Hing Wang Restaurant - Review - Chicago - The Infatuation

"While we haven’t been to every single Chinese restaurant in the city, we feel pretty strongly that Hing Wang’s “best fried rice in town” sign isn’t just an advertisement. The fantastic spicy beef fried rice is the stuff of neighborhood legend. Just ask any Uptowner or student from Truman College. Hing Wang has been the people’s choice since the ’90s. We haven’t been here yet, but want you to know this spot exists." - Team Infatuation

Google
The fried rice is good. However they stopped using bean sprouts a year ago. Fried rice isn’t official without it. Most pics online have it. Service was OK. Took 10 minutes which is fine for fresh food. Fried rice was excellent, beef and broccoli very good and Orange chicken was nothing to brag about. I drove an hour to come try them out. It was good food. Maybe not an hour away good, but if I lived in the neighborhood I’d be a customer.

Google
Hands down the best spot for fried rice. I’ve been coming here for over 20+ years along with my family. It is our absolute favorite. Kim already knows our order the moment she hears the first item. They’re family owned and operated. I normally get the chicken and shrimp fried rice x3 spicy, has the best kick to it. Parking isn’t really an issue, they’re right next to the red line too. Cash only, which can sometimes suck but they have an ATM inside. Definitely recommend!

Google
So I heard about their fried rice and decided to try the combination. It wasn't bad but not great. I found the rice a bit too mushy. It is good Asian American fried rice but not good authentic Chinese fried rice.

Google
The fried rice here is so good compared to a lot of ther Chinese places I've been to, a small serving of rice by yourself is enough to make you full. Plus the egg rolls are juicy and delicious. The orange chicken is also a plus as its so fragrant it makes your mouth water. Only thing I wouldn't recommend ordering is there chicken wings since their dry, but other than that a lot of their food is good.

Google
Terrible customer service. I traveled an hour to get to this place. Just to not be greeted and ignored. Everyone in the kitchen looked at me and continued working and answering phones. One of the cooks with his filthy apron on...came out and sat in the chair next to the kitchen door and I spoke twice and he said nothing back. He didn't bother to say hello in English or Mandarin/Cantonese. I can understand/speak those languages as well!!! Also, while I was being ignored one of the cooks was cleaning off the pans IN the garage...like literally in the garbage. I'm really upset because I really wanted my small order of fried rice since I traveled so far. They clearly don't value their customers. But now that I see how terrible their customer service and food prep is... I won't be back and I won't recommend!

Google
No frills Chinese fried rice. The combination fried rice gave extremely generous servings of prawn and chicken. Taste is just the right spice and umami. Slightly oily but that's Chinese food for you. Cash only. The shop itself is a little run down but it didn't distract me from the authentic Chinese experience.

Google
I went here after hearing a plethora of good reviews, but sadly the food didn’t match up. the egg rolls were pretty amazing, but that’s about it. the orange chicken had little to no flavor and wasn’t very tasty…

JANIE CHAMBERS

Google
Came based off of TikTok reviews and I will say this is absolutely the best fried rice I've ever had. Really good and flavorful. I also had the spicy wings and egg rolls and everything was really good! TikTok never lets me down. Definitely will be returning! CASH ONLY. They do have an ATM in the restaurant. Parking can be tight.

Yelp
The fried rice is to die for. One of the best fried rice in Chicago. I usually get the combination with bbq pork land make it spicy. Their shrimp or chicken Kow is great too. It's a take out place but you can also eat there. Service is quick.

Yelp
Genuinely my favorite hole-in-the-wall in all of Chicago. We don't need to talk about how much I've been here - it would embarrass you because you've never been that committed to anything. You don't go here to hang; you go here to slap exactly $17 in cash on the counter, tell them you came to pick up a large order of BBQ pork fried rice, and then leave to go and house that on your own because you deserve it goddammit. Seriously though, this place has no vibe, just take your magical tasting food and go home with it. They put all their effort into flavor and don't need to be bothered by how their restaurant made your insta story look. This also may seem expensive for fried rice, but this is some of the best stuff in the city, and one order is easily two meals - they heap the portions so big that it barely fits in the container Note: There's an ATM if you forgot cash

