Honeychild’s Sweet Creams Opens In the Heights | Eater Houston

"Located inside M-K-T Heights at 600 N. Shepherd, #450, this Houston-based custard brand opened its first brick-and-mortar shop in a light-filled, design-forward space with terrazzo accents, an open kitchen overlooking the White Oak Trail, and a floor decorated with half-moon shapes; customers can sit at a long communal table or at bar seating looking into the kitchen. Kathleen Morgan, who started the business in 2014, emphasizes sourcing ingredients from local farms and makers such as Mill-King Creamery, Plant It Forward, PPF Farming Co., and Lightsey Farms, and the shop—designed by architect Nicole Barrios and interior designer Adriana Oxford—highlights that local approach. Treats include warm peach cobbler topped with custard, cookies, and granola, and there are 16 daily scoops with seasonal flavors like buttermilk pie, Texas sheet cake, vegan pear butter, orange Dreamsicle, sweet potato, and Mustang grape sorbet; options include a honey cornmeal waffle cone, an ice cream sandwich, or a pint to go. Hours are Tuesday–Wednesday 11 a.m.–9 p.m., Thursday–Friday 11 a.m.–10 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.–10 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m.–6 p.m." - Adele Chapin

This is one of those places that just feels special the moment you walk in. 🤍 Kathleen, the owner and founder, is such a lovely soul. You can truly feel the passion and warmth she has for what she’s built. She encourages you to try literally every flavor before deciding, which makes the whole experience so fun and welcoming…especially if you’re indecisive like us! It’s the perfect little spot at MKT, especially after an evening walk on the trail. We love stopping by, sitting down, and just relaxing with something sweet in hand. Every ice cream flavor we’ve tried has been amazing, but their chocolate chip cookies and brownies are absolutely spectacular. And their seasonal hot chocolate? We genuinely wait for winter just for that. Hands down the BEST hot chocolate in Houston… nothing else compares. The space itself is so aesthetic and thoughtfully designed … perfect for cute Instagram pictures but also cozy enough to just enjoy the moment. And the prices are very, very reasonable for the quality you’re getting. If you’re in Houston, this place is a must-visit. Supporting small businesses like this just feels good. 🍦✨

Google
This has to be one of the best ice creams I’ve ever had. The base to every single flavor is unique and creamy, the consistency is perfect, and the seasonal flavors are absolutely exquisite. Each bite is an explosion of flavors that works so well. I swear that zucchini cake is the best flavor I’ve ever had. Almost each week they have a new flavor, and their staple flavors are delicious as well. Funfetti, black chocolate, cookies and cream. They even make the “basic” flavors, the best I’ve ever had. And a special thank you to John who always helps us and provides excellent service

Robin B.

Google
Amazing ice cream flavors made in house! Their specialty /rotating flavors are seasonal and unique - they are often my favorite tastes and we get them at least monthly. When they have baked goods available as a pop up or special occasion- get them! We got the King Cake this week and it is delicious.

Kelsey

Google
I visit here regularly and have never once been disappointed. I love trying all the new rotating flavors. There are also some reliable regular flavors as well if you’re not feeling adventurous, however I’m always so impressed by the unique recipes and how tasty they are! Great to access from the walking trail, one of my favorite places to visit in Houston!

Bianca Allen B.

Google
They’ve made my top 3 ice cream spots in Houston. the ice cream is VERY creamy ! And their seasonal flavors this fall have been great can’t wait for next season .

Victoria L.

Google
Cute and modern ice cream shop to get homemade and unique flavors! The peppered strawberry was my favorite. The ice cream flight is a really good deal, five flavors for $12! They also have an open kitchen where you can watch them make the ice cream.

Bella G.

Google
Cute in theory but the ice cream was gross. The guy working recommended the peanut butter trail mix and it was terrible. Super weird combination of granola and nuts that did not taste good together. We were not offered any samples, and it’s very expensive for a tiny scoop. The sad plant next to us in the seating area was almost dead.

