This is one of two locations in Oregon regularly projecting 70 mm film on a huge, curved screen. This weekend we enjoyed “interstellar“ on 70 mm. It is one of the films the Theater maintains in its permanent archive and periodically schedules. The only negative statement is that you need to arrive early enough to get good seats. I was surprised that the theater was essentially sold out For this Sunday afternoon matinee. Although tickets were available when it opened for the showing, those of us with advanced tickets were able to skip the line and enter and select our seats immediately. The projection quality is superb and the sound system is impressive, yielding, a thoroughly pleasurable viewer experience. The popcorn was wonderful with real, pure butter on request. The beers were pretty good as well. A negative is that street parking around the theater is limited for these filmings, and everything has either a two hour or 10 minute limit. I left the car for about three hours for this two hour and 49 minute film, but was not ticketed. I don’t know if they are locally forgiving in the Hollywood neighborhood or if I was just lucky. Taking public transportation might not be a bad idea, depending on your personal situation.

Google
One of the best theaters I’ve been to!! The staff were great. The prices for the concessions are way cheaper than a mainstream modern cinema. I watched Donnie Darko in 35mm, and it was really hard to watch something else after that experience. I loved everything about this place! Highly recommended to both locals and visitors!

Susie Winters

Google
When in Portland, you must hunt out this incredible independent cinema. Didn't have time to see a film but peruse the foyer and talk to the staff. It was showing some classic horror for Halloween and was busling with customers. Next time I go back it's a must go to and see a film.

Luke Olsen

Google
A really cool venue with tons of history and old cinema gear on display. Sat in the second row in the upper theater and it was still a nice viewing experience.

Google
Love this theater! I’m a member and have been going here for years. Great selection of popular and indie features, friendly staff, and it’s usually very clean. Upstairs concessions can take FOREVER though since there is one register so you’re better off going downstairs.

Jules Zumhagen

Google
Hands down the best theater in all of Portland. From a fantastic facade to an even better selection of films, the only thing you're left wanting for is more space for even more showings! You'll get classics in their original format, the occasional live scoring, special event screenings like the first US theatrical screening of Gundam's War in the Pocket, and of course the big new releases as well. Every time I visit I'm reminded just how spoiled I am to have this place so close. The Hollywood Theater is a genuine treasure of this city and a must visit for any lover of films.

Google
Very old, magical theater. Amazing, brilliant programming. Support of local and international creators, all fans bases, and basically all humans. Still reasonable prices on everything from admission to popcorn. And if you are a member of their non-profit, you support them and get firsties on nice things! A gem in Portland's crown.

AJ Rogers

Google
Second time going tonight and had a great time seeing Fright Night. Looking forward to seeing more films there on 35mm. Theatre is gorgeous and super friendly staff.

Yelp
Dropped in for trivia night that my friend partakes in. This is a great venue. The staff were proper nice and they had great snacks. The cider I tried was crispy. The movie trivia event was so much fun. We opted for the 2nd one so it was less people. Good vibes all around

Yelp
Portland's only non-profit theater! Members get a discount on tickets, and also get a bunch of other great perks- free passes, popcorn and much more. I do recommend becoming a member, not just for the perks, but because it helps the theater continue to be the unique and incredible place that it is. They show a variety of both first run, and all manner of other types of films- grind house, classic comedies and lots of others. Come see RRR once a month!

Yelp
The Brutalist. Packed theater, great movie, very good popcorn. Gotta love the vibe of this Portland icon.

Yelp
Hollywood Theatre really is a treat. The website gives a great list of their upcoming movies which you can book online, and the space itself inside is very clean. At this point I've been to almost a dozen movies here and the feeling is that I don't really need to go to an AMC or other chain again. I love that they have specials now and again like Kung Fu Theatre which I'm 100% on board with now. Definitely worth checking out. (Also - you can get pizza there and eat it in the theatre with your other snacks, so cool!)

