"Spend the day sunbathing at Nantasket Beach, and spend the evening munching on some fried Ipswich clams from the Hingham Lobster Pound. If this spot looks like a bait shop, it’s because it used to be a bait shop. Unlike most clam shacks, Hingham Lobster Pound adds a layer of breadcrumbs to increase the crunch factor. It’s open seasonally, from St. Patrick’s Day through Christmas Eve." - Terrence Doyle

"Hingham Lobster Pound is famous for its affordable, fresh, and reliable stock of lobsters and other seasonal seafoods. For first-timers, its location is a bit tucked away and can be easy to miss. Here, you’ll most likely run into regulars who know their order by heart. Though the shop is named after lobster, its fried clams are also worth a try: Your choice of either tender, large clam strips or sweet whole belly clams are coated in batter and fried crispy to order." - Valerie Li Stack

"Hingham Lobster Pound used to be a bait shop. Now it sells what the bait aims to catch. Hit Nantasket Beach during the day, then hit the Pound for a few lobsters and, you guessed it, a fried fish sandwich. Hingham Lobster Pound is currently open for takeout; it closes for the season on Christmas Eve." - Terrence Doyle

Google
This place is the real deal! By far the best Haddock dinners, but everything is really good. Our family has been going for 5 generations and it’s the only place we all love when the family comes in from all over the country.

Google
We came upon this place after a quick search of local food. The rating is good so we dropped by to give it a shot. Me and my friends all ordered something. I got the lobster roll which was absolutely amazing. It was packed with fresh lobster meat and tasted so delicious. It hit the spot after a long day spent in the sun at the beach! I would say this is the best lobster roll I’ve had in my 3 years in the Boston area. All my friends were gushing about how good the food was here when we were driving back in the car. I loved how cute their storefront is. Everything is written on whiteboards and there’s just a bit of seating, no full size tables. I loved this cute hole in the wall spot - maybe even could call it a hidden gem. Give it a try if you’re in the neighborhood! (No public bathrooms)

Google
This was recommended by two clients who lived in the area of this place. The food was very fresh, warm, and crispy. I brought a seafood platter for 2, but it can feed three. My mom loves the onion rings, which I brought as an extra side.

Google
Ordered a seafood plate. Ended up with a clams, fries and fish(not haddock). Called and was told the new person misunderstood my husband's order but that was what we paid for, a combo plate. Food was very scarce and had an awful aftertaste. Neither of us finished the meal. Very disappointed. The Cole slaw was the best part of the meal.

Google
Really good haddock and chips platter. Friendly, fast service, and all takeout. Parking can be hard because of the location on a merge and bend on 3a. Because you're getting takeout fried fish, it will steam in the bag but when we had our fish it was still crispy and juicy. Really five star quality but giving four until we go back and see what the second visit is like.

Google
It's a gem in the south shore area. They do to go only. Ordered a seafood combo plate and a lobster bisque. All taste pretty good. Bisque was creamy and full of lobster flavor with some lobster meat. The seafood combo plate had fried fish (cooked perfectly), whole clams, scallops, big shrimps, fries, and cole slaw. Generous portion. One plate would be enough for 2 not very hungry persons. Friendly service.

Google
Over all, my family was really unimpressed and rather disappointed. The Lobster roll was the worst, it tasted old and stringy and like it was frozen, not fresh. Along with it being all tail meat and no claw meat. It wasn't very flavorful, which made me think it definitely wasn't fresh. Along with it being on a squished hamburger bun. The plates were "ok" again, it didn't taste fresh. Our total was almost $60, and at a time where radio commercials are asking people to buy seafood at it's all time low price to help out fishermen. We are used to Woods seafood in Plymouth, where the quality and portions are far better and NEVER a disappointment

Google
Take out seafood recommended by a local, I had the fried haddock, it was excellent!!! ( and I'm picky about seafood)

Jay C.

Yelp
please note---the hingham lobster pound appears permanently closed. was the place fro fried clams up until 2023. phone & website are discinnected :( sad day for the south shore

Sam O.

