Before college, I brought my daughter here all the time. She was adventurous and tried something new quite often. I had two standbys I ordered most often, twice cooked Pork or Mongolia beef. The ladies working here are so nice and friendly. The old world style restaurant is just too quaint. It makes for the full experience in dining. Plenty of parking, and handicap can enter from north side entrance. I know I needed it. I want to try the Peking Duck. I hear from other patrons it marvelous.

My husband and I were looking for a new Chinese restaurant. We were not disappointed. The food was wonderful. We let our waitress know it was our first time here and she made several wonderful suggestions. Starting with the egg flower and hot and sour soups, very flavorful. The Dimsum was wonderful and full of flavor. We ordered BBq Pork egg foo young and the flavors popped. We also ordered the Mandarin chicken which was both spicy and sweet but not too spicy, just perfect. My husband also ordered a combination plate with Sweet and sour pork, shrimp, and chicken lomein and fried rice. Our over all experience was great and we will be back. They are a hidden gem here in Salem.

Google
Tried this for the first time last week because we have read several reviews and social media posts stating that Hong Kong House has some amazing Chinese cuisine and great service, so naturally we had to give it a shot and compare to a few others we've been to recently. We got the lunch specials for the Egg Foo Young and General Tso's Chicken, along with Pork Shao Mai and Shrimp Dumplings off their Dim Sum menu. Presentation was phenomenal. Everything was piping hot - almost too hot to eat, smelled great and tasted fantastic too. Wait time for the food was about 12 minutes from order to table, which for this level of quality and for the price? You can't beat it. Our total ticket for all this food was about $30 which is crazy low for the quality and quantity of food they gave us. This is the defacto place for Chinese cuisine in town, and we highly recommend this. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Google
This restaurant is a standout. The booths are very comfortable. It has a nice decor it looks very Chinese. The little small egg rolls are nice and crispy and hot on the inside. When the food comes out it's very hot and it stays hot for a long time and it's delicious. They have the best prices for Chinese food of any place in Salem and food wise they are right up there with the best

Google
Delicious food and great service. We both had a combination dinner plus the Bo Bo Platter(see picture). The Bo Bo platter was amazing and it was almost enough to fill the 2 of us by itself. I ended up taking 3/4 of my combo dinner plate home in a to go box. Prices are very good for how massive the portions are. We have had their take out before but this was the first time dining in. 100% will be back.

Google
I'm so happy I found this place!! I love how cozy and clean it is! Outside looks a little rundown, but inside is very nice. THE FOOD OH MY GOD. This is by far the best Chinese restaurant in Salem, everything we got was fresh and tender. I also, love that the hot tea they served was perfect tempture. Also food presentation was a 10/10! will definitely come back with my boyfriend ❤️❤️❤️

Google
We eat here or get take out at least twice a month. It is one of 2 Chinese restaurants we use regularly. The food is great, the staff is friendly and the prices are reasonable. Older building so it has an old school Chinese restaurant vibe to it.

Google
What can I say! Great food, service n prices! Can't beat it.

Yelp
Food is predictable and good. Service is always good too. Nothing exceptional but meets the quick Chinese food need.

Yelp
restaurant side is fine. bar side I'm fairly disappointed I go there because I have a friend that is a regular and that it is close to my location. This was a location I liked to go to for a quiet and enjoyable place. due to staffing and biases not on my account, I was notified by staff via facebook (might I add not friends or anything, sought out for and privately messaged) that I was 86'd. when asking, why there wasn't a reasonable explanation other then I'm not welcomed and they felt uncomfortable. please keep in mind I have kept the upmost respect for this employee and not that it matters have tipped well and have always been respectful and cordial towards them. I will provide the conversation below as proof that this is uncomfortable on my end, unfair and unprofessional on said employee. Messages stated below Employee: You and your wife are both 86ed . Me: Alright. May I ask why? Me: I'm confused as to what we did. Employee: We are just no longer comfortable serving either of you . You are both no longer welcome here thank you have a nice day Me: Alrighty. Well I'm sorry it has come to this. Have a good day. I didn't bother to contest due to the nature of this employee and their hostile attitude towards customers. respectfully withhold their name to not tarnish the establishment and said employees reputation. Unfortunately I have to leave this at a 1 star review due to this kind of outreach from staff. I respectfully ask for an apology not from owners or other staff but from said employee and if that cannot be obtained, my review has and will not be altered or changed unless we have a valid reason which has/had been submitted to us as to why we're no longer welcome at this establishment. It's unfortunate we have to go to this length and I'm very uncomfortable and upset having to write this review. a customer shouldn't feel uncomfortable by staff and upset for misconduct from faculty. *** I would like to add we are both very calm and respectful people, we are not rowdy people and keep to ourselves and have always been respectful. I am deeply saddened to have written this review.

