Holy Paleta Landing in Little Italy - Eater San Diego

"Dessert choices in Little Italy are about to get a lot more colorful with the arrival of Holy Paleta, a shop focused on hand-crafted frozen popsicles modeled after the classic paletas found in the Michoacan and Jalisco states of Mexico. Holy Paleta puts its own twist on the frozen treats by offering optional drizzles of chocolate and other sweet toppings. This paleteria will be the Bonita-based company’s second storefront and will feature more guest seating than its first location. The menu will offer the same range of popsicles as its parent store, from vegan-friendly, fruit-based pops such as chamango on a stick, tamarind, and strawberry mojito to dairy-based flavors including chocolate milkshake, strawberry cheesecake, and creamy avocado; there are even pops filled with Nutella or condensed milk. Other options will include a cold brew coffee and horchata paleta pairing for caffeine lovers and pupsicles for your four-legged companions. For the grand opening, slated for this August, head chef and owner Angelica Gonzales will be concocting several new flavors." - Mario A. Cortez

Google
Amazing ice cream pops at Holy Paleta! Such delicious and unique desserts crafted at Holy Paleta makes it one of my favorite desserts to get in San Diego. We ordered the cinnamon toast horchata pop and the smores pop and loved both. Nice shop with a good amount of seating and great vibes. Very friendly and quick service. Recommend!

Google
Stumbled upon this lovely little place while walking on Little Italy area. On stepping in you are greeted by the several paletas from fruit to milk based flavors on the counter. Place has a nice vibe and is spacious. They also have customizable topping options available for a surcharge. Coffee flavor was amazing and had a center of leche, which nicely balanced out the strong coffee flavor. Loved the pistachio paleta.. it wasn’t overpowered by sugar, had a nutty flavor that let pistachio shine! Highly recommend the place.

Google
EACH paleta is $10+ … do what you want with this information. Such a rip off - you’re better off getting Salt & Straw down the street or gelato, more ice cream for less money and better quality. The service here was bad - employee was in the back room and didn’t greet up, was annoyed that we were simply looking at what toppings they had and her attitude was all around bad

Google
We found this place randomly on a hot sunny day. A real surprise !! Not only a taste to enjoy but also a the presentation of the Paleta 🤗 Try it without hesitation 💪😍🤙

Google
The people there are nice but $6 and change without tip for a cucumber w/chili popsicle with nothing on it! It was good, but expensive to say the least.

Google
Nice experience with various pops and ice cream options and interesting topping options. I enjoyed trying the lemon pops with some chamoy and tajin sauce! And my friends enjoyed their other ice creams with sweet toppings. I think their price is relatively high! Could be $2 less and would be more busy probably! But still I recommend trying it out!

Google
3/16/2024 Definitely hands down one of the best ice cream 🍦 I have had in a long time . We got a few flavors and strawberries 🍓 and crème is sweet and amazingly flavorful ( get it with white chocolate drizzled) Omg 😳 fire 🔥 strawberry pica refreshing nicely goes with tajim! The banana Nutella was creamy and sweet dipped in chocolate 🍫♥️♥️ Cookies and crème was delicious 🤤 They had tables and chairs 🪑 inside Some chairs outside ♥️♥️♥️ It was a little expensive $35 for 4 😳😳😳 But I guess if you want to experience this ice cream you will have to pay the price lol Thank me later

Google
Very good! The selection is so amazing you can find all kind of pops here I went a little basic and got the fruit yogurt, no regrets it was very good! The service was great, they helped me with recommendation and were nice:)

Yelp
I have never had a paleta before, never mind a loaded paleta, but I am so glad we were able to try Holy Paleta today! They have a large variety of different paletas, including fruit bars, fruit bars with milk/creamy base, and more dessert-like bars with condensed milk or coconut milk. We decided to try 4 of their paletas: - mango dragonfruit ($6) - chamango ($9) - strawberry cheesecake ($6) -tres leches ($10) All of the paletas we tried were absolutely DELICIOUS & super refreshing ! They were all so good. They are a bit pricey but well worth the price. A regular, as-is paleta is $6, whereas a loaded paleta is about $10. This is the perfect dessert for after dinner or just to have on a nice summer day. Staff was also nice and helpful. I am so happy I discovered paletas & grateful to have had such a lovely experience. I look forward to trying more flavors!