Yelp
I was on the hunt for best fried rice in the city and Yelp and Reddit led me here--they were NOT wrong. The fried flavor is delicious, this is the kind of fried rice I dream of. It's definitely a lowkey hole in the wall spot, but it is clean inside. I even saw the cashier cleaning the floors while I was waiting. I wouldn't stick around, but there were people eating at tables. The reviews saying the service is awful had me nervous, but honestly I didn't find anyone rude or unwelcoming. It's just a busy, no frills spot so be ready to order and give them the cash and you won't have any issues. I did find a few tiny egg shells in the big egg parts so that's my only downside. The spicy sauce is really spicy but it has good flavor so I like a tiny dip. Huge portions, right off the Wilson red line stop, delicious flavor, and short wait while it's made fresh.

Yelp
Love Hing Wang! My go to order is a small combination spicy rice and a mango smoothie with tapioca balls. It's delicious every. single. time! I call ahead and my food is almost always ready when I arrive (although I definitely don't mind waiting a few extra minutes because it's worth it!). The employees are very straight forward but they match energy. I've never had an issue because I'm polite and respect their service.

Yelp
If you really want to talk about a hole-in-the-wall, this is it. It's a true gem. I wouldn't say it's the best fried rice I've ever had like some other reviewers said, but it's definitely up there. When you walk in, it's very unassuming and lowkey janky, but the staff really whip up some bomb food here! They absolutely packed up my fried rice combination to the brim of the to-go container so I really felt like I got my monies worth. The place had some seedy looking people sitting around and I'm not surprised given its location right next to the Wilson Red/Purple line station, but that didn't phase me. The food was excellent! Just a note, this place is *CASH ONLY* but they do have an ATM inside just in case! I'll be back!

Yelp
Fried rice here is fire! Best in Chicago! Recommend spicy combination fried rice! You will thank me, it wont disappoint!

Yelp
Gross & not worth the price. Go to in-on Thai if you want good take out. That's all I have to say.

Melisss P.

Yelp
I was at HW last week... I was at the counter - giving my order and I saw a cook wipe his nose and face - then put that hand in the cooler of white rice - scoop up the rice and throw it into the wok... Absolutely disgusting.... The restaurant has numerous State Health code violations... now I know why.... The kitchen is filthy, and the cooks don't care.... I ordered white rice, and I asked the man if they could use a utensil to scoop out my white rice - I told him I saw the employee use his hand... he gave the excuse that the wok will kill any bacteria.... an absolute lie.... Will never go again...

Alwin A.

Yelp
Excellent environment and good food , perfect service and the chicken fried rice is the best

Yelp
Hands down the best fried rice I have had anywhere! I ordered the combination fried rice and had them put the spicy sauce on the side just in case I didn't like it. It actually gave it just a little kick without too much heat or spice. Highly recommend. It was great without the sauce so either way you can't go wrong. This is not a place I would have ever thought to get food from and probably wouldn't go there at night. But if you can get past the not so great ambiance and order to go, I promise you won't regret it! Cash only. I also had the orange chicken and egg rolls both were good. I have enough food for 3 meals. I don't usually write reviews but I've had a hard time finding reasonable priced Chinese food in this city that is edible. I've finally found my go to!!!

Yelp
Going by the décor, I didn't have a lot of expectations when I walked in. But boy, was I in for a surprise. Hands down the best fried rice I have ever had, and I've had some really good ones in different countries. Don't let the outside fool you, the food here is absolutely amazing!
google avatar

Jason W.

Yelp
Best fried rice in the city... hands down... and the portions are overflowing. Ask for spicy if you're into that - it's not extreme but very flavorful. This is a hidden gem of Uptown.
google avatar

Kevin J.

Yelp
Cash only and bullet proof glass. The inside looks like your typical hole in the wall Chinese joint but don't be fooled... they have the best fried rice in Chicago.
google avatar

Tresa M.

Yelp
This places food is so good! I've been going there for abt 15 years now and they got the best fried rice (spicy) and I love their curry chicken. Me and my husband literally travel 26 miles every few months to get our Hing Wang fix. Egg foo young, pepper steak, combo fried rice... they are all mouth watering. Please don't EVER close down... I'll be so depressed.

Juan A.