Yelp
Great old school Chinese restaurant down to the lanterns and huge red booths. People working here are always nice. I love the twice cooked pork and the almost long gone custom of a complimentary pot of tea on the table. Not a trendy new Chinese restaurant but a great trip back in time to the much loved vintage Chinese places.

Yelp
From the outside it sure doesn't look that impressive. It's the typical trope of an overly Chinese decorated theme with the pagoda on the roof and lots of embellishments that need a new paint job. But I didn't come here for aesthetics. The inside is very spacious too. Again, with the typical red and gold Chinese dragon décor. I love this sort of place. Makes me feel really comfortable. We were seated at a rather economically sized booth. Me and my birthday girl sister's butts barely fit. Me and my parents traveled from Portland to Salem to take my sister out for her birthday lunch and she highly recommended this place. Per usual, there were scads of choices to behold on the menu. My parents shared some sort of beef vegetable dish. My scallop and vegetable plate was wonderful. Usually places are stingy with their scallops. Not here. I had oodles of scallops. Like more than I knew what to do with. I ended up with a to go container. The whole time we were sitting there I kept eyeing the red door that beckoned Lounge on it. My mind imagined all sorts of scenarios going on behind that red door; all of them seedy. Because that's how my mind works. I couldn't wait until we were all boxed up and ready to go so I could check it out. Imagine my surprise: Nothing but good, clean, wholesome, fun happening in there. There's a pool table, folks were eating. A nice gentleman at the bar and a friendly bartender. My fortune cookie was pretty awesome and probably true too. Bravo, Hong Kong House! 2024 - Review # 10

Yelp
First thing to consider is that this restaurant is in Salem, Oregon. This means that the population expects old-timey Chinese American food. Given this, there are plenty of dishes on the menu that are Cantonese Cantonese foods that you don't usually expect or find. If you order Northern Chinese dishes or dishes that you expect to be spicy, expect them to have a Cantonese accent. What I mean by this is that they will be subtle in flavor compared to what you might expect and perhaps a little sweeter and a little saltier. The main dining room is classic old style Chinese restaurant with booths. I have not been in there, but apparently the bar has a reputation for having a heavy drinking set of regulars.

Kathy H.

Yelp
Had the worst General Tso chicken. Dry, barely any chicken and sauce was not spicy at all. Mostly a soy sauce. My husband had Happy Family and was sick the next day.

Yelp
I just went here for the first time i am literally writing this in the parking lot and i just got yelp for this but let me tell you This. Place. Is. Amazing. Everything about this place i loved let me start off by saying the people here are so sweet they were so nice and caring the whole time and food only took about 15-20 minutes, moving on the food oh. my. gosh. you need to trust me when i say when i have had lots of chinese food in my day huge fan but this is definitely the best ive ever had and i will be going back. And finally i loved the look of this place its like i set foot into a time machine and i loved it i loved the carpet down to all the decoration anywho, i loved this place please try it out.

Yelp
Props to the Hong Kong House for offering dim sum in a smaller city. Most items are not house made but I appreciate the efforts. The gai lan (Chinese broccoli) with oyster sauce was over cooked in both visits. The seafood soup on the other hand was excellent. It was loaded with prawns and bay scallops. The hot and sour soup was excellent too with the right balance of the two flavors. The place is tired and can use some freshening up. Service is friendly.
google avatar

Cherry R.

