Holy Cow BBQ Review - Culver City - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"Anytime you hear Culver City and BBQ in the same sentence, your mind probably goes to Maple Block. For good reason: it’s great. But there’s another player just down the road that’s still solid and offers something Maple Block doesn’t: delivery. Go all in on some brisket and mac and cheese." - Brant Cox

Holy Cow is a BBQ restaurant, but the French fries and cornbread muffin were the best highlight. Understandably, I am biased on BBQ. I've lived in TX, Memphis, and just south of Kansas City. This was not an equal comparison. We ordered the two meat platter with two sides. Which was a bit pricey for BBQ. The brisket, although seasoned well, was dry. Our baby back ribs were luke warm. The pulled pork tasted better covered with sauce. Cheese for the macaroni was only melted on top and not mixed throughout. The staff are helpful and friendly. We regularly had someone asking if we needed anything. Be aware that the restaurant is located in a busy plaza.

I was in the neighbor and decided to try Holy Cow. The counter service was good. The brisket had a good favor. The tri-tip was too dry and looked not appealing. The corn bread was good. They are on the expensive side. I will try other BBQ places and won’t come back.

$40 of Mediocrity. Small sauce selection. Cold meet. Bland macaroni. Tobacco hot sauce for greens. Oh yeah small sauce selection. The meat was totally dry and cold!

Came here on a date night. Amazing food and service. A bit pricy but it’s a niche restaurant so I get it. My wife and I are from Texas and the staff made sure it was up to par with our Texas standards. We all had a great laugh and enjoyed the experience. We got the sample platter with ribs, brisket, chicken, and sausage with coleslaw and beans. The meats were all great but I cannot emphasize how amazing the sides were. Best beans I’ve had on this side of the coast. My wife hates coleslaw but she and I devoured that so quick. The cornbread was on the house from the staff and BOY my wife and I fought over the last crumb and lick of the honey butter that came with it. You must get this cornbread! Wish everything was a few bucks cheaper but overall great experience and we’ll be going back!

The vibe of this restaurant was really neat and a great place for getting a bite. There are drinks and plenty of menu options. I don’t think the food is worth the value and I would not recommend if looking for a good barbecue spot. I ordered a half rack of baby back ribs, street corn, half dozen rolls, and two sids of mashed potatoes and mac and cheese. The ribs were not very tender and were alright. The rolls didn’t have that buttery, tasty flavor that many rolls do and were pretty dry. The street corn was delicious and my favorite part of the meal. The mashed potatoes and mac and cheese were both okay. Overall food rating is a 6/10 and the restaurant seemed cool so probably a 7/10.

I just have to commend their customer service first before anything else because it was great! Really welcoming, friendly and patient servers when they were recommending what to order! Place was clean and the atmosphere was cozy! Bathroom was also well maintained! As for the food: - Baby Backs (10/10): They tasted great, excellent BBQ sauce! Seasoning was not too salty, so I didn't feel the need to keep drinking water, which is a plus! 😋 The meat texture was mildly chewy and juicy as well! - Beef Ribs (8.5/10): Great flavor but meat was served cold, so it was harder to chew. However, I did enjoy them nonetheless. - Cornbread (10/10): Who would have thought cornbread in a BBQ restaurant tastes fantastic, I enjoyed them very much! TIPS: Anyways, if your food comes cold, don't just accept it. Tell the servers the food is cold (don't repeat the same mistake I made) because they were actually very willing to make it up to us. We enjoyed the cornbread very much, so we asked for more. 😁 Overall, if you love BBQ ribs, then you would love this place! They aren't the cheapest but the pricing is backed by the quality of their food, so fair play to them! 👍

I was expecting a hole in the wall and instead the family and I walked into a very clean and fun environment. Not only does it look nice the food is AWESOME! I had the fried chicken sando with buffalo sauce and it was delicious, tangy, and had medium spice. My daughter had mac n cheese and finished the whole thing. My wife had the house brisket sando and she raced about it. The service was spot on, cheerful, and helpful. After yelling at the table "how did everyone like their food?" all I got were thumbs up as the other hand was scraping the bottom of their plates for any crumbs. Awesome place! PS make these Holy Cow cups available for purchase and I would buy one in a heartbeat

