"Everything about this Italian restaurant, from the handwritten specials on the chalkboard and the small tables to the food itself, feels like something you could find in your own home. And with great daily specials like No Corkage Fee Monday and Wine and Pasta Wednesday, eating here is always a deal. We like the meatballs served with spongy focaccia and a ton of red sauce, and the scallops with barley and pumpkin puree." - Will Kamensky

Lovely brunch menu, chill and friendly place opposite a nice little park for those with kids who can't sit still for long! Try the moist and creamy French toast and the excellent savoury bread pudding with a side of bacon. The croque monsieur was tasty but a touch dry, but the 'pop tart' and custard egg where a delight.

That Chocolate Egg is amazing. A perfect marriage between Creme Brulee and Chocolate Moose! The flavor is one of a kind too. Then the Korean Style Fried Rice was to dye for. Rich in flavor and light in texture. We polished the plate in less than 5 minutes. Although wished there is some meat protein in it too.

The place looks inviting and nice from in and outside. Unfortunately the food is very subpar. Both of our dishes were super salty and impossible to eat. Even the side salad! Also the whole composition and ingredients didn’t fit together. Snap peas and eggs just don’t go together for instance. Service was kind of slow but friendly. Might be a good spot if you are just looking for drinks.

I’ve eaten at a lot of brunch places before and I’m reviewing based on my experience here. I was disappointed overall with quality of food and service. If you’re after eggs for breakfast, this is not the place. I mean, look at the egg I was served. When I complained about it, I asked for one fried egg to replace the catastrophe that was served. I received two fried eggs and was charged an additional $6. Couldn’t be bothered with complaining again so I’m leaving this honest review in hope that people will take note of the experience. There are much better places within the vicinity.

While the service is fantastic and very attentive, the food is underwhelming. The waffle in the chicken and waffle wasn’t well made and the chicken tasted very gamey. It’s not worth the prices.

What a great find on the edge of the Mission District. The chicken breast dish is one of the best I’ve had! Cauliflower was also flavorful. Great service too.

I love this place menu changes and everything is always super tasty! The Chefs here are very good at what they do!

Food was pretty average and the portions were small. Cute ambiance though, and they take reservations!

Yelp
I came here with a group for a birthday and it was a delight! The interior is minimalistic, modern, and sleek. It's great for date night as well. The SF restaurant week set menu was perfect. We enjoyed Quail + Veal Sweetbreads, Don Juan manchego (and delicious bread), Wild Boar Tenderloin Polenta +Natural Blonde Morel + Wild Ramps+ Cherry Jus, Olive Oil Cake Yuzu + Strawberry Compote (very unique dessert), a banger of a starter with Yellowfin Crudo Jeow Som, seaweed and rice crisp, Mt. Lassen Trout Radish +White Asparagus+Trout Roe, and Braised eggplant. Everything was delicious, their taste complex. Service was wonderful.

Yelp
DO NOT TRUST THE REVIEW RATING; Many of these reviews are for Marlena which had a star. FOLIAGE is not the Prix Fixe experience you can find elsewhere in SF. Okay to start, I feel bad. They had one person acting as host and server and he was obviously overwhelmed... That said he dropped the ball many times. We came for our anniversary and there was a series of endless errors/weird moments. To start: * The service was slow and he comp'ed us a bread and butter service. But he told us how another table ordered it and left abruptly so they had it extra. Don't tell us that, just comp us the bread. * For the first course, they did the Crudo on melons. Except on one of the two plates, THEY FORGOT THE CRUDO. It was weird and awkward. I asked the server about it and he told me the chef realized after he served it. But they didn't fix it. The fish is the most important part of the dish... Like what? * He forgot our wine and I had to nudge him for the bottle. He served my wife a full glass and saw there was a bug in her glass so he replaced it with a fresh empty glass but used the same bottle. We paid for a bottle, not a bottle minus a glass. He should have replaced the whole bottle. * We got a surprise item off the menu, it wasn't great. They also reused the same peach compote that came with the dessert. Uncreative. * Overall service was slow. Table next to us, he also forgot their wine and asked them what their order was again halfway through. * He served the desert, walked away... And then came back to explain what it was. * We got comped a free cookie... Overall they should have decreased our total bill due to the lack of fish and only giving us 3/4's a bottle of wine. 18% gratuity was built-in. I felt bad for the server but overall if you're looking for a Tasting Menu, this is not the place. There's plenty of better tasting menu locations across the city.

Yelp
Since we really loved Marlena, we've been excited to try Foliage since it opened and had high hopes. Finally made it there on Mother's Day for their Sunday Family Dinner. It's a family style pre fixe menu. The only thing you choose is your the protein/main course for the entire table and everything else just comes out. There's also the option to add on servings of the other main course option, as well as bread and butter. We went with the trout for the table with a brisket add-on single serving for all of us to taste. The trout was solid but the brisket was very under seasoned, although after adding some salt, it was more enjoyable. The sides are where the dinner fell short. We didn't enjoy the odd egg and potatoes frittata and side of baked beans -- both dishes were bland and underwhelming. We liked the other side of potatoes cooked with onions and peppers, as well as the biscuit. But something about having sides consist mostly of beans, eggs and potatoes, more potatoes, and a biscuit left a lot to be desired. The salad they served was excellent though - it was the best dish of the meal - and I'd recommend the bread and butter add-on. Dessert of lemon cake with meringue was good but not memorable. Not much has visibly changed about the ambiance since Marlena -- it's still casual, modern and inviting. The service was also excellent. Overall our experience was fine, but underwhelming and not memorable. While trying it out on a regular night might be better since you'd have more options, we're not in a hurry to return.

