Google
Place to get fresh halal meat. Special shout out to David who on request had the chicken cut and clean!! Meat was fresh and clean!!

Google
When entering you will notice how small it is. There is barely any room to stand let alone sit and eat. There are a few tables but you will need more than luck to find it not taken already. The service was a bit slow. It took over 15min for my order despite me being the only one in the restaurant. As for the food, the only downside I would say was that the bun of my burger was cold. I'm assuming that they warmed up the bun right when I made the order and it cooled down by the time I was served. The burgers are really tasteful. In my opinion they are the perfect size, not to big to make it difficult to eat and not to small to leave you hungry afterwards. Overall the quality of the food was good, and I most likely will be going back on off hours to avoid the wait. - Halal Bites

Google
I purchased an organic chicken from Honest Chops, expecting premium quality for the price I paid. To my disappointment, the chicken was cut into very large chunks, which required additional preparation on my part. To make matters worse, I found remnants of the red wiggler worm skin in the meat. As someone who already struggles with consuming meat, this experience was particularly off-putting. They definitely need to improve their cleaning standards.🤢🤢🤢🤢🤮

Google
A good place to buy Halal meat. The timings change based on the Summers and Winters. Please make sure to call ahead and check. Also my advice would be to select cuts and the type of meat and place the order online. They often run out of red lean meat options from what I have seen. The butcher is nice and kind and very professional. I wish they had Turkey options besides thanksgiving.

Love this place!!! Very high quality meats and the guys behind the counter have beautiful manners and excellent service.

We have been customers here for years. Honest Chops is a blessing to the neighborhood in many ways. Good Health and longevity to the business and those who work there and support them

Google
AVOID THEIR DELIVERY SERVICE. Ordered $100+ of meat which never got delivered. This was with their delivery company Nash which does not have a customer facing service department. Emailed and called the company and after 4 days was told to generically call the delivery company as if I had ordered through Mercato or some other customer chosen delivery provider. Frankly disappointed with their lack of responsibility or customer service. I’m a repeat customer and order large quantities of meat so don’t understand the lack of urgency to assist.

Google
Worst customer service ever. I made an order last week, they called my husband's to deliver it. Unfortunately, they couldn't reach him, so they took back the order. Since then, I emailed them four times to fix the matter, and to provide another phone number, and my willingness to pay for the redelivery charges. No one replied back, also I tried calling, the same no one answered, today the butcher answered but he's not in charge of the customer communications. I learned my lesson, never again.

Tiani J.

Yelp
Best place to buy halal meat. Good service, selection, and quality. Highly recommended!

Yelp
Insurmountable level of unprofessionalism. I placed an order for delivery on Wednesday with a scheduled delivery for Friday between 12 and 3. Called at 12 to confirm, delivery guy still hadn't picked it up. Same at 1:30 and again at 2:30. Was told, "he doesn't work for us, what can we do?" Now, at 10 minutes to 3, the shop tells me he picked it up and can make the delivery in 10 minutes (30 blocks uptown and 4 crosstown). If you've ever been to Manhattan, you know that's total BS. When I expressed my dissatisfaction (yes, NYC style) the guy at the shop says they can't do anything, this is the way it is, and it will get to me when it gets to me. This is NOT customer service. This isn't even service. This is some troglodyte who doesn't give a sh*t about his customers. Never, never, never, again.

Yelp
The best meats the city can offer at a reasonable price Call ahead of time to make sure they have what you're looking for because they sell out quick

Yelp
3 things about this place make me want to never come back. 1) There are hundreds of large black flies outside their entrance. I literally felt like Moses parting the red sea of black flies....plus it's in the ~50s today and windy, so it is not like it could be blamed on normal NYC hot summer trash (lol)? 2) I order beef bones, beef shank, short ribs, and chicken breasts. Total? Over $100! I think to myself...well, I've heard their meat is good, so it is probably worth the price... 3) I get home and open the bags. The meat is COVERED in hair. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt here and HOPING the hair is cow hair that didnt fully get skinned off. But honestly...it looks like it got dropped and rolled around in one of the butcher guy's hair after a haircut. I uploaded a pic, but I wish I could upload a video to show the full 360 disgustingness. This meat has more hair than Jeff Bezos. I'm so grossed out and I feel like a dummy for paying $100 to get dirty hairy meat from a fly-infested hole in the wall.

