Meet 10 Of LA’s Best Asian-Owned Cafes - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"15 years ago, Korean-American owner Frank Kim was training to be a firefighter when he first tried coffee. It quickly became a hobby as he began to search for different kinds, eventually leading him to become a manager at Demitasse. Long story short, firefighting didn’t work out and Kim became interested in not only the coffee part of the business, but also the hospitality aspect: creating a space that brings people together and a product that he’s proud to serve. He grew up helping his immigrant parents with their retail business, which made him initially rebel against that kind of work, but the influence ultimately came back around with Highlight. The first location opened in Glendale in 2015 in the corner of a historic 1920s hotel, and in late 2019, he launched a second location in Pasadena. Over the course of the past year, Kim felt like he was going from being an expert at running coffee shops to feeling like it’s all new again. And while the regulars have helped him stay open, he said it’s hard to imagine things bouncing back to the way they were before, but he’s optimistic that his customers will continue to support Highlight both as a business and a welcoming community space. Order this: Either a butterscotch latte or an orange-vanilla latte, both of which use homemade syrups." - with warm welcome, leslie yeh

Google
For where thou art, there is the world itself, with every several pleasure in the world including a good coffee. Without further ado, let us begin this new review. Highlight Coffee (est 2015) is a tiny corner coffee shop nestled in central Glendale. Owned and operated by Mr. Frank Kim. He has another shop in Pasadena. This coffee shop location is at an historic hotel building across the Civic center on Broadway. Cafe’s indoor atmosphere was quite relaxing with a few seats and long wooden bar tables; good background music. They sell some pastries and donuts as well as coffee bags and merch. Menu items were modest and has the basic and specialty drinks. I arrived on a hot midafternoon and was genuinely greeted with warmth by a male barista with cool tattoos. I ordered a Cold Brew (16oz) x milk. It was very smooth, aromatic and refreshing. And barista gave a Spinach Cheese Croissant ostensibly as giveaway since they’re closing soon. I acquiesce on his kindness. Staff was nice and competent. Prices were quite affordable and highly competitive. Quality was awesome. Street metered parking only. Overall, I enjoyed my cold coffee drink and service. I highly recommend this nice coffee shop.

Google
Been coming to this place for years and the butterscotch latte never misses. It tastes soo creamy and just the perfect sweet treat. Get it with oat milk and a little extra sweetness. My favorite local little cafe.

Google
Highlight Coffee is not Starbucks. The way they roast their beans makes the coffee taste richer and bolder. Their baked food looks like stuff from a bakery, not a factory. The people who work their are more like restaurant staff, not baristas.🙄 The atmosphere is fantastic. I uploaded some photos. The building was a hotel built in 1937, sobthe architecturevis fabulous. The windows, the entrance door, and the interior is very inviting. The latte and croissant that I got were uniquely more delicious than anything I have ever gotten at Starbucks.

Google
I had the most delectable strawberry almond croissant with my oat milk cappuccino. It was fresh and the taste was what you'd expect from a European café (highest compliment affordable). Service is exemplary. Much better than going to a large faceless chain like Starbucks.

Google
I recently checked out Highlight Coffee and had a great experience. The raspberry pistachio Danish was amazing, a combo I'd never tried before, and it only cost $5. Their espresso was smooth and made from really good beans. They have some cool flavors like butterscotch and orange vanilla, but they don’t go overboard with sweet stuff. The place has limited seating, making it a nice spot for a date or a business meeting, and it’s also a good environment for studying or work. The staff was super helpful and answered all my questions. They have a bunch of other fancy pastries like Miso Butterscotch Cookie, triple threat chocolate chunk cookie, pain au chocolat, white miso kouign-amann, banana bread, and coffee cake donut. They also have savory options like spinach and cheese croissant and kimchi spam musubi croissant. I can’t wait to try more of their pastries next time.

Google
I've been coming here regularly for over 5 years, so it's about time I write a review about my favorite coffee spot! Highlight manages to brew some of the most exquisite coffee in the LA area. Whether you're a black coffee lover or a latte enthusiast, there's something for you here. They make their syrups in-house, and it shows! Not only is the coffee incredible, but the baristas are extremely kind and welcoming too. I always feel like I'm able to reset and relax when I walk through the doors. Don't skip Highlight if you're looking for coffee in Glendale :)

Josh D.