Yelp
Still the best to-go seafood place in the area. The portion is big and seafood is as fresh as you can get. Price is much more reasonable than other places close by considering seafood is not cheap by default. Highly recommend the Seafood Platter for Two as you get fish, scallops, shrimp, clam strips, and big oyster...

Kevin E.

Yelp
Made my yearly trip back to the area I grew up. Hingham lobster pound was always the best fried clams on the south shore. Had them today and they weren't as good as they usually are. The portion was considerably smaller than they have always been. The whole belly clams also weren't as plump as they always have been. They just didn't taste them same still a good whole belly clam plate. But they lacked the wow they always have had.

Pinkpeony L.

Yelp
Great spot to buy fish and lobster to cook as well as to buy prepared food and take home. Also, they have a picnic table where you can eat there, or you can join the locals by driving down 3A about 1/4 mile to the Hingham Bathing Beach, parking with a view of the water, and enjoying your meal there. (The sign says Hingham Residents Only, but I've never seen that enforced.) There's a bell to ring for service, if you haven't called ahead, which I recommend. You'll probably want to ask for extra tartar sauce, because their containers are very small. I don't recommend the lobster bisque. It was watery and there was only one small piece of lobster.

Nathan G.

Yelp
We love this place. Usually go to Nantasket in the morning and call in food order for lunch on the way out. Shrimp, fish, etc. are great. My daughters love the corn dog.

Wern O.

Yelp
TLDR: solid fried seafood platter Tbh I've never wanted to order the lobster roll here. I've seen other reviews and something seems off about serving the roll on anything besides the classic bun. BUT, but, we love getting the seafood platter. We don't live in the area but every time we go to Worlds End we grab a seafood platter and eat in the park.

Mel G.

Yelp
World's End is one of my fav summer spots to trek around, and I've driven past Hingham Lobster Pound many times. I hadn't eaten lunch yet and thought I'd use the chance to check it out. I steered away from the lobster roll after reading many others remark it was not very good, and decided to try a small whole clam bellies & onion rings (my staple are these items at the Clam Box in Ipswich). When the bag arrived, it looked like it fell into the fryer because it was so greasy. It was really salty and as others have mentioned--the clams really didn't taste like much other than breading. The server was kind and helpful, and that's always a star in my book. It's really the food (I didn't finish even half of it bc it wasn't very good), and in these ongoing tough times, I feel like I should give more of a heads up after these types of experiences.

Sammy S.

Yelp
Best fried clams on the south shore and one of the best places for steamed lobsters too. Be sure to get the unique banana fritters also... they are the best! Be warned the lobster roll comes on a hamburger bun, which is not my favorite, but you can not go wrong with the fried fish, clams, shrimp or scallops or any of the dinners, and again-- banana fritters!! We love stopping here!

Bruce H.

Yelp
This is the first time I've been to the Lobster Pound in over a year. I love Tony's Clam shop because they have the clam bellies. Hingham Lobster Pound advertises clam bellies but they don't have bellies. They really disguise the lack of clam bellies with lots of batter. You can hardly taste the clams. It was absolutely horrible. I will never go back

Patricia H.

Yelp
Delicious fried shrimp platter, definitely want to go back to try some grilled options or lobster. The woman taking orders was incredibly kind. A little pricy but very fresh food.

Gina F.

Yelp
This was the third lobster roll that I had during my time in Boston. It was a bit disappointing because it wasn't actually on the typical roll, but on a hamburger bun. The lobster itself was a bit chewy and didn't have too much flavor. I will say that it was the cheapest, though, of all three so it definitely had that going for it.

Sue N.

Yelp
Ive been stopping here on and off my whole life. I stopped by last night after about 6 years. We had a scallop plate and medium onion rings and everything was excellent. Fried perfectly, seasoned perfectly and a lot of food. My friend never ate here before and was extremely happy! Best onion rings of anyplace ive ever been! No problem for extra tartar sauce. We went across the street and ate at the beautiful state park!

Peter R.

