Home Team BBQ Opens New Location in Greenville, South Carolina | Eater Carolinas

"After COVID-19 delays, the doors swung wide open on May 19, officially welcoming Greenville residents to Home Team BBQ in a launch that owner and pitmaster Aaron Siegel called “especially sweet” after nearly four years of work. I found the menu heavy on award-winning smoked meats and treats, including smoked chicken wings, smoked turkey, pulled pork or ribs, smoke-ringed beef brisket, house-made sausage, and a charred burger draped with cheese and crisp bacon, plus two green salads and six homemade barbecue and hot sauces; customers can order a platter to try them all alongside traditional sides like beans, slaw, Brunswick stew, hash and rice, collards, crunchy tater tots, pork cracklin’s, barbecue nachos and creamy mac-n-cheese. The extensive bar menu features the restaurant’s signature frozen cocktail, the Game Changer, and even a frozen Irish coffee, and guests are greeted by the glowing, smiling Home Team hog mascot in a spacious 7,000-square-foot dining room framed by the Blue Ridge Mountain skyline, concert posters, photographs and a mural of the late Colonel Bruce Hampton." - Steve Seguin

First time trying and i got my food to go. It's in a nice area but there are only a few parking spots by the buildings and there are serveral other businesses around so parking can be hard to find. But got the food home i live about 10 mins away it was barely warm but the ribs were ok not bad. The meat an beans were surprisingly good and mac and cheese was awful idk but to be fair it didn't look that good. Overall not terrible.

The place is well decorated and clean. Staff is kind and knowledgeable, and they try to accommodate all needs. It’s great for families. They have an outdoor space as well, very appropriate for these summer nights. They run out of meats, just like any other BBQ spot so there will be things of the menu that won’t be available. They also have different extra dishes every day. The brisket was great! I didn’t love the Mac and cheese but mixed with the beans made it much better! I will be back!

So we ended up here by mistake because the original destination did not have dine-in service on Memorial Day. We are so glad we ended up here. The food was amazing! We had fried ribs, and wings as an appetizer and they were both delicious. We also ordered brisket sliders and mac and cheese which were all tasty. We can't wait to go back here and take more people with us. I always give a sweet tea review and this one was maybe a 3 out of 5. It was okay, but not your Southern sweet tea like you would get at Dunkin Donuts. Our service name was Joey. He was very attentive and I always love it when a server brings a refill of my drink without me even noticing. By the time my glass was empty I realized there was another full glass next to it. Best top tier service!! I'll be sure to request him when I take a group there. Oh! There's some kind of mixture they bring out with the fried ribs that's got a good kick to it. I was a little skeptical but it's excellent! If you like bold spicy flavors make sure you try it. They also have an enclosed patio that can be bought out. It's normally the area where people sit if they have dogs. But I was told it's cleaned pretty good daily. Just wanted to mention it in case anyone has allergies. If I had to mention an improvement, the only thing I was expecting was a manager to come by and ask about the food or our experience but that never happened. Anyways ....... I can't wait to go back to this place!

Google
The bbq wings and bbq nachos were great. They came out hot. The servers need to bring plates for wings and nacho- we should not have to ask. Despite that, great dining experience.

Google
Stopped at Home Team BBQ for lunch during a road trip and it hit the spot. As soon as we walked in, it was clear this place is a go-to for locals, busy but efficient. The service was fast, and the food came out quick, which was great for getting back on the road. We ordered a half rack of ribs, half chicken, baked beans, collards, and mac and cheese. Everything was flavorful and satisfying. Bonus: the food traveled well and made for an excellent late-night snack. If you go, don’t forget to grab a free sticker at the hostess counter. Would definitely stop again.

Google
You guys provided such a great time. We really enjoyed ourselves every time we come in here it’s such a hoot. You know the boys when they come around. They have a good time. The food is outstanding. We really love the ribs on a Tuesday after we crushed the game come in. Our bones is all sore. We sit down Get us a big old heap and bowl of potato salad and scarf that thing down with some sweet tea. Oh God Lord, have mercy. Love you guys so much thank you

Laura R.