Yelp
Came here on a quiet Thursday night for an anniversary dinner. Immediately greeted with a warm welcome and complimentary champagne. We booked a table near opening so we were the first to come in. A few tables trickled in after us. Towards the end of the night, there was a large holiday party. Dimly lit, next to the window & on a misty evening = great vibes! We ordered the scallop crudo, which was delicious. The added hibiscus flavor really made it sweet. We also ordered the pumpkin seed milk, bread and trout mousse toast with caviar. Both appetizers were amazing. I loved the curry flavoring in the butter. The trout mousse toast was definitely a 10 out of 10. We also ordered the mushroom soup which I found to be a bit too heavy and salty, but you can use the milk bread to dip. I enjoyed the black cod and my partner loved his beef cheek. I found the cod to be a bit underwhelming but it was cooked perfectly. My partner's beef cheek was delicate and rich. For desserts, had the devil's food cake which was a nice topping to end the night. I loved the appetizers but felt that the main and soup was so polar to one another (in terms of seasonings), so I would give the food an over score of 7/10. On the other hand, my partner loved the soup (and finished mine) and his main. I understand that this is a rotating menu, so I will definitely be back to give it another try.

Yelp
I was really excited to try this place. They offer an affordable four course menu in a really gorgeous space (formerly occupied by Marlena). My friend and I came here for Saturday dinner. They had options for appetizers, entrees and desserts. The two of us decided to pick different dishes and shared so we can sample most of the menu. There were some hits and misses. The appetizers included sashimi-grade amberjack with flax seed crumble and rutabaga with Asian pear. These were really good dishes. We also ordered the pumpkin seed milk bread with espelette cultured butter. I liked the bread a lot but not sure about the butter. The next course was their ricotta gnocchi with foraged fungi, chicory, green apple and allium jus. This dish did not work for me - the individual components were good but the whole dish felt disjointed (gnocchi with the mushrooms and some great sauce would have been perfect). For the entrees, the steak was great and the highlight of the meal. The cod was good with crispy skin but it was a bit too salty for me. The desserts were mixed as well - the sticky toffee was way too sweet but the pavlova with chamomile cream was great. My friend had green tea with her dessert but the tea wasn't good. Service was OK - I got the feeling that they were missing a server that night and there was a bit of a wait between the entrees and the desserts. I really loved the space. With tax and tip, this ended up being about $115 per person - a really good value for the meal. I think they are still figuring things out and I'll probably try them again in a few months.

Yelp
My husband and I recently enjoyed dining at Foliage and trying their prix fixe menu for the first time. When I entered the restaurant, I was impressed by the beautiful decor and the welcoming atmosphere. The restaurant gives diners a clear view into the kitchen, which adds excitement and transparency to the dining experience. The staff at Foliage provided exceptional service all through the evening, attending to our needs with warmth. I would like to address some negative reviews I have come across regarding the "quality" of ingredients at Foliage. I must say that I find such claims to be baseless. Our meal was a testament to the kitchen's dedication to using top-notch ingredients that made me want more. The milk bread was heavenly, with a perfect balance of softness and flavor. The cabbage with mushrooms was a delightful combination, showcasing the chef's expertise in creating harmonious and satisfying dishes. (I've never had a unique combination of flavors like that dish.) The cod, cooked to perfection, was the highlight of the evening, with its delicate texture and delectable taste. And let me not forget to mention the banana pudding, which was hands down one of the best I've ever had. Foliage left me tinkled-pink. The restaurant's decor, open kitchen view, and great service (especially the great wine pours) set the stage for a memorable winter evening. Give it a try; I'm confident you won't be disappointed.

Yelp
I had to call the restaurant the next day to ask for a refund for the erroneous charge on the bill, and they refunded me.

Yelp
We had an early dinner so the restaurant wasn't crowded, and the service was pleasant and attentive. The food was good but not great. The portion size is surprisingly small, even for the mains. My husband asked for more of the complimentary bread, and was surprised to see an added charge of $7 on the bill. Another thing that surprised us was the duck breast had a $20 extra charge. We both didn't notice it on the menu since the charge is located on the right side of the menu. I'm glad we tried this restaurant but we probably will not come back since we paid $267.88 for 2 people, got so little food and went home hungry. It was not a satisfying experience. The items we ordered: - Amberjack Crudo was very tasty, the mac nut adds a nice crunch (5/5). - Shrimp Toast was crispy on the outside and had great flavor (5/5). - Ricotta Gnocchi was fine but underwhelming (3/5). - Local Black Cod was perfectly cooked, favorite dish for the evening (5/5). - Muscovy Duck Breast - the meat wasn't tough but there were a lot of veins within the meat that made it tough and chewy, and I didn't like the sauce (2/5). - White Chocolate Budino - absolutely delicious, a great dessert (5/5). I wish they offered more than one option for dessert though.

Yelp
I think one strange takeaway for me here is that we reserved for a near Christmas dinner at 5pm because I hate going to the city late and finding parking etc., and for the entire two hours (5-7pm) on a Friday night, there were no other diners in the whole place. The server was really nice, but felt like because we were the only diners, either she felt compelled to keep talking to us, or she was just super nice, either way it was a little different that we had like a whole 10 min discussion not about the food and just about life, while we were waiting to eat one of our courses. I think while it was pretty affordable, I felt like the flavors were just all over the place. There was an amazing truffle mushroom soup, but it was literally ruined by diced raw apples or some sort in there. The flavor clash was really unnecessary and took away from the umami of the well made soup. There were also other instances where they used high end ingredients, but in contest with each other, so that it didn't turn out as well. I guess they had a Michelin star at some point (perhaps still does?) but it doesn't quite feel that way. They had gotten on a best restaurants in the US list for 2023, but I think perhaps they need a bit more time to curate their menu a little better.