Google
ORIGINAL 🍦🍦🍦 SMOOTH 🍦🍦🍦 KID FRIENDLY The ice cream here is all made in-house, and if I remember correctly, all but one flavor is made of custard. That means that it's a bit more egg-heavy. I tried two different flavors, and both were smooth, original, and creamy. I was there with a friend and her three kids, and they really enjoyed the whole experience. The decor inside is pretty neat. They have two huge tables with long benches, so it's more like a shared space, and they also have some bar-style seating. They have a small park in front of the shop so the kids can run around and burn off some of that sugar. I really enjoyed my ice cream and would like to go back to try some of the more popular flavors. Because I was there at the beginning of the week, they had run out over the weekend. They said it gets pretty crowded on the weekends.

McKenzie F.

Yelp
Easily the best icecream in Houston! They make all their ice creams in house, using local and real ingredients (no dyes!). They have fun seasonal flavors and the staff is always very nice. Their toasted marshmallow icecream is the best icecream I've had in my life!

Yelp
Honey Child's Sweet Cream Ice Cream is an absolute gem. I had the black chocolate cone--rich, smooth, and insanely flavorful--and my son had the cookies and cream cone, which he devoured in record time. You can genuinely taste that the ice cream is homemade; it's creamy, perfectly balanced, and not overly sweet. The service takes it to the next level. The gentleman working was incredibly kind and let us sample any flavors we wanted before choosing, which made the experience feel welcoming and personal. If you're looking for high-quality ice cream with heart, this is the spot. We'll definitely be back--probably sooner than we should.

Yelp
Great place for ice cream at MKT! I believe they make their ice cream fresh and have seasonal flavors. Staff always friendly and offer free samples. I enjoy their S'mores ice cream the most. They have seating indoors and a few smaller tables outside.
google avatar

Yelp
This was conveniently located off the new shopping center on Shepherd, so there's plenty of parking and plenty of shopping to do in the area. We had to stop in for a sweet treat after a late lunch nearby. This little coffee shop, despite its quaintness, was loaded with so many different flavors and plenty of seating. The ladies at the front were super nice and let us try a few flavors before we got our pic. I had the Texas sheet cake and it was absolutely amazing! Very creamy and not too sweet, just right. They also had a sourdough chocolate chip cookie, which could've had a little bit more chocolate chips in it, but overall a good place to stop for a sweet treat.
google avatar

Kathy H.

Yelp
Located in M-K-T. Cute location and ambiance. They have a good variety of flavors. They do change their flavors occasionally, by the season, but do keep their regulars around. I enjoy sitting outside when it is warm and they have their garage like door open. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable.
google avatar

Yelp
We came in at around 5:30-ish-6 PM. Parking was a bit annoying since it's MKT, but nothing crazy. It's in a really nice spot near the boardwalk on the side facing the park so you could see the dogs and people walking/running outside. It was sunny outside so it was just beautiful. The place inside has an open atmosphere and the decor is cute. There was a good amount of seating inside and outside the shop also. I got the standard-size ice cream (two different flavored half-scoops) in one of blue corn waffle cones. I chose the Cookies n' Cream and the Buttermilk Pie. We tried a bunch of flavors before we ordered and all of them were really good. The ice cream is good quality and creamy, and the waffle cone is crispy and tastes a bit like Kix cereal. So good!
google avatar

Yelp
Super good ice cream place!! Some of their flavors are limited based on what fruit or food item is fresh that season which is great. We had a cup of the Mexican vanilla and the Texas sheet cake. The vanilla was our favorite!!! We stopped by after dinner at another spot in the MKT and it was not super busy. The server was quick and nice! It's a small spot but there was plenty of available seats at the evening time we went. Parking of course is part of the MKT. Definitely a cute little spot for dessert after dinner.

Yelp
My go to favorite ice cream spot - every time I come to the city for ice cream, this is my go to spot. I was so sad that the toasted marshmallow flavor hasn't came back in so long. That was the first flavor that i had from here and i will forever remember that flavor. I hope y'all can bring it back one day. I really like coming here because the flavor is fresh and unique. The service is always great. The ambiance is great, especially it's a good date spot.

