Ho-Ja Review - Shepherd's Bush - London - The Infatuation

"If you work in W12 or need somewhere to fill up before a gig at Shepherd’s Bush Empire, then Ho-Ja is a very useful place to have in your back pocket. A small, casual Taiwanese restaurant and shop on Goldhawk Road, this is the kind of place where students come for stir-fried udon noodles, and locals stop by with pyjama tops on under their coats to pick up bubble tea and a bag of frozen gyoza. This place will feed you quickly and almost everything is under a tenner. The bao tend to be underfilled and lack flavour, but you can’t go wrong with a rainy Wednesday emergency order of steaming beef noodle soup, or the hefty Taiwanese pancake katsu roll. It ranks as one of the best grab-and-go lunchtime options in the area." - Heidi Lauth Beasley

The food tastes more like fast food rather than a restaurant. The flavors are normal, but on the salty side. You need to order at the counter, and the staff won't serve you any water or provide any service, yet they will still charge a mandatory service fee. This restaurant also serves as a supermarket, and my friend told me that they bought moldy food here after I had my meal. I won't go a second time, it was a terrible experience.

Google
What a find! Cafeteria style, comfortable atmosphere for easy eats. The food was okay, not bad, but there's a wide variety of Taiwanese dishes. Lovely to warm up to hot soup noodles and oden in the freezing cold weather.

Summary: If you’re someone who likes food and have taste. Don’t come here. There’s a very nice Thai restaurant across the street. Go there. Ordered the £18 set The Karage chicken starter very small but very good. Ordered the chilli sauce. Jelly like texture, can’t even pour it on the chicken katsu evenly. Chicken Katsu good in general. Just what you’ll expect. The custard bun is the absolute worst. Just look at the picture. Photo taken immediately after cutting open. Grabbed the korean chocolate pie free gift from the little wooden box beside the till as we’ve spent more than £25. It’s expired on the 17/4 i believe. Told the staff there upon leaving, and he just replied yep yep. I literally just threw it back into the box. This place used to be good but not anymore.

Google
Come here if you want authentic, delicious Taiwanese food for a great price. All the dishes we had were amazing and just like they’d taste in Taiwan! The waitress was very helpful and don’t be afraid to ask for their recommendations! Atmosphere is nice, great place to come with friends or on your own and chill.

Service was fast and the atmosphere was very chill I love the deco of the restaurant. The taiwanese style chicken chop tasted authentic. However the steam rice was too dry.

I really want to give a negative star , but there is no such option. Google may need to think about this option as an improvement. First of all, I want to say hello Ha-ja chef, seems like you call yourself a chef because you can get the food cooked . But you know nothing about Taiwanese food. We ordered 8 dishes , nothing is close to right, or tasty . - beef noodle (牛肉面), this is one of the Taiwanese signature dish, you got it so wrong, I think instant noodle is way much better that your. The soup is so tasteless , noodle is basically those dry noodle from supermarket . Oh man , put it this way, you got everything wrong about this dish , so please stop selling it. - pork rice (卤肉饭), another signature dish which is ruined so badly . To the owner or the chef , simple tips , first of all you need to cook the rice right . I do not even want to comment on the pork, cause it is so wrong . I think the above two is enough to judge whether it is a ok Taiwanese restaurant or not . The rest, are basically so bad that any Chinese takeaway is way better . I suggest the owner or the chef try to understand want Taiwanese food , or what food should be cooked and tasted , before calling themselves a Taiwanese restaurants. The food is so bad that made me angry for the rest of the night. Oh man , have some integrity.

Google
Really authentic Taiwanese food! Was on a search for Taiwanese cuisine for a friend who previously lived in Taiwan and we found this restaurant, and we had a great meal. First of all the price is really affordable, compared to most East Asian restaurants in Greater London. We tried stewed pork with rice and Taiwan sausage, both very authentic. The pork Katsu from the bento was very impressive. The bubble tea was cheap and tasty. The staff was very friendly and helpful. 100% will come back again

Google
Great cheap eats! Ate here before a show at the Apollo and would definitely come back. A main and side each comes to under £20 per head and drinks are cheaper than in nearby pubs. Very casual (cafe is joined to a supermarket) but nice cafe decor and helpful service. Good size portions without being too heavy, food is made to order but arrived quickly.

