Where to Eat and Party on Halloween 2018 in Portland

"From Friday, October 26 through Sunday, October 28, the industrial urban winery Hip Chicks Do Wine is fulfilling its annual tradition of pairing wines with Halloween candies. $12 gets you five tastes of wines each selected to pair with a piece of classic candy; guests can pay an additional $4 for a taste of port as well. It’s like the adult version of trick-or-treating, without all the door to door wanderings." - Alex Frane

Oh my goodness...what an amazing gem nestled in the industrial district of Portland! I had the great opportunity to visit Hip Chicks Do Wine for a special curated wine tasting with colleagues from across the country. There was a general and strong consensus: - The venue is amazing! - The owners are incredibly passionate and knowledgeable! - The wine was some of the best we had ever had (ESPECIALLY THE PORT -- my personal favorite) Hip Chicks has their own wine club membership and are generous supporters of other local organizations and events. They offer retail items, including artwork, t-shirts, etc., and of course, their WINE! Be sure to book your very own wine tasting and visit them while in Portland. I know you will enjoy Hip Chicks just as much as we did!

This place is just down the road from us. The flights were fun. There was only one flight option. There were six types of wine as part of the flight, it was a selection of white, rose, red, and sweet wines. We decided to come when it was 90 degrees outside. I do not recommend coming here on a hot day if you are sensitive to heat. The seating is in a covered garage with no AC.

I will start by saying we were doing a wine tasting tour and this was our second stop and we weren't impressed. The guy working there came drop of our wine flight and didn't come check on us. We weren't impressed with any of the wines but we love the sangria.

Google
Had a great time at Sangria Saturday’s! Also purchased a bottle of wine that had a woman that looked like me on it. Made the experience a lot more special.

Google
I love this winery. Simple location with lots of cool events to go to. Good customer service and their port wine is amazing. I tasted it about 5 years ago and I still haven't found a port I like besides theirs. I am happy their port is still available and delicious.

Yelp
I've had their wine for some time, but this was my first time at the mothership. Note it's a little bit tucked behind there, so just follow the signs, and you can't go wrong. My friend and I came for a tasting as part of a holiday market supporting a local nonprofit. The space itself is inviting and clean. I love how they have a wine for everyone really except for maybe no sparkling as far as I can tell. I think my favorites were the malbec and their Rouge red blend as well as the rosé. The skin contact pinot gris also had a nice herbal flavor. I appreciate all they do to support our local community and that they have lots of events. Look forward to coming back soon!

Yelp
This update is based on a recent dinner at Hip Chicks, structured around their Tempranillo releases from multiple years. Spanish inspired food was served to go with, and sometimes include, the featured wine. It's a wonderful thing to have winemakers who take the time to design a meal around their products, passing along ideas on how to best enjoy a nice bottle of wine at home.

Yelp
I had my birthday party here on 3/23/24 and it was amazing. Great service, calm atmosphere, delicious wines. We had the Easter candy pairing with our wine tasting and it was so fun. The wine samples come in these little test tube type things and it's creative. I have been to many tasting rooms and this was the most comfortable, chill place ever. We also ordered some appetizers and those were good too. Zero complaints. We bought a bunch of bottles of wine to take home too.

Yelp
When a business screws up you hope that they do the right thing, but when a customer royally screws up you aren't sure how one will act. I organized my first event recently at my new job. I had briefly been a wine club member at Hips Chicks. I joined pre-Covid as so many of their events sounded fun. I stopped my membership once events stopped being a thing anymore. I noticed on their website they started up again and saw they had a Halloween Candy Wine Parining Event. I inquired through their website, about hosting an event at my work. Gloria responded immediatley and was super communicative everytime I reached out to her. I wanted to organize two different events. Gloria told me they could deliver kits in the morning the day of each event. The first date, all I arrived on time, and was super impressed by the presentation, and how easy it was to host the event. Everyone loved it. The day of the second event arrived, and mid-afternoon i realized my kits had not been delivered. I went back to check my email and noticed I had given Gloria the wrong date. I was besides myself. It was a Tuesday, and the winery was closed. I reach out to every email listed on their website, but I was frantic and needed a response ASAP. I then saw a link to their FB page and sent a message through there explaining what happened. With in seconds the owner responded, and within in 15 minutes my kits were at my door. I can't express how grateful I truely was. I did not want to reschedule the event and have to admit my failure. They totally saved my booty. They are the epitome of what good custmer service is all about. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Thank you!