Google
The food is always fresh and delicious ! If you have not been here yet , you are missing out. The brisket is AMAZING.

BuffaloSteve

Google
Very good experience overall. Excellent BBQ. Tried the beef brisket: Wow! Just wow. You know how to do brisket right!! Tried the Smoked Turkey and it was juicy and delicious! The fried and smoked pork ribs were to die for. Some of best ribs ever tried. Well done! My only gripe would be that all their bbq sauces were very vinegar tasting. You should have one sweet one that doesn’t overpower in vinegar for us Texans who don’t subscribe to strong vinegar tasting sauces. 😂 The potato salad was okay but the potatoes were slightly undercooked. The Brunswick stew was delicious. Service was fast and friendly.

Matt R.

Yelp
Home Team is a great spot in Greenville. Really good food and great for families. Right across from double stamp brewery with lots of outdoor space so you can easily kill time if there's a wait for a table

Larney C.

Yelp
I've never tried this particular bbq restaurant before, I was pleasantly surprised. Parking is good, the hostess is nice and was accommodating. The waitstaff are very knowledgeable and on top of everything. The restaurant has various pieces of art and a well stocked bar area. The food was good. I had the cheddar jalapeño sausages and my nephew had the pulled pork. The beans were good, very good. The Brunswick stew was just okay. The sauce options are exceptional. Will most definitely be back.

Yelp
I have come to accept the inflation prices unfortunately and have regained my love for home team. Their wings are top notch and need to be experienced with the Alabama white sauce. We still love the brisket nachos as well. Wife got the salad with brisket on the side and she said it was delicious and good value with a nice portion of brisket. Server did a good job tonight too.

Yelp
It's been a little over a year since we dined at Home Team Barbecue. We came to celebrate an early birthday with my brother. This time the food was only ok to me. We had a very nice server Stephen, and it was nice spending time with my family.

Yelp
We were driving by and I had made a mental note to stop here after the museum visit when I saw the Vintage Fair in the back lot. It was hot when we returned so we had lunch first, were seated right away. The nice young lady server was super friendly, helpful and made several lunch suggestions. The brisket sandwich and fried ribs were good. I ordered the broccoli casserole which was a nice side to go with the ribs. It was for sure South Carolina Barbecue and were glad for the experience.

Yelp
I've been waiting all vacation week to get some BBQ in me and I picked 100% correct in going Home for some. I read the mixed reviews on Yelp and concluded that a lot of the dislikes were dishes I'd never order. Pro tip: Order BBQ when a place is named BBQ. Because you can see I went for straight pulled pork and it was rock solid. Ton of meat, nicely seasoned, and a plethora of sauces to drive it home to your taste. I mixed mustard, vinegar, and hot sauce, and that turned into a divine "South Carolina" mix (says the guy from up north). The beans were thick and rife with meat. The fried mac balls were an excellent daily special on the side, and even though the special cost more than other sides, there was no upcharge for having it with the meal! What a deal! You have a choice of indoor or outdoor, you have good quick service, and you have all this BBQ you came down south for. Win win win. Make it happen.

Yelp
Folks got a chance to dine in at the Home Team BBQ for the first time. The Service and Staff were very Polite and Professional . Food was very good and especially the Brunswick Stew was Great. Now it was Crowded and Loud so if that bothers You just beware. Give it a Try We did and liked it!!!!!!!

Yelp
Dismayed evening. Unfortunately waiter had to ruin the evening. Unexpected from here. Will be back for redemption.

Yelp
I've been to a few locations now and really enjoyed this one. Cool area with other options aswell. BBQ is great. Chili is comparable to TX chili.

T M.

Yelp
Wife and I each had their chicken plates which were great. Sides were good as well. Taking off a star because never in my 60 years have I paid over $4 for iced tea. I don't mind paying $20 for a plate of BBQ, but $4.25 for a glass of tea is insane.
google avatar

Rebeca O.

Yelp
Wings were awesome, and the iced Irish coffee was perfect. Get the death relish and mix with white sauce - perfection!