Yelp
Quick Summary Excellent dinner, service and ambiance. The add ons were worth trying and were perfect to split for a party of 4 (milk bread, the spaghettoni and roasted lamb loin). I would say the hokkaido scallop, nettle ravioli, seared black cod, and glenn cherry were my favorite of the options of the prix-fixe meal. Pretty fair pricing at $75 per person for their 4 course menu Food- 5 stars Milk bread- it was a good starter for the meal and you can get refills if you'd like. Really nice to dip in on their butter or the many sauces of the prix fixe meal Hokkaido scallop- sweet and light. Beautifully present and very good Spaghettoni- this was the perfect portion for the 4 of us. Heavy and savory and loved the crispy of the noodles complementing with the caviar Seared black cod- this was very good. Great flavor and perfectly seasoned Sakura pork collar- this was good and incredibly soft. I would still opt for the black cod over the pork though Roasted lamb loin- this was incredibly good and worth the add on. Incredibly juicy, tender and flavorful Glenn Cherry or Chocolate rye- pretty solid desserts to end the night Service Excellent service throughout. Kudos to the great servers for the night! Bottom Line Pretty solid tasting menu that doesn't break the bank. Highly recommend Marlena for any occasion!

Yelp
Absolutely deserving of their Michelin Star. From the attention of detail to the food, to the friendly staff, it was a great experience. Each item was cooked amazingly and the was very unique and tasty. I did not think the wine was anything special, but I did find the food to be very stellar. Additionally, the pricing is very reasonable given the location and Michelin reputation. What I disliked in most of SF area was how crowded all the seating was; however, Marlena is spaced out enough to feel like you have your own space. It is not the biggest restaurant, but enough to feel separated from others. I also liked the that the kitchen was open so you could watch them cook and interact with the chefs who were very willing to tell you what they were doing. The place was kept clean and my napkin was folded when I left, with constant refilling of my water. Would definitely recommend and come back. Easy 5/5. Ambience: 5/5 Service: 5/5 Food: 5/5

Yelp
I revisited Marlena recently to celebrate the birthday of a dear friend. Coincidentally, the last time I dined at Marlena back in 2021 was also for a birthday. That fall of 2021, Marlena had just received their first Michelin star - no small feat, given that they were only open for a year and established during the pandemic. Led by the experienced husband-and-wife team of chef David Fisher (former CdC at Bird Dog, Sorrel) and pastry chef Serena Chow Fisher (Eleven Madison Park, Bird Dog, Backhaus), this Bernal Heights spot has been highly adaptable to the times, starting with takeout picnic boxes and outdoor-only dining. They even did a "summer camp" pop-up at Hotel Zeppelin while undergoing renovations. Throughout the changes, their vision of affordable and upscale prix fixe dining has remained consistent. In my three visits, the price of the four-course menu has remained shockingly reasonable for San Francisco - $55, $65, and now $75. The concise menu has two options for each course, with optional supplements for the table. Marlena features seasonal, California cuisine that highlights vegetables, pasta, and seafood. On my last visit, we did find the starters to be forgettable, but the mains and supplements were a hit among the table. The grilled sakura pork collar was satisfyingly succulent, and a roasted lamb loin was made even better with morels and black garlic sauce. A decadent spaghettoni in creamy little neck clam beurre blanc had a generous amount of osetra caviar and trout roe. Pastry chef Serena's soft milk bread with cultured butter is a must add. And her creative desserts are a joy to experience! I was enamored with a shiso mint chocolate chip ice cream, which should be a staple flavor found in grocery stores. And a rhubarb funfetti cake and brown butter ice cream situation was icing on the cake (couldn't resist this cliché!). Service was great all around as well. And while I selfishly want to see Marlena remain at a rare sub-$100 price point for upscale dining in SF, I do hope the team will expand their vision and perhaps offer longer tasting menus in the future!

Shirene B.

Yelp
I had the pleasure of dining at Marlena before the chefs departure, as the meal was excellent. The server we had was reminiscent of one of our favorite sommeliers at Trinitas, so service was friendly and not stuffy at all. The ambiance was nice with moderate noise, and each table had its own intimacy. We decided to adhere to our servers' advice and order opposites on the tasting menu so we could taste a little bit of everything. We started with the Farro Verde vs. Hokkaido Scallop, I preferred the scallop as it was nice and fresh. Then it was the Charcoal Cavatelli vs. Koshihikari Rice, I preferred the cavatelli as I love burrata. We opted to add the Spaghettoni supplement and was not disappointed. Entrées were Seared Black Cod vs. Grilled Sakura Pork Collar, both were equally delicious and I'm glad I got to try both. Desserts were Early Season Glenn Cherry vs. Chocolate Rye, I enjoyed both as the chocolate rye went nicely with the zinfandel we ordered, but I'm starting to prefer fruity desserts over chocolate ones. I can't wait to try the food at 7 Adams and hope eventually David and Serena can open a new Marlena.

Jarred M.

Yelp
Food was fantastic, but the service was terrible. We had a 7:15 reservation and didn't get seated until 7:35. The waiter did not come to our table until 8 to welcome us or ask what we wanted (mind you it's pre fixed so should be faster). It took some time to get our meals, and when we did, it was not our table's order. I finally had to ask the hostess where the meal was, and she brought us our dessert instead of the main course. There hasn't been a restaurant in San Francisco that has an automatic gratuity where the service has also been good, so I blame that. Really wanted to like this place but paying premium prices for sub par service isn't worth it .

nick s.

Yelp
Went to Foliage mid-week. Delightful service, and the food was exceptional in its creativity. Very unique with a luxurious feel at a very reasonable price. Recommend the mushroom soup. Will definitely come back.

Sammi O.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious. Food Highlights - super soft milk bread with flakey salt (worth the add on) - the farro verde was a yummy, tart salad covered in hollandaise sauce (never had anything like it and was one of my favorites) -spaghettoni is must get add on for the table that has the best sauce and texture (my favorite dish of the night) -pork collar was so tender and flavorful -desserts were super decadent and great as well, the rye shortbread on the chocolate cake was the standout I was more neutral towards the risotto and scallops, but literally everything was perfectly done and plated. Great flavors overall and the wait staff and hosts were very welcoming and kind. It is a beautiful place to dine and celebrate a special occasion. They gave us a little birthday treat!!

Catherine L.

