Best Restaurants in San Diego’s Point Loma Neighborhood | Eater San Diego

"Hungry locals head to Himalayan Palace for Indian, Nepalese, and Tibetan food — especially for the lunchtime special on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Bouncy red leather booths line the green-and-red-painted walls under an abstract patterned ceiling and a mix of eclectic light fixtures. The chicken korma with a side of garlic naan is a reliable winner for dine-in or takeout, as well as the samosas, mango lassi, and sweet, doughy, and syrupy gulab jamun for dessert." - Keri Bridgwater

Google
Delicious food and friendly staff! The mango lassi was one of the best I've ever tasted. The lunch special is a bargain, with generous portions and a chance to taste 2 entrees, naan, rice, and a dessert. Highly recommend!

Google
We ordered the chicken biryani, vegetable samosa, momos, chicken tikka masala, and butter chicken. The food was delicious except for the butter chicken. The food came out quickly and hot. My only complaint is that the server keeps returning to our table and asking us if we are done with some of our dishes. I felt like he was trying to hurry us up a little bit.

Google
Indian food that is both tasty and reasonably priced! I enjoy going on culinary adventures and sampling cuisine from various cultures whenever I travel. I won't lie to you all...my Latino butt doesn't recall what I ordered, but I did take some pictures and understood some of the ingredients. Lentil Soup - was free and actually good! Taj (beer) - 1st time having it, definitely not the last! Appetizer - It featured both a savory and a sweet sauce, and it gave me some queso fresco vibes. Definitely enjoyable to me, and it was fantastic! Lunch Special - all I remember is that it was very very good! Overall, it was a fantastic experience! Although it's only nitpicking, the atmosphere could use some music, and the server could have done a better job of explaining the cuisine. Still, the waiter was friendly and attentive. Will I return? Yes... I will definitely be back! Now it's time to nap away this big belly 😂

Google
i have been here many many times since 2020, they have changed ownership, staff and recipes at least once or twice. I can say the sag paneer is good (sometimes it’s chunky sometimes it’s creamy and pureed), veggie momos and garlic naan, always nice service

Google
Exceptional Experience at Himalayan Palace Restaurant ! We ordered dinner over the phone, and the staff member taking our order was incredibly warm and welcoming. The menu was easy to navigate, and the suggestions were spot on. We opted for tandoori chicken and butter naan, but the service person surprised us with complimentary rice and dhal, thinking we might not have enough for dinner. What a lovely gesture! The food was mild and delicious, just as we requested. My kids loved it! The restaurant itself was pleasant and comfortable. This was our first visit, but we'll definitely return whenever we're in San Diego. Highly recommended for lunch or dinner!

Google
Always enjoyable. It is one of the few restaurants around that can honestly be described as "reasonably priced." Yet the portions are more than generous. I almost always end up packing a part of my meal to take home. We've tried a number of things. Lamb curry. Chicken tandoori. Tikka masala. Biryani. Everything is consistently flavorful and well seasoned. Their naan is probably my favorite in the city.

Google
Tried this place out for the first time and was extremely surprised by the service, and food. Every Indian restaurant I’ve been to has different tasting Curries, Tikka Masala, etc. And this spot was no exclusion, the Tikka Masala is a big creamier then most I’ve had but I thoroughly enjoyed this. The samosas with sauces were excellent! I got the lunch special, which I will definitely come back for. Overall good experience.

Google
BEST INDIAN FOOD IN SAN DIEGO! Started off with Samosas which were perfect. Absolutely use both the sauces. They’re very complex flavors. The service was insanely fast. The only other time I’ve experienced service like this was in Singapore they earned that tip! The Chicken Tikka and Butter Chicken are delicious. Paired with rice and some optional garlic naan and you cant go wrong here. This is some of the best flavor I’ve ever gotten in these dishes. The chicken tikka had a great cardamom/ clove flavor. The butter chicken was very rich. They are using some great ingredients to make both the curries which are a similar base but tasted quite different to me. Overall this is my new go to here in San Diego. Its also insanely affordable. We paid right at 55$ for two people. You’ve got to give them a shot.