This is our favorite Holy Cow, there are a few. It is also one of our favorite BBQ places. It is just the best. We are always happy. The service is so kind and fast. They never get the order wrong and it is always so great. I always order mac and cheese and corn bread, I just have to have it. It is always so good. They got not over cooking the corn bread down and that is a huge deal to me. We tried the kids brisket slider with fries. The slider was great, but call it a slider, not sliders as it comes as one. The brisket was so tender and the bun was fantastic. The fries need just a bit of work, they need more crisp to them. We also had a rack of pork ribs and a salad and as always it was so so good. You will just love this place. It is always spotless and again, the service is so good. You won't be waiting forever. You can dine there, have delivery, or pick up. Pick up is so easy, you call and tell them when you will be there and your food is ready. If you like BBQ and also like being able between burn my mouth hot and mild, this is the place for you. Their burgers are also wonderful. Have the best time.

Yelp
Holy Cow BBQ - A Must-Try! I recently had an amazing experience at Holy Cow BBQ! From the moment I walked in, their team was incredibly helpful, especially when it came to explaining the menu and giving great recommendations. They know how to help you get the most out of their delicious offerings. The service was prompt, and the food was fantastic - I especially love their greens. Plus, the convenient parking made the visit even more stress-free. All in all, I would definitely return. Holy Cow BBQ is a solid 10 out of 10!

Yelp
Reluctant 3 stars. As far as BBQ goes this place is just average. We tried the brisket, tri-tip, and chicken and they were all dry and tasted pretty much the same. The mac 'n cheese was awful and is to be avoided at all costs. It really says something when the best part of your meal is the mashed potatoes... Totally underwhelming food. The room has a nice quiet vibe, there's a full bar, and the service is friendly and attentive but you're not really missing anything if you don't come here.

Yelp
We have been wanting to give Holy Cow a try for a while, but was hesitant because not everyone can do BBQ. It's just one of those foods you take a gamble on. We walked in, and the place was bright, cheery, with today's Country music playing. We stood at the front for a bit before we were greeted although there were about 3 staff standing behind the bar. We were finally greeted by an employee who was very helpful in taking our order. We both ordered the 3 meat combo with a side of Greens and a side of BBQ Baked Beans. We ordered the Fried pickles as an appetizer. The fried pickles came out in a nice "Holy Cow mug, which added to the presentation of the delicious, tangy, almost salty bites. Not bad. Once our entrées came out, the portions did not look plentiful but let me tell YOU! We were pleasantly satisfied and had plenty to take home to enjoy tomorrow. The brisket was delicious. Very tender, as well as the Tri-Tip, Baby Back Ribs, and pulled pork. The Hot link was also delightful with a delicious mustard sauce for dipping. The sides were "alright". If you like your Collard Greens on the SWEET side, you will love them as they are very tender. I did like them once I got past the sweetness. The beans were mediocre. Similar taste of a good ol can of Van Camp's pork and beans. Simple, but complimented the overall meal well. I give the food here a solid 8/10. What WAS lacking here in my opinion was CUSTOMER SERVICE or lack thereof. I'm a bit confused because when you pay before seating yourself, you are asked to include your tip. No problem. We don't ever have a problem tipping for even mediocre service. But here I don't believe a waiter or waitress came to our table other than to drop our food off, and go back into the kitchen area. Whenever we needed anything, we had to get up and approach the gentleman behind the bar. For refills, and even for our to go containers. We weren't provided a bag until later as we were leaving and a young man who works here offered us a bag. Holy Cow!!!! What did you suggest we tip you for Holy Cow? We did and up leaving a tip in the jar but it was mainly for the gentleman who topped our drinks off...... after going up to the bar with our cups. Service 2/10. This says a lot! Would we come back? Absolutely! But definitely for an order to go!