Yelp
Service was cheerful and helpful. Live lobsters were healthy and delicious. Fish and chips and whole fried clams were tasty. Grilled halibut was cooked in tin foil, and was overcooked and tasted boiled. Decor was funky. No seating.

Rui A.

Yelp
I have never had a bad meal from this place . Fried clams and fish are always good and fresh...

Ruth C.

Yelp
I know times are expensive but I have eaten here for years and never before been disappointed. Sadly for mothers day we took the dogs to the beach and had to dine al dente. Thought this was a good idea to eat here and sit at the beach park and have dinner. The prices have soared here. I got a haddock sandwich and fries for $12.00. There might have been 4 oz of haddock because it didnt even fill up the whole hamburger bun. No lettuce or tomato and you had to pay extra for the fries. It came solo not even a pickle or chips. The fish was flaky and fresh but the fries a bit soggy and over salted, why did they even salt them? No other fish shack salts the fries and fish. I wanted to try the chowder but when I found out it was 6 oz for $8.00 I decide to pass. The portions are smaller and the prices are higher and this was not worth the money

Roger G.

Yelp
Fabulous!!! This market has what is caught fresh each day. I love fresh swordfish and it's the best here. So is the lobster roll!! Fresh, plain and sweet; not all doctored up like most places do. This is how it used to be and I hope it never changes.

Briana L.

Yelp
I've passed this place many times on my way to the beach and always see it packed. And now that I've had it, I don't understand why. I had pretty high hopes for this place because of the positive reviews and the Phantom Gourmet awards for their fried clams. Everything was just bad. I ordered many lobster rolls that ended up being on McDonald like buns, a few clam chowders that are 90% potato and barely any soup (didn't even taste like clam chowder, just potatoes), and a fried clam plate where there was only 3 clams with bellies (who had a very weird not fresh briney flavor), thick dough and soggy fries. This all totaled to $142 of disappointment. The only thing that I even liked were the lays chips and pickles that came with the lobster rolls. I'm really disappointed and honestly next time I'll just try something that's overpriced at the beach.

Shana S.

Yelp
Friendly folks here. I like the leave a book take a book, idea. The food wasn't horrible. Filled a hole.

Robert E.

Yelp
From Mother's Day I ordered the medium fried scallops. They were perfect. 10 minutes to pick up. They were delicious sea fresh. Tartar sauce was delectable as always. We have been coming here for 30 years and they never disappoint whatever you order. That's the reason why there is a line.

Tracey A.

Yelp
If you think I'd complain about somebody buying me fresh steamed lobster you don't know me very well. If you think I'd mind when someone buys 4 lobsters for a party of 3 then uses the spare to make me a lobster omelet the following morning you don't know me at all. HLP steams up lobsters to order which is a service that'd be dangerous if I lived any closer. Give them 2 hours notice, let them know what time you'll be by, and your lobsters will be waiting for you, fresh from the steamer. After touring the town and its nearby neighbors we swung by HLP and departed with our order and were enjoying it from the comfort of home mere minutes later. It was delicious. Something about steaming fresh lobster and having it ready when planned seems like a very low bar to scale. For this reason you should also know about the Clam Strips. My friends had the forethought to leave HLP not just with lobster but also with a large order of fried Clam Strips which I believe to be a higher threshold to master. Deep frying anything well requires more art than operating a steamer and it's here that HLP shined particularly bright. The clam strips were something magnificent the likes of which I've never ever had in California. It's yelp cliche to define a food as crack but if any food item deserves the honorific it's these Clam Strips. They're crunchy and fried to perfection and as addictive as... wait for it... crack. The fry job was so well executed and the order so sizable that refrigerating the leftovers for the night resulted in no degradation of quality. You can pick up the next day where you left off last night. Live large; they're worth it. HLP is a combo seafood market and seafood shack and though I only sampled what I described above I have no problem highly recommending them for both of those menu items. I was happy not to have had to whip out my debit card but even if I had I'd not regret using it for this lobster and those Clam Strips.

David R.