Joviel K.

Yelp
I love this place. If you only eat typical factory farmed meats from the grocery store than do yourself a favor and come here. A god sent place for those who respect their animals (yes you can eat meat and respect it too!). I also like that they sell beef liver and lamb liver. Their ground beef is fantastic, great color and flavor. Stew meat is great and they cut it for you how you like. Prices are decent for what you get. This meat is the some of the best you can get without buying directly from a farm. One of the best shops in the city.

Jeffrey K.

Yelp
I web order through Mercato and every Honest Chops order has been of the highest quality. Highly recommended

Anna L.

Yelp
The meat is on the expensive side, but it is quality halal meat. They also sell sausages, but I wasn't too fond of the flavors. They also sell cooked burgers at another location. Make sure to call in your order or reserve your order in advance online. They can sell out in the afternoon.

Ali D.

Yelp
You can taste the quality, wish they sold Dry Aged as well but non the less great quality, with providence, and delivery available

Disha F.

Yelp
We went and at at honest chops a few days ago. I ordered the classic burger and the truffle fries. The burger was really good. It had a good balance of meat and flavor. The fries tasted very fresh and soft. Loved it!!! I would go back.... the burger was so good! The water bottles are very cute too, it's in blue glass bottles. My brother go the chicken burger and he was very satisfied as well!!! Overall good experience with halal burgers.

Sufiya B.

Yelp
Never felt better about eating a burger. Halal, good quality meat can be hard to come by. Very prompt service and a simple no-nonsense menu. I ordered the classic which was very satisfying and filling.

Maryam A.

Yelp
Quality meat and prompt service! Whether you eat halal or not, you will be more than pleased at how your food turns out because fresh, well handled meat does make a big difference!.. I called and placed an order over the phone at around 11 am and picked it up around 4:30 pm. It was packaged well and the meat had no gunk on it, it was clean and handled with expertise, I had chicken 5 pounds (breast and thigh) cut into 5 pieces per set and they did it well! Some haphazardly cut, but they know what they are doing. I did get beef as well, The meat was tender when cooked and I am very pleased. One thing I wish they had was goat, hopefully one day.

Catfish H.

Yelp
Small local butcher shop below street level. It is very expensive (sausage was $16 a pound, filet was $36 a pound) but you are paying for the location and the vibe. Worth a try.

Liana L.

Yelp
I'm glad that I went to Aaron's Kosher Gourmet recently because I couldn't help compare it to Honest Chops, which was superior in every way: price, location, quality, ambiance and customer service. I wasn't yelping very much at that time in my life, so I totally forgot about this. I came here to get a cut of filet mignon to make a beef wellington for my boyfriend's roommate, who eats Halal. For the other two filet mignons, I went to Whole Food's - so I had a direct comparison! Unfortunately, since it's been so long, I literally do not remember whether Honest Chops was cheaper or not, but I do remember that flavor-wise, the filet mignon here was significantly better. So the next day I asked Raymond to pick up another filet mignon from here so that I could make beef wellington for my Chinese mom who does not eat Halal. The customer service was friendly, helpful and courteous (basically the opposite of Aaron's Kosher Gourmet in Forest Hills). I would definitely come back next time I need to make Halal food, and for any filet mignon needs.

Bar M.

Yelp
Great little butcher shop. It's definitely in an old building and you have to go down a short set of not too even steps to get to the door. But it's very clean. They are small so they do not have everything and anything, but they have the most likely items. The service is really friendly & helpful. Ask as many questions as you have and they will answer them and even make helpful suggestions. Quality of the meats is excellent!

Tasnia T.