Yelp
Historic, classical theater from a bygone age, when going to the movies wasn't just day-to-day occurrence: it was an event. A social gathering. Hell, it was basically a party! I had one of the greatest cinematic experiences of my life here, watching a sold out showing of my favorite movie, "Seven Samurai", in the presence of other cinephiles who "got it"; who appreciated it in the same way as myself. People who not only just enjoyed the movie, but understood it; people who gasped at its dramatic moments; people who wept at a beloved character's death; people who laughed at the jokes of a 70 year old, black and Japanese-language film with subtitles. Bring back Samurai Sundays! And intermissions! Being able to grab a slice of a beer, a slice of pizza, and use the restroom without missing a single frame needs to become the norm again! Marvel and James Cameron have made the three-hour-plus movie en vogue again, so can we revive the tradition of including a director-approved potty-and-snack break, please?

Kristen C.

Yelp
I had been looking forward to checking out this theater after hearing how great it was from all the locals. It did not disappoint. The building's architecture is absolutely gorgeous and the inside still holds all the charm of a 1920s theater. The staff were incredibly helpful and welcoming, especially when I couldn't get my ticket to display on my phone. After I dealt with that, I grabbed a small popcorn and headed upstairs to the theater. I thought I had taken photos of the interior, but I guess not. I'll have to remember to do that next time I'm in town. I had a great time seeing The First Omen in 35mm here. I can't wait to go back the next time I visit.

Yelp
Offering a diverse range of programming, the Hollywood Theater has become a treasured institution dedicated to entertaining and educating the community through the art of film. A visit to the theater website is highly recommended in order to understand the scope of the organization's offerings. Some notes about the Hollywood Theatre: - The theater opened in 1926 as a 1500 seat silent movie picture house. HollywoodTheatre.org presents an informative outline of the theater's history, allowing for a better appreciation of the neighborhood, architecture and cultural impact of the institution. - The theater has concessions, as well as a novel "Pie Hole" pizza window with the neighboring Sizzle Pie restaurant. Several of the auditoriums offer bench-like tables for pizza and drinks. - There are a number of great restaurants in the vicinity offering excellent dinner options. - There is no official parking, so patrons are required to fend for themselves. The area north of Sandy (across the street) has lots of street parking. The audio and visual capabilities of the theater auditoriums are state of the art, now offering presentations of 70mm films in all of their intended glory. The Hollywood Theatre is worth a visit, and your continued financial support.

Yelp
The Hollywood Theatre is a local nonprofit movie theater that shows new releases, as well as classic films, but honestly, it's so much more than that! Magic happens at this theater. This is a place where you'll see Quentin Tarantino jump on stage and share what he loves about filmmaking. This is a place where you'll get to see rare films and special prints on 70mm. This is a place that truly loves and celebrates film, and the community and energy of this theater are pure artistic inspiration. It's truly a Portland gem, and there's really nowhere else quite like it. When watching a film here, you won't see lots of annoying previews and you'll rarely see anyone on their phone or talking through the film, because the people that go here really love and appreciate film. They also love good food too! They have Sizzle Pie and Salt and Straw on hand, as well as amazing local beers!

Joel C.

Yelp
A great movie palace that has pretty eclectic programming. It's in the middle of the Hollywood district so there are lots of great stores, bars and restaurants close by. The only negative is that there is only metered street parking so that can be a hassle. I've been there several times. It's walking distance to the Hollywood MAX stop so it's very convenient to NOT drive there.
google avatar

John G.

Yelp
Big and impressive old theater. Has a cool, diverse schedule of programming. If I lived in the area, I'd probably see a ton of films here.
google avatar

Milo M.