Yelp
I've been wanting to try this restaurant after a friend raved about the food. I made reservation through Yelp. It was a Saturday evening but there was only a few people and after two hours we were the only people in the restaurant; we left close to 8:00 PM. However, I did see several to-go dinners on a table ready to be picked up. We were first served by a gentleman who really didn't speak much. He started us with soup, but didn't say that it was complementary or explained the type of soup. We found out it was a lentil soup and was quite good. He Immediately tried to take our order, but we weren't ready yet. We did order an appetizer and drinks and then asked him to come back later because he stood there waiting on us. He did give us a few recommendations when I asked. He was nice, but seemed timid. We started off with the Vegetable Samosa and it was very delicious and one of the best i've eaten. When we were ready, a female server took our order. I asked for recommendations again, and she pretty much gave the same one that the male server gave us however, she was more descriptive and even showed us photos at the back of the menu that we missed. I ordered the Lamb Curry with spice level 4 out of 10 with her help. The curry had just enough heat. for me and it was a delicious dish. My friend ordered the Chicken Korma which the server recommended for her, with the spice level of 2 but she said she probably could've gone up one level. Our server, also recommended the Garlic Cilantro Naan. I thought the naan was tasty but just a bit over done. I did try the Chicken Korma which was very creamy and on the sweeter side, but it too was delicious. Overall, the food was delicious, restaurant was clean, the servers were nice and I would come back and try more dishes and naan.It was a very quiet evening for Saturday. Oh, and when we asked for to-go containers, I liked how she had a separate one for rice, curry, and foil for the naan.

Yelp
I only come here for the lunch special combination as pictured. I always eat alone and don't have anyone to share dishes with. In the lunch special plate I could have two meat choices and make two meals out of the plate. The server brought half a cup of yellow lentil soup. When I complained about why doesn't she fill the cup to the top? It was a suggestion. She said it was " complimentary" . She asked me if I want more and implied that it would cost me to have a cup of soup filled to the top, versus complementary half a cup. Later on she just brought me a full cup of soup and said there would no charge. I think it was because she thought I might write a bad review about half a cup of soup, which I was already composing. The food that was brought to me was freshly made and very very hot in temperature. I was the only one in the restaurant for the lunch. I guess I would come here again just to have two selections off of the choices for the lunch. They were pretty tasty. Used to be they had a coupon for lunch $10. But now with all the inflation it's $13.95. With tax and tips $17. There is outdoor seating. I like it that parking is no problem here. Big spacious lot for all the businesses here, sharing with Phil's BBQ.

Yelp
This was easily the best Indian food I've had in a LONG time. The service was incredible, they were attentive and friendly. The garlic cilantro naan was delicious and paired beautifully with the main dishes. We ordered butter chicken which was rich and robust with flavor - probably the most delicious butter chicken I've had. The lamb curry was complex, flavorful and savory. I cannot wait to go back! The desire was traditional and quaint. Incredibly pleased with the whole dining experience. (I also loved the 7 dollar glasses of house wine)

Yelp
This place was fantastic. The indoor decor represents a lot of the culture of Nepal. Playing on a loop on monitors were videos of the landscapes and local towns of Nepal, including Kathmandu. Each booth has its own theme/flavor which makes it even more interesting. Food is delicious. Spicy level is perfect (waiter asked multiple times if we really wanted 8/10 for spicy because nobody ever asks for that kind of heat). Chicken tikka masala was the best. They have some good lunch specials which allows you to sample a variety of different dishes for about $13. Will definitely visit again and I recommend this place to anyone who loves the Asian culture and delicious authentic food!

Sameer N.

Yelp
Good food, hats off to the chef/staff. Goat curry was rich/spicy, and with butter naan just hit the spot. We also ordered daal/rice for our sick 5 year old and they delivered it well. Less spice, made specifically to fit her liking etc. I wish they offered more Nepalese food choices. 100% will come back again.
google avatar

Reilly E.

Yelp
Great food after a long hike! We had tandoori salmon, sag panner and okra. Thanks Mandal for being a great server!
google avatar

Jacob N.

Yelp
Delicious food in a quiet and comfortable setting. Himalayan Palace offers a wonderful lunch special where you can pick two types of curry, with soup, naan and rice pudding for 13.95. A nice treat for those with a bit of a craving for Indian food at lunch.

Yelp
I was looking for a restaurant with a lunch special and came across himalayan palace and I'm so glad I did! the special was a great deal and let me try a few different dishes. they were all really good and the service was great too.

Yelp
I swear I've been here before, but never reviewed this joint. Ordered an Indian beer to start, and then 3 main dishes, which came with rice or naan. Food was great, the chicken tikka masala was my favorite, but the korma and curry were good as well. Ambiance is strip mall supper club, service was prompt and helpful, and prices were slightly above portion size... good joint, I'll be back!

Koby S.