Yelp
My best friend and I have recently started coming here to buy fresh, organic halal meat. We have tried so many other butcher shops, but because the inferior meat quality does not satiate our appetites, we decided to give this butchery a go. I must say, this butchery has exceeded our high expectations. The quality of the meat is remarkable. You can definitely taste the difference in this meat versus meat from other butcheries. For the longest time, we have enjoyed Turkish, Afghan and South Asian cuisine, but now we are forced to learn recipes because the meat, in all honesty *no pun intended* must be from HONEST chops.

Alie I.

Yelp
Honest Chops has the highest-quality meat you can buy. This meat isn't "just" grass-fed, but also grass finished which makes a huge difference in the flavor. No soy or corn used here. The prices are less expensive than what you find at local grocery stores too, including Key Foods which is only a few blocks away. The guys who work here are super friendly and helpful. I will never buy or eat conventionally grown meat ever again. It's not worth it in terms of your long-term health and taste wise too. Nothing compares to the meat offered here at Honest Chops!!

Katey G.

Yelp
Watching Food Inc. didn't turn me into a vegetarian, but it certainly had me thinking about where my beef was coming from. I recently moved to East Village, and Associated Supermarket (a less than desireable option) was seemingly the only choice for buying fresh meat. As a butcher rookie, I decided to turn to Yelp to find a conscious and reliable local butcher. I found Honest Chops only 5 blocks from my apartment and bookmarked it. Some days later, I was in the mood for a steak and knew just where to turn. I arrived on a Saturday around 6pm, and it was still busy inside. At first sight, they had a nice selection of homemade sausages, short rib patties, and whole chickens. I also discovered it is a halal butcher, so they don't carry any pork product. I wanted to pick up two 8oz filets for my friend and myself. A very nice employee came over to assist me, as I noticed they had no filet left in the refrigerated display. Feeling a little disappointed, I was about to opt for a different cut. He then told me, "Oh no problem. We have more in the fridge." He disappeared for about five minutes, and then suddenly I saw him emerging from the fridge carrying an entire cow carcass. The WHOLE cow. How many tiny butcher shops in the East Village do you know that process whole cows? He proceeded to butcher the carcass to retrieve my filet. It took him about 10 minutes, but I just watched in fascination. He finally finished and arrived back with the filet and sliced me two 8oz cuts. The gentleman that was helping me could have easily suggested I try a different cut, but instead went through all of that effort just for my pound of filet. Not only was this excellent customer service, but I also appreciate that they make the effort to process the entire cow. You can even trace your meat back to the original animal. It doesn't get much more transparent than that.

Sara B.

Yelp
Walked in on a weekday and bought a nice chicken. Took a while since maybe only two people working and deliveries were in progress. Anyway- chicken was delicious :)

Omer M.

Yelp
I am updating my review to reflect the actual experience. Purchased many items (see my last review). When it was time to cook they didn't come out as flavorful as expected. The kabobs turned out dry. The lamb was nothing special. The only worthy items were their brisket blend hamburger patties. I really wanted this place to impress me. Unfortunately the end product just did not live up to expectations. Not worth the trip into the city.

George C.

Yelp
$3 short rib brisket burgers are one of the best things you can pick up from a butcher shop in the area and prepare yourself quickly and easily and have it taste good. Staffers are nice, but don't greet you if they're busy. PS opens @ 2 Fridays. 3xShort Rib Brisket Burger $9.00

Otto H.

Yelp
I placed an order for delivery last Sunday and still have not gotten my order. Noone is responding to emails and when I call the store the gentleman that answers told me he can't help me and I have to continue to email. BUYER BEWARE!

Aseah K.

Yelp
I've been going here a lot actually because the price is decent and it's near campus. Service is also amazing, so please tip well if you can. I've tried the classic and the veggie burger. Both were made very well and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I highly recommend going here instead of any of the chains nearby. Please support your local businesses, as it would be such a loss to lose this place.

Nida V.

Yelp
So glad there is a halal, organic butchery within walking distance! I eat exclusively halal meat and at the same time want to ensure that it is sourced consciously. The guys working there are nice, and will chop the meat in strips, cubes to your liking. Also, if you call a bit in advance, they'll have it ready for you - no waiting = massive plus for me. My mom came over once and cooked some chicken I had picked up from here. She instantly noticed and commented on the freshness and quality. Yes, it might be a little pricier, but totally worth it in my opinion. And if you're in a rut for dinner and want to switch it up, get some of their preseasoned meats and sausages, they are yum!

