Hokkaido Ramen Santouka

Hokkaido Ramen Santouka is located in the food court of the Mitsuwa Marketplace at Algonquin Rd. & Arlington Heights Rd. There are some amazing ramen dishes and there is a large menu board at the order counter. We ordered from the ramen combinations and we were not let down. The food was tasty and the prices were reasonable. 100% recommend

I always go here for lunch on Sunday, and it is always packed with people. The quality of the ramens is consistent and amazing despite the large lines. Worth the wait!

Love everything about this restaurant! While the lines are long and food court seating is crowded, it is definitely an experience and atmosphere you don’t want to miss! As a tip, be ready to give the number that’s next to the item you want to order to the person at the register.

I love their spicy miso ramen, not too big and not too small! Ordered the small size and its a perfect size for me! Everything you can taste is perfection and made with love from Japan!

This is literally THE BEST ramen you can get stateside. It's in a food court of a supermarket. When it's a slow time of day, this looks like a hole in the wall, but when lunch hits, there is the longest line for food I've seen in my entire life. If you're new to ramen, get the shoyu. You won't be disappointed. You'll be making soy sauce eggs at home after this (7 minutes is my go-to for making them at home.)

The food is good, but the service is shockingly slow and unprofessional. A woman ahead of me waited 45 minutes without receiving her food and was told there were still about 10 orders ahead of her. She tried to cancel, and the staff processed the refund without a single apology—then took another 15 minutes just to complete the refund. When it was finally my turn, the staff casually said, “It’ll be a 40-minute wait, is that okay?” No apology, no acknowledgment of the excessive wait. That says everything. The attitude was very clear: we’re busy, we don’t care if you order or not—there are plenty of other customers. I only placed my order because I had already wasted so much time. Good food does not excuse poor service, and this place clearly relies on volume rather than customer care.

We stopped here for another quick lunch and this time we tried the Ramen place! I ordered the Miso Ramen medium size and it was very tasty and the broth was really good, had a lot of flavor and the noodles were cooked just right! My husband ordered the soy sauce ramen combo, which came with a hard boil egg and a bowl of rice with chopped up char siu! The rice bowl was kinda plain, needed some sauce! I have to give the service a 5 star, the staff were really friendly and helpful! I will definitely go back and try other ramen bowls!

Some of the best ramen I’ve had in a while. You can find this place inside Mitsuwa. A gem really. The noodles had the perfect bit and texture. They are not stingy with their pork and give you big, thick pieces. Most of the pieces were nice and tender to the bite. Lastly, the broth was amazing. I usually don’t finish the broth for ramen, but I had mostly all of it. It wasn’t too salty and had a rich flavor to it. My only qualm was the egg. The egg was completely hard boiled which I’m not a fan of and had a snappy texture. I personally love soft boiled with my ramen, but definitely not worth two dollars in my opinion. HOWEVER, the egg is not enough for me to knock down the score. This ramen was top tier. So sad I don’t live in Illinois for this one.

Located in the Mitsuwa Marketplace food court, Hokkaido Ramen Santouka always came across as a little more "precious" than the other vendors in the food court - which are also all very good! Hokkaido definitely has the heritage and history and the lines are often long. Depending on the time of day, be prepared for a little wait and to jockey for an available table at the crowded food court. I ordered the Miso Ramen D with side of char siu. The portion was way large... as usual, I ordered a little too much. The broth is a umami bomb and is gives the impression that it is a touch creamy. The ramen is well-cooked and plentiful. The char siu side also strong salty/umami - but I couldn't finish it all... I left with a takeout container and will have to try again in the future with a more cooperative stomach!

While my son decided to eat sushi from inside the market, the wife and I both opted for some ramen from Santouka. The line was t very long, and the ordering system may seem overwhelming at first, but it's actually quite simple. Unfortunately, the waiting time was a lot longer. It was definitely worth the wait. I ordered their Salt Char Siu Ramen. The noodles were a little thin, but otherwise a near perfect dish. They were perfectly cooked and the pork was very tender. The broth was so flavorful, everything went so perfect together. In also ordered a side of Hanjuku tamago (soft-boiled egg) to put in my brother and it also tasted great. Will definitely want to return next time I'm in the area.