Yelp
Great people, stellar popcorn, diverse selection of movies. Docked a star because bathrooms and carpet are a bit worn.
google avatar

Yelp
One of the more serviceable local theaters in Portland for sure. Decent sized screens and better sound* than you'll find at most of the indies around town. I haven't been to any of them, but I've heard they host fun events and themed nights too, which is big bonus points. *I do wish somebody that works there would do something about the seats though. The squeaking is out of control. All for keeping the original seats or whatever but hit 'em with some WD-40 or something man. I saw Talk To Me there the other day and a lot of the dialogue became unintelligible. Totally killed any tension the move intended to create

Yelp
i really love hollywood theater!! they have such great programming, from new releases, 70/35mm, re-runs, and the amazing bi-monthly production that is queer horror. they also have great concessions, including slices from sizzle pie!
google avatar

Alana C.

Yelp
I love this theater. I'll slide right into the highlights: the theater is old-school funky and just cool. The staff is uber-friendly. Concessions are unique! Craft beer & wine selection, CBD water, etc. You've gotta try a bag of buttered popcorn with nutritional yeast sprinkled on top. The movie chairs are comfortable, recline, and have beverage holders; there's also tables in the theater around most of the seats so you can place food items or hang your purse. I do want to point out the restrooms are gender neutral and there is only 1 restroom upstairs with 2 stand up urinals and 1 stall with a toilet. It's quite close quarters, just FYI.

Yelp
Best movie theater in Portland. Maybe the best in the country. Maybe the best in the world! The Hollywood is a beautiful silent era movie palace that's been lovingly restored. They play everything from repertory staples, to original programming, to top notch first run movies. The concessions are cheap (at least compared to your average theater), the staff is friendly, and it's a nonprofit so you can feel good about your dollars helping to preserve the arts. I'll be seeing movies here until the day I die.

Yelp
One of my favorite theaters in the world. Every time we treat ourselves to one of their events, we feel like we've stepped back in time to the 20's. There is so much character here, you need to go see it for yourself.

Yelp
One of the best movie experiences in Portland! I've been coming here for 18 years and still love everything about it! A lovingly restored old time theatre with a street facade that is an icon on NE Sandy. The Hollywood Theatre runs a diverse plethora of 35mm and 75mm films, independent, classics and recently released. The largest theatre is on the first floor with two smaller, more intimate theatres up the ramp (second floor.) When I first moved to a Portland, having a beer or glass of wine at the movies was a fun unique experience! Made even better by the low price of admission and fresh popcorn with real melted butter. Back in the day, you could get all this for about $10. Now, 18 years later, it's only $13 and the still the best deal around. There are several beers on tap, this is Portland afterall! And always a hard cider for people like me who don't enjoy beer, and wine along with the non alcoholic drinks as well. There is a Pizza Window connecting to SizzlePie who makes a legit slice, and even Ruby Jewel ice cream, which I think is better than the Portland chain that has all the lines. The seats are comfy and stadium style so the view is clear. Plenty of room for drinks and snacks. I used to live in the neighborhood so would go catch a flick on my own all the time. If I went on a Monday or a Tuesday evening, I could show up just a few minutes prior, get my snacks and still get a good seat. This is a wonderful venue and I hope it remains part of the Hollywood neighborhood forever. It's a real neighborhood/community theatre.

Yelp
Always a great time and well worth the money. A cultural gem and a vital venue for great films (and some gloriously terrible ones) past and present.
google avatar

Yelp
Such an incredible building! I've been driving past I it for years, and always wanted to go inside. I saw they were showing parasite last week, so i decided to check it out. We arrived early, too early in fact. Box office opens 30 minutes prior to a showing so we grabbed sizzle pie beforehand. The inside isn't exciting as I thought, we were in the theatre up to the left when you enter. Not sure if the other theatre is the grander of the two? I enjoyed learning a bit of history before the showing, only 5 minutes of previews as well. Enjoyed the show, but the best part is the entrance.
google avatar

Jayne H.