Google
Really great coffee! They have a diverse menu of options available, with a butterscotch short cappuccino being what I chose. They have a few unique options, like a coffee Arnold Palmer and the option to get a Fredo Cap or Latte. Full selection of pastries, and great seating inside with a ton of natural light. It’s a beautiful spot to sit and work for a few. I’d recommend it!

Google
Highlight Coffee in Glendale is a hidden gem for coffee enthusiasts. The moment you step inside, you're greeted by the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee and warm, inviting atmosphere. The baristas are knowledgeable and passionate, offering an impressive selection of single-origin that are expertly brewed to highlight their unique flavors. I particularly loved their pour-over options, which allowed me to savor the intricate tasting notes of the beans. The cozy seating arrangements make it a perfect for both relaxing with a book or catching up with friends. Don't miss their baked goods either; the muffins are delightfully moist and pair perfectly with a cup of coffee. Whether you're a local or just passing through, Highlight Coffee is a must-visit destination for anyone looking to enjoy excellent coffee and a welcoming environment. It's a place where every sip feels like a little celebration of flavor!

Yelp
You have to try the butterscotch latte--seriously, it's a standout. Chill vibes, no-frills service (they won't serenade you, but they will caffeinate you), and coffee that's dangerously good. Lots of easy side-street parking too, which is a win. Great little spot to relax or get some work done
google avatar

Yelp
This place is a hidden gem in Glendale. Love the ambience the Orange vanilla latte is perhaps the best vanilla latte I've ever had. And they always have a lot of different pastries in the morning but they sell fast, so get here early if you like pastries with coffee! Very quick service too, so I don't have to wait a long time. Love it. A Must try coffee shop here in Glendale.
google avatar

Yelp
Stopped by Highlight Coffee for a large drip coffee, only $4.75, and worth every penny. The coffee is gourmet, smooth, and clearly made with care, far better than Starbucks or any other spot around. The ambiance is great, the service is friendly, and the prices are solid. If you're looking for a quality cup of coffee in town, this is the place to go.
google avatar

Daniyar S.

Yelp
Refined atmosphere, exceptional espresso, and delightful baristas. Highlight Coffee offers a perfect harmony of taste and hospitality. A gem in the heart of Glendale.

Yelp
Came here twice, ordered a matcha, both times the matcha was very underwhelming. Milk to matcha ratio is off making the drink taste like mostly milk with a hint of matcha. Also why are they putting solid honey in an iced drink when it just clumps at the bottom, instead of pre melting it the first time?!? Pastries are good, service is good. Vibes are good otherwise.
google avatar

Yelp
I wanted to try this place out since it's near my girlfriend's area but I ended up with mixed feelings. The drinks weren't great even with added sugar; it was bitter and just wasn't hitting for me. Their pastries are fantastic though, I loved their miso and ham & cheese croissants; they were crispy, fluffy, and sweet. I'm not sure if I came on a day where the barista handling the register was in a bad mood but he gave me attitude on simple questions I had and it threw me off. Ambiance was just ok as it's small inside with barely any seating.
google avatar

Ashlyn R.

Yelp
The pastries here are TO DIE FOR! I ordered the white miso kouign amann and loved how flakey it and sweet it was. I also ordered the ham and cheese croissant and found it to be super light and savory! The butterscotch latte is also fantastic and not overly sweet. I can't wait to visit again soon!
google avatar

Alyssa C.

Yelp
Iced orange vanilla latte from Highlight is a delight! I mainly tasted the subtle zest from the orange flavor and the espresso was on the lighter side. It's right on the corner of Broadway and Glendale. and the lighting inside is lovely. Barista was chill and quick with it. They're also known for their butterscotch latte!
google avatar

Lilly X.

Yelp
Great coffee and very well-lit with the large windows. Minimal seating as this is a small coffee shop and street parking is probably your best bet. Friendly baristas and pleasant space to drop in for an excellent cup of coffee.
google avatar

Yelp
Came to get a matcha Americano this AM. Cute little place on the corner of Glendale and Broadway, $4.50 for my drink which is totally reasonable. The service was quick and friendly, all the pastries in the box looked amazing so I will definitely try one next time. My only note here was that there's too much ice in my drink. About 20 giant pieces of it. Which is usually fine given I didn't ask for light ice, which I should have and will next time. the ice quickly tasted like refrigerator water once it melted in with the matcha completely altering the taste of the drink. I came here because another review said they use a certain ceremonial matcha brand. I'll definitely be back to support this shop, but will make sure to get light or no ice.
google avatar

Sofia E.

