Local coffee shop right next to LSU. It is big and spacious with lots of small tables. I like the inside decor. Some people bring their dogs in and around the shop! There's only street parking by the shop. I got a large french vanilla latte and it was good with a caffeine booster! The girl working the register was super kind and helpful!

I love this place. So cozy 😊 Toasted everything bagel: heaven. Hot chocolate: no good. No flavor, it's surprising.. Other stuff: guess it depends! The blondie was also good/super rich

The service was really great! The coffee too was amazing and the staff is clean, nice, and patient! Peeked in their brewing room because I’m nosy lol. And its clean, the dining room, outside, and food area is always clean. Highland will always get my business!

While I didn't attend LSU, I tend to have business in the area, i.e. Tigertown and vicinity when I am home and try to stop in. I first went here in the early 90s when home from college break and glad to see it still running strong, even in the face of corporate chains that have saturated the coffee market over the last few decades, especially in Baton Rouge. It would be great if they had a shop in the community such as Jefferson hwy, Perkins Rd, Essen Ln, mid City etc. But on the other hand, it's still great to stop in the Tigertown location.

Spacious, with plenty of seating. Limited food offerings. Solid coffee. Right outside the LSU campus, so plenty of people were there studying and chatting.

Google
Great hangout spot near the campus. The coffee is great and the atmosphere is laid back. The decors are pretty nice too! They have a discounted refill offer for the coffee ordered while dinner in. The options for baked goods are plenty.

Great place to hang out when it’s not too crowded. Plenty of students hang out here studying. Desserts are made by shop and are very good. Coffee is good also.

Google
An amazing place: great coffee, friendly staff, quite (perfect to study and work while enjoying coffee), comfortable room temperature (vs freezing at most other places), clean, a lot of seating places indoors and outdoors in a small banana trees garden. They are very artistic, add picture to every cup. Great choice of teas as well. And it is very popular.

Yelp
Highland Coffees always delivers. We had a small birthday gathering last Saturday and they were very accommodating. And of course, the coffee is wonderful!

Yelp
My book club met here some nights ago & it's a quaint but lively locally owned coffee shop. There's the amazing smell of ground coffee & sweet homemade pastries. Apparently this place has been around since 1989, right in the edge of LSU campus! There were many students, study groups & other patrons enjoying weather in the outdoor courtyard. Our group sat inside & I ordered a vanilla iced coffee with a slice of rum nut cake. It was warmed, although the cashier offered a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream with it, I declined. When I say it was rich in flavor, you definitely will want more with a coffee or tea. Our book club voted to return, so I can't wait to try more. It was a refreshing experience.

Yelp
Nice staff but nothing special. Didn't even drink the cappuccino. Was not frothed right and forgot to add the vanilla. Nice courtyard for a mediocre coffee but I need more care and taste. I'll throw in an extra star since they have the desire to make it right. One more chance :)

Yelp
The service here was super friendly! This was my first time going to this coffee house and I was genuinely surprised! They had so many options for the iced teas from the usual places that I go to so I had no idea what to choose so the staff helped me choose one! I ended up going with the Yerba mate tea which is very good. It's not too strong in terms of taste which I enjoy. The atmosphere is very nice but it is a bit loud if you are trying to study in my opinion. But it is a great place to go if you are catching up with friends or doing light work. They have so many options in terms of drips and other drinks that I am excited to try next time I come! I also really love their outside seating, if it was wasn't so hot I would definitely sit out there! They had many chargers among the walls too which is a good plus.

Yelp
This establishment is frequently busy, and that's not just because it is within walking distance of LSU. The coffee is always excellent and the staff friendly. I've been coming here for over thirty years and I have never been disappointed.

Ava R.

Yelp
vibes in here are 12/10. coffee quality is insane and there are SO many roast options. There's even all the teas you could imagine and baked goods that are home made. everything from tea to black coffee to a frozen caramel coffee is so freaking good if you like sweet coffee. This coffee has depth and the employees are always kind.