Yelp
Marlena is truly deserving of its Michelin rating. It's a restaurant that combines some of the freshest seasonal ingredients with the quintessential essence of California dining. For just $75 this is an exceptional tasting menu that combines a unique blend of flavor profiles, the ambience of a high class, restaurant, and impeccable service. I love that the restaurant is hidden in a neighborhood and reminds me of provincial French dining This is a tasting menu with three supplemental courses, including bread, caviar, pasta, and a lamb dish. I highly recommend getting the bread rolls to start as they are so fluffy and flavorful. The cured butter paired with the moss and salt is such a good combination. You will definitely get full from the meal . Overall: 9.5/10 Price: $$$ Must get: tasting menu, if going with a friend I recommend trying both options for each course to share

Cynthia C.

Yelp
Beautiful interior and very reasonable Michelin prix fixe at $75/pp. With the east bay power outage yesterday, they were very understanding of the flux in schedule - so accommodating and warm. And they answer their phone before and during service! Bravo! Solid meal - standouts for me was the beet tartare, great texture and flavors. Kanpachi starter was a fresh and unique take. The pork, my piece was like pork belly - so this fatty was happy. Pastry chef is on pointe. Also love that all the service charges are all wrapped in to the final bill and once everything is swiped all that is needed is a scribble. Straight and to the point - love it. I plan ahead to eat so it's nice that Marlena offers easy to secure reservations via Resy. Great modern Californian food with a lot of emphasis on textures.

Angel R.

Yelp
I had a great experience celebrating my birthday dinner at Marlena's. There were a couple of selections to be made for the tasting menu. I got the scallops, ravioli, pork, and chocolate dessert. My dining companion got the scallops, white asparagus, black cod, and rhubarb funfetti cake. On top of this we also added all the add-ons such as the milk bread, spaghettini, and lamb. The scallops were served were served with corn soup and sea grapes - this was one of our favorite dishes of the night! The scallops were sweet and unctuous. And the corn soup/sauce really brightened up the dish. The second course for me was ravioli which was rich, so the portion was just right. They served the add-ons of spaghettini with the second course, vs serving separately as it's own course, which I didn't like. By the time I was ready to eat the spaghetti I it was already getting cold. The pasta was also a bit over. The third course of pork was a healthy serving. The pork itself was fall apart tender, the fava beans and potatoes accompanying it was also good to have in all one bite with the pork. The black cod was also amazing. The fish was flaky, moist and flavorful. The skin was perfectly crispy. The add-in lamb was served at the same time, just as with the second course. The fish itself was absolutely delicious, with black garlic jelly. But again I wish it was served as a separate course. The desserts were good and they sent out a candle and a mini cake to celebrate my birthday, which was nice. Overall, I would absolutely recommend Marlena's. It's an incredible value as well. My only with was that the add-ons be served with different timing and also that they have more non-alcoholic beverage choices. My dining companion was not drinking and choices were very limited.

Bo B.

Yelp
I would've given this place one star if none of the dishes were good. Skip the pasta courses. The dessert was the best course. The restaurant didn't tell me until I showed up that I would be dining outside. SF is very cold every night. The outside structure isn't fully enclosed. The heat lamps only burn one part of your head while the cold wind blows at your face and body. It totally takes away from the experience. There should be an option to pick where you sit. I don't understand the Michelin star. Food: Cured kanpachi - decent Tagliatelle - bland and mushy; overcooked pasta and too much sauce; could've used a crunchy ingredient for texture Sea urchin caviar chitarra - overly salty, over sauced, overcooked pasta, too much citrus; definitely don't get the supplement Covina - good; fish was soft and juicy; stuff on the side was unnecessary and didn't compliment the fish Semifreddo with cake and strawberries - delicious

Tim L.

Yelp
Very impressive - I was able to snag a reservation here for the day after Valentine's Day, and there were absolutely no regrets. Marlena has definitely earned their reputation + Michelin Star, and I can't wait to see what they achieve in the future. Let me start off by saying you're getting an amazing experience at a fraction of the cost of other starred restaurants. Their tasting menu was $75 per person, which I thought was very reasonable for the quality and amount of food we got. We started off with the milk bread ($2.50pp) and this was one of my favorite parts of the meal. The bread was so soft, and was the perfect amount of sweet + salty. The butter just melted in and made everything so much more delightful too. After this, we had the hermosa, which reminded me of a Yuzu Yellowtail Sashimi, except take away the yuzu, add orange instead, and add some texture. Delicious. For the second real course, we had the tagetielle, which was tasty and well made, but probably not my favorite off the menu. It had a citrusy flavor to it, but the noodles were a bit too soft for my liking. Would probably skip this one next time. We added the uni/seaweed/caviar carbonara as a supplement ($35) and while the portion size was smaller than expected, it was delicious, as you should expect with all those ingredients :) I'd probably pass on this too if I come again, just because I felt the price was too high for this. The main was definitely the star of the show. We got the black cod with miso butter glaze and it was perfect. The flavors all worked together, and the items on the side (I think it was a brussel sprout, clams, and some caviar) all complemented the dish wonderfully. Would definitely get this again. And to top things off - dessert! Both desserts on the tasting menu (coffee cardamom cake + mascarpone semifreddo) were absolutely delicious. So much varying texture, and the flavors were just right, not too sweet. All in all, this was an amazingly executed prix fixe menu that really showcases a lot, at a very reasonable price. Highly recommend.

Yelp
One star michelin WELL DESERVED! The ambiance inside and set up is absolutely gorgeous: dim lighting, sleek black tables, artsy art paintings all make you feel like you are doing modern fine dining. I'm not joking when I say this: Eat with more people so there's more different things ordered. AKA more for you to explore. There's a fixed 4 course menu with 2 options per course. My boyf and I each picked what the other didn't so that we could taste the whole menu. Drool worthy!! Some of the most intelligent and intricate dishes I've had. There was not one bad dish on the entire menu. It is SO affordable too when it comes to upscale dining. The service was impeccable. Bussers were attentive and our waiter made sure we were consistently doing alright. FYI: No bars, just wine. Come here! It's an experience you have to have for yourself.

