The Best Restaurants in Spokane, Washingston | Eater Seattle

"Spokane has its share of savory secrets. None better than a set of unmarked stairs leading into the basement of the Cracker Building, one of the city’s oldest landmarks. At the bottom, you’ll find a whiskey-forward craft cocktail lounge headed up by Simon Moorby. Enjoy the spirits — but what will truly haunt you is if you leave without biting into anything from the wildly eclectic menu curated by Josepeh O’Neal. It’s not often you see a catfish po’boy and tantanmen ramen sitting across the table from smoked brisket tacos and okonomiyaki tater tots." - Kris Kilduff

Hogwash Review - Lower Nob Hill - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Every once in a while, we’ll notice something that goes shockingly under-appreciated, like the self-cleaning function of your oven or Guy Pearce. They’re right in the open, but we never seem to grasp how much better they make life. That’s how we feel about Hogwash too, a beer bar in Union Square that should be in everyone’s rotation more than it already is. This place on Sutter has 30 craft beers on tap and a knowledgeable staff who’ll help you choose something based on your favorite type of beer, star sign, or maybe even a favorite member of the Wu-Tang Clan. The beers here come in a variety of different sizes - including a giant fishbowl - but unless you come with other people or have a strange love for room temperature beer, we suggest sticking with standard 6 oz. pours. Besides beers, they also serve bar food - including some excellent sandwiches with housemade sausages - all of which is substantial enough to work as an impromptu dinner after a few drinks and good enough to make you want to come here on a lazy night when your fridge is empty. We particularly like the Sheepish with two fennel-heavy lamb merguez sausages, topped with blue cheese sauce, pickled cabbage, and beet relish. But if you want something to split with a few friends, their curry fries with a duck egg on top are fantastic, a little easier to pass around than a sandwich, and won’t necessarily fill you up if you’re camped out here waiting for a table at Liholiho Yacht Club." - Will Kamensky

Google
We loved this place! The only reason I went with 4 stars is I feel the community bar, the stools need to be more comfortable & it needs purse hooks underneath.. parking is great, food and drinks are great. The service is personable for sure..

Google
Tots are out of this world. Also enjoyed the cauliflower wings & vegan mushroom coconut soup! Milk punch was great. Little loud inside when busy - but isn’t that the point? Great vibes, good food.

Google
Amazing bar! The service and bartenders were outstanding. PHENOMENAL FOOD as well - that was possibly the best cheeseburger I've had in my life. I heard one of the bartenders singing Joe Hendry's song while walking around and that alone gets them 5 stars. I will definitely be coming back next time I'm in town 🙏

Google
I found this literally hidden gem when spending some time in Spokane and I think about it often so I thought I'd share some love. I ended up going there twice that week, thanks for being so awesome. I sat at the bar, cool intimate space with a undeniable historic vibe, the staff were friendly and helpful both nights. Drinks are really fun and inventive. Food is way better than your average bar food. They have something special going on here and like I said, I think about it often. I wish I wasn't a 4+ hour drive from here because I'd likely make myself a regular. Additional notes: It took me a minute to find the place when I first got to the old converted warehouse, because I came in from the parking lot side and the entry is on the street side as soon as you enter, but what a cool spot!

Google
Outstanding establishment!!!! It's like stepping back in time as you walk in the door...if they don't have what you want, then you don't need it! That being said....they have EVERYTHING!!! I had an Irish Whiskey Flight and the Catfish with Grits....it made my heart smile! You gotta go check this place out. My only regret is that I didn't find this place sooner!

Google
The ramen was delicious and hearty, the two cocktails I had were unique and tasted great (Mindkiller and You Got Serbed), and the donuts were so fluffy inside. Would come back next time I'm in town.

We decided to go to hogwash and have dinner and drinks because we were going to a concert nearby..we loved the atmosphere but the service left a lot to be desired there were five staff behind the counter all chatting up a storm and ignoring us for quite some time the skinny blonde girl seemed to have quite the attitude almost like it was an inconvenience to be our server I finally caught one of the kitchen staff walking by and said excuse me could you have her come over and take her order because we've been waiting for quite a while and he said absolutely, he then went straight to her and mentioned that we needed to be waited on and she ended up sending someone else over. We had to wait a very long time on our drinks but I will say the food was amazing. Not sure if I will bother going there again just because of the service

Google
Super fun, great creative drinks and food. I really liked the building and what they did with it, will be returning for sure. 4/5 on service only because the place was packed and I thought, service would suffer. However the hostess busted her butt to get us a killer table, but the server was a dud.

