Himalayan Heritage Restaurant DC - Review - Adams Morgan - Washington DC - The Infatuation

"When you need to shut out the world and have some delicious Nepali and Indian comfort food, head to Himalayan Heritage in Adams Morgan. The curries here are packed with bold and peppery flavors, and it’s one of the few non-cafes on the strip open for lunch. It’s an excellent option when you want to take a solo break from work and dive into the embrace of sweet butter chicken and an endless stream of garlicky naan. Where to Find Dumplings of All Kinds in D.C. | Eater DC

"This is the place for Nepalese momos. Meat options include minced buffalo, goat, or chicken. A vegetarian version comes with carrot and cabbage. Try the Jhol momo with a choice of vegetable, chicken, or pork dumpling that are steamed and dipped into a stewed sauce." - Vinciane Ngomsi

Google
Great food and drinks. Family friendly restaurant. The dumpling soup a bit too salty but all the meats are really well seasoned and taste amazing.

Google
After walking by so many times, we finally stopped in and it did not disappoint! The restaurant is busy, quaint with nice ambiance. The servers and owner were extremely attentive and friendly. The veggie momos were to die for. We also got the mushroom matar, chili chicken and bread basket. Good portions (enough for leftovers with the curry!) and so tasty.

Google
Is it the hunger that's sweet, or the food?" — a familiar Nepali saying that comes to mind here. The place offers a decent taste of Nepali cuisine. It may not feel exactly like home, but it’s a good effort for those looking to reconnect with familiar flavors away from Nepal.

Google
Food was great! Definitely have the momo dumplings and the Himalayan Choela! 10/10. Himalayan Choela was one if the best dishes I've ever had. We got the Momo dumplings (5 pork & 5 buffalo), 2 appetizers, 2 main courses, garlic naan, and a dessert for 2 people and we finished everything! It was a good dinner experience. Food didn't take long to come. Chicken Tikka was good but really dry. The menu says is dry so be ready for it. Don't expect a juicy chicken. The flavor was good. I gave 4 to service because I made a reservation for 2. When we got there, 3 people came after us without reservation, and the manager (I assume) gave them a table before us. When we had a reservation & arrived first. Besides that all good. Good vibes.

Google
I mostly come here for duck Momos. I love them so much, I come just for them! Overall the food is very good, a bit spicy (keep that in mind), prices are very reasonable. We had a birthday dinner of 5 people, everyone had at least 2 martinis. We paid only about $250. The service was a bit slow though, we started ordering drinks in advance so we can get them on time and there were only few tables occupied.

Google
Absolutely wonderful service! I was suggested Daal Bhat and wasn’t disappointed! I got a little bit of everything I wanted and needed. I just wish I had a bigger stomach so I could have kept eating! The goat was so tender I’d fell off the bone, the dahl was very flavorful, the mustard greens were delightfully crunchy. The two pickled vegetables added that tangy acidity that was perfect with the luscious curry. I also had to get a glass of the chyang. Yum! I ate all my pickled vegetables and the waitress brought me more for free! I was in Himalayan heaven.

Google
5 stars, no notes. Get the dumplings (momo). We got the Pork momo dumplings Jhol with the tomato sesame broth, so delicious! Also the steamed chicken momo and the chicken Tikka masala. The ambience was so cozy, and service was very fast and attentive.

Google
I recently visited this Nepali restaurant after hearing so many good things about it. The place itself is quite cozy and has a nice ambiance, which made for a pleasant dining experience. The service was also commendable, with the staff being attentive and friendly. However, I found the food to be just okay, not as exceptional as the reviews had led me to believe. It didn't quite meet my expectations based on the hype. Overall, it's a decent spot with good service, but the food was a bit of a letdown.

