15 Fabulous Cocktail Bars to Try in Phoenix

"Owned by cocktail savants Libby Lingua and Mitch Lyons (who create high-volume cocktail programs for other venues under the brand name Two Hands Consulting), Highball, perched on the second floor of an historic building, is a cozy yet sophisticated hangout. The wildly creative cocktail menu comes with helpful descriptors such as “velvety, smooth, tantalizing” and “quirky, ripe, exotic.” Try the geeky, Curacao-blue Typhoon Lagoon or anything else that catches your fancy." - Nikki Buchanan, Jamie Killin

Google
Absolutely loved the place. The cocktails were amazing. The ambiance and the service was also the best. Dan was a great server and was so knowledgeable about all the cocktails and flavors! They have small bites. We ordered cheese dip and chips and that was good. There are stairs you need to climb as soon as you enter ( didn’t see an elevator) in case you have broken foot or something. We were gonna go back this week but a friend broke her foot this week.. and realized this may not work for us this week. Will just have to take her back when she is better for the awesome cocktails

Google
Celebrated a special night and the minute we were seated for our reservation, it was the first comment the waitress made and gifted us two shots on the house for our special night. Not only the small detail that was memorable but the shot was very tasty. I love the decor and dark mood, the staff definitely knows their drinks and menu. They provided us with recommendations and kept checking in on us to make sure we weren't needing anything. 10/10!

What an amazing experience, the staff are such friendly and passionate individuals. The atmosphere is dark but welcoming. The drinks are delicious and crafted beautifully

UDATE 2025 - Highball Cocktail Bar in midtown Phoenix continues to solidify its place as one of the city’s premier cocktail destinations, combining cozy neighborhood charm with an elevated, award-winning cocktail program. Known for its welcoming atmosphere and exceptional hospitality, Highball attracts an eclectic mix of adventurous drinkers, industry professionals, and late-night cocktail enthusiasts. On this visit, we explored their latest inventive creations, including the *Heart of Stone*, a complex blend of Oaxacan mole-inspired flavors with sotol, tequila, whisky, and pasilla chile; the *Monkey Business*, a rich combination of bonded bourbon, dark Jamaican rum, Madeira, salted banana, and fermented cacao; and the *Saturday Night Special*, a smoky, layered mix featuring lapsang souchong-infused rye, bourbon, Scotch, and Palo Cortado sherry. Even after multiple visits, Highball's ever-evolving menu and creative approach to cocktails continue to surprise and delight, keeping it firmly on my top 10 list of Phoenix bars.

Almost lost hope in the perfect cocktail spot…until. Highball! Mitch was fantastic. Staff was welcoming and embracing. The bar is dark, candle lit and elusive. Perfect solo or date night. Cocktails are special. I mean special in tailored, crafted and loved, discussed librations with Mitch. Tailored my taste perfectly. Offered his recommendations respectfully. Great area recommendations too. The popcorn..top 3. Thank you Highball. See you tomorrow night.

Always have to make a stop when visiting Phoenix! Cocktails are ridiculously good, the whole staff is so nice and whole bar / lounge is beautiful and cozy to hang out in

Yelp
Have you ever been to Killer Whale in Roosevelt row? Well this place gives me that vibe but in a classy form. They have moody lighting, couch seating, table seating (great for dates) and my favorite, the bar seating! We got to see the bartender in action and see all the drinks come out. One person even ordered the elote popcorn which was massive! I wish I got that. I ordered the Crazy Never Dies cocktail. This was very fruity and tropical... think lime, pineapple, grapefruit, tequila, rum, and more. It may have had the most ingredients. I enjoyed it but i wouldn't recommend it if you don't like fruity sweet drinks. Now the Tokyo drift was better! It came with a guava candy on the side and felt more refreshing and fruity. (Tequila, rum, guava, rose aperitif, and lime). We just had one drink here and left to go to another. Overall I enjoyed it and there's plenty of free parking in the parking lot.