Yelp
One of the best in all of Portland. Seating is cozy, the cider on tap is delicious, the pizza is good too. Overall it's a fantastic spot to watch movies. Highly recommend.
google avatar

Yelp
The Hollywood Theatre opened its doors in 1926, with a showing of the silent film MORE PAY - LESS WORK. A 1,500-seat silent movie palace complete with an 8-piece orchestra and organist, the Hollywood was the last venue in Portland built as both a vaudeville house and a movie theatre. Designed by Bennes & Herzog architects of Portland, a local advertisement called it a "palace of luxury, comfort, and entertainment unsurpassed by any theatre on the Coast." It proved such a popular destination that Portland's Hollywood District ultimately took its name from the Theatre. Attention was brought to the Theatre when it was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, but by the late '80s, the Hollywood had fallen into disrepair, and many of the classic film formats had been lost. In 1997, the non-profit Film Action Oregon (FAO) purchased the Hollywood Theatre and began to restore the neglected theatre into the local treasure it once was.

Yelp
Can't believe I haven't written a review of Hollywood Theatre yet! This is a top spot in Portland to watch a film. The theatre is gorgeous and is such a cool cinematic atmosphere. I love feeling the history of this building every time I'm there. If you're someone who eschews main stream Hollywood movies, this is definitely your place. B-Movie trivia? Queer Horror? Beer-themed movie nights? 70mm classics? They'll have some moving picture theme that fits your motive. Standard movies run $9. For some showings and special events, expect to pay more. At the end of the day, if you're going to pay $9 for a movie, why bother going to the mall when you can come here? (My answer is cause I don't love B-movies as much as other Portlanders).
google avatar

PH D.

Yelp
Best 1st experience at this movie theater!!! Thank you for staying open through the pandemic.
google avatar

Evan G.

Yelp
It's the best movie theater in Portland. Duh! The main room is the nicest screen in the city. It's a bit not up to snuff only being equipped with 2K Digital Projection but it also happens to be equipped with 70mm and 35mm Film projectors so it all evens out. The popcorn isn't great but the pizza and beer are excellent. I love this place. Prices are low and the presentation level is high. What's not to like about going to the Hollywood Theatre?

Yelp
Great programming. Comfortable seats. Delicious pizza courtesy of Sizzle Pie. Parking sucks but it's not too Bad.

Yelp
Visiting from Texas and we decided to see a movie here as my cousin lives nearby and loves.coming here. This building is magnificent and the ambiance was fantastic. I was not sure what to expect exactly but once we were in the theater I was impressed by the comfort of the seats as well as the availability of a table to put things on in front of us. Sound and picture quality were great and will totally come back next time I am in town.

Yelp
This historic theater is perfection - from the staff and volunteers to the wonderful mixture of movies they bring in. One of my favorite things/places in Portland!

Yelp
I've been here three times and I really want to love this theater. On paper this theater is amazing, but my experience here has always left a foul taste in my mouth. If I were one of the major donors of this theater, I'd be concerned with their staff and policies. First the pros: They actually show film and support indie/art/international. Love it The building has a great history/architecture. They have cheap beer and great pizza (which is actually Sizzle Pie). The cons : 1.) Seats are old, uncomfortable, and stained. 2.) I came here by myself for a showing of the new Tarantino "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood." Admittedly I showed up only 5 minutes early on a Wednesday at 330 but was hoping to get a decent seat since it was only one person. Bought a ticket and there were NO good seats. Either I'm way in the front or squished between two large people. No big deal. I'll just get my money back and come another time. It didn't take me two minutes to politely ask for a refund. The ticket stand guy called over a "manager" (I don't think he was) who then said if they have available seats then there are no refunds. I wasn't the only one asking. I wasn't rude. The previews hadn't even started. Hollywood Theater could bolt down a seat in front of a pillar and say "there are seats left so no refund." I come to this theater for the experience. If I just wanted to see the movie, I could pirate it or see it somewhere else. And by the way, most other theaters will refund if the movie hasn't started. 3.) It took me a while to get over that experience, but my S.O. convinced me to go back for "The Lighthouse." I got there 30 minutes early and everything was great. The movie really intrigued us so we went to sit upstairs in their lounge to discuss it (as it was 41 degrees outside). We decided to get some snacks but the concession guy said they "don't really sell things to hang out." Alright dude. I'll take the hint. I know this theater runs on donations and apparently they must. They obviously don't want my business or want people discussing film (why have a lounge?). I'm just trying to keep warm and give y'all business. There are a ton of other independent theaters in Portland. I want to like you Hollywood Theater, but you need to get it together.

