The Best New Brunches in Denver | Eater Denver

"Dim sum is, of course, a venerable tradition all its own, but in a stateside context, it doubles as brunch, and this successor to Emperor Palace does a bang-up job of it. In addition to all the cart-borne classics — barbecue pork buns, pan-fried leek dumplings, chicken- and mushroom-studded sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf, Chinese sausage–laced turnip cake, and so on — diners should keep their eyes peeled for the shrimp-stuffed green peppers and Phoenix sand buns." - Ruth Tobias

Google
All the food was only okay. Nothing was a stand out and honestly some of it wasn’t even good. It’s not in the photos but the rice roll was too thick and not enough protein inside. The photos are the items that were decent. The top two were fried rice and the radish cake.

We had high expectations coming in. The environment looks real nice. The servers were pleasant. However that’s about all the positives I have to say about this place. The food was meh at best. Some of the dim sum dishes were okay. But a lot others were really bad. I’m not even motivated to take photos of the dishes…. Pretty sure we won’t be back.

We have driven past here for years. Gosh, we missed an opportunity to have a wonderful local restaurant meal more often. Everything sounded so good that we decided to go with small plates so we could try more. The seasame balls were fluffy and perfectly cooked. Or bbq rib steamed buns were also excellent. My dining partner said the duck was the perfect level of game flavor with a sauce. The other 3 plates were good also We thought the side fried rice was kinda greasy and could use some vegetables. Most importantly, i have an allergy (crustaceans), and the server worked with the kitchen to make sure I was safe, including coming back several times to ask about ingredients such as fish sause and mussels. IF YOU HAVE BEEN DRIVING BY, JUST STOP! you won't regret it!

Google
First time here, we found it by Googling dim sum places and happy to find something not too far away as all the Asian places seem to be way south. We came for lunch and tried a variety of dishes. We ended up ordering off the menu as they didn't seem to come by with the cart very much, probably because it was lunch and not super busy. Enjoyed everything we ordered though the ribs weren't quite what we were expecting and the color wasn't the most attractive. All the dumplings we tried were delicious as was the sesame balls. I really liked the turnip cakes though it wasn't a fave of my friends but more for me. Would definitely come back again.

Google
The Dim Sum food is average but I have very high standards because my dad is canto and a retired chef. The beef chow fun was great!! The chicken feet were okay. The taro cake was good. The beef ribs should have been tenderized more. The char siu bao filling was okay, I would have preferred minced pork filling and not ground. There was only one tea flavor option offered to us.

Google
Can you see any difference between my sautéed scallops w osmanthus sauce and rice noodles and the pictures provided? Right it tastes like it looks. Greasy. Also not a single scallop or scallop scrap nor a shred of scallop flavor. There were none. Zero. The only protein in this was eggs. I had one bite and my garbage can enjoyed the rest after a fruitless search for a scallop. No sauce for the shrimp and pork Shumai make it bland as anything you can imagine. Kind of tastes like cat food. The lamb slices w scallion were good and the sesame shrimp was average.

Google
I absolutely love this dim sum place! The food is fantastic, and I always enjoy the Chinese broccoli, noodles, shrimp balls, and pineapple buns. Their chili crunch oil is a favorite of mine too. Plus, the service is great—they’re always prompt about refilling water.

Google
Great. Authentic. We love ordering off the dim sum menu. The fried dumplings are good. My kids like the BBQ steamed pork buns.

Yelp
Great food and great service! Got some dumplings I forgot to take pictures of as well, the steamed bbq pork dumplings were my favorite.

Yelp
bruh the best ha gao i've ever had ngl. hella flavorful. packed with shrimp. great rice wrapping. god damn. siu mai packed with shrimp n pork too. hella juicy asf too. and the wonton wrapper had a nice chew to it which i liked. chicken feet were solid, tastes like the chicken feet from most places. pork ribs were solid as well and pretty standard. the fried vegetable pork dumpling thing they brought out that looked like a ufo was also very good. nice n crispy. and for the shrimp cheung fun, the rice noodle was pretty thick but it was also very soft which offset the thickness. so it was honestly pretty good. the egg tart was soft asf and the crust cup thing was flaky and crispy. not too sweet as well, nice n custardy. their was a slight bit hint of eggyness which is a bit counterboring to what the name is but i dont think it should taste like that. but it was still p good ngl. nah but wtf. the noodles we ordered tho. the meat still had blood in it wtf. so we noticed it before we indulged n told em to bring it back n cook that bih to temp. but they brought it back out n ts was buns ngl. meat was like boot leather. and it was just hella greasy so i wasn't really fw it tbh.oh and i forgot to mention, the lil spinner on the table needa be greased or sum man. when im tryna spin it to get food on the other end of the table, ts j wont spin bruh! had to death grip the spinner with 5000 Gs just to turn it! oh and the bathroom tile was hella loose for some reason bruh. shi scared me! and also the caulk on the urinal in the bathroom is cracking off too. that gotta be a safety hazard fosho. but yeah overall solid place