Yelp
The lobster Pound in Hingham is absolutely amazing I was on my way home from Nantasket beach and I had to stop the scallops are so big and juicy and fried so elegantly that they actually melt in your mouth it's amazing what the taste is you have to come and try them everything else is also fantastic but the scallops Are like no other in the greater Boston area they are a must try. As for the location be careful there's only about 10 parking spots right on a fast Road it's a tiny small almost shack like fish market looking building if you have to drive for a few miles it's well worth the time just come on down and try something you will not be sorry

Howie B.

Yelp
Have been coming here since I was a little boy on our way to Nantasket. Now I bring my boys to enjoy the outstanding fried foods served up at Hingham Lobster Pound. This quaint roadside shack serves up excellent fried food. Their fried haddock plate offers a large portion of moist, tender, flaky and delicious fish. The batter is crisp and has a slight sweetness to it. The fries are excellent crispy crinkle cut. Their cole slaw has varied over the years - some years good and some not so good, often tasting as if commercially-produced. On this visit was finely chopped and very tasty - as if homemade. Son #1 had the fried clams, which are among the best we've found anywhere. The onion rings are very good as well, if slightly heavy. Son #2, who does not normally eat fried haddock, tried it and said that "it was much better than he expected!" (finally expanding his culinary horizons! :-) While waiting for your order you can enjoy the historic photos and ephemera from defunct restaurants and the old Paragon Park. So glad the Lobster Pound is back open for the season and is still here for generations (and our 3rd generation!) to enjoy!

Coco S.

Yelp
All set with the lobster pound. Dry lobster on a burger bun. NOT! 15.00 wasted. Never again!

Gene W.

Yelp
We have been regular customers at HLP for 25 years our experience last night was so disappointing that we will not be returning. We each had haddock sandwiches that were terrible. Over cooked, dried out fish on a overly buttered toasted roll (the butter may have been left out too long also) made for a pungent disaster. I also got the clam chowder which was like wallpaper paste. Not happy at all about our experience. Like I'd like my time and money back. Very disappointing to say the least.

Sandy T.

Yelp
Placed a takeout order yesterday. Seafood plate. Worst fried seafood I've had. Clams were all neck and black bellies. Looked rotten. Inedible so tough. Scallops were overcooked and like rubber. Onion rings were all skins. Never again and too bad cause years ago this place was great

Susan S.

Yelp
We have eaten at the Lobster Pound for over 50 years. Had fried clams, fried scallops and onion rings, on Saturday. All the food was overcooked. Breading had fallen off of scallops before we took them out of the bag. Scallops were very small and tough. Clams were also tough. Onion rings were also a disappointment. Breading was too heavy. What is happening! Maybe early in season. Please make sure you do better job of quality control.

moe s.

Yelp
By far, the BEST fried clams I've ever had. I don't know what is in their batter, but it's magic! All of their sandwiches are on grilled burger rolls too. They also have fried oysters that I can't wait to try.

Herr K.

Yelp
C'mon. This is incredible. Lobsters. Amazing fried food. Great portions of fish. Delicate fried clams. Jumbo fried shrimp. It was soooooo good! I know this place is well-known, so I'm not telling anyone anything new, but... my compliments to the chef! I have been to other, similar place on Cape Cod, and the quantity, quality, and price here are superior.

D H.

Yelp
Stopped to get fish fry to go. Quick and solid! Not the best in the area, but still worth a stop

Bill L.

Yelp
Have loved this place in the past. The problem for me is that it has just become to Hit or miss.. i hate to say it.. but it can be phenomenal seafood and then awful. Granted that the place has just recently opened, but by now.. it still should have been of a much much higher quality . Ok ... fried haddock was dramatically over cooked to the point of it being a dark brown hardened crust instead of a golden batter. This was so bad that it never should have been served and it was thrown out immediately Very depressing... the fried scallops were covered in grease and very small and the batter just completely falls off the scallop. Very disappointed... the star of the show was the always fabulous crinkle cut fries... even though Its the last thing i was interested in here. Will try again mid summer and update if better But this was just horrendous

Marcel A.

