This place has the potential to be great but the wait time is ridiculous. The food is amazing and semi worth it but waiting 45 minutes for a cold sandwich that I can’t make substitutions to is insane. If they updated their system and maybe got a bigger store (I’m sure they have the money to because the place is always packed) it would be 10/10. They rarely answer the phone for call ins, not that it matters because you’ll still be waiting for forever

I've been going there all my life and this one experience change my whole outlook on them I always spend atleast 100 dollars 💸 because I don't come that often I order a steak and there was metal from the chopper I guess I will not be back there not same cash only so the Government can't tell how much they really make its old school scam to fraud the government and having you wait 45 minutes or longer for sandwich its ridiculous hope you guys get with times. 40 years of business gone and will tell all my friends the same.

This was my 1st time visiting in over 30 years. The wait is still long, and the food still tastes good. They, however, do have a better waiting system. I would recommend calling your order in.

30yrs of going here and food sl is still delicious 😋 steak sweet is my favorite for years now. I wish they would bring back the ice cream. I grew up eating here. Just love it. They just need friendlier employees. Their grouchy.

Good streak sandwich but I have to say, one of the most unprofessional places in chicago. Whomever own this place makes good money but need to educate themselves on "How to run a business and read a book on "Customer courtesy ". The customer waiting call out who's number for service is next because owner too lazy to invest in a better PA system.. Just Shameful..

They take too long considering that most of their consumers come here for lunch break. 2 separate lines just to put in an order.one line order and one line for payment. You should see the confusion on customers faces when asked to pay in a separate line.If you call in you STILL have to wait 20 to 30 minutes for your order. Patron here ONLY if you have an hour to waste. The Sandwich was good and the fries were soggy. I'd give this restaurant a 3 out of 5. New Management needed.

I have not been here in a while, at least 2-3 years. The place is bigger. That means enough room to wait. The one thing that has not changed is the wait time. If you call in you still going to wait. If you come in, and order, of course you're going to wait. So first off if you didn't place your order by phone, get in line and place your order. Then get in the other line and pay for your order. Then wait for your order. If you called in your order, stand in line to let them know you're there. Then wait for your name to be called. Then pay for your food. The food is the same delicious, and filling. The steaks sandwich with sauce, and fries with sauce are delicious. Also I remember being able to eat one sandwich all on my own. My bag was heavy so I thought they gave me the wrong order. Believe me when I got home I had a bag full of fries and a sandwich that was nicely sized. I can't eat all of this I will have to save some for later. I also picked up a extra sandwich for the hubby we'll see if he eats it. I know it's it will be too much for me to eat two sandwiches in a week. After this I'm going to need to hit the gym. Stay safe everybody you got to visit this place but be prepared to wait.

I love their food but, they seem to take personal vacations without notifying their customers. They could have a phone recording & or post it on your web page expressing that they are closed & will reopen on a particular date. Versus having the customer wasting their time & gas on a unnecessary trip. New folks pre ordering is highly suggested.

You don't have to read this explanation but the photos tell my story. In short, I my sandwich was wrong when my Mom and I got home. I had to pay for my corrected order. Heres why,,, If it's prepared the way you want. Beware! If your order is in writing, BE SURE that THEY read off to you what they allegedly write down for your order. Reason? If THEY get it wrong when u get to your destination, they will make you pay for the error (making it seem as if YOU didn't read what was written). They will correct the error ...at your expense. It will be corrected 45 minutes later (so don't be on your lunch break) and don't order fries because your originally special order fries (which was also read at the end of the written order) will be cold and you'll have to pay for that too unless you prefer cold fries with a freshly remade sandwich. Reason you're wrong (even if the receipt is wrong too), is because they "repeated the order 3 times" and "the security guard heard them read the order off" . Also make sure your memory is sharp. That will make YOU even more wrong...AT YOUR EXPENSE. Otherwise, the sandwiches are typically delicious.

You need to order first. I also heard the turkey sub is really good. I had the steak hoagy, Polish sausage & fries. the fries are homemade. it was good.