Yelp
The place is awesome. For an old theater the chairs are super comfy and I have a bad back. The tickets are a reasonable price. The popcorn is really good and cheap. Drinks there's beer, ginger beer, pop, lemonade... You can get pizza or candy. The staff is nice and talkative. They have fun movie nights and events. Movie bingo anyone? Kong Fu nights? There doesn't seem to be a bad seat to watch the movie from. The sound is great. Where else can you see old 8mm film? Re live movies older than you?
google avatar

James C.

Yelp
My second favorite theater in Portland Great movies. Awesome sound 70mm camera, which makes for memorable films FINALLY some some awesome vegan pizza.
google avatar

Heather L.

Yelp
Great place to watch a movie in an old theatre. One of my favorite theaters in Portland!
google avatar

Morissa P.

Yelp
This is hands down the best old time theater experience you can have. It is a non-profit so the prices are fair. They have a little "whole in the wall" to the pizza place next door if you are craving a slice, and the popcorn has real butter. Yes, REAL butter not the fake oily product called "Real Butter." Good beer and wine prices as well. Just all around reasonable goodies! They show a lot of films that do not get shown at larger theaters as well as the popular ones. There are three screens, but if you have the opportunity to see a movie that was filmed in wide format on their 70mm screen you are in for a treat! Breathtaking for any cinema fan.
google avatar

Sean T.

Yelp
Great place to see a movie. Saw "A Christmas Story", the atmosphere and ambiance of the theater made the movie so much better to watch. Everyone there is amazing and the crowd are fun folks. Seats are super comfy and the place is very well kept for it's age.

Yelp
**WC** Many things have changed in the year since I wrote my last review... First, I started seeing even more movies at the Hollywood Theater - especially Kung Fu Theater and I even had friends meetups for it and everything. So much so that I decided to become a member because duh! As a member you get emails from the theater including special ones for members only for special screenings. Membership is under $21 per month. You get free tickets to almost everything for yourself and a fist full of guess passes. You also get a free member's size popcorn every time you visit...I love popcorn...have I mentioned I REALLY REALLY love popcorn and I do love theirs. Sooooo, then I lost the ability to walk and am stuck in a wheelchair and after talking to friends and looking online I know I can go to see stuff no sweat in the lower main theater but not upstairs. Imagine my surprise (and the theater's) that they got early showings of Alien Covenant. WHAAAAAT??? OMGOMGOMG....I was soooooo excited that I really did not read the spot which said that the 8pm showing was in the upper theater and the 11pm was the one in the lower theater. I did not find that out until we got to the theater. BUUUUMMER...they offered, no sweat to trade the tickets out for the 11pm but one of the guys who works there kept asking if I really wanted to go to the 8pm showing and that they would be able to get me in no sweat. Sure enough...he and my husband got me up the stairs and up the ramp into the theater no problem. It was a touch scary but whoa! And the movie was great. He hopped to it to help us back down at the end too. Just wow....bigtime thank you!! Being in a chair is scary sometimes going places so that was some serious awesome!

