Hippo Grill debuts Korean barbecue in a to-go box | Eater Vegas

"A newcomer that adapts the cook-to-order Korean barbecue concept into a takeout-focused, self-described Korean spin on a bento box, occupying the former Subway spot in Concorde Plaza at Jones and Warm Springs. With no dine-in seating, the compact menu centers on grilled proteins cooked to order — barbecue-marinated chicken thighs, pork shoulder butt, spicy pork belly, thinly sliced wagyu beef, and galbi short ribs — served in upgraded to-go platters. Platters can be paired with a range of side dishes such as kimchi, fish cakes, japchae, Korean rolled omelets, and seaweed salad, and the appetizer selection includes fried squid, bulgogi fries, and fried mandoo. Open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m." - Bradley Martin

Staff was hostile for no reason. I called to place an order for pickup, and the staff member said, “UHHH, we don’t do phone orders. We never have,” in a RUDE tone. As a first-time customer, I couldn’t have possibly known that. I then asked, “Okay, do I just come in to order?” and he said, “Ummmmmm yeah, I mean I guess? Or you can use one of those delivery websites?” The end of that response got cut off and was choppy, so I asked if he could repeat it, and he loudly said, “ONE OF THOSE DELIVERY WEBSITES? LIKE DOORDASH, POSTMATES?” Safe to say, this interaction turned me away, and I went to Jin’s Korean BBQ instead, even though it was further out of the way. At least the staff who answered the phone there was kind. The staff member at Hippo could’ve kindly said something like, “Oh, I’m sorry, we don’t accept phone orders, but you can place a pickup order through one of those delivery websites, like Postmates or DoorDash.” It’s unfortunate that I never even got to try your food because the customer service was so off-putting. If this wasn’t the owner who answered the phone, your staff is losing you business with their attitude. It costs nothing to be kind, and a little politeness goes a long way—especially for first-time customers.

Best Korean takeout in town – hands down! I’ve been a regular at Hippo Grill for years now, and every single order is a flavor explosion. Portions are generous, prices are fair, and the food travels like a champ – still piping hot and fresh by the time I get home. The staff is always friendly over the phone, and pickup is a breeze. If you’re craving authentic Korean flavors without the sit-down hassle, this is your spot. 5 stars isn’t enough! 🇰🇷🍱

A friend shared with me that this is his go to for good quality and generous portion Korean BBQ food to go. I was not disappointed! The prices were fair to good! The choices for the sides were excellent, as I enjoy the sides as much as the main dish. I ordered the meat Jin and Korean fried chicken and am looking forward to eating that it with my wife! It’s located across town in the far south and I’m in the far north, so I was glad that I had plans that had me on this side of town. Definitely worth checking this place out and deciding for yourself. I can see myself eating here in the future!

Google
The food was OK. Meat Jun and spicy pork belly were really good. The raw garlic in the garlic shrimp was really harsh, and IMHO ruined the perfectly cooked shrimp. The mandu was deliciously crispy and tender at the same time. Service could use some help. The lady behind the counter seemed overwhelmed and borderline rude. Granted, it looked like she was there handling the front counter by herself during the lunch rush. I guess I would be grouchy too, but it is a business, and customer service is expected. Large portions. Will try again and hopefully, the lady has some help and a better day.

Google
Greeted right away. The service was great. Portions are huge and have lots of choices for sides. Everything cooked to go so food is fresh. Make sure to be hungry cause the plate won't disappoint!

Google
its a little hole in the wall korean spot..no chairs just strictly takeout. you choose your meats (bbq chicken, meatjun, etc) then you pick sides or banchans(4 for a regular plate/2 for minis). if your from hawaii and your kids have a soccer tournament at JAMES REGiONAL PARK this is the spot.

Michael A.