Yelp
Nancy and I had eaten here before, many years ago, but this past weekend we can with a Nepali friend to guide us through the menu. We had a pitcher of an alcoholic beverage called cchyang (sp uncertain) which was mild-tasting but strongly alcoholic. We had three appetizers of various degrees of spice, all of it accompanied by beaten rice, which I am pretty sure we have never had before. Then the main dish was a goat curry served with a solid mass of carbohydrate made of ground buckwheat called dhindo, which our friend assured us was very authentic. The goat curry was flavorful, as were many of the sides that came on the platter with it, but the dhindo I could do without. Much more to explore on the menu. I assume we will be back The place was fairly empty when we arrived at 6 PM but by 7:30 it was packed. Reservation was definitely needed

Yelp
Our group of 10 called ahead to make a reservation for a Friday night at prime dinner time. The staff was more than happy to accommodate our large group. They even called the morning of to confirm our reservation. When we arrived, we were immediately sat by our server. She brought us menus and took our drink orders. Having to come back multiple times for the children's drink orders. She gave us plenty of time to go over the menu and was patient as we asked questions. Our water cups were never empty. Multiple staff members came by to fill our cups as soon as they got low. Which was frequently, as we had been walking around DC all day. We ordered a variety of food. The appetizers consisted of: Bhatmas Sadeko, Pork Sekuwa, Chatamari, and a bread basket. We agreed that all of them were deleicious. But the stand-out star was the Chatamari. For entrees, the kids got chow mein noodles as their tolerance of spice and new foods was pretty low. They received hefty portions that could have easily been shared by two. The Napalese Chicken Curry was the overall winner, followed by butter chicken, Chicken Tikka, and Tikka Masala. This was the best food we've had so far this trip. We will be coming back anytime we are in DC. At the end, our server brought us to go containers. And then split the bill 4 ways for us. (Which was probably a HUGE inconvenience, but they never made it seem that way.) While we were waiting to pay, the owner came by to refill our waters. He was so kind.

Yelp
Came here with some friends and it was sooo delicious!! This is hands down the best Nepali restaurant in DC!!! We got the thali with khassi and the plant based momos and everything was so incredible!!! The owner is so nice and made us feel welcomed and like family!! We will definitely be back!!

Yelp
Decent place, food was good , I think the strength here was to get less of the "indian stuff" and more of the other stuff. The chicken tika was very tomato based ,which some love but the classic indian flavor wasn't there for me! Also, not a lot of chicken. The chicken biryani was an original blend , not the best but interesting enough to say its good, Cozy little spot not a bad place to grab a bite . Service was good .

Yelp
Delicious Nepalese restaurant in Adams Morgan! I love Nepalese food and try to eat it often; this restaurant lived up to the hype for sure. The momos were a great start with a very hearty filling--they did not taste like a bland veggie dumpling in any way! For entrees, we ordered the thali and the butter chicken. Both came with perfectly cooked chicken in gorgeous sauces. Our service was extremely prompt, which was great since we were in a hurry. And the interior was beautiful and pretty empty too. Definitely come check this restaurant out!

Yelp
This was my first foray into Nepalese food. Nepalese is similar to Indian cuisine, which makes sense as the countries share a border. We tried the chicken momo dumplings and the Nepalese style curry. The chicken momo was good, though in my mind I would have wanted those more as an appetizer than a main dish. The curry consisted of a choice of protein and then onions in a tomato-based sauce cooked with roasted cumin, coriander, cilantro, and green onion. Since I selected chicken the dish was $19. I would have liked there to be more ingredients than meat and sauce in the curry, but that's not a restaurant-specific opinion. The curry was made-to-order, and the chicken was well cooked. The space is in a fun area and decorated with interesting art and murals. If you're seated in the alcove, you can sit on decorated pillows.

Yelp
I left feeling full and happy. This place is the real deal. I came here with 2 of my friends and they were both impressed by the food. We ordered 1 appetizer (gobi manchurian) and 2 entrees (paneer masala and veggie jhul momos) which was plenty for us. The vibe of this restaurant is really nice, and service was quick. I usually drink water quickly, and they refilled it every time. There was hand sanitizer on each table, which every restaurant should do. This is how we rated each dish: 4.5 - gobi manchurian. This was crispy and a little spicy, but delicious. Highly recommend! 3 - paneer masala. This was a bit more plain but a classic. I think this was more of a miss because it's a bit sweeter than we would have preferred. They could've added more vegetables in it, it was just plain paneer. If you want another vegetarian entree with a bit more spice and flavor, I would recommend the eggplant dish instead. 4.5 - jhul momos. I'm not vegetarian but I actually prefer the veg momos over the chicken. I believe the jhul momos had cabbage in it, and my friend and I usually don't like cabbage but this was delicious. 4.5 - garlic naan. Bread could've been softer but I liked the garlic coating. It was crispy, just not as fluffy as it could've been. 3.5 - mango lassi. In my opinion, lassi could've been sweeter. Overall, 5/5 restaurant. Second time coming, and hopefully won't be the last.

