Hoko Hong Kong Cafe - Review - Shoreditch - London - The Infatuation

"If you’re on Brick Lane and want to double down on the chaos, noise, and occasional stray elbow grazing your rib, go to Hoko Hong Kong Cafe. Inspired by Hong Kong’s cha chaan teng—teahouses where the food is quick, cheap, and casual—this revolving door of a restaurant is open all day. And it’s one of our favourite spots in the area. In the narrow entryway that can fit two thrifted-out tourists side-by-side if bags are maneuvered, the strategising begins. Big pictures of glistening french toast hang above the kitchen, pork chops sizzle on skillets, and pouches of silky, sweet milk tea sit on ice. Orders are obsessed over, then tapped into a self-service machine, and when your table is ready, brisk but friendly staff ferry you down into the diner-like dining room for a fun, fast meal. video credit: Sinéad Cranna Groups monopolise the booths and everyone else takes what they can get, cramming onto stools and hunching over mismatched plates. It’s best to stick to the signature dishes, like photo-perfect, soft, sweet french toast, finished with a perfect pat of swiftly melting butter and an extra glug of syrup from the jug on the table. And the meaty, moreish Hong Kong-style pork chop with sticky rice and a gooey fried egg. But really, all the food, like the snug basement-level room, is supremely comforting. Food Rundown Tofu Steak Bun A crusty, soft white bun is the perfect vehicle for soaking up sauce. You’ve got the choice of scallion or black pepper sauce, and we like the lightly spiced kick of the black pepper one. The tofu is nice and this will do the trick if a hunger-based carb meltdown is impending, but there are better things on the menu. photo credit: Sinéad Cranna Hoko Pork Chop With Egg & Rice We’d like this dish to console us on cold days, sick days, and all the meh days in between. It’s as simple as it sounds, but each element is just right. The rice is sticky and fluffy, the egg has a runny, bright orange yolk (the only sauce needed), and the pork chop is juicy and crisp. photo credit: Sinéad Cranna Hong Kong Classic French Toast This is what most people come for and it’s a worthy star item. Thick, with a giddy mixture of syrup and salty butter flowing down the sides, this french toast tastes as good as it looks. It’s also surprisingly light, which isn’t to say you won’t be full. And it isn’t to say it’s not incredibly sweet, but it’s not at all stodgy. photo credit: Sinéad Cranna Salt & Pepper Crinkle Fries Decent enough fries that we like for the nostalgia of the shape, but wish they had more seasoning. photo credit: Sinéad Cranna Hong Kong Milk Tea If you come here, you get the milk tea. It’s smooth, it’s sweet, and if you opt for the cold option, it comes in a very fun, branded pouch. photo credit: Sinéad Cranna" - Sinéad Cranna

HOKO was delicious and a great stop. I especially loved the LTO iced tea with oat milk foam. Genuinely so good and a standout drink for me. The food overall was very good, though some dishes do lean a bit rich, so it’s something to keep in mind depending on what you order. Service was quick and the staff were accommodating, which made it an easy and enjoyable stop. The space itself has a lively, energetic feel and almost feels like being inside an actual food market rather than a traditional sit-down restaurant. A fun, casual spot with great drinks and solid food, especially if you’re looking for something fast but flavorful.

All round well-deserved 5 stars 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟 Surprised at the small entrance to see how atmospheric and large the dining room at the back was. If you’ve seen any Wong Kar-Wai films, that’s the vibe- just like the Goldfinch Café. Beautiful venue for a breakfast- we also tried the Yuenyeung tea (鴛鴦), a mix of coffee and Hong Kong-style milk tea with condensed milk which was delicious. Everyone there was so friendly, service was easy and everything arrived in really good time. The perfect experience. To note and thanks go to our waiter Berry who made us feel so welcome and showed us and explained various dishes as they came out. Definitely going back soon for a Hoko Hong Kong breakfast. Thank you all for such a lovely time 🙏🏼