Yelp
Happen to come across this spot cruising on yelp for deserts because you know.... Why not? Gave us a chance to travel down to little Italy for the first time. I think there's a couple spots that do similar things but this place was legit for these pop bars. They have a huge selection of flavors, flavor toppings to customize your pop, dry toppings, milk white chocolate sauces and the like. We each got a bar that was as it is no frills and 2 that had the works. I got the strawberry cheesecake and it was very clean not overly sweet with bits of cheesecake / graham bits flavoring. I also got the chamango bar, with chimoy and tajin and just yummy drizzle. The lady got tres leches and mango dragonfruits The dragon fruit bar was good not overly sweet and you could taste the dragonfruit. The tres leches has so much on top and it was in that pool of tres leches sauce. Enjoyable, good space and clean setting. The servers were great and had suggestions and made the experience good

Yelp
Such a cute place! You can customize your snacks, it's like a little bar for treats! Would come back!

Yelp
Loved my sweet treat from here! This was so delicious and refreshing on a hot day. I was able to customize mine and create the perfect paleta! They also offer a wide variety of premade paleta options or you can just get it plain! The ambiance is calm and clean, very cute for photos!

Yelp
I love this place! I haven't been here in a while and it made me remember just how much I love it. Their ice cream bars are creamy, delicious and refreshing. Their dips and toppings are always fresh. You can't tell from the photo because it's buried under a layer of Maria's cookie crumbs but my bar tonight had fresh strawberries and bananas on it and that's exactly what they were--super fresh- as in they went to the back to cut them fresh. And the fruit was perfectly ripe and sweet. It completely complemented the ice cream and was such a tasty treat. The most challenging part for me is deciding which flavor and toppings to get. Truly, you can't go wrong--they are all amazing. It's just a matter of "what do I feel like today?" The staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. And the ambiance was a bit Tokyo pop. Very cute and clean. Looking forward to coming back. And yes, parking stinks--it's Little Italy, what do you expect? But if you plan to walk a bit, you can potentially walk off some of the calories, and if you're into Pokemon, there's great catching on the way!

Yelp
A refreshing & not overly sweet dessert stop! You can chose an already customized paleta off their menu or create your own (choosing your paleta, adding dip & toppings optional). We chose Rainbow Crunch (raspberry lemonade pop + white chocolate + fruity pebbles), strawberry mango pop, and cookies n cream pop. They were all enjoyable but cookies n cream ended up being our fave! It came with a whole oreo embedded in the creaminess of the pop- just as irresistible & satisfying as dipping oreos in a cup of cold milk but in a popsicle form!

Yelp
Stumbled into this Holy Paleta place after walking around little Italy with a group of family and friends. They had so much paleta flavors and many toppings you can choose from. I ordered a strawberry paleta dipped in chocolate, covered with nuts, cinnamon toasted and topped with chocolate drizzle. So tasty! 10 out of 10! Ingredients are fresh. A bit pricey but it was so worth it! Staff were accommodating, helpful and friendly. The shop is super clean with modern beautiful decor. Plenty of tables and seats for you to enjoy your dessert.
google avatar

Kapo K.

Yelp
I thought it was quite overpriced, but the flavor is legit. I would assume the quality of the flavor wouldn't be as good unless they use the good ingredient and I assume that's where the money is going to. Cuz even just the regular mango tastes like real mango fruit and that doesn't always happen in most paleta places. So I will probably come back again cuz the money is worth it.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place! So many great options and very customizable. Cute aesthetics and places to site inside. A great place to go if you don't want the typical ice cream and want your own ice cream popsicle! There are dairy popsicle options as well as fruit versions as well. Love it here! Parking can be tricky during weekends so prepare for that.
google avatar

Justin S.