Google
Food was ok, potato salad not good and they dont cut meat jun for you. Short attitudes from the server/cashier. I came in after my family and said I would like to put in an order as well and I received an annoyed expression and death stare from the lady as if I tried to go back and serve myself. we wont be back here ever. Probably will try the ramen place next door they’re friendly and the atmosphere in there is warm. And this place is way too expensive

Google
Tried this place twice. Pretty good good, very hearty servings. I’ve only tried a few things: -Meat Jun: first time ever having something like it. -KFC: love it! It’s actually chicken cubes not wings and drums like bonchon but delicious nonetheless. (Pictured) -spicy pork belly: it wasn’t overly spicy so I was able to enjoy it. Good contender as well. (Pictured) This time around, I didn’t get the meat jun. Only complaint is the japchae wasn’t soft. It was almost as if the cold temp hardened it a bit. I’ve ordered in store and through Door Dash. If I remember correctly, there’s nowhere to sit inside to eat. There is plenty of parking in the plaza.

Yelp
This is my go to spot to pick up food when I don't have time to cook. There is a balance of carbs, protein, and veggies, My favorite is the meat Jun- a dish you don't find very often! It's beef thin sliced fried in egg. It comes with an amazing dipping sauce! The portions here are huge- you get protein, rice and 4 sides. I usually pick the fish cake, jap chae, kimchi, and cucumber.

Yelp
This was our first time visiting Hippo Grill. They are very friendly however it is weird that you are not able to sample the sides. We weren't asking to sample all of them just one. They advised they don't do samples. Either way we figured why not let's give it a try. It did not disappoint..... we ordered 2 different mixed plates. Since they don't have tables available they advised they would bring it out once it is done. The overall wait was approximately 15 minutes which isn't bad for good food. The plates had some weight to them to say the least. We had to wait to get home before trying it since they are strictly a take out location but it was still good. Would I say it's the best we've ever had, probably not. Will we be going back anytime soon? Probably not. But if we happen to be on that side of town maybe.

Yelp
I come to this place quite often, because it reminds me of Yummy's back home. It seems like they have new management now because I noticed that the prices of the meal have gone up slightly but the amount of Meat Jun that is given is less; and they cut it now, to make it look like you're getting a lot. The old mini meat jun plate, you'd get 2 slabs of meat and the regular plate you get 4 slabs. Today when I got my plate, I got it cut up and it was equivalent to 2 and a half slabs for a regular. If you're going to raise prices, at least keep the amount of food you give the same. PI still absolutely love the place but that issue was bothering.
google avatar

Brian I.

Yelp
This place reminds me of the Hawaiian style Korean fast food restaurants back home in Hawaii. I was surprised how much food was given for their mini plates. The meat jun was really good and the Korean chicken was good but needed more sauce. Sides were ok.
google avatar

Alexis W.

Yelp
Such a good fast-casual spot for some Korean classics. Service is always friendly. The portions are enough to share and most food is cooked hot and ready when you get there. Definitely try a combo.

Yelp
This is like Subway for Korean grilled food, but the food quality is very high. We have been coming here for a few years now and this review is well past due. First note that this is a takeout only place. You can't dine in. Also, note they will cook your food to order. The food isn't sitting on a hot food line, so be prepared to wait (or you can order online, but they don't take phone orders). The main option is to pick your meat(s): chicken, beef, pork, or shrimp. Then you either get 2 sides (mini) or 4 sides (regular) plus rice. When I was there people two people came in and got minis... I didn't understand.. for a few bucks more you get more food which heats up really well for second or third meals :) The sides are so good here. You have your choice of in house made banchan (e.g., kimchi, bean sprouts, japchae, potatoes, mac salad.. and way more to list... that's what i should've taken a picture of). We've tried a lot of the menu, but my go to is the spicy pork. It's full of flavor and is a lot of meat. Their meat jun is also a great option if you're feeling beef. I will say the times I've had the chicken, I've not been as happy (consider that it's sitting while you get home or somewhere where you can eat so maybe that's it). The service staff is always friendly. This isn't fast food, but it's well worth the wait!

Yelp
Been craving garlic shrimp, and this is the first place in Vegas that really delivered. Not exactly like the ones I had in Hawaii, but the house sauce won me over. I'll be back for sure!