Yelp
If you want a local coffee shop, you've found it here at Highland Coffees. Recent orders that I've had are lavender matcha latte, blended matcha, chai tea latte, and dirty vanilla chai tea latte (which means espresso was added). They've all tasted pretty good. They have a lot of different syrup flavors to customize your drinks. And they have pastries and bagels. The staff is very friendly and kind. The shop has a very chill vibe. Lots of locals, regulars, and students come here to chill, study, or chat. There's a lot of indoor and outdoor seating. The shop has a retail area to buy coffee, teas, mugs, and more. This will be a 4 start review instead of 5 because sometimes the service can be a bit slow. And some drinks are made in an area that is hidden from customers. Most coffee shops I've been to are typically completely transparent when making beverages. The shop could use a physical update and more modern look. Full transparency, the first time I went I did not like the iced almond latte or the pastry I ordered. It took me over a year to return but I've been back a few times and enjoyed it.

Yelp
Highland Coffees has long served the LSU and Baton Rouge community from its location on Chimes Street at the North Gates of LSU. It is a local establishment that has everything one could want from a college coffee shop. There is plenty of room to work or rest while enjoying your beverages or snacks. There are easy chairs or tables, whichever suits your needs. There is also an outdoor seating area with a nicely planted arbor to enjoy if the weather permits. Also outdoors are plenty of places to park your bike. The facility possesses a nice wheelchair ramp for the mobility impaired. Highland Coffees roasts beans in-house, and therefore serves a variety of interesting blends on a rotating basis. Espresso drinks are also available, as are an impressive list of teas. Teas are also available iced, as are coffee beverages, for those times you want a cold drink. Lots of baked goods are also on offer, for when you you need some food. Coffee and related merchandise is also available for retail purchase if you want to enjoy a locally roasted variety at home. Service is always fast, as they are used to high volume. However, I think Highland Coffees is best enjoyed in a leisurely manner, kick back and take your time. Have a nice experience at this local gem.

Yelp
I Love this Highland Coffee. Baristas are very kind and the coffee is great! Been a staple around LSU

Yelp
Coffee was good, cafe was great with plenty of sitting. Definitely will use this place for business and personal occasion.

Yelp
This place is so cute and awesome!! They had a little bit of everything on the menu, super yummy pastries, and super comfy inside and outside seating. The environment was great especially with how nice the staff is.

I work at insomnia. I'm literally always in there atmosphere is nice workers are fantastic

Yelp
This place was so much bigger and nicer than I expected! It's a great place to study or chat with friends. I LOVE cold brew or iced coffee--I rarely drink coffee that I don't enjoy. The barista recommended the vietnamese blend for the cold brew, and honestly, it was so unbelievably bitter. I would try to colombian or the trader's blend over the vietnamese blend. It made me feel sick, even though I drink coffee every single day. Overall, it was still a good experience, but I didn't love the coffee that was recommended.

Yelp
Great atmosphere for studying or working on a book. I come here often for a writing group that I am a part of. It has a classic coffee shop vibe. Fair warning, it can get really packed in here since it is next to a major University. There is also WiFi available. I can't speak to the coffee since I don't drink it (a writer who doesn't drink coffee?!) but the desserts are usually pretty good. I usually get the lemon cake or a muffin.

Yelp
Highland coffee is a great coffee and study location right next to campus. It has a lot of tables and outlets that really allow you to get your study on. My most favorite part of this place is definitely the style of the coffee shop. It has a lot of space for people to come and study. It has a lot of nice art that changes pretty often. There's a lot of outlets and even some that go outside. This place really is the best place to go to study. However, this leads to the overpopulation of studious people inside the shop and a lack of space for everyone to come and study. The service here is really good. I think it is run by a bunch of college students, and they do a really good job in getting you what you want and then serving you really well. My favorite is definitely the Iced Chai. I get that every single time I go here. You can add some white chocolate syrup to it which changes the game dramatically. There's a pretty good flavor to it, but you have to mix it well and add in a good amount of syrup. I spent the majority of my senior year here to get stuff done. It has always served me well until 11 pm when they closed which isn't a problem. I would definitely come back here again when I need to study.

Yelp
Oh My Gosh!! Sweetest girls working on Sunday 12/26/21. So bubbly and out going. I don't think they've ever mer a stranger. Made us feel like family in 20 seconds. They loved my service dog and spoiled him rotten. Keep up the good work!! Today's staff 12/27/21 just as nice and attentive but they had a line to work through

Yelp
All is very good having a 6 shot Americano and honey and some great cheesecake. Nice setting and plenty of seating here for very busy game day crowds around area. Sure good find here and lovely lass has prepared for me.