Aubany G.

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant with great food. A Prix Fixe menu with each course having an option of one of two plates with additional supplements to add on. Each dish was beautifully created, but my only complaint is that the portions were super tiny of each dish, including supplements. We chose to order the entire menu so that we could try each dish and share. While we were full at the end, I still think I'd rather pay a tad more per person and have slightly larger portions. Service was impeccable!

Helen H.

Yelp
TLDR: It hurts me to write this review because I wanted to like Marlena so much (I took a friend here for her birthday) but unfortunately I did not enjoy the food. I did not walk away from the meal thinking any of the dishes were amazing, except for the supplemental milk bread course which was fantastic. I still give it 2 stars because I thought the ambiance and service were nice, but the flavors were so strange to me that I can't recommend this restaurant, at least when it's serving the dishes we had. FOOD: - This is a 4 course meal with two choices per course, so you and a companion can try all 8 dishes. - There's also a supplemental milk bread course for $2.50 per person that I would HIGHLY recommend, as it was the best thing I had all night. - Portion-wise, the meal was filling for two, but I can't say that I felt satisfied or happy after we finished everything. ENVIRONMENT & AMBIANCE: - The restaurant is beautiful. I loved the interior decorations, which makes the restaurant seem newly renovated but with dim lights that add an air of "romantic dark coffee shop" vibes. - There is street parking outside the restaurant, especially since it's on the corner, but it's quite far from the heart of SF given it's south of the Mission SERVICE: - The service was great and we felt well taken care of. - For my friend's birthday they created a mini cupcake of sorts and put a candle in it, which was nice of them I know this is a relatively affordable Michelin star experience, but I just didn't think the food made me happy, even if it was unique or technically well done. -

Derek S.

Yelp
Came by for dinner the other night and it was a world class experience! Since my last 2 visits, Marlena has gone through a complete remodel and the difference is night and day! The interior is modern and minimalistic while retaining the outer structure. In addition, the restaurant now has a Michelin star! Just like on my previous visits, the 4 course tasting menu starts at $65 which I believe might the most cost effective Michelin starred restaurant in the city! I opted for most of the add-ons during my last visit starting off with the milk bread which was fantastic as usual. The butter is soft and fragrant! The picnic canape add-on was a treat. A few bite-sized morsels showcased the chef's cooking precision. Excellent and well done. The appetizer and pasta dish were excellent. Perfectly sized portions, super fresh ingredients and a well balance of flavors. The pasta dish for the evening was on saltier side though. Opted for the pork loin as the main entree and it was superb. Most of the time, eating pork loin is like eating sandpaper. The pork loin for dinner was cooked to a medium rare, was super juicy and flavorful. Portions were extremely generous too! Added the A5 Wagyu Ribeye cap and it was phenomenal. The marbling on the ribeye was excellent and cooked to a perfect medium rare. The side of black garlic and mushroom complemented the ribeye perfectly. The desserts of the evening were a treat being light, refreshing and also included a bonus from the kitchen which was a nice touch. Service by the staff was attentive. 20% service charge along with a 5% SF employee mandates are included with the bill. ~$150/head after tax, service, and SF mandates.

Yelp
Priced at $75 a person Marlena is the cheapest Michelin starred meal that i've ever had! We opted to add on a few different items since the menu is already such a good price. We added the marlena milk bread which is definitely a must order item, it was some of the best bread that i've ever had! We also added on two Hokkaido Uni Croustades and that was probably my favorite bite of the meal, insanely satisfying flavors and textures! Then we had our first courses, I got the farro verde and it was delicious, a great first course! Next, I had the Nettle Ravioli which was my other favorite dish of the night. The last extra thing that we added on was the Dungeness crab pappardelle, which was also very delicious. Sadly, it kind of went downhill from here, I got the sakura pork collar and honestly it wasn't very good, it was overcooked and the sauce with it was extremely sweet and didn't go well with the pork. My boyfriend wasn't a fan of his main course at all either, the poached grouper. I really didn't like my rhubarb + cream dessert either, it was somehow really dry even though there was ice cream with it. The last thing is my biggest issue with Marlena, the bathrooms. As a young female I felt extremely uncomfortable being in an enclosed bathroom (normal bathroom with a waiting area and 3 stalls and sinks) with a bunch of men, there were 3 men occupying each stall and 2 men waiting behind me to use the restroom, this is one of the most uncomfortable that i've ever felt at a restaurant and I could tell the men behind me felt awkward too. I'm completely fine with all gender bathrooms if its singular use, otherwise it puts guests in an uncomfortable situation and for that reason alone I wouldn't come back.

Yelp
Update: this review is of Marlena from March 2023. I haven't tried Foliage. Not really sure how this got a Michelin star. Everything tasted too salty. Way overpriced :/ sadly nothing special

Yelp
I was lucky to get a chance to try Marlena two days before they were closing for their remodel.  Seasonal 4 course menu with a couple of optional add-ons, it is such a delightful evening especially when you have even better company and conversation to go along with the food.   The Marlena Milk Bread was soft and delicious with the smooth cultured butter so worth the $2.50pp.  The cured hiramasa was beautifully presented but could have used a touch more flavor which the little gem salad boasted. It would have been great if the menu offering could be clearer as it said 'California Asparagus" which to me meant the vegetable in a hollandaise sauce so we both went with the agnolotti.  If I had known it was in a soup/puree form, we would have gotten one of each like the other couple.  The sakura pork loin was fork tender and my favorite of the evening and the corvina nicely balanced in flavor.  The chocolate creme and coffee cake was a perfect balance of indulgence without being too sweet so definitely prefer over the strawberry rhubarb.   It is a solid 4-4/12 stars for food but their unrushed service bumps it up to 5.