Yelp
Not gonna lie, had a little trouble finding this place. But once you find the door, watch out, you are in for a real treat! We went during their birthday celebration so I got a limited time special which was amazing. Cheese burger with fried cheese! I mean come on!!! They have a great supply of different whiskey and bourbons to sample. My wife loved her traditional whisky sour.
google avatar

Yelp
The Drinks here are masterfully created. So good! Speakeasy vibe low lighting comfortable booths or at the bar seating. It's the best variety of spirits I've ever seen. Food is fun and intriguing. The food was excellent, from the taquito appetizer to the Raman main course. A must-try was the donuts for dessert. Always a favorite when in Spokane
google avatar

Shanti M.

Yelp
Impeccable service: elevated cocktails & incredible comfort food!!! Fabulous spot for grown-up time!!!
google avatar

Jay C.

Yelp
I had a chicken sandwich here and it was the best sandwich I've ever had! Highly recommend trying them the taquitos were very good but a bit on the crispy side but very good the drinks are outstanding flavor and a cool vibe I will be going back for sure.

Yelp
What an amazing find! We were in town visiting and I had read about this place before we visited. Had to make it in and sooooo happy we did. The spot is such a cool bar with incredible ambiance. The food was sooooo good! We had the Ramen, the curry fried rice and the taquitos, and it was sooooo fresh and tasty. Service was great, we will come back to just visit you all again! Thanks for a great night out.
google avatar

Kurt G.

Yelp
A fun place with that speakeasy vibe, even a bit hard to find, inside by the door to the street. Of course a great job on our cocktails. Definitely want to vibe back and try a few of the whiskey flights. Food was surprisingly good as well. Only complaint: kind of expensive. For example, the whiskey flights start at $30. Cocktails at $12+. Not saying it isn't worth it, just know that you are going to drop $100.
google avatar

Jae D.

Yelp
My friends and I went here and had to try the ramen! We saw the reviews from others and decide to give it a try. It was so flavorful and delicious. I would say it had more flavor and depth than the other ramen places I have had in Spokane. The waiter was kind and friendly. We got there a little early and seemed to best the rush. Would definitely come back!
google avatar

Yelp
Atmosphere 10 out of 10. Service was very good. Sad we couldn't try more food options. Very cozy spot for a date night.

Yelp
We ate here for the Inlander Restaurant Week and the food was great! I got the candlewick salad, the hogwash burger, and the banana coffee bread pudding! They were good sizes and really delish. The one complaint I have was that the service was not great. We waited about 30 minutes for the waiter to take our credit cards after the dropped off our check. Every time we go, we have pretty slow service. The cocktails are good though, so it makes up for it :)
google avatar

Yelp
I have not reviewed a restaurant in a long time but today I felt so inspired I have to tell the whole world. I have a lot of allergies and when I told Erin she had the chef Joe come out and assist in my food selection. In the end I just wanted a burger. But to my surprise- it was no ordinary burger. I think I am now officially hooked! The stacked cheeseburger reminded me of the childhood cookouts that my parents would have on the weekends. If you want a fun rustic atmosphere combined with the flavor of Cheers this is your place. They also offer fresh juices too. I am now a lifetime fan.
google avatar

Mike K.

Yelp
Even though it is hard to find, hell yes, the S'more Old fashioned was the best, the burger was amazing, the service was excellent, the bartender really made us feel like home, very relaxing place to unwind from a long day,
google avatar

Jubilee P.

Yelp
Disappointed that three things I wanted to order was just not ready when I arrived, said it would be available later in the day. Oh well, the food that we got was still amazing and the drinks were interesting, very strong, and tasty. The bartenders/waiters did a great job managing despite the fact that half the menu wasn't available, we also went early to avoid the crowds but I guess you pay for what you get. The bartenders/waiters gave great recommendations in place of what we wanted, and the drinks are truly art. The downstairs speakeasy style intimate setting was awesome, definitely recommend!