Yelp
i really like this place, i think it's the most authentic Chinese cuisine in salem for sure. the dim sum is great, only request would be to add more to the dim sum menu, they are often out of things and don't have much variety in general. the ladies are very nice in here, reasonably priced food as well

Yelp
Food is amazing! Best Chinese food we've had in Oregon. Service is good Cute restaurant

Yelp
They were ranked 8th in the nation, and cannot disappoint. The wait time can be a little bit but the food comes out hot and fresh. Orders to go are prompt and worth every penny. It's delicious whether you go family style or try a dish at a time. Some combos come with salad or soup, or you can choose family style with multiple dishes. They can accommodate some food allergies but not all. I believe there is MSG on most sauces but the clear sauce on the chicken and vegetables is usually easiest to adapt. A staple in Salem as a family run business. Relieved they survived the pandemic and for anyone with high risk, take out is always an option too.

Rachael N.

Yelp
Hands down the best Chinese restaurant I've been to in Salem. The General Tsos chicken is tender and has great flavor. I've been ordering here for years and I've never had a bad meal from here. I'm not saying they are always perfect, nobody is, but this place continues to be my favorite Chinese restaurant.

Danny Y.

Yelp
Always a must-visit when visiting Salem, Oregon. The flame kissed wok dishes are unmatched in this city. Golden crown is the only other place that comes close. The old fashion decor and structure is a time capsule. Do not let it deter you from the quality of food and service provided by someone who's been there forever. Lunch deals are great and use this as an opportunity to try something other than orange chicken.
google avatar

M T.

Yelp
Hot & soup! Wonton soup--so much food it almost had no room for broth. I really like the food mostly because like the chicken is soaked in whatever sauce of the dish you order. If you're a 'dipper', pass on this. Oh, and you're gonna need a box for leftovers. Guaranteed!
google avatar

Yelp
Consistently delicious. Very easy to order and pick up. I love the House Lo mein. Pretty much everything there is delicious.

Marie P.

Yelp
This place may look a bit 2nd thought to go into but I have been going there and getting take out there for years! Great folks work there, friendly and kind... food is fantastic (Singapore noodles are one of my favs), and the dim sum at lunch isn't a traditional roll around on a cart, but order it and it comes out fast and hot! Fun noodles are great, prices are very reasonable. Give them a try... I think anyone that likes Chinese food will be very pleasantly surprised. Note: I have never tried out their bar area but would like to see a review.

Yelp
Old looking place with what appears to be many years of wear and tear. Friendly staff. Personally, I would hate to see what the kitchen looks like. Lunch portion was a good size. Ordered General Tso chicken. Flavor was good. Chicken, under the crunchy texture, was fatty - thighs I believe. Fried rice was dry and bbq pork (side order) was dry. Half way through lunch waitress asked if she could fill my water glass. My glass was half full, condensation on the outside made it slippery. She picked up my glass and dumped it in my lap. Apologies and paper towels. No discount on the bill after incident. Understandable because the meal was so cheap. But, not someplace I'll return to as it seems a little too sketchy for my taste. 3 stars for those who want a cheap meal.

Hada M.

Yelp
What?! First they couldn't find my order, after I paid in cash. Then they said It had been picked up... finally they gave me an order but IT WAS NOT WHAT I ORDERED. Check you food before leaving each and every time... it seems petty but not of you get NOTHING YOU ORDERED.
google avatar

Mary D.

Yelp
We had an excellent dinner here - started off with cups of egg flower soup which were delicate and quite tasty, then shared an order of seafood and tofu ceramic pot. This dish was perfectly cooked, delicate and well-flavored without obscuring the flavors of the scallops, calimari, baby squid, and shrimp in the dish. The tofu was cooked just right and had a custard-luke texture. Wonderful! Our server was friendly and just attentive enough. Highly recommended.