The traditional Hoagy was quite tasty.. the more popular "Sweet Steak" Hoagie is wildly Popular but I'm personally not a fan.. BUT.. you should DEFINITELY try it once... they havent been this popular for no reason

It looked abandoned, and closed! It definitely didn't look like it was open for business. That part of town I probably wouldn't open for business either. If anyone knows an alternate safe location, please advise.

They now sell steak sandwiches made with impossible meat and turkey just FYI. Iconic place. Long a** lines and wait. Great steak sandwiches and fries with sauce, along with the hoagies. This spot is legendary, so those who get it, get it. No need for a long review! It's worth the headache (every once in a while)

Disclaimer, I've been going here since I was a small child, so over30 years. Service is ridiculously slow. If you know, you know how to do it here. You place your order,pay, sit in your car for 20-30 min, and then go back in for your order. It is never faster than that unless you get there at 11am when they open. At opening time, there is usually a small line. Sucks but the steak sweet is amazing and the steak fries with sauce are a must have. Cash only so be prepared, which is another sucky part for what they charge.

It would be great if this place used different/separate cutters for the pork-based and turkey products. For non-pork eaters, do NOT order ANY hoagies from jere because ALL meats are cut using the same cutter. CROSS-CONTAMINATION. IOWs, non-pork eaters are getting pork remnants and flavor on their sandwiches. The service is basically the same as it has always been. Slow. I think I'm still waiting for my order from more than 6 years ago. The major differences between now and 20 years ago are the higher prices, smaller portions and bigger waiting area. Service is still extremely slow. Inside is COLD!!!! Eight chairs are provided for those lucky to snair one during your long wait. Ain't nothing changed since I began coming in 1978.

The steak sandwich is going to be amazing every single time. From highland to Chicago just for this sandwich!

I grew up eating the steak sandwiches and fries. I never had anything else they sell because of how great tasting the steak is. I've introduced so many friends and family members to the place. I look forward to continuing to enjoy the steak when I'm in town.

The sweet steak sandwiches are delicious. It reminds me of the old Taurus Flavors (Black owned) on 87th and stoney Island. I miss my Taurus Flavors. Oh well. But if you're looking for the best sweet steak then head ova to Home of the Hoagie

Awesome good food. Been around for a long time. Always good and different. I love the beef sandwich is my favorite and those fries in that's delicious sauce. I'm originally from Chicago but I don't live there anymore. But when I come home it's a must that I get there at least once usually twice. Then all my family have me to bring them food back to California. Long time favorite of the Allen family.

The food was delicious! I had a tray of turkey subs and a steak hot and sweet. The fries were good with the sauce. The staff is friendly and try to get you out as soon as possible. LaLa took my phone order and was spot in with the way my food was prepared! It's a heck yeah for me!

I finally tried this place after years of hearing about it! In college, everyone used to talk about how much they loved this place and couldn't wait to get it when they went back home. I got there not too long after they opened on a Saturday. I was number 19 and got my food in 20 minutes. I wasn't expecting the staff to be friendly (based on the stories I've heard). However, the person that took my order was friendly. I told her it was my first time there and asked her what came on the steak sandwich and she kindly explained. I ordered a steak sweet & hot (no cheese) , large turkey hoagie and fries with sauce. Everything was delicious! I started out with 1/2 a steak sandwich, a small portion of the turkey hoagie and some fries. The food was so good that I had to finish the steak sandwich, LOL! My mom, who is a very particular about her food, even enjoyed the turkey hoagie and fries. I will be back, close to opening! I appreciate how the food tasted fresh and didn't mind paying almost $30 for it. Tips for those who will visit for the first time: 1. Cash only 2. Come early? I guess if I would've came later, the wait would've been way longer than 20 minutes. 3. Order your food in the middle section. 4. Then, move to the far right section to pay. 5. Wait for your number to be called and pick up your food in the far left section. Last thing - I wanted to take a picture of the menu board so people can see what their current prices are. There were some customers standing in front of it, so I didn't take the picture. I took a picture of my receipt: Steak sandwich is $9.69, large turkey hoagie is $10.59, fries is $2.80 and the sauce on the fries is $0.89.

