Home Ec and Best Bud Open New Store in Kensington - Eater San Diego

"Home Ec is a specialty food and gift store offering a curated selection of cookbooks, kitchen tools, and local gourmet pantry items. Originally established in Little Italy, the store has moved to a larger space in the Kensington neighborhood where it shares space with a floral design studio. The store focuses on San Diego-produced goods and serves as a pick-up location for other local businesses." - Candice Woo

I love how easy it is to pick up my favorite Astra Bake House Goods from Home Ec! They even delivered it to my car out front because I had two kiddos in tow. The rest of their shop is beautifully curated and creative!

I always feel inspired when I visit this gem of a specialty food/home shop! Their pantry items and cookbooks get me out of my cooking ruts, and it’s easy to find gifts for friends and loved ones who love good food (pretty much everyone, hah!) Love that they source cool ceramics and unique cutting boards from indie makers, too.

Google
A bright, beautiful and inspirational kitchen store down on India Street. Home Ec has a great variety of interesting cookbooks, beautiful spices, tasty drinks, and unique pieces that you'll need to take home. My pantry is overstuffed after the last visit, but I'll be back whenever a friend's birthday is coming up.

On top of this store being absolutely gorgeous, it's so apparent that all the goods sold in this store are thoughtfully chosen. Not only do I find something I love EVERY time I go in (or online...free local delivery) the shop owner provides a safe shopping experience. If you're a little nervous like me to be out in a pandemic, the regulating of how many shoppers and face masks always being required helps calm that anxiety!! Do yourself a favor and spend your money at a beautifully executed small business ! You won't be disappointed

Google
Home Ec is a delightful space and features the work of many artists. I liked the written descriptions of the work and each individual artist. I purchased several things , some as gifts, some for my home. If you are able to eat bread, you must try the multigrain organic loaf! Delish! Thank you Carynn and Home Ec.

Google
Love Home Ec — my go-to cool girl kitchen shop. Excellent selection of curated goods and unique collabs with local artisans. Plus, Carynn treats her customers like friends over for an afternoon cocktail. Whether you're looking for a gift, a treat, or pure inspiration, this is the place!

Google
I adore Home Ec! Not only is the shop airy and bright (and safely set up for social distancing last time I was there), but it is so so cute! You can shop online too and choose between pick up, local delivery, or normal shipping. The plants are happy and well cared for. The kitchenware is adorable, the cookbook selection great, and they carry Good Dirt products which isn’t always easy to find local. All around 10/10.

Google
I’m a huge fan of Home Ec. They have a wide array of books, pantry goods and items to make cooking fun and fresh. There’s a story behind many of the makers whose products are on their shelves. Those shelves have even spawned collaboration between the makers themselves! Don’t miss their line of Diaspora single origin spices and chili oils with influences from Asia, Africa and Mexico.

Yelp
My new favorite local shoppy shop. Home Ec (an indie kitchen shop) shares it's space with Best Bud (a flower studio). They carry the most adorable kitchen items and trinkets! So many cute food-themed goodies sourced from local artists and makers. Also loved the floral pieces they had out from Best Bud as well! Very unique and intentionally pieced together. As I was perusing around, I noticed they had a ton of community offerings- some were regular and others were special workshops and pop-ups. They regularly get bread deliveries from local bakers- I overheard multiple people stopping by asking if they had any fresh bread. They also host super interesting workshops that range from arts and crafts to cooking and dancing. The longer I wandered around the space, the more I felt that this was way more than a shop, it was a budding community that was SO fun, SO colorful, and SO vibrant. Will definitely be making it a point to pop into one of their workshops soon :)

Yelp
Cute little gem in little Italy. Reminds me of 8th and market. Came here for the chili oil. Annnnd it was delicious. Pairs perfectly with All and any types of food. The worker was very friendly she ask recommended a burger spot in national city because they use the same chili oil on their burgers. We can't wait to try it.

Yelp
Cute store, but maybe the owners should get someone else to help customers. Not warm or inviting, especially for a new store trying to get new customers. My friend asked if they had a certain item she was looking for. The girl said "no" with no follow up, no "is there anything else we can help you find" nothing. I've worked in customer service for 15 years. Not engaging with customers is crazy work considering they have only been open 3 weeks. Won't be returning, oh yea. We're POC ( my friend is Latin and I'm black). 0 help. But the white woman checking out seemed to get all the help. Curious to know how long this shop will last

Yelp
I like small, independently owned, businesses. This one has small and well thought out stock of goods. Their cookbook selection is phenomenal and they have some well selected dry goods as well They also have dishes, pots, and bowls that are well crafted and unique. And the wood bowls, serving platters, and utensils are different than what I have seen elsewhere. They also sell gift cards so, if you can't decide, you can let some else do that. I'm impressed.