Yelp
great coffee, customer service and atmosphere! Not too far from my dorm which is great. Usually get an iced mocha with oat milk, very consistent with taste and is amazing.
google avatar

Rodney H.

Yelp
Absolutely hands down the best caffeine-free cappuccino I have had in Baton Rouge, and I have test all the coolest coffee shops to come to this conclusion. The blend is bold, and lends itself beautifully to a shot of vanilla or not, and frothy oat milk. #delicious #itsallaboutthecoffee

Yelp
Pretty solid place. It's just off campus, its convenient for parking and seating, and the coffee is nice. I wouldn't say it is the highest quality coffee you can get in the area, but students are very lucky to have such a nice, cozy, good place like Highland Coffees to relax and study. For those who are wondering, it is more 2nd wave coffee than anything.
google avatar

Kailyn G.

Yelp
I love this coffee shop! The vibe is so nice, and it is very spacious! The outside area is my favorite, even in the rain it is very peaceful. The coffee is soooo good, I get a medium roast vanilla iced latte with caramel drizzle and a lemon blueberry bread. So good, and definitely will continue to come back! The workers behind the counter are super nice as well.
google avatar

Rita V.

Yelp
Wow! What a cup of coffee! An Ethiopian medium roast. Served by the happiest and most attentive tigers from LSU. I'm on the fence with th croissant, the overcooked very crunchy croissant... because despite its appearance - not looking like a beautiful little croissant from a French pastry bakery - it was not skimping on butter but the crunch was actually delightful and the quality chocolate croissant is pretty good! A stone throw for my son's dorm. I will cut them some slack. Fluffy croissants are the result of VERY COLD kitchens. Not something you will find in warmer and humid Baton Rouge. So it was more like a bar of buttery toasted chocolate-filled, pastry stick. The coffee? OH THE COFFEE!!!
google avatar

Anna F.

Yelp
This is my place!!! I always love it here. Plenty of plugs for remote work and good wifi. The coffee is good and they have lots of coffee and tea options. Their bakery items are always always delicious!!!! I recommend anything out of the case. Support local businesses.

Swaggy A.

Yelp
Good coffee and tea. Definitely overpriced but cute environment and vibe. Also the baristas do take 10 minutes to make your drink.
google avatar

Nona P.

Yelp
One of my favorite local coffee shops in Baton Rouge I can't say enough good things about this place! The atmosphere is so cute, perfect to sit in their courtyard for a coffee date or sitting inside to finish some last minute homework assignments. They have free wifi so I often come here to study or do homework since it's within walking distance to my university. The workers are also nice and welcoming! I'm a very indecisive person so picking a drink from a menu with a thousand options is complicated for me The barista was so patient with me and helped me find my perfect coffee drink!!! I literally crave it every single day so I just had to share it with you guys!

Yelp
This place is a staple for students at LSU who want to support local coffee shops. It is fairly busy most of the time because students usually pack the place. It can get rather loud, so it is not really ideal for getting coffee to catch up with friends unless you go outside. It is good for studying if you like to study around other people. There are a lot of table, and it gets packed during the semester. If you get distracted easy, this is not the place to try to get work done. The beans are roasted in house, and you will likely smell like coffee when you leave if you spent a good period of time there. My go to coffee there is caramel latte or drip. They have a good variety of options.
google avatar

Layni L.

Yelp
I have very fond memories at Highland due to its proximity to LSU's campus, but their coffee is honestly never good without a large amount of sweetener, and even then, the espresso tastes exactly like black, brewed-at-home coffee to me. They do have delightful pastries and snacks for purchase, but the environment is dull inside and very... musty green. They also have a nice tea selection, which is nice in the cooler months. Their saving grace is a beautiful patio when the weather is nice, but when I have gone there are often smokers and it makes it pretty unpleasant. I'd recommend a lot of other coffee shops in BR before this one.
google avatar

Yelp
The best coffee shop in Red Stick! Their Coffees of the Day always surprise and delight me--today's is La Minita Costa Rican (I'm looking at the artful chalk menu as I write this review)--and the baristas are always friendly and helpful. Here too is a place to visit if you're in the mood for long, interesting conversations in a warm and relaxing atmosphere. We met a couple folks here the other day, just by coincidence, and talked for three hours about 1970s Louisiana festivals, poetry, and art, meanwhile feeling no rush at all from staff or other patrons. Definitely a selling point. Classical and jazz often plays softly over the speakers, not so loudly as to be intrusive, adding to the welcoming vibe. Highland also hosts weekly events like poetry readings, which is a plus, and has nice leather armchairs as well as tables from which to enjoy them. A courtyard right outside is secluded from the road by live oaks, perfect for nighttime hangouts under tasteful lighting. For sure a coffee place worth a try! We highly recommend it.