Yelp
Word of advice if your a whole belly clam enthusiasts or lover yes your definitely going to want to avoid this place or you will be extremely unsatisfied. The only thing nice about Thai place was the young gal who took my order of it weren't I would give a 0 rating. Large clam they told me oh will you mind if the belly's are kinda small they told me which I was ok with. $41.99 later I get my order and with about 8 claims in it & 95% clam strips. This place is a joke it reminded me of the popcorn chicken sold at KFC. If you want some delicious seafood head to Genes Seafood in Fairhaven. Entire seafood platter with whole belly clam, fries Excellent size scallops, fried shrimp & 2 good size pieces of fish for about $35.00 couldn't even eat it all if I tried. I would never on a million years ever go back to this place. How this place is in business is mind boggling

Robert R.

Yelp
Update 2019. So this is our 3rd time any LB, must be OK for 3 visits and we were in the Fried Haddock mood tonight. Ordered again 2 large fried Haddock and 2 fried shrimp. First the good news. The fried shrimp is still solid 4 a winner. The bad news, the Haddock, a very nice size, was soggy and it was not very coated , like supper thin. That might be OK for many, but if your going to sacrifice going for fried, I like a crispy ( maybe even Panko) not a barely fried razor thin crust. So I am think am down grading them on Fried Haddock to a 2-2.5 at best. A Wallburgers fried haddock sandwich would have suited me better. Their Coleslaw continues to rank a 1.. Awful. I might go back to try a lobster roll , but I think I'll try other places for the Fried Haddock.

Nathalie B.

Yelp
I was craving some gish and chips especial after visiting the beach. We stop and placed a fish a chip order. I enjoy the plate it was the right amount and the tater sauce was delicious. I wish they added a little more salt but over all it was good. It cured my craving

K M.

Yelp
Lobster was so fresh! Huge portions and staff were extremely nice!! Will definitely be going back

Damien S.

Yelp
Assigning a deserved two stars, but with a heavy heart. It's the kind of place where we all want to be regulars. Narrow, cramped, take away with oh-so-intimate benches. The quarter board for charitable donations. A Good & Plenty candy jar with all the jewels stuck together. All the old people. The charm is undeniable. It's the food that needs something extra. And perhaps we just went with the wrong dishes, although it's my belief that any lobster pound that serves a stale, flavorless lobster roll is doing it wrong. Content was there - albeit on a hamburger bun - but the mineral bite was missing, and the meat had a too gummy texture. Attention turned to a broken clam chowder, oily to the max and having me genuinely wonder if they topped the cup with a squeeze of butter flavored popcorn oil. Maybe a half a clam strip in its depths, maybe. Plenty of potato. We swing by the pound on the regular, and judging by other reviews, the fried food is where its at, so I'm not afraid to take a second plunge. But I'll be damned if the first dip in this pool didn't leave me all wet.

Marguerite W.

Yelp
First of all I never write reviews but thought I need to save others from the disappointment of this place. I was hoping for a traditional lobster roll but got one on a Mc Donalds type sesame seed bun, not fun! The lobster role was bland and did not seem fresh. The clam chowder was a gelatinous bowl of what I would call potato soup with a few strands of clams. Finally the cole slaw was so unappetizing as to be inedible. My impression especially on the chowder is that there is a lot of thickener and very little of the elements that make for a well balanced traditional New England clam chowder which should include clams not 4 little thin strands of clams. Perhaps the owner needs to save money on his product but this is not helping, clam chowder should have clams. Other reviews are great vs awful perhaps there is a quality control issue.

Megan O.

Yelp
Opted for the lobster roll with a side of banana fritters. Great hole in the wall. Lobster rolls come on a burger bun. If you like your lobster roll light on the mayo like I do then this is the place for you. Also, prices are decent! $13 for a lobster roll is a great price in my opinion. Banana fritters were delicious and come with syrup for dipping, yum! Will definitely be back. Highly recommend grabbing something there then head down to the harbor to enjoy it on a picnic table. Good date idea for a not too expensive night out!

