The Best Restaurants In The South Loop - Chicago - The Infatuation

"Himalayan is a small, casual spot with a menu highlighting food from Nepal and North India. There’s plenty to choose from, including big and flaky samosas packed with spicy potato filling, and some of the best biryani in the city outside of Devon. Leftovers are inevitable, so Himalayan is a great weeknight option. And since most of their business is takeout, there’s almost always seating available in the low-key space." - veda kilaru, adrian kane, john ringor

I truly don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, but I do want to share our experience honestly. My husband and I ordered: Chilli Paneer Murg Masala Steamed Chicken Momos Unfortunately, the food didn’t meet our expectations. The chilli paneer felt like raw paneer simply mixed in a paste, and the murg masala was overwhelmingly colored with orange dye without much flavor. The steamed momos were decent, though. I hope the feedback is taken in the right spirit — we’d love to see the place thrive with a few improvements!

Google
The food at Himalayan Restaurant looked great, and some dishes like the naans, paneer, and chicken curry were quite good. However, there were a few drawbacks — the tandoori had too much food coloring, and the chicken was stretchy and not very tender. Service was just okay, nothing remarkable. Overall, it was an average experience with a mix of hits and misses.

Asmita Sadul

Google
Disappointed and won’t be returning. Ordered chicken chilli momos (very average), paneer chilli (barely had any paneer—you could count the pieces on two hands), and the Himalayan Mixed Tandoori Grill, which was an utter disaster. The tandoori chicken was undercooked and pink inside—not just red from seasoning but genuinely undercooked. The platter claimed to have lamb and chicken kebabs, but we literally got half a piece of each—$24 for scraps? Also, their tipping system doesn’t allow custom tips—only preset options, which is frustrating and feels pushy. Really bad experience overall. Definitely not worth the money or the hype.

Google
It's been a while since I had Momos. And this restaurant delivered. The taste was as authentic as you can get outside of Katmandu, Calcutta, Darjeeling or Gangtok. Some elements in service can be improved. Like having chopsticks to pick and eat the momos instead of fork or even ask if the customer needs any drink besides water.

Google
I loved this place! The food was Excellent. The service was great! This is my new favorite Indian cuisine restaurant. The atmosphere is more of a lunch dinner/ quick bite type of place but you can make a date night out of it and byob.

Google
We had a little party and ordered the chicken Tikka masala , biryani and a few other things and it all was SO DELICIOUS!! Please excuse my presentation on the plate 😆 I will 💯 go back and dine in and support this place. Loved it!!!

Google
chicken biriyani tastes so good and portion is great (don’t order spicy if you cannot handle the heat) also recommend the cold dessert, cheese ball with milk, so good

Came here for lunch after arriving in Chicago from Dallas. The food is alright, I had the chicken korma and a can of iced tea. Around $22. Kind of pricey for that.

Yelp
Some of the best Nepali/Indian food we've had! As a group of 5, we split the Family Meal Deal and added an extra bread basket. The onion naan was a surprise hit, we were delighted to learn we love it since we usually order garlic! We also ordered some Steamed Chicken Momos which were cooked perfectly and super juicy inside! We all had different favorites and none of the items went unnoticed. Even the sauces for the Cocktail Samosas and for the momos were flavorful! The staff were attentive, quick, and helpful. We were seated immediately, ordered within minutes, and were able to split our bill equally 5 ways with ease! Would recommend again for fast, casual dinner with no reservation needed.

Yelp
I must say I am an Indian food junkie and there is almost no Indian food that I don't like. That being said... I finally found a place that was actually able to not do it right. At all. The only saving grace of this place was the friendly people at the register. It was $18 for a small container of chicken tikka masala which was entirely tasteless and contained the amount of meat of a medium sized chicken breast at best. The veggie korma kind of tastes like broccoli cheddar soup. There are a few good/great Indian restaurants within walking distance in this area that far surpass the food from this place that have tastier food, comparable prices and larger portion sizes.

Yelp
Himilayan Restaurant was very convenient to where I was staying. Besides being convenient, I and other friends who dined there said it was never difficult to be seated, and all enjoyed their meals. While I did not come there for lunch, I understand it may have a buffet, though the selections will be more Indian than Himilayan. We of course had a large a variety of momo's as we could, all steamed and with the a dipping sauce. We ordered a variety of chicken, lamb, and vegetarian dishes, all of which were delicious. Their palak paneer is not as green, so obviously less spinach, perhaps a Himilayan take? The garlic naan was some of the best I've ever had, thin and crispy and perfectly seasoned. Service is very friendly, everything came out quickly. This became a destination for many of my friends in town with me.