Yelp
My husband and I had dined at Foliage once before, in November of last year. It was his birthday dinner and we loved it. We decided to return for date night, and we made a dinner reservation for 7:30 pm on Saturday. We were so excited to dine here again since we had loved our experience the time before. We arrived and were seated promptly. Unfortunately that was the only prompt part of the entire evening. Every dish took between 20 to 30 minutes to come out. Dessert took even longer, about 40 minutes. The table next to us sat down an hour after we arrived and they got everything so quickly. We were finishing our entree when they got theirs. We got dessert served at the same time, which was after 10pm! Two and a half hours later. Two and a half hours for five dishes! This was a big fail from management. If you don't have enough people in the kitchen, fix the schedule. If you someone calls in sick, find another person to cover. If you can't find anyone, cover the shift yourself. Oh, and an automatic 18% gratuity when the service was this bad? That's outright theft. I would give them zero stars if I could.

Yelp
First let me say, I don't generally enjoy esoteric food at high prix fixes. I know this is a thing and that many people do like to amuse their taste buds with such fare, but I am both a cheapskate and a little limited in my palate. But my fancy ass friend shepherded us to Foilage after a gallery opening and I was quietly trapped. The opening starter of diced avocado in a melange of marinated pineapple sitting in chili oil was tasty - both tablespoons of it. The gnocchi in cabbage with a Gorgonzola crème sauce was likewise tastyish. Despite the $15 up charge, the beef filet was an unimpressive piece of meat - perhaps it was punishment for not ordering the sole, which my wife enjoyed very much. The accompanying but unidentifiable accoutrements were fun to look at, but not a delight to my taste buds. The dessert choices were not impressive - the olive cake was certainly something I could and would make at home. The white chocolate budino with huckleberries was not improved by finely ground peanuts. The serving size was restrained and I should be grateful for that given my bulging waistline. The service was friendly and polite. The waiter was a bit quiet in an introverted way, but took the time to explain each dish. My companions who ordered the wine pairing were happy with it. As I faced the wall I didn't really soak up much of the ambience but the space seemed pleasant enough in an unremarkable way. The bathroom was out of toilet paper and paper towels. For me, this was a three star experience but I am adding a star to compensate for my bias against this type of place. So some may find this a good match for their dining requirements, but next time I'll get some Thai food or something.

Yelp
Service is good. Food was just ok, but price and what you get ratio is not balanced. For $130/person price fixe, I expected something exceptional but thats not what we received.

Yelp
First I would like to say that Foliage is a beautiful restaurant and service was excellent. My only comment is based on the menu. My husband and I were celebrating our anniversary and we chose Foliage based on the menu posted on the website. To our disappointment we were informed upon siting at the table that the menu was a family style with only 3 mains to choose from (brisket, sole, & mushrooms) with three sides to share for a prefix of $55.00 everything tasted good the brisket was quit fatty but flavorful. I do think the price was fitting for the offerings. Please in the future post that Sundays are a different menu from your $75.00 prefix posted. We would have chosen a different night if we had known of the menu change.

Yelp
My boyfriend took me here for my birthday and I absolutely loved everything we had! Bonus tip to come in a pair so you quite literally get to try everything on the menu. It's $65 pp with a 25% tax and service charge included on the tab for all parties. I would recommend the milk bread (2.5pp) simply for the butter. It was so decadent and creamy, and it melted right away on the warm bread. The bread itself, however, was quite mediocre. Scallops were good, although some bites were super bitter. It may have been the mustard seeds, but I tried my boyfriend's order of it and his wasn't bitter. Would like to see more consistency across the dishes, but nevertheless the flavor was great and the scallops were extremely fresh. I loved the risotto and tagliatelle. Both were insanely delicious. The pork chop was generous in size and was quite juicy. The cod was buttery and perfectly seared. You might literally find yourself drinking the sauce after you finish the main entree. Desserts were pretty to look at but didn't particularly wow. Although we did really enjoy the cranberry creamsicle. It had a tart crust that was delicious. The service was great, we were late to our res but they made sure to get us seated quickly and even brought complimentary wine. Highly recommend this place for a special occasion (anniversary, birthday, fancier date night)!

Yelp
We had reservations, and got to the restaurant a little early. They run such a strong program that everything was timed perfectly and we got seated at our reservation time. The hostess, servers, and kitchen staff were all so kind and attentive to our needs. They took food allergens seriously, and let me know if anything I ordered was part of the things I couldn't eat. My partner and I ended up getting all the items offered so that we could have a taste. The tagliatelle was cooked al dente, and the flavors worked together. I didn't try the scallop tartare, but there was none left for me to try as my partner inhaled it. I think my favorites for this menu were the corvina and the pumpkin wreath. The corvina looked humble on the plate, but actually was the most complex of the dishes. Looking forward to trying other menus in the future!

Yelp
It took me so long to getting around to writing this review that the chefs have now departed. So it's unlikely the restaurant will be the same, but adding my review for when chefs David and Serena ran this spot. Excellent service and ambiance. Marlena somehow manages to feel cozy and neighborhoodly while also delivering a fine dining experience. My favorite dishes were the starters - the Hokkaido scallop tartare and the salt baked beets were both delicious. The milk bread is worth adding on given it's only $2.50. The tagliatelle was also delicious - the beef shoulder was exceptionally tender. The mains as usual I cared less about - the Sakura pork loin and roasted black cod were unmemorable. I also don't have a strong impression of the dessert, which makes me think I probably thought they were fine but not standout (we had pumpkin cheesecake and cranberry creamsicle).

Yelp
Located in a charming corner facing Precita Park (and former location of Marlena), Foliage offers a fantastic & cozy dining experience. The menu is prix-fixe, with 4 courses for $75. It was very easy to make decisions on what to get (the waiter offered helpful suggestions as well). I ordered the scallop, gnocchi, black cod, and toffee cake, and each was delightfully unique & tasty. We also opted for the add-ons, and especially enjoyed the pumpkin seed milk bread. Highly recommend to add this place to your bucket list -- we'll be back again!