Yelp
After going to this place a few times and trying several other Chinese food establishments in Salem, I've concluded this place is among the worst. On my last visit, I ordered vegetable egg foo young and they brought me what appeared to be three veggie burgers smothered in brown gravy. They were hard and crunchy and didn't seem to have any egg in them whatsoever....the absolute worst "egg foo young" I've ever had. It was offensive. Also, each time I've gone, the soup has been lukewarm.

Roy B.

Yelp
I've been a customer there for 30yrs and the food used to be good, but the last two times I ordered food delivered I was very disappointed. The chicken kung pau was not fresh it tasted as if it were left over from lunch, it wasn't hot and the peanuts were springled on top and chewy. The general Tso chicken was not any better. i feel like there must have been a change in management. I called to complain and all they said was thank you. I won't be going back.

Yelp
Hong Kong House used to be salems original Chinese restaurant called China City--coming to south Salem in April of 1957-a major staple at the time! Since then some better competition has cropped up and since been sold and turned into just another hole-in-the-wall. However there's something about this place that carry's with it some great local loyalty! Their pitchers of coors light are still $6 - an absolute steal! Their lounge is really where it all shines!

Brad M.

Yelp
Who ranked them? Americanized Chinese food that is generally okay, but last night it was heavy and poor. For Salem it's good but does not approach New York, San Francisco, or Los Angeles or even Portland We ordered fried tofu with veggies , normally a light dish with vegetables, this dish someone breaded the fried tofu and put a heavy sauce that scrambled the breading into a red mess The same with the egg plant with the same sauce again a mush mess The Chow fun was dry and clumpy and the Mongolian chicken with no spice and The veggies cut so small it was like a grind New Cook? And it's been better before
google avatar

Amanda R.

Yelp
Every time I order from the dim sum menu I am so happy. My favorites from their restaurant include steamed bbq pork buns, Chinese broccoli with oyster sauce, sticky rice, and shin roll (mmm, that gravy!). Be sure to ask for chili oil on the side. We ordered lots of dim sum items today, plus beef chow fun. It was so good! My husband really likes their crab puffs too. They are open for take-out right now, and have a convenient online platform for ordering and paying. Edited to add: expect wait time when ordering from dim sum menu. 45+ minutes isn't unusual, but worth it if you've planned ahead and are expecting it. If eating family style inside the restaurant, they will bring out various dishes as they are ready (not all at once) which I enjoy but does surprise some people.

Yelp
Its a shame that no one has reviewed the Hong Kong House along Commercial Street, as its one of the few (perhaps only) places in Salem that serves Chinese dim sum. There is a lot to be said about this place so lets concentrate on the positives: * Outstanding service: The owner is super friendly as are all of the waitresses * Dim Sum: Its not the best in the world or anything, but impressive for the fact its in Salem and the variety is decent. * Ambiance / Interior: The place looks bigger than it really is. But from the outside it looks like a big castle along a hill, almost too hard to miss. Despite the dark decor, there is plenty of space for big groups and couples. This could be a real power house if it had more business. For all of the positives, there are bound to be a couple of negatives: * Standard Chinese American Fare: This is to be expected in Salem. Its not entirely their fault as there staff here probably makes up 10% of the Chinese population already that the majority of the patrons here aren't Chinese and probably aren't appealed by the more authentic dishes. * Lack of business: There isn't nearly enough people that could be visiting this place. The lunch hours have been near dull as tumbleweed could easily roll in as the staff waits in the corner for some action to happen. Dim Sum has a solid showing, but that only lasts for so long. Is it too inconvenient to visit? Is it too creepy for some folks? Its really needs a spike somewhere or this gem is going to be lost the graveyard of good Chinese restaurants to leave Salem.

Michael W.

Yelp
We have been going here a few times recently and have been trying different dishes. everything has been very good. We even asked for a little modification to a couple of dishes and they came out great. Hands down, they have the best egg rolls I have ever had, fresh, hot and delicious.

Laura Z.