Yelp
Cute ice cream shop. Decided to stop here for a sweet treat with my cousins from out of town. The aesthetic is clean and tropical. They have variety of flavors and topping for ice bars!
google avatar

Nathalie H.

Yelp
Good mix of traditional Mexican paletas and fancy exotic ones. On top of that you can customize them with sweets or exotic favors. Good mix of everything from spicy chamoy and tajin to sweet toppings or sugary cereals. Nice dessert treat.
google avatar

Risto K.

Yelp
Interesting concept for frozen fruit juice, ice cream and toppings. I like the concept but location is not well managed and consequently I was disappointed being their customer. Menu offered is old and outdated. Tables are dirty and one of them is broken, and at $7.5 for basic guava pop sickle I feel their prices are pushing premium ice cream territory - which this is clearly not.
google avatar

Minda H.

Yelp
Unfortunately I was not impressed with this place. The menu's were not updated (from what the staff told us), one staff member didn't know how to explain their food product and the place was pretty dirty! I can let something's pass but an empty dirty restaurant I can't! The two staff members I saw went and stayed in the back after I ordered... I was so grossed out by the dirt around me I couldn't even finish my overly sweet popsicle.

Yelp
Now this is what i'm talking about, Holy Paleta understood the assignment when it comes to delivering Paletas for all tastes.. Not only do some of these flavors take me back to my childhood days, but the ingredients are quality and I love the variety across the board. I highly recommend getting a 12 pack to-go and get both sweet and savory .. The strawberry cheesecake, mazapan, keylime, chamango, strawberry basil, sandia takin were my favorites!!
google avatar

John C.

Yelp
Whenever I have family in town they always beg me to bring them back here. Parking is horrible as expected in this part of town. This place always overwhelms me with so many awesome choices. Everything can get something they love no matter their food preference or dietary restrictions. For sure will be back!
google avatar

Josue P.

Yelp
Paletas are very tasty. Customer service was very lacking. No smile or thank you. The first young woman was okay, the one that made it, seemed mad and like she has had a long day. A lot of customers coming in and out. Pricey. It was $20 for both paletas. Overall, it's a place you come once in a while to enjoy a good paleta but not something you do a lot due to the poor customer service and pricey items
google avatar

Justine D.

Yelp
Sooooo delicious and the staff are incredibly nice and helpful! Everything looked amazing. After much deliberation and assistance, I ended up getting the cucumber pop with chamoy and tajin drizzled on. The texture was so soft and chewable without melting! Loved the refreshing nature of the cucumbers mixed with the spice! Cute seating inside and paid street parking outside.
google avatar

Gina B.

Yelp
Idk how many flavors there are but there were a lot, I got the peanut butter with peanut butter cup covered in chocolate and pretzels. The girls behind the counter were nice, the place itself was very clean. The paleta is premade and they add your toppings to it. We enjoyed it.
google avatar

Yelp
Tbh, I'd say 10/5! But for the sake of Yelp we'll go with 5, lol! I was walking down little Italy and stumbled across this paleteria. When I poked my head in I was captured by all the vibrant colors and options available. I was curious and treated myself to the Maria's cookies and cajeta ice cream cone. It was the most delicious ice cream I've had in a very long time! Perfect amount of sweetness and tasted just like the Maria's cookies. I highly recommend you make a stop here if your looking for something sweet. I also seen that they ship their paletas if you are traveling and want to send some home.
google avatar

Ruby R.

Yelp
i tried the strawberries and cream paleta and it was soooo creamy and tasty! i'd definitely go back and try another flavor

Amy E.

Yelp
The flavors! SO GOOD! Definitely amazing! Super fresh. Lots of choices and samples are available. LOVED!