Yelp
I am an absolute fan of Hippo Grill! One of the things I missed after moving here from Hawaiʻi, was the ability to walk into one of the Korean restaurants and walk out with a mixed plate of food and a smile on my face. Hippo Grill has since filled that void. Its a small restaurant where you'd pick up your food and take out to enjoy elsewhere, but totally worth it. Once you pick which plate you would want, I recommend getting the 2 choice combo so you can try a few different dishes as the portions are large! There are many side dishes to choose from after you pick your proteins, I believe 4 choices are the standard for the mixed plate. The Meat Jun is an absolute MUST when ordering - the flavor is so rich and hearty, and their sauce is delicious. Garlic shrimp lives up to its name with just a hint of spice. For sides - always get the potato salad and japchae (Korean glass noodles) The food speaks for itself, but th service is even better. I ran into a couple issues with a double order I made via Uber Eats, and they were so quick to help me over the phone and get things sorted with my pickup order. It took a bit of a run around, but the gentleman that answered the phone made sure we got it right
google avatar

Yelp
Walk up counter only. Plate lunch style No seating. Includes a variety of banchan dishes to choose from. My go-to place when craving for meat jun. Mini plates offered.
google avatar

Weelowie K.

Yelp
We ordered food for pick up and never been here before. I ordered garlic shrimp and Korean chicken. All my sides were great but my potato salad was different from what I was expecting. The garlic shrimp was so good and garlicy. The consistency was also good. They give good portions. Will definitely try again next time.

Yelp
Feed your inner hungry hippo here! Came here on and off and after coming two weeks in a row recently, I got to share the love for Hippo Grill! The portions are huuuuuuge here! They are serving up delicious meals with great value! You can pick between a mini or regular plate at this to-go establishment. The mini comes with 2 sides, while the regular comes with 4 sides. The garlic shrimp has been my go to lately! The sauce reminds me somewhat of a Cajun boil and perfect on rice!! I got the meat jun before and the portion of meat was humongous! Be prepared to wait a little for your food. It is made to order and worth the 10 min wait or so. Happy Hippo eating!!! :)

Yelp
Pricey but a lot of food To be honest, I had to sit here for a while and decide on what to rate this place because it wasn't bad and was just alright. It's like and LnL barbecue place, but Korean style I paid over $30 for a combination meal the Jakob was an extra $12 and it was just OK. I would rather go to an all you can eat barbecue spot then come here. There's no seating so you either so it's only takeout. I can't really rate the service here as they just take your order and then you leave. I will most likely not come back to this place
google avatar

Ceena G.

Yelp
Was looking for short rib and found some of the best I've had in Las Vegas! The portion sizes are out of this world, the service was friendly and fast. Walked in placed my order and was out the door in about 15 to 20 minutes. The food was fresh and Hot! We will be returning very often to try out other dishes.

Yelp
This hit the spot. Meat jun was amazing and the sides too! We cannot wait to go back! Service was stellar and I wish this place success!

Yelp
Well food was all gone before the picture it was very delicious I will be coming back ! Service was fast Cashier lady was really nice
google avatar

Yelp
The food is delicious I got the hippo spicy shrimp and my sides are kimchi cucumbers, seaweed, japchae, and tofu! The worker was very nice, sweet and welcoming. The hippo on the wall and the islands are nice details lol
google avatar

Jamie S.

Yelp
I have been here a few times since their opening and enjoy the place. When they first opened, they were accepting phone orders, but now it seems they don't anymore which is kind of a bummer because the food takes a bit time to cook and there is nowhere inside the store to sit down and wait for the food. Besides that downside, the food is great. I love their spicy pork belly and their regular size is honestly a good portion that it feeds me and my boyfriend. It's also great that you have a variety of sides to choose from. I also enjoy their Fried Mandoo with their sauce. It tastes great and is usually cooked really well. My brother loves the Bulgogi Fries. Itasted has a little kick to it, but their sauce is great. Overall, food and portion size is great. Definitely wished they took phone orders for convenience, but I would recommend if you don't mind waiting!
google avatar

Dani A.

Yelp
Called in an order for pick up! I got a plate with bulgogi and shrimp, everything was delicious! Check them out!
google avatar

Yelp
You get so much food! You get like two meals in one and the price is fair. Highly recommend!
google avatar

Jenn B.

Yelp
Wverything here is amazing and you get so much food for a great price Also everyone there is so kind
google avatar

Benjamin S.