Molly S.

Yelp
Something was "off" with the Ramen. Burger and chicken sandwich were both good. Our waiter was incredibly rude. There was no "please wait to be seated" sign so we took one of the stand up tables. Once a sit down table opened up we moved to it. Boy did that set our waiter off. Confronted us and then had the other waiter finish up serving us. I will not be going back.

Yelp
I'm all for making mistakes as a server myself but I'm really unimpressed. Enough to download yelp to leave a review. Sat for 40 mins and wasn't served anything but water. got ID'd twice because they forgot we were sat. Young short-haired blonde waitress had an extremely horrible attitude when we were finally helped (without asking). That was enough for us to leave without even trying anything. Food LOOKED appetizing though.

Deb R.

Yelp
Knowledgeable servers! This is a great place, the severs were helpful, the selection of whiskeys was great and the mixed drinks were awesome. Prices weren't out of line for the quality product. We will be back!

Robert L.

Yelp
Everything I ordered was above average and delicious. And I loved the semi-secret basement location and speakeasy vibe.
google avatar

Shelbie C.

Yelp
Cute bar with pretty large specialty cocktail list. Some are riffs on well known cocktails. Others seem imaginative. Lots of whiskeys.
google avatar

Yelp
Great little find during my stay in Spokane. I can only speak of the whiskey and the service which were both awesome but I will be trying the food next time I visit. My bartender was a little under the weather (not sick, just a headache) and a little quiet but he still muscled through to recommend a good whiskey. We've all been there so no sweat. We gotta pay the bills ya know? Chill place to hang out and I'm going to bring a book next time so I can stay longer.
google avatar

William K.

Yelp
Wonderful concept. The location and entrance speak of prohibition in the day. Very cool! I do enjoy a good pour from the bartender. The Den wasn't what you expect in a prohibition bar? I have not seen this in a very long time but the bartender measures alcohol in an old glass jigger. No music reflecting that era. No music at all. I had a ribeye steak which reached a level of 5/10. My friend had a burger and loved it. I would rather go to the Onion for a Burger. For him it was a 8 out of ten burger. The hamburger did not reach a level in my mind to compare to others in town . The Hogwash could do very well if their behavior, cocktails, and food reflected what one might think of a prohibition bar. If you can't pull off the food just work on happy hour and sides. Don't pour drinks like you work at a Marriott Hotel. As you know the money is in the bar

Glenn T.

Yelp
The food is always innovative, well executed, served hot quickly. The staff is personable and interesting. It's reasonably priced. Perhaps the best value in town. The ambiance is cozy. The booths perhaps too big unless you share. It feels intimate and yet private at the same time. Unpretentious and yet cool
google avatar

Hbk S.

Yelp
My 5 star review I'll never change. I love Hogwash with the wide selection of drinks, great ambiance, and also the small but fantastic food menu they always have. That chicken sandwich I had today is unforgettable!
google avatar

Olesya B.

Yelp
Stopped by to get out of the cold snow and warm up with some friends and was not disappointed. The entrance was a bit tricky to find but the "back door" feel makes this place all the more intriguing. The lights are a bit dim and the atmosphere is laid back with super friendly chill staff and adding food and great drinks into the mix makes for a perfect ending to any day. If you're looking for a someplace new and cool to try, you're reading this review for that reason!

Yelp
Dang Spokane, you fancy! This is a speakeasy-style bar in Spokane. It's a style of bar that didn't exist when I lived in town. The drinks here are probably expensive for Spokane, but they are "cheap" for Anchorage! There are many different Whisky-based cocktails. Some even use Islay Scotch. I make cocktails with Islay and it makes all my snobby friends cry, it's good to know I'm not alone! Service was spectacular and ambiance was best-in-class. It's the kind of place where you'd expect to see hand-made leather goods, and maybe a hatchet or two. I didn't get any food, but it looked incredible. And, again, reasonably priced compared to Anchorage. I was sad to have to leave here.