Yelp
The selection of paletas is overwhelming (in a good way) with the variety of paletas to choose from. They have all the paletas right in front where you choose whichever flavor you'd like. Then you choose if you'd like to dip your paleta in chocolate, etc & after you choose your toppings. What was kind of a bummer is the service we received. I was walking around exploring Little Italy & happened to see all of the paletas in the freezer right up front. Out of excitement we popped in to try it out & the energy and body language of the employees working just fell flat. They looked bothered by our presence & questions about the paletas. We weren't planning on staying to eat, but they were helpful to immediately let us know after paying their seating area was closed. We did see other people sitting at the tables inside, but it's all good, it was too hot to sit inside anyway. The taro paleta didn't taste as great as I'd hoped, but I'm down to give it another shot. Hopefully the next experience will be &better.

Jia K.

Yelp
I had a coconut bar. It's so tasty and rich, with lots of coconut chips! I wish this place was in O.C.
google avatar

Adrian A.

Yelp
So good on a hot or cold day! Sweet or savory you can't go wrong! Always gotta come here when I visit San Diego. Great vibe for the whole fam! Never a bad choice. I love the mango chamoy paleta as a fav! Parking can be a little rough in this area as it is a popular area to visit but plenty of paid lots around
google avatar

Trewen W.

Yelp
Was at Little Italy and saw read some reviews about this place about some upgraded popsicles! We got the arroz con leche and the coffee lechara. the popsicles themselves tasted great. You can also add dips and drizzles as well as other toppings. Staff was really friendly and helped us with our questions . It is really pricey for an upgraded popsicle though. Cool experience i'm glad we tried it !

Yelp
Came here recently because their paletas looked so good lol the aesthetics of the shop is adorable. Very eye catching, if you were to just be walking by do they did a great job at that. There were tons of options. At first it was a bit confusing on how to order. We walk in and there was a couple in front of us at the counter but no worker for a while. Everyone looked confused. But on the other side of the room there was another line and people being helped. I asked the one worker where the line was. You basically order at that very first counter as you walk in with all the paletas displayed then go over to the longer counter and add whatever toppings you want. I got a marzapan paleta and decided to have it dipped in milk chocolate. I found that with chocolate it made the peleta too sweet for me and the marzapan flavor didn't come through as much. I ended up peeling all the hardened chocolate off and eating the ice cream on its own. It was wayyy better this way! Not too sweet and the marzapan flavors came through A lot! Would recommend this flavor if you like the marzapan Mexican candy. My paleta came out to a little almost $8 think which I think is a little expensive BUT the ice cream bar is very big and very fresh. We live in OC but if I were nearby I would come back to try other flavors. Their yogurt with fruit looked really good too.

Yelp
absolutely loved the watermelon Paleta at Holy Paleta! The refreshing taste was spot-on, and the texture was delightfully smooth. The customer service was top-notch, with friendly staff who went above and beyond to make my experience enjoyable. Although the price was a bit on the higher side, the overall quality and taste of the Paleta made it worth every penny. I would definitely recommend Holy Paleta for a delicious and satisfying treat!
google avatar

Jenna V.

Yelp
I had the strawberry cheesecake dipped in dark chocolate with sliced almonds and mini m and m's. Came out to 10 bucks. I found the dark chocolate to be too sweet. Part of what I like with dark chocolate is how it's less rich, especially when paired with another sweet treat. Since I got 2 toppings, they didn't stick to the pop very well. That's partly my fault for ordering it, but it would have been nice if the employee told me to expect it to fall apart. Overall, I was a little disappointed. I ate most of it because I bought it and it was 10 bucks, but I probably won't come back.
google avatar

Gabriela E.

Yelp
AMAZING if you're an ice cream lover! So many flavors and so rich but yummy. They dip the pops in various different chocolate if you want too

Laura W.

Yelp
A little pricey but well worth it! Located in Downtown San Diego -Littke Italy Very very yummy

Yelp
Friendly service, sute little pop shop. Delicious pops. Perfect for a hot day...or any day.

