. Can't tell you how many beers I've choked down because of that. The green house and store set a really chill atmosphere. And if that wasn't your idea chill area they have a large outdoor seating area.

Went here with friends a couple years ago and it was positive experience—the highlight being the cat running around the greenhouse. I have since moved down the road and was looking forward to becoming a regular and supporting our local businesses…but apparently I am no longer welcomed as I had a baby 11 months ago. There’s a lot of breweries in the area who are family friendly so that’s where our business will need to go for the next 20 years.

Google
High Hops offers decent, independently made microbrews with an exceptional, eclectic atmosphere to enjoy them in. The garden center connected to the microbrewery is ingenious and the addition of the distillery is a plus. We went to High Hops today and it was in the 90’s and our party stayed for one beer and honestly it was just too hot and muggy in the place; and we even tried to take cover in shade outside on their patio. My suggestion to the owners would be to invest in an air-conditioning unit so on very hot days your customers will be more inclined to visit and stay longer. We ended up going to another well-known microbrewery in Fort Collins after the one beer at High Hops; and this next microbrewery had climate control inside. Our party ended up getting two beers at this place. High hops could’ve had our business, but it was just too unbearable. We originally are from two other states were the climate is worse and more muggy.

Google
This place has really gone downhill. Months ago, they disallowed anyone under 21 so they lost all the young families. Then a few months ago they decided to overtake the back of the brewery, half the inside seating and 2/3 of the outdoor seating with garden nursery crap and they also cut their menu selection in half. In addition to that they are only selling canned cocktails (limited selection) which are so-so. It's shocking how they went from one of the best and coolest breweries to hang out to the worst brewery in the region. Quite sad really and very unfortunate.

Google
I haven’t missed a trivia in years here. Great drinks and a fun social setting for pub trivia. I miss it. We’re coming up on 4 months of no trivia. Not sure why. I’m hopeful I’ll be able to change this review if they open back up for summer. I’d love to be able to get a drink after work, but I can’t anymore because they close so early.

Google
Absolutely amazing. We came on a Super Bowl Sunday, and we came a little before they were closing (so sorry!) They have the best vibes. Plants and beer. What else could you ask for? They also host different events like Gardening 101 and clay pottery classes. Oh yeah, and great beer!! I got a gluten free sour and my fiancé got an IPA and we were definitely NOT disappointed. We highly recommend! And when we come back from New Mexico for our wedding in Estes, we’ll be stopping here for some beer first. ❣️

Yelp
I feel compelled to share my extremely disappointing experience with The Heart Distillery (DBA High Hops Brewery) and their NFT whiskey program now. In 2021, I purchased two NFTs for an estimated $1000.00 from The Heart Distillery, which promised two 5-gallon barrels of whiskey (bottling some 15-20 bottles) along with the barrels they were aged in. As part of the agreement, purchasers were asked to hold the NFT for two years before claiming their product. After patiently waiting the full two years, I reached out to redeem what was promised. Initially, Zach from The Heart Distillery responded and assured me that they would hold my purchase indefinitely (even though the NFT didn't go as planned for them as he stated) until I was able to make a road trip to pick it up -- a fair and appreciated offer at the time. (emails to confirm) Unfortunately, that's where the communication stopped. Despite multiple follow-up attempts via email to a few different email addresses to confirm a pickup date and time, Zach failed to respond each time. I've now been left completely in the dark, with no way to redeem what I paid for. This isn't just poor customer service -- it feels dishonest and disrespectful to customers who trusted them with a significant upfront investment. I cannot in good conscience recommend The Heart Distillery/High Hops Brewery to anyone. This experience has left me feeling misled and taken advantage of yet Zach continues to do business as if nothing was taken from anyone. If they have any intention of honoring what was sold, I'm still open to resolution (you know where to reach me) -- but based on their lack of response, I won't hold my breath.

Yelp
Such a fun spot! It's wonderful to have a cool, local place to take beer and non-beer drinkers - the seasonal cocktails are always outstanding so be sure to check them out! They don't rely on drinks and vibe alone though, the service is what really makes this place special. Every server we have had has been attentive, fun, and sweet, and really transforms this into a "third space" that Windsor benefits from as a community. If you're lucky you may even get a visit from Rajah, the Queen (aka, shop kitty). Please just make sure you check the hours before you go - they aren't really open the hours you might expect for a brewery/distillery. We've had a few disappointing evenings rolling up after work to find out that they were already closing. It's worthwhile to find the time while they are open to visit!