Yelp
Himalayan Palace is hands down one of our favorite spots--we come here almost every week! The food is consistently flavorful and comforting, and the service is always warm and welcoming. Mandal and Laxmi are especially kind and attentive, and they always make us feel right at home. We highly recommend the saag paneer and the tikka masala lunch special, but honestly, everything we've tried has been delicious. A true gem.

Clare P.

Yelp
The food and service was absolutely top notch everything tasted delicious-Our server Mandal and Laxi were amazing and kind shout out to them both!! Thanks guys for making our experiences 5 stars plus !!!
google avatar

Victoria V.

Yelp
I loved this restaurant! The food was so good (including the delicious mango lassi). The service was outstanding with speed and kindness. The ambiance is fun as there are pictures of the Himalayas throughout. We will definitely be back!

Raymond M.

Yelp
This lunch special is a lot of food for a great price! Come with two entrees, vegetable, rice pudding , rice, naan bread and lentil soup. The food was delicious and the staff was very nice. Was served by Mandal today will definitely be back for more

Carl S.

Yelp
I've eaten at this place a couple different times and it's just delicious and clean and as good as any Indian restaurant in San Diego... I think LA and New York and Calgary and San Francisco are tough to beat but for San Diego this might be the front runner
google avatar

Yelp
Went in for an early dinner. I believe we were the only customers in the restaurant when we arrived. The food was good, but the service was super slow and they forgot part of what we ordered. The servers never came back to check on us and we had to wait quite awhile to flag one down.
google avatar

Jack W.

Yelp
LOVE!!!!!!!!! Best paneer masala I have had in San Diego. Also excellent service and really great atmosphere for a cozy dinner out. Highly recommend to all! Love you guys. Xo

Nacio O.

Yelp
This place is amazing! We've been here 3 or 4 times and each time we wonder why we don't come more often. Last night we ordered mango chicken and wooow it's a winner ! Every new dish we try we're impressed. The waitress/waiters are all super nice and helpful. Spice level is no joke so if you like it hot be prepared to sweat ! Love this place .
google avatar

Jake H.

Yelp
This place is the best Nepalese / Indian food in San Diego hands down. I have tried many things here and all of them have been delicious. The two servers offer great service and provide an excellent environment to enjoy authentic home made cuisine, especially Mandal he is always in a good mood and takes excellent care of me. Tiki masala is sooo good and curry chicken and daal rice pudding mango lassi everything is amazing. I love this place!
google avatar

Ed S.

Yelp
Disappointing in several ways: Saag Paneer was bland and unseasoned (except heat), Chicken Biryani had a number of small bone pieces in it so I gave up as I didn't want to choke. Raita was too sweet. Mango lassi was good. Did takeout so no idea about service.
google avatar

Tom S.

Yelp
Comfort food for a cold, drizzly afternoon! Stopped by and had the lunch special, which included a small cup of lentil soup, and a platter featuring some pickled vegetables, 2 entrees, rice, naan, and some rice pudding. They didn't ask on this visit how spicy I wanted the food, but I'm sure I could have requested it to be more spicy. For me, the chicken curry was perfectly spiced, but the chicken vindaloo could have used a bit more heat. Nevertheless, everything was tasty, and the portions appropriate for lunch. I'm not a big eater, so I left with a take-home container with almost half of the meal left.
google avatar

Jason D.

Yelp
service is excellent thanks to Mandal for making me feel welcome. The food is amazing and served very quickly. I will come back for sure.
google avatar

Nancy W.

Yelp
I came here for lunch. The food is fresh and delicious! The service is very good also. I had the non vegetarian lunch special and my husband had the vegetarian lunch. Both were fantastic! Great price!!
google avatar

Molly G.

Yelp
This has been my go to spot for Indian food for the past few months. Everything I've tried so far is delicious! I love the chicken masala, it is so creamy and packed with flavor. I live for the naan and will sometimes order two just to have more leftovers. Great place, definitely try it and I'm sure it'll become one of your go tos too!
google avatar

Mara M.

Yelp
Yum!!! Very solid food here. We ordered takeout and everything was prepared by staff and ready on time, restaurant looked cute and would eat in another time. The garlic naan, chili chicken, chicken tikka masala and momos were all really good! Would definitely recommend and come back!

Annie N.

Yelp
The food is so incredibly fresh and tastes amazing. The ambiance is nice too, they have nice decorations there. The restaurant was very clean. Their lunch special is a perfect way to try multiple items. I will be back soon.

Romy V.

