8 Best Fried Chicken Restaurants in Charlotte, North Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"Ho Ho Cherry House has been a mainstay in Elizabeth for over 10 years. Specializing in a specific type of Chinese-American comfort food, the cooks here serve up an entire menu of bona fide stoner hits. The crab rangoon in particular is a delight. But the star at Ho Ho Cherry House is crispy scallion chicken — plump chunks of chicken, fried and juicy to levels approaching perfection, tossed with crisp scallion batons in a wicked brown sauce that has flecks of chili sparkling through like glitter." - Timothy DePeugh

Food was flavorless ! Ordered the chicken and garlic sauce, lunch special. Horrendous, way too watery ! Nice atmosphere but the was deplorable. Can we get some authentic food please? The fried rice wasn’t not fried! It was rushed and it tasted like it. Focus on quality instead of money!💵 T

Google
The food is always delicious and they give great portions. Tastes like the chinese food from NYC. I recommend any lo mein with hot sauce.

Google
Although I had low expectations to start, I was underwhelmed and a little disappointed by my first (and probably last) take out order. At least it was quick and well priced!

Google
This place is consistently very good!! I usually get takeout but the inside of the restaurant is very clean. Host is incredibly sweet and personable. Always my go to for Chinese food.

Google
Great sesame chicken, egg roll and fried rice. Food came out quickly, and tasted great. This is what you want from an actual Chinese place.

I’ve eaten a lot of Chinese food in my life. I used to live a half a mile from Chinatown in New York City so I didn’t really have high expectations but this might’ve been one of the worst Chinese takeouts I’ve ever had. I actually didn’t even eat everything. I gave it to my boyfriend. The fried rice was the only thing I could salvage with some soy sauce. I had the HoHo shrimp and I had the cold sesame noodles. Both had absolutely no taste and flavor. The shrimp might’ve been fried at one point and they were gummy. Even the vegetables were bad. How could that even be? It’s sad because I was hoping for a good local place.

Google
The food is really good and the staff is attentive to requests. I highly recommend the chicken teriyaki skewers.

Google
The food was so delicious. The portions are huge. It didn't take long for us to get our food once we ordered it. The waitress was very kind and attentive. We will definitely be going back soon.

Yelp
For Chinese takeout I thought this place was good! My general tso's chicken was delicious. Rice and soup were also great. I wasn't the biggest fan of the dumplings or the Rangoons, but everything else was really good! Will definitely come back when in the mood for Chinese takeout again.

Yelp
I recommend! Quick service, called my order in within 10mins my order was hot and ready. The food was good basic chinese food. I ordered the fried chicken wings and vegetable fried rice. The fried chicken wings are fried good with basic seasoning. Now the vegetable fried rice I found very interesting, which had onions, sprouts egg, and broccoli bits. Which was different from a typical vegetable fried rice that I've had before, but it was good and fresh. I ordered a small egg drop soup, which was hot and delicious! The ambience was clean and it was not very busy when I went to pick up my order great for family dinner or dinner date.

Yelp
My colleague ordered food from Ho Ho Cherry House for us, and I decided to try the hot and sour soup--it was amazing! Definitely hit the spot. I also appreciated the little details, like the fortune cookies' wrapping with roses. Such a nice touch!

Yelp
The boyfriend and I found ourselves in CLT on a Saturday afternoon and wanted something to eat! We were already at Pet Supplies Plus and figured, why not just eat at the Ho Ho Cherry House next door? The name of this place piqued our curiosity and we decided to take a look inside. Very clean interior, oriental themed of course. We were greeted immediately upon entry and our orders were promptly taken. We were the only ones in the restaurant at one o'clock on a Saturday, which is a shame! I appreciated the fact that I was offered the lunch special, even though she could've just given me the more expensive plate and I wouldn't have known the difference. I ordered the General Tso Chicken, Fried Rice, and Eggroll and boyfriend ordered the 6-Wing special with Pork Fried Rice. We sat at our table and our food was brought to us very quickly, I'd say within 5-7 minutes. Portions were HUGE and food was so fresh, it was steaming hot! We left with full bellies and so many leftovers. I really encourage you to give Ho Ho Cherry House a try! They have a huge menu and great service!

Yelp
Hands downs best Chinese spot! I wish I lived closer but it's always worth the drive when I'm craving Chinese.