Yelp
KIDS ARE ALLOWED!!!, only because they treat you like one. Go anywhere else but here. We didn't know the new no child policy since we came years ago, but we abided and had grandma carry the baby in the garden center while we grabbed a beer. The staff stalked and followed grandma around to make sure she didn't dare take a wrong step. One younger bartender mentioned "oh, how do you know where your child is if you're here drinking?". Peculiar, Big Thompson, Berthoud Brewing, Weldwerks, anywhere but here is better. It seems they got high off of enforcing COVID rules and needed to keep it going somehow.

Yelp
We rarely come here because quite frankly the beer is mediocre at best. Colorado has too many amazing breweries to waste time and money at a place that's just ok. We went recently with my infant daughter and were turned away at the door because they have a 21 and over policy. We were recommended several breweries in a 10 minute drive range that do allow children. All of which have better beer and food. We only came here to show my parents a new brewery while in town. This is such a weird hill to have your business die on. Check out Peculier right down the road. Great food, updated menu every week with new beers, and family friendly.

Foco N.

Yelp
My new favorite brewery!! Tasty beer, a greenhouse, resident cat, and no kids! Will be back
google avatar

Kristi M.

Yelp
I can see this being THE spot in the fall but I do not recommend on a hot summer day. There is no A/C in the greenhouse/brewery. The bartenders were very friendly. I'll have to come back when it cools off to actually enjoy the spot.

Yelp
Super unique brewery/distillery/plant and garden center in one (but operate as separate businesses). The patio is hands down one of the best. Lots of varied seating. I love how it overlooks the hops they grow to use in their beers. We came on a Thursday afternoon and really enjoyed our time here. They serve food including brats and other snacks that pair well with beer Thursday - Sunday. I also appreciate that they are 21+ only. Service from Mijia was fabulous and Raj (the cat) even helped out a bit too. We tried a flight that was all of their flagship beers, which is a wide variety for everyone's taste. The Cold One - Colorado Craft Lager Blueberry Wheat Pinkalicious - Sour Ale with Lemon Verbena & Raspberries The Hoppy One - IPA Dr. Pat's Double IPA I really liked the double IPA and the lager is light and crisp. The sour was not too sour, but a great summer sipper. They have lots of cans to go! We would def be regulars here if we lived closer, and will not hesitate to stop when in the area next.

Yelp
I was a long-time customer, a local who frequented the brewery and distillery. Used to be able to come in, bring a sandwich and have a beer. They have apparently stopped allowing outside food. That's ok, no problem! The problem I have was the staff only enforces that rule selectively. After I was told I had to dispense of my food or leave, I threw it away, because I was almost done anyway. But then, I noticed that there were three other tables where the people were consuming food from outside! I have no problem with policies and rules! But this was discrimination. I waited for a bit to see how they might enforce this rule on other patrons, they didn't. The only difference, other than my nationality, between me and the other parties was that I am much older, I was alone, only having one drink, whereas the others were younger groups of two or more and obviously drinking more. I felt that it was clear, the bartender had singled me out and chose to not enforce the no-food rule on the others. This was at one time a wonderful place to come and enjoy a beer. Something has happened, the staff is not as friendly, and some customers are no longer important. I was humiliated by this and won't be back nor will I anymore recommend High Hops to friends or family.
google avatar

Shay S.

Yelp
Great place to sit outside and have a few beers. Also it is connected to The Heart Distillery so there's something for everyone. Beers are actually some of the best craft beers I've had. Very unique brewery with a cool greenhouse.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
Sadly they've chosen to alienate a large percentage of customers by going 21+. Great open outdoor space that was perfect for kiddos and we often enjoyed stopping for a beer or two but looks like they're out of the rotation, which is fine since the beer is average and we mainly went for the space that was great for kids. If you're in Windsor and want a brewery go to Peculiar, beer is a lot better and they've got great outdoor space too.
google avatar

John H.

Yelp
High hops has been on a downward spiral since Covid. The newest 21+ only entrance policy is total crap. Every other brewery and distillery in Colorado allows for kids. Don't waste your time going to high hops. If you are in the area go to Peculiar, Mashlabs, Mighty River or Timnath Beerwerks. All those places love family's, high hops has lost a customer for life.
google avatar

Julie B.

Yelp
A garden center walked into a bar and found a distillery. What? Yes. You will find all three here and all three are worth the trip. High Hops has been a go-to brewery for me for a few years now and they continue to be at the top of that short list. Creative brews, ambiance, and great staff continues to be the standard here. A great place to bring your puppers and kids. How can you go wrong with a brewery that grows their own hops? You can't.
google avatar

Vincent G.

Yelp
No babies or kids allowed. Just go to Peculier down the road instead where there's better beer and a nicer space.