David P.

Yelp
Really charming place in an old old building. Bartenders all know their drinks and make them right
google avatar

Leslie H.

Yelp
I freaking loved this place. Even though it took me a few attempts to find it. It felt a bit like Prohibition times and I half expected someone to open a small window in the door and ask me for a password. After trying one of their specialty cocktails I went back to the Old Fashioned's which were perfect. I'm sure I'll return here again the next time I am visiting my buddy in Washington.
google avatar

Bartholomew J.

Yelp
11 months ago this place was the go to place. Recently I came back here and was let down. Bring back the old chicken sandwich please. Drinks ran empty, food cold, did not live up to its potential. Reverse back to the way it was.

Terri E.

Yelp
Very interesting venue :) reminds one of a prohibition era speakeasy - the kind that you have to know the secret password to be let in :)

Yelp
I'm thrilled to share this review as I have been taking an extended break from Hogwash. I used to frequent this place almost weekly, but the service was painfully slow, to the point that I couldn't come back for a couple years. However, we recently went back for some late night drinks and apps and had an amazing experience. The place was packed but we got our order taken within a few minutes of coming in and our drinks arrived shortly after. As craft cocktail prices rise, our beverages felt like a solid value with great flavors. Our food - which came out within about 15 minutes - was prepared wonderfully with crispy cauliflower and rich pozole! The cornbread was a unique side but also tasted delicious. I can't wait to come back again now that they've found their groove again.
google avatar

Jenny T.

Yelp
This is a cool and unique place to go for a underground vibe. The old fashion, according to my brother, was top notch and was able to get a tasty vodka martini off menu since I don't enjoy whiskey. My husband biggest complaint was that they didn't have a list of their whiskeys with prices. Apparently that had a flood this year and are still inventory, so hopefully that will change soon. We just had drinks, but their is a limited menu for those who want some food as well, but maybe not the beat fare if you are vegetarian or gluten
google avatar

Lori H.

Yelp
I can't wait until I can go back to this place when the whole menu is available! The chicken sandwiches were juicy and not over-breaded. The burger was cooked a nice mid rare, a little bit of pink. Be prepared to need a serious washing afterward for all the juices that will be running all over. The fries were big and came in a huge serving. Definitely enough for the 3 of us The burger came with pickles - I gotta say - I could eat a whole jar of those pickles. Super sour, a hint of sweet, and nicely crunchy. Yum!
google avatar

Natasha O.

Yelp
We had a wonderful experience at Hogwash! A gem of a hole in the wall. The atmosphere is wonderful and so unique. My husband had a bourbon flight. Loved it! I had an old-fashioned. Our food experience was amazing. The chicken sandwich, burger, and shared fries. Amazing flavors! My only gripe was that our server was not very attentive. However, it was a Friday night. We probably would have had more drinks, but our server didn't come back for so long that we decided to just get the check and go someplace else. Definitely worth stopping by though!

Yelp
Food: I ordered the schnitzel pork sandwich and a whiskey sour. The sandwich was delicious and the whiskey sour was too. No complaints on the food. Cost: The schnitzel sandwich was about $14 and the whiskey sour was about $10. I think their food and drinks are WAY overpriced, but I wanted to try this place out because of the great reviews. Although the food was good and the drink was too, I wouldn't return because of the extremely high prices and some of the staff. Dining Area: Seems sufficient, no complaints here. The customer area is small, but they have arranged it for maximum seating. One customer came in and ended up leaving because they felt they had no where to sit, a few other customers couldn't find seating and had to stand at the standing table located in the middle of the customers area. I can see it getting a bit tight and crowded in there, very easily. However, it's definitely a very cool atmosphere. Parking: There is a lot of metered parking in the area and there is a small parking lot connected to the old brick building where this establishment is located, it is free. Service: It took too long for someone to get me a menu and take my order, especially considering there were four people behind the bar and the establishment is rather small. Three of the four employees behind the bar were friendly and okay, one girl with short white hair was a bit unfriendly. The guy mixing the drinks was very friendly, he's an asset to that place. Another heavy set guy with short curly hair and a nose ring spent too much time conversing with these two guys at the bar and the other girl with dark hair was working her ass off, she's another asset to that place. Overall, the staff wouldn't stop me from visiting this place again, but the prices would. Summary: RECOMMENDED for a cool retro themed experience, good food and good drink. However, it's one of those one time experiences because of the prices and the lackluster service.
google avatar

Chanele R.