Yelp
I had their chicken and broccoli lunch special and it was so fresh and delusions. I was surprised at how fresh it was. It was very affordable as well. It came with a spring roll. The service was amazing too. The black lady at the front was so nice and kind. The ambiance is no frills but very clean. Will be bac

Yelp
The food at Ho Ho Cherry House is always fresh, and plentiful. The staff is also very friendly. The freshest Chinese food around!

Yelp
So, my last review was in 2013 and was via delivery. So, after moving in the area and trying it recently Ho Ho Cherry House definitely deserved an update. I ordered Wonton Soup, Shrimp Fried Rice and their Happy Family (I think that is the name) which includes, steak, chicken and shrimp with mixed vegetables in a brown sauce. The Wonton Soup, no flavor, very disappointing. The rice was good, but like the soup the Happy Family had no flavor. The sauce was watered down, the veggies were cooked but the proteins were chewy and the shrimp wasn't cleaned properly. I love Chinese food, and so wanted to like it more being that I can walk to this location, but most likely will drive a little further for the other places that offer better food.

Yelp
Your average hole in the wall Chinese food. Decided to order Chinese on DoorDash and came across this restaurant so I decided to try them out! You get what you pay for and you can't beat the price. I always get general tso chicken. It was crispy and hot when I received it. Some other Chinese places only have the chicken for the entree but here the broccoli is an added bonus that others don't include. You receive an egg roll that is smaller than your usual Chinese food places. Overall, the portion of the chicken and broccoli is bigger than your portion of rice. The taste of the food was fine to me and I would probably order here again.

Yelp
Good food and good service!!! I love how they great you up front and take your orders! This is one of the best Chinese Restaurants I've been to!!!

Yelp
Cherry House has had consistently decent food each time I have ordered take out. Last night I was craving Chinese and decided to get doordash from here because it was free delivery over a certain dollar amount. I orderes a few things and was happily eating in about 30 minutes! Crab rangoons are always a good choice if you enjoy fried goodness. The crab dip on the inside is on the sweeter side, but hits the spot. The veggie egg roll was a little over cooked, but still tasted like it should dipped in sweet and sour sauce. For my main, I ordered the garlic spicy chicken with fried rice. The sauce wasn't that spicy and mixed well with the friend rice. The chicken was a little chewy with some pieces, but overall decent. I plan on trying a few other dishes from here and recommend sticking with your go to Chinese food choices to see how you like it!

Yelp
Stick to the basics here, You'll be great. Adventure out and the quality of food drastically fluctuates. C+ Dining, The amount of One's given on reviews DOESNT do this restaurant justice.

Yelp
We hiked down from the hospital for some house lo mien and kung pow chicken. Yummy, good service.

Yelp
Always delicious and to order. Highly recommend for carryout especially for lunch. Large portions.

Yelp
I have eaten here for years and I've always had great food at a really good price. I'm a big fan of the Singapore noodles.

Yelp
This is our favorite Chinese takeout restaurant in Charlotte and we are suckers for some good Chinese takeout. I have always appreciated how genuinely kind the staff is. I recommend the Crab Rangoon!
google avatar

Brianna T.

Yelp
The food is amazing. I am a fried rice lover and this is one of the best ones that I've tried.

Yelp
I'm guessing we get takeout from Ho Ho Cherry House 3 times a month. Our go-to? Sesame tofu Vegetable fried rice Sa cha tofu Steamed broccoli Flavors and textures are dead on. The vegetable fried rice is REALLY good. Something about the way they cook the onion stands out (in a good way). We never eat all of the sides of white rice, so we save it and end up using leftovers to make our own fried rice later in the week. Takeout food is packaged nicely and the containers are durable and don't often spill in transport.
google avatar

Karina L.

Yelp
One of the most affordable casual Chinese take-out hole in the wall you'll find in Charlotte. You get what you pay for. If you expect more than an average meal, why are you ordering from here? Lol. I never expect more than an average meal from here, yet they always impress me. The amount of food you get for the price is amazing! I always have left overs and turn my lunch order into food for dinner too. They also make food FAST. Like super fast. Shrimp fried rice is to die for Teriyaki Chicken Skewers are AMAZING. Sometimes it's cooked just right but I like it when it's a bit tiny overcooked to get a small crunch and taste from the outer layer. Egg Drop Soup... omg Wonton Soup is good Mongolian Beef DONT GET ME STARTED ON THEIR LUNCH AND DINNER COMBOS! You honestly can't beat the price. This is what Chinese comfort food is. When you're feeling down, sick, or gloomy... order Ho Ho Cherry House. I'm not going to say its going to make you happier, but it's the perfect meal to have that you can take back into bed while binge watching Hulu.