I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of this place considering it's located inside of a grocery store. the noodles definitely weren't the freshest, but for a cheap, quick meal, this place was pretty solid. i got the spiciest option and they had extra chili powder and chili oil up front when you pick up your food. i don't think i would come here again, but since it was close to o hare, i just came here before dropping somebody off for a flight.

This place used to be so good, my favorite ramen in Chicago. Unfortunately now the food quality and execution have fallen and I no longer feel the need to make the drive out from the city. There are too many other better ramen places around. The bamboo shoots were extremely salty therefore inedible. The pork slices were primarily fat/skin. The broth had a burnt aftertaste. The toppings were very skimpy. So sad!

New favorite spot!!! Just moved to Arlington Heights and this is among my top favorite restaurants!!! Takoyaki is great and I really love the volcano egg appetizer! Thank you!!!

Santouka is a Japanese ramen chain in which they're known for their 20-hour simmered pork bone broth. I usually get the Cha-Shu Gohan Combo, which comes with a small bowl or ramen of your choice and a small cha-shu gohan. For the ramen, I go for the Tonkotsu Kara Miso Ramen, which is a miso-based broth with a hint of spiciness - sometimes, the broth is super creamy and savory with the perfect amount of spice; other times, it can be a bit thin in consistency and not as flavorful. The Cha-Shu Gohan is another regular order - this rice bowl is topped with braised pork belly, and when it's prepared properly, the small pulled pieces of pork is tasty and saucy, which is enough to mix and coat the rest of the rice. Other times, the pork is less than generous in the amount and lacking the sauce. I wasn't impressed with the ramen here at all. I believe I ordered the shio ramen (mild salt flavor), which was recommended by the staff, but it seriously lacked flavor. The ramen here was on some lists for best ramen in Chicago, but it is at the bottom of the ramen I've had so far in the city, and I've had quite a few at this point. There are plenty of other tasty items in this food court I would recommend instead and if you're looking for ramen this might not satisfy you.

Used to be cash only, now it's no cash. This place continues to be a gem with lots of people everyday waiting to order. The menu is a bit confusing because it allows you to customize however you like, and you just give them the number. The regular size and the large differ just a little. The salt broth is really good. I like the original flavors. The braised meat over rice can get a bit greasy depending on the cuts of pork belly. The pork belly in the ramen is very tender. I would've given them a 5/5 if it wasn't the soup spoon they provide is always dirty. Make sure you rinse those or wipe them down.

While I was in Mitsuwa this past Tuesday evening, I wanted to try as much food as I could. There is a Hokkaido Ramen Santouka near where I live, but I wanted to see if this one was better. Sadly, I was already eating food from the other vendors at the food court, so I didn't have enough room to stomach a whole ramen. SAKE & IKURA RICE BOWL - 6 Essentially zero wait time for this since they just scooped up some rice, added some grilled salmon pieces and topped it with some ikura and green onions. This hit the spot. The bowl is small and light, and there was a good amount of grilled salmon (which was seasoned well) and the ikura added extra flavor and texture. If you're looking for something light or a small snack, this is a great option. Good pricing, too.

This place never disappoints me regardless how far of a drive it is for me to get here on the weekends. Every time I come to the burbs to visit family, I will always stop by Mitsuwa for the ramen at Santouka followed by a Hokkaido milk tea from ReLeaf cafe. The restaurants at Mitsuwa are so legit, but my ultimate favorite will always be Santouka. I love how the shio ramen is so good that you can actually drink the broth without it being too rich as well as the salmon roe rice is like a perfect match when you get the set and I can't forget the egg either. The staffs are always really nice and service is quick as well.

Not the best ramen I've had, too salty for my taste. But the pork was very tender and easy to eat. For the price point there was a lot of pork in there, but I would have liked some more vegetables or other things in the ramen. It's one of the restaurants in the food court so the ambiance is typical, noisy food court. The service was reasonably fast, but not super friendly. If I was here I'd eat it again, but I'd probably try another option in the food court first.

I ordered a small salt pork ramen. I was not impressed at all. It was $11 and some odd change for mediocre Ramen. The pork was super fatty and soup broth was lacking flavor. The portion size that I ordered was a small but as you can tell by my to go pictures, a small is more like an extra small. This was not worth the money and super overpriced. Skip this place. Very disappointed.