Yelp
I realized when I started writing reviews, the Hollywood Theatre was definitely one of the firsts. Boy oh boy have times changed! I feel like my old review is wayyyyyy out of date and is due for a major update.... First off, this is probably the best non profit organization I have ever been a part of. Since they had a recent change of programming, new program director, and going on a new direction, this has been my main theater of choice. There is something for everyone since we offer a wide variety of programming. I have now been a regular volunteer since April 2011. Since then I have seen a boost of improvements of the theater and the attendance has skyrocketed since. First off, long gone are the rusty and uncomfortable red seats in all 3 auditoriums. New are the donated comfy reclining seats from Regal when the Broadway Theater shuttered its doors. We held a campaign drive to help raise funds to have them installed. It was the fastest and definitely successful campaign that benefited all attendees. The upstairs auditoriums have more leg room plus tables in each aisle that have a similar layout to the Laurelhurst. The wide array of beers of tap and wine have also won regulars and newcomers. The prices are reasonable and paired with the best popcorn with real butter in town you got yourself a winner. Customers also have the option of buying caramel popcorn or the recently included "Masala" popcorn that are both made locally. Long gone is 50 licks ice cream and because of me the theater now sells "Scoop" ice cream bars :-). Soon pizza will be offered by "Atomic Pizza" so stay tuned!!!! There are many new programs that are offered monthly to appeal to anyone that may be interested in attending. The "classic" film series and "family" film series are welcoming additions. They are usually aired during the weekends at matinee hour so prices are totally reasonable. Live Comedy hosted by Ian Carmel is always a big hit and once a month "kung fu cinema" and "Grindhouse presents" usually have packed shows. For those - arrive early to guarantee good seats. Membership is the best deal for discount tickets and exclusive benefits such as free parking, free popcorn, and invites to special screenings. Renovations continue to take place with the "marquee" kickstarter campaign going in full swing. Volunteering has become the norm for me and it is great to see others like me who do like volunteering at the theater. For a while we had to suspend orientations because shifts were filling up fast as soon as the schedule would be available. That shows that the community has been a huge support for this landmark theater. I plan on continuing to volunteer and attend as a Hollywood member as long as the theater continues to stick around!

Yelp
I really enjoyed watching a movie at the Hollywood Theater. It was my first time there, and I plan in going there more often. The inside is beautiful! It has a retro charm about it with a wonderful lobby area you can sit upstairs and enjoy a beer or conversation if you wanted. In the actual theater room, the seats were pretty comfortable and I watched a 3 hr movie. Half the theater has small tables which was pretty convenient if you have a beer or pizza. Also you can slide in front of the table instead of making others stand up if you are sitting away from the aisle. *but be careful cause if you do cause its not exactly level and you don't want to be spraining your ankle. They have great selection of craft beers for $4. They have pizza from the place next door. And with a matinee for $5, my movie was a definite score!

Yelp
Where do I begin? This theatre is iconic. I came as a kid, and I'm a member as an adult. I've seen movies with my parents as a child, as well as on school trips, and now I'm lucky enough to have seen several films on 70mm, including Lawrence of Arabia and 2001: A Space Odyssey. This wonderful theatre is one of a handful in the world even capable of such showings. The staff and volunteers are super friendly, the pizza and popcorn are great, member dues are tax deductible and pretty damn low if you ask me. Every time I see a movie at Regal that I could've seen here (like last night, ugh) I always feel so guilty. I'm here about once a week, sometimes more. I'm here right now. Thanks for being such an important part of the community!
google avatar

Alice L.

Yelp
[Visitor from CA review] I adore landmark theaters. On every trip I take, I try to visit one and I had a wonderful time here, when I attended the Northwest Animation Festival, which featured 4 days of international short films. Each night required different tickets, so I chose a night which featured 4 hours of international short films for only $15. What a treat it was!! The seats were very comfortable, the screen large, and the theater was clean. You're part of the historic movie theater experience, that's been here since 1926! A non-profit organization runs this theater, so I am completely supportive of helping the local community. The concession stand also features Salt & Straw ice cream, Atomic Pizza by the slice, and beer. It's SO Portland. Of course, with my 4 hours there, I definitely had some pizza and popcorn :)
google avatar

Erin L.

Yelp
The Hollywood is such a great theater! It has comfortable seats, the staff is very friendly and it has reasonably priced tickets and concession food, which include pizza, beer and Salt and Straw ice cream along with popcorn, soda and candy. The best part about it is that they have cool events and show older movies, which you can be kept up to date on with their newsletter.
google avatar

John K.