Yelp
We came here a couple months ago and recently came back. The food has gone down hill and a bit bland since our first visit so not sure what happened. Our latest visit was for an early dinner around 5pm, it was us and about two other tables. The server had to reminded of several times for things like: refill the hot water, our fork dropped and he saw it and just was looking at us until we called him over, waters had to asked to be refilled twice, silly things like that. What we swallowed: *STICKY RICE BBQ DUMPLINGS: These were delicious. *HOT AND SOUP SOUP: A couple months it was delicious but this time around it was bland. *CANTONESE GARLIC PORK LOIN: Hot and tasty *PINEAPPLE SWEET AND SOUR PORK RIBS: These were tasty but super fatty. *SESAME CHICKEN: This was the most consistent thing and delicious. *WALNUT PRAWNS: This was OK. *ORANGE CHICKEN: This was OK. *EGGPLANT GARLIC: This was mushier then most I have had. *MONGOLIAN BEEF *GARLIC PORK RIBS: These were out favorite on the last visit but they no longer had it on their menu. We are on the fence about this place. We were so excited to go back after our first experience was just so delicious but this last visit we were all like 'meh'. Not sure we will come back with so many other Asian restaurants we can explore for mediocre food and service.

Yelp
We come here and usually get the Dim Sum, but they have a regular menu as well. If you come in during lunch time they will have the Dim Sum carts coming around and you can eat immediately - you can also order off the regular menu. For dinner you just order off the Dim Sum menu or the regular menu, no carts are coming around. They have some unique entrees, some I love and others - not so much. The service is always really prompt and good. The ambiance is cool, it's a big place with lots of seating and interesting decor. You'll definitely find things you like here and maybe some things that you don't like. It's fun trying their vast selection and most things I really enjoy. This is one of our favorite places to take people because it's good and different from the usual. We will continue to come back from time to time. Don't forget to combine the vinegar, the soy sauce and the chili oil for a dipping sauce with your entree choices. Recommended and happy eating!

Yelp
This is the only Chinese restaurant that serves dim sum north of downtown Denver. I have been here a couple times for dim sum lunch. The dim sum menu has most of the popular items. In my opinion, their dim sum is one of the best in the Greater Denver area and price is about the same as other places. The service was adequate and prompt both times.

Shay W.

Yelp
Everything I have tried here is delicious! I love the dim sum, but even the regular menu dishes we tried were excellent.
google avatar

Jackie M.

Yelp
The ambience was traditional, the servers were pleasant and smiling, but the food was bland. The dim sum was ok, just not super flavorful. Then one person from our group ordered meatballs that did not come out until after everyone was done eating... they said it takes time to cook them...don't you think they should have been already somewhat cooked for a quicker delivery time? Why wouldn't they have them partially cooked? And they looked super overcooked and according to my friend who ordered them, she said they were horrible! I wish it was better than it was because I was really expecting great dim sum from this place. Oh well, onward and upward!
google avatar

Adam Y.

Yelp
Besides their dim sum, the Cantonese dishes of Hong Guan are also quite good, especially their Foshan beef chow fun and stewed lamb casserole. Surely a blessing for foodies up in the north. Here are some of their dim sum selections.

Yelp
Finally decided to try this place out since it's just down the street. Beautiful inside! Very friendly & nice. English isn't the strongest so if you want to ask for something special or off menu or a description of something you might have trouble. We managed to communicate with the translation app I basically wanted a stirfry chicken with vegetables and settled on chicken with broccoli and snow peas. I also ordered some dim sum and egg drop soup(which they forgot to give me) my order was to go. Got home and was very impressed with what I got! Not sure how I'd order it again since I didn't get a name of the dish (I tried!) the soup dumplings were good, not great but a good price. Shrimp & scallion dumplings were great! The chicken dish was delicious!

