The 18 Essential Restaurants in Budapest

"Located on a quiet side street in downtown, Hilda is a modern Hungarian restaurant known for its commitment to top ingredients. Marbled Mangalica pork comes from a farm in eastern Hungary, sweet paprika from the paprika heartland near Kalocsa, and fresh trout from Tahitótfalu. The restaurant’s interior is decorated with colorful Art Nouveau tiles, and plush midcentury chairs are tucked into cozy, low-lit corners. Hilda is an ideal destination for a special date night enhanced by Hungarian wines." - Tas Tobias

We had an incredible experience at Hilda. The service was attentive and welcoming, and the food—absolutely phenomenal. Every dish was thoughtfully crafted, beautifully presented, and bursting with flavor. From start to finish, every bite was a delight. The highlight was the dessert, Mákos nudli—easily one of the most creative and memorable desserts we’ve ever had. Hilda truly showcases the best of contemporary Hungarian cuisine. Highly recommend!

Delicious stew and meatloaf as mains accompanied by a medium bodied Hungarian wine 🍷. As starters had a salad and artichoke onion soup but the palate was different to our familiar taste and found them on the sour side. Still nicely presented. Too full for dessert. Service excellent.

Nice Hungarian restaurant near the city center. We stopped by at lunch on a Saturday without reservation and had a good experience. The menu offers traditional plates from the Hungarian cuisine, also with vegetarian options. I suggest as main dish the duck with cabbage rolls, remarkable. Portions were generous, service was impeccable and the price is fair ( with an appetizer and main dish - no wine - we spent around 40€ each)

We went to this restaurant not expecting very much but it went above our expectations. Great, cosy and intriguing interiors and design. Food was very pleasantly good, and better than what we thought it may be. We describe the food as elevated and modern Hungarian cuisine with a slight Asian fusion twist, but it all came together quite well. Book ahead as it was full when we arrived and wouldn’t have been seated with prior reservations. Service was great and they gifted us with a complimentary birthday dessert!

On of the most amazing, wonderful, delightful & pleasurable Hungarian restaurants. Let me start with the atmosphere; a warm & cozy place where you feel like home, you don’t want to leave your chair as you can enjoy the decoration of the place. Second let me talk about the food, I just arrived in the city from a long road trip and heard amazing recommendations about the food, start ordering appetizers and would really recommend their traditional Hungarian soup and it’s a mixture of homemade and warm feeling that you enjoy every drip of it 🤤, also don’t miss on ordering Duck Liver as it’s cooked in an amazing & balanced way, you should not miss those dishes for your appetizers. As for the main course I would recommend the rabbit dish, don’t wanna spoil the enjoyment of every bit. My first traditional Hungarian meal and would really really recommend it, as I added Hungarian food on my favorite food list. Would like to highlight one important point, the staff are welcoming and helpful, they welcomed us in a warm way and they did went the distance to make sure that our staying was joyful, they kept giving us updates on our meals, asked us about our meals after each course, it’s a normal thing to do but the way they approached and asked about it was very welcoming. My respect and greetings to those who are working today 🤝🏼

We enjoyed a wonderful meal at Hilda. The staff were friendly, helpful and clear. The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated, from the bar, the mosaic to the overall colour scheme. The atmosphere is equally pleasant, with soft music you can still have a conversation at the same time. The food was delicious. Plenty of truffle on bread and the rabbit was roasted and put inside a crispy pancake with a mustard/ vegetable sauce. My partner really enjoyed his goulash. Overall, very enjoyable, we loved it.

Beautiful interior, kind service, and really delicious food :). The food is traditional but with a modern twist making it even more interesting and appealing. An angus beef tartare - fresh, well seasoned, all in all good dish. And the goulash was TOP. Beautiful combination of flavors and texture :). Highly recommend! :)