Yelp
Food was burned and nasty! First and last time ordering from them. Gravy wasn't tough and you actually seen the flour in it
google avatar

Jennie P.

Yelp
Ordered on door dash. No utensils and the one thing I could eat with my hands... NO thanks.
google avatar

Kimber C.

Yelp
I've ordered takeout, and I've dined in. I'm a huge fan of the oil free options. Delivery is always quick and the order has thus far, always been correct. Dining in, the staff is super friendly. The food was even better and plentiful. The pu pu platter was decent. The crab Rangoon, not the best, but far from the worst I've had. The meat stick was tasty. I always love spring rolls. My BF got his usual General Tso, and it's better in house bc it's crispier. I got the chicken shrimp house special oil free. It was perfect and the veggies!! Yum!

Yelp
Just being transparent - I was a little hesitant about dining here due to the average review and signage. I haven't had the best Chinese cuisine experience while in Charlotte. Decided to go, as my dad was craving. Ho Ho is clearly more of a takeout place but has a full restaurant with seating. Walked to the counter to get our menu then seated ourselves. We both ordered the all day special #W5 which was 6 chicken wings and shrimp fried rice. Large amount of food for the price of $8.20. Our order arrived quickly but was not very hot. My chicken wings were a tad dry but I really enjoyed my shrimp fried rice. I would honestly say some of the best that I have had in the area. I'm hoping to return again and provide an updated review with a different protein option. If it is tasty, I'd upgrade to 4 starts.

Yelp
Let me start by saying that I am not a regular and that I don't really even eat Chinese food that often. I have, however, recently discovered the shrimp lo mein here at Ho Ho, and I think it's pretty delicious. I also enjoy the spring rolls. Again, I have very little means of comparison and I've only started to venture into Chinese cuisine recently. The parking lot here is shared with the rest of the businesses in the strip center, and is pretty heavily trafficked. Most of the businesses in the shopping center are fairly popular, and some even have their own spaces designated, making parking even more of a challenge. The upside is that most of the spaces turn relatively quickly, as none of the businesses are the type to have customers/clients that loiter for longer periods of time. The restaurant itself delivers, but also has a small dining area inside. They have added mirrors to provide the illusion of a larger space, but it is honestly a bit dizzying to me. Call ahead orders are the best way to go, but they will also take walk-in orders. If you find yourself having to wait for your order, there is a Starbucks just across the street where you can grab a beverage to pass the time. The space is older, but I think it's fairly clean. I like that they are open when most other paces aren't, such as Christmas, which is typical of most Chinese restaurants. I honestly think they are pretty average and it's certainly not horrible. If you want some Chinese, give it a go.

Yelp
Was getting nails done and referred to this place. By far the older lady who takes and hands out orders was worth the visit I wanted egg foo young and was crossed off menu I could not order I order general tso's chicken with lonein and a side of fried rice $18 Get home lomein in same pan as chicken but Noodles was in some brown gravy mess. Yuck!! I took meat out and ate with some rice also yuck! The rice was white rice stirred around in the wok not fried at all. Not to my liking AT ALL!! Egg roll was chicken no pork egg roll option and tiny not an actual wonton fried but some battered tasting sweet type batter.. I ordered cause people raved about it but never again. I was literally sick all night after I ate. Not at all take out Chinese I am used to Buyer beware!!

Yelp
It doesn't get much worse than this spot. I seriously would eat wet dog food over this dump. I've given them 3 opportunities to possibly improve their food and to no avail. It's unfortunate because I live in Elizabeth. I have to go to Kings drive for great Chinese food. The food is always bland and soggy. Like boil in a bag Chinese. Disgusting.

Twana P.

Yelp
I placed an Uber eats order for Beef Mei Fun and I give Ho Ho Cherry House 3 thumbs up and 5 stars. Even though they don't use wide noodles. The food was very favorable. And I had enough food for two meals. The crab ragoons were good too.
google avatar

Gina M.