Yelp
Delicious tasting menu - dessert being my favorite ! Congrats to the chef. $75 dollars and all food fresh from the season with rotating menu! New great spot, service was great - French modern ambiance

Yelp
Heard about them since they got the Michelin star and finally got a chance to come try their food and for this summer time , they are doing a pop-up at the hotel zeppelin since they are renovating their place and would open back in fall I think. So they have the tasting menu at 125$ which is a good price for the food I think but I actually came here spontaneously and actually doing the a la carte menu. They accept walk-in. We got a seat right the way after we got there. We ordered drink first , the toasted and fluffy was good the coconut flavor comes through and the marshmallow And even though they got the wrong order for the first one but it's all good since they just gave that to me on the house and the other drink was good too !!!! So I recommend to try their cocktails The food we ordered - salad with peach and avocado sauce underneath, so good and they're so nice to split it between me and my other half - salmon CRUDO was good also texture from the salt , great! - the shrimp was our favorite today , the tomato sauce was superb - chicken sandwich was juicy and crunchy and I love their sauce because of the sourness - chocolate mousse was smooth and not too sweet Overall for this dinner for me , just perfect I'm looking forward to go to their restaurant again after the renovation and try their tasting menu. See you Marlena , we will definitely visit you again chef David

Yelp
Visited this new Bernal Heights spot that has changed hands over the years and the food and service was excellent! It's a small restaurant so seating is limited. Prix fixed menu that changes every Wednesday. They allow a couple of choices at three of the four courses and have to say they were all very creative and excellent. Portions are all reasonably sized and meal was filling. Loved the scallops and highly recommend if you find them on the menu. Perfect place for a date night or small group of friends. Would definitely go back for another visit.

Yelp
Amazing service from the greeting on arrival. We were 15 minutes early but we were seated quickly. The server explained the menu and made good suggestions for our first visit. The dinner was delicious. As a couple we ordered the menu and shared so we had the full offerings of the restaurant. Extras worth having: The crab pappardele was fantastic. But, the Roast lamb loin was incredible. The sauce was worthy of a plate licking, it was that good. No I didn't actually do it but thought about it for too long. The desserts completed the meal . The chocolate rye and the rhubarb & cream were a perfect compliment to close our meal. I'd come back just to have the roasted lamb loin again. Great service, excellent balanced dishes. No wonder it's a full house all night long.

Yelp
TL;DR - Amazing pre-fixe meal! DE-LISH! Part of my restaurant tour for Infatuation SF's, Marlena did not disappoint. My favorite part of their pre-fixe is that you get one of two choices per course, which is similar to another restaurant called Trestle in Nob Hill area. Additionally, the pricing was acceptable for the quality of the meal, service, and number of courses. Their menu does change frequently, so if you eat here, you may have a different course option than mine. But I have no doubt that the meal will still be wonderful. For our first course, the appetizer was either a salad (not a shredded, but more whole) and a fresh fish bite (cured kampachi). The Kampachi was excellent; there was a great texture, and the fish was very fresh. For our second course, we had a pasta (tagliatelle) and a soup. The pasta was wonderful, the trumpet mushroom was aromatic. We also added the sea urchin chitarra as an add-on, this was more like a spaghetti type of noodle, and I loved how it had roe and caviar. Extremely decadent, and a true treat. I personally did love the heirloom carrot soup, but my partner did. The next course was more of an entree. We had an option of fish or chicken. the fish was a corvina, which was a much meatier fish, and the fish skin was perfectly seared. Crispy, perfectly salted. The sauce for the fish was excellent. Whereas the chicken breast was the most surprising to me. The texture was tender like like duck, but the taste was less gamey. I loved it, it truly surprised me. The final course was dessert, a chocolate cake or a mascarpone semifreddo. I loved the mascarpone semifreddo; it was the perfect amount and the perfect bite. Not too sweet, and the extra crunch on top was a perfect texture palette cleanser. While I opted not to have any wine or alcohol with this meal, since I ate on a Sunday, I think it would've paired well with a lot of their options. Overall, I highly recommend this as a birthday dinner, intimate date, or an elevated group dinner.

Yelp
I really wanted to like Marlena's, trust me I tried hard to. Going in I already high expectations after reading the reviews on Yelp and learning it's a Michelin-star-rated restaurant. The interior and service was top notch, I will say that. The waiters were very attentive, checked on our table multiple times and even wished my husband a happy birthday with a complimentary tiny (dried/flavorless) cake. However the food itself was seriously not worth the price point ($250 for 2 people). My husband and I opted to share and try all of the items on the menu. Sadly, all of the dishes we had were a big let down. The only item we really liked was the $30 supplemental dish of crab pasta which was extremely tiny (just as other Yelp reviews mentioned.) The 2nd decent dish was the bread and butter. The rest of the dishes were bland, not very flavorful and just overall disappointing. Even the dessert was not good and that's super disappointing! For $250 we expected so much more. To top it off they add a mandatory 20% service fee and of course the SF mandate fee. Plus the portions of everything was TINY. We went home and made ramen. What a birthday. I'm just sad the birthday boy didn't leave full/satisfied and that we wasted so much money here. Overall, I would not return and would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. There are so many other amazing restaurants in the city with Michelin stars that I would rather spend big bucks on.

Yelp
Congrats to Marlena on your first Michelin star! I treated my hubby to dinner here for his birthday. The tasting menu is super reasonable at $65 (for a Michelin star too!!), but I already knew we would get the add ons. We ordered everything on the tasting menu (1 of each dish), as well as 2x the milk bread and butter, and the A4 Wagyu. Our favorite was definitely the Wagyu, it was melt in your mouth deliciousness. It was definitely worth it at the $58(?) surcharge. All the food was fresh and executed perfectly. We were extremely full after our meal, which we were happy with because you never really know how these things will go, lol! Marlena felt very "neighborhood cool" and not super pretentious, which I liked! It was super cozy and the servers were very friendly. I also love how the servers explained each and every dish.