Yelp
Ambiance: it's one of the best bbq places in the area, spacious dining hall inside, full bar service Service: you order through the counter and grab a number tag, then they will bring food to your table, servers were very friendly and refilled water adequately Food & Drink: variety choices of bbq meat, combo, burgers, sandos, and salad Santa Maria Tri-Tip - **** tender texture with smoky flavors, recommend Baby Backs - *** a bit dry Beef Ribs - **** only available over weekend while supplies last, chewy and flavorful, recommend Garlic Roll - **** tasty, recommend Mac & Cheese - **** creamy, recommend Lemonade - *** light taste Price: moderate portions and reasonable prices, about $25 per person

Yelp
First time trying holy cow bbq. I walked in very excited since I really love bbq. They have the menu displayed up on tvs which is really cool and a great variety of choices. On this day I decided to get a brisket sando which I was told by the lady at the register that it is one of her favorites so that only made me more eager to try it. I'm a big fan of brisket and I was planning on ordering just brisket but that sandwich called my attention which I also got with a cornbread. The food: the sandwich was very nicely built and had a lot of meat on it so much flavor on the meat and the slaw added a great crunch unfortunately the meat was very tough for me it wasn't like I expected. The cornbread was amazing and it was even better with the butter I added to it! Will definitely be trying more of the menu.

Yelp
Ordered picked up and it's an easy location to get to and has some other shops around it as well. Got plate one with brisket, Mac and cheese and subbed for the cornbread. Brisket 5/5 super tasty only thing I wish is they gave more sauce. Mac and cheese 2/5 as a Mac and cheese lover and maker I didn't love this. I felt the flavor was lacking and perhaps the noodles were cooked enough in the batch I got. Cornbread and sweet butter 2.5/5 the cornbread was good but the honey butter could've been sweeter. Would go back but wouldn't rush back.

Yelp
From the moment we entered, we felt pretty at home. Staff was amazing, gave us some good direction on what to choose. The brisket was very tender, had a hard time with the fork because it just fell apart. Good flavor not dry at all. The tri-tip was really good as well. Was expecting it to be a little tough, but it was not nice.Tender worked really well with the garlic rolls as a small sandwich. At first, I really thought there would be a need of some type of gravy to go with the mashed potatoes, but they were really tasty. Full of flavor could have eaten just that and been happy. Cornbread was really good with the added butter couldn't have asked her anything more on that one. The ambiance of the place was really nice. Very well, designed. Nice place to come in and have a beer and brisket and watch the game. There were some large TVS cool little place.

Yelp
So disappointing. Spent a bunch of money and it was barely any food. Best part was the bread. Can't believe they call it mac and cheese. Awful. Meat was average. They need to redo their menu.

Yelp
Holy Cow is one of our favorite go to spots! The portions are great! We got the Big BBQ Sampler to try everything and we were thoroughly impressed to find great bbq on the westside! Meat was tender, scratch sides were great (not too heavy), and the garlic rolls are definitely a must! Love the sauces that come with the respective protein and the sauce that's available at every table. Holy Cow is truly a pleasant surprise. Plenty of seating and inside a pretty good parking lot. The staff is always happy to help, and really seem like they care for their customers. Always super excited to show this place to visitors!

Yelp
I love this BAR-B-QUE spot! I have been here several times, and the food is consistently good. Period. Let's jump right into this review. What I've had: Sides Greens, yummy to my tummy. Absolutely delicious. Juicy and tender. Full of flavor. Baked sweet potatoe, bless the hands who bakes the sweet potatoes. They are tender, moist, fluffy like a cloud, and that maple butter melts in your mouth. Coleslaw, not bad. It's not my favorite. It's missing something for me but I can't say what exactly. Mac N' Cheese, I like it but don't love it. Mac N' Cheese is like potatoe salad, it's a preference and taste (50/50) thing, in my opinion. My most recent visit, I had the "Big Dog" and collard greens. The "Big Dog" consists of a hotlink, slaw, crispy pickles, & pickled red onions. See pictures. #tasty Pros 1. Friendly staff always. Haven't had a run-in with an employee who wasn't nice. I have dined in and taken out. 2. Food is consistently good. That's a plus. Several visits later, Holy Cow continues to serve quality, great tasting food. 3. Portion size is generous. 4. Seating inside and out. Bathrooms are available, but I have not used them to speak to the decor or cleanliness of the bathrooms. Cons 1. Small parking lot, but I haven't run into a parking problem. Street parking is available as well. I won't say the prices are unreasonable (not for me), that will depend on you as an individual, for the quality and area, the prices are fair. Holy Cow is a great addition to Culver City. I'm always full of smiles after a Holy Cow meal. It's one of my "frequent favs" and recommendations to try.