Yelp
This restaurant really is one of the best Indian food places I've had in my life so far. It's amazing that it is tucked away in this semi-hidden, half-urban college campus of Columbia! The service is quick, quick and nice. Place is always clean. Kiran is in charge and generous w/ students with a 10% discount (ID needed)! They made my picky sister change your mind about Indian food and love it! Love the tikka massala, lassi, and new mo-mos for me! I have to try more dishes but great so far! Naan !

Audrey W.

Yelp
Got take out from this restaurant and absolutely loved it! The naan was huge and delicious, the samosas were great, and the vegetable momo soup was just amazing. The mango lassi was perfect, too. We didn't dine in but the atmosphere seemed nice and the people working were quick and helpful.

Yelp
Chicago, IL - My boss is a vegetarian so needed to find a great place close to our conference for a good meal. This un-fancy restaurant fit the bill perfectly. Upon entering, we were immediately greeted by the scent of delicious food and our very kind and efficient waitress. She immediately brought a flask of cold water and the menus. So many great choices! I went with the palak paneer. It came out hot and fresh and with a mild spice perfect for my non-spicy loving taste buds. Note that you can request your level of spicy-ness. The rice was also fresh and steamy. We noted the restaurant was quite busy so we were glad to get a comfortable table with a bench near the wall. I would definitely return when in the area.
google avatar

Yelp
Portions were big enough for leftovers and everything was so tasty! Had mild & medium both you could tell the difference, I bet the 2 hotter ones would be great for spice lovers. Chill spot with music, quick nice service. Easy to split the check!

Yelp
Ordered chicken tikka masala for delivery. The sauce looked promising but was surprisingly bland, just didn't have that bold, layered flavor you hope for. The chicken was okay, not the worst, but a little dry inside and not especially tender. Overall, it was edible but underwhelming. With so many options nearby, I don't think I'd order from here again.
google avatar

Yelp
We had the Non-Vegetarian Meal For Two , Served with Half Tandori Chicken, Two Entrees, One Rice, and One Butter Naan we chose the tiki masala and chicken Makani. We both loved the food. My husband said it his new favorite restaurant. Ambience is it much but it did appear to be clean. The server was wonderful. I didn't catch your name.

Yelp
We stopped in for lunch recently, as we'd both had the restaurant bookmarked for quite awhile. Well worth the visit, and a new place on the regular lunch rotation. The staff was friendly, polite and helpful, and the place, while humble, is clean and agreeably comfortable. We decided to share some momos, as we both really like them, so ordered the chicken chili. They arrived quickly to the table and were delicious; smaller than others I've had at other restaurants, but packed with filling and delightfully spicy, with bell peppers and onions tossed in the tangy sauce. Those were filling enough that we chose to share an entree, and opted for the vegetable jalfrezi. This dish was very tasty, with a noticeable heat level (they do ask, so it's up to you), and a mix of fresh and good quality frozen vegetables. Overall, very good North Indian/Nepalese food in an inviting space. I'll return for more.

Yelp
This restaurant was located just a few blocks from our hotel in Chicago's South Loop. It's a family style place that serves Indian and Nepalese food. Upon entering, we saw many Indians customers eating. Always a good sign. This place is very casual. We had the chicken tikka masala, lamb vindaloon, Chana masala, and the bread basket. It comes with rice. Everything was amazingly delicious. Be careful about the spice level, as this place is authentic. Level 1 is very very spicy. They adjust the level of spiciness to your personal preference. Overall, I highly recommend this place when you're in Downtown Chicago. Nothing fancy, just great authentic home style cooking.

Yelp
** Uber eats ** We have some go to favorites that we always try at every new Indian place. This spot did not disappoint! Our picks: Lamb vindaloo Chicken tikka masala Samosas Naan Lots of rice. So tasty. Everything was packaged with care and delivered hot and ready to eat. I can't wait to eat this again soon.

Yelp
What started a routine Uber Eats pickup from work soon turned... FOR THE BEST. As a white boy (with a lil habanero), it's procedure tht I went for the slightly spicy Tikki Marsala. "Is even that too spicy?" I wondered. The fellas in there were chill as f**k which was tight. When I tell you this spicy tikki marsala tasted like it was cooked by the blessed Vishnu himself, flown on the wings of a Bengal tiger, and delivered right here to the South Loop, I f**king mean it. Just what I needed after a long day of interning!!! Great stuff.