Yelp
Momo jhol is awesome! The service is great and the food is amazing. There are lots of good options for both vegan and non-vegan.

Yelp
I opted for this place because the place I wanted to go had bad reviews. So I walked a mile farther to go here. I read that this was almost a mix between Indian and Chinese which can only be a plus. I ordered the karahi, pork momo and chicken curry. I chickened out on the goat. Next time. I walked in and was welcomed and given a menu to order take out. They answered all the questions and were very nice. The order took about 20 mins. I couldn't wait to try Nepalese food for the first time. It did not disappoint. Nothing was too spicy. The flavors were great. The momo was tasty with some spicy sauce for dipping. Tender and tasty. The chicken curry was flavorful and the pieces were big squares of white meat. The karahi was lamb and chicken cooked in a very flavorful sauce. Both were sliced thin and soaked up the juice well. The chicken was good but the lamb had almost a buttery taste and the sauce complimented it really well. I would definitely make a trip here again.

Yelp
Lived here for almost 10 years, it's one of the best restaurants in the area. Was shocked by the low score.
google avatar

Preeti J.

Yelp
Loved everything I had here specially when I don't have a spicy palate . Every thing was made so delicious! Specially the soup and salad in the pics. Kids loved chow mein . Momos veggie and achari eggplant were okay Tandoori chicken, Chana masala and were ordered and big favorite too so overall if I m traveling to Washington again. Will definitely try this place again
google avatar

Roxy A.

Yelp
I'm not a huge fan. The location is really nice, but the food is very average. The Momos tasted like trader Joe's' dumplings. The waitstaff was unable to answer any questions, such as what does fried vs. pan friend mean when it comes to Momos? Are fried Momos deep fried? The staff was anxious to take our order and almost pushing us too. We felt that was very unnecessary.
google avatar

Yelp
Fantastic place Everything was absolutely delicious here....from the authentic momos aka: dumplings to anything curry based. We started with some cauliflower dish and it was absolutely delicious. Then we ordered some Nepalese vegetable soup Thupk and meat based and plant based steamed dumplings and they were so amazing. Also got some Nepalese goat meat curry and that also was amazing....wow....everything was great
google avatar

Yelp
Truly delicious! Polite, respectful service and a quiet un-hurried atmosphere. Do not be fooled by the humble facade. This place is a gem. Very fresh food, perfectly seasoned and prepared.
google avatar

Yelp
Loooved the garlic naan and paneer and chicken tikka masalas! Can order dishes in mild, medium, or spicy. Medium was perfect for me. Great atmosphere with decorations and low-light. Perfect for a casual date or out with friends and family. Staff was kind and attentive, filling our water before we ever asked. Would definitely come back again and recommend to others.

Shubha R.

Yelp
Have lived in the area for several years but had never been here before. Our loss. This place was fantastic. It has a very warm cozy atmosphere and they have really recreated the Nepali vibe.Even the music is soothing and relaxing and not some random Bollywood song in the background. I felt like I was eating home cooked food.I'm Indian and appreciate the fact that I was eating what felt like authentic Nepali cuisine.Spice level was perfect and not too Spicy and above all non greasy. We ordered the vegetarian jhol momo and I had a lovely vegetarian thali. Can't remember what they call it in Nepali. Service was 5 star. They just got themselves a customer who will return for the delicious food!
google avatar

Tiffany T.

Yelp
Suuuuuuuch good food and really great service as well!! We got the Korma which was SO flavorful - it was sweet but not overpowering. The pork dumplings were delicious. Samosas for appetizer and each order comes with 2 and each samosa is huge!