Melissa G.

Yelp
Good food and ambiance. Food is a bit pricey for what you get but worth it. Beer rotation is good but I wish they carried more local craft beer.
google avatar

Sydney L.

Yelp
My family loves this place! We really like the burgers, tacos, and specials. (We really don't eat bbq out bc my husband is a pit master!) The sides are great too. All of the sauces are so good! We've always had great servers! They are really great with kids too! We enjoy the laidback scene and it's always fun to watch whatever game is on.
google avatar

Yelp
loud, expensive, bbq isn't that great... sides were good but portions are small. Sauces are okay... but not great.

Yelp
Ok so I've been here 4 times now and my three stars is a reflection of my collective experiences there. Let's start with the good things- their staff is terrific and the restaurant is very stylish and well laid out. The menu is mid sized, not too big, not too small, so you hit that middle of the road where there's variety, but not at the expense of quality. Each table has several sauces for you to try and many of the dishes are great. I've tried many things here, and keep going back to their 1/2 chicken, which is terrific. I also like their pork rinds and you can't go wrong with the pulled pork. I'm not a fan of a couple things there, I found the Buffalo chicken dip lacking, and wasn't impressed with the jalapeño cheddar sausage. But there's something for everyone here. That said, the things I don't care for is the fact that this is a very loud restaurant. I don't know how to remedy that, but it is what it is. The price point on the menu stings a bit, so that makes Home Team not somewhere I'd go to regularly. The biggest issue I have too is it is a nightmare trying to turn into and get out of their parking lot on Lauren's Road, it's pretty sketchy with all the traffic. I hate to give a place 3/5 that hits so many high points, but the drawbacks are very pronounced. I'll come back again, because this place is still new and growing. At the end of the day, Home Team isn't my first choice for dinner in Greenville, but I won't say no to it either.

Yelp
updated Review: Went back the day before yesterday to use the gift cards and did some takeout. They treated the gift cards as other than cash so we were charged the 3%+ fee even though they were not credit cards. Takeout Order: 2 orders of 3 Meats plus sides, 1 pull pork plate, 12 wings:: Unfortunately the guests we had over who we shared the Q with were not impressed at all (dry chicken, dry wings, and fatty pull pork). Personally, I liked the smoked turkey, which was moist and tender. No food poisoning like last time, but this will be the last time we go there. Too many other high quality Q joints that simply out do this spot by far.

David T.

Yelp
Really not very good. They're just lucky enough to be in a good location. They make up for it by being overpriced.
google avatar

Rachel G.

Yelp
We frequent the Home Team BBQs in Charleston and love that everything is consistent. We always enjoy the portion sizes and like knowing that literally everything is good. My parents even ordered the 3 meat plate and got a few bonus slices of brisket! The service could use improvement, but overall I have grown to love and appreciate HT. Pro tip: the Alabama white sauce is the ranch of the BBQ world. Ask for it!
google avatar

Christopher C.

Yelp
The food was absolutely incredible, legit 10/10. We ordered the Boar's Head plate, along with the nachos. Our tastebuds were loving it. Thank you Tina and thank you to everyone else who served us. Great group of staff! See ya again soon Home Team!

LaPaula L.

Yelp
If I could give no stars I would. The food was downright disgusting, and the customer service was terrible and very disappointing. It was obvious they do not like servicing African American people.
google avatar

Chandler B.

Yelp
That crisp smokey pulled pork pairs SO well with the sweet soft Hawaiian bun. A little sauce on top and it is a freaking home run.. i ate two.
google avatar

Laurel R.

Yelp
After reading the reviews, we almost didn't make it to the restaurant, but we wanted to give them a try. And boy, am I glad we did! We found two seats at the bar and were quickly greeted by several of the bartenders and within minutes had a frosty and potent margarita in front of us. Started off with the appetizer 4 fried pork ribs with Alabama White Sauce. These were smoky and tender, the fry gave it a bit of a crunch and the AWS just took it over the edge. I told my husband these are a "10" and after sampling Lewis BBQ last week (which was disappointing all across the board), I was so happy. The husband had small appetite so he ordered the Pulled Pork Slider and Tater Tots - both were fab. And they had a Pastrami special today- and ordered the Platter. The Pastrami was so juicy, tender, and smoky. The cucumber/tomato salad had the right cleansing effect and the mac and cheese had a nice peppery note to it. We ran into the effervescent Chef Jessica near all the cool posters and enjoyed our conversation with her. Its in a fun "food" and games area. We'll be back!