Yelp
Was in the area with my friend to try a cafe but decided to pick up some ice cream since there was a long line. Happy to find that they offered a lot of flavors mostly pie flavors like apple and buttermilk. I had a scoop of the pecan and the apple. They both had good flavors but I felt that the ice cream was not as creamy as some of the better ones in town. Definitely a place to try if you like pies. They do have a good amount of seating just for an ice cream place.
google avatar

Bryan V.

Yelp
My FAVORITE mint chocolate ice cream in the city! The mint is so fresh it's like you're eating a mojito in ice cream form. The chocolate is delicious as well of course. The shop is in MKT square which is perfect for hanging out and walking around the trails. The store and its bathroom are clean and nicely decorated!
google avatar

Emily S.

Yelp
Yummy ice cream, great service, very family friendly. Open air lay out. Try the blue corn cone!
google avatar

Yelp
My favorite past time is trying ice cream shops in the city. I stumbled upon honeychild's and I must say I will be back! They had an ample amount of flavors which were all super delicious! The employees were super excited and eager but also patient with me when it came to asking & trying different flavors. There wasn't a line when I got there , but soon after a line quickly flowed out the door. I opted for the vanilla and pecan praline and I liked it a lot. Can't wait to try this place again
google avatar

Michelle O.

Yelp
The black chocolate (mini scoop) was pretty good. It had a creamy dark chocolate flavor without the tartness or bitterness that some dark chocolates have. There were other unique flavors like grapefruit and rosemary that are seasonal and fun to try.
google avatar

Tiffany L.

Yelp
Honeychild's Sweet Creams is such a charming little spot--both the interior and outdoor space are super cute. There's seating right outside the shop and also nearby where you can just relax and enjoy your treat. Great place to sit back on a nice day and watch dogs trot by or kids running around. Definitely family-friendly without feeling chaotic. I can't totally remember all the flavors I tried, but the strawberry one was easily my favorite--light, fruity, and really refreshing. I also got one that had orange cookie and some herb (maybe thyme or rosemary?)--it was decent, but not as much of a standout as the strawberry. Appreciate that they have traditional and creative flavors that change seasonally. This is a perfect spot for a mid-day break or post-lunch treat if you're in the area.

Yelp
I've been here twice. The first time, I tried the ice cream and remember it being so delicious. This time, I got the hot chocolate because it was SO COLD outside, and it was so worth it. The marshmallows melted perfectly into the hot chocolate, and it was so rich like melted Godiva chocolate with a marshmallowy layer. The service by the woman behind the register was great. She was so sweet and offered us samples of the ice cream too. The actual shop is so cool because there's a glass section where you can look into the worker's area and see the ice cream being scooped, etc.
google avatar

Brittany B.

Yelp
There's not much you can do to have your ice cream spot stand out- true? False! This spot certainly carves out a new category of tasty frozen desserts. I call it artisan ice cream (which is likely already a thing). In addition to a boutique feel and fresh sweet corn cones, they offer tasty combinations, a limited selection of goodies (like cookies), pretty fantastic customer service, and a fresh baked cone scent that makes it impossible not to indulge. Know you'll need to adhere to MTK parking and walk to the location, and there's plenty to explore in the area if you plan to stay awhile...it's worth it!
google avatar

Wendy H.

Yelp
Came in for a sweet treat after sushi. They let us sample a couple flavors until we found our favorite which was really nice! My friend ordered a regular scoop of mexican vanilla ice cream and it was really good! It didn't have that artificial vanilla taste that most ice creams do. I ordered a mini scoop of cookies & cream and I was pleasantly surprised at the size of the mini scoop! Their cookies and cream is fantastic!! It had three different types of cookies mixed in, I loved it! Probably one of my favorites thus far. I'd definitely come back and get it again.
google avatar

Elisabeth H.

Yelp
Deliciousssss. Service is sometimes kinda slow but it's worth the wait! Love supporting local business. It's a great place to eat your ice cream inside or outside. Lots of seating. A little pricey
google avatar

Patrick L.

Yelp
Found this spot just walking around. It's towards the back of the strip center. I felt the space to be inviting and loved how you could watch them making tasteful treats.
google avatar

John B.

