Hoko Hong Kong Cafe - Review - Shoreditch - London - The Infatuation

"If you’re on Brick Lane and want to double down on the chaos, noise, and occasional stray elbow grazing your rib, go to Hoko Hong Kong Cafe. Inspired by Hong Kong’s cha chaan teng—teahouses where the food is quick, cheap, and casual—this revolving door of a restaurant is open all day. And it’s one of our favourite spots in the area. In the narrow entryway that can fit two thrifted-out tourists side-by-side if bags are maneuvered, the strategising begins. Big pictures of glistening french toast hang above the kitchen, pork chops sizzle on skillets, and pouches of silky, sweet milk tea sit on ice. Orders are obsessed over, then tapped into a self-service machine, and when your table is ready, brisk but friendly staff ferry you down into the diner-like dining room for a fun, fast meal. video credit: Sinéad Cranna Groups monopolise the booths and everyone else takes what they can get, cramming onto stools and hunching over mismatched plates. It’s best to stick to the signature dishes, like photo-perfect, soft, sweet french toast, finished with a perfect pat of swiftly melting butter and an extra glug of syrup from the jug on the table. And the meaty, moreish Hong Kong-style pork chop with sticky rice and a gooey fried egg. But really, all the food, like the snug basement-level room, is supremely comforting. Food Rundown Tofu Steak Bun A crusty, soft white bun is the perfect vehicle for soaking up sauce. You’ve got the choice of scallion or black pepper sauce, and we like the lightly spiced kick of the black pepper one. The tofu is nice and this will do the trick if a hunger-based carb meltdown is impending, but there are better things on the menu. photo credit: Sinéad Cranna Hoko Pork Chop With Egg & Rice We’d like this dish to console us on cold days, sick days, and all the meh days in between. It’s as simple as it sounds, but each element is just right. The rice is sticky and fluffy, the egg has a runny, bright orange yolk (the only sauce needed), and the pork chop is juicy and crisp. photo credit: Sinéad Cranna Hong Kong Classic French Toast This is what most people come for and it’s a worthy star item. Thick, with a giddy mixture of syrup and salty butter flowing down the sides, this french toast tastes as good as it looks. It’s also surprisingly light, which isn’t to say you won’t be full. And it isn’t to say it’s not incredibly sweet, but it’s not at all stodgy. photo credit: Sinéad Cranna Salt & Pepper Crinkle Fries Decent enough fries that we like for the nostalgia of the shape, but wish they had more seasoning. photo credit: Sinéad Cranna Hong Kong Milk Tea If you come here, you get the milk tea. It’s smooth, it’s sweet, and if you opt for the cold option, it comes in a very fun, branded pouch. photo credit: Sinéad Cranna" - Sinéad Cranna

Very authentic Hong Kong style! Tastes really good except the HK French toast is too thick, making the inner layer too soft. Prepare on peak hours you will need to share the table with someone else (very authentic Hong Kong style of services but def wasn’t a usual thing in the UK) highly recommended the milk tea and yin yang!

Small place with great vibes. You order and pay via a kiosk before sitting down. The food came very fast. The pork chop with rice with either pepper or spring onion sauce were great. Pork wasn’t dry and tender. The portion size was also very generous. The char siu beigel was not bad, but the bagel was a bit tough. French toast was great not very sweet. You can add however much syrup you want on it at the table. Service was also very good and fast. Would definitely come back to try more.

We ordered the set menu breakfast items as well as an iced red bean milk drink. For a genuine take on that HongKong breakfast experience this is definitely the place to try. The food came fast and hot, the scrambled eggs were divine, the staff were on the orders straight away, with everyones meals, not just ours. We had the macaroni, scrambled eggs and tomato soup and macaroni, ham and broth with sweetcorn and toasted bun all washed down with the red bean and milk drink. Overall a great alternative breakfast, highly recommended.

First time visiting HOKO after having it saved on my London food list and it was absolutely worth it! From quick and friendly service, allowing us to enjoy the food and the atmosphere to having most comforting and delicious food. My friend and I haven’t been to Hong Kong but somehow HOKO transported us there thanks to their authentic vibe! Highly recommend!

AMAZING. I shared two dishes with my friend, the pork chop with rice and the french toast with peanut butter - it was absolutely delicious. Service is super friendly and supportive. Nice retro ambience. Highly recommend!

As someone from Hong Kong, cha chaan teng culture has always been a part of my life. Walking into HOKO felt like stepping straight into a 90s Hong Kong movie, from the decor, the uniform, to even the utensils, every detail is thoughtfully recreated. It’s clear how much time, cost, and more importantly, effort it takes to authentically replicate a true Hong Kong tea house experience in London. And for that alone, HOKO deserves 5 stars. I ordered the hot milk tea, pork chop rice and instant noodles. Everything was served hot, tasted just right, and brought back so many memories of home. I’ve heard their Hong Kong-style French toast is a must-try, and I’ll definitely be back for it next time.

As a Cantonese native, I was eager to try HOKO Hong Kong Cafe, and it did not disappoint. The food and drinks taste remarkably authentic, reminiscent of the flavors I enjoyed throughout my childhood in Hong Kong. The atmosphere is delightful, and the service is impressively quick. My only suggestion would be slightly larger portions for the HK breakfast set to make it even more satisfying. Overall, I had a lovely brunch that brought back cherished memories. Highly recommend!

Lovely little spot, very unassuming. Good service, friendly staff. The food came out really quickly. We had an assortment of wings, fried squid, HK toast and a beef satay noodle dish. Everything was well cooked, the chicken wings were super soft and so tender, the HK toast wasn't too heavy and the fried squid was well cooked and seasoned. The beef satay was nice but didn't feel outstanding.