Sophie K.

Yelp
Great hangout spot to watch sports and hang out with friends, atmosphere continues to be great. We love to bring friends to HomeTeam to share appetizers like the nachos, buffalo chicken dip, or wings, and service is kind and hospitable. Bar staff continues to make our experience wonderful.

Yelp
It's alright. I mean you get all hopes up cause it looks like it's gonna blow your mind. All really dry though. Wings, pork, and ribs. Dry, dry, and bland. Nothing special. It gets worse just wait. Plenty of sauces but none of them are really any good. Just really watered down, and taste like water on dry pork. Tater tots are awesome though! Lastly, the sides, and desert. Greens are on point! Slaw sucks. But the banana pudding. The one thing that's hard to mess up and you look forward to at the end of every BBQ meal is....... Crap. The container they put it in should be illegal. A huge raised bottom of the container allows this restaurant to cheat you out of your money while serving you zero banana, banana pudding. This place is way overpriced and NOTHING tastes fresh. Next.

Darcy W.

Yelp
The food was great and it was a fun atmosphere. Wait staff were friendly! We will be back!
google avatar

Gregory W.

Yelp
Late night menu is simple and good. When I travel to Greenville, I often come at a time that everything is closed. So home team barbecue is my go to spot for some good food late night in GV. I was ordered a salad. The salad ingredients are always fresh. Also like their smoke wings too. The only person that I have seen working there is the bartender. I don't know her name, but she always nice and always get my order right. She is outstanding.
google avatar

Melissa C.

Yelp
I ordered take out here and didn't like it. There was a group of drunks right outside the restaurant, and it was fun to walk through. lol, the restaurant was really cold and not inviting, so I was glad I got take out. Didn't really interact with the staff, so I can't say anything on service. Got the food, got home, and everything was ice cold. I was sad. The meat was mostly fat, too, so there was not much real meat there. They give you little sauce packets. It's not enough to cover the meat with so you have to order 5 extra packets to get anything. Yeah, nothing special about this place.
google avatar

Pat A.

Yelp
Salad was really fresh and tasty (brisket was a bit dry for my taste). Sports bar/ family place looks like could handle big groups.
google avatar

Tim N.

Yelp
This is a loud and boisterous place that is clearly set up for being a happening night life spot what with the large tables and open areas, including outdoor seating. It is somewhat reminiscent of a Buffalo Wild Wings that serves BBQ instead of wings. Service was great for our mid-week lunch visit. Water at the table, in a small milk jug, which is indicative of the style of decor, a rustic, Southern, tin-roof kind of decor. Multiple sauce flavors are at the table as well. Let's pause here to say that the tater tots were excellent, crisp, soft at the same time and served with a harissa mayo and rosemary salt. Large portion size too! The BBQ is also a healthy serving. Almost too much, I felt the meat sweats might be coming on. Served on a Kings Hawaiian bun. A little garnish of a pork rind on one side and house made pickled cucumber & red onion on the other side (typical, helps to cut the sweetness of the sauces). Cole slaw was not vinegar based, but cream based and it was a light touch on the cream, also a plus. But the sandwich is $14.95 and that is just a bit steep (like 50% more than some other local BBQ places, e.g. S.B.H or Bucky's). But, it is not about the BBQ for this restaurant, it is about the "scene", and I hate to call it a "bar scene", but it is probably hopping in here late on a Friday or Saturday night, and even louder than normal. And that's what you are paying for, the lively crowd, see and be seen - decent enough BBQ though.

Cliff H.