Yelp
This was my favorite Chinese place but they are never consistent anymore. I guess due to increases in Doordash orders and the pandemic in general it just seems like they no longer care. Sometimes the general chicken is way too spicy, to the point you can hardly eat it. I know this is a spicy dish but we used to get it and there was no problem. Now I have to say mild. Sometimes the sauce in the sesame chicken is kind of watery, which is weird. The egg rolls or the Crab Rangoon may be over fried, or they are using old grease. It's always one or the other. I took a break from them for a while and then went back tonight. When they are good they are soo good, and I missed their sesame chicken. The sesame and general chicken we got tonight were good, along with the crab Rangoon. But of course these are the worst I've ever seen the egg rolls. They knew putting these in the bag they were almost burnt but they put them in anyway. Just isn't consistent anymore.
google avatar

Jennifer N.

Yelp
We got takeout here - walnut shrimp, spicy chicken, broccoli beef and house lo mein. Nothing stood out as amazing nor terribly awful. I had a side of crab Rangoon where I enjoyed the crunch but there was too little filling - absolutely no crab it tasted like. I wasn't super impressed. Probably won't order here again unless if I want mediocre Chinese food

Yelp
You Get What You Pay For :) I decided to try this place after buying a Groupon. It was really okay. It wasn't terrible food but at the same time I really can't see myself coming back unless I have the munchies and that's the only place. Good portions but again not the best. I wouldn't recommend. But it's a good place if you're in a hurry or too lazy to make dinner. Just make sure you have time to wait.

Elizabeth H.

Yelp
Yes...like a Shun Lee little brother! So fresh and so good. Comfort food all the way. Tangerine chicken is it

Robin H.

Yelp
This was so horrible. The food taste like air. I'm sitting here trying to eat this while typing. Did you guys even attempt to use seasoning? Pepper steak was sooooo bland. All I taste is the bell peppers. My wings taste like the just tossed it in some flour and then into the grease. I should've read the reviews first but I didn't think I needed to because I've never had tasteless Chinese food before. It must be hypertension patients keeping them in business. Food is supposed to make your soul smile. I feel full but I'm not satisfied. I should happy after a meal. Especially one I paid $70 for.
google avatar

Ken H.

Yelp
Unfortunately Ho Ho just hasn't kept up the food and service it used to have. The most recent trip was for lunch. The first call resulted in the person hanging up on me. Upon calling back, I placed my order and picked it up about 15 minutes later. The portions are still large for the price, but the quality of the chicken was tough and stringy compared to Taipei Express. It was also sitting in half an inch of watery oil. I think my Chinese takeout business may be headed elsewhere. :-(

Ashlynn N.

Yelp
One of the fastest, tastiest Chinese restaurants I've ever ordered from! I was worried about how long we'd be waiting because of all the people waiting when we got there (excluding the never ending door dashers), but we ordered, got told 15 min, and they were done before that! and to top it all off our food was delicious. If i remember right we ordered combos of sweet and sour chicken, orange chicken, some noodles, and Crab Rangoon. Everything was delicious! Wish I had pictures to show- but trust me its great!

Hannah S.

Yelp
I don't like to write negative reviews, but this was just not good. 30% of my beef was chewy and inedible and the sauce had no flavor, even after I added multiple packets of soy, etc. I haven't found great Chinese in charlotte, but this was by far the worst. 2 stars because it would have to literally make me sick to get one star... but it was one star quality food
google avatar

Sean P.

Yelp
Just moved to Charlotte and I've been in search of an essential fast good cheap Chinese take out. Ho Ho Cherry House ticks all the boxes. While nothing mind blowing, this place has all your standard Chinese dishes served in rather large portions! The food is good quality and flavors are true. You won't find some random sauce that is used in every dish here. The menu has a few more health conscious options you won't find at many others, which is nice for the days I feel like lying to myself about dieting. Pick up and delivery have been on time and hot as hell by the time it gets home. Good job Ho Ho Cherry House.

Taylor F.

Yelp
It was my first time going in tonight. As soon as I walked in I was greeted by the sweetest lady ever! She was beyond helpful and made me feel very welcomed. I got a Hot and Sour soup, it was delicious!! Definitely recommend coming here!!
google avatar

Kailey F.

Yelp
Best Chinese take out in Charlotte! Been coming here since I was a kid and it's always great :)
google avatar

Megan J.

Yelp
I have been on a Chinese Food kick lately and I'm no longer within delivery distance of my favorite Fortune Cookie. This place is always on the "Best Chinese in CLT" lists, so I figured I would check it out. I honestly don't think I will be ordering from here again. Delivery was on time and the food was what I ordered- nothing was messed up. The food was just ok. I got the chicken and broccoli. The chicken was pretty bad- the sauce didn't have a good taste and was kind of bland. The broccoli was rubbery. Even the white rice had a weird taste to it. The soups were both good and very hot. I had hot and sour and the egg drop soup. The wonton soup was not very good. Overall, just really not good food and even if the prices are cheap, it isn't worth it.
google avatar

Sandra L.