Yelp
There is moviegoing, and there is the dreadful shopping mall "entertainment" experience. The Hollywood is true moviegoing. They are respectful of what goes on the screen, and the fantastic terra cotta facade welcomes visitors to the experience. Although it's harder to see these days, due to nearby construction projects, it's worthwhile to step back and enjoy the view of the outside of the theater, whether you're just wandering the neighborhood or actually heading in to see a film. Be it a 70mm projection event, or digital content, everyone at the Hollywood gets to go to the movies.
google avatar

Cindy I.

Yelp
Fun and different movies. Good to get ok the email updates so you don't miss anything. Pretty decent seats updated in the last couple of years. My husband felt they reclined too much. The more weight the more it reclines. The smaller theaters can sometimes here sound from the next door small theater. The large theater has a really high definition screen. Just saw the cat video fest there and it looked amazing, plus tons of fun! The pizza window is very handy and they do have good popcorn. Parking is easy within a couple of blocks. Love the new marque outside.
google avatar

Stephanie S.

Yelp
I love that the Hollywood routinely shows popular features along with classic movies, independents, and cult faves. The workers aren't terrifically enthusiastic or engaging but that's fine as long as they are knowledgable about the films & concessions (and we've always found them to be so). Some seats are in need of extra TLC and they could use more stanchions & signage for lining up properly for ticketing, ordering foods, and getting in to the different theaters. As a member I appreciate the special events & screenings plus a few perks like discounted tickets, free popcorn, and guest passes. I don't see a way to reserve space online with the guest passes but otherwise we're always satisfied with our experiences at the theater.

Yelp
The ornate facade on this gorgeous theatre has always captured my attention and imagination. This theatre itself holds a special place in my heart/movie going experience. (many actually) As a child , I saved up my money to see "Star Wars" as many times as I could, while it played here during its original run in 1977. I think the grand total was 13 times. I still remember the excitement of walking into the theater. Things that have changed since I was a child: They have a new 50-ft. screen with an upgraded digital sound system in the main auditorium and new seats! In 2015 they brought 70MM back to the theatre, with showings of films new & old in this format. The popcorn is VEGAN if you nix the butter. The beer (they serve beer!) selection is varied . They have Kombucha if you feel inclined to cleanse. They have a pizza window that's called the "Pie Hole" that you can order slices from. I wish they had a vegan selection. :( The beautiful new marquee designed after the original 1926 marquee was installed in August of 2013, replacing the one that was installed in the 70's. As Non-profit theatre, they educate the public with classes, talks, guest appearances from directors, writers, actors etc... The annual "Queer Documentary Film Festival" is being held here now. Hooray! I also viewed one of my all time favorite films, "Vertigo" with Todd Haynes (one of my favorite directors) presenting it. They used to have a (free) "Walking Dead" viewing party, which was super fun and always full, until TCM but the Kibosh on that party. They also have original series such as: Fashion in Film- "Desperately Seeking Susan" (80's fashion) was a recent entry. Costume contests and commentary follow. Hecklevision - You can text-to-screen as you watch hilarious films. "Showgirls" was a recent outing. Re-Run Theater - They take television shows originally intended for the small screen and make them BIGGER. "The Bionic Woman-Fembots in Las Vegas", (complete with retro commercials) was a recent entry that we throughly enjoyed. This Is Your Theatre- Every month, followers are invited to vote for the film they want to see on the big screen. Once a winner is crowned, 100 tickets must be sold for the screening to take place. Queer Commons - Is a new, monthly film series created with the goal of bringing a little more queer content to the big screen. I haven't been yet, but look forward to this series! Yelp
Fun place to go to!! We went because this was the only theater in Portland showing the movie I wanted to see, and of course that means I have to go to strange locations. This one was a wonderful surprise. The ambiance is totally adorable, with incredible kettle popcorn smelling deliciously as you enter. We had to wait in line but that did not matter. Just taking in the fantasmagorical decor -- ornate to the point of feeling like you should dress up for it -- I love going out when the place screams 'Enjoy Me I Am Special' and you see how much effort other people have put into what they are wearing. Yay! That makes it extra-special. The parking was doable; we found some a few blocks away for free. A wonderful memory was added to our family history.