Amazing authentic ramen. Nothing else left to be said. Trust the locals here that keep coming back with really long wait lines, but it's worth it. Credit/debit card only

Best ramen, ever! Hokkaido is located in the food court at Mituswa. It is definitely the most popular of the restaurant options, so anticipate having to wait in line to order! They do small, medium, & large options for all of their bowls. I can't believe how reasonably priced it is too- prices range from $10-$14. Broth is fresh, noodles are great. I'm so happy I live close to this place because I'm there more often than I'd like to admit!

There wasn't a long line when we stopped by on a weekday evening. Ordered the large char siu salt $14.5 ramen and medium tonkotsu ramen $14.5. The male cashier with glasses acted strange when taking our order. My broth was creamy but not flavorful. Lots of pork and unsure why the toppings were separated. We both didn't finish our bowls as they weren't tasty. Maybe they had an off day?

I had initially stopped at the food court for some soft serve ice cream when out of the corner of my eye I see a sign that said "No Cash" over at Ramen Santouka. There's been so many missed meals over the years here all because I forgot to bring cash and this spot was always Cash Only. I was so excited to see that sign that I completely bypassed the ice cream and went for my go-to combo which is #54 - a small salt ramen with rice and egg. It tasted just like how I remembered it and it was glorious! I managed to eat a good portion of it considering I had a good sized breakfast (they say not to go food shopping on an empty stomach). I was too excited and had to celebrate with a combo even though I wasn't hungry. I'm am beyond elated!

This is our go-to spot to grab food before or after from the airport. There's so many great options at this food cart, but we always gravitate towards Ramen Santouka. My go-to order is the spicy ramen and ikura bowl. The broth has nice depth and fattiness to it with a hint of spiciness. The ikura bowl is a great side - the saltiness with flakey salmon topped over white rice is deliciousness. It's no wonder this place has been here so long and I plan to keep coming back!

Hmm.... So good. The salt ramen combo (#87) was delicious. The broth had so much flavor to it and I made sure to enjoy every drop. I'm usually all about miso ramen and this might have converted me. The noodles are a little thinner than I'm used to but still chewy and did not get soggy. The char siu was good and 2 pieces were enough for me, but if you're a meat eater- you might want to order extra. The 2 things I could've done without- the pickled plum and the egg. I wasn't sure what the pickled plum was when I saw it in my bowl. I actually had to look it up and I'm just not a fan of anything pickled- and that's my own personal preference. As for the egg, what should've been a soft boil egg was a hard boiled egg and then some. It was like a well done, hard boiled egg, which was disappointing since I love me a good, soft boiled egg with my ramen. Since I ordered a combo- I also got a small bowl of cut up char siu over rice, which was good enough for a small child.

I had tried their ramen long ago and didn't realize how famous this place got. So this time around, I read up on some reviews and got one of the more popular items -spicy miso ramen. This was super heavy though and not my favorite ramen I've had. Spice was a good level for an Asian though. Medium portion was more than enough for one too. I'll have to try the other ones next time I guess!

FINALLY MADE IT HERE! Love love love the ramen here - very authentic and reminds me a lot of Japan. Great chew and the shoyu ramen is slightly sweet and has a fantastic umami taste. I actually liked it more than the spicy miso Pork neck had a fantastic smoky flavor. We came here around 3pm on a weekend. While the front chaser says the wait might be 20 minutes, don't be fooled! We got ours in 7mins I ordered the set to come with salmon + salmon roe rice (comparing with previous pics it seems like they decreased the amount of roe a lot due to inflation ) More on Instagram: @midwestmunching

My husband's go to ramen place! This place is inside of Mitsuwa, in the food court. Line is always long but luckily it moved very fast. I think there was at least a handful of people in front of us and ordered within 10 min. You get a ticket and they'll call you when your order is up, which took maybe another 3-5 min. I grabbed a seat while my husband order given it was lunch time and if you don't get seat then you'll be stuck waiting holding your order. Luckily there was a handful of open seats. People eat and leave so turn around time is fairly quick for an open seat. We ordered the large each knowing we would want to take some home. It's a far drive for us out there :( We asked for take out container so we can save some noodle and soup for another meal before digging in. We ate a little more than half of the large each and shared the rice bowl which was filling for us. Definitely recommend for anyone looking for good ramen and don't mind the wait. I literally stood at the counter with my mouth open to order when the woman at the register looked me in the eye and put up a sign saying they'd be closed for the next 2 hours and refused to serve me. Unbelievably rude. Honestly not sure I want to eat here after this. The yakitori/takoyaki place and the tempura udon place both had WAY friendlier service.