H B.

Yelp
They have the best momos anywhere in the DMV. I've called this place to take out orders and had their momos more times than I care to admit. As a Nepali who was born and brought up in Kathmandu, I take my momos very seriously. The staff is very friendly and the ambiance is also very welcoming!

Sonam S.

Yelp
The food maintains its consistency every time we visit, and we've been regulars for years. We adore their Nepali curries and momos. The ambiance is incredibly welcoming, and the prices are fair for Washington, DC. Service can be slow during busy peak hours but staff is always attentive and accommodating.
google avatar

Nidhi P.

Yelp
This is a good cozy place. Staff is very friendly. We had very high hopes but the food is ok. We ordered veg momos, Paneer Chilli (No Gluten-Free) and Buddha Delight (Nut). Momos were very nice but rest of the food was ok. The rotis were very dry. All in all it's a good place.
google avatar

Xin W.

Yelp
The food was good. I'm not an expert on Indian food, but my main critique was that most of the biryanis were oddly very sweet. I assume the taste should be balanced and the first thing that you taste shouldn't be sugar. Other than that, I think the food is good and the ambiance was very welcoming.
google avatar

M H.

Yelp
Order delivery from this place about three times a month - one of my favorites especially as the weather gets cold. I studied abroad in Nepal and India and this feels like the most authentic representation of the cuisine I've had outside Kathmandu. The momo are delicious, the palak paneer and chicken tikka are so flavorful, and it's one of the few places I can find reliably good goat. Deliveries always arrive with the right accoutrements and they don't really gouge on any of the services, near as I can tell.
google avatar

Janelle J.

Yelp
Had no idea this place was above mu street. Really good food and drinks. The dumplings and garlic naan were delicious. Service was a bus slow but very nice.
google avatar

Tanzeela M.

Yelp
Clean, quiet restaurant in Adams Morgan. There's loads to choose from on the menu and I chose the Nepalese style medium spicy curry and it was delicious. I can't wait to visit again when I'm in D.C..
google avatar

Jane B.

Yelp
Delicious food in a quiet and relaxing atmosphere. Very attentive service. Great choice in Adams Morgan.
google avatar

Christian A.

Yelp
A quiet, relaxing experience of Nepalese and Himalayan cuisine within Adam's Morgan. Buddha statues and paintings adorn the walls, and the wooden floor adds a rustic appearance. Incense candles mix with the delicious curries and spices. The mango lassi is very tasty, though in my opinion the portion of the glass is quite small for the price ($5). In fairfax I can get the same amount (if not more) for $2.99. The fried cauliflower is a delicious appetizer served with onions and a sweet chili sauce that packs a kick. Nepalese style curry lamb is rich in flavor and spices and the manchurian styled dumplings are served with a sweet tomato soup style sauce. The customer service was superb, and if you're like me and your phone is perpetually low on battery, you can ask the waiter - they have iPhone chargers!
google avatar

Sudeep U.

Yelp
What a place. Cozy , friendly, and delicious food in the DC area. Ordered some thali , momos, and chyang. It was awesome. Will definitely visit again when I am in the area. They also sell khukuri rum from Nepal. Staff were super friendly, and the ambiance in the restaurant was great. The place is nice and clean. Thank you, Himalayan heritage, for a unforgettable dining experience.
google avatar

Sam S.

Yelp
One of the best Nepalese food places around the DC Try a"Jhol MoMo " you can choose between chicken,Goat and Buff 2nd option is Goat Biryani or Curry You wont regret at all Also don't forget mango lassi The staff are super nice and friendly So professional and polite Oh also If you got lucky you will meet owner. Yelp
I was visiting friends in DC this weekend and this was their go to Indian food. We ordered a bunch of food and split it. We had two order of Samosas, Aloo Kauli, Chana masala, Tarka Daal, Chicken tikka masala, Saag Paneer, Two orders of garlic naan and Two mango lassi and split it between the 4 of us. It was SO good and we had so many leftovers. Their food is very authentic and delicious!!! They staff is extremely kind and always remember my friends. They were excited to see them when we grabbed our take out. Highly recommend this if your looking for some authentic Indian take out.
google avatar

Maria N.