Yelp
Overall, the food here ranged from average to pretty tasty. My party ordered the entire menu and shared dishes to try. Highlights: - Hiramasa: I don't eat raw fish but my party said it was great - Tagliatelle: Citrusy and the black trumpet mushrooms were unique and delicious - Corvina: Skin was crispy and not over cooked - Dessert - Service: Servers were attentive and even brought out a (very) mini cake/candle for the birthday we celebrated, which was greatly appreciated. Meh: - Carrot veloute: I didn't think this was particularly tasty, it seemed to basically be a puréed veggie soup. The plankton tuile was tasteless and seemed to be there mostly for garnish/texture. - Pork collar: I feel like it's hard to make pork taste bad but this was dry and not very well seasoned. If this was a large portion, we might've sent it back. -"beet" tartare: I ordered this because I don't eat raw fish and the other option was hiramasa. It was decent and the beets had a natural sweetness but I feel like I could easily make this myself. I think this restaurant would've been four stars, if not for the portions. I was treating two others to a celebratory dinner, and was frankly a bit embarrassed by how small each dish was. Everyone in our party left a bit hungry (maybe hangry is the better term), which really spoiled the otherwise nice experience. I saw some others left this feedback as well, so I hope the restaurant takes this into consideration. I would rather pay more for more courses and/or larger portions. Will probably not go back unless this changes.

Yelp
Good tasting menu. We like the desserts and milk bread more than the other appetizers or mains. Seaweed risotto is very unique, in a good way. I used to live close by and so happy that they opened the restaurant.

Yelp
Tonight was BBQ! I had one of the best briskets outside of Texas! A flavor bomb of a crust, and a melt in your mouth interior.

Yelp
Came here for a nice holiday dinner with the family in town. Parking was quite easy to find with plenty of street parking, which is always a rare find in San Francisco. Even though it was cold, we sat outside and there were plenty heat lamps. They have blankets for you as well. There were 2 options for each course, so between 5 people, we were able to try everything. We also did the add- ons with the milk bread ($2.50/ person) and the A5 Wagyu ribeye cap ($58). Our menu for the night: 1st course: - brussel sprout salad: probably the greatest thing I tasted all night. My dad, who hates brussel sprouts, said he wanted to keep eating it after trying it. It is so good. - Mt. Lassen trout: This was a nice dish, very balanced and light. It's a small dish but very tasty. I especially liked the yuzu yogurt, that was really good with the trout. 2nd course: - rainbow chard cannelloni: Very cheesy and good. The pickled onion was definitely a nice addition or it would have been too heavy of a dish. - celeriac bisque: there is the option to add black truffle for $20. Would definitely recommend to if you can. This dish is also a bit heavy for me but it had a really nice flavor with the truffle. 3rd course: - Seared corvina: The fish was really soft and tender. Broth was nice and salty , it was just a little heavy for me. - berkshire pork collar: This was also very good. It just varied between plates. The pieces that were less fatty, were a little tough, but overall very good and tasty. 4th course: - satsuma curd cheesecake: This was my runner up for my favorite dish. The crust and custard were SO good! This has ruined all other cheesecakes for me I loved it. It's not your traditional cheesecake, but nice and light and just so tasty. - mint chocolate devil's food cake: The cook wasn't as moist as I wanted it to be sadly. The pomegranate seeds and the cream were very helpful, but I was meh on this dessert. The extras: - milk bread: also amazing! My whole family was shook by this bread. Softest roll ever but subtly sweet and salty. - A5 Wagyu ribeye cap: If you can, order this dish. It is so good! I thought it was way better than the entree/ 3rd course dishes we got. The potato was so good. Steak was probably the best steak I'd ever had, and the sauce is magic. Overall, we were pretty blown away by our meal. Everything was good with some top notch ones that I want to eat forever. The wait staff were also super nice and knowledgable about the dishes. Will definitely be coming again!

Yelp
Beautiful afternoon catching the last of the sunset in the city with my honey. ... then dinner at Marlena. This Michelin Star restaurant was recommended by our foodie nephew and it's a ten in our book! The four-course meal was plenty and yummy. We took them up on the wine pairing and it was a great decision. They're definitely generous with their wine. Service was outstanding! Plenty of attentive hands were around to provide a superior dining experience. This husband-and-wife-owned restaurant offers everything it takes to be a Michelin starred without being fussy or pretentious.

Yelp
I took the boyfriend here to celebrate him finishing his first semester in business school! What a fun experience to celebrate the occasion. We added the Marlena Milk Bread + Cultured Butter to start and yum--I could eat 20 of these. Their butter needs to be packaged up in a bucket for me to take home please. First, we had the Salt Baked Beets and the Hokkaido Scallop Tartare to start. The Beets were very nice with a great texture. The citrus added a nice burst of flavor with the crunch of the other elements in this dish. The scallop tartare was also nice with nice tanginess that made the scallops taste very fresh. Second, we had the both the Farroto Verde and the White Truffle Tagliatelle. The Tagliatelle was so delicious--the parmesan/butter/truffle combo made it honestly feel like an elevated homestyle Mac and cheese--more please! The farroto was a little underdone for my taste, but the flavor was robust and smokey--so good. Third, we had the Chicken Breast and the Wagyu. Not a fan of this preparation method of the breast, but the Wagyu rib eye cap was yum yum yum. Lastly, the desserts were honestly my FAVORITE. The Chocolate Rye was so rich and flavorful and all the fun elements made it such an enjoyment for each bite! The Pumpkin Wreath was a perfect dessert for the season--it made me feel like I was at a holiday party at home with such a nicely balanced spiced pumpkin crumble with--again--wonderful textured elements that made each bite a new type of experience. GET BOTH DESSERTS! Can't wait to come back and try the next menu of the season!!