Yelp
Cute shop on the corner of two fairly busy streets. Got the Iced Mocha with whole milk. Good to note you can add oat milk at no extra charge, which I don't see very often but is becoming more common. Mocha flavor wasn't very strong, but I liked that it had an actual chocolate flavor to it, as opposed to the typical overly sweet syrupy taste. The one size option here was $6 which is fairly average for around LA and the size is decent, looking like a Starbucks grande ~ 16floz.
google avatar

Vendy _.

Yelp
The butterscotch latte is amazing! Perfectly sweet with a slightly salty foam On Saturday at 4 p.m., there were no pastries. The interior is outdated, but the drinks are tasty.
google avatar

Gohar K.

Yelp
I can't tell you how many times I have passed by this place but never stopped by until yesterday. I always thought there is no parking available and where am I going to park. I finally realized there is parking in the back of the building. So I parked and walked in. There were a few people in line it was morning rush I believe. I ordered a cold brew and a butter croissant. The coffee tasted amazing so did the croissant. I found a seat and took a few minute break and enjoyed my croissant and coffee while looking around the shop. I didn't like seeing the kitchen all open with so many visible items such as a sink pots and pans etc It's not pleasant. Customer service was good.
google avatar

Tigran K.

Yelp
The coffee that I had here was of good quality but as a first time customer the vibes here just threw me off. The staff did not make me feel welcome at all.

Harutyun H.

Yelp
The worst coffee and worst service in my life The waitress was so rude and the coffee was so bad that me and my wife couldnt drink it

Mia R.

Yelp
EXCELLENT coffee here vibes are great foam is crazy the vanilla latte is not too sweet which is always my big complaint at other shops. just feel really lucky to have a local shop that is doing great coffee here
google avatar

Lauren C.

Yelp
I drink coffee on a pretty regular basis and when I say that this was the highlight of all the coffees I've had in the past month or so, it's not an exaggeration! It's very memorable and I will probably think about the Butterscotch Latte for days. Service was phenomenal. Friendly and fast service. Parking was easy (at least on a Sunday). Inside is cute and cozy. Would definitely recommend!
google avatar

Ellen N.

Yelp
Stopped by for a quick breakfast before work. I got the iced freddo cappuccino and a ham and cheese croissant. Despite the wonderful reviews, I was a bit disappointed. The cappuccino came in a 16 oz cup but only filled up about 12 oz. The coffee was good, but wished it was mentioned. The ham and cheese proportion to the bread was little so tasted a bit bland and not as fresh. It's a small cafe so seating is limited. Friendly service. Street parking only.
google avatar

Luke L.

Yelp
This is currently one of the two Highlight Coffee locations (another one in Pasadena) and this is the original location. The coffee shop is located on the corner of the intersection of E Broadway & S Glendale Ave. [Parking]: Street parking only and I found an available metered parking across the street ($0.25 for 10 minutes.) [Atmosphere]: No outdoor patio seating with fairly small interior spacing. [Menu]: Simple espresso bar menu - no extra charge on organic milk, almond milk, and oat milk. Customers can even order a half-gallon jug (64 oz) of cold brew, coffee lemonade, latte, orange vanilla, mocha, chai, and matcha. *** Latte (hot, $5.25): It was one of the most acidic-tasting lattes I have ever had and honestly it wasn't all that bad. It is all up to personal preference and the drink certainly tasted pretty strong with strong aroma too. The drink was memorable enough, but the flavor profile wasn't exactly my cup of tea. *** Definitely one of the most interesting lattes I have had in a long time. If you like acidic latte, then this is certainly the place to check out.
google avatar

Moni S.

Yelp
Love the coffee and the teas there. If you'd like to stay, the seating is limited but a very cool, vintage vibe. The staff is always friendly too.
google avatar

Patricia D.

Yelp
i come here for their butterscotch latte. it's clean and very hip inside, and service is always on point. it's a cute coffee shop to study/get some work done. parking is easy. they also have pastries you can pair w your drink!
google avatar

Sierra R.