Yelp
While the food was pretty good (been looking for good brisket and they delivered), but overall an OK experience. Loud ambiance (too hot to sit outside) made it difficult to communicate. One of the sauce bottles splattered and ruined my wife's blouse. (They did give her a t-shirt). It was chalked up to being the wrong lid put on the bottle (evidently no one checked) $4.25 for one iced tea? And 3% credit card fee on top of high prices?? In the end, a brisket sandwich, Turkey wrap with included sides and one glass of tea shouldn't end up at $48 (with tip). Not worth it to make the trip back.
google avatar

Diona M.

Yelp
I'm not really a bbq person but this place was good! I had the Turkey wrap which was delicious along with their collard greens! Our server was pretty attentive and friendly which is a plus. Also if you like banana pudding then I highly recommend you try theirs! Definitely plan on coming back.

Yelp
On 2/27/23 around 7:45pm, We came to HomeTeam BBQ on Lauren's RD expecting to try their food for their first time. Unfortunately, that did not happen. We were seated by the host as soon requesting a table for two. However, this would begin the waiting game for a server to come over and acknowledge our table. We sat there for 17 mins without any type of acknowledgment. I am aware of businesses being short staff, however we sat there and watched servers just completely walk past our table. A simple "be with you all soon", would have sufficed" for the wait however we never received anything. After 20 mins we decided to leave still without any type of acknowledgement. I take pride in patronizing and reviewing businesses and leaving bad reviews is not my thing. However, everyone must be held accountable. Please advise and train employees on proper customer service protocol and manners.
google avatar

Kathryn H.

Yelp
We came in one Friday afternoon to check this place out. I had always heard about Home Team in CHS but was nice to see it here to try it out! We didn't know what to get so we ordered that big platter with a variety of meats lol. For roughly $80 it was a pretty good deal and came with a plethora of sides! Collards were very vinegary so I wasn't a fan. Brunswick stew was more on the thin, bright soupy side rather than a thick stew but flavors were great. Mac and cheese was good too! The board came with wings, ribs, brisket, pulled pork and smoked turkey along with some dips and sauces and breads and pork rinds and pickles. Brisket was thin and sad, a little dry, wings were great! Smokey and perfect. My boyfriend LOVED the smoked turkey! It was good. But 100% their best meat was the ribs. They were fall off the bone good! Next time I go, I'm going for the ribs, getting a whole rack. Seriously some of the best ribs in town. So tender. Only other place I've had amazing ribs like this was Grandma's Kitchen (and I think they're closed now). So this is my go to place for ribs. Ample seating, next to a brewery. I hope this place lasts mainly for the ribs

Cory L.

Yelp
Sides were good. However, brisket was tough. I've made better at home. Service is good.
google avatar

Ashley H.

Yelp
This is my favorite spot in Greenville to get brisket! But once an entree item is gone, it's gone, so keep that in mind if you have a hankering for something specific. Personally, I was craving sliced brisket, but heading there late on a Saturday meant settling for chopped brisket instead--not that there was much settling involved, because it was mouthwatering regardless. Each table is set with sauces of varying flavors and heat levels, which makes it easy to try a bit of everything. The collard greens and mac and cheese were a fabulous compliment to the meal, as was the Shiner Ruby Redbird ale. This will be a great spot to catch all the games during football season!
google avatar

Jennifer K.

Yelp
Went there last for their late night limited menu! I had the salad with brisket and it was great. My friend got the same salad but brisket was very fatty. Their nachos are some of the best I have had and I am not a nachos person!:) Go check them out.
google avatar

Jared D.

Yelp
The setting is great for a nice night out. Service was great here also. To be honest, the food was just ok. It wasn't bad at all, but nothing amazed me here. I didn't feel like the food portions were as good as other options around town. The Brisket was expensive to only get 2 pieces with the sliced plate. Perhaps the wide variety of drinks helps this be a place you want to go. Will definitely go back, but it isn't the type of place I want to go all the time.

Duane S.