Yelp
I'm not going to lie. You had me at whiskey. There is an amazing selection here, and the bartenders are all too obliged to help you (or me) figure out what the right one is. I am on a mission to sample as many whiskeys as it takes to find a signature. Hogwash is a seriously good place to do it, too. The only downside to this place is that it isn't very big, so if you come on a weekend, it is going to be crowded. The booths are quite large, so either bring the whole crew or be prepared to share your date space with someone else.
google avatar

Lanette K.

Yelp
Started out good.. nice little hole in the wall that we really wanted to try for my boyfriends birthday since he loves whiskey and good food. This place was a unique gem and the food menu looked awesome. We started with some drinks and naughty fries.. which were great, but then things got a little hectic. Our date night turned into chaos. This place got so jam packed so quick and the two servers and one bartender were in over their heads. We had people sitting packed so close to us we couldn't help but overhear their conversations. We decided to dip out after sitting there unattended for more than half an hour. We were so looking forward to this experience but unfortunately had to just cut it short. I wouldn't recommend this as a dinner spot, more just a cool place for a drink or two.
google avatar

Casey H.

Yelp
Happy hour fried chicken sandwich!!! I wish I would have taken a photo before we gobbled it down. For $12 you get a HUGE piece of fried chicken on a brioche bun and amazing fries on the side. I wish they had drink specials on their happy hour menu too, but it's food only. Their featured cocktails are really tasty but on the higher side cost wise. A fun place to go on a cold weather day, given the cozy basement atmosphere.
google avatar

Eric M.

Yelp
At first I was little confused where to enter this place lol but we found it. The drinks we had were amazing!! The smash burger was amazing I don't know if you call it a smash burger though lol. Only thing that I didn't care to much about was the staff but overall good experience
google avatar

Jordan N.

Yelp
This place was amazing! The bartender was Political about the whiskies that they had, and the food that I ordered was also very delicious. The atmosphere was very very cozy And when I went it wasn't very busy but I can imagine on a weekend it would be much more crowded.I would recommend this place it was amazing
google avatar

Queena H.

Yelp
Cool speakeasy type of feel. Low lighting, lots of liquor on the wall so you know you can ask for specialty drinks. Service was ok, good but average. We ordered the chicken and waffles (yum), the burger (wow!) and cauliflower and chorizo with an egg on top (recommended by our server). I figured the food was probably going to be good since it's by the same chef as IPK and it was! We were in and out pretty fast. For what you pay and what you're eating, this place is a must!
google avatar

Miguel A.

Yelp
Awesome location with great atmosphere. Our waiter was a little odd but was friendly. Drinks were good and the food was really good. Had the naughty fries and the po boy sandwich and it was real good. Couple friends had other food and drinks and they were all great. It was so good we had to go back a few days later. If you are in the area it is definitely worth stopping in.
google avatar

Jamie L.

Yelp
This is an amazing place to gather with friends for after work drinks, dinner, or pre-funking. The staff is very knowledgeable and attentive. Great appetizers and meals. Some favorites are the Cheddar Burger, the Jamboni, and the whiskey chips. You can't go wrong with their amazing selection of whiskey drinks. Definitely a new favorite!
google avatar

Rachelle R.

Yelp
After our dinnner, couple foodie friends and I came here to continue our birthday celebration. The staffs were nice with prompt service. I was sold at the Duck Fat Donut. The maple whipped cream is light and not overly sweet. During our stay, we also recieved a warm welcome from Chef Callahan, who graciously served us an amazing Dark Chocolate Mousse with candied Kumquat (citrus fruit native in South Asia). Overall, we were satisfied and happy when we left. I will definitely go back cause I heard there's gona be more good stuff coming soon.
google avatar

Jennifer M.