Yelp
Hands down my go to bbq joint in the area. Not quite as good as Maple block, but its almost half the price. The mash, ribs and brisket are amazing. Bread rolls are good also.

Yelp
The BBQ and the service gets it right. The BBQ beef sandwich tops all of LA in taste, flavor, and messy juices. Love their coleslaw and beans.

Yelp
Loved it! Got the 2 meat combo ( brisket and ribs ) with potato salad! My son got chicken wings and a Shirley Temple . We both loved our meals. And the little garlic butter biscuit bread things ARE FRIGGEN FANTASTIC. I RARELY EAT BREAD but these were to yummy not to eat. The staff were super kind and attentive as well. We very much enjoyed our lunch!

Yelp
You can never go wrong with Holy Cow! I always get pulled pork or the pulled chicken and I'm always satisfied! Sofia was also great! So informative about the food and drinks!

Yelp
Downgrading my review because the portions are too small for what you pay. I really wish I had taken pics of the food before we ate to show the portion size but I didn't realize they were giving less food than last time. I got a 2 meat combo ($23.99) which comes with 2 choices of meat and a side. I got Tri-tip & Texas brisket and I feel like there should have been significantly more meat for $24. For my side I got collard greens and the portion was also smaller. The taste of everything was good, just not enough food for the price. My girlfriend got a one meat combo ($16.99) which came with a side and the pulled pork is still dry and the portion size has decreased. She also got collard greens and liked the taste but there should have been more. For dessert we got peach cobbler ($5.99) and it was pretty good but only a few bites and was more of a taste than an actual dessert. Not really worth the price. Also to note - their sandwiches range from $12.99 to $15.99 and DO NOT come with a side like the used to. You can add one for $4.99 which is basically a dollar less than if you got one a-la-carte. I don't mind paying prices like these for good food but if you charge prices like this, your food had better be great and I expect the portions to be enough where I leave full and feeling like I got my moneys worth. I can't say I feel like I got my moneys worth tonight

Yelp
Servers are nice the food is very inconsistent especially for the price and the owner is very unpleasant.

Yelp
I was excited to try Holy Cow bbq but was incredibly dissapointed. Finding parking was easy and the inside of the restaurant was very clean. I chose the sampler bbq which is 1 pound of meat, 2 sides and 4 rolls ($53). I chose 1/2 brisket and 1/2 Tri tip, mashed taters and beans. I liked the beans and the potato was delicious. I am giving this place a low score because the meats came out cold, chewy and didn't have much flavor. Luckily service was great and they took it back and grilled it.
google avatar

Annabella G.

Yelp
Everything we ordered was delicious. The barbecue chicken and the Tri-Tip was delicious. The corn bread was amazingly good. My Son had a burger, and it was outstanding! Excellent place to hang out Service was great.

Yelp
Was craving BBQ and happened to be in the area so found this spot on Yelp with good reviews. Parking was convenient for the area since they have their own lot and wasn't too busy when we got there around 2pm. So you order up front to get a number and they bring your orders to the table. The cashier was friendly and very nice and clean inside. My bf and I both got the 2 meat combo plate so I picked brisket and tri tip with collard greens for my side and he got a hot link and brisket with mashed potatoes. The brisket was very tender and flavorful and so was the tri tip. Their bbq sauce was also very good. The collard greens were cooked well but hot link was not spicy at all which was a little disappointing although it was still juicy and flavorful. Mashed potatoes were nice and creamy. The roll was delicious tho, it came out hot and fresh and super soft with good garlic flavor. Our only main complaint was that it seemed like the portion was a bit small for what you pay for ($24 before tax + tip) and again hot link should've been spicier. I also wish there was an option for fattier or lean cuts for the brisket as I prefer leaner or maybe they do but I didn't think to ask. Overall very good quality food and would come back if I find myself in the area again.