Yelp
The food was okay. We had chopped pork sandwiches. The meat was tender and lean. I wish the sauces were more like barbecue sauce. They were watered down and bland. The sides were "so-so", nothing special. The atmosphere was a-typical for a barbecue place but very noisy. Our waiter was polite, but not real attentive. He forgot one of the beverages and brought it when we asked about it. It was not on the bill which says to me he wasn't really listening to the order? He did make up for it and apologized and we got the drink on the house.

Angela D.

Yelp
If you love authentic Carolina east coast pork barbecue, you will enjoy the food here. The Brunswick stew is amazing and the closest I have tasted to my family recipe. The pulled pork is moist and the flavor is classic pit bbq - smoky and melt in your mouth. The ambiance is sports bar and they have a fair selection of local brews as well as a full bar. It's a fun place with great food. Come on and check it out!
google avatar

Jim L.

Yelp
First time to visit Home Team BBQ, the pulled pork sandwich was very good, also had pulled pork with pimento cheese melt, also excellent. The patio is dog friendly, they had water bowls available, will definitely go back.

Ananda S.

Yelp
Nick was our server and he is the epitome of what the job should look like. Nick is warm, friendly, and made great recommendations for what to try on the menu. Nick was attentive without being overbearing. If you ever stop in to HT BBQ, ask for Nick. The food, the drinks, the atmosphere, the sauces...chef's kiss to the entire staff!

Chalmers R.

Yelp
If I could leave Zero stars I would. service is atrocious, kitchen is slow, food is overpriced, and the waitstaff member (Nick) was rude, ignored us, and complained about tip. I do not recommend this location to anyone. Following experience I reached out to manager and the resolve wasn't great. No apologies or offers to make it right. Do yourself a favor and get BBQ and drinks anywhere else
google avatar

Rachel H.

Yelp
We've always been a fan of the Home Team in Charleston and were so excited Greenville now has one. The set up of the center Home Team is in is one of the best parts of it - they seem to have been packed for dinner ever since they opened and are right across from a new brewery, Double Stamped Brewery (which is awesome). Having a place to go and have a beer while on the waitlist definitely makes it more bearable! We both got the pulled pork plates and it was delicious. They have numerous sauces to pick from and the sides were yummy. The waitress got one of our sides wrong but was super quick to correct it! We had the large Gamechangers which were a decent amount of drink for the price. All in all, the food is good, but we do think the portions are a little small for the price.
google avatar

Michele P.

Yelp
We have been here a few times. Everything we had was great. The service was good and very knowledgeable of the menu items. I recommend this place for sure if you are in the mood for good barbecue. We will go back.

Walter F.

Yelp
Good food. Fast service. Accommodating. Atmosphere was ok, knowledgeable about the menu.
google avatar

Bethe C.

Yelp
It was official opening day so I understand some mistakes- had to ask for our drinks twice, got the wrong food item so I am not holding that against them. We got a brisket taco, pork slider (was a mistake), brisket slider and a dozen wings- prices are high for the quantity of food you get- the portions are small. The wings were delicious- but honestly 12 little wings for $17, I expected larger wings or at least celery and carrots. I will try it again in a few weeks, but now I know I need to order more food to leave full.
google avatar

Sarah S.

Yelp
Finally, so good BBQ close to home. There was a little bit of a wait, but the waiting area outside was comfortable. The host and server were both super outgoing and friendly. My husband got the burger which was huge and delicious; daughter got the taco that was in the small side for the price, and I had the burnt end platter. We shared the sides of Mac and cheese and tots. Mac was so yummy! I took a star off because my burnt ends weren't all the same temperature and the tiny taco was a little overpriced. We do plan on going back though. Don't forget to try the frozen Irish coffee to finish off the meal.

JD W.

Yelp
I had the beef brisket sandwich with a side of slaw. Very tasty and tender sandwich however the slaw really lacked flavor. Not sure I would go back. Just a little over priced for what I got.
google avatar

Alisan F.

Yelp
Home Team BBQ has turned into go to spot for us. It's very loud in the main dining area, but they do have an enclosed patio area that's a bit quieter. Fiery Ron's Burger is; by far, my favorite thing here and their bar is great! I have brought out-of-town family here and I recommend this place to friends often as well.