Rick K.

Yelp
we loved this place and loooked forward to going for dinner. FOund it is now just plain awful, I will never go back. They will be out of business soon no doubt.

Jessica S.

Yelp
We couldn't even get food from here. We called 48 times on the way. The phone was either busy or rang and no one answered. We thought maybe because it's Memorial Day weekend and with social distancing you have to call to order at most restaurants. When we arrived, my father in law went in, and no one came to the window. All of the employees were hanging out out back chatting away. We came here years ago. Didn't love it, but thought we'd give it another shot. Won't make that mistake again!

Tianna T.

Yelp
Seriously such good seafood you can't go wrong. Exactly what you'd expect from a roadside shack (the to-die-for kind). Lobster sandwich is excellent, fried clams are some of the best I've ever had, and the onion rings are hands down the best I've had anywhere. 10/10 I try to go back as often as my wallet will let me!!!!! So good!!

Mark S.

Yelp
I had the clam chowder with my son and it was great the clams were very fresh. The soup was creamy and did have an excellent taste. There is a nice amount of potatoes which I like. We were both very pleased

Danielle L.

Yelp
Not impressed. Service wasn't the best and they serve their lobster rolls on hamburger buns. Wasn't "wowed" with their lobster roll, I've had better.

Linda D.

Yelp
Went here Saturday night as Jakes was packed. 2 cars in lot . Should have read the signs for a Saturday in dead of summer. Ordered 2 fish sandwiches, fries and onion rings. Awful! Took 2 bites and threw it all out. (Even the ketchup tasted off ). Thinking of it now a day later still is disgusting. Sadly , went here a couple years ago and really good....what happened? New owners? I'd like to give 0 stars if I could

Andrea K.

Yelp
They refused to make a lobster role without mayo for me, so I reluctantly just got one with mayo. It was a lame excuse for a lobster roll. It was on a cold, stale hamburger bun. The lobster meat was super shredded and loaded with slimy mayo. It was not good at all. The coke slaw was also watery and gross.

R K.

Yelp
Was great but must be a new cook. Overcooked fish and small portions. What Happened? I am so disappointed in what happened this summer. I don't mind paying to price but now with who is cooking it's awful. HELP I want to come back !

Beth M.

Yelp
Very yummy! A family tradition at this point. My fave is the scallop plate with fries. Or haddock. So good! Root beer in the side :)

Maria T.

Yelp
We are on holidays in Hull. We read all the good reviews and decided to try lobster rolls and fish cakes. The rolls were soggy and small from the cheapest bread rolls possible, and 2 of us had stomach aches after that meal. The fish cakes were over fried. My daughter was quite unwell. It was a pricy disappointment, wasn't worthy 18+ dollars per roll.

Cynthia G.

Yelp
Stopped here on a whim after a walk at World's End. So glad we did! The fried clams and onion rings were phenomenal! So fresh and yummy. We also got the haddock sandwich and some fried shrimp. Everyone raved. I don't write reviews like this very often but this place deserves all five stars and then some.

Person O.

Yelp
My favorite lobster roll, fish and chips and fish sandwich on the South shore. We go here constantly during the on season.

Deborah J.

Yelp
I spent $300 dollars here yesterday ( Thursday Dec19). There are three stars here because the scallops ( large) were absolutely wonderful. I ordered 20 lobsters and after getting them home discovered only 18. The young lady I spoke to on the phone implied that I should have stood over the young lady who waited on us and made sure she was able to count to 10 twice. She further told me the good news was that she hadn't charged me the 50¢ per lobster cooking fee! The fee wasn't mentioned at all. The young lady on the phone offered to get the receipt to show that while I had ordered a large chicken wing what they wrote down was chicken tenders and they were cheaper! Sadly, chicken tenders are not what we ordered. So.... The lesson learned is as follows: 1. Check each order before you leave. 2. Be sure the wait staff can count. 3. If mistakes are made then too bad for you. That said, scallops were great, as were the fries. I'll get what I need to take back with me elsewhere.