Jon M.

Yelp
we went to High Hops for the first time. The beer was good (had the red ale) and the atmosphere of the nursery was really great. the tap room was nice and calm BECAUSE NO KIDS ARE ALLOWED! It's about time there is a brewery where you are not constantly bombarded by other people's kids running around like it's a daycare center. we will be back!
google avatar

Don B.

Yelp
Great. Keep your kids at home. Who wants to hear a bunch of whining kids when you're out enjoying a nice beer.
google avatar

Alisa W.

Yelp
We drove out of our way to go back to this place and was very excited but then we learned we we couldn't go because we couldn't take our children. Haven't felt this frustrated since I visited Utah as NoCo is so family friendly. We won't be going back.

Kendall S.

Yelp
The service and atmosphere are great! I come here for trivia nights and they're a lot of fun. I think my only critique would be that the cocktails are not the best, so recommend stick to the beer options
google avatar

Miranda M.

Yelp
Pros: Tons of seating outside, lots of beer choices, an amazing blackberry sour called Puckerberry Cons: Beer is consistently warm. The past few times I've gone, I noticed they took steaming hot glasses right out of the dishwasher to fill with beer. This time, I didn't see that happen, but the beer was not cold at all. I got a taster tray and my friend got a full pour and none of my tasters, nor her beer, were cold. I'm torn.
google avatar

Mike E.

Yelp
I come to this brewery often just to feel the conviviality of my community, even if I don't directly partake myself. Perhaps it's the open atmosphere, the orchard, and the nursery nearby that makes one feel a sense of simplicity and connectedness to the wider world of nature. You really have to try the King Ape Imperial Hefeweizen, it's no joke one of the best beers I've ever tasted, and the strength of it gets me to that happy place where I love everyone just a little bit quicker.
google avatar

Jeni S.

Yelp
The only brewery that doesn't allow children, and they are extremely rude about it. We will never return. Take your business to peculiar, they're family friendly, have a better beer selection and food.
google avatar

Tim R.

Yelp
Turned down a large group over a 6 week old baby. What a joke of a place. Take your money elsewhere.
google avatar

Amanda F.

Yelp
Wasn't allowed to enter due to being with my family which included a child. Was told by someone at the parking lot "we are 21 and up now due to the corona virus pandemic". Since the bars/breweries have re opened we have never encountered this nor does the logic make any sense. CoVid doesn't pick and choose who is affected based off of age. We will continue to support other small businesses & breweries who aren't afraid to serve those 0-20 years old.
google avatar

Jill C.

Yelp
Very disappointed. We were turned away because we had our son and niece with us. We watched as other famies were also turned around at the door. It's this establishments right I suppose but we won't be back. Seems silly with so many other great choices in CO to turn business away.
google avatar

Yelp
We go to High Hops every time we visit family in Loveland and we love it here! I really like their habanero and jalopeno infused beers. The habanero honey is super interesting but I can only have one because it is quite spicy. This trip, I had the honey hemp red beer - very good! I also had the spray tan - a very good blood orange! I had a taste of the Pollo loco, sour pants and the Bourbon barrel aged beer. Seriously, all are very good! Also, we love, love, love Billy's foodtruck. He has such great takes on sandwiches. I've had the ravioli sandwich which is super interesting but my favorite still remains to be the green chili Philly. Yum!!! He is great at customizing your order and making to-go orders. We usually bring home a bunch of mini tacos for the kids. The brewery at the nursery is such a good idea. You can shop the garden and home decor or enjoy the patio area for some live music on sunny summer afternoons. I haven't yet made my way to the distillery area but I'm sure it won't be too long before I try the liquors too. Such a smart business and great way to stay busy all seasons!
google avatar

Jill H.

Yelp
Fun afternoon and terrific first visit to High Hops. Love the variety of beer styles. Truly something for everybody! Lots of seating options. Patio with Mountain views, back by the greenhouse. Also, the staff was super friendly and helpful, making recommendations and giving small tasters to help me decide what to order.
google avatar

Craig S.

Yelp
Really enjoyed this brewery..great suds and one of the nicest atmospheres ever..great work Yaw'll!
google avatar

Erin E.

Yelp
I don't have little kids but I took my 22 yo niece to go get some flowers and then wanted to grab a beer with her. She didn't bring her id (she was going to get flowers) so I told her to get a root beer. They literally did not allow her to get a root beer and sit on the patio. Come on! They then carded me as well. I'm so so clearly over 21. Come on. So illogical to the point of just plain silly. Empower your intelligent employees to use their good judgement.
google avatar

David C.