Yelp
Favorite restaurant in San Diego! Come here every single week for the lunch special. Love the saag paneer and the navaratna korma. Also love the vegetable pakora. The servers Laxmi and Mendal are the best! Highly recommended!

Yelp
Highlights: friendly service and absolutely delicious food We visited around 8 PM or so on New Year's Eve and we had a wonderful experience. Our server, Ali I believe was his name, was awesome and super friendly. Our eyes were definitely bigger than our stomachs - we ordered the chicken tikka masala with butter naan, the chicken vindaloo with garlic naan, and the chicken momo dumplings. I am drooling as I am typing this. They were all so incredibly delicious - I was frustrated I couldn't eat it faster because it was too hot (temperature wise - fresh out the oven/stove!) We tried to finish it all in one serving but we had quite a bit of leftovers... best leftovers ever the following night! I wish we had ordered even more so that we'd have more days of leftovers :) Highly recommend!
google avatar

Eunice H.

Yelp
Best place to get your Himalayan/Nepalese food fix! We were blown away by how delicious everything was here! We ordered 1) chicken tikka masala- perfectly balanced in its flavors with such a savory, rich base of sauce. We used the naan to soak up the sauce. 2) garlic cilantro naan- amazing. Crispy on the edges, but chewy on the insides. A must get with your meal 3) mixed tandoori- this dish came out sizzling with an assortment of lamb, salmon, chicken atop grilled vegetables. Absolutely loved the marinade on the meat and the veggies soaked up all that yummy flavor. 4) mango lassi- so creamy, smooth, and the mango really popped through the yogurt base. Perfect to wash down the spicy food, a true palate cleanser. 5) 911 hot sauce- loved this bright, punchy, spicy sauce- I added it to everything and it definitely burns in the best way possible! The restaurant itself is super clean and warm with a friendly, helpful staff. Free parking with plenty of available spots!

Yelp
Chicken Momo, Butter Chicken, Butter Naan This was excellent! The butter chicken was flavorful and filling, the chicken super tender. The Naan was classic and great. The chicken momo I quite enjoyed but it didn't amaze me; just a solid dish. I didn't think the sauce that came with the chicken momo was very flavorful, so I dipped the chicken momos in my Butter Chicken sauce instead, and that tasted great.
google avatar

Curt T.

Yelp
This place was pretty good. The butter chicken sauce was very flavorful and creamy. The paneer chili perfectly spicy. I did add more spice to it but was very delicious. The mango lassi drink that was free in check in was delicious although sweet and sugary. The naan bread was very good. Is be back
google avatar

Saliha M.

Yelp
The chickpeas were very greasy and the to go box was cracked so the bag was leaking. I was disappointed in the pakoray because it was cabbage and that was not stayed. Traditional pakoray are fried dough pieces of chickpeas flour and potato pieces chopped. It was burnt. The biryani was very small, almost half the amount that other restaurants give us, but the amount of meat was 5 small pieces of lamb. There was no chutney given. As an Indian girl I would never eat from here again. Did not taste authentic. The spices were overloaded and didn't flow smoothly.
google avatar

Myphuong L.

Yelp
We came on Christmas Day observed. It wasn't our first choice. It was the only one opened after checking out three other locations in the area. So we're thankful that this place opened and the food was pretty good. Just wished their spice level matched their hotness. -Vegetable momo (10 for $10.95) - steamed dumplings served with Himalayan sauce. This sauce is so good! -Vegetable samosa (2 for $6.95) - large deep fried puff pastry with tamarind. -Vegetable pakora ($5.95) - deep fried potatoes, spinach, vegetables served with mint chutney. -Navaratma korma ($15.95) - vegetable korma. Really good and creamy spices. -Veg Thali (($18.95) - This came with a plate of everything even dessert. Rice, tarka daal which is a lentil curry, mixed vegetable curry, raita which is like a yogurt mix as a salad or a dip, and pudding for dessert. Also dal soup. Overall, food was great and so was service except the veg thali came with butter naan and we never received it. We had ordered cilantro garlic naan and didn't noticed until I was boxing the left overs. They no longer serve All You Can Eat.

Yelp
Ridiculously tasty and fresh! Great service and everything came out hot. Going to add this to our favorites!

Yelp
Love this place! My family and I enjoy visiting several of the locations. No matter which one we go to we're greeted as if we're family. The food is delicious and the service is outstanding.

Calina N.