Yelp
I have a passion for Egg Fu Yung. This place does not disappoint! The chicken by far is my favorite and I haven't ordered anything else from an entree perspective because it's hard for me to find one that is really good. I am not a fan that that for the price you only get one spring role and the spareribs are never good in Chinese restaurant and those are so so. But for me the prices are good and my trusty EFY can last three meals so I will keep coming back
google avatar

Class A.

Yelp
I have ordered from here twice. The first time was bland, but at reasonable prices, I decided to give it another chance. The second time, the food was still bland but then I found the unthinkable (antenna/ insect leg) in my food. My husband and I cannot make out what this is. Our imaginations I believe have gotten the better of us. But when my sister saw what was in my food as well... We will NOT be taking any further chances with this restaurant. No matter how reasonable the cost is.
google avatar

James P.

Yelp
It reminds me of New York New Jersey type of cooking but however they can overdo it a little bit. Meaning if you say extra spicy and not to be offensive. but I don't know how you translate that to put an extra peppers red peppers hot peppers in my food I just want extra spice And make it more savory. Put the food is very good quality I got to give them that and not bad on quantity. I recommend this place
google avatar

Marina C.

Yelp
1/10 stars. I ordered off door dash for work. And they came with fried rice that was stale. An egg roll that was not properly cooked all the way it was burnt. The lunch special made me sick the rest of the day. And they also messed up part of our order. I have to say no this is caca
google avatar

Maria L.

Yelp
This place is some of the best Chinese food I've had in the states. Reminds me of my travels through Hong Kong and Mainland China. Everything seems to be homemade and they use good meat, no skimping here.
google avatar

Erik L.

Yelp
Th is is a little whole in the wall spot, don't take it the wrong way I like these kinda spots. My first visit and the food was good and hot. You will be surprised at how busy this location is. When you come bring your appetit the food is plenty. Our hostess Jessica was very friendly and attractive. I had the chicken shrimp and broccoli with an egg roll. It all had really good flavor. I will return again.
google avatar

Emily C.

Yelp
This is the funniest name, which is partly why I decided to order from them. Despite the reviews on here, I decided to order delivery while in Charlotte one weekend with friends. I thought this take out was just as delicious as any other place. It was pretty good considering everyone seems to be haters on Yelp.
google avatar

Virginia S.

Yelp
WARNING: This place is not safe for anyone with NUT ALLERGIES! I placed a delivery order online today at 7:21pm. My order was quoted 45-60 mins. At 8:50 my door bell finally rang. The driver hands me a receipt and there is no tip line. He said you have to do that before online. Why would I place a tip online before I receive a service? How do I know how much I will tip? My order took long than was quoted so I am glad I didn't tip while placing my order. I called to check on my order before the delivery arrived and the women I spoke with was very rude, she had a serious attitude with me. NOW ON TO THE BIG ISSUE: I have a severe peanut and treenut allergy. I ordered Chicken LoMein and noted my allergy in the comment box. When I got my dinner I took 3 bites and I could already feel an allergic reaction!! If you can't accommodate an allergy then you should have called an informed me! My allergy is a life or death situation for me, I am prone to anaphylactic reactions! This isn't something to joke around with and I would say the liability is one them for not informing me that it wouldn't be safe!!! NEVER AGAIN WILL I WASTED MY MONEY ON THE OVERPRICED FOOD OR POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE!!
google avatar

Anita T.

Yelp
The food here is one of the best Chinese food places I have had since I have been here In Chatlotte for a year. However, the servers aren't rude or anything, they just Aren't the nicest people on the planet. I will say the food is always ready quick, whether you eat in or take out. Today unfortunately, since I've been not eating meat I've been ordering things that don't have meat on it obviously. I ordered vegetable spring rolls but when I went to eat it and it was basically an egg roll with pork in it. I called to make sure I wasn't going crazy and she said it's just vegetables in it (of course she did) I'm done. I'm still going there because the rice is AMAZING!! But ‍
google avatar

Tikia W.

Yelp
Decent and cheap. The food wasn't the best that I've had, but it was worth it for the price. The outside looks a little sketchy but the inside is cozy and the service was okay.