Yelp
I was in the area, and I've been meaning to check out Himalayan Restaurant. Looking online, I saw they had a lunch special including two entrees, dessert, rice, and naan. When I entered, the restaurant was very clean and about a third full- it's a small storefront with cute art on the walls. I sat down and was immediately helped, with a lunch special menu placed on my table. I noticed that at the restaurant, rather than a dessert, the lunch special was served with samosas- which I didn't mind. The server brought the entire pitcher of water to my table, which was nice, and my food quickly arrived; chana masala and chicken tikka masala. It was served on a cute metal platter. To start with the good- the rice was delicious, hot, and fresh, the naan was also very fresh and flavorful, and the samosas were flakey and nicely spiced. The chana masala was also very flavorful, and nothing was too spicy- I'm certain one could ask for some spice, I have a low tolerance and didn't mind. Unfortunately, while it was tender, the chicken tikka masala had an odd, greasy flavor, and only three chunks of chicken. I didn't love it- and in the future, I'd try a different chicken dish or order veggie. For 12.99, I wish they had a larger selection of meat dishes for the lunch special, as I would've loved a lamb or fish curry. While the naan was tasty, it had a cheap butter flavor which gave it an off putting smell and taste. Ultimately, this was a clean restaurant with a decently priced lunch special, and the vegetarian options were delicious. The service was quick and efficient, and I'd absolutely recommend it if you're in the loop.

Yelp
We ordered this place again for dinner last night and it was amazing. The curry vegetables are officially now my favorite!!!!

Sheyenne H.

Yelp
Ordered for the first time, got mutton momo and vegetable pakora. Both are fantastic. I will definitely go back to get the same things and will not hesitate to try others on the menu as well.

Yelp
Found this place to be a great value! I saw it was rated as one of the best places close to the auditorium theatre for dinner. My only regret is that my stomach wasn't bigger. Portions are huge. Highly recommend the chicken Tikka and Naan. Next time I'll go back with a bigger group so we can try more things. My husband appreciated the spiciness of the vindaloo. No reservations needed and is byob. Great for a pre-theatre bite. The staff is great and the food is delicious!
google avatar

Yelp
I live in the area and decided to try out this nepalese restaurant because i was craving momos! Spoiler alert- I was not disappointed! I ordered the Chilli momos from here and they were exquisite to say the least! Perfectly spiced and cooked. I walked in here and placed an order to go and was told it would take 20 mins to prepare my order but the service was much faster (probably took 10 mins). There's plenty of seating inside so one can most definitely enjoy their meal at the restaurant as well. Overall, I'm so glad I decided to walk into this establishment because now I have a permanent momo place!
google avatar

Alia S.

Yelp
One of my favorite places to eat Indian food. The dishes are consistently amazing and make for the perfect comfort meal

Candace B.

Yelp
The food is amazing. The naan is sooo good! The service is excellent. It's a small restaurant, but worth a try if you're in the south loop. Make sure you check the hours. They close for and hour between lunch and dinner l.
google avatar

Rob E.

Yelp
The veggie combo is more than enough for 2, with lots of leftovers, wish they would allow for substitutions.
google avatar

Ernie H.

Yelp
It's a block off Michigan ave. It's not a chain so it's gets my vote in spite of being in between Harold's Fried Chicken and Lao Szechuan. Our server AC welcoming smile is what drew us in. The menu looks suspiciously Indian. In retrospect a good portion of the Himalayan MT is in India. Our one dish with our side of Nan was more than enough for my wife and I. We got the Himalayan mixed grill of shrimps, 2 kinds of chicken, 2 kinds of sausage in a bed of onions served in a sizzling plate that tantalizes your sense of smell, sight and sound. None of them tasted the same and all were really tasty. Some chicken was a touch dry - I'm nitpicking.
google avatar

Joani O.

Yelp
This is my daughter's go to for Indian when she's at school in the south loop and she suggested we have it for lunch one day. I'm so glad she did. We had the chicken tikka masala with basmati rice and garlic naan. It was excellent. We ordered medium and the spice level was perfect. I look forward to returning and trying other dishes.
google avatar

Adam K.

Yelp
What is Himalayan cuisine? It could be northern Indian, Nepal or Tibetan cuisine. This restaurant is Indian. The restaurant interior is modern and organized. The menu covers all the expected northern dishes such as tandoori, vindaloos, tikka masala with chicken, lamb or vegetarian. It also has a good selection of appetizers and naans. It is byob (there is a good liquor store about 100 feet south). The portions are the right size, and the service is friendly. For two people with one appetizer and two main dishes is $50 before gratuity. It is one of the few good restaurants that is close to the Auditorium Theater.
google avatar

Angelina Z.