Yelp
High Hops Brewery is our favorite brewery around. We have been going since they first opened. We love the relaxed environment, GREAT BEER, and the fact that it is 21+. It is so nice to relax and have a beer without kids running around. The owners are some of the nicest people you will ever meet.

John U.

Yelp
My wife met a group of us on the patio with our 3 month old baby and they told us we had to leave because they don't allow babies. She wasn't drinking, baby wasn't crying. No one was even on the patio except my group. Pretty wild.

David E.

Yelp
Not so great - not family friendly on the patio ( no kids) allowed on a hot summer day). No food. No ice at the bar. Don't recommend. This place has gone downhill

Renee L.

Yelp
This has been our go to for a decade. We love the beer and the atmosphere. It's nice to be adults only now. Too many places have kids running around without supervision. The beer is is great. The Weize One for a great Hefeweizen. The Hoppy One is a perfect IPA and the Dark One is the best dark beer in NOCO.
google avatar

M S.

Yelp
The atmosphere is delightful and the beer is tasty! I enjoyed the variety of flavors in my flight. Both of the IPA's I drank were outstanding. If I lived nearby, I would be a regular here.

Michael S.

Yelp
So tried to go tonight with my 10 month old twins and was turned away saying nobody under 21 allowed. Well we went to peculiar ales in town instead. Won't be going back to high hops again.... peculiar ales was good and had a great family atmosphere with lots of kids.. Better beer elsewhere with better atmosphere.. see ya high hops!!!!!!!!

Alexandra L.

Yelp
NOT FAMILY FRIENDLY- We were so excited to try this place because of the plants and the beer, as soon as we walked in they told us they wouldn't seat or serve us because of the "21+" rule. I was holding my 5mo old baby. Literally the only place in Northern Colorado with this rule, we asked why and they said "safety." Upon reading other reviews the previous excuse was COVID. Either way, completely ridiculous and will not be coming back.
google avatar

Kylie G.

Yelp
Used to be a favorite spot. They no longer cater to a family. Children (from newborns in a car seat up to 21) aren't allowed at all. They are a brewery and hold brewery hours (they aren't a bar) and no other brewery in NOCO has this rule. We will take our business to places that appreciate parents need a drink too.

B C.

Yelp
I wanted to like them, I really did. Looks like a great outdoor space with a stage. Unfortunately, "all people" are not allowed, unless you are the 21+ adult or the furry kind. I understand a business can make their own rules, but if you are planning a trip with the family including kids who enjoy music and the outdoors - this is not the place for you. So disappointed.
google avatar

Mike S.

Yelp
An amazing micro brewery with excellent customer service. Their beer is awesome and the hang out area is superb! I love this place!!!
google avatar

Deniese L.

Yelp
I had high hop(e)s when I saw the lovely patio but they fell pretty quickly when I didn't like my first beer choice. In these uncertain times when tasters are not practical (I get it) most breweries replace your full pour with your second choice at no charge. Not here. My first choice was "The Dark One" it is a milk stout but tasted like a bourbon barrel aged beer. I took one sip and took it back to the beer window. I was charged full price for my second choice "Chaotic Neutral". It was better, a fresh moderately hoppy beer with a clean finish. It is too bad that the service was not better because that would have gone a long way to getting me back. As it is there are far better, friendlier breweries to visit in the area.

John V.

Yelp
Beer with almost no food (two kinds of brats). That eliminates any time you would want a drink with a (at least an average) meal. Not a favorite that I would choose to return to.

Jennie C.

Yelp
Had a terrible experience here with my family. We brought my one year old daughter not knowing the 21+ rule, which was no big deal, we decided two of us were going to take turns checking out the gardening section with my daughter while the other two had a drink. Even after my daughter was safe with her aunt in the gardening section, a staff member confronted me about the safety of my daughter and seemed very concerned that we were drinking in the presence of a one year old. At this point we had not even ordered a beer yet. It's totally out of line and made me feel terrible as a mother to be questioned by a stranger. We were following their rule and still felt like we were in trouble. It was very uncomfortable, no one wants to feel like they are in kindergarten when visiting a brewery. We left without taking two sips of our beer and had a great time with my daughter at Peculiar Brewing down the rode. Skip this place.

Mason N.

Yelp
Everything about this place and the people here suck. Only old people who are saggy and walk around without their shoes on, making out with each other... they're far more welcome than a family. Gross.
google avatar

Francene T.