Yelp
This was our first place eating out after the Covid shutdown. We were SO excited to be back out...or rather in a food establishment and this place rocked. We all shared the Korean Fried Chicken, Chicken Wings (sorry missed the picture), Grilled Cheese with Au Jus and finally the Duckfat Donuts to finish. The chicken sandwich was all of our favorite, although we enjoyed everything. The Kimchi just took it to the next level. The donuts were crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside and that sauce, just save room and make sure you order them!! Our server was great and provided recommendations since we were visiting from out of town. I think we may have hit all of them. He was spot on! Thank you, thank you!
google avatar

Jessy I.

Yelp
Let me start by saying, what a cool little spot! Kinda hidden but a fun surprise when you find it. I was pleasantly surprised by all the food we had from here and am very excited to go back and dine in at some point. We got the wing flight and my favorites were the Buffalo and Memphis Dry Rub. The Hogwash burger was really good too-perfectly cooked and everything was in ratio. I want to try more of the menu but I also just want to go back and get this burger! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Lindsey C.

Yelp
What a cool little place! Located under IPK, this little hole in the wall is a complete gem. If you are a fan of whiskey, this is the place for you! They have a ginormous selection of whiskeys and the staff is super knowledgeable. Our bartender was completely on point with his suggestions and everything was delicious. The atmosphere was also awesome, completely laid back. Definitely need to go back!
google avatar

Tyler S.

Yelp
The bartenders are great! Be careful the drinks are strong, one or two can knock your socks off. I love the esthetic of the bar. Its downstairs in a basement, giving off this rustic speakeasy vibes. There is a ton of wood beams and exposed rock.
google avatar

Margie A.

Yelp
This was my fav place for a drink in Spokane during a recent trip in town for work & then play. A local brought me here and good thing, since it was a bit hidden. That was part of the charm & wow-factor for this speakeasy though. THE AMBIANCE I braced myself for disappointment as I walked down these stairs into a basement but was pleasantly surprised. It felt immediately cozy, unique, and classy yet comfortable at the same time. I liked the diversity in the room- ranging from 20-something work buddies to an older group of friends who were out celebrating. It is fairly small so none of the booth tables were available when my group first came in. You'll want to watch out for the leather couch by the door. It sank so deep, that I was afraid I'd ever get up from it. My group felt relieved to move to one of the tables once one opened up. THE DRINKS & FOOD My table got an Amaretto Sour, Old Fashioned, and a house cocktail called "Bake Me A Shrubbery." Note that the Amaretto Sour is not on the menu but was definitely the tastiest & prettiest drink. I wasn't hungry but wanted something to snack on so I got the spicy pickled veggies appetizer. Omg, my mouth just watered. If you like kimchi, sauerkraut, or pickles, you will love this as much as I did. It had a kick, was crunchy, and I felt healthy eating the mixture of squash, carrots, etc. Overall, if you like mixed drinks and unique places, the Hogwash won't disappoint. The service was excellent & I'll be back if I'm ever in Spokane again. Have an Amaretto Sour for me if you stop by! Cheers~

Yelp
Amazing food and drinks! A really cozy basement type of speakeasy. I love coming here and bringing my friends. I had the pimento Mac and cheese and it was divine!
google avatar

Amanda N.

Yelp
It seemed as if service I received here was different from the service others received. Came in on a Friday night and split the Mac and cheese, dirty fries and crispy chicken sandwich. The fried chicken sandwich was the best food item and the drinks were great - I wish the server hadn't been so short with us.

Yelp
This place was exactly what we were looking for. While staying in Spokane, we wanted to find a place that knew how to make great cocktails and had an interesting character. We found exactly that here at Hogwash Whiskey Den! From the standard Whiskey Sour, Scofflaw, and Vieux Carre to their Beets, Bear; Battlestar Galactica and Sour Enigma, everything was well executed and delivered by their friendly bartenders. We snacked on some sautéed cauliflower with chorizo and an Italian sausage sandwich. Both were quite good and supported our evening of cocktails. Our one piece of advice in Spokane is to avoid South Brown Street/395 at night. We ran in to a homeless encampment under the bridge from the Doubletree to Hogwash. On our way back on South Washington Street, the train underpass was clear.