Yelp
Ordered takeout and got samosas, 3 entrees, and sides of rice and naan. The chicken makhani was wonderful--I might say it's the best I've ever had. The chicken was so tender, and the spices were super fragrant. The paneer was good, too, a nice level of creaminess. I wasn't the biggest fan of the lentil dish, but that may just be personal preference.
google avatar

N.J. M.

Yelp
Five words: come here for Indian food. Seriously, you won't regret it, especially if you're already in the south loop or nearby the loop. That's exactly the reason we stopped by one Saturday afternoon after visiting the Chicago Art Institute. It was just a short walk from the museum and the reviews were promising. We were able to be seated right away (no-frills but clean) and there were a number of classic options plus more authentic options on the menu. We ordered the samosas, chicken makhani, and chili shrimp plus two mango lassi. My friend has a severe tree nut allergy and we realized the chicken makhani may have nuts and when we checked with the server he kindly told us not to worry and pointed us to options without tree nuts. We replaced the chicken makhani with chicken chili masala, which reinforces that there are truly many dishes to accommodate all diets and allergies at Himalayan. All of our food came in large portions and was shareable - these three dishes were even a little too much food for us, but all of the food was delicious and reasonably priced! We will certainly be back!
google avatar

Aditi S.

Yelp
We ordered takeout from this place and we're thoroughly impressed. Everything from the packaging to the taste was excellent. We ordered the samosa as an appetizer and they were crispy on the outside and the inside filling was super tasty and spiced well. The paneer tikka masala was the best I've had in a long time and spiced perfectly. My husband had the chicken makhani and loved it. The dal makhani was fine but paled in comparison to the other dishes. We were satisfied with our order and have leftovers to finish!
google avatar

Jazz S.

Yelp
Cute casual hole-in-the-wall Indian spot that's BYOB! Defs a unique combination with decent prices for the area considering the good portions. The food was really good here, and comparable to other great Indian spots. The naan is soo fluffy and soft! We got the mutter paneer at a 4 spice level and it was pretty spicy!! Recommend probably a 3 or lower unless you can really handle your spice.
google avatar

Melody H.

Yelp
This place was a very pleasant surprise! The momo was SO yummy and highly recommend getting it in the chili. The eggplant curry dish was also full of flavor and went great with some white rice & naan. Great place if you want yummy food quickly & at a great price.
google avatar

Yelp
When I was living in the suburbs, I used to always love this restaurant to order pickup or delivery from (Niles location). After moving to the city, I was pleasantly surprised to see the familiar name pop up on my apps. According to their website, it looks like it's the same family of restaurants. My go-to dish is ALWAYS curry chicken with garlic naan. I like how they have a Meal For One option with the curry chicken, 10oz of rice, and one large naan. The portion size is perfect for a really good meal (and leftovers if you can't finish your food like me), and you won't have too much or too little of the rice and naan to go with it! The chicken curry is ridiculously tender and juicy, and the naan is always fresh and fluffy. For someone who loves spice, but can't really handle it, I always order at LEAST medium. I feel like lots of the flavor comes from the spice, so getting it mild doesn't do the curry any justice. Forever one of my favorite places whenever I'm craving Indian food and don't want to leave my apartment!
google avatar

Dimitri G.

Yelp
Nice job all around! We were always big fans of their Niles location, this one is great too, I wish it served alcohol though - one star off.
google avatar

Ojus P.

Yelp
Would give this a 3.5 rating if I could. Chana Masala - 4/5. Mild is a good spice level. Tasty gravy. Mutter Paneer - 2/5. Overly creamy at mild. Drowns out the pea and paneer flavor. Garlic Naan - 3/5. Fine but on the overly fluffy sides. Roti - 3/5. Overly packed down, good taste.

Anjila S.

Yelp
Great food and great service. I will definitely go back for some soup momo. Great service, very nice people.
google avatar

Aaliyah L.

Yelp
Ordered through Ubereats for lunch and although this isn't my usual Indian spot, it was pretty good for sure. I ordered chicken tikka masala, veggie samosas, raita, and naan. The spice level was intense, but I love spicy so I enjoyed it. It could've been more sauce to go with the rice (looks like a lot but it wasn't very creamy), but that's okay. Everything else was pretty spot on, better than I expected.
google avatar

Jorgie H.

Yelp
Fast, courteous service! No wait for lunch on a Saturday. Amazing food! Pictured - chili chicken momo (Nepali dumplings), lamb saag, garlic naan.