Yelp
We came here to celebrate my nieces birthday on a Sunday evening for dinner. We were all there at 4 pm. The place is classically Chinese decorated and nice ambiance. Was immediately greeted and pointed to our table. The place was not really busy. There were only 2 full tables that was already in service and we were probably the last ones there for the dinner evening. Our waiters were great. We placed quite a few dimsum orders and a few dinner entrees. Everything was quite good and hot. The only thing they didn't get right was the eggplant dish. There were some things that weren't available on the menu. Overall, we had a very good experience here. After seeing the health score, I'm not quite sure if I want to return until they can fix it. Like I said, the food was good for this side of town. I'm really hoping that the new owner can really turn this place around and get it going again and sustain the business for this side of town. Not sure if they did any marketing and maybe people aren't quite sure what to think of this place. I would really like to return and try some more things here. Good luck to this place! When I see the health score change for better scores, I'll definitely return and support this business.

Yelp
Best dim sum in the RockyMountains. Especially ChaSu Boa, Chinken feet, sui mai, fried sugar cane scrimp ball,

Yelp
Hong Guan seems to be owned by the previous restaurant that was here. Emperors Palace. The food here got a little better, but it is still just okay. We came here for dimsum and for dinner. The dimsum is a coin flip, some are good, some not so much. The shumai is good, but other items like their duck, and short ribs weren't. They lacked flavor and were served cold. Some items weren't available and we had to wait for them to be cooked. Dinner items were on the menu but weren't available. But the ones we had were pretty good. Service is what is really lacking. Food takes a while to come to our table. And we were there when the place wasn't full. Servers aren't very attentive, and we always have to flag them down. I am rooting for this restaurant to succeed, and I will still come back to dine. Hopefully the staff will get it together and serve the quality of food we know they can provide.
google avatar

Steven W.

Yelp
Hong Guan sits right near the Pacific Ocean Marketplace and I believe it used to be called The Emperors Palace. The interior is very classic Chinese and remodeled since the previous owner. I had a variety of Dim Sum items but the one that stood head and tails above all was there chicken feet. The chicken feet were cooked to perfection and the sauce was really tasty. Perfectly gelatinous and so beautiful sucking all the meal off those tiny bones. You really shouldn't miss the chicken feet if you order from Hong Guan. The service was also top notch but to be honest the place was not very busy so they could provide lots of attention to our table. I will definitely be going back to try some other dishes but will end with the chicken feet for dessert! :)

Yelp
So excited for this new dim sum spot! My very picky Taiwanese parents have had to drive from Boulder all the way to south Aurora for any good Asian cuisine (except for China Gourmet in north Boulder). We're happy to find a more accessible spot for them closer in Broomfield! Delicious dim sum staples as well as a variety of other entrees! Newly renovated with a new owner (who is a chef himself). There is still the previous Emperor Palace sign, be sure to check our Hong Guan!

Yelp
Stopped by yesterday to grab a snack and wasn't let down. Service was incredibly friendly and even though there was a short wait, they kept me updated throughout. Their Xiaolongbao (aka soup dumplings) were decent, at an affordable price. The egg custards were fresh, rich and flakey. The decor inside was intricate & upscale, and the restaurant didn't feel too dated, though I'm not sure how much remodeling was done after the last chinese place in the same building closed a while back. Will be returning to try more of their menu, soon.
google avatar

Sarah A.

Yelp
This place is so yummy and I love the variety of dim sum on their menu. I will definitely go back for the typical dim sum.
google avatar

Plum C.

Yelp
One of the amazing Chinese food places in my opinion! Love the ambiance of it too! Service is 5 star!

Glenda J.

Yelp
Great service, but ruined by screaming babies and loud talkers in the booth next to us. Chicken feet was the highlight. Cooked to perfect and flavorful. Tripe and ribs were great too. All the dumplings were a disappointment as the dough was pretty thick. The shao long was dry and missing any liquid that is typical of these dumplings. Sesame balls were ok but I was expecting a dark filling. Good to have options for dim sum and may return if I'm back in this area.
google avatar

Lisa D.

