The Ride-Along Report: First Takes From Last Night’s Dinner

"What It Is: A steakhouse in Tribeca that focuses on smoked meats Perfect For: Birthdays We enjoy steakhouses that feel like places where Dean Martin would’ve smoked cigars in corner booths, and we also enjoy really good slow-cooked smoked meats. Holy Ground is a new spot in Tribeca where we recently experienced both. It’s behind an unmarked door on Reade Street, and the basement space has red leather booths, low ceilings, and walls covered in paintings that look very old. We liked everything we ordered, especially the full rack of spare ribs which were sliced by a server tableside and fell off the bone when we picked them up. There’s a deep smokiness to all the meats here, which is especially appreciated because they don’t let you smoke cigars in corner booths. The Verdict: Come here if you like to drink martinis and eat really good meat. We’ve added it to our Hit List." - hannah albertine, bryan kim, katherine lewin, hillary reinsberg, chris stang, matt tervooren

Awesome little coffee shop under St. Paul Church. It's a different but very amazing place. Coffee here is delicious, and their lattes, ice coffee, and tea's are all very good. They have a chapel next door with all the stain glass. Will be coming back again soon.

I saw a reel online about this place and got really interested on visiting it; the church and the way the video was filmed made the cafe looked more attractive than it really is. Service was less than poor. The young kid barely asked me what I wanted, unable to pronounce a simple 'hi' or 'hello' don't even think about a more difficult 'welcome.' The coffee was ok, not bad but neither was amazing. Will I come back? I doubt it. On the other hand the church is absolutely beautiful. It was closed but the exterior was totally worth it to visit this area. The little chapel connected to the coffee shop has beautiful stained glasses. Will I come back? Have no doubt about it. I think if the church is so pretty on the outside the interior must be amazing.

I heard that this was a unique spot for coffee so I had to check it out! There is parking but a notice that your car will be blocked if you are parked during service. The stairs lead down to the coffee shop entrance into a tiny room in the church basement. It’s a cute setup and they have a nice offering of coffee and a few juices/teas. You can walk into the small service room on the side but you have to go upstairs and ask nicely to see the rest of the church on a Monday afternoon! Beautiful church with stained glass!

I saw this place on Instagram and had to check it out. The cafe itself was nothing special, the kid working was very nice and polite, the latte was amazingly good, it was a much bigger size than most coffee shops. The chapel connected was beautiful, the only thing they ask is you don’t bring your drink in with you. I will make sure I walk around the church’s exterior the next time.

Went for the first time today, and it was so cute. Coffee was great (with a cookie!), barista was sweet & the chapel was warming.

Google
Cute little shop. Was disappointed that they didn't have pastries or bagels, but the service made up for it. Great suggestions. My partner and I were very happy with the strawberry matcha and latte.

Google
I ordered the iced Americano but it seemed like more of a cold brew? Wasn’t exactly sure. The cafe is a cool concept, kind of like a hidden gem connected to a chapel/church. The seating area was a bit smaller and the outlets were not functional? But it seemed like they were working on fixing that.

Tried their valentines menu and loved the Berries n’ Cream! Highly recommend if you like sweet drinks. Also entrance is near parking lot.

Yelp
Wonderful coffee shop located along the side of St Paul's Catholic Church. Community vibes with great service. Small menu hitting all the highlights at this local spot Pro Tip: entrance located along side of the building. If you didn't know you could walk right by!!

Yelp
The workers could work on their welcoming skills. It's not a big coffee shop and it gets a little busy but there's 3 people in the front working. Nitzi, I think that was her name - took my order and I think she was taken aback when I asked her for her name. I always like to know so I can say thank you afterwards with their name. I ordered and iced coffee with a little coconut syrup but they added coconut milk instead which is fine - It's a very good coffee and I'll be back. Hopefully they have improved on their welcoming skills. Btw- the coffee shop has a beautiful chapel connected to it. Go visit it and give thanks!

Yelp
Breve Vanilla Latte : 3 of 5 Coffee was rather weak tasting for my liking. Service was fast and the ambiance is probably the most unique out of a coffee shop. I think this is mainly because it's located/connected to a Catholic church. Very rustic and peaceful vibes. The people here are the best part. Very nice and talkative. I even got to help fix the lights Give this place a shot for sure though.

Yelp
Stopped by Holy Grounds in Pilsen this morning and grabbed a Maple Pancake Latte and an Iced Polar Bear Latte--total came to about $8. The Maple Pancake Latte was like a hug in a cup: sweet maple syrup, cozy cinnamon, and a buttery finish that made me feel like I was enjoying breakfast in a log cabin. The Iced Polar Bear Latte was a cool, creamy treat with a nice vanilla kick--perfect for sipping while I people-watched on their outdoor patio. The staff was friendly and welcoming, and the vibe inside was warm and inviting. Already planning my next visit to try their other seasonal drinks.