Ashot S.

Yelp
Good quality meat , friendly staff and great choices but if you looking for fancy words and service it's not your place & simplicity is the best ! So far I like it and planning to continue shopping there and I believe what it's worth to try.

Ahmad F.

Salimah M.

Yelp
Great quality halal meat in the city. I was skeptical at first but was pleasantly surprised. Bought a lot of lamb from them recently and they were very helpful and were wonderful to work with and really knowledgeable too.

Mina U.

Yelp
This was a very disappointing experience. After reading about this place, I was only too excited to give it a try, as there are very few halal butchers near my office, and none have received the level of attention of honest chops. So anyway, I get there and the pickings are slim, but the butcher assures me they have plenty of lamb in the back (freezer I assume). He brings out more lamb shoulder and I head home with a smile. Only to get home and find out that of my pound and a half of lamb, at least 60% was bones. It must have been one of the skinniest lambs on the farm. I really struggled to find the meat in my bag, which was upsetting considering how much i had purchased. But i figured the taste may make up for what I lacked in quantity. Not at all! The meat itself, when I did find a piece, was nothing to write home about, very mediocre. Did not smell or taste like the fresh meat I get from my local butcher. Was barely up to Whole Foods' standard; and I think their meat is from New Zealand or something. Needless to say, I will not be going back to honest chops.

New Y.

Yelp
This is a great place to get all your organic meat needs. Whether its for your weekly meat shopping or if your planning a bbq, this is the best place to come. Fresh, healthy organic lamb, chicken and beef can be found here. Please call ahed to see if your items are available. The hardest thing to get here is beef liver because they sell out quick so call ahed.

Suhaib W.

Yelp
By far the cleanest, highest quality halal beef and chicken I've ever had. The staff is helpful; the more you ask, the better answers they give. This is my go to spot for sacred beef and chicken.

Ashkan A.

Yelp
The reason I'm giving them a 2 star rating is that the butcher does not wear a mask while serving costumers indoors which during a pandemic is both incredibly irresponsible and very hypocritical since they have a 'no mask no entry sign' on the door. The meat is good but not worth the risk.

Ellen L.

Yelp
I had to buy a filet mignon for a fancy family dinner and found Honest Chops on Yelp. They were very friendly and helpful when I called. The meat was absolutely perfect and my husband - the chef - was very pleased.

Nabeel S.

Yelp
Great place though the price is a tad bit high. The staff is very courteous and the meat quality is very very good. I've bought their ribs, rib eye steak, boneless leg and thigh chicken, and ground chicken and all of the meat gas been high quality. They cut things as you request and that's very helpful especially since the butchers seem knowledgeable about cuts and can provide guidance.

Humayra M.

Yelp
I got a halal turkey from here for thanksgiving - it was a great experience. The turkey smelled fresh and it cooked very well. In addition - for every turkey bought, another was donated to a family in need. Everyone wins!

Sumit B.

Yelp
This is spot my for fresh meat. Been coming here for about a year and have not been disappointed once. The meat here is fairly priced and tastes amazing. The only downside is you notice how poor the quality of steak/meat is outside of this establishment. I used to enjoy going out to eat, but now, I don't because I can actually taste the difference. Oh well. Personal favorites: 80% ground beef. Skirt steak. Filet. The sausages are pretty tasty too.

Rachel B.

Yelp
I love this place. Great quality meat and you can taste the difference vs anything you're used to in the store. I find that the ground beef is exceptionally tasty as well as their different sausages. Beef/lamb are grass fed, organic hormone free, which is important to us. They are priced very well for the quality. We only buy our meat here and highly recommend it. The guys working there are super awesome and friendly too.

Aziza B.