Honestly was very impressed with this spot, as someone who frequents Hong Kong yearly I always get the blues and cravings for cafe food whenever I’m back in the uk for too long. Firstly the interior and aesthetics are sooo clean, it depicts an olden day Hong Kong diner with the staff uniform matching the same theme too. Though there are queues lining up from opening throughout the day it seems to get progress pretty smoothly. The variety is not too big not too small so you can tell there are obvious signature dishes on the menu, I personally really like the fried squid tentacles as they were very rich in umami and crispy with the soy sauce chicken wings which are like the ones I had at home when I was younger. The portions are surprisingly also quite big and filling which is great with a side when dining with others, I personally preferred the cha siu over the pork chop as the pork chop was quite filling. Noodles were great and the egg was perfectly silky. Price wise obviously is more expensive than cha chaan tengs in Hong Kong but definitely worth the experience the nostalgia and taste of Hong Kong in London for a decent price point. They also have their in house homemade Hong Kong milk teas! Would definitely go again!!

Delicious Hong Kong cuisine in London (Brick Lane). I had the scrambled eggs with pork and the Hong Kong style french toast. My boyfriend had the curry which he really enjoyed. The scrambled eggs with Char Siu pork was perfectly cooked and very balanced with the aromatic pork. The Hong Kong style french toast with melting salted butter and stuffed with peanut butter was SO GOOD!! Matched perfectly well with the milk tea.

TL;DR: Very good with soul Very nostalgic place that brings a Hong Kong classic to London. Staff were friendly, efficiency and take the initiative. As an example, they have only one ordering kiosk at the door, so to speed up, one of the team manually added orders via a different tablet. The place has charm and soul along with good food. Char Siu was very fatty (despite not necessarily looking it) and a step above marinating at home. When my only criticisms is the poor cell reception and not being closer to me so I can stop by more regularly, you know it's a great place. If the team are reading this, thanks for a great experience! Please consider adding 焗豬扒飯, really miss that lol

Absolutely love everything about this place. Food tasted like I was in Hong Kong, absolutely delicious, the Swiss chicken wings and the cha siu were so nice. Service was really quick too, very impressed. Definitely will go back next time I'm in London.

It has only taken me approximately 2 years to finally make it down to this Hong Kong (HK) Cha Chaan Teng 茶餐廳 on that 20 minute train journey. To make up for it, went twice in one week. The attraction being I love a curry and can't really turn down a HK curry. True to their word, it was a very authentic HK curry that you get from a local HK cafe with very authentic pork chop taste....that seasoning is so so familiar. I tried all 3 pork chop curry dishes, whether the fried egg or scrambled egg with rice, or the bun. As a warning, bun a bit messy if you are eating it with hands etc, so take some wet wipes. A part of me now feels like I need to try the tofu version...still a few days left to do so. I think of the three I tried, my favourite is the fried egg version, with the crunchy potatoes and green peppers. The scrambled egg version, very thick fluffy egg. Kind of reminds me of a ham and egg sandwich 火腿蛋治. The iced lemon tea was again very authentic and tasted just like the ones out in HK. It is down to that sugary syrup and I guess the right type of tea bag. The decor does make you feel like you walked into a cafe in actual HK, reminiscence of the 80s and 90s. Even the music playing in background were classics from 80s and 90s/00s. A mix of Leslie Cheung, Sammi Cheng, the heavenly four kings i.e. Aaron Kwok and Leon Lai. For someone who doesn't know Cantonese you be lost in a foreign language, but for those who do, you'll be quietly singing along in your head. In some ways, this place could provide you with what feels like a small trip down memory lane until you get out to the real HK. Think next time I give the black cow or white cow a try or the classic salted lime 7up. And maybe a takeaway pouch of 鴛鴦 for the road.

Small place with great vibes. You order and pay via a kiosk before sitting down. The food came very fast. The pork chop with rice with either pepper or spring onion sauce were great. Pork wasn’t dry and tender. The portion size was also very generous. The char siu beigel was not bad, but the bagel was a bit tough. French toast was great not very sweet. You can add however much syrup you want on it at the table. Service was also very good and fast. Would definitely come back to try more.