Yelp
Food is not that same, I asked for spicy and it was not spicy at all and no taste Shrimp Fried Rice
google avatar

Alexus S.

Yelp
The spicy fried rice is literal CRACK COCAINE. I don't even be smacking but this rice got me SMACKIN' my lips it's so good boyyyy. Yeah service is sub par and the restaurant itself is not at all nice but we paying for our food ladies, so sit back, turn on some Netflix and top it off with some take out. Servings are ginormous. I got three larges and that shit was POUNDS I was out here struggling to hold the damn bag. Also, if the service sucks that just means you don't have to tip- everyone wins! (Forgot to take a pic because I inhaled the rice before it even cooled down)

Yelp
YUM Right off of the Wilson stop is one of the best Chinese restaurants I have ever been to! We had to take the food for carry out, as they are not allowing dining in. I ordered the food ahead of time, and everything was ordered to be spicy. I ordered the large chicken fried rice, a small combination (shrimp, chicken, and beef) fried rice, Mongolian chicken, two fried wing appetizers, and one tofu chicken. I wish I just ordered two large combination fried rice! It was very good! The only two issues I had with my order was that the Mongolian chicken was not what I had gotten at other places. Not that it was bad (I went back for seconds) but I thought Mongolian chicken was a darker curry? Oh well, we still ate it and it was good! Secondly, we ordered the tofu stirfry veggies, and we wanted it to have a similar flavor to the chicken curry, but what we ended up getting was stirfry veggies with tofu and pieces of chicken. I guess next time we'll just keep the veggies with the veggies and keep the protein on its own. Again, a small misunderstanding, but the dish was very good and was still eaten. Two major tips: 1) they do not use credit cards here! Please bring cash! They have an ATM in the back, but it is a very generic ATM machine, and will charge your bank! 2) for the fried wing appetizer, ask for extra sauce! Everything was eaten, leftovers were devoured, and we were all left wondering when we would return for more! Highly highly recommend!

Yelp
THE BEST FRIED RICE IN CHICAGO...possibly in my entire life; I eat a lot of Chinese! This was their small... they had the staple the top shut bc there was so much food. This place is no frills and very to the point. The staff is to the point and quick! TRY THIS PLACE.

Yelp
To those claiming the service is bad or the owners are rude, I'd say I'm not expecting them to greet me with a hug and gab about American Idol when I'm there to pick up my order containing the BEST FRIED RICE in town! The food is GREAT, although I've only ever ordered the fried rice since it's the first thing I ordered and always want it because it's that good! Cash only. Quick service. Don't expect to be BFF's with the person taking 137 orders in the last 30min. Enjoy!
google avatar

Yelp
Hands down best fried rice in town if you can go pass the decore'.. it will blow your mind

Christine T.

Yelp
Oh, yeah. This is the real deal American Chinese! Cash only, bulletproof glass turny thing to get your order, and fresh, hot, not too greasy but greasy enough delicious food. BBQ pork fried rice with big chunks of pork was a stand out, but egg rolls and beef dishes also great. This is the place!
google avatar

Jim D.

Yelp
The best shrimp fried rice from a casual restaurant hands down. I've lived in Chicago for years & just now found this gem. Make sure to get it spicy because that is what makes it so great although it mild at best. Found this on the yelp app after all & this is why I'm a yelper today!!!
google avatar

Yelp
I have a very fond memories of eating simple yet good fried rice from small hole in the wall restaurants in south side Chicago growing up. I've been looking for something similar but hadn't had too much success. I came across Hing Wang on yelp and decided to give it a try since they are self proclaimed "Best fried rice in Town." I got shrimp fried rice the spicy version and bbq pork fried rice with out the spice. Some of the reviewer said the spicy version is too spicy for them so I figured I can mix the two if it is too spicy. I guess the flavor profile is ok. Well seasoned fried rice without too much grease or soy sauce. I liked the spicy level and didn't think it was overwhelming. The texture of the rice was a little bit too dry for my taste but not too bad. I preferred the bbq pork rice although the size of the shrimp was impressive in the shrimp fried rice and not the tiny little brine shrimp you find in most other Chinese restaurants. So I would have to say although it was vaguely reminiscent of the food I had years ago, it clearly lacked something that I couldn't quite pin point. Perhaps it lacked eggs and veggies. Maybe the rice was too al dente. Whatever the reason, it made me want to continue on this search for the perfect fried rice of my yesteryears.
google avatar

Georgia G.