Yelp
Nostalgic. Makes you feel like you are having a bug night out with your grandparents again at the local Chinese place in 1982 but the dishes are solid and something you would be happy eating in 2022. Stopped in on a roadtrip on Thanksgiving because all the local quick places were closed and we were glad we did. Quick service, thoughtful servers, and good food.

Renee B.

Yelp
I ordered two different dishes. The portions are huge. There was a lot of vegetables and meat. The problem was, there was NO flavor in either dish. It was a waste of $38.00. Totally disappointed!

Patrick E S.

Yelp
Attention all you haters, this place is goddamn amazing. Got three dish's and all were great. Sweet and Sour Chicken, Mush Soo Pork and Singapore Noodles. All were huge portions and tasted fucking fabulous. The Chinese beer was great too. I never been to China but the decor inside took me the closest I've ever been, like they even built a big ass temple thing on the roof. When we left with extra food the lady was nice enough to even show us how to bag it all so it didn't spill.

Renee F.

Yelp
One of my favorite Chinese restaurants! Friendly staff and amazing food! The General Tsao chicken is the best anywhere. Great egg rolls, hot and sour soup, Szechuan beef, lo mein. Huge portions. Always hot and fresh. Great lunch specials too.
google avatar

Adam R.

Yelp
Best Chinese food in Salem, and it's not even close. This restaurant has a very interesting history. Plus, they deliver.
google avatar

Rashaad D.

Yelp
Tried ordering from here for the first time. The person who answered was rude. I told them I don't like pork and asked for a different protein in the rice and she said they don't do that....
google avatar

Michael P.

Yelp
First time here. I didn't use the restrooms. The egg flower soup was exactly like anyplace else as was the pork fried rice and egg roll. The portions were more than what I would expect for the price. The General Tso's Chicken had a different sauce than what I am used to with more molasses infused hoisin. I would not order that again and that's typically what I order. Other folks had curry which was great and the vegetable dish which was fresh with a light sauce. My food was hot and fresh, but unfortunately, that was between 10 and 15 minutes after the first entree arrived and they all came at different times. So, while mine was hot, no one else was since mine came last. The staff was nice and attentive, unfortunately, the cook wasn't able to serve the entire table at once even though the place was about 1/4 full. I'd probably come back only if everyone else voted that way.
google avatar

Samuel T.

Yelp
Nice lunch! The twice cooked pork was a very nice and at a good price. It came with pork fried rice and and egg roll for under $6. I have a thing for fried shrimp that is butterflied and wanted to see it they cooked it that way. I ordered the Bo Bo platter and had a good kid of appetizers. Shrimp not butterflied, so on goes the search. Lol Everything was hot and had the right flavors. Good service as well. Had plenty left over for dinner.

Yelp
Hong Kong House. The family has been dining at the Hong Kong House and Lounge since ... 1994. I still cringe when I drive down Commercial in South Salem. Save me from the decades of Hong Kong's impossibly Pink, and now impossibly Orange, building. That said, the food is consistently good, so we look past the building. On Thursday, we shared Hot & Sour Soup (small / $2.50), Beef Broccoli ($9.95), Kung Pao Chicken ($8.95), and Curry Chicken (different and delicious / $8.95). Delicious. Generous amounts and reasonable prices. We have always found the service equally good (Thank You, Mae!). Four Stars.
google avatar

Morgan L.

Yelp
Great service, good food. I came here for lunch with my Mum. This is definitely your traditional Chinese restaurant with the tea and soup and such. Great lunch prices too. I didn't even notice they had a lounge area. Totally different change of scenery!
google avatar

Triple B.

Yelp
Fantastic Chinese Food. I've been very pleased everything I've tried. Fresh ingredients, big portions, and an unbeatable lunch special. Nice decor/atmosphere, and super friendly staff.

Shannon C.

Yelp
Food not that good. Some stuff came out hot other stuff warm at best. My husband and I had met some friends there for dinner and grabbed one drink in the bar while we waiting for the to arrive. We then went to the dining eoom to eat. We ordered our food and as it started arriving we asked for a second round of drinks. We were told we had to wait 30 minutes and eat food before we could have a second alcoholic beverage. To say the least this will be the last time I ever go to this place it is place. Not going to miss is AT ALL! The previous time we were there we sat in the bar ordered drinks with no issues and had food the bartender was great.
google avatar

PD S.