Yelp
This is a to go place FYI. One of my families favorites in the area. We always get the garlic shrimp mild and it's been consistently delicious each time! The sides are also really good. We like the cucumber (must have) and potatoes. But all the sides have been good! Cabbage, pickled radish, corn, you name it! So good! Trust me do not pass on the garlic shrimp here!
google avatar

Ashley C.

Yelp
Price is decent To go place only which kind of sucks Service is always quick & friendly Food takes 10-20 mins but so worth it Definetly a yummys copycat if you've ever been to Hawaii & im so glad they're here! Portions are huge & banchan is always great!!! A must when I'm craving meat jhun!
google avatar

Kimberly D.

Yelp
Ordered take out and had high hopes for Hippo. Ordered Kalbi (galbi) plate and my kalbi was tough and rubbery. Veggies were tasty. Plate is a good sized portion if only it tasted better!
google avatar

Fazle H.

Yelp
3 stars for fast service and the owner was very accommodating since I was in a rush and the perks ahead of me placed a big order. The issue was that the broccoli bahnchon was very salty and the short ribs were thin and over cooked. Some of the pieces were burnt and bitter. It might have been one off since the cook just got hit with a large order and needed to prepare mine quickly.
google avatar

Tzk C.

Yelp
Give a big shout out to Mason, chef Erickson, and the team! First time here, i came in by myself around 2:30 pm for a quick stop and there were no wait. The menu is on the screen tv, simple, small, and easy to read. I order korean fried chicken with garlic sauce with sesame seed, korean mando dumplings, and galbi with side item, kimchi, fish cake, jap che, and broccoli for take out. Food size is huge, fresh, and tasty. They maded everything on the spot. The place is nice, small, and clean. I definitely recommended and will be back with family and friends!
google avatar

Yelp
I've had Hippo Grill bookmarked for a little bit and after my husband's friend recommended it we decided to finally try it. Inside is small, it's basically just a counter and there's nowhere to sit. All the sides are displayed cafeteria style and as soon as I saw all their lovely deliciousness I knew we made a good choice. My son and I shared the friend chicken, which was crunchy outside and juicy inside. We both liked it. My husband ordered bulgogi beef and shrimp. He liked the beef but thought the shrimp was spicy even though he ordered mild. What really stole the show were all the sides though. I ordered kimichi cucumbers, bean sprout salad, pickled radishes and Mac salad and loved all of them. My husband also had the corn and cabbage salad which were delicious and the sweet potato fries were awesome. Portions were big too and the woman at the counter packed everything carefully and with thought, venting the fried chicken so it wouldn't get soggy. We will definitely be going back.
google avatar

Jen C.

Yelp
Upon arrival, the restaurant is clean and service is inviting. It is a Panda Express style where there are different types of meals. The prices are based on the cost of the entree, which comes with brown or white rice and the number of sides. Their menu offers most classics of Korean bbq at an affordable price for the portion size. They are also incredibly allergy friendly and confirm multiple times if you are okay with something if you mention it. They also offer a variety of canned beverages for offer, which includes Korean and Hawaiian so there is something for everyone. With regards to the food, the sides are all cold but do pack nice flavor and texture. I got the bulgogi, which was pretty plentiful and flavorful over rice for $20. I would definitely return to this spot for a different item in the future as depending on how much you eat. You will probably have leftovers potentially.
google avatar

He Buys Me Food A.

Yelp
Seriously? Thirty-six bucks for the food alone, before tax, fees, and tip for delivert?! Even worse, the kitchen sent out burnt food, and someone in the front actually *packaged* that for a customer! It was like rubber, tasted bitter--total waste of good meat.
google avatar

Rhonelee S.

Yelp
Being from Hawaii, finding a legit meat jun plate was a journey.. but this place is pretty close to making it just like the aunties do in Hawaii. I usually order the mixed plate where you get a choice of 2 entrees, rice, and 4 side dishes. The meat jun is tender with just the right amount of crispy edges, and the dipping sauce tastes homemade. Their kimchi and japchae sides really round out the whole plate and give it that comforting, local-style feel.
google avatar

Steph S.

Yelp
HUUGE portions. I got the regular chicken and fried chicken. It came out to $36. The chicken is so tender. The veggies are fresh! You pick your protein and certain proteins are more than the other. I could only finish half of the food. So worth the money! This place is so underrated. The customer service was awesome.
google avatar

April E.