Yelp
Awesome spot in Sellwood. In the industrial area, and thankfully they had signs to direct you. Owners were good people willing to share their history. They will be celebrating 20 years! I did a succulent pot oil diffuser class and it was so worth it! Nothing better than girls time while enjoying a bottle of wine!

Yelp
Very cool wine tasting experience in a very random area of Portland. Tucked away among a bunch of warehouses is an unexpectedly cute little urban winery that does really fun tastings on the weekend. $20 for 5 tastings and they had lots of fun snacks on the menu as well. While we were tasting, one of the owners stopped by every table and gave people some fresh grapes to taste. They were the grapes that were being processed for wine that very day! Really cool.
google avatar

Jeremy C.

Yelp
What a great place! Excellent wine, good people, lovely bites to eat. They have a wine club with various options and regular wine club parties that are always enjoyable.

Jalna A A.

Yelp
My daughter and I attended the Sangria tasting event on Saturday. We were so excited for this adventure. We got there and there only a few tables filled which made me question why we needed to make reservations. We were excited to taste the Sangria. What we got was six test tubes that literally held a table soon each of three of their wines and three Sangrias. I have been wine tasting for years, Never have I received a test tube with literally a tablespoon of a wine to sample. How do you charge $20 for 6 tables of Liquid? I could drag this out, but will simply say ALL of the wines and sangrias were horrible! Strong/bitter after tastes and the Sangrias were an insult to Sangria for sure. A lot of fruit purée, grossly sweet, maybe some limeade and no fresh fruit - a signature of great sangria. I'm 60; I've been drinking wine and planning events at wineries for 30 years- I worked in the Napa Valley for five years. I love wine and I don't have to drink expensive wine, it just needs to be good. This experience was a HUGE disappointment. I was introduced to Hip Chicks wines about 10 years ago. Back then I liked what I had tried, but it was never a regular in my rotation so I was excited to rediscover it. Sadly, it was an EPIC fail. I am all about supporting women in business for sure- first and foremost, but As a consumer I expect a lot and sadly this experience and the quality of the product did not deliver.

Yelp
Best winery in town! Love the themed events and all the hospitality. Delicious snacks too.

Yelp
Kind of off the beaten path in a west house style district. They are so kind. Everyone that works there is amazing. I did the wine flight. I feel it's the best way to get to know the wines and ordered the apple Brie walnut with honey flatbread. I couldn't have been happier. The food is so good as was the wine. They do not have a vineyard but the grapes they use are purchased from local growers. I was there for sip and shop because I've loved these two things for a long time. It's a small market but the vendors are all amazing. The booths offered flowers, jewelry, pound cake (I bought raspberry), a photographer (yes you can have your portrait taken and from the samples posted she's really good), a booth with cards and stickers, and my favorite (because of the Disneyland connection) softest scarfs and infant blankets. I bought the infant blanket for my niece who will have her second boy soon. I should have taken more pics of the shops but I was having to much fun. I can't wait for the next months market. I'm hoping my friend will be able to come with me. Until then here are the pics I did take.

Yelp
Hip Chicks Do Wine hosts the coolest events. From holiday craft shows with great vendors to art nights to hosting a couple wineries. At the craft shows I enjoy slowly drinking a flight of 6 wines while chatting with vendors and purchasing gifts. At the last event I decorated my own Christmas cookie. I havent done that in years! The two owners are so chill and cool. I love listening to their descriptions of their wine. They put so much care into every bottle. Hip Chicks Do Wine is a good winery that drives you to come back often for the additional non wine related fun!

Yelp
My friend and I attended the wine and sangria tasting today. Neither of us had ever been here before and loved that it is in an industrial area. We aren't hung up on ambience so that was fine and it was nice to sit outside. The wine and sangria was smooth and very good, we liked every taster we had. My friend also enjoyed the cheese and cracker plate and flatbreads, as well. The servers are very pleasant and efficient and it was a wonderful way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

Yelp
Just went for tasting. I reserved for 1 but al last minute my boyfriend and a friend were able to join - they where so accommodating! Val checked us in and helped us throughout our time. She is great!!! Very attentive! The Tempranillo and Loud and Proud red wines were good!! We enjoyed our time! Support this winery!!

Corrie J.

Yelp
Didn't even know that urban wineries are a thing til I met the hip chicks. The owners work really hard to create excellent wines, but also fun events, amazing pairings, and interesting snacks.
google avatar

Sebastian K.