Yelp
Clarke, the owner, is a great guy. He stocks quality beans for those who want to grind and brew their own, quality ground coffees for those who just want to brew their own, and great coffees for those who just want to drink coffee. It also has quality teas and good things to snack on. The coffee shop is comfortable, full of good people, and I have noticed that a couple of people who used to hang there and be irritating are no longer around. Highland Coffees is pretty much everything a coffee shop should be. I drink coffee over town but this is by far my favorite coffee shop.

Delsey B.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite cafes around. The atmosphere is really calm and chill, the staff is really friendly, and the coffee is both really good and decent price. My club loves to host meetings here because of how nice the cafe is. My favorite is the latte and the dirty mocha, and I always stop by once a week to get my fix. and just close enough to campus to retreat to without truly leaving campus. I plan on coming here for as long as I can!
google avatar

Raven J.

Yelp
The coffee beans here grant you the ability to see into the future. The muffins are also really good.
google avatar

Jonathan C.

Yelp
I stopped in here while seeing a show around the corner at the Varsity theater to get a quick caffeine fix. This appears to be a college indie coffee shop. It looks to be converted from some other space as there is sort of an expansive layout with multilevel ceilings, but that is sort of the charm of an indie shop. I got berry iced tea which was delicious and my brother got an French vanilla iced coffee which he seemed to enjoy. The crowd was mostly students studying at least on a Thursday night, so there is a real college vibe. I would go back if I were in the area.

Pam B.

Yelp
Best coffee (granita!!). Best people. Best atmosphere. This is really a Baton Rouge landmark right next to LSU campus. Lots of regulars who've been going there 20+ years religiously and lots of young people and families too. Highland is a place for everyone. Made many memories there in college and graduate school and I will continue to frequent when in town!!
google avatar

Melissa G.

Yelp
My coffee was delish and the attendant was courteous and knowledgeable. The restaurant tables were quite crowded & not very comfortable which made our table conversation a little difficult. I'm thinking that most people go there to study? So if you are meeting someone there for conversation, go super early to grab a less crowded spot.
google avatar

Jando S.

Yelp
Even as a non-java head, I can attest to the powers that be at Highland Coffees. It doesn't look or feel like a destination spot for coffee, but the stuff they're cranking out here deserves recognition for not only keeping LSU students caffeinated, but the rest of the city of Baton Rouge. Located just a stone's throw away from campus, it goes without saying this is a student's sanctuary for everything from studying to socializing. There is ample room, tables, and space for a little loungin' and sippin'. Cheers for featuring an outdoor space, free Wi-Fi, and even their own mobile app (whoa!). The selection of coffees and teas are second to none. Shoot for a cafe au lait, granita, or even their killer chai tea. There is an aroma of freshly roasted beans in the morning and sacks of it laying in piles all throughout the place. The buzz (#1) of student workers manning the counter is brimming with smiles and good attitudes. They also feature a pretty stellar selection of baked goods, ranging from pastries to desserts to wet the appetite of all patrons. Though bagels, muffins, cookies tend to run out sooner than later, I am more of a fan of their biscottis and cheesecakes. An added bonus for carrying vanilla bean from NOLA for those hot summer days. _______ (#1) Pun intended.
google avatar

Joseph S.

Yelp
Their coffees are the best I've ever had, especially the flavored coffee. I think they may even roast their own coffee. Great place to come and do computer work. My only complaints are that the line can get out of control as sometimes they are understaffed for the amount of customers and a lot of their bakery items are subpar. All in all it is still the best coffee shop in Baton Rouge by a long shot and the best coffee shop for studying

Scott B.

Yelp
I had the espresso over ice cream. The dark espresso quality was great and delicious! The place has a nice laidback vibe too and outdoor seating is a plus when it's not summer.
google avatar

C N.

Yelp
We came in from out of town and wanted to see what they had to offer. They offered more than just coffee. We came and got some great ice cream. The ice cream was delicious. We also left with more than just ice cream, with some chocolate covered coffee beans.

Payton J.