Yelp
Tried this spot for the first time through a delivery app & it did not disappoint! Shared the spicy garlic shrimp and meat jun mixed plate with the japchae, kimchi, cucumber salad & fish cakes with my husband. All the sides tasted fresh & the spicy garlic shrimp and meat jun were delicious! I always enjoyed the sweetish dipping sauce that it comes with. Will definitely hit this place up again!
google avatar

Wendoline B.

Yelp
The portions are huge! We always get it for lunch, because we know we can eat it for dinner too. The service is quick and it's always super clean.
google avatar

Rox A.

Yelp
Ordered doordash from this place two times now (phone clearly did not eat first lol), and both times were amazing. Their galbi ribs are delicious and my favorite sides have been the fish cake, bean sprout, seaweed, and kimchi cucumbers. They give you enough food for 2-3 servings and the price range is fair for the amount of food. Definitely will try this place again!
google avatar

Ella S.

Yelp
This place is a small place to order and go. Just great for take outs, it has no tables or chairs to sit down and eat. This place can get very busy, so I recommend order in. The food is ALWAYS good, the meats are well seasoned and well cooked. The sides are also always good. Never had a bad experience in this place. This is our go to if we want some Korean without going to a Korean bbq house. The pricing is $$$ for a plate but every penny is worth it and the portions are good to share with. All I can say is I recommend this place, all the food is good. My families favorite is the Kalbi... I also love the spicy shrimp, spicy pork belly etc... it's a must try.
google avatar

Eric B.

Yelp
This was our first time trying this restaurant, and it was an Uber Eats delivery experience. They have a large menu with many of your Korean favorites. I chose their mixed plate with the meat jun (sort of a beef omelette), bulgogi, broccoli, japchae, spicy cucumber, potato salad, and brown rice. The contents are customizable to your preferences. Most of this was truly delicious. The meat jun was outstanding! Wonderfully flavorful egg with thin slices of tender beef. I loved it! The bulgogi was also great - tender meat and not overly sweet. The accompaniments were good as well, although the japchae was not great - sort of slimy and lacking the toasty sesame flavor that's typical. The spicy cucumber was another highlight. Crunchy and perfectly spicy. A small complaint - it might've been easier to eat if they didn't cram most of it into one container. But I'll forgive that since most of the contents were so good! Give this place a try (especially the meat jun), and you won't be disappointed!
google avatar

J S.

Yelp
Okay , well the sides were grate but this shrimp is not it . It's sweet ): unfortunately I thought it was going to be a garlicky salty taste but it taste too sweet. ):
google avatar

Maile J.

Yelp
If you are craving meat jun, this place is the best in Las Vegas! Very authentic like the kind you get in Hawaii!!! They are generous with their portions too! They use quality meat and it is perfectly marinated! Don't even need the sauce, however the sauce is good too!!! For those who moved from da 808-state... this place going bring back memories of Yummy's or Pearl's once you see the selection of sides! They have a good selection of sides and it's all fresh and yummy! Enjoy and as always.... Share da ALOHA!!!
google avatar

Joan A.

Yelp
The food was good! I ordered a mini kalbi plate with sides of corn and pickled radish. The price is worth it in my opinion because of how much they give you. There wasn't any seating inside so it's more for take out. Overall this place is good!
google avatar

John G.

Yelp
This place is so underrated. Their food is very tasty my go to is their meat jun. absolutely delicious and very friendly staff. Like to leave a tip here because they really do earn it. Not to mention I get two meals out of one plate and you just don't get that amount of food anywhere. Highly recommend and saying hi to the lovely lady behind the counter
google avatar

Cara B.

Yelp
This is always my go to place for takeout. The food is always tasty and the portions are generous. We each got 4 sides and I always have a hard time choosing which ones I want because they're all so good. Workers are super efficient and the food gets out to you quickly. The inside is clean and it's very nice as well.
google avatar

Emerson R.