Yelp
I'm not impressed with this place at all. I will give credit where credit is due, the service was very friendly and accommodating. Outside of that, however, my experience was a huge disappointment. My wife and I went here to kill some time when getting the car serviced, and this was one of the closest places to the garage. We originally wanted to go to Gigantic but since they wouldn't be open for a couple more hours, we went here instead. The wine is very overpriced. Ten dollars a glass and it tastes like typical table wine. Five to six dollars a glass would be reasonable for the quality. The location is also way off the beaten track, with no attempt to create ambience. It felt just like what it is, a big sketchy warehouse. Do yourself a favor and just go to Grocery Outlet, buy a $5 bottle of wine, go to an empty warehouse and enjoy. You'll save money and have a more interesting experience.
google avatar

LadyPeru P.

Yelp
Hopefully, this was just my taste. I bought 3 bottles of wine ($75 or so). I am on my second to taste and so far disappointed . The place was modern, the staff was super friendly. Perhaps I am just comparing it to California wines too much. Please try it before judging... we all differ in taste.

Kathleen C.

Yelp
This place is so fun! Its cute and the sangrias are lovely! The owner served us herself and made our experience wonderful. I would highly suggest visiting.

Yelp
They are hip and friendly chicks indeed. But, the chicks don't do wine all that well. The tasting room is hip and a cool venue for tasting and for events. I checked them out for the wine and chocolate tasting event The Hip Chicks hosted on February 12th and 13th, 2011, featuring chocolates by Cocoa Velvet Chocolates. To start we had a 2007 Sangiovese paired with a Lavender Earl Gray dark Chocolate. The wine on its own was nothing special. I had to have the chocolate with it to be able to sip and appreciate it. In fact, none of the wines wowed me and I couldn't bring myself to buy a bottle or even a full glass of anything. I noticed the pricing of the wines were not unreasonable at around $16.00 for the Sangiovese to $26.00 for a Malbec. I will spend that much for good wine on occasion. But these are just not that good. I like the concept of having a cool tasting room here in the city that hosts fun and interesting events like the chocolate tasting event. I just hope the wine making part of their endeavor improves.
google avatar

Amber R.

Yelp
I have been wanting to check this place out for a long time. So, I and a small group went to their wine and chocolate pairing event. It was, ok. All in the group felt pretty middle of the road about the wine. Please keep in mind though that taste is subjective and that's just how we felt. Of the basic tasting, the wine bunny and the syrah were the ones that stood out and we all agreed were really pretty good. The rest were, meh--neither good nor terrible. The chocolate pairing was nice--the cardamom sesame truffle was very interesting. Lastly, I want to mention the environment. We were not prepared for how cold the location was. They had space heaters trying to heat up the place but it was terribly cold and uncomfortable. We rushed through our tasting so that we could go get warm. While this wouldn't be an issue during the summer and maybe early fall, during the winter and early spring I would recommend wearing warm layers when heading there for a tasting.

Becky S.

Yelp
We had searched for local wineries in the Portland area. We knew about McMinnville but we wanted a smaller winery. We were NOT disappointed! We had a reservation to taste their wines and we loved their tasting room. Laurie was friendly and inviting. Loved the test tube tastes of their amazing wine! These women not only make amazing wines but they create a positive and memorable experience. The store has so many cool items. We joined their wine club because the wines are THAT good!!! Highly recommend!!!
google avatar

Kristine Y.

Yelp
Dropped in on their vday event. Great crew serving fun wines with paired chocolates. Really enjoy this place! Did not buy tickets ahead and they were happy to accommodate us. Thanks! Give this spot a go.

Yelp
One of my most favorite places to go for wine! The owners are always warm and friendly...we feel like family every time we stop in. Not to mention their wine is well priced and beyond yummy. Total win! Highly recommended

Yelp
We went there on a whim and the wine was definitely a disappointment. We left before even finishing our flight

Yelp
If you want the authentic Portland experience then Hip Chicks Do Wine should be first on your list! Yes, it's funky a little treasure tucked deep in an industrial area and that is the adventurous beauty of it. They have a quaint tasting area and a warm welcome. The wine is made in small batches, which is very appealing to me. You can also drop in for a wide variety of events, such as a unique boutique shopping experience that is held from time to time with local artists, yoga and wine, pop and paint and other fun events. I highly recommend a stop here if you're looking for something other than the run of the mill, standard wine experience. So grab some friends and head out for a unique and one of a kind wine tasting outing!

Kathy G.

Yelp
I go here every couple of weeks with my daughter, son-in-law, and twenty something grandson. We really enjoy the wine pairings, sangria, and small plates of appetizers. They are very friendly and their wines are lovely. Highly recommend visiting.