Yelp
Tasty innovative drinks served in a loungey space on the second floor. I've driven by here but never been to this spot in Central Phoenix til my friend visited from the Bay! We got the Tokyo Drift, Book of Wei and Disco Panda and each was tasty and well crafted. Loved the Asian influence in these options! Friends got an Old Fashioned and Disco Panda. They have a wide variety of drinks so you'll please any cocktail lover by visiting here. Food options are limited so if you want to fill up beforehand or eat after you'll be looking elsewhere as this is more like a lounge/high end bar. Note they do have drink minimums when they are busy to turn over tables faster.

Yelp
So glad I finally checked this place out and now I know why it was voted one of the best bars in North America. So many cocktails with ingredients I never heard of. I went with Crazy Never Dies which was pretty tasty - grapefruit repo, sherry, lime and some other ingredients. The shrimp remoulade was very flavorful and you had your choice of chips. Of course I got half and half. A spicy chip and a lime chip. So crunchy and full of flavor. I loved the vibe here, very cozy and the bartenders were non-stop making drinks.
google avatar

Yelp
One of the best cocktail bars in the valley! Bartenders were so nice and friendly and gave us great recommendations. The ambience was very lowkey and vibey and great for a date night or with a group of friends. I think the cocktails were reasonably priced depending on what you got. They also offer some bites!
google avatar

Rong R.

Yelp
Came here with my husband and some of our friends, and the drinks were amazing! I personally liked the book of Wei coz the oyster leaf on top was such a unique touch! The rest drinks we ordered were impressive too. You can see that the bartender put a lot of thoughts on creating those cocktails. Highly recommend!

Yelp
I had dinner with a friend and didn't want to quite go home yet. Saw this on Yelp a while ago and decided to check it out. An interesting mix of postgame fans and connoisseurs. Got seated at the bar and ordered the Saturday Night Special on a Friday night (Smokey Old Fashion) and watched as the bartender meticulously prepared the drink. Was going to go, but decided to check out one more beverage- the North meets South. Both whisky drinks were immaculate and mixed to perfection. Will definitely be back with friends who appreciate great cocktails!!!

Yelp
Vibey cocktail bar! The service was great and so were the drinks. They had a wide array of their own cocktails but could still make traditional drinks. I also really enjoyed their little shot options they had.
google avatar

Dennys J.

Yelp
This place is a real speak easy! They have multiple really good cocktails, but of course they are in the pricier side, although they do give a very responsible amount of alcohol :) Its very close to DTPX.
google avatar

Daisha W.

Yelp
Really cool place! The music is dope. The drinks are strong. The bartenders are so so informative and friendly. A nice dim lit bar for sure
google avatar

Destiny F.

Yelp
Amazing award winning bar. These cocktails speak for itself, I love the cozy vibe and the service was outstanding. I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
I am an atmosphere person, and highball absolutely has a fantastic atmosphere. With tufted leather furniture and a crystal chandelier, what more could you want? The bar is at the top of candlelit stairs. It's very cozy indeed! We have two great servers, and we ordered four cocktails. I'm not going to lie, I did actually order a drink just because it was served in a tiger mug. I looked around and it looked like there were a lot of those tiger mugs around, so I may not be the only one. We also ordered some popcorn, which tasted absolutely delicious. We will definitely return to Highball!
google avatar

Yelp
It was OK. Drinks were creative in concept but the execution didn't land. our drinks were too sweet and not boozy enough to balance it out. The flavors could use some balancing. The dark relaxing setting is nice but that was ruined by weirdly loud, bass heavy, uptempo music. It was just a miss for me, particularly at $45 (tip included) for two drinks

Yelp
Always a great experience here! One day I probably would like to see a live guitarist or saxophonist here.