Yelp
Best Fried rice in the city and large portions! Everything else on the menu is just ordinary. Don't come here if you want good customer service. I usually call ahead for pick up it takes 15 mins and it's delicious.
google avatar

Ryan M.

Yelp
Hing Wang lives up to the hype of having the best fried rice in town. Without fail, I order the spicy chicken fried rice every time. It's so good that I honestly order it close to once a week. Prices are great (even with the increase for COVID) and the portions are massive. A large fried rice feeds my fiancé and I for dinner with enough left for leftovers the next day.

Chic S.

Yelp
Good Good Good! I tried this restaurant last year and I've been going back at least once a week! Fried rice, egg fo young, spicy beef hay you can't go wrong. Customer service is great oh they only take CASH! That's the only thing I can complain about
google avatar

Rachel V.

Yelp
Large portions but not an overly large menu. Decent food, but kinda meehhh, nothing special. I thought the prices were kinda on the high side but felt that was offset since the portions were pretty big. Oh, and CASH ONLY!

Joanna S.

Yelp
Best fried rice. And other dishes are also great but the rice...yeah, I'm addicted. Service is great. Always quick and on time. No complaints. Cash only
google avatar

Luke S.

Yelp
It's the best fried rice I've ever had. It really is, but every time I come here I'm reminded how rude the owner is. I'm a friendly person and she just doesn't care about her customers. You'll never get a "thank you" or a "how's it going". I've dumped a lot of money on rice here, but she really needs to get out of the business if she's going to act so miserable.
google avatar

Jan S.

Yelp
My experience is that I cannot understand what the hype is about regarding their spicy fried rice for one thing. Also $14 for a large is ridiculous. I ordered a large mushroom very spicy. They gave me spicy but if it wasn't for that it would be so bland. It didn't contain onions, eggs or bean sprouts often found in fried rice either. I took a few bites and threw it away. My order contained a soda so my order came to $15. Plus I didn't even get soy sauce.
google avatar

Dane Y.

Yelp
Today was my first time coming here and it will be my last. Rude customer service and there was a pebble in my chicken fried rice. Not even going to bother to finish it.
google avatar

Miranda B.

Yelp
I am not kidding you. This place is fantastic. I love the spicy shrimp fried rice and the bbq pork fried rice. The spicy is a little too spicy for me, but it's where most of the flavor is, so I get both and mix. You can also get the spicy sauce on the side if you're unsure. Also, the wings are absolutely delicious. I moved away from this neighborhood and now drive over 30 minutes past probably 15 other similar places to order from here. Plus it's very reasonably priced.
google avatar

Sabrina R.

Yelp
I grew up in Uptown and I have been going to this place for YEARS, since they were located across the street underneath the Red Line. I really believe that they have the BEST fried rice I've ever had. I always get the combo rice, spicy. There are huge chunks of beef, and the shrimp are always the jumbo shrimp, which is rare for Chicago chinese restaurants. The people that work there always remember me, and ask me how I've been. They recently opened up their Vietnamese portion of the restaurant, and I am a huge fan of their spring rolls (no pork, thank you) and their Pho.... this place just keeps getting better. I hope they are around forever!
google avatar

Alexandra P.

Yelp
Hell yes. Their friend rice is the bomb!!! Absolutely delicious, and pleasantly huge portions! Will be back for sure. Thank you!
google avatar

Angela D.

Yelp
Owners are extremely rude but I won't lie the food is good. If they were more appealing I'll probably eat here more often but I just can't stand to spend money and be treated like they are doing me a favor.
google avatar

Johan M.

Yelp
NASTY! Very unsanitary!!! I ordered my food he grabed my money, gave me my change & turned around started making the food. Grabbing some vegetables and putting in in the frying pan after touching money. Gross!!! Cancelled my order & walked out! Won't never go back!

Josue O.

Yelp
Love their fried rice; however, last time I went in I saw one of the owners trying to kill a cockroach. She was screaming so loud like if the roach was going to eat her. Even one of the customers that was waiting had to stepped in because she was so afraid. The city needs to inspect this place again. Of course I didn't ordered anything after that incident, I just left. Never coming back. P.S. Owners are rude!