Yelp
I've never dined in as I live so close, so I usually just take to go. The popcorn chicken is pretty decent, especially for the price. The groceries inside were nice for last minute shopping if I didn't want to walk too far, but it was more expensive than others. The service was pretty normal. Overall, a great place to pop in for popcorn chicken.

Yelp
Paid £35 for my food look at the photo worth it? Maybe if its half the price yeah and its not even in central london. Dont waste your time here since there are better taiwanese food out there with cheaper price. Not recommended and dont even bother. AVOID AT ALL COST!!

Yelp
I ordered some products online and made up the rest to qualify for free delivery on the 17th July. I received a phone call on the 4th August saying that the delivery would be delayed. I finally received my delivery on the 10th August with the keys products that I ordered missing. Ho-ja should have notified me that they didn't have those items available so that I had an option of cancelling the order. I then had to chase them twice to get refunds for the missing items. Poor customer service.

Yelp
Nice restaurant. I had the "3 cups chicken bento" which was good and at a fair price. However, the taro bun I had was disappointing (just an industrial one). Overall, a good place to have a quick meal in the area.

Yelp
How have I not reviewed this place before??? Lovely yummy Taiwanese Food. The chicken popcorn is to die for. We ended up ordering 4 plates of those between 3 of us. 3 of them were ordered, after we had ordered the whole meal & tasted the popcorn chicken! Light, soothing, yet nourishing soups. We made a meal of the soups, appetisers and specials. They have sauces on the side depending on your heat tolerance. We chose the spiciest version & were very happy with it. Some of the home made dumplings had thicker skins, but the fried dumplings were thinner skinned. The thicker ones, weren't pasty, they were just slightly thicker than normal. The beef rolls were good too. There are a couple of Taiwanese drinks, that are quite interesting. The interiors seem a bit sparse and industrial, but the service is warm & helpful. I'll stop by anytime for that popcorn chicken.

Yelp
A really cute, friendly, delicious neighborhood eatery serving authentic Taiwanese dishes (street food). Small menu but all great! Love the ambiance and wooden tables there.

Yelp
I pass by Ho Ja everyday and as its new to the neighborhood I was really wanting to go. I ran by recently while they were passing out samples and the chicken was SO good. I had a slightly different experience when I went for dinner. First off, I should have gotten the chicken. I instead opted for something more authentic Asian and got a beef roll which while was OK, I didn't find it had much flavour. The Ho Ja sauce definitely helped. It came with a pickled salad which was basically pickled broccoli and carrot that had just about turned to mush. With the beef roll I also had a Taiwanese beer, good price and cold. The interior is nice, very clean, wood benches and casual dining area and the staff was very friendly. I had very high hopes but was left still wanting. I will probably be back but to go for the chicken which I had the sample of and maybe for some karaoke downstairs.

Yelp
The namesake chicken popcorn is by far the best thing we tried, although only one dipping sauce is included and they nickel-and-dime for extras (£0.50 each). I would have liked to try more sauces, but at that price, I almost feel like you're better off just getting another order of chicken. A friend got the pork katsu bento; she liked the pork katsu but said the vegetables weren't cooked well. We also got a radish cake, which was good. We were less happy with the beef roll as it was really dry and not put together well, although there may have been an issue with the kitchen on this one as 1) it didn't look like any of the pictures that fellow Yelpers have posted on here and 2) we had to wait forever to get it as apparently the kitchen forgot and then the chef and the person who took our order had a huge yelling match about it, which was really awkward. I suppose it's possible the chef was upset and just threw together whatever we eventually got, which might explain why it was so bad, but they still shouldn't take it out on the paying customer. I think this place might be worth a trip back just to try some more things and give them another shot, but this first visit left me unimpressed.