Yelp
Let me start by saying I am French Moroccan. Since I live in America, I became a vegetarian. Why? Because meat here makes me sick. Literally. So I stopped eating meat. Literally. But my husband is still a carnivore. So I needed to find a place for him. To get him good quality, clean, honest, fresh meat. And I did find this place: Honest chops. Since that day, we are not going anywhere else. Even if it's not close from where we live, even it's not cheap (not expensive either), we wouldn't go anywhere else. And guess what?! I reintroduce meat in my diet since its Ramadan, so I needed this extra protein. I feel wonderful! Did I tell you that they where really nice in the shop?! Awesome guys. I highly recommend!

Raza H.

Yelp
The cliff notes: 1. The meat is going to be the freshest and best tasting you have ever had 2. You are going to want to try everything, so it's best to get something new each time So I found Honest Chops while living in the East Village and decided to try it out. Yes, the meat is a little bit more expensive than your traditional shop or grocer, but the meat is fresh, lean, and outstanding in it's flavor. 110% worth the price. I have had both the beef and the chicken, and both were outstanding. The staff is very friendly, and if you ask them for help and/or recommendations, they are always willing to offer advice.

Fatima A.

Yelp
I used to love them a year a go , ppl get the order late mine never came at all ! I send email try to call ! Nothing .. It's not even 1star they deserve no star at all .

William D W.

Yelp
If you're looking for poor quality halāl meat that tastes like stale beef-jerkey, this is not your spot. If you're looking for that fresh, sacred lamb, beef or chicken that melts in your mouth like M&Ms on a hot August day with coffee in your mouth, then this place is for you. Ain't nothing like it; ain't nothing better.

Nida C.

Yelp
I love ordering from Honest Chops. I had a poor experience buying halal meat while in Austin, and switched to buying organic meat from grocery stores. When I moved to New York, it was difficult to find quality meat sources. I used to trek over to Whole Foods and stand in long lines to buy expensive organic meat. I eagerly awaited the Honest Chops opening. I placed my first order in June 2014. I ordered $100 worth of meat to take advantage of the free shipping. When it arrived, the raw meat was noticably high quality. On cooking, there is no "chicken" or "beef" taste, meaning the meat is very fresh and high quality. Since then, I'm a regular customer. I order $100 meat every two months to cook for two people 2-3 times a week. The price is amazing - half the cost I was paying at Whole Foods, but with the same quality and taste (if not better). I no longer view cooking preparation as a burden, my cooking-related stress level has decreased, and I cook more often. I'm so glad to have halal meat and to be able to share my cooking with zabihah-eaters. I order online and in the notes, I ask Honest Chops to cut the chicken breast I order into 2 inch cubes, and to package all of my meat in 1-lb bags. This saves me a lot of time and hastle in preparing the meat into individual packets. When it arrives, I simply stick it in the freezer, ready to thaw in the amounts I need. I recently started ordering the chicken cutlets, which are amazing for lebanese grilled chicken salads. I marinate the meat on arrival and freeze in 1.5 pound bags for use throughout the month. I really appreciate the delivery service in Manhattan. It's always on time, and the staff at Honest Chops are nice people. One time, my delivery arrived, but my doorbell didn't work and they couldn't get a hold of me by phone. They still swung by a couple of hours later just to make sure I got my delivery that day. Another time, I accidentally locked myself out of my apartment when I went to grab my delivery, and the delivery person let me use their cellphone to call a friend. I'm going to awkwardly end my review on that note.

Saadia T.

Yelp
I love this place. Fabulous quality meats, locally sourced and beautifully butchered according to your needs. I have been buying my chicken, lamb and beef exclusively from here for the last 2 years.

Mela R.

Yelp
I mean who doesn't want CLEAN MEAT, FRESH MEAT, AND DID I SAY " CLEAN MEAT" .. The price is high, but lets face it, anything this clean, pure and Honest doesn't come cheap, and i am willing to spend more so that me and my family can eat clean meat, it's the least i can do since all the other food in my fridge is prob packed with GMO's and preservatives. Purchased a Whole Chicken (they chopped it for me, asked how i wanted it chopped, and if i wanted skin on and off, that was nice), Skirt steaks and Lamb shoulder chops.. all was very tasty and fresh, my favorite was the Lamb & Beef, very juicy and not chewy like in super markets. OVERALL, I will be going back.... And to Honest Chops, I hope you business continues to grow and with that your prices drop lol, Thank you!!