Yelp
wait. omg. this place is HANDS DOWN one of the BEST bars i've been to. my cousin's husband brought me here while i was in town last saturday (5/26) and i was blown away. easy parking access. did need to take the stairs up. standard bar , nothing special interior wise, cozy with the seating options if you don't want to sit directly at the bar. AMAZING staff. we had the honor to meet (i believe) one of the cofounders of the place and she was honestly the best: she was super informative and helpful in deciding which drinks to choose; especially with my cousin who is currently pregnant, they were able to create DELICIOUS mocktails for her base off of what she likes to normally drink. i normally don't like to drink that much because bartenders tend to pour heavy and the taste of the alcohol overpowers the drinks; however this place MASTERED it. all of the drinks paired well with the other ingredients and they all tasted absolutely amazing. and before you say "they probably underpoured", we physically saw them pour the alcohol and they were very giving, which means that they just know what flavors compliment the alcohol and created delicious cocktails & shots. we got about 2 drinks each and 2 shots each but wished we could drink more! unfortunately we had dinner reservations to go to but i HIGHLY recommend coming here and i can't wait to come back! we got the PTO shot and peach fernet shot, Yuz about it, Espresso Martini, Crazy never dies & smooth criminal; all phenomenal!

Yelp
This is one of my favorite cocktail spots in all of Phoenix. Every time they've shaken up their menu, I've been worried I wouldn't like it as much, but I've never been disappointed. I tend towards funky, fruity, tiki drinks while my husband gravitates more to boozy, nutty, classic-inspired cocktails, and we both always find multiple things to enjoy. I recommend sitting at the bar so you can see the drinks being made and get thoughtful descriptions and recommendations from the bartenders. Still, their lounge area is cool. The overall look of the place is dark, sleek, and sexy-- great for a date. Prices are on par for a cocktail this good in downtown/midtown. They don't really serve full meals, but they have a small plates menu. All in all, Highball is worth going outside the beaten path of RoRo/the rest of downtown.

Yelp
Highball Cocktail Bar, located in the midtown neighborhood of Phoenix at the southwest corner of 7th Ave and McDowell, may seem unassuming from the outside but exudes sophistication as soon as you ascend the stairs. Developed by Libby Lingua and Mitch Lyons, the bar's vision was to create a cozy yet sophisticated cocktail lounge with a "Big City" feel, prioritizing comfort alongside quality, intriguing cocktails, and an inclusive atmosphere. Our visit did not disappoint. Our first drinks were well-balanced and innovative: the "Heart of Stone," featuring flavors of bright Oaxacan mole with La Higuera Sotol, Milagro Reposado Tequila, Suntory Toki Japanese Whisky, blood orange, rasilla chile, East India Sherry, Highball blended amaro, and bitters, stirred and served in a mini coupe; and the "Saturday Night Special," a warm and woody, smokey tea old fashioned made with Lapsang Souchong-infused Rittenhouse Bonded Rye Whiskey, Buffalo Trace Bourbon, Monkey Shoulder Scotch, herbal liqueur, and Palo Cortado Sherry, stirred and served short. There's a reason this bar is being recognized nationally. Highball is definitely on our list of top bars in the Phoenix area.

Yelp
I would give this cocktail spot 10stars if I could. Anytime friends are in town I bring them here and they are always impressed. The service is impeccable, the atmosphere is chic yet cozy, and the drinks are unique but well balanced. It's a little gem near downtown Phoenix that is a must!!

Emily S.

Yelp
Such a fun place to bring a date, someone's visiting Phoenix or a cute get together with a friend. Drinks are unique and the vibe is intimate.
google avatar

Josh G.

Yelp
I really enjoyed the drinks here. It is definitely on the pricier side, but I like the overall atmosphere and how it is still pretty chill inside, but doesn't feel too stuffy. Bartenders are nice and pretty attentive. I like that there are good parking options nearby too. I'd recommend this as a date spot/date night for drinks.
google avatar

Elizabeth H.

Yelp
The drinks here are unique, well balanced, and delicious. I loved the white lotus and the leave only footprints. I do wish they had more vegetarian food choices and a dessert or two. A friend ordered the pimento cheese dip, which I thought was good. Service was quick and nice. The atmosphere was cozy and intimate- great for date night.
google avatar

Jessica C.