Yelp
Best ice cream period, best I've ever had in my entire life. Local ingredients too! Not the crap ingredients that other spots have. Try this place!
google avatar

Libby H.

Yelp
Nestled into the complex of MKT, this place has delicious ice cream! Loved their flavors - I got a pecan and cookies and cream flavor and both were great! The ambiance of this place and MKT in general is great! We came here for a sweet treat after mala Sichuan (spicy food) next door and it was a delight after some spicy food!
google avatar

Hayley F.

Yelp
Honeychild's sells homemade ice creams which are super delicious. They have several classic flavors and seasonal flavors. I had the Meyer lemon, and apple pie flavors (both seasonal flavors) in a cup. The Meyer lemon flavor was a little tart but had a hint of sweetness. The apple pie flavor tasted so apple pie-ish. It was good. I also got a cone of black chocolate, and vanilla flavors (both classic flavors). The black chocolate was not bad. It wasn't dark chocolate with bitter taste. It was sweet but didn't have a strong chocolate taste. The vanilla flavor was ok, not overly sweet. There are plenty of seats available to enjoy the ice cream. The interior is simple, neat, and clean. It is a nice place to hang out with friends over ice cream. The staff was friendly and welcoming, assisting in whichever way he could. I would be back to try other flavors.
google avatar

Cynthia E.

Yelp
Really good ice cream! It was hard to choose because they had some great flavors like Meyer lemon and black chocolate, which tasted like dark chocolate brownies. I had the toasted marshmallow. Very unique flavor. It was super smooth and really reminded me of marshmallows toasted by a fire. I also had the sweet potato. This was also unique as it had nuts and a vanilla flavored marshmallow swirl. Really good! My friend's daughter wanted the waffle cone and they weren't made yet since we got there so early, so she got a fresh cone. They make them fresh every day. The person who worked there was super friendly! Glad to have discovered another great ice cream spot!
google avatar

Brandon T.

Yelp
Absolutely delicious! I really liked their ambience upon entering, the staff also did a great job and were super informative about all the flavors they offered. Honestly you can't go wrong with any of the flavors, bc they are all pretty unique and can hit different cravings. Will come back next time I'm in the area!
google avatar

Texas F.

Yelp
Yummmy like so yummy - delicious options! what else is there to say? I keep getting a notice that I need to write more - so here goes - just get some ice cream, it's like 9000 degrees outside
google avatar

Sandra S.

Yelp
Pretty good ice cream with a few fun flavors. They have a flight option with 5 half scoops. It's worth it as they are generous with their "half scoops". Plus, you get to taste more flavors and it's cheaper. Flight for $12 vs 1 scoop for $5.50. Great deal if you are sharing with friends! My personal favorite was the peach cobbler and peach ring. My friends liked the honey almond. We all agreed that we liked that none of the flavors were overbearingly sweet. There is indoor seating picnic table style or counter side where you can view them making ice cream through the glass.
google avatar

Bradley L.

Yelp
Made a quick stop in for a mini scoop after lunch and I have to say the ice cream is pretty good. It is a little on the sweet side, but the flavors are overall very good... I tried a honey fig and a sweet potato, which for both unique and delicious, but wasn't what I was feeling for today instead, I went back to a solid fallback of cookie dough. Worth a quick stop if you're at MKT. Just a cute little ice cream shop with some standard and unique flavors and a small assortment of baked goods.

Jennifer C.

Yelp
There's this little nice quaint ice cream shop a friend introduced me to. Different flavors weekly. Reminded me of home! More like your youth when your mom would make homemade ice cream and put amazing flavors together and create a memory -- well honey child, that's exactly it! The owner was there there and greeted us the southern way, nice and pleasant. We go at least once a month!
google avatar

Lauren R.

Yelp
We got a flight to share and it was 5 scoops! Plenty. All the flavors were fresh and you could tell homemade. None of them really were my favorite, but they were still pretty good. The shop is very cute and I appreciate their sustainability goals and compostable packaging / utensils. There needs to be a compost bin though and not just trash cans!
google avatar

Shea E.