Tina S.

Yelp
This place is so great - local, humane, organic food growers! You can really taste the difference compared to supermarket meat, even Whole Foods or other organic retailers. And the prices are very fair. Even when I make the most basic roasted chicken recipes, they taste restaurant-quality. Hardly need to add other ingredients. Staff is also kind and will make cuts to order, can also give you some cooking tips if you're unfamiliar with a cut.

vantermiantor h.

Yelp
Their meat is really, really expensive but its since its near impossible to get even half decent halal steaks, I buy from them. I used to get delivery because, for the price, you should hope they do something special for the price. But with the new postmates delivery system (average an average order of mine, which runs around 200, would results in a 30 delivery fee), they are just not worth it. Anyone who doesnt care about halal, I would suggest going to some other meat shop. I am sure you will get a better price-quality combination.

Nisarga M.

Yelp
Came here after a friend suggested since I was on the lookout for organic, hormone free and halal meat. The service was very efficient and friendly. The guy at the counter was able to cut the chicken in small pieces and combined the items I want. The chicken tasted great ! Was of excellent quality. Didn't try the other meat but it looked fresh, I bet it tastes great too!

Sara Y.

Yelp
Excellent products and very friendly staff. I buy my meat exclusively from here because there is absolutely no reason to switch butcher. I really recommend;)

Michael G.

Yelp
I'm new in NY and Honest Chops is the first butcher that I tried, first for the grass fed because I follow the Paleo Diet, second for the halal (I'm not muslim but I find this hand-slaughter practice more respectful and correct than the rest of options), and third is near my home. After my first visit, and tasted their meat, definitely is My butcher. Professional, respectful and polite, clean, and the meat is superb, you feel the naturalness from the cooking to the eating. Also do home delivery, then, you have not excuse for not give it a try, if you are in search of a real natural meat, do it, you will be enthusiastic.

Jakub W.

Yelp
Was look asking for a butcher at 7pm, and really not that many open, but these guys were. The place is a little different on the outside as you walk down stairs to get there, and then the initial view is a bit sparse, but they definitely more than make it up in the taste. Ordered two meats in the first go: shank which ultimately was ok how it was made, and definitely would do it differently next time as I know what it's good for... And then had the bone in rib eye. This, on a cast iron pan, on a gas stove was almost as good as you'd get in a high end steakhouse. Terrific cut, great quality meat, the real deal ... And now I have my butcher (and a quick citibike down 2nd to beat)!

Laurie H.

Yelp
LOVE this place! Saw that a friend Instagrammed a picture of the storefront and was intrigued, so when I found myself needing some steak today, I called and asked him where the store was. I'm so glad I did! The store was clean and charming and Anas, who was behind the counter, was so patient and so helpful. They even offered to vacuum-pack one of the meats for us so that it'd last a little bit longer in our fridge. The prices were very reasonable and they had a special of ~$3.5 for a pound of chicken wings. If you value quality, grass-fed meats, this is definitely the place to go! We've always had trouble finding good meats in the East Village and usually resort to Trader Joe's or Associated Supermarket for a quick, unsatisfying fix, so I'm really glad Honest Chops opened in the East Village 3 week ago. It's definitely a welcome addition to the neighborhood and I foresee myself stopping by often for chicken wings and steaks!

Bilal A.

Yelp
I first came here about a month ago after hearing about it through word of mouth. I made the trip all the way from Brooklyn via train. I was very pleased with my decision. The gentleman at the register was very friendly. He had patience and explained to me what some things were, when I had questions. I ended up buying beef short ribs, burgers, chicken patties (can't remember the actual name). I came in expecting to spend more money than I did, so that's always a plus! I explained to the cashier that I've been looking for ground lamb since I moved to NY 4 years ago but haven't been able to find any. He said they would be getting some soon! Hopefully he holds true to this when I return.
