I am a big fan of Hodad's, having been to the one on Newport Avenue a few times. And while the food here at the Hodad's in Petco is comparable, there are a few distinct differences which sour my experience a bit in comparison.
First, the cost of everything is a good 50% more here than at other Hodad's elsewhere. And while I know that it's expected for food at Petco to carry a higher sticker price, one of the appeals of Hodad's in the first place is getting a healthy amount of unhealthy food for a very modest price. And while you still seem to get a huge cheeseburger with a handful of rings or fries, the $15 price tag leaves an ashy taste on the palette.
Second, it may have been because of the night we went, but the service here is severely lacking. With four (or possibly more) cash registers at the counter and two sides from which to pick up, there's plenty of space for patrons to quickly order what they want and step aside to get their greasy fare in good time. However, when only two people are manning those registers, and when they seem to be taking a good 8+ minutes to take the order of a single group, then you have the conditions that create lines that stretch far back into the stadium. Thankfully, we showed up a good two hours before Monster Jam started, allowing for the 45+ minutes we spent in line to not keep us from the opening of the show.
Anyway, they may be minor points for which to chastise a restaurant, but they do detract from my ultimate experience here. The food may be just as good, but, because of this, I would still rather enjoy a burger down by the beach than have one with me while watching a game.