Yelp
Cool spot, fabulous cocktails and they have a few snacks. The pimento cheese and potato chips, and popcorn were both super tasty and perfect with the cocktails. It's dark, it's cozy, it's home-y, it's a vibe. Great Friday night, and plenty of parking!
google avatar

Yelp
Highball is very lowkey, chill vibe, great drinks type of spot. This was my first time visiting a bar like this in AZ and I'm glad that I decided to finally check this place out. The drinks were, music good, service was great! Shout out to both Sams that served us. Just the overall environment was great. Drinks that were ordered: My Tai, Not Yours Racehorse Other drinks I don't remember All drinks were very good and not too alcohol forward. If you're looking for a spot to just chill, have drinks, have conversations or just listen to music. Highball is the spot to visit. Rating 10/10
google avatar

Jaquay R.

Yelp
What a chill mellow spot. Went out with my sister on a Friday and we ended up here. I love it and plan to make this my new hangout spot. The service was excellent. Both ladies named Sam were super friendly and helpful in serving us. The drinks a classy and sophisticated. I tried the The White Lotus and it was beautifully scented with the flower that was in it. The taste had to grow on me after a few sips so I ended up liking it. Can't wait to go back for more.

Yelp
We came in on a Saturday night around 7 without a reservation. We were able to grab two seats at the bar. So glad we did! The bartender was super friendly and helpful when it came or ordering drinks. He gave us great recommendations. We loved all the cocktails we tried: None Ya Beeswax, Flew the Coop, Cherry Bomb and a delicious mocktail he created for me. They have a small snack menu but we didn't try anything. The vibe is perfect. Tables are spread out. They have a nice lounge area. Noise level is just right. It's our new favorite spot.
google avatar

Alyssa P.

Yelp
The cocktails are amazing, and Highball has an intimate and cozy vibe. Very cool spot!

Yelp
TLDR: Best cocktail I've had in Phoenix (albeit the most expensive too) This place came HIGHLY recommended by one of my friends. Despite not having a reservation, and a fairly long wait line at 11pm, the staff got our party of 3 in within 30 minutes of our arrival. The dark lighting, lit candles, and chill music are - to say the least - a vibe. There are different types of seating available, with each offering its own charm (from leather couches, to small tables, to high tables, to the bar), but wherever you're sat feels both private and comfortable. As for their cocktails, their menu was recently updated! I opted for the White Lotus, and was not disappointed. I can't quite remember what the base was, but if I am not mistaken it had elderflower and a citrus. It was subtly sweet and refreshing -- and hardly tasted of alcohol (my favorite kind of drinks!) For folks who are driving (or otherwise abstaining from drinking), they do offer $10 non-alcoholic cocktails (I didn't try them, but many of them sounded good!) Overall, I was pleased by the service, the ambiance, and most importantly, the drinks!

Jennifer O.

Yelp
Highball is such a beautifully decorated little bar! A friend and I stopped in and really enjoyed the ambiance and the cocktails! They had a good selection of craft cocktails and we both enjoyed our picks. They were light and refreshing. I'd definitely recommend a visit.
google avatar

Amanda C.

Yelp
This is my most favorite cocktail bar of all time. Libby, Mitch, Casey, and Sydney are amazing! They're talented bartenders who make your experience memorable every time through personality, service, and incredible cocktails (on and off menu). This is the place I'd recommend for anyone looking for a very nice date night or get together with friends who enjoy drinking!

Yelp
Shots & Cocktails 10+++++++++ This cute small cocktail bar did not disappoint! The staff was super sweet & explained the cocktail menu perfectly! The shots were so tasty we had to try them all! The drinks were also refreshing.

Yelp
Our server was excellent and the ambience was perfect. Really enjoyed the cocktails and the price wasnt terrible for what prices of cocktails are. Went on a Thursday and it was quiet and enjoyable

Yelp
Hands down my fave and go to cocktail bar in the valley! Everything about it from the ambiance to the service and the drinks are just absolutely amazing. Been here several times and I keep coming back.