Yelp
Let me start by saying that the ice cream at this place is truly exceptional. The flavors are rich, the textures are creamy, and the presentation is simply delightful. Each scoop is a work of art, meticulously crafted to perfection. From classic flavors to unique combinations, they have something to please every palate. Now, I must admit that the prices at this ice cream parlor are on the higher side. However, I firmly believe that it is an indulgence worth experiencing at least once. The quality of the ice cream, the attention to detail, and the overall experience justify the higher price tag. It's like treating yourself to a little luxury in the form of frozen goodness. While the cost may deter some, I assure you that the taste and experience make it a must-have. The flavors are so incredibly satisfying that every bite feels like a little piece of heaven. The ice cream is made with premium ingredients, and you can truly taste the difference. It's a treat that lingers on your taste buds, leaving you with a smile of pure bliss. So, if you're willing to splurge a little for an unforgettable ice cream experience, I highly recommend giving this place a try. Treat yourself or surprise a loved one with a visit to this delightful ice cream parlor. It's an opportunity to indulge in a sweet escape from the ordinary. I hope you find this review helpful, and may it inspire you to embark on your own ice cream adventure. Life is too short to miss out on the simple pleasures, and this ice cream is definitely one of them. Enjoy and savor every scoop!

Yelp
So many flavors in the display case! What a great treat for a hot summer day. I tried the creamy coconut dipped in chocolate and coated with coconut flakes and toasted coconut flakes. Despite piling on the coconut, the coconut flavor was subtle. It was pretty creamy and definitely very refreshing. Would absolutely come again to try other flavors!
google avatar

Andrew D.

Yelp
Great ice cream. No line when we came in and the servers pay really close attention to detail. I got a vanilla paleta w/ cajeta inside 8.8/10. Topped with drizzled dark chocolate and Cinnamon Toast Crunch. It was so good and about $10 per paleta. Location had nice bright decore with low music playing. Great spot for late night dessert.

Yelp
Came across Holy Paleta strolling down India street and figured why not? It was a nice night-but then again it's San Diego and when is the weather not pleasant? so there were plenty of folks there as well. Fortunately, there was still a ton of space to sit down. The only thing left to do was to then try and decide what to get. They even have some food and alcohol options as well, none of which interested me during my visit, because I wanted that sweet, cold treat. Even with paletas they had a whole bunch of different flavors and varieties, including dairy-free and vegan (not sure how those two are different,) and even a have them dipped and topped. Honestly, it was all too much for me so I just went with one of their 'off the rack' options, no dips: the strawberry cheesecake. I've had strawberry paletas before but the cheesecake added a slightly different texture and a deeper flavor to it. I don't know how adding anything to it would have made it better to be honest. No picture because I tore into it and finished it before I even had a thought to take one.
google avatar

Vanessa R.

Yelp
Cutest place ever, so many options and everything's so delicious in my opinion. The workers are so nice and are great to help for any recommendations if it's hard to make a decision for toppings. Def coming again and trying every paleta.
google avatar

Victoria L.

Yelp
The first time i heard of these guys was at the ice cream festival in north park. Customizable paletas - with a ton of variety as is! Ranging from your milk based to fruit based options. Then you can choose if you want chocolate / toppings. The skies the limit. However, the toppings add up the price FAST. I left with a $7.50 paleta... delicious (I've tried other paleta bars and it doesn't compare) but honestly really hefty just for adding a couple sprinkles of this and that. Kids love it, chicks love, look we like cute and instagrammable
google avatar

Patricia C.

Yelp
We came for the first time on a Saturday night and There weren't too many people sitting, but the whole seating area was messy with napkins and toppings from the paletas scattered throughout the floor. My husband and I were helped by 2 employees that looked annoyed the minute we walked in. We weren't greeted, they didn't explain the process or anything about the paletas/toppings. They stood there looking frustrated as we read through all the signs and skimmed over the paleta flavors. Definitely recommend friendlier employees, it really left a bad impression on us despite the paletas being very good.
google avatar

My D.

Yelp
Throughly enjoyed my cookies and cream thing. But the cashier was super rude. I asked for what was popular and what she would recommend. She sounded so annoyed and just said she didn't know.