Love this place I get the same thing every time steak sweet an hot either light sauce or sauce on side depending my mood a large Turkey an ham sub for later but please hold the onions they put a bucket of onions on there also get my fries fried hard because the mild sauce makes fries soggy an heres a tip if you dont have 30min in your schedule dont go an dont go up there complaining the sandwich are cooked fresh an this place is packed when the doors open at 11 keep doing what ya doing

The Home of the Hoagy serves a GREAT Cheesesteak!! I buy two at a time because I know that one is NOT enough!! The service is good because it is usually very busy. The service is kind and is fast as they can make the steaks. The Hoagys are tasty too. The steaks with Sweet peppers is what I usually purchase. I love them.

I moved to LA 15 years ago and missed this place. On my last day in Chicago, my wonderful niece got me a steak sandwich and some fries with extra sauce. Wow, it tasted the same... so damn good! I might have to come back to Chicago in the summer to get some more!

The signature steak sandwich is messy, greasy, awesomeness. I love how juicy the chopped steak is and the bread soaks up that flavor but it doesn't become totally wet. Whatever you get must be complimented with the fries with steak sauce. It's as soggy as can be but the sauce is so delicious. The cashier lady and staff guy calling out ticket numbers were very nice. The downside was at lunch hour, they can be very busy and it took an hour for me to get my food.

Must go on a good day not too busy and not too slow. It's the same guy at the front desk always gives great customer service and good luck on a park. Sometimes a hit or a miss honestly.

The food was wonderful. On Friday, June 2, 2023 was my for the first time. I was surprised to stand in one line to order my food and get in another line to pay for my food. I was so shocked because this never happen to me. I saw people sitting in chairs like they were waiting for a meeting to start. But over all the food was delicious. I order the large steak sandwich with the sweet sauce.

The lady at the window is rude as hell she gets mad at me because I can't understand her due to her having no teeth like baby don't get mad at me take it up with the dentist and get some dentures. Y'all need to hire people that we can actually understand preferably one that has all teeth.

50 minutes y'all! I got here right when they opened up at 11 and it took about 15 minutes to put my order in. It's definitely a process. The order line is in the middle. Once you place your order, you go to the right line to pay. That's another 10 minutes in line before you actually get to pay. And then about 30 minutes later, they'll call your number to let you know your foo is ready. That's what the left window is for. They called my number at 11:50AM. Wow. I ordered their sweet steak sandwich. A huge sandwich full of chopped beef, coated in their sweet stuff, with cheese, sweet peppers and tomatoes. A very messy but delicious sandwich. There's a lot going here, I just don't know if it's worth the 50 minutes. I think Taurus Flavors sweet steak sandwich and it probably only took 5 minutes to get my order. But unfortunately they've been closed for a while now, so Home of the Hoagy will do for now.

They are always closed!!!! Horrible black business and then, they'll say balaclava didn't support them, start by having consistency and fix your damn atm!

Turkey sub with extra peppers. I may have gotten one extra pepper. Fries were cold and dry tho 4 stars for the sandwich, 2 stars for the fries.

It takes an hour just to get a sandwich even if you phone ahead. Food is good though. I heard not to go over your lunch if you're in a hurry...No refunds if you leave before getting your food.

Called an order in ,was told it'd be ready in 30 minutes.. my order wasn't started until I gave my name at the window One hour and 10 mins for two hoagies!!! Damn Shame ...

Nice friendly service! I was there when they opened and it wasn't really a long wait. I met a lot of nice people while waiting. It was an enjoyable wait.

Visited this establishment for the first time in a long time. The food was phenomenal. The lines were a little confusing and the wait was a little long but the food made up for all that. I'm thinking about going back for a diet cheat day.

I Love the new impossible sweet steak sandwich. This was a great idea for the non-meat eaters. Thanks for thinking about Us. I really appreciate it. I forgot to mention those delicious fries with that special sauce topped it off. I highly recommend it.

My first time trying this so I didn't know what to expect but it was delicious! Next time I would get mine without the sweet sauce because I like more savory and spicy tastes but it was great nonetheless. The only downfall was the wait in the line and we waited on the phone for about 1 hour before getting there and no one ever came on to take our order.