Yelp
We love Indian cuisine and this place didn't disappoint. We had chicken vindaloo and it was very authentic. Be careful because this dish is very spicy. Authentic restaurants such as this will serve it so spicy that most people wouldn't be able to eat it but that is how Vindaloo supposed to be. I asked for medium and I was still on fire. The staff is super friendly and attentive, the restaurant is very clean and neat. Every table has a huge hand sanitizer for your convenience.highly recommend them!
google avatar

Logan F.

Yelp
Beautiful restaurant and the workers were very kind and polite. Not to mention the jhoo momo was amazing (delicious steamed dumplings in a tomato broth with a kick) and reasonably priced for the portion and quality which were both great!! So glad I decided to stop in and try this place out today, it's definitely a gem.

Yelp
I ordered lunch at 12:30pm for delivery, which took about an hour. The restaurant is in Adams Morgan, and I work in downtown DC. The wait was reasonable, given the likely traffic and lunch rush. I ordered veggie pakora, chana masala (with rice), plain naan, and palak chaat to reach the $25 delivery minimum. The pakora were fresh, crispy, well-battered, and delicious. A tangy, tasty orange sauce accompanied it. The palak chaat was unsatisfactory. The spinach was too wet, too salty, and not seasoned evenly. There was also not enough yoghurt on it. It's not a dish to order for delivery evidently. I'd try it again as an in-restaurant order. The chana masala was also not appetizing. The chickpeas were definitely from a can (I know that can-water taste from making botched chana masala a hundred times at home!) and not simmered in the chana masala sauce long enough. The plain naan was dry, minimally buttered, and chalky. I didn't enjoy the taste at all and discarded it because the carbs weren't worth it. The delivery man was friendly and energetic and easy to find. I think my experience would be improved if I dined in and had all the food immediately. Even with a 3 rating, I would return!

Alex D.

Yelp
I've ordered from here several times and have never been disappointed! The chicken momos are a must, and the staff truly listened to any changes or accommodations requested. Overall, 10/10 from me :)

Daniel G.

Yelp
We had a pretty bad experience the first time we ate here but decided to come back to give it a second chance. That was a big mistake. We ordered two glasses of wine to start. The wine had gone rancid (this happened on our first visit too). Obviously the wine bottle had been opened and exposed to air for a LONG time. They took them back and we ordered beer instead (safe option). We ordered two appetizers which arrived 45 minutes later. They were very good. After sitting there for an hour waiting for someone to take our dinner order, we gave up and just asked for the check. They charged us for the expired wine. After another 20 minutes, they corrected it and we finally left. 1 hour and 25 minutes and all we had was rancid wine, a beer, two apps, and no dinner because they never asked. The annoying thing about all of this is that this place serves great food! It's clear they're short-staffed but the staff seems completely clueless about how to operate a restaurant. If you're so short-staffed, then don't seat so many parties at once!
google avatar

Samantha L.

Yelp
Ever since discovering this hidden gem we are totally hooked! We have come at least a few times every month and the service/food is always wonderful. Get the vegetarian mo mo dumplings! They are not spicy but come with a lightly spicy sauce! As someone who is pretty sensitive I have had no issues with the spice levels. Also the naan - sweet mercy. So fresh and delicious!
google avatar

Carla B.

Yelp
Delicious food, good service, and plenty of drink (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) options.

Sujal M.

Yelp
I had high hopes when I visited based on a friend's recommendation, but my excitement quickly turned to disappointment. While the service was commendable, the food was a letdown. The Sukuti was as tough as a bone, the Thakali Thali lacked flavor and authenticity, and the Buff Momo was tasteless. The only saving grace was the somewhat passable Pakuda. The overall dining experience did not justify the cost, and I won't be returning. I advise against ordering the Sukuti or Thakali Thali, and hope others reconsider dining here.

Kevin S.