Yelp
We have been eating in whatever restaurant occupied this building for years. All were good. The new owners have created something exponentially better. The first sign of an excellent Chinese restaurant is when you are the only non-Chinese guests. We had the soup dumplings (hard to find and excellent), the fried pork and leek dumplings (some of the best dumplings any of us had ever had), Singapore noodles with shrimp and ham, Szechuan twice cooked pork belly with vegetables, and some other dim sum (which they warned us would take a while because it was not dum sum time - they did not say we could not have them, only apologized for the wait). Their dim sum menu is extensive and when they are serving it the atmosphere is like the restaurants I remember from New York's Chinatown, and the food is as good. This is our third time here since they opened and the food and service are unfailingly excellent. And, for reasons we cannot fathom, it is never busy, so there is no wait for a table. (I hope as more people go and write reviews they will get busier, even if it means waiting for a table sometimes.)

Yelp
Great food. Glad to see this restaurant reopened under new owners. Lucky to have dim sum outside of denver.

Gustavo S.

Yelp
Great authentic Chinese food. I being looking for a Chinese restaurant that had Dim Some and I finally found it. Great variety of food and great service

Tom L.

Yelp
Same as before the dim sum is inedible. Just a new name on the restaurant. Don't waste your money

Yelp
Dim sum is average at best, terrible service, and disgusting dinner dishes. Went in for lunch with some friends, ordered 5 dinner dishes, 2 of them contian fish fillets, both had rotten smells and really disgusting, and spicy chicken was over dried, hard as rock inside out, 3 out of 5 dishes we ordered were not eating at all, we complained to waitress regarding to the freshness of the fish, she replied back " you should order something else" and walk away. At the end, we decided to write the issues on the receipt, then owner came and ask, argued with us about the over dried on the spicy chicken, stating that the way he cook, ok fine, then how about the rotten fish? He doesn't want to give us an answer nor a solution to fix the issues. Will never come back and report to health department.

Yelp
Heard this place was new, so thought to give it a try. Good Chinese food in Broomfield seems to be woefully difficult to find, so I am pleased to give this place a "Thumbs Up!" and report that everything was good and the staff were nice! Not being able to find a menu online, I decided to stop by and have a look at their menu on site in the restaurant to order takeout on a Sunday afternoon. The staff have limited English, but seemed friendly and earnest. I ordered the Seafood Pan Friend Noodles, MaPo Tofu, and a dim sum side of Salt & Pepper Fried Tofu. For rice, you get a choice of steamed rice or fried rice (at no extra charge), so I elected to get the fried rice. Everything was tasty! The Salt & Pepper Tofu is available as a main entrée, but I appreciated that I could still order the dim sum size - as a full order is sometimes just too much to eat in one sitting, and it's never as good as a leftover reheat the next day. That being said, their Salt & Pepper Tofu was fantastic! Oh and... as I was about to leave in the parking lot, the man working there hurried out with one additional container. Apparently they had forgotten one item. He was sincerely sorry, and I'm so glad they remembered! I believe in the adage that people are human and make mistakes, but it's how they respond that matters. I hope to be returning to Hong Guan again for delicious takeout!

Anna G.

Yelp
One of our new favorite restaurants! Delicious food and great service! Loved the salt and pepper tofu plus the kung Pao chicken!

Jim And Anne C.

Yelp
We love to go for dim sum. Variety of options and delicious food. Glad it reopened. Can accommodate bigger parties.

Yelp
We stopped here for late lunch and I have mixed feelings about this place. The location looks sad as if they don't really take care of it, on the outside that is. At first when I pulled up we thought it was closed. Once you step inside, it's a very old traditional restaurant style which looks beautiful and grand as you walk in so don't be fooled from the outside! The host/waitress was kind and sat us right away. When we were there around 4, it was pretty slow and we were the only ones there. We ordered the shrimp fried rice, steamed pork ribs, Siu Mai, and soup dumplings. Everything for the food was good. Nothing was super outstanding in particular, we wish they had better sauces to go with the dim sum. Where I feel off is I found a bug in my water, and when I addressed it with the waitress to ask for new water, she didn't seem to mind and brushed it off. And following, my friend who joined me found a bug inside the container of the chili oil that stays in the table. The food was overall good and a good price for the lunch time special I believe we were part of. However, I have to wonder about the cleanliness within the restaurant which ultimately makes me want to turn away and try somewhere else.

Yelp
Love this place!! Best Dim Sum in Denver Metro. We've been here a few times and it is excellent every time.

Alex C.