Yelp
As a Texan living in LA, I'm always surprised to find decent BBQ, this place has a nice variety of eats and I enjoyed everything we tried. I definitely plan to come here again. Weird compliment, but try their buffalo sauce - it's unique. Good portions and easy parking. I have to come back and try a few other things but everything we tried was delicious. They also have a Pie vendor they partner with, I highly recommend the pies. They service was great and interior was great and comfortable for our party of four. You could do a large-ish group here and there is outdoor seating.

Yelp
Everything was delicious! The staff was very friendly and helpful when ordering. Prices were reasonable and the portions were plentiful.

Yelp
Service is great. Food is mediocre. Minimal smoke on the meats, also a bit tough. The price is alright for what you get, if you're eating keto/paleo.

Yelp
Food: craving some bbq after returning from KY, and although this didn't quite live up to Southern bbq, it was pretty darn good. Tried the sampler since this was our first time here. Smaller than we expected, but ended up filling 2 adults with average appetites well. They had run out of beef ribs, so we tried: pulled chicken (delish flavor except for a few parts where the chicken was a bit chewy/dry); brisket (tender and juicy); pulled pork (also tender and flavorful) and mesquite chicken (decent but forgettable). Cornbread was to die for with the cream spread. At $6 a pop, they weren't cheap but so worth it. Kids meals were a decent size for their pricing. Drinks were a bit pricey. Avg adult meal $25 without alcohol. Does the job when you crave bbq. Just don't expect a ton of food considering the cost. Service: pleasant and friendly. You order at counter and they bring the food to you. They did periodically check in to see if you needed anything including carry out boxes. Ambiance: clean and welcoming. Casual spot with a couple big screens to watch sports. Small patio area that wasn't being used. Easy free parking.

Amie L.

Yelp
Love this place- great food super easy. The pulled pork sandwich is great and my whole family loves the mini pies!

Yelp
outstanding food, highly recommended. The ribs were great this was a door dash delivery and every thing was hot and portions were perfect.
google avatar

Gene D.

Yelp
Hmm, what words would I use to describe their Q? Delicious, tasty, authentic, on point, etc. I enjoyed both the brisket and ribs without any sauce. You don't need it. Let the meats speak for themselves. And the roll that accompanied my meal was delicious, too! Only issues: a bit pricey for what you get and the collard greens was a bit off tasting/putting.

Yelp
I was feeling homesick today & being from Texas, there's no BBQ like home. But this place came as close as it can get!! I was stunned because I've been to numerous other BBQ spots where the food was good but the place looked a mess, or the place was 5 star fancy but the food bland. HOLY COW has a great clean ambiance, AMAZING SERVICE, and spectacular food with a whole lot of flavor!! Even down to the warm soft garlic bread. My heart is filled and I'm so content It would be a disservice to my community if I did not SHARE this amazing place. 10/10 recommend & will bring my family here to confirm. Can't wait to come back to try the whole menu!! I regret sharing the #2 combo with my husband because I could've easily eaten the whole thing.
google avatar

Niona W.

Yelp
It's fine. The brisket and pulled pork are the way to go. I also had the friend chicken and that was a mistake. It was more like shake and bake chicken. Their beans and greens were better than expected. Mac and cheese needs cheese.
google avatar

Jerry T.