Yelp
Most easily Missed Coffee spot in the city , but you can't beat the location, inside a Church dating back to 1876, if you wander around and go through one of the doors inside the cafe, you'll see a beautiful area with amazing stain glass , The staff is so friendly and quick to strike up conversation, and their signature drinks are extremely creative ,They also boast some serious tea creations , A must stop for any coffee house enthusiast!

Yelp
After seeing this place in so many articles and videos, we had to stop by for ourselves. It's tucked away in the church basement, and such a cute spot to grab a coffee, other beverage, or sit and study or meet someone up in the neighborhood. It's very welcoming and I love that it's run by students. Such a creative way to use the space. The prices are super reasonable. To my understanding, there is only one size. The size was very filling and way cheaper than most other coffee shops. But even if it was pricier, I wouldn't mind paying more for this place. The coffees we tried were great, they also have seasonal specials. Overall, it's a great atmosphere to come enjoy in the heart of Pilsen. I hope to see it continue to thrive!

Yelp
Service was nice and friendly! My friend and I decided to check this place out after work and tried their Valentines menu. We got Red Velvet and Berries N' Cream. I recommend getting the Berries N' Cream it tastes like a pink starburst and we enjoyed the little cookie on top. Also this is located in the basement of the church. Entrance is by the parking lot.

Yelp
A fun find in the neighborhood. Solid coffee, friendly service, tables to study in the coffee shop and pews in the small chapel next door.

Yelp
Holy mackerel, this place is ADORABLE! This very quaint and unassuming coffee shop in the basement of the historic St. Paul's in Pilsen has such a cozy atmosphere. There's signs all around with community events that just warmed my heart. Service was very good, and you definitely get a good bang for your buck here. I'll be back!

Yelp
My daughter states this is the best coffee in Chicago. She had the Horchata Iced Coffee and my other daughter had the Iced Pilar. Both were excellent. I had the Fire Chai Latte which was nice with a little spice and my wife had the Vanilla Chai Latte which was a bit sweeter. The place is cozy with a little bit of seating. The staff were pleasant.

Yelp
Located in the basement of the rectory building. Lots of parking & seating are available on days that are not Sunday. Has a great selection of drinks for coffee & non-coffee drinkers. The horchata latte was not as sweet as I hoped it would be. Would go back to try other items on their menu. The service was great and very friendly.

Yelp
I went here today around 11 and there was little to no traffic in the store. Ordered a Dulce de leche latte and the barista made it right away. The perfect coffee shop in the church that's quiet and has good coffee. Would definitely go back.

Yelp
Such a cute little shop in the basement of St Paul's. Everyone is so nice and you feel like you're part of the community. My horchata iced coffee was delicious and I appreciate that such a small shop still had plenty of non-dairy milk options.

Yelp
In case you're a dumbass like me, here are the direction on how to get inside. Drive into the parking lot and there's a little staircase going down right next to the parking lot! There's a sign, don't be shy go inside! Coffee was good, thanks for taking our picture I liked the vibes, I will definitely be back! Service was amazing!

Yelp
Came across this cute coffee shop within St. Pauls Catholic Church and stopped by to check out their spring specials! Pictured is the Chocolate Covered Strawberry Iced Coffee. The entire drink was amazing, but the strawberry cold foam on top was the best part! Its a small cafe, but super cute inside, and the lady making our drinks was incredibly nice. Ill definitely be back to try some of their other drinks. Theres a parking lot, so parking is easy, but just note they dont offer much food if you're hoping for that with your latte.

Yelp
Coffee is amazing! So friendly and cute! The best part it was our first time there and we ran into the most gracious friendly person that invited us and gave us a tour of the beautiful church grounds. Thank you!!!

Yelp
Visited this adorable coffee shop this morning and purchased the horchata iced coffee & polar iced coffee. Coffee was amazing. Service was even better. I absolutely loved the atmosphere here, they've definitely gained a lifetime customer!

Yelp
I almost finished my drink without taking a picture of its beauty hahaha So I was craving some real good coffee but I was tired of the same old Starbies and DD. Turned to Yelp and typed in "coffee" and got shown this little spot in Pilsen. What a treat! I ordered a Dulce de Leche Iced Latte and it was exactly what I was looking for. The staff seems really lovely and make their drinks amazing adding the perfect amount of everything Definitely going to start coming here more. And you should too! **UPDATE** Went again today and I'm pleased to say. It was a hit! Put someone else on to my drink as well. Def made with love. Thank you Holy Grounds