Yelp
One of my fave coffee places ever! This is a hidden coffee gem in the middle of Glendale! Their orange vanilla latte over ice is so delicious. Yes, orange and coffee go together and I love the harmony. I hope they never take it off their menu. They also have a variety of pastries if looking to pair your coffee with it. The only down side is the parking. There's street parking, but it'll cost a buck for every 15 minutes. That doesn't bother me much. I'm a returning customer because I enjoy the way they make the coffee and they take their time with making it. Great plus is this is an Asian owned business and I especially love supporting small businesses.
google avatar

Elvira D.

Yelp
Years later and I'm still inadvertently ordering the same drink! The pineapple lime espresso tonic has a hint of everything I like in a cup, and you can't go wrong with it if you're into crazy flavors. The service is always friendly and too notch, and the ambiance here is very clean and calm. Now if only the parking could be the same. PARKING: You need coins for the meters. No card payments.
google avatar

Nancy B.

Yelp
I was looking for a good coffee shop in the area and this place came up. I decided to try it based on the reviews and it didn't disappoint. My husband got the iced butterscotch latte with oatmilk and I got the orange vanilla latte. They were both really good. The orange one was like a a party in your mouth. You can definitely taste the orange but it wasn't too over powering. The butterscotch was a bit on the sweeter side so less sweetness if you don't like your lattes too sweet. But overall they were both good.
google avatar

A G.

Yelp
Great selection of expresso beans. These guys know what they are doing. Frank is the shit! and his staff is cool too! You the man Frank, you the man! Thank you!

Em W.

Yelp
Love this place! Delicious coffee and I love the interior of the building. Service is always friendly too.
google avatar

Leslie M.

Yelp
Nice cappuccino with a great slice of banana bread that I just had to try. Conveniently close to Glendale Courthouse. Friendly service in small, clean and bright coffee house w cool music. 4 tables for 2 and 4 bar stool seats at window.
google avatar

Novia E.

Yelp
Another good Matcha Latte discovery! Went here to try out their matcha latte since I'm not a coffee enthusiast. I was quiet surprised that they use korean matcha from Jeju to make the drink. The taste is awesome! Although a little too much milk for me, but I can still taste the matcha. Parking is a little tricky because there's no parking space and you can't park or stop in front of the store. You have to ask someone to drop you off or park more forward by the 99 cents store.

Elisa Marie P.

Yelp
Coffee is fine. The seats are more aesthetic than comfortable. I've never had trouble finding a seat and you can usually find street parking close. The big windows make it very pretty inside.

Kelly D.

Yelp
Small space, I like their pineapple lime espresso tonic! Would come back to try some of their other items.
google avatar

Amber D.

Yelp
Came here on the 4th since I was craving coffee and saw they were open. I have passed by it numerous times and can finally say that I've been here. The barista was super friendly and helpful. I decided to get a drip coffee and a kouign Aman. The coffee tasted great. Not too strong and not watery. The kouign amann was very good. The place is not too big and I enjoyed that they were playing A Tribe Called Quest. It wasn't too loud so I definitely think if you can snag a table, this would be a good place to study/work.
google avatar

Tony B.

Yelp
We were driving around and I was jonesing for a coffee when I spotted Highlight because of the building it's located in. One of those great old historic buildings you find in Glendale & Pasadena :) The coffee here is very good, I had a Cortado (rich, smooth & strong) & my son had the Coffee Lemonade. I didn't try it but he said it was refreshing with a lemon forward flavor he enjoyed. There are a few tables & a standing counter in the small shop. Probably not a great place to work but perfect for a quick caffeine fix or a little conversation with friends. Inside was neat and clean as were the streets outside. They don't have a parking lot but there's plenty of street parking around. You can park on the street in front of the shop but it is metered. Note: The meters are coin only so bring your dimes, nickels & quarters! Free on Sunday ;) Highlight has a second location in Pasadena which I'm looking forward to trying soon :)
google avatar

Sonia B.

Yelp
My first time coming here. I was impressed. I lived in Seattle for seven years and believe me, you learn about coffee out there. This place is a really great example of what great coffee should taste like. Plus the gentleman that was working at the counter was super helpful and nice. He gave great suggestions and explained the different drinks and options. The coffee, I chose was really good. Not too sweet and I could actually taste the coffee not just the flavor or sugar. I am very impressed. I will definitely be coming back every time I come to my nail appointment. I would definitely recommend this business. Also it's really cute inside and very clean. Oh and if you are wondering what I got, it was the butterscotch latte with almond milk over easy ice. Amazing!!!!
google avatar

Kevin S.