Yelp
Friendly staff but ordering to go takes forever and the food was alright. I guess it's fine if you eat in but if it's to go go somewhere else
google avatar

Neha A.

Yelp
It's easy to overlook Himalayan Heritage in Adams Morgan from the outside. But, right when you enter you can feel the welcoming atmosphere with the incense and traditional decor. Having been to many Indian restaurants, I was intrigued by the vegetable momos, which were great! The gobi manchurian were very crisp and were seasoned perfectly. But the highlight was the garlic naan, which was fresh off the tandoor. The wait time was a little on the longer side, but it really tasted like everything was freshly made to order! Would recommend this restaurant for great food & catch up with friends :)
google avatar

Rebecca H.

Yelp
Himalayan Heritage is overall very solid. I ordered the vegetable korma to go and enjoyed my meal. I also ordered the veggie samosas which I really enjoyed. It is a bit pricey for an order, but they are pretty big and 2 come in an order. I'd say this place is closer to a 3.5 to be honest.
google avatar

Kathryn L.

Yelp
To Go Review: After the 3rd "Ms. Kathryn" you have to try this & that, I finally decided to join my co-worker's in-office lunch. Before participating, I made a call to inquire how the Salmon Tikka Fillet was prepared & my taste buds started salivating. Yogurt & Coconut Milk are the only "creamy" base used accordingly. The menu is extensive offering Nepalese, in addition to the regular Tandoori, Biryani, Lamb & Poultry dishes. The Vegetarian options are plentiful with 10+ selections. When I called to let them know how amazing the Salmon Tikka was, I mentioned the Mango Chutney was extremely good. I was told it was imported from India...International jelly at its tasty best. Mid day meal was a lasting & savory lunch experience.
google avatar

Rajbir S.

Yelp
We were visiting DC for a two day trip and decided to stop here for lunch. Few of us are huge fans of 'Momos', so we were excited to try them in an authentic Nepalese place. We ordered 3 different kinds of Momos (Khothey, Jhol and one more) and they certainly didn't disappoint. The Khotheys were meaty, flavorful and juicy. Main course was great too, loved the goat curry. I will definitely recommend this place to anyone interested in Nepalese food.
google avatar

Rachel W.

Yelp
Just wanted to update the review, as I got the best takeout I've gotten from any restaurant during COVID from Himalayan Heritage yesterday. The veg momo is always EXCELLENT, and the okra and palak paneer were awesome as well. Good online ordering system, easy safe pickup. Highly recommended!
google avatar

Grace M.

Yelp
This is a little gem in Adams Morgan. The restaurant has a wonderful ambiance created by the beautiful artwork, rich fabrics, fresh flowers and candles. The meal was delicious and authentic. We got chicken momo, daal soup, butter chicken and garlic naan. Everything was outstanding. I highly recommend!
google avatar

Kamil A.

Yelp
I live in the area and walk by this place all the time and had always planned to try it. One day we decided to venture in and I'm so glad I did. I wasn't quite sure what Himalayan cuisine consisted of but I was surprised to see so many familiar items on the menu. I ended up going with the butter chicken which is served with rice. Let Me just say that it was so good. The chicken was cooked well and the sauce was flavorful. The interior lighting is a bit dim but it creates a nice little vibe especially if you're trying to chill out a bit. The service was good and I plan to go back and explore the Menu in the near future

Alycia P.

Yelp
My friends and I stopped in for dinner, and the food was amazing! I ordered the lamb tandoori and it was exactly what I had a taste for. Super tender and delicious! I would definitely go back.

Yelp
I went to Himalayan Heritage during COVID and I was impressed. They were practicing cleanliness and the place looked safe and they clearly followed all the guidelines. The management made sure to be extremely friendly and took care of us well. I have eaten many momo's from native Nepali's before and this has by far been the best momo's I have had yet. if you ever go there, they're a must try! Their seasonings and dipping sauces were great. I look forward to visiting soon!

Yelp

Bison momos was my favorite diah of all. However, I would refrain anyone from ordering the mango lassi. I only took one sip from it and asked to return it as it was the most disgusting and most sour drink I've ever had. Despite that, I would return just for the bison momos.