Yelp
I've been wanting to check this place out for quite some time, especially since I love Indian food. When I walked in the spot, it smelled amazing. Even before I ordered my food I knew I was in for a treat. My waitress was, for the most part friendly, although she seemed a little shy and her accent was very strong and a bit tricky to figure out, so it was something I had to mentally navigate through. As for the food, I ordered chicken tikka masala with the side of naan bread and Jasmine rice, along with a mango Lassi to wash it down. The main entree was amazing--very freshly cooked, thick chunks of chicken, and the sauce was made perfectly. It was warm but not too spicy. The naan bread could have been better because it was slightly scorched but at least it was still edible. Last but not least, the lassi drink tasted very similar to a fruit flavored Dannon yogurt. I absolutely enjoyed it; it would feel like a complementary to any spicy food in order to neutralize any heat. Overall I enjoyed my dish so much, I decided to tip the waitresses four bucks as a result for their great service.
google avatar

Casey A.

Yelp
Eh, we ordered 2 lamb dishes, shrimp vindaloo, chicken masala, samosas. All as med-spicy, although there was no heat -- at all! and the grease level was well high. This was for delivery so maybe something lost in translation. I'm going to stick to my spot in wicker that is much better in quality and heat.

Marvin M.

Yelp
We enjoyed the food. Attentive service. Great price (food served family style. Appetizer, salad, and one entree was enough for two people and was under $40).
google avatar

Jatin A.

Yelp
In Chicago for the APS March Meeting, and the Himalayan Restaurant is in close proximity to our hotel. So, we headed over there before going to the Institute of Art. The staff over here is welcoming, and provides a warm service. As for the food, we were pretty satisfied. The butter chicken was nothing extraordinary -- we have had much better. It could have been creamier or even sweeter. However, the other dish, the tandoori chicken, was fantastic. We ordered a spicy version of the dish and it was loaded with spices. Somehow, it didn't feel dry, and the spices all blended and worked well nicely to make a delicious dish! The mango Lassi over here is bottled and is likely to be thicker than you'd expect.

J P.

Yelp
Ordered through ubereats for delivery and order made correctly and arrived within 40 min. The naan was fresh and soft. Mattar paneer made spicy as per request but could've had more paneer. The samosa and onion pakora were great as well along with the side chutneys.
google avatar

Asil A.

Yelp
Surprisingly exceeded my expectations. The service was great and the food came out incredibly fast. The food was absolutely amazing. And I don't say that lightly. Indian food is a hit or miss, usually being a miss. The food tasted home made with all the right spices and levels of hotness. We ordered the tikka massala, garlic Nan, veg simosas and lamb vindaloo. Would definitely come back!
google avatar

Jennifer B.

Yelp
This place has the best soup momos. Was there for lunch and great combo options. We'll be back.
google avatar

Robyn T.

Yelp
We order delivery from Himalayan often and I've gotten my coworkers hooked. I love their navratan korma especially because they use a cashew based gravy. My coworkers order the tikka masala and another chicken entree. I recommend ordering extra rice, the first few times we ordered, the rice portions were very small. It's a hit at our office and we get excited when we decide to order from here.
google avatar

Shannon S.

Yelp
I haven't physically been here but I've ordered Uber Eats twice, and both times I've been very impressed with the quality of the food and the portion size. The food is always well packaged too. In the tikka masala, there are tons of pieces of chicken. The naan glistens with the freshness from the oven. I will be ordering again and again!
google avatar

Nikyta N.

Yelp
The food here is great! The chicken biriyani, wings, and dumplings are my favorite. Be careful, the sauce is spicy. Service was good as well.

Yelp
Excellent flavors Calamari on point Anniversary dinner with my wonderful wife !! Can't wait to visit here again!! Love the lamb, chicken and veggies!! Always nice to support Mom & Pops r

Yelp
Great momo, and keema mutter. Very flavorful . My fav was actually the naan though. Very fresh and cooked perfectly.
google avatar

Eric L.

Yelp
My wife and I had a two person meal delivered with tandoori chicken, chicken tikka, lamb vindaloo, and vegetable samosas. It's the second time I've ordered here and both times the food has been very flavorful, fresh, and a good value for the price. Strongly recommend you order here. I've never died in but the space when I walked by looks clean and elegant. Highly recommend.

Yelp
The food and the attention was on point. My food was delivered on time and was delicious. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. The wait was about about 5 minutes and the samosas were hot and very tasty.