Yelp
Sorry to be a buzzkill, but shouldn't a winery serve wine that's at least somewhat drinkable? I spent $13 to try 9 of their varietals and none were worth a second look. I'm not a snob here, I enjoy all price levels of wines, but the reds were truly bitter and "off". The $13 Blush? I think Beringer makes a "white zin" that tastes exactly like this, and it's $3.99. Here's the thing: I want them to do well because I support local businesses. Great concept, cute bottle labels, great website and logos.... I love the name. It implies that they are able to compete with larger wineries. But great marketing is not enough for them to survive. I hope they can get the help and expertise they need to produce some good wine. Part of running a business is realizing where your weaknesses lie, and then hiring good people to compensate for them. Some good wine-making advice is needed here, and stat.

Yelp
Had a great tasting today. Leila was amazing. Told us a lot about each wine and we had a great time. Bought three bottles to take home. And a club membership form! Love!

Yelp
My friend and I went to Hip Chicks Do Wine today for their Halloween Candy and Wine Pairing. It was bit hard to find, but the signs help! When we arrived we went up to the counter and the attendant informed us to find a table and she would be right with us. She was not right with us, but she was the only person serving so I understand. Finally we got our wines and realized one was missing, so she rectified that. Each wine taste was paired with a small piece of candy. The candy paired very well with the wine. My only complaint besides the slow service is that the "tastes" were the smallest tastes I have ever had in my 7 legal years. I think throughout the whole tasting I had less a half glass of wine. I don't expect any extras, as I work at a bar as well but this was awful. It was enough wine to literally touch it to your tongue and get a tiny sip! I am sad because this was my first experience and I was beyond excited. I can't say whether I will be back or not.
google avatar

Jennifer C.

Yelp
The owners are reason enough to love this place, but everything else is great, too. I've been to several events and tasted many (maybe TOO many) of the drinks and food, and I haven't been disappointed by any of it.

Diane B.

Yelp
I have been a wine club member for years. They always go above and beyond in their service. The events always have the yummiest food. I love that they are providing home delivery, a plus in these pandemic times. The sagria flavors are DELICIOUS!!!
google avatar

Emily I.

Yelp
If you're from California, DO NOT COME HERE. The wine was not good. I might even say terrible. After the first sip of each taste, the wine tasted worse, and we ended up taking it like a shot. It was on a list of the best wineries in Portland, and one of the only one open daily. Don't be fooled - you'll feel the sugar hangover set in before you walk out the door. The girl working was really nice and knowledgeable about the wine, but that was the only redeeming feature.
google avatar

Shaili P.

Yelp
Came here for a wine tasting with a few of my girlfriends when we were visiting Portland. Couldn't be happier that we chose this place! For young women who have little experience in wine tasting, this is the perfect venue to learn more, feel comfortable, and deepen your appreciation for wine. The owner was so warm, friendly, and really made us feel at home. Its truly a very unique, cozy, and wonderful place. The wines were also great - I'd highly recommend the Red Zinfandel, Port, and any of the Sangrias. Definitely coming back and telling my friends all about this place!
google avatar

Mark P.

Yelp
This is an interesting industrial space that looks as though it were once a mechanic's garage or something prior to becoming a Winery. That is, if you can get to it. There are many different twists and turns, so watch out for all the 4 or 5 sandwich boards leading the way. GPS will not get you directly to the Winery. It's a little confusing. Once inside it had an urban/rustic feel to it with all the casks and equipment right there in the corner of the building. Also, if you go in the cooler months, bring a jacker-- the open space is a little chilly. We went on a Saturday afternoon and it was fairly busy. What I must say is one of the two owners was on staff and she was friendly, doting and informative. The grapes they use are sourced from Oregon and Washington and the wines range in price from 18-42 dollars, with choices in all price ranges. They also offer a wine flight for $12

David R.

Yelp
All of their websites say they are open took uber out here to find that they are closed maybe they should update their websites very disappointed
google avatar

Amelia K.

Yelp
Waaay over priced. I'm totally cool with paying for quality, but the wine they served for ten bucks a glass was a glorified table wine. I resent paying such a large markup for wine that should have been 5-6 a glass. This place is extremely difficult to find, has a shoddy selection and is housed in what amounts to a meat locker. The chairs are crappy folding chairs (look like they were bought from Freddie's or something) and the decor is tacky and amateurish. Our service was good, but the inflated price tag and lack of ambiance was what did it for me. Just go to Gigantic up the street.
google avatar

Tallie A.

Yelp
The best experience t/b hd here is just that - the experience of it all. We were nt overly impressed w/Hip wines. And, nooo, it's NOT because we're Californians. We found their wines t/b either bland or on an extreme sugar high. No thank you - already there all by our own means. I wouldn't write Hip Chicks off tho. I'd definitely gv it another go...maybe nxt yr.
google avatar

Sarah C.