Yelp
Went in for lunch. This place has amazing portions for the price. I can remain full, all through dinner. In fact, I barely took a bite fir dinner that night. The service was accommodating as I asked what a couple of the sides were. Ended up ordering 2x the meatjun along with the 4 sides. You can either choose a regular plate without sides, or the 2 proteins with 4 sides. Both, the prices are good for what they're worth. The place is a take out type of ambiance, which is fine because I don't mind enjoying this type of food at home. Korean chicken, Regular fried chicken, and Meat Jun. All were satisfying, especially the Meat Jun, which is one 9f my favorite things to eat. Give Hippo Korean BBQ a try. Actually, writing this review is making me hungry that I may go tomorrow.
google avatar

Madelyn T.

Yelp
If you're looking for take out Korean bbq, then this is it. The food was great and they weren't stingy with the portions. I got the kalbi and meat Jun combo and it comes with four sides that you choose when ordering. This place does get a little busy so if you're placing a phone order beware because they like to rush you off the phone. I've gone quite a few times where the guy in the front taking the order looks like he's about to have a meltdown because the line is long. Service isn't the greatest, but the food is still good. This is also strictly just a take out joint so keep that in mind if you're planning on dining in.
google avatar

Kate P.

Yelp
I really like the spicy pork and garlic shrimp here. Also lots of varieties for the sides. I used to be able to call in to place a pick up order but I was told they no longer do that due to avoiding mistakes. Somewhat of an inconvenient since it's technically a order and go place with no seatings. The staff have always been nice though.
google avatar

Candyce S.

Yelp
Food is good but is pricey. It starts out a price but for everything you choose is an additional cost. Got two plates and ended costing me almost $70! And what I didn't like is that they won't let you call in your pick up order, so I had to order there and stand and wait for my food. But the customer service was good.
google avatar

John K.

Yelp
My go to place when I come to Vegas! Reasonable price and the food is delicious!! Will be coming here again for my Korean cravings
google avatar

Miss K.

Yelp
Are you from Hawaii? Did you always eat at the Korean BBQ spots in PearlRidge or Ala Moana? You know the one Im talking about. This place right here .... EXACTLY like hawaii. And the portion size is on point! 1 plate = 3 meals. No lie! I would drive the 30 minutes each time for a plate!
google avatar

Chris A.

Yelp
Great place! Bags are heavy like a hippo LOL! Was craving KBBQ one night but we didn't want to have to sit there and cook our own food, then come out smelling like smoke. So what was our next best bet? Why Hippo Grill Korean BBQ of course! The line was out the door when we arrived, literally! No place to sit because Hippo Grill is all takeout. But that line though! We were behind at least 10 people waiting to order. Lovin' the menu. Simple, easy!! What was hard was choosing your banchan! Soo many fresh made banchan daily! About 15 to choose from! Decisions, decisions! For entrees we ordered: -Korean Fried Chicken ($14.95 reg) -Spicy Pork Belly ($15.95 reg) -Vegi Plate ($8.95 reg) Once you put in your entree order, you walk down the line to pick your banchan before it goes to the kitchen. Each entree gives you 4 choices! We got to sample: -Kimchi -Bean Sprout Salad -Korean Seaweed Salad -Tofu -Japchae -Potato Salad -Cucumber Kimchi -Radish Salad -Macaroni Salad -Fish Cake Takes some time for your entrees to cook because they're made to order. Will come out very hot! But it's not only the heat you need to worry about...it's also the weight! They double bag most orders over one plate! They are so darn heavy, they ask you to please support the bottom of the bag when carrying them out! Seriously, when you open the lid of each box there's a ton of food stuffed inside! I got a lil' pump from taking the bag to the car, HA! But wow, Hippo Grill makes a MEAN plate!! Nice fat layer of white rice, a super generous amount of meat, and a glut of glorious banchan! Each entree plate had enough to go on for 2 meals! We got the Vegi Plate so our daughter could just share some of our entree meats from my wife & I! And there was enough to go around! Their Korean Fried Chicken is a staple, if you like fried chicken with a sweet & savory garlic soy sauce - this is a must have! Still nice and crunchy even after we took it home! The Spicy Pork Belly hit the spot for me, fatty, savory, and delicious! Banchan was a home run too, all very fresh with lots of flavor. Their Potato Salad was a standout for me. Gonna have to trek back to Hippo Grill Korean BBQ again soon to try their signature Meat Jun! They were sold out that night! I can't wait!