Yelp
I love this place. As someone who appreciates a small business the owner was kind, not pushy, and so knowledgeable on the products she carries and why she chooses them. I also love how dedicated this business is to accessibility.

Yelp
Must come here!!! The place is super cute and has loads of gorgeous handmade goodies. Come here for gift shopping or whatever you need. Things are quite pricey but it's fun to stop by (with some coffee!) and hang around :)

Yelp
Love this store so much! It is curated so perfectly of what I wish I could stock my kitchen, pantry, and cookbook library. It's a tiny little space, but they pack it with local, handmade items along with artisan items. It's a great place to do a little shopping for yourself or a find a gift for any occasion. Also, service is always lovely. Parking can be difficult in the whole general Little Italy area, but worth the stop!

Yelp
I love this shop! They understand quality and it shows in how thoughtful the carefully considered the items are that they have chosen. And clearly the owner cooks!

Yelp
Really grateful for this store. Thanks to Home ec my produce lasts longer, my cooking is more flavorful and my garden is overflowing with San Diego seed bank goodness. Pictured are my favorite purchases. VEJIBAGS -leave your produce smiling for WEEKS when they would have otherwise wilted COOKBOOKS - the selection is on point always

Yelp
Honestly one of my favorite shops in SD. It's niche but has something for everyone. I keep up with a lot of food writers, editors and chefs as well as local artisans and Home Ec is the store that houses all of the new cook books and hot new condiments and food trends. Coming here is priority and the location is amazing. Foodies...Do yourself a solid and support this incredible shop.

Yelp
Home Ec is the best. The shop-owner makes the best use of the space she has, and it's clear that she carefully selects all the items offered for sale -- she's also knowledgeable about everything in her store, which is super appreciated, especially by those of us who are newbies to hobbies like gardening and cooking. But even if you have a black thumb and are more of a microwave dinner kind of person, you can still find items at Home Ec that will beautify your life, from adorable hankies to reusable totes to dishes!

Yelp
I went to James Coffee for a quick latte before picking up my kid this afternoon and found this little gem of a store. As a crazy diyer which includes anything from bread baking, to veg growing and and knitting, this place is paradise. The owner Corinne (sorry if not right spelling!) Is suuuper nice and passionate about the serious business of making stuff, the book selection is perfect (I own like 80% already, craving the other 20% ), super cool gardening tools, and beautiful small textiles, very well curated. Go get something for yourself and for all the growers and crafters in your life

Yelp
This store is just perfect. It has everything from unique small batch hot sauces to cookbooks, body scrubs, and beyond. I would definitely suggest giving it a look and grabbing some goodies for the home. Not to mention, it's attached to one of my favorite coffee companies, James Coffee Co. So stop by, grab an amazing cup of coffee, and grab some home goods. What better way to spend a portion of the day.

Yelp
Truly as good as it gets! All things fun for your home! I got a beautiful plant for $5!!!! $5?! I also got the Quickles kit (how to pickle anything), first I'm thinking green beans and onions and maybe the traditional ones on cucumbers. No matter your interest, you need everything in this store. I'm going back for the embroidery kit at my earliest convenience.

Yelp
Hands down the cutest shop. Seriously, help me. I got a cutting board for my brother and herbs for myself...and had to talk myself into leaving the store and going back to work. New go-to spot for gifts.

Garrett M.

Yelp
Very safe and friendly environment. Plenty of great gifts and home decor. Still trying to get through all the recipes in my cookbook!

Yelp
I do not cook, I do not garden, and I do not bake. But I cannot stop going into this store because I always find something I love. The owner is probably the most genuine person I've met in any retail environment. She's warm, friendly, knowledgeable on her products, and completely inclusive. Her inclusivity is evident through her products and her nature. And so many things are eco-friendly/ sustainable! I love everything about this store.

Yelp
Home Ec is my dream come true! It's inside James Coffee which I have loved for years, but now it has this wonderful place to buy all of my essentials. The shop owner is super knowledgeable about all of the products and extremely welcoming. I bought a plant, an organic dish towel and a salt dish and plan to take home another haul the next time I'm in Little Italy. Go there!

Anja J.

Yelp
This place is a home away from home for all those who spend too much time on Pinterest but lack the space or inspiration to bring their sweet boards to fruition. The woman behind Home Ec is the word "joy" in human form and her expertise and guidance will help you make things happen! 10/10 would devote my "self-care" day's to both browsing and getting my hands dirty in this shop.