Yelp
This is by far my favorite theater in Portland, and one of my favorite establishments in the entire city. It is a non-profit run theater that works on restoring the actual theater itself, along with providing entertainment and screenings of classic 35mm and 70mm films. As a film buff, this is a dream come true, and I am fortunate enough to live in a city that appreciates classic theatres and maintains film projection equipment. I also appreciate their beer, snack and popcorn selection; there's a window to get slices from Sizzle Pie if you want something more substantial. The theatre itself consists of a main auditorium for their special screenings (35mm and 70mm, or events with cast members and celebrities) and two smaller screens upstairs for more mainstream fare. There are two places to get drinks and snacks, one upstairs and one down. They tend to start movies a bit late to compensate for concession stand lines, at least for more popular films when there is a long line. I've visited the Hollywood Theatre around fifty times in my lifetime and the experience never gets old, from the buttery fresh popcorn to the hoppiness of my beer and the film grain of the grindhouse movie I'm about to watch (that's never been released on home video.) Man, I love this place so much.

Yelp
The Hollywood Theatre is my favorite theater in Portland! Why? Well, first of all it's historical, and it shows -- in the best possible of ways! From the decor to the marquee, it's all so cool. You have to see a movie upstairs, or, should I say, up ramp? (It's a few stairs followed by a winding ramp that I always fantasize about riding rollerskates or a skateboard down!) Many of the seats have tables in front of them. And yeah, they may not be the fancy recliner-types you'll get at a newer theater, but it's part of the history and fun. Plus there are some pretty cool thing up there you have to check out. Downstairs on the main stage, they sometimes have super fun shows in addition to the movies they show. Like Queer Horror (I hope that comes back!) Plus they have pizza, beer, wine, and even Salt and Straw ice cream (in addition to the regular popcorn and candy selections). How awesome is that?! I also love that they support local artists, you can see new and historic films, as well as documentaries you won't see anywhere else in Portland. Basically, you just have to go and watch a movie there, and I'm guessing you'll fall in love with it, too.

Yelp
How do you review one of the most iconic movie theaters in the entire country? Not just based on my Yelp review. Not based on anyone's particular opinion in Portland of that venue. How about, on the opinion of many reputable actors, directors, producers, and writers in film to date? "The popcorn is fresh", and "supports the local economy!" are both true and great remarks concerning the Hollywood Theater, but such remarks as "they host an old school Kung Fu movie night on Tuesdays" and "they showed the original Nightmare on Elm Street in 35mm" are more appropriate. Hollywood caters to the film geeks, and to the preservation of classic cinema in many formats. Did you know they offer a membership to the theater, where you can vote on a monthly member movie that includes nominees from the 70's-90's? What a treat, to watch a movie that was released before you were born, on the big screen in original format. I can't say enough about this place, except that it's a lifestyle. When you find out about this place, you want to involve yourself in all of the events. Because it lets you stand for a fucking amazing cultural preservation cause, and because it sometimes lets you watch "Drop Dead Gorgeous" or "Death Becomes Her" in the name of an aptly themed Queer Horror Film night.

Yelp
My favorite theater of all time. And I'm a movie buff. And I'm lucky enough for it to be in my neighborhood!

Yelp
This is theatre gem in Portland. It was restored really well and is run as a non-profit. They bring in lots of great movies events during the week. They also get their hands on recent films. I have enjoyed several film events here and you have access to alcohol and some food. We always have a great time watching movies in this nostalgic theatre and I am sure you would also. Prices are super reasonable and it is for a great cause.