Yelp
It's a garden center. No, it's a brewery...it's a garden center...wait! It's both! This is the most eclectic brewery I've ever visited. The tasting room literally shares indoor space with a garden center. Kinda makes sense, since hops are an attractive plant... High Hops has put some thought into their setup: they offer a series of flights at different prices. The Flagship Flight gives you five generous samples from light to dark for $9.50. For those that prefer options, you can do a pick-n-choose for $13. There are six or so tables indoors at the bar, but they've created a really good outdoor seating area - some tables are covered, some are open...there's a covered stage for live music and even a few outdoor games. Along the outdoor seating area is the field where they grow their hops. Their beers are an interesting mix - The Golden One: a lemon ale that's so light it's barely there. The Witty One: an american wheat beer. I'm not big on wheats but hubby enjoyed it. The Honey One: an american red with a touch of sweetness - this was my second fav The Power of Zeus: an american pale ale, very hoppy and malty. Big fan of this one! The Dark One: a milk stout. Try as I might, I just can't learn to love a milk stout... We spent an enjoyable couple of hours here then browsed the garden center on our way back to the car. I think High Hops will be a regular stop for us when we're in the area.
google avatar

Joe H.

Yelp
A very capable brewery. Nice atmosphere - interesting combination of a nursery/garden center with a brewery. Beers were very good, and reasonable on price - all except the custom flight: it was spendy enough I declined. Otherwise, I would have liked to try a flight. Still - bought a growler and a six-pack to take home after. Also, had the dog with me, but I kept him on the patio, and no one bothered us about him. In fact, someone nicely brought him a bowl of water. Will definitely be back here for more beer in the future. But I'd like to try to sync it with a food truck or other catering - the place would be a notch higher with a good food service to go with the beer.
google avatar

Yelp
We live in Fort Collins and have been to every brewery in that town. We've been putting off coming here for several months. That was a mistake. This place is amazing. By far my favorite Northern Colorado brewery. I wish I lived in Windsor now. The beer garden is huge. They have more seating than most stores restaurants, live music, great service, and amazingly awesome good beer.
google avatar

Brittany H.

Yelp
High Hops was the last of my "new" breweries on my latest FoCo/Loveland area brewery tour. And thankfully it was because these brews were seriously fantastic! Upon hearing the name, I thought this place would only be serving up hoppy beers, which would make me steer clear. No point in imbibing beers that make my nose scrunch up! But thankfully, they certainly serve the spectrum of your traditional favorites: pilsner, American red, American pale ale, Belgian ale, and milk stout. Everything had a solid flavor and needless to say, I enjoyed every drop of my flight! High Hops, I'm assuming, gets their name from the fact that they grow their own hops and other ingredients on site! My friend and I arrived in the dark, so it was tough to really experience this, but you could see the lovely fields west of the tap room. I can only image what a beautiful view one must get during the day or a sunset from here! And the view of the mountains has to be fantastic. Another cool thing about this brewery is that there is a garden attached as well and there are even some tables and chairs for you to enjoy such a lovely atmosphere. High Hops immediately shot to the top of my favorites because of the great beers, local ingredients, and fantastic atmosphere. Now, if only Windsor wasn't so far away! But hey, it's well worth a day trip!

Sandra O.

Yelp
Their beer is fine; but, they do not let you bring your kids on site, which is a very recent and unfortunate change. Do not bother going here if you have someone younger than 21 in tow. Go to peculiar brewing instead. Better beer there too and food.

Ash S.

Yelp
High Hops has a great atmosphere and wonderful beer. It has a wide selection, and some very funny staff. The owners are incredibly hard working and passionate people. On top of that, there are events and classes happening there constantly and on top of that you can find great Food Trucks as well as a Garden Center and Distillery near by. Mostly though, what makes High Hops unique is the hilarious and laborious staff and refreshing beverages.
google avatar

Ashley R.

Yelp
The only reason it is getting 2 stars is because the bartenders were super nice. Beer was skunky. It was so of the worst beer I have tried. Place itself was really cool. Looks to me like a local hang out. Tried their APA and IPA and couldn't even finish them. Not worth the stop at all!
google avatar

Leila R.

Yelp
This is my favorite go-to spot for good beer when I'm visiting my mom and sister in Fort Collins. Beer: My favorite. Do yourself a favor, and get a growler. I always get the Noble One. Be careful. It's 10.5 abv and doesn't taste like it. Ambiance: Don't let this place fool you. It half garden shop/half brewery. Park and walk around to the west side of the building. That's where the taps are. You can sit outside when it's nice. Or when it's cold, they often have live bands at night in a covered area, so you're still warm. They have some food vendors. I've seen a wood oven pizza vendor there and then some guys with large vats of mac and cheese and other foods inside. But I've always filled up on beer. The music has always been great, too. Service: The people here are really friendly. I go back every time I'm in town. Love it here.