Yelp
Looking for a great cocktail topped with awesome service? Highball is your place to be!!! Rob the bartender made me feel so welcome, that I wanted to put my feet up on their comfy couch, read a book and sip on my cocktail lol. After a short conversation with Rob he was able to identify which cocktails from the menu were suited for my palate. He started me off with the avocado oil milk washed cocktail which was super refreshing and drinkable. He followed that up with a tasty gin cocktail. The menu is extensive but based on my experience today. You can't go wrong with anything. Choose your spirit and let your bartender be your guide.
google avatar

Chad T.

Yelp
Best bar staff in Phoenix. Drinks are unique and great tasting! And the ambience is great for a large group of people or just a few friends
google avatar

E Z.

Yelp
An enchanting speakeasy with spectacular drinks. The cozy charm adds to the experience, making it a hidden gem. The amazing drinks alone are worth the visit - a true delight for cocktail enthusiasts.
google avatar

David H.

Yelp
VERY creative cocktails... but I feel they fell short in the taste/enjoyment department. I came away feeling like there's a reason the classic cocktails are classics, if you know what I mean.
google avatar

Yelp
Fun night out with old and new friends! My friend made a reservation for a party of 9 at 8:45pm on a Saturday night. Reservations also require deposit of $15/person. We all arrived by 8:45pm, however, there was a wait. Not sure what the point of a reservation was, but sure, no problem! By 9:15pm, we did get seated and the hostess was apologetic and did get us all a round of shooters, so appreciated they acknowledged the fact they did not commit to the 8:45pm. Very interesting cocktail menu with lots of inventive drinks. I had the Hot SheetHotel ($16). Was a solid drink. The ambience of the place is nice and it was pretty busy and full on a Saturday night. Reminds me of a speakeasy except for the fact you can see the place very clearly as it sits on the second floor at a busy intersection. Also, it sits on top of a Pei Wei... Overall, a great night out. But not sure I would go thru the hassle again of reservations and deposits for a pricey, solid but not very memorable drink.
google avatar

Areen B.

Yelp
Very fun and lovely atmosphere for drinks. I got the pink your poison which is a gin inspired drink that tastes like a lovely pink starburst flavor. I loved this one! My friends had the shapeshifter and the white lotus and they enjoyed them! I'll definitely be back to try their other drinks.
google avatar

Mandy T.

Yelp
I came here Saturday night and luckily they fit us in without a reservation after a very short wait. We sat at a hightop table near the bar. This area was fine but the couch area looked really cool. Mitch was our server and bartender and was very friendly and helped me choose a drink. I loved my drink. I mean seriously it was so freaking good! It's called the Painted Sky. The first half was good and then the second half tastes like the sangria you get in Barcelona. I will be back for this drink. My friend ordered a French 75 which tasted too alcohol forward (gin) for me but she liked it. The South Six Shooter just tastes like an old fashioned. And the Hot sheet hotel was good, and not too spicy. It's a good place to come for 1-2 drinks to start off your night out.
google avatar

Valerie C.

Yelp
This cocktail bar is part of the squad that periodically changes their menu, with their newest update having been rolled out on January 5th. What a happy new year that resulted in :D The ambience of this place is intimate and dark with couches and other seating that makes you feel like you and your party are in your very own little candle-lit bubble. I'm not gonna lie, normally these types of places stress me out because they seem so vulnerable and I feel like I have to act a certain way, but I was okay for the most part. Our party was seated after being on the waitlist for 20-30 minutes, which was surprising because we assumed the wait would've been longer on the very popular First Friday night. Service was great! I ordered the White Lotus and loved it very much, definitely recommend if you're a fan of lychee and sweetness. I need to learn how to make this. It definitely makes me want to go back to order the same thing but also to see what other delicious drinks their menu has to offer (before it changes again.)
google avatar

Brian O.

Yelp
Loved it and was impressed from the time I walked in until I left. I actually took a date here as he arrived from Houston and was in the mood for some bourbon. I suggested us trying something new and be a bit adventurous. I had the shook up which was superior to any other drink I've had. The music was spot on and lighting was low but perfect for date conversation. My date loved his bourbon . The drinks were a little on the expensive side but we each only had two so it was perfect. Staff was gracious and attentive and as we left I was already planning our return. This is my new favorite haunt.
google avatar

Janelle N.