Hands down one of our favorite ramen spot. Tried pretty much everything - personal favorite is the ones soy based. The spicy miso is phenomenal too. So flavorful - all the elements (like the soy egg) are well done! Lunch time and weekends usually have a long wait - and sometimes they sell out early too. Try to come when it's not rush hour. Food court setting - so it could get difficult to find seats. Best for casual dining.

My favorite ramen in the whole entire Chicagoland area. The line to this place is always long. Food took long to get ~ 30-35 min but that's expected for a popular place. They close 20-30 min early because the line is so long and it takes them that long to make the ramen. It's kinda funny that they have a worker stand in the back of the line with a sign that says they are close I got the spicy miso ramen which is what I usually get at this place. When I had my first bite of the noodles I thought it was to myself something was a little off like it wasn't good anymore but then I had some of the broth and pork belly that came with it and then I realized why this place had the best ramen. The broth and pork belly is so good even my girl who hates the fat from pork belly was able to eat it. She got the miso ramen and that was amazing tooo!!! I got a set box that came with plain rice and soy sauce egg with the ramen (I was hungry). There's also three different sizes for the ramen. We both got medium. Service was ok they only gave us one soup spoon for two bowls of ramen but I went up and asked for spoon and the worker happily gave us one. It looked like he was new because people kept coming up telling him they didn't get their soy sauce egg or didn't get the water. Can't blame him though he was doing so much things and fast too. There was an awkward moment because before I ordered I had to stand there for 10 min because they had too much orders in place and needed to serve the customers first before taking new orders. I think he did a great job but other people might get mad thinking why isn't he taking my order I've been standing here for 10 min blah blah blah. Before he took my order he had to ask someone if it's ok to start taking orders again so you know there's a reason why he was not taking orders. After eating their ramen I always leave the food court in a good mood because the food here is so delicious.

Seasons come and go but the superiority of Santouka remains. We have been visiting this Mitsuwa years now and the though the food court has seen a fair share of changes, Santouka has never wavered and reigns superior in its value and quality. You can't miss it nestled into the busiest corner of the food court. It's most likely the only one with a line. If you come during the lunch rush, make sure you have someone find and save a seat somewhere in the food court while someone else waist in line to order. The order numbers are given in the sequence so you'll be antsy in your pantsy as the numbers called get closer and closer. We got the Miso ramen with Char siu rice on the side and Miso ramen with fermented bean rice on the side. Firstly, this char siu rice. Mmmmmmmm. It's illustrious fatty mixed with some fluffy moist white rice. Dump a bit of that rich miso broth in there and that in itself could be a meal. Now onto the miso ramen. Welcome some more fatty pieces of pork but pork belly doused in the wonderful umami miso bath. The ramen noodles bounced off the teeth juuuust right. The fermented beans were just alright. At 13-15 buckeroons, you really can't beat the quality. It was ironic because in the grocery store part of Mitsuwa there was $15+ dissembled ramen that you had to prepare yourself. So don't miss out! TLDR: miso ramen that'll have you saying "miso satisfied" and fatty pork up the wazoo!

Noodles texture similar to the cheap grocery ramen. The pork was not tender and poorly seasoned. For the price, it doesn't include an egg. If you can drive to the city, go to Ramen Misoya and you'll set a new standard for ramen.

I've been coming to Mitsuwa marketplace for nearly 3 decades and this to me will always be one of the first and best ramen spots in the chicagoland area. Many times I don't eat there after shopping at the market because they were cash only. But due to covid that changed and now it's credit card/tap only. I guess it's a positive to come out of it as I had to stop in and grab a bowl after seeing that sign lol. I ordered the shoyu ramen set and it was every bit as good as i remembered. The flavor hit consistently on every bite and the texture of the noodles were on point. This place gets super busy during the lunch rush and during weekends but it's always worth it to me. There's been many new ramen spots popping up last 5 years but this to me will always be one of the top 3 because of their distinct flavor. Highly recommended!!