Yelp
Friendly staff, easy to find, and on-street parking within a block. The coffee was delicious, as was the tea.
google avatar

Alin S.

Yelp
Service was very fast and nice. The indoor seating was cozy and they have a few tables and chairs out. My only reason for a 4/5 is that the drink was just okay. The chai latte was missing a lot of its spice and tasted too watered down for my tastes. I would definitely love to come back and try some of their other drinks!

Nicole C.

Yelp
butterscotch latte fire af! yall can't ever go away. This place has an awesome spot like right on the corner which is hella cool and natural lighting is always a plus. I've been going here since they opened :))
google avatar

TheFlying M.

Yelp
Highlight Coffee creates interesting and delicious coffee and tea! Try the fantastic Pineapple-Lime Espresso Tonic - the most refreshing coffee pick-me-up you'll ever find.

Kristine L.

Yelp
I needed a caffeine kick while doing some last minute Christmas shopping and stopped by Highlight Coffee nearby. It's a cute cafe on the corner of Broadway and Glendale. I liked the simple and modern decor with lots of natural lighting. It would be a good spot to work at. They don't have outdoor seating but have a few tables inside. I got the butterscotch latte which the barista recommended and it was pretty good. The butterscotch flavor was strong. It was very sweet which was expected since it's butterscotch but I think you can request to have it less sweetened. There is only street parking which was difficult to find on the weekend.
google avatar

Philippe L.

Yelp
The coffee was excellent and the pastry fresh and very good, the service was friendly. It will go again!
google avatar

Mansta A.

Yelp
Butterscotch coffee is to die for. Anytime I'm in Glendale I stop by here. I've even driven to town just to grab the coffee and in live 15 minutes away! Only downfall is they don't have parking so good luck!

JBird F.

Yelp
Very nice service and a great cup of specialty decaf coffee drinks. We were so happy that we could bring our breakfast from Muffin Can Stop Us as it was too cold to eat outside at that location. Thank you for welcoming us!
google avatar

Omayma R.

Yelp
This is my local! It's the most consistent cold brew in Glendale for sure. Staff are friendly and theres a little seating too. They have an unsweetened matcha option too!
google avatar

Alexis B.

Yelp
A coffee shop with great coffees and teas made with care and great service? (They have everything from teas to pour overs to butterscotch lattes to freddi/cold espresso! Something for everyone!) It's a great spot - but (just FYI) one without a public restroom! I stopped by with some family a week or so ago and we all drinks we liked and enjoyed our visit. Stop by - but don't come with a full bladder!

Nare S.

Yelp
i have an unhealthy obsession with their orange vanilla latte. its soo good and theyre so quick with the service too.
google avatar

Jessica P.

Yelp
High quality coffee here! Miss the old charm pre Covid but it's still such a sweet little coffee spot! I love a place that I can count in a good quality & delicious drip.
google avatar

Akiko I.

Yelp
- Locale Destination - It's on E Broadway and N Glendale Ave in Glendale. Ambiance: modern industrial, simple, casual. Service: quick Parking: street parking - Gluttony Expedition - Cappuccino: very mild coffee taste overall. Barista makes good froth milk. - Conqueror's Deduction - 3.5 stars. Good froth milk, smooth coffee taste. Not wow, but not bad.
google avatar

Arpie D.

Yelp
One of my favorite coffee spots in Glendale. The Orange Vanilla and Butterscotch lattes are my absolute favorite. Both hot and cold! Service is always pleasant and quick. Great place to hangout, enjoy some coffee and pastries and get some work done, chat with a friend or read a book!
google avatar

Sonja F.

Yelp
Amazing butterscotch latte. The staff is super nice and quick service and it feels light and airy inside. I love their coffee sleeves, the logo is really pretty. Come here and support a local business. A hidden gem!
google avatar

Abigail F.

Yelp
I always enjoy a warm Orange Vanilla Latte! Everyone is super friendly!! I just watched a barista run onto a bus to bring a woman her drink. If that dedication to customer service doesn't convince you to go...get your sh*t together. Will always be back. Will always recommend.