Yelp
I've been associated with Truman College and uptown for about a decade now. I went there for high school and some college courses and I also lived on Thorndale and Broadway for a bit so Hing Wang is one of those restaurants I can claim to be intimately familiar with. And when I say intimately I'm talking about watching the sun rise, making it eggs for breakfast kinda intimate. So please believe me when I say this as I say it with a pure heart and honest tongue: Hing Wang has the best fried rice ever made anywhere ever in the history of everything both future and past. The combination fried rice has beef, chicken and shrimp and is meaty and delicious, greasy and everything bad for you. It's so damn good. It's an embarrassing gigantic portion stuffed into a takeout box and then stapled shut just to keep the steaming and awesome contents contained. You can order it in varying degrees of spicy from "no spicy" to "little spicy" all the way up to an almost unbearable "extra spicy." My choice is "regular spicy." *** EDIT EDIT EDIT *** Below I originally reported that Hing Wang had closed and that you were all out of fucking luck and too bad. But OMG I was wrong! Hing Wang relocated ACROSS THE STREET from their former location and into a larger space. I stopped in last week and let me tell you - the fried rice is still absolutely fantastic. I was a fool for missing it when I drove past before but I urge everyone reading this - GO THERE NOW AND EAT. I don't care if you're performing CPR on kittens, trying to save a drowning old person... whatever. Go to Hing Wang and eat their fried rice for me. Do me that little favor. Mkay? *** EDIT EDIT EDIT OVER *** So what's the catch, you're asking yourself right now. Well, Hing Wang is closed. I don't know when and I don't know how but we drove past not too long ago and it was a different business now. Hing Wang is no more and I'm still grieving as I've sent person after person to Hing Wang, converting them to "Wangism," my made up religion revolving around our shared worship of their combination fried rice. All us Wangists now wander the streets aimlessly, ever searching for something to replace our beloved deity. Will there ever be fried rice better than Hing Wang's combination fried rice? Fuck no. There can't be. And for that I'll never smile again.
google avatar

Kevin M.

Yelp
This is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants. They fill up everything as much as possible so you really get a bang for your buck! Good flavor all around and food is made fast. I haven't tried too much off their menu since I'm only there for their rice. Make sure you have cash and don't wait too long to place an order because they close early. Can't say much about their customer service since I only do carry out, but don't expect good customer service since there's not that many workers in the front. Still a great place to get a quick bite if you're on the go!
google avatar

Danny M.

Yelp
I stopped by here with a group of friends during a short break at school because it was close by. This is a Viet and Chinese restaurant, but the selection is predominantly Chinese food. They do offer Pho, but that is about it for the Viet section. Like others said, this is a place you only want to come when there is light outside. It is located by a really bad area. When we got here, it was pretty busy around 12pm on a Friday. The line moved pretty fast and I decided to order the Spicy Pepper Steak Lunch Special that comes with chicken fried rice and an egg roll. The Pepper Steak had a weird texture and it tasted nothing like the one's I am accustomed too. It had a weird mixed of spiciness and sweetness flavor to it. The fried rice was not bad and more importantly it is not bland. I took a bite of the egg roll, but it was just okay. The service here is pretty bad for the most part. You do not feel welcome and I got that vibe that they do not really care for their customers because they already have their set customer based from the location.
google avatar

Danielle S.

Yelp
They have some of the best Shrimp fried rice I've ever had!! The shrimp are a nice size and are thoroughly cleaned (which is rare in neighborhood chinese restaurants)! Egg rolls are good but beef fried rice was pretty bad, meat tasted weird and was cut too thick..eww gross! Also, cash only which sucks.
google avatar

Michelle P.

Yelp
Kind of pricey. Cash only. Everything is spice-optional. Everything. Really meaty fried rice-- I got the combo. Taste is above average. Chicken wings are above average as well.
google avatar

Ernie C.