Yelp
$3 ipa drafts in the lounge... that was a shocker as I usually over pay $5-$6 per At other places. That gets a four star from me. Not into Chinese food that much so I cant give much props there though. I am a foodie so there would have to be a wow dish to give any feedback on that.

Rusty L.

Yelp
On a whim I came here. It sounded good since the Chinese place in my home town closed. They were the best. Anyway this place rocked it. I ordered the Orange beef, not on the menu nah nah nah! You gotta know this stuff. Well it was great. Super happy I made the drive. Don't be afraid of the appearance. It looks like a dump but it's not. I would have eaten the orange beef off a flip flop it's that good. Took the flavor boat to flavor town! Glad I came here. Thank you good people who run this place. God bless.
google avatar

Brandon K.

Yelp
The food was very good and timely (we got delivery). We had chicken fried rice, broccoli chicken, and broccoli beef. The only complaint I would have (though some may like this) is there was too much sauce in the two broccoli dishes. That's just a preference. Spring rolls were excellent. Also, they aren't that expensive for the amount of food you get in delivery.
google avatar

Carol H.

Yelp
This was our only option for dim sum in Salem that was near our hotel. The restaurant looks outdated inside and out. The staff was pleasant but the food came out slowly. The stir-fried items were better than the dim sum. We appreciated that the food was not too greasy. Not sure if we would venture this way again.
google avatar

Jerad G.

Yelp
This place is amazing. Hands down the best Chinese food in Salem. I recommend the Kung pao chicken or beef. The sweet and sour chicken is amazing as well. The food is delicious and it's affordable as well. If you're looking for cheap delicious Chinese in Salem then Hong Kong House is for you.
google avatar

Rachel C.

Yelp
Delicious food and a great atmosphere! I love this place! They give you huge portions at a low price. We always bring home leftovers!
google avatar

Lissa B.

Yelp
Huge portions. Everything made from scratch. Their orange chicken is the best I've ever had. The hot and sour soup is to die for. The fiance and I order once a month and it feeds us for a few days. So worth it for the price as well!!!
google avatar

Yelp
This was my second time at Hong Kong House, the first was before I lived in Salem and I had forgotten how it was. Ordered General Tso's Chicken, had good flavor and was reasonably priced for the size. The chicken pieces did tend to clump together after being deep fried - would have been better to be broken up before stir frying. Still, it was a good meal, but I'll try another menu item next time.
google avatar

Star T.

Yelp
This is easily one of the place to get legit Chinese food in Salem. The food is priced very reasonably (even though I usually end up spending too much anyway) and the service has always been very attentive whenever I've dined in. Even recently, my father was visiting from out of down and I took him here. His standard for Chinese is relatively high; he lived/worked in LA for most his life and had plenty of time to find the better options there. He was very impressed with the food. Even more impressive was the way the wait staff politely tolerated his awful small talk and awkward jokes. We ended up going here almost every day he was here, per his request. I've been going here on and off for years, and will continue to do so assuming they keep up the great work!

Yelp
I've been to every single Chinese restaurant in Salem, and this one is undoubtedly the best, hands down. The place may look a little run down inside and outside, but please look past that, because the food is delicious. Absolutely the BEST hot and sour soup I've ever had, and prices that are shockingly reasonable (especially for lunch). All of the sauces they use taste delicious and right on point. I had the General Tso's chicken, Szechuan chicken and Mongolian beef this time. All of them were astoundingly good. I should have tried this place first in my search for a good Chinese restaurant in Salem. We went to countless numbers of other Chinese places in Salem and always ended up being disappointed (we are from Portland and used to Wu's Open Kitchen). Finally I stumbled upon this one, and I'm so glad I did! Ignore all the other negative reviews from people who clearly have no taste. My new favorite place!