Yelp
What we ordered | Avocado ($) | Milk and Dulce + Ruby Chocolate Drizzle ($) Taste | I thought the milk cream base of the popsicle was good with the ruby chocolate. thought there was too much of the dulce in the center but tasted good! Service | servers were nice and explained the menu Parking | street

Yelp
I love me a delicious paleta. They are an incredible cold and refreshing treat that everyone should try. Given they were developed in Mexico, I will usually get a flavor that has a unique Mexican twist. My go to's are horchata, tamarindo or Chamango. I need to try pistachio as that is a favorite flavor of mine. I think it is fun that you can add fun and crazy toppings. I always get the paleta plain so I can truly taste and revel in the flavor. This shop is significantly larger than its counterpart in Bonita. I love how there is ample seating inside to enjoy your paleta with friends or by yourself. Given the location of the store is in the middle of two heavily trafficked streets, I suspect they don't receive many casual pedestrians walking by which is too bad because this place is great. If you are in the Little Italy neighborhood or near the airport, make a point to stop and grab a sweet treat. You won't be disappointed. If you are feeling adventurous, ask if they have the mini size so you can buy more than one so you can try multiple options so you don't get too full. I will be coming by more often when the outside temperatures heat up.
google avatar

Dominique R.

Yelp
After dinner, while walking back to our car, the various paletas displayed and neon signs caught my eye. I loved how each paleta could be customized. I got the coconut paleta dipped in chocolate with coconut flakes. My boyfriend got the dulce de leche paleta dipped in white chocolate. With so many options, the preselected menu items were a great way to help pick what you wanted. The service was fast and friendly. I loved the inside and the decor. It was definitely an instagram type of vibe. Definitely will have to come back and try the other paleta flavors!
google avatar

Pris M.

Yelp
Just come this place is worth it, wide variety of flavors. Your sweet tooth will thank you :)
google avatar

Beverly K.

Yelp
Cheesecake white chocolate with graham crackers!! Oh my!!! I love how you can customize your own treats here. They have soooo many different flavors to choose from. There is something here for everyone. What a delicious white chocolate piece of heaven.
google avatar

Celeste N.

Yelp
Came to the store on a whim with friends and I was shocked to see how many options of bars there were for you to choose from. It was great. I loved the different types of toppings you could add to the ice cream as well! With so many options, it could be hard to choose so they also have preselected menu items to help you choose which I thought was cool. The interior of the shop is really cute and lots of places to sit and eat your ice cream! The ice cream was super good and I love how there are so many combinations you could choose from. Definitely coming back to try more!
google avatar

Ashley H.

Yelp
I love paletas and was so exited to try this cute shop in Little Italy. They have at least 25+ flavors to choose from lavender lemonade to matcha horchata. They have something for everyone. The best part was the toppings to elevate the paleta. I went with a horchata paleta, covered in milk chocolate and topped with mazapán. The paleta was perfect and the flavor was just like an horchata. It was easy to eat and service was great!
google avatar

Martín D.

Yelp
They are very delicious Never gotten a complaint from anyone I bring over to try them They loved every bite
google avatar

Israel H.

Yelp
Largest variety of flavors I've ever seen. We were a group of 5, each of us got something different and we all enjoyed what we got. I had the pepino flavored paleta and it tasted exactly like what you think it would. Fresh, slightly sweet but not overbearing for that particular flavor. Easy recommend.
google avatar

Angelynn N.

Yelp
There's so many options for paletas and toppings it's hard to even decide what you want. They have a lot of unique flavors you can't find at other places as well. Everything we ordered was amazing and tasted super fresh. The staff was super friendly too!

Yelp
Absolutely love love love this paleta shop! Located in little Italy, it is super adorable/insta worthy and a must try if you're craving a cold delicious treat! They have so many different flavors from fruity to creamy- sure to please any palate! Love the texture and creaminess of their paletas and their flavors are spot on! My favorite is their yogurt fruit paleta- it tastes creamy, not too sweet, with a nice tang from the fruit. A perfect balance in my opinion. They also have ice cream, which was also yummy!