Yelp
Small place located on the park side of the MKT shopping center. (Walk thru the corridor by Rayban). They offered unique flavored custard, single flavor of soft serve, floats, ice cream sandwhich, and a few other options. Custard was very rich, so alittle went a long ways. I ended up with the black chocolate (dark chocolate with a tarte flavor) and funfetti (vanilla with sprinkles). Quick service. Lots of places to sit outside around the venue or walk around and check out the area.
google avatar

Tutti S.

Yelp
This is a really cute ice cream shop with an interesting variety of ice cream flavors and topings. Cute place to stop in for some yummy desert. I enjoyed sampling a couple of flavors before deciding on what to get. Super friendly and patient employee helping us choose our flavors.
google avatar

Ye J.

Yelp
Located in MKT, plenty of parking around. Came here on a Friday night, the shop was pretty busy but the line moved fairly fast. Got 2 scoops (peach cobbler and banana pudding flavors). Unlike a lot of the store bought ice cream which screams added sugar, this ice cream tasted authentic with just the right amount of sweet. Texture was pretty good as well.
google avatar

Kristina N.

Yelp
Honeychild's Sweet Creams is a handmade frozen custard shop located in MKT area. I've always had a nostalgic taste for frozen custard as I used to get it all the time as a child. Needless to say their vanilla frozen custard lived up to my dream! They have other funky flavors that rotate seasonally but the vanilla has my heart. Their cones are made of sweet corn which I'm not a big fan of. I prefer the brown butter cone from Milk and Sugar. Overall, it's close enough that I can see myself frequenting. There's also a bonus that you can watch them making their frozen custards through the window too.
google avatar

Jason Z.

Yelp
Decent boutique ice cream spot in MKT. The parking is very available at MKT. The store's interior has seating and a see through window into the kitchen. The flavors were a bit bland and basic/non offensive; it'd be good to see some more bold and unique variations to be honest. We got the peach cobbler. Texture was decent but flavor was just a bit bland for me; something fruity and something matcha would be a good choice to add on. $5.5 for the two scoop option.
google avatar

Bijou N.

Yelp
Super delicious ice cream and great waffle cones! The waffle cones are made with sweet corn and the texture is delicious. The flavors are super pure and light. It's a little pricy so expect to shell out around $7 for ice cream and the cone but a great treat. Only taking 1 star off because when I came here the employee broke my cone and then instead of giving me a new one just gave me a cup? The ice cream was spilling everywhere and the cone was clearly broken... just give a new cone lol.

Aaron L.

Yelp
I was excited to try Honeychild's for the first time, but my experience was disappointing before I even got to order. I asked for two flavors in my order, only to be told that they don't allow mixing--apparently, you can only choose one flavor no matter the size or type of order. When I expressed surprise (since this is pretty unusual for an ice cream shop), someone who seemed to be the owner or manager walked by, raised her hand dismissively, and said, "It's my rule." That attitude alone was enough for me to walk out without ordering. It's one thing to have a unique policy, but it's another to double down on it with that kind of response to a first-time customer. With so many great ice cream spots in Houston, I'd rather go somewhere that values both good flavors and good service.
google avatar

Morgan W.

Yelp
Tried this place waiting for some food at a pop up Market. It's a cute ice cream shop with very unique flavors: paper cups and sustainable spoons. The have waffle cones available if you would like. I tried a split scoop with toasted honey and wedding cake on top. Toasted honey was good but the wedding cake was amazing. The almond flavor paired with the blueberries. Chef's kiss! Made a repeat customer out of me.
google avatar

Omar G.

Yelp
Tasting the different flavors was a must. Was not disappointed in any of the flavors. The price was reasonable as they make everything in house. They have a section you can view them making the ice cream. Would recommend after a long day/ hot summer day. I got the peach cobbler and cafe de olla in one scoop. Generous size scoop if you ask.
google avatar

Angeline D.

Yelp
Located in MKT, it's in a prime location of other restaurants. Perfect to stop by for dessert after having a meal close by. Plenty of parking (for now) and not hard to find. They pride themselves on handmade frozen custards and offer approximately 6 flavors. I personally was hoping for some more choices. I opted for two flavors - cookies & creme and pecan praline. I would say the vanilla base of the custard really overpowers any other flavor. Barely any cookies and barely any pecans. Overall, I wouldn't go out of my way to come here again. Perhaps if you're in the area and craving a little sweet treat, you could stop by here.
google avatar

Christine P.