Yelp
All reviewers for Hing Wang are right when they say this is an excellent restaurant. It is a little hole in the wall (predominately carryout) chinese restaurant that is a little known secret. Order the fried rice (veggie, plain, combo, shrimp or chicken) - You will not regret it! It is so tasty. Try it medium spicy. I found out about it when I was a student at Truman College and I would go here at least twice a week. It is hands down the best fried rice I ever tasted. The egg foo young, subgum and chicken broccoli are all good too. I usually take it to go, but be prepared for people asking you for change if you choose to dine in. The restaurant is located on Wilson across the street from Truman College in the evolving Uptown neighborhood, the future home of Target is right around the corner. Also, a 7 Eleven just opened a few feet away a few weeks ago.
google avatar

Kathiana E.

Yelp
Some of the best fried rice I have ever had, hands down. I did not enjoy the entree dishes (chicken and beef) It reminded me a lot of mall Chinese food. Due to this, I only order the spicy chick or veggie fried rice. I am never disappointed. Cash only and no delivery options.
google avatar

Shaina K.

Yelp
This place is okay. I've stopped here a few times after work with co-workers. The location is huge, and it looks like they might have live music sometimes? It's cheap, and they have pretty quick service, but it's nothing to write home about. Like other reviewers have said, there are so many other options nearby that this place is never my first option.
google avatar

Tifani M.

Yelp
I don't know what kind of drugs they're putting in the fried rice, but I want more. Don't let the negative comments derail you from coming here. I don't know what went wrong with their order but make sure you try their rice!! I usually get spicy combination rice and have also ordered everything in the combination rice separately. The rice is beyond tasty. It is immaculate. I've also ordered their smoothie. Pineapple mixed with mango. It's very satisfying especially in a hot summers day. I don't order it as much anymore because 1. They took away the bar. 2. I only ever have enough cash for rice when I'm out there. I've had their crab Rangoon and also their vegetable egg roll. It's delicious and hot. Those are the only things I order from this place although I'm sure everything else tastes good. Every chance I get to be on that side of Chicago, I definitely make sure to stop by. The only annoying thing about this restaurant is they only take cash!! They have an ATM machine inside to take care of that problem

Renee F.

Yelp
The worst food ever, they take the phone off the hook right before the lunch special ends at 2:30. Of course at 2:31 you can get through for them to tell you the lunch special is over. My co-workers like this place it's horrible to me!

Yelp
With so many Thai restaurants on the north side, it's hard to find a good Chinese food restaurant when you are looking for one. Well today, I really had a taste for shrimp fried rice. I thought about Mei Shung on Broadway @ Catalpa, but the rice wasn't memorable. Next, I thought about trekking to Young's Chinese (Ashland/Irving Park), but I found their rice to be a bit salty. Then I remembered my friend (a Chicago native) mentioning a place on Wilson that has THE best spicy fried rice, which I had never heard of. I figured that I'd give it a shot since it was on the way to my nail salon. Hing Wang is on Wilson, near Broadway--definitely a daylight only, get in/get out type of neighborhood. So I went in with the intention of getting my food and getting out of there. Apparently everyone else had the same idea in mind, because the place was noticeably empty. You can tell that it used to be a carryout only place, because all of the patrons got their food to go. I ordered a small shrimp fried rice, non-spicy, from a lady who was eating sunflower seeds at the front counter. Gross. Before completing my order, I took a quick peek at the chefs to see if they were eating on the job too, and was relieved to see them all busy at work (not spreading their saliva all over the place while cracking nut shells). My food was ready in about 10 minutes. I took my bag to the car and opened the visibly stuffed box to find very fresh, steamy hot fried rice with the right amount of shrimp, egg, green onions, and bean sprouts. A lot of Chinese food places put small shrimp in their rice, but not Hing Wang. The shrimp were medium sized and plenty in number. Very satisfying. Glad I didn't waste my time with the other foods (like the Vietnamese food). Did I find my go-to place for fried rice? I don't know. The rice was a bit on the salty side, but that might be a Chicago thing. (I now what you're thinking. For the record, my taste buds are fine. I had some some shrimp fried rice from my favorite spot in Los Angeles, and it wasn't salty. ) I might go back and try the spicy rice...when it's light out...get in/get out.

Yelp
I love the fried rice here. Best place in town for it. I usually get it spicy. Sometimes it's better to sacrifice ice service for taste. It can get real busy. They'll have alot of customers regardless what other reviewers say. They don't take credit cards anymore. Cash only!