I ordered at 2:18 and damn near an hour for a turkey sandwich. No refund because I would have left. No Sandwich is that good. Save yourself the frustration and headache. Worst customer service ever. Slow as hell. Sandwich was basic at best

This is my hometown favorite restaurant.. Whenever I am home I have to stop and grab food. Steak sandwich and small Hoagy. Never a disappointment and the wait does not bother me at all. Call my order in and check in and 10 minutes later I got food!!

I have been going to this place since I was 9 years old. Same recipe for the food, service is always with a smile but I have often waited a while for my food, but it is worth it. Always roll on the floor out of sheer enjoyment, ruins my diet every time but who cares!! I'm now old enough that my generation takes their grandchildren to get a steak sweet, large fry with sauce and some homemade ice cream! Keep the hoagies flowing!!

So I have been wanting to try HOH for years because people kept telling me it was better than their competitor who shall remain nameless. Pros- *Steak with all hot peppers was so good!! .. *Fresh fries were great but only great when fresh...they were simply okay when warm. Also, one order is enough to share. Only order if you're into soggy messy sticky homecut fries *Hoagy was very good and I didn't need to add extra oil like I do sometimes at their competition *the people were very nice even though I asked a couple of questions before ordering Cons- *the process to order was odd. You order in one line, pay in one line and then pick up your food up in another line. *they don't accept any returns after you leave which is fine, but there is no table to check your food before leaving. So if there is a mistake, I guess you're SOL. *cash only (it's literally 2018. Why are there still cash only places?!) All in all, my food was great as everyone told me it'd be. I'll probably be back but not soon cause it's not close to my house or healthy at all. I'm just glad to check this local joint off of my food bucket list.

Just updating this review to say that I've been back 5 times since this review (I hadn't had this in like 10 years so I been addicted ever since I went back), and the wait was one hour every time. I have not gotten my food in 35 minutes or less since the review above. Steak sandwich and fries wit sauce are 12 outta 10 every time. I don't mind the wait cuz its so good. If you show up hungry, just make sure you have a small snack to eat so you don't starve while you wait. That's what I do. Small bag of chips does the trick.

Completely disappointed. I only ordered a simple hot dog with fries and the wait was over 30 minutes. Not worth the wait if you're coming for a quick bite. The waiting room looks like a doctors office. Will never come back here.

If you from a major Metropolis and live as an adult somewhere other than where you lived as a child, then you no doubt find the foods of your hometown deeply satisfying. ... Whenever I return home to Chicago, there are a number of places that I MUST visit before my time in the city ends and Home of the Hoagy is one of my top three priorities. So much so in fact, that although my hotel was almost 50 miles away (Glenview, IL), I had no problem whatsoever driving 1 hour each way and paying about $9 in tolls to have what I consider one of the best sandwiched on earth. Think of it as a Philly Cheesesteak, but Chicago-style. It has many of the same ingredients, but done slightly differently. For example, the steak meat is chopped finer than your average philly, almost to the point of being ground beef. The seasoning is more flavorful and peppery and the final touch comes with the addition of a red sweet sauce, candied nuclear green peppers and topped with thin slices of tomato. If you want it to taste more like a tradition philly cheesesteak, then ask for no sauce. But if you want the real Chicago flavor, the sauce and sweet peppers are a must! You might think that with such simple ingredients someone would be able to match the taste, but never have I had a steak sandwich shop duplicate its amazingness, although I will admit Taurus Flavors occasionally comes close. ... The Famous Steak Sandwich has been a Southside staple since 1969 and has been coveted by regular folks and celebrities alike. I was please to see they have a new and larger location as of my 2019 visit. I was further pleased to see they have improved the speed of their operation and the wait time for my order was drastically less, even though the place was packed. While the steak sandwich is indeed fantastic, don't miss out on any of their hoagy's, but particularly the Ham & Turkey Combo. I'm not sure what they soak the onions in or what sauce they use to make it so flavorful... but honey child, this is some good eatin'!!! Only a few places I've ever visited even come close to the deliciousness of the hoagy sandwiches here AND if you are a french fry lover, those are not to be missed either. Simply delicious with or without the sauce. ... FINAL THOUGHTS Bottom line, this is absolutely my favorite steak sandwich on earth and has been since I was 10 years old. Nothing compares to its magnificence and if you come here and don't agree, please don't tell me. I will honestly think you are without a doubt certifiably insane! 2019/109