Yelp
I have been there a few times and Paul and his crew are great. Friendly and knowledgeable and great tasting food. I will be going back soon UP DATE I JUST LOOKED AT MY RECEIPT AND FOUND OUT THAT HOLY COW CHARGED ME 15% TIP FOR MY GO ORDER. As I receive my order I gave Itzel a$5 cash tip. I sure don't like that they charge a tip for go orders. And don't say anything after I give them $5 cash. And I changed my 5 star to 3

Yelp
This is a really cool restaurant! It is always pretty quiet in there and there is a lot of seating for family and friends. This was my second time visiting and the staff was so incredibly kind and excited to recommend things off their menu. I'm vegetarian, so I got the ranch salad and the side of mac n cheese. Both were delicious! You also get a garlic bun with your salad, which is melt in the mouth tasty!

Yelp
Just spent several weeks traveling through the south eating barbecue and holy cow is some of the best I've ever had. Incredible service and food. Some of the best pork shoulder I've ever had. Great atmosphere and extremely friendly staff. Can't wait to come back.

Yelp
Ordered take out on a rainy day.. partner got the hog sandwich, chilli fries, and I got brisket with sides. The good: hog sammie, brisket, cornbread. The mid: chilli fries. The not great: mac n' cheese Service was good - but can't speak on it much since we solely picked up our order. Ambiance inside seems fun .. lots of different beers on tap and booth style seating available. Parking is available for free inside a plaza that has multiple levels to park.

Yelp
Oh wow....we just moved to the neighborhood and they had such amazing bbq. Drinks were great! When we mentioned we were new to the area, they brought complimentary cornbread. Service was excellent and you could tell they take pride in their food!

Yelp
In my experience, Holy Cow has always served up worship-worthy BBQ! I've never had a bad experience there. Servers are courteous and the food is delicious. I'll definitely be back!

Yelp
The menu is a bait and switch, so beware , the only meats that are the menu price is the chicken and the pork. The ribs and brisket are a dollar more. They hide that fact by it saying from....they do not notify you of the additional cost they just add it and charge you .

Yelp
Food was ordered and delivered via Grubhub. The brisket order was supposed to be a double order yet seemed to be lacking. Small portion size considering the cost. The collard greens were good, but on the verge of being too salty. Overall it was okay.

Yelp
Amazing place that I have been to several times now. Each time a pleasant surprise in both quality and service. The last time I met the owner. He took time out to say hi to me and my husband outside while we were eating the best hot links in Los Angeles. The entire staff emulates this warm appreciation for their customers and it doesn't go unnoticed. Let's get to the food part. Bar none, the best damn bbq in the city. The first time I ate there I had the brisket sandwich with greens as a side. It was very obvious that they wanted my return business. Such care in the taste and texture of the smoked meat. I couldn't believe it. The second time, a small mishap occurred but it was quickly addressed and made right by the staff. And that was on Christmas Eve! Again, I was blown away by easy they made everything for me. I'm not sure where you're getting your bbq, but if it's not here, you're missing out. Every single time is such a wonderful experience. I'm not used to casual dining being so delicious and also such friendly customer service. Well done Holy Cow!

Yelp
Not happy with the owner's attitude toward clients nor the BBQ itself. Not dog friendly not human centered. Will not be back.

Yelp
We've been coming here for years, but clearly something has changed with management or ownership, the food is horrible, and barely cooked. To be clear we came here a few months ago and it tasted nothing like this. It's bland and poorly portioned. Very disappointing, we won't be coming back.

Yelp
The food here is so tasty I usually get the ol Smokey burger my wife ordered the tri tip salad which she loved with the cilantro dressing mmmm it was so very good ,the service was beyond good our server was amazing .she was friendly courteous and always stopped to ask if we needed anything including topping off our tea ,the entire staff were all great. If I had one complaint it would be just around sundown the sun was blinding , my wife and I couldn't find a seat where the sun wasn't directly in our eyes ,A nice shade would made our dining experience even more enjoyable. I would highly recommend Holy Cow the food and service is absolutely heavenly !

Yelp
as a return customer. $100 for two people. What the hell was that? Crappy food that's what. My pork ribs were all fat barely any meat on it. Terrible. My mesquite barbecue chicken was so dry. The rolls were crappy. Very very disappointed. Almost called but think I'd be to mean. Thanks for the memories I don't think we're coming back