Yelp
Absolutely love this speakeasy! The outside gives nothing away of what is within, Highball is above the PeiWei. Drab, not impressive from the outside gives way completely once you open the door and go up the candle lined steps. Dark intimate atmosphere with chandeliers, leather tufted sofas and club chairs, exposed brick walls and tasteful decor with black velvet curtains and sultry vibe music set the scene. The music selection was especially nice and further creates a sexy atmosphere. Drinks were good and I throughly enjoyed my time at highball. I went with a small group and I would recommend this speakeasy for a couple or very small group of close friends. It feels very cozy and intimate, I especially appreciated that the room temperature was decidedly warm and I even turn off my tuxedo lapel blazer which I rarely due to typically feeling cold when I go to bars. The warm temperatures if great for females and I noticed that all the girls who wore jackets there promptly took them off once they were seated. This further creates the sexy feel as then you could see all the female dresses and outfits well. Currently this is my favorite speakeasy and I cannot wait to go again!!

Yelp
Such a cute little bar in Phoenix. Loved the whole vibe of the place, from the staff, to the layout, the lighting and the music. We were there for almost 3 hours and had no idea- it was so relaxing! We loved the drinks, especially the one that smelled like Jasmine :). We also had the little shrimp roll which was very good.
google avatar

Adriana C.

Yelp
Such a cute cocktail bar! I love the ambience and the vibes. Music is good, service was great and drinks were delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
This place is awesome!! Such a beautiful ambiance and the drinks were fantastic!!! The service was so great too, our waitress was very good about refilling our water and keeping us caught up on drinks! I would recommend, we are definitely coming back!
google avatar

Sandy T.

Yelp
Such a dope lil' place. It's an upstairs spot and is intimate, cute/classy. Definitely recommend having a reservation when going to any of the cocktail bars in PHX area if possible. They have a couch area that's a bit more cushy, but we sat table top for a party of 5. Shot--Green Tea is soooo good! Poured into a dainty cup and would be great for those who aren't accustomed to drinking tbh. Good place for a chill, low key kick back.
google avatar

Rachel C.

Yelp
Absolutely fantastic bar. We were able to out the bar an hour before they opened to take our engagement pictures. The communication with Libby about scheduling, was amazing. They were so inviting and supportive of us taking our pictures there. When we arrived the service was top notch, our drinks were exquisite, and it was the perfect setting for our photo shoot. The staff was conversational, welcoming, helpful and so kind. So special that we have a memory there now! Will definitely be back!

Yelp
We've been told to check out Highball for some time and finally made it in ... Loved it so much its definitely being added to the date night rotation - the space is elegant and inviting, very comfortable (best bar stools in town!) - they have a unique Cocktail menu and we enjoyed several new takes on classics as well as original creations - the service was excellent with knowledgeable bartenders who helped pick cocktails to suit our taste -
google avatar

Avani T.

Yelp
Kind of hidden away, the Highball is easy to miss if you are walking by the building. There are definitely signs for it but since it is housed on the second floor, there aren't windows at the ground level to notice that there is a place there or get a sense of the ambiance and popularity. When you open the door, you are presented with stairs that are lit with small candles on the sides. It's dim but you can still see. Pretty romantic, I would say. When you get to the second floor, you notice couches, chairs and tables, high chair seating and a bar. The bartenders are attentive and friendly. The menu for all the drinks is pretty outstanding. The drinks are very creative and not typical ones you'd find at other places. I got the Love in León which I enjoyed immensely. Nothing like I had ever tried before. They also have a snack menu and if you are vegetarian like me, the only thing on there that you'll be able to eat is the pimento cheese dish. It comes with housemade chips. I didn't try that but I considered it. Check this place out for a night alone or one with friends. Bringing a date would be a fantastic experience, too. I really appreciated the vibe of the place and the lighting, or lack of lighting, rather. Oh, and you must know, it isn't cheap. The drink I got was 17 dollars (pretty crazy) but if you have that kind of money to spend, this is the place for you.