Yelp
Extremely solid food, with a bunch a unique dishes if you want to venture off the beaten path. Have spent 2 years looking for a solid Chinese place. This one nailed it

M S.

Yelp
Every one of our many visits to this restaurant has been wonderful. Every flavor, every complex dish has been a gourmet delight. The dim sum perfect, the lobster amazing, noodle dishes rich and with varied choices of ingredients. All dishes are prepared to order, fresh and appetizing. Do not miss orange chicken or sizzling pot eggplant. Service is excellent.
google avatar

Anuar B.

Yelp
Pretty terrible dim sum. Service was ok. Could hear the vacuum they were using to clean up. Honestly worst dim sum experience I have ever had.
google avatar

Anthony B.

Yelp
Formerly Emperor's Palace - now under new management. After a brief closure and a little refresh of the decor, the restaurant is open and the dim sum is great - better than ever! Highly recommended...

Casey K.

Yelp
If you're in the area and you HAVE to get your dim sum fix this place is ok. You have to order off a menu and some of the food took a long time. The shui mai were large but didn't have a lot of flavor. The rest was just meh. I'll keep looking for another spot.

Daniel L.

Yelp
Not fresh and lacking flavor. Prices are reasonable but don't expect good quality food here. It's probably the worst dimsum I've had. Go here if you MUST have dimsum, but don't have high expectations.

Lucy W.

Yelp
This place used to be Emperor Palace, it's under new ownership now. We came here to get dim sum and it's delicious, and a lot closer of a drive for my family.

Annie L.

Yelp
Food and service was horrible. I gave two honest reviews and Google took it down. I will never eat here again. After they remodel (place still looks the same) I was excited and optimistic to see what's new and if there was any improvement. My first time back was a disappointment, I had to ask for water several times, felt pressure to order seafood or other dishes when I was there to try dim sum. They over marked my tab, looked confused and never fixed it. By the time I went to pay, a party of two, me and my 11 year old daughter was charged $126.00. My mouth dropped, paid for it and vowed ill never come back... However, my parents came in town and my sister wanted to eat there... I didn't want to say anything, kinda wanted to give them another chance... and this time my family witness what I did... we were over charged again, they only served us whatever dimsum they had left. Never made anything new or fresh. Party of six, we were charged $638.00. A few left over dimsum and two seafood tray, fried rice... ‍‍‍ I will never go back. If you decide to support this restaurant, I hope you have a better experience.

Mike M.

Yelp
Loved the Peking pork and fried rice. The sesame chicken was different from what we are used to but was still good.

Saeed P.

Yelp
Great food; nice and clean interior; timely service. We had Dim Sum: food ingredients were fresh; taste was on point; some items were arguably less heavy on seasoning, but that is a matter of personal taste; Dim Sum slightly less options than I am used to, so we supplemented with some off the menu items; overall good quality and great experience. We will continue to eat here and love to have this option close to home.

Lisa L.

Yelp
Fantastic dim sum- really pleased to have just discovered this restaurant! All the classic dim sum dishes are here- shumai, chive patties, shrimp dumplings, egg tarts, char sui buns- and delicious! My one year old loved everything too! The servers were really friendly and nice. We went on a Sunday around 1 pm and didn't have to wait long for a table. Can't wait to come back soon.

David Y.

Yelp
Very good food. Good service. Clean and nicely decorated. Reminds me of the Chinese restaurants I went with my parents as a kid.

M G.

Yelp
I went to celebrate with my family on a Sunday night, there were only about 4 tables worth of guests , including our table, and we couldn't get all of our orders brought out at the same time. In fact, after being there 90 minutes, we were still short 4 appetizers and a main dish. The owner said they were short staffed that night. The owner reluctantly wrote off the missing orders from our bill. I even asked for a glass of ice and it was never brought out. Maybe they were short staffed but they should have said something when we were ordering about how to excuse them and how our orders would be brought at at random intervals

David D.

Yelp
Had dinner there and several take away dinners. Food has definitely improved since under new ownership. I live in Broomfield and this is the only Chinese restaurant I will go to...it is the only one that actually has Chinese veggies! That is a deal breaker for me. I cannot give it a 5 star only because it is not as good as NYC. I need to try their dim sum next!

Jill S.

Yelp
This is the best dim sum place we have found in the Denver area. Not greasy. Truly authentic, fresh and really yummy. Service is good and they will take time to explain the dishes if you want to know more. Already looking forward to going back!!