Yelp
10/10 staff, 10/10 vibes, 10/10 coffee. i love to come in-between classes. not pricey either
google avatar

Parker B.

Yelp
As I was making the drive from New Orleans back to Dallas I had an urge for coffee and stopped at this highly regarded coffee shop. From the moment you walk in, it is clear that this is a regular spot for college students to hang out and get some schoolwork done. I ordered a 20 oz cappuccino to go and looking back on it, I wish I would have ordered one of the delicious looking pastries they had. Besides the point, the coffee was the average price you would expect to pay for a coffee I think it was around $5. Hearing all this craze about the coffee this shop had, I fully expected to be blown away by this cup. I sadly wasn't, not saying the coffee wasn't bad, it just tasted like your typical cup of coffee you would get at any coffee shop. Overall, if you are ever in the Baton Rouge area and are craving a cup of coffee at a fair price I would definetly reccomend going here.
google avatar

Kalie G.

Yelp
this place is always super crowded. the coffee is good but sometimes they make things too fast and they don't taste quite right.

Catherine M.

Yelp
Great atmosphere. Great coffee I order there quite a lot, and the workers are always friendly and helpful.
google avatar

Kelsey P.

Yelp
This place has great coffee and a great atmosphere to sit down and study for hours on end...that is if you're lucky and the WiFi decides to work for you. This coffee shop has the worst WiFi I have ever come across. The problem isn't that it's slow or anything. The problem is actually being able to connect to it in . And it doesn't matter if you're a regular like me and automatically connect to the WiFi when your computer is in the vicinity of the building. Imagine sitting down with your iced coffee in hand, ready to get to work and then realizing that today the internet router at Highland has decided to once again confuse your computer's IP address with someone else's in the coffee shop, completely not allowing you to connect to the WiFi whatsoever. This has happened to me multiple times and I just have to leave because I can't use my computer without WiFi of course. It's beyond frustrating after I walk all the way there and have to walk all the way back to my dorm just to connect to WiFi that works.
google avatar

Kenneth R.

Yelp
They have a Probat roaster, and they know how to use it! Their system for ordering is like that of the Intelligentsia coffeebars: the person who takes your order is the same person who makes your drink and then rings up your purchase when it's ready. I ordered a macchiato and was totally pleased with the result. The barista asked me to choose between a medium and a dark roast, so of course I chose the medium. I think I got Kenyan AA. I went back for a second visit, this time getting my macchiato to go. The result this time was much less successful than on my first visit -- the coffee tasted rather bitter. As one of my friends likes to say, when you make espresso, every shot is a chemistry experiment. Sometimes things work out and sometimes they don't. I'd like to think that a really good barista would have detected the bad shot by sight and started over again. We can always dream, can't we? Highland Coffees is spacious and inviting; the ambiance is mellow. This is a real find -- don't miss it.
google avatar

Karen D.

Yelp
Ambiance is nice here; seems to be a good study spot for the college students. Service was great. Ordered the passionfruit iced tea, which I enjoyed. They let my friend and me sniff most of their tea leaves. Prices are reasonable too!
google avatar

Meagan C.

Yelp
Highland Coffees is a pretty standard college coffee shop. They stand out from a standard coffee shop because their offerings are diverse. You can have almost any style of coffee and/or tea with them. Their pastries are delicious. But Highland Coffees is more than that. It's the atmosphere they project of a calm, quiet place to work and study, or take a break from the stress of life and relax. They've really captured the essence of "the third place"; that other place that isn't work or home, but somewhere you choose to be because it's safe and welcoming. Unfortunately, this contributes to the difficulty of finding seating here. I typically have to take my coffee to go. But that hasn't stopped me from coming back for more.
google avatar

Eric O.

Yelp
Friendly staff, quaint vibe, and good coffee. Plenty of seating and even some tables outside. There was nothing about it the blew my socks off, but I enjoyed my experience and I'll definitely be going back.
google avatar

Anany A.

Yelp
Highland Coffees is a quintessential Baton Rouge institution! It is my most favorite coffee shop ever. I spent my student years there, studying or hanging out. I could not start my day without a bagel and a coffee from Highland. I have so many great memories from there. The coffees and teas are always fresh and taste great! I moved to New York in 2011 and I did some extensive research to find a coffee or tea shop that could live up to my expectations but I could not find anything even close. Therefore, I have been ordering online from Highland Coffees ever since.