Lots of noodles! We got the spicy miso with char siu and it was good, but I've had better ramen and I think other food stalls in the food courts are more worthwhile to get inside of Mitsuwa Marketplace. The broth wasn't that spicy and more on miso savory taste.

What's not available can't be reviewed? Not sticking to hours of operation or being out of critical component both would be considered reason for 1 star rating update.

I'm so sorry to Santouka for my late review! I have been a loyal ramen customer for many years, hundreds of noodle pull pictures later and I'm finally adding a review. The one good thing that came out of Covid times is that Santouka accepts only cards now! Prior to Covid, it was always strictly cash only. Also, they do carry out which is another win because you find yourself not being able to find a seat available in the crowded food court. My go to pick is #69, miso ramen with salmon roe rice and egg. Also, my foodie bff introduced me to getting some extra blue crab rolls from the market to add to my meal and it's a game changer! Grab yourself your favorite drink from the market and stop by the sushi area and get you some rolls to go with your ramen! I have noticed that during peak times/weekends they may run out of things quickly. Some days I've gone on weekday nights and they didn't have the salmon and roe rice available. Other times I've gone they didn't have any combos available except your choice of ramen and plain rice with an egg. If you're going to visit on a weekend, go towards opening time which is 11am. I've gone at 10:30am and people were already standing in line. Whether you dine in or take out, the food quality has always been consistent for me and worth the $. Misoya was hit or miss for me many times but Santouka is consistent all the time. Make sure to take some cash tip and add it to their tip jars, everyone works really hard and definitely deserves it since we can't add tip to the cards.

I drove 5 hours JUST for this.... Ok, so I just happened to be in the area, but I LOVE this ramen shop. First had it in SoCal, but since I live in MN, this is the closest one to me. The ramen broth is creamy and rich and has JUST the perfect flavoring. My favorite is the Char-Siu rice bowl.... Ugh! The taste!! I can't stop thinking about that pork belly and rice combination. It is GOOD. There's a reason why people always line up 20-30 mins it opens up at 11:00am when I'm there on a weekend!!

This place has really gone down hill, i get using plastic spoons to reduce cost but they pick the cheapest spoons with plastic flaking off, i wonder what else they cut cost on. We used to think authentic japanese means high quality but now, its all about profit. I visited the Santouka at Harvard University and its a totally different experience, an actual restaurant with real service, clean and a much larger menu.

This is our go to place. It's no surprise that the line is normally super long. Well worth the wait though! Lines seem a bit shorter right now and there's less seating because they need to be spaced apart accordingly. There's so many combinations to choose from on the menu. My favorite is the spicy ramen with the side of rice, salmon, and roe. It may not tastes that spicy, but you'll feel the heat. My nose started running after only a few bites. The large and medium size ramen is pretty generous and can be shared if you're trying to save space for dessert and/ or more snacks.

Been going to Santouka more often since the pandemic, so it's only fair I give it more stars! We love that it's located in a food court so I can order a variety of dish from other food court restaurants as well. I like the different sizing of ramen and the combo options. We typically get the combo with either chashu bowl or salmon. I like the spicy miso ramen whenever I order ramen and I'm liking Santouka more now. It's credit card only now so no need to get cash!

After shopping around Mitsuwa marketplace, we decided to have lunch here as it was conveniently located in their food court and I happened to be craving ramen. We ordered the Char Siu spicy ramen & Char Siu rice bowl and they sure hit the spot. The depth of umami flavors of the ramen broth with all of the ingredients and perfectly cooked Char Siu made me wanting to go back for another bite each time. The rice bowl was also tasty and we left with some happy full stomachs. If you're looking for some authentic Japanese ramen, I would recommend checking this place out!