Yelp
It's clean environment and good atmosphere. You can try the Taiwanese beef noodles and chicken popcorn, there is not a drop of water in milk sago and taro! They also sell Taiwan Beer, Taiwanese root bear with Apple cider. The price is cheap, a Bento around £6、beef noodles around £7. By the way there is Karaoke in downstairs, can have a party there.

Yelp
I am happy that Ho-ja has come to this side of town, a very casual, industrially decorated, high-ceilinged café at the Shepherds Bush end of Goldhawk Road. Makes a very very welcome alternative to the chains of Westfield. I enjoyed a very generous portion of fried chicken pieces-dark meat, not white meat, as it should be! I also had a braised beef slice plate with rice, which came with a thin broth and fresh veggies. Both were lovely, clean textures and flavours, both very enjoyable. I also tried a home-made bubble tea which was huge and very refreshing. I really enjoyed my time here, chilled and a lovely place to be. My only problem was with the menu, its fairly big but also quite confusing, not enough to deter me from happily visiting again though!

Yelp
I only tried their bubble tea, which was ready for take away quickly. They were generous with the bubbles (tapioca), and the lychee flavor came through. A tiny bit too sweet for me, but it didn't taste like corn/glucose syrup, for which I was grateful. Looking forward to returning, especially to try their karaoke room.

Yelp
Dumplings here are delicious but I'm giving a 3 star review to their fried udon. Too oily. Just not the best I tried. I would prob take beef noodles soup instead! Would give it another try.

Yelp
Quiet and cosy spot with very good lunch offers. Don't miss the chicken popcorn, the chicken katsu bento with curry sauce, and the beef noodle soup with taiwanese noodles.

Yelp
Ho Ja is an affordable eatery where it is. The food is better and more ranged than many current restaurants here in Shepherds Bush. I normally order the Taiwanese chicken burger or the beef bento box. The food could be more hot but it is fresh. The chicken burger comes out hot with a complimentary free sauce. Staff are friendly and interior feels comfortable. The food overall gives off a homely Taiwanese eating experience than a fine dining one. Prices are reasonable and worth the portions.

Yelp
Nice people, legit Taiwanese food! Remind me of home. Bubble tea is definitely must-try. You can tell they use real tea and milk, no artificial sweet. Nice interior, and cheaper than other Taiwanese places!!!! They have karaoke in the basement as well! Love this place and will visit very often!

Yelp
I had walked by this place many times and was excited for a new cute hole in the wall Asian place to be in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, the food was not astounding.. I had the fish katsu bento and was pretty disappointed. The veggies (2 pieces of broccoli and 2 pieces of carrot) were very over cooked and had basically turned to mush. The accompanying rice was also cold and quite dry. The fish was decebt and was a good portion for the price. The only saving grace to Ho Ja was the sauce variety (I like any restaurant that gives me condiment options) and The 2 pound Taiwanese beer.

Yelp
I was really excited that there was a Taiwanese place not far from my house but this place is more like a 2.5 star place. The inside is cute and clean. Staff was friendly, food was relatively quick and well priced. Just lacking in the area of flavour, things just tasted bland and my dish was over cooked. I had the teriyaki salmon while my companions had the popcorn chicken and spring rolls. It was nice that they let you pick a sauce for your dish but unfortunately they forgot to give us one of our sauces which was a little bit annoying since we got takeaway. If they amp up the seasonings, I'd give them another go.

Yelp
Our colleague walked past here and wanted to try it out, so we came with 20 colleagues. The staff were incredibly friendly and even gave us some free dessert, but overall the food was okay. Most of the menu items were fried unfortunately, everything from fried vegetables and dumplings to fried meat and rice cakes. I personally got the Taiwanese beef noodles and it didn't taste like what I had in Taiwan. The beef was good but maybe the broth wasn't right. Their beef buns were good. If I were to come back I would try their non-fried food.

Yelp
This is the first hidden gem I found since moving to London. It has everything I ask for: good authentic food, cheap prices, very friendly, and delivers with deliveroo when I feel lazy. It's not your typical nasty oriental delivery restaurant, it is a simple authentic Taiwanese restaurant. I only wish they had a larger menu.