Yelp
I heard about this new ice cream place that opened in the Heights area and was super close to where I live. Of course, I had to try it! I stopped by after grabbing lunch with my boyfriend. It's a little hidden, so after you park, you walk through the alleyway and the ice cream shop is around the corner. They have a lot of unique flavors! They also allow samples. I sampled the Texas Sheet Cake and immediately only wanted to get that flavor haha. I got 2 scoops of it In a cup. It was so delicious! I liked how creamy and soft the ice cream texture itself was. If you like nuts and chocolate, I highly recommend this flavor! I'll have to come back and try other flavors.
google avatar

Judy C.

Yelp
This spot is kind of hidden towards the back of the plaza near the RayBands Store. They had a variety of flavors! Got the cafe ollo (coffee) and the cookies and cream in a cone. The ice cream was very creamy and smooth. I thought the coffee flavor could be stronger but overall good. The cone was nice and crunchy and sweet! I would come back to try other flavors if I was in the area! Parking-within the plaza
google avatar

Samer R.

Yelp
Right here in the Heights, probably one of the best Ice Cream spots in Houston. My top three are the Mexican Vanilla, Black Chocolate, and Cookies N Cream. Great seasonal options too!!! Shout out to the staff for great ice cream and great service!!!
google avatar

Deborah N.

Yelp
Honeychild's Sweet Cream is nestled in the new M-K-T shopping and eateries plaza in the Heights! Cute concept and really great for a refreshing treat on a hot day. I loved the sort of modern seventies concept they have going with the floral print and counter bar to sit and enjoy ice cream. I want to say that you can sit there and watch them make the homemade ice cream in house? Not sure tho. I will say the flavors fall short for me. It was good, but may just not my cup of tea when it comes to flavor and texture. The texture was a bit hard and in my opinion didn't contain a lot of milk, so less creamy and more sticky. They do offer a sweet corn cone which I thought was interesting, and probably their selling point. I ordered the Texas sheet cake and another flavor but can't remember. I would say their flavors aren't very memorable but the attempt is admirable.
google avatar

Amira J.

Yelp
Was really impressed by the sourdough chocolate chip cookies. Definitely the highlight of my visit here. The ice cream was pretty good too. The parking situation isn't the best and it's kind of hard to get to but other than that, this is a nice little hidden gem.
google avatar

Brittney D.

Yelp
I'm particular (or picky, I'm good w either) about my ice cream- it's gotta be worth the cals and the cows milk EVERY time. Honeychild's did not disappoint! Location is peaceful with a few chairs outside to sit and watch joggers. Service was as good as it could be with all the tasters wanting tastes. Bonus points for using gloves to scoop, bc another popular chain insisted it wasn't necessary and I no longer visit that establishment. Wear gloves, just do it. I tried the pecan praline and the black chocolate. They balanced each other well, I think one alone would have been too much or too little in flavor. Unique flavor offerings give this place the edge. Try it out.
google avatar

Danielle O.

Yelp
Delicious and creamy . Flavors change often but if you can get the wedding cake - oh man so good !
google avatar

Higor G.

Yelp
Great flavors made from local ingredients, not too sweet. Waffle cone was 10/10! Friendly service.

Yelp
I really wanted to try this place for a while now because last time we were in MKT it was closed but I to my dismay I wasn't wow-ed by this place. The ice cream was subpar and tasted okay. I'm giving three stars because service was great and the place is nice and aesthetic. This place is in MKT and there are plenty of free parking. Overall, still give it a try maybe I just ordered the wrong flavors.

Yelp
I was passing by and decided to try this spot, because of the variety of flavors and tasteful aesthetic. I ended up ordering the standard size and chose apple pie and toasted milk. Overall, it was okay. I also sampled the mint chip, which tasted too icy, and the black chocolate which wasn't particularly memorable. In the future it would be nice if they could offer a size smaller than standard.