I wish I could give this hidden gem of a ramen shop more than 5 stars as a review. Most fall or winter weekends I love to wind down with a steamy bowl of their Spicy Miso Cha Shu Ramen, seasoned with the right amount of chili, pepper, pork broth, and salt. Down to the ramen noodle itself cooked al dente but chewy enough to savor. The soft-boiled marinated tea soaked eggs are a great addition to include more protein, or even an extra helping of the toriniku cha shu pork on the side for the meat lovers. If I want to splurge, I will add an order of the Ikura side dish, salmon topped with fish eggs paired with white rice. You can't go wrong ordering any combination of Japanese eats from their menu, you will always leave well-fed and satisfied.

One of my favorite ramen places. The two most important features of any good ramen are the noodles and the broth, which are both amazing here. The noodles are chewy, slurpy and delicious. The broth is very rich and well balanced. Ramen is topped with nice garnishes including marinated pork belly, crunchy bamboo, and seaweed. The combinations are well worth it if you're hungry. They also have a variety of different types of broth that keep me coming back. Definitely a go to if you're in the area. Pick up some other Japanese goodies at Mitsuwa while you're here!

This has been my favorite ramen place in the midwest for the past 10 years. I don't get to come often since I don't live nearby, but when we do, we sometimes go out of our way just to get some good ramen. Despite them only taking cash. Despite the 11-some % tax (not their fault, yes) Despite the loooong lines. Despite the self service and crowded cafeteria. I had the Shio Ramen (I always get the shio, at all the ramen places) and green onion rice combo. The price is the same if you get them separately, but if you order the combo, they'll give you a hard boiled egg in soy sauce. Personally, I wouldn't order the rice again. I'm too full with just the soup, while my hubby might like an extra bowl of something. I kinda wish they had fried rice instead. I ordered a large ramen to share with hubby who decided to experiment with tonkatsu this time around (but still wanted some ramen). The portion was pretty big, and there was a LOT of noodles, but not enough broth. This was the first time I felt cheated on the broth here, so I knocked off a star. It was nearing 2pm on a Saturday and they still had a long line so maybe they were portion controlling? Other than not getting enough of the soup, though, I'm still in love with their ramen. I wish they were closer to me.

I've been to Santouka in Seattle and in Boston but I think this may be the best one. Yes, it is a chain but there's something about this place making it so good. Compared to the other Santouka's I've been to, this little place is tucked away in a Japanese food court 15 minutes from O'Hare. The line can be long just warning you so you'll need to wait patiently in line in order to get your food. When you walk into the food court, you'll definitely know that line is for Santouka due to the popularity. I ordered the shoyu ramen with cha shu gohan for $14. The shoyu ramen was more flavorful and hearty compared to the one I usually order in Boston. Noodles were cooked to perfection, soup was warm and fresh, and chashu was soft and flavorful. Note that this place is cash only!!

I can't remember how many times I've ordered ramen here. Basically, I get a bowl of ramen every time I'm in the neighborhood. Their menu hasn't changed for years, and neither has the quality. The broth is thick, flavorful, and a little savory. With the noodles cooked to the right softness and the perfectly tender meat, this is a bowl of deliciousness that heals people's souls.

One of the best Ramen place . Quick service, menu easy to understand. The miso ramen is to die for, if you get the set, the charsiu pork over rice will not disappoint. If you're into quick quality ramen, the food court location makes it easier for you to grab some good food and go. Can be a little bit noisy, but then again the place is always packed.

The service here is always nice and quick the staff works super fast here, the Food is unbelievably good here for the price it's worth every penny, I loved the decorations and how simple the menu was to order from.

If you order this combo, it comes with the Salmon and Salmon Roe Rice Bowl. Together with the Salt Ramen bowl is simply heavenly. They use to take cash only, but recently when they reopened after the pandemic they now take credit cards and also to-go orders. It is worth the trip from the city!

This place has become so bad, 2 out of 3 times we visited the last 2 weeks they ran out of broth mid day, and the other time they have no char siu so only regular is offered and needs a 50 minute wait, mid day. There aren't even that many people waiting, and they announced 50 minute wait after ordering. Totally unacceptable, if you are not prepared to serve customers then don't even bother open your shop.

I visited my in laws in Chicago. I tried this ramen place and I loved it. Highly recommended. Must try. Prices are very reasonable. You can only tip with cash and cannot include in the credit card bill.