Yelp
Really amazing Indian food!! It is in the same plaza as Phils BBQ near the sports arena. I honestly don't remember what I ordered but everything I had here was delicious! I highly recommend their Chicken Tandoori. It came out on a hot sizzling plate which was amazing and something I have never seen before. The service was also amazing, they kept checking on us to see if we were enjoying the food. There is an outdoor patio and indoor dining.
google avatar

Dennis W.

Yelp
Great customer service! The food is always fresh and the prices are reasonable, you have to try the butter, chicken and the samosas

Yelp
Food: 4.5/5 - #9 Coconut Shrimp ($8.95)-- loved the Korma sauce and coconut flakes. They enhanced the sweet flavor of the shrimp. - #27 Saag Paneer ($11.95)-- piping hot and full of aromatic spices. - #101 Goat Curry ($15.95)-- serve with Pulao Rice or Butter Naan with Himalayan herbs & spices. Creamy delicious! We ordered with rice and side order of Garlic Naan. - #61 Lamb Tikka Masala ($15.95)-- full of flavorful spices. - Blue Moon ($3.95)-- citrusy. My husband and son shared a bottle. They enjoyed it! - #41 Garlic Cilantro Naan ($2.95)-- yum! - #40 Butter Naan ($2.45)-- 2 orders to go to enjoy with leftovers. - Hot Sauce ($1.95)-- must have if you like your food really spicy like we do. Yelp
This place is A-MAAAAAZING!! We ordered the Butter Chicken, Tika Masala, Tandoori Lamb, Garlic Cheese Naan, Garlic Naan and a milk ball desert.... All of it was incredible!!! The service was also very personable and sweet!! This is now our family spot for Indian and Nepalese food
google avatar

Ryan B.

Yelp
Maybe the best chicken Tikka masala I've ever had! Crazy depth of flavor we also had the goat curry and lamb vindaloo which were great. The garlic naan was excellent and our waiter told us a funny story about a place in Nepal. It was nice and quiet and the food was great. I'll be back for that tikka masala again very soon!

Ivy K.

Yelp
Good food, good ambiance! Great Value for a lunch special that includes soup, 2 entrees, pickle, rice and dessert!
google avatar

Wendy G.

Yelp
Update: Himalayan Palace is rocking takeout during the pandemic! Every time I order, each item is carefully packaged to preserve temp & texture, arrives to my home still fresh & infused with nuanced, homemade flavors. Simple white rice or pillowy, savory naan? Your choice as a side to complement each main. Just because, here's a special shout out to my favorite dish: Ode to Navaratna Korma: Subtle curry, veg & golden raisin stream, Into one bowl, a true delight, To me did seem Aromatic spices took flight And kissed a soft cloud of coconut cream.

Sam S.

Yelp
This restaurant has great food! The staff was very friendly and knowledgeable . Food was so good and the prices were reasonable. It's clean and loved the music as well. Highly recommend it.
google avatar

Bella M.

Yelp
This place was absolutely delicious. We got the butter chicken, chicken tikka masala, mango lassi, veggie samosas, and garlic naan. It was absolutely awesome. I would go back here in a heartbeat.
google avatar

Bianca M.

Yelp
I've been here 3 times in the last 5 weeks, I'm obsessed! The saag aloo and veggie korma are some of my favorite dishes. Their cilantro naan is fire! Also, the prices are low compared to other similar restaurants.

Tara J.

Yelp
Love the vegetarian specials this place has to offer! We are not vegetarian, but we loved the Navaratna Korma and ordered it two nights in a row! I specifically love how the crunch of the cashews adds to the texture in this one! There was a good variety of veggies in it and the flavor was amazing! We also had the vegetable samosas and chicken tikka masala both nights, loved them both. The Baigan Bharta and the Saag Paneer were also delicious! Can't go wrong with a few mango lassi's on top of that. I usually love sweet naan with dishes like these, but I'm not sure I love theirs. There is a red fruit in it that sort of takes over. Wish the sweet naan was a little heavier on the coconut and lighter on whatever fruit that was (made me think of maraschino cherries - the bright red ones, not the delicious dark red ones). Overall, the food was delicious! We ordered for delivery and will order from Himalayan Palace every time we pet sit our friend's dogs - they live closer to this restaurant than we do. I'm excited to try more of the vegetarian options, they have so many and they're all so good!

Yelp
I did not have a good experience at this restaurant. I went for lunch and pretty much everything was in the same heavy tomato type sauce. It was hard to tell one dish from another. It appeared things had been reheated. I ordered two samosas and the crust was so overdone and so overly crisp. The contents had basically no taste. All in all both my friends and I were very unhappy with the entire meal and would not return.
