I never really venture out in the direction of Smyrna, as I live ITP and usually go towards Buford Hwy when I go OTP. But I happened to be in that area the other night and had dinner with my usual dinner buddy and some family, and boy do I regret not having tried Himalayan Kitchen sooner.
This restaurant is everything I want (good food made to order with passion) without any pretense or unnecessary frills. Some of the decor is odd (the mannequin with soulless eyes dressed in traditional clothing) and some is beautiful (the panels showing the striking landscape of the Himalayas) but the atmosphere overall is cozy and welcoming.
If you come here, you have to try the momos. I am personally partial to steamed varieties, but they have other options, too. We tried the steamed beef momos and the steamed veggie momos. Each comes on a plate of 8, accompanied by pickled vegetables and some sort of chili sauce for dipping. If their other dishes weren't so good, I would just stuff myself on momos. The beef momos are savory, really brings out the flavor of the beef, intensely juicy. The momo skins are not paper thin like you would see in a Chinese dumpling, yet they are not overly thick and I think they need to be a little thick to complement the large amount of filling and flavor on the inside. The pickled vegetables are not overly sour but do cut the richness nicely. The chili sauce I wish I could buy by the bottle because it is THE perfect dipping sauce. I did not find it overly spicy but my dinner buddies were a bit spiced, so proceed with caution.
The veggie momos were clearly made by someone who appreciates vegetarianism and cares about making veggie options just as good as omnivorous options. The wrapping for these is actually green, and the stuffing comprises finely chopped veggies, tofu, and I think mushrooms, all well seasoned and not watery at all like some veggie dumpling fillings can be.
DO NOT SKIP THE MOMOS under any circumstances.
At our table, we tried the chicken thukpa, veggie thukpa, beef chow mein, and the house special chow mein. The thukpa broth is incredible, and I finished almost all of it. The noodles remain chewy in the hot broth, and there are plenty of veggies and flavorful chicken in this super satisfying bowl. I heard rave reviews for the veggie thukpa. The chow mein has lots of wok hey, the noodles are nice and chewy, and they are generous with the toppings. Portions are generous but not scary.
Because they make everything to order, food does not come out super quickly, but the wait times are definitely reasonable. I would come out to Smyrna just for this place.
