"Luis Gonzalez and Nathan Kruse’s coffee pop-up at wine bar High Treason channels club energy into a morning crowd: “Caffeine is the controlled substance on hand. While the coffee is tremendous and clever, the two baristas are well past the San Francisco proving grounds of the Coffee Movement; the move here is to dress good and vibe out.” Gonzalez and Kruse are both musicians — Gonzalez a DJ who takes over restaurants like Verjus and Mister Jiu’s Moongate Lounge, Kruse a pianist and singer — and the name nods to an uptempo subset of techno, so the project intentionally collides with San Francisco’s queue-and-events culture. The pop-up’s first birthday on Sunday, August 3 will lean fully into that energy: starting at 9 a.m. there won’t even be coffee for sale, two primo DJs will take turns spinning vinyl, and free coffee will be passed out as a way to get people dancing. “It’s always been about the coffee being competition level,” Gonzalez says, “while having the best music possible.” The event-driven, look-and-vibe emphasis means that, while not typically a full-on coffee party, the concept points to a broader shift in cafe culture toward daytime socializing and sober gatherings." - Paolo Bicchieri
"High Treason is a moody, skylight-lit wine bar in the Richmond where we go to impress someone who still makes weekly trips to Amoeba Music, and grab an easy dinner without feeling any pressure to change out of sweats. Records are always playing, music-themed trivia nights happen monthly, and there’s a long menu of wine, sake, cocktails, and cider. And when you inevitably get hungry after dissecting one potentially flirty DM from your crush for an hour straight, there’s a Hawaiian menu by the Unco Frank’s pop-up." - julia chen 1, ricky rodriguez, lani conway
"Tucked between the Clement Street lineup of pan-Asian eateries and old-time Irish pubs, veteran sommeliers Michael Ireland (The French Laundry, Quince) and John Vuong (Ame, Gary Danko) delivered just what the Inner Richmond needed upon High Treason’s 2016 arrival. Customers are offered a taste before selecting from a well-curated selection of wines by the glass. The list rotates while they spin the vinyl; occasionally, High Treason hosts live DJs." - Dianne de Guzman
"When you’re meeting up with one of the hundreds of eligible SF singles who have “aspiring DJ” in their bio, the safest bet is to suggest High Treason. This Richmond wine bar is constantly spinning records, so you can bob your head along to Lauryn Hill before asking “So…how long have you been in the city?” If you get hungry, they also have a short menu of Hawaiian dishes from the Unco Frank’s pop-up, or you can keep the night going at one of the many restaurants nearby." - lani conway, ricky rodriguez, julia chen 1
"High Treason is a relaxed wine bar in the Richmond with an impressive vinyl collection and plenty of wine, sake, cocktails, and cider. Another reason we keep coming back: the menu of excellent Hawaiian dishes courtesy of Unco Frank’s. Crisp furikake fries are loaded with spam, kimchi, and sriracha aioli, and fried rice with Portuguese sausage is packed with salty-sweet flavor. They’re both exactly what you want to munch on during music-themed trivia nights, which go down once a month, or early-in-the-game dates." - julia chen 1, lani conway