Yelp
I have been a wine club member here for close to a year now - what a total steal. Not only do you get a couple of bottles of great wine very other month, you also get invites to all kinds of events. There are member only events at no costs and you can bring a few friends. You get to taste a wide range of their wines while munching on great snacks. My friends all ask to be invited back again and several have joined the club on the spot. The non-member events are a great way to check out what they have to offer and have a really good time.
google avatar

Jenn C.

Yelp
Love love love this winery! Such a cool atmosphere, surrounded by tons of barrels of delicious wine! They are decently priced, and have wine club memberships(if I wasn't already a member elsewhere I would prob sign up) the drop dead red blend is the absolute best!
google avatar

Joe S.

Yelp
God awful, wife spat saying tasted like "hippy armpit hair" (not sure how she knows). She said I'm too polite for having choked it down and smiling at them. With so many great ones just an hour east I can't imagine why to go here.
google avatar

Yelp
After we walked and walked and walked the backstreets of some industrial neighborhood, we finally arrived at Hip Chicks. It was a great spot out in the middle of nowhere. The wine tasting was pretty cool and they had some cute gifts with their various graphics from their bottles.. all very girly, all very cool. Wines aren't as memorable.. but I don't remember hating any either. However, when we leave a tasting with only a rosé, then that means nothing else blew my skirt up.
google avatar

Yelp
Hip Chicks Do Wine is a local treasure! I have been here for wine tasting several times and always enjoyed it. The staff are really friendly and helpful and enjoy answering questions about their products. I always end up purchasing a few bottles on my way out. Other products include t-shirts, hoodies, and stickers. It is indeed in a strange location. Not bad, just....circuitous. If I didn't have a GPS I might have needed to call for directions. But it adds to the ambiance, it makes you feel like you earned it, or even discovered a secret place. Recently I attended a tasting where they had several artisan vendors displaying their products. This was an added bonus, as the artists had some fantastic things there to look at while sipping the wine. Amazing snacks as well. Looking forward to my next trip to the Hip Chicks.

Yelp
Molly is awesome! She is super knowledgeable and delightful! We are enjoying the PDX urban wineries tour. My favorite is the belly button.
google avatar

Eric R.

Yelp
Very cool urban vibe in this fun winery in my neighborhood! The entrance is a bit off the beaten path in the back of a warehouse complex, but when you walk in the atmosphere is great, the wines were tasty (I liked some wines from styles I don't typically enjoy), and the staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. Definitely worth a stop in for a tasting, and maybe a bottle or two to take home.

K D.

Yelp
I know taste is subjective, but honestly surprised that anyone would be disappointed with the wine selection here. My husband and I visit wineries and distilleries quite often, especially while traveling, and this winery stood out to me. It was unique to me. I LOVED every single wine I tasted and we had a really hard time choosing which two bottles we wanted to buy. My husband despises sweet wines and was surprised by how much he enjoyed them. He bought a bottle of the Tiernan Connor rose, the only rose he has ever enjoyed. The owners are also super nice people and provided great customer service.
google avatar

Kemi A.

Yelp
Went here during one of their wine tasting events and ended up getting two bottles! The wine is good, nothing extraordinary about it, but a pretty good deal. Try their alcohol infused chocolate, it's to die for!
google avatar

Amy P.

Yelp
I sought out this winery after having Drop Dead Red at a friends home. I was obviously a Magpie in another life, because shiney, sparkly things catch my eye. The labels for these bottles totally catch your eye and are fun! This urban winery is a fun stop when showing friends from out of town around. The wine makers are always around to explain the flavors, inspirations and processes that go into their wine making. They quite often have events, so check to see what's going on each month. There are live bands, gourmet food and the likes. All in all, a good time, and bonus- their wine is affordable! Warning- Not for the wine snob!!

Terra B.

Yelp
Attended a BRO event here. What a gorgeous little Oasis in the middleOf South East. Will definitely being coming back.
google avatar

Jeffrey L.

Yelp
Long live the urban wine movement! It is such a relief to have quality wine without any pretension. Our pourer, Steph was very attentive without being pushy, and seamlessly wove together informative narrative with rapid refills. In an industrial area, but not as hard to find as a winery in the country, since they've got more signs than a billboard convention. Looking forward to going to one of their many events
google avatar

Yelp
These Local Gals are top Notch and know how to create wonderful wines! Also have a great tasting room and support Local in events, businesses and charities! Love em. shelley
